  1. Well, we take some time now to go to God's Word.

  2. And so I invite you to open up to the Gospel

  3. according to John, John chapter 2. We are starting

    John 2 chapter mention

  4. a new sermon series today on the miracles of

  5. Jesus. And as we're going to see, as we look

  6. at this, we're going to see a great purpose behind

  7. these miracles that Jesus performs. They are

  8. really intended, yes, they're intended to help

  9. people who need healing. And yes, Jesus performed

  10. these incredible signs to help drive out evil

  11. spirits. And yes, as we see in our text, this

  12. changing of the water to wine. But behind, underneath

  13. all of the miracles that Jesus does, is the purpose

  14. that people would see and recognize and know

  15. that Jesus is the Christ. I think it's very telling

  16. that within the gospel, according to John, the

  17. word that is commonly used here is not the word

  18. miracle, but it's sign. Jesus' signs are significant.

  19. They were significant then, and they're significant

  20. now. And so let's give attention to this first

  21. one here, John chapter two, verses one through

  22. 12. On the third day, there was a wedding at

  23. Cana in Galilee and the mother of Jesus was there.

  24. Jesus also was invited to the wedding with his

  25. disciples. When the wine ran out, the mother

  26. of Jesus said to him, they have no wine. And

  27. Jesus said to her, woman, what does this have

  28. to do with me? My hour has not yet come. His

  29. mother said to the servants, do whatever he tells

  30. you. Now, there were six stone water jars there

  31. for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding

  32. 20 or 30 gallons. Jesus said to the servants,

  33. fill the jars with water. And they filled them

  34. up to the brim. And he said to them, now draw

  35. some out and take it to the master of the feast.

  36. So they took it. When the master of the feast

  37. tasted the water now become wine and did not

  38. know where it came from, though the servants

  39. who had drawn the water knew, the master of the

  40. feast called the bridegroom and said to him,

  41. everyone serves the good wine first. And when

  42. people have drunk freely, then the poor wine.

  43. but you have kept the good wine until now. This,

  44. the first of his signs Jesus did at Cana in Galilee,

  45. and manifested his glory, and his disciples believed

  46. in him. After this, he went down to Capernaum

  47. with his mother and his brothers and his disciples,

  48. and they stayed there for a few days. The grass

  49. withers and the flower fades, but God's word

  50. stands forever. Let's pray. Father, we thank

  51. you for your word. We thank you for this perfect,

  52. inerrant, and infallible, and life -giving word,

  53. and we ask that as we study this today, Lord,

  54. that you would be at work, that you would open

  55. up our hearts and our minds, Lord, to hear from

  56. you, to know that Jesus is the Christ, and to

  57. live for him always. These things we pray in

  58. his name. Amen. In the 1910s, liberalism was

  59. on the rise in this country. Liberalism within

  60. churches. And so to combat that, some ministers

  61. of the gospel got together in the Northern Presbyterian

  62. Church and they came up with what was called

  63. the essential and necessary doctrines. They needed

  64. a safeguard against unbelief. For Christians,

  65. we're saying, I don't have to affirm what the

  66. Bible says on this. I don't have to affirm what

  67. the Bible says on that. And so they said, no,

  68. we need some way to safeguard from that. And

  69. so they came up with these essential and necessary

  70. doctrines. And I'll tell you what those are in

  71. just a second. But 14 years later, in 1924, a

  72. group of supposed ministers of the gospel, in

  73. great number, 1 ,200 men said no to those things.

  74. They said, no, we don't need to affirm the inspiration

  75. and inerrancy of Scripture. No, we don't need

  76. to affirm the virgin birth. No, we don't need

  77. to affirm substitutionary atonement. No, we don't

  78. need to affirm the historical resurrection of

  79. Jesus, and those people said, we do not need

  80. to affirm the miracles of Jesus. Can you imagine

  81. denying those things and calling yourself a Christian?

  82. I cannot. And yet, just as it happened in 1924,

  83. So it happens in our day that people deny these

  84. things, but this is clearly what the scriptures

  85. teach. And so we affirm them. We say that Jesus

  86. really performed the miracles that we're going

  87. to look out for the next ten or so Sundays, Lord

  88. willing. The miracles of Jesus showcased for

  89. us the power of God, the mercy of God. The signs

  90. of Jesus affirm to us who Jesus is as the Son

  91. of God and the Savior of sinners. The miracles

  92. of Jesus authenticate who he is. So this is what

  93. we're looking at. And you can see in John chapter

  94. two, this is the first of Jesus's signs. Looking

  95. into the context of this, Jesus in the prior

  96. chapter had just chosen some of his disciples

  97. there in chapter one. Now what's the first thing

  98. you do with your disciples? Apparently you take

  99. them to a wedding. Call it team building or something.

  100. And so they go to this wedding. It's in the city

  101. of Cana in Galilee. And they don't crash the

  102. wedding, don't worry. It clearly says Jesus was

  103. invited to this along with his mother. But let

  104. me tell you, I don't think that you've ever been

  105. to a wedding like this one. Now, that doesn't

  106. mean that there was anything extremely special

  107. about this wedding, you know, except for the

  108. wine to water thing. But what I mean by that

  109. is that weddings in Jesus' day in this place,

  110. these celebrations would oftentimes go for as

  111. long as a week. Can you imagine celebrating?

  112. a wedding for a week, not your wedding, but celebrating

  113. the weddings of other people for a week, and

  114. you thought it took a long time for the bridal

  115. party to take pictures. Here, we have this ongoing

  116. celebration, but the ongoing celebration takes

  117. a turn for the worse. Look in verse three. The

  118. wine runs out. the wine runs out. Friends, in

  119. Jesus' day at this time and this place, for the

  120. wine to run out, this was a big deal. This is

  121. a no -no. This would have brought extreme embarrassment

  122. upon the married couple, the couple to be married.

  123. This would have brought shame upon them. There

  124. is even some evidence that there could have been

  125. legal ramifications for not providing wine to

  126. last for the duration of the celebration. This

  127. is bad for this couple and especially bad for

  128. the groom. You see, hospitality was such a big

  129. deal. Hospitality in our day, I think it goes

  130. by the wayside. It's something we need to reclaim.

  131. But in Jesus' day, this was a big deal. Now you

  132. might say, well, a celebration that went on for

  133. a week with a lot of wine, you can see how that

  134. could be a problem. But in Jesus' day, wine was

  135. often diluted because you can't imagine what

  136. celebration for a week would do to a person drinking.

  137. So it was diluted. But the purpose here then

  138. of this scripture is not to promote drinking.

  139. That's not the main point. We know that drunkenness

  140. is sinful. Scripture speaks to that in many places.

  141. But also see this, Scripture does not outlaw

  142. alcohol. It does not. It does not hear, right?

  143. Wine actually within the Bible typically symbolizes

  144. joy. And a wedding is a joyous occasion. But

  145. there's this problem. Where's the wine? And so

  146. Mary says this to Jesus. They're out of wine.

  147. There's urgency to this and so look in verse

  148. 4 for Jesus's response Jesus said her woman.

  149. What does this have to do with me now when we

  150. read that I don't know about you, but I'm wondering

  151. something is Jesus being kind here is he being

  152. polite Absolutely, we need to read this not just

  153. the way it comes through in the English We should

  154. understand that when Jesus says this woman. This

  155. is a sign of respect This is a sign of being

  156. polite. This is a common expression. Matter of

  157. fact, do you remember Jesus on the cross when

  158. Jesus said, woman, behold thy son? We might say

  159. this is kind of like using the term ma 'am here.

  160. Or if you're using the NIV, I think it says dear

  161. woman to this effect. And so Jesus addresses

  162. his mother and then he says, what does this have

  163. to do with me? Now, again, this is Jesus's first

  164. sign. So it's not like Jesus grew up performing

  165. signs in the living room or something. Hey, mom,

  166. check this out. By no means. And so have you

  167. ever thought, what did Mary expect her son to

  168. do here? Did she expect a sign? I don't know.

  169. But I do think that Mary, we can say this, Mary

  170. has not forgotten who her son is. You remember

  171. the birth. You remember the announcement of the

  172. angels, right? You remember perhaps being in

  173. the temple with Simeon, right? Mary, I believe,

  174. is recalling who her son is here. Luke chapter

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  175. 2 says she treasured these things in her heart.

  176. And so she has not forgotten who Jesus is even

  177. if he has yet to show his glory. But the next

  178. part of what Jesus says I think is often misunderstood.

  179. My hour has not yet come. Here is the incorrect

  180. interpretation of that. That we think Jesus is

  181. saying Mom, I'm not doing anything about this.

  182. My time is not now to perform signs. That's not

  183. the correct view. The correct view is Jesus,

  184. when he says that, he's not talking about the

  185. miracles. He's talking about his death. He's

  186. saying, it is not my hour to suffer. It is not

  187. my hour to give up my blood. for my blood to

  188. be shed on the cross. It is not time for that

  189. yet. And I think I can prove this to you by looking

  190. at some other scripture in John. If you would

  191. like to flip over to John 12, 23. Considering

  192. the words the hour. John 12 23 and Jesus answered

  193. them the hour has come for the Son of Man to

  194. be glorified and then jumped down to verse 27

  195. now is my soul troubled and what shall I say

  196. father save me from this hour but for this purpose

  197. I have come to this hour jumped down to chapter

  198. 13 verse 1 now before the feast of the Passover

  199. When Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart

  200. out of this world to the Father, having loved

  201. his own who were in the world, he loved them

  202. to the end. Again, the hour jumped to 17, chapter

  203. 17, verse one. When Jesus had spoken these words,

  204. he lifted up his eyes to heaven and said, Father,

  205. the hour has come. Glorify your son. that the

  206. sun may glorify you. Friends, the hour is his

  207. crucifixion, and the wine is his blood. We know

  208. this from John chapter 6. Let me read this, John

    John 6 chapter mention

  209. 6, 53 through 54. So Jesus said to them, truly,

  210. truly, I say to you, Unless you eat the flesh

  211. of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have

  212. no life in you. Whoever feeds on my flesh and

  213. drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will

  214. raise him up on the last day. Jesus is talking

  215. about his passion. Jesus is talking about giving

  216. himself up on the cross. One commentator says

  217. here, Jesus is saying in John 2 that though his

  218. hour was not yet at hand during the wedding at

  219. Cana in Galilee, it would eventually be at hand.

  220. And when it is at hand, it will become appropriate

  221. to ask him to provide wine for the feast, the

  222. feast of the kingdom of God. And so as we look

  223. at this wedding, as we look at the wine running

  224. out, friends, look to the Lord's Supper and what

  225. that pictures. When Jesus' blood was poured out

  226. for the forgiveness of sins, Jesus again is saying,

  227. it's not my time to shed my blood, but it is

  228. my time to begin these signs. And so we should

  229. be reminded here of the ultimate purpose for

  230. this miracle. Yes, Jesus is helping the groom

  231. avoid embarrassment. Yes, Jesus will perform

  232. miracles to help the suffering. Yes, Jesus is

  233. going to drive out demons. But ultimately, the

  234. miracles are designed to show that Jesus is the

  235. Savior, that Jesus is the Redeemer, that Jesus

  236. is the promised and powerful Messiah. Friends,

  237. particularly, let me speak to children today.

  238. Do you believe this to be true? Do you believe

  239. that Jesus died for your sins? Do you believe

  240. that Jesus performed these signs? You must see

  241. the evidence here. It is overwhelming. Jesus

  242. really did come. live and die for you and Jesus

  243. is really coming again and so all of you do not

  244. deny the miracles of Jesus do not deny the resurrection

  245. don't be the liberals of 1924 or 2025 it still

  246. works for if we believe that he died for our

  247. sins do we not also believe in the signs that

  248. he performed John 14 believe in me that I am

  249. in the father and the father is in me or else

  250. believe on account of the signs themselves the

  251. signs had a purpose for Jesus's mother the signs

  252. had a purpose for the disciples and this purpose

  253. is still hold true today and so you see what

  254. Mary does here she believes Jesus And she gives

  255. the best instruction of all time in verse five.

  256. This is the best thing you could say. Do whatever

  257. Jesus tells you to do. Listen to him. And so

  258. you see what these servants do. Jesus directs

  259. them in verse six to these six stone water jars

  260. there for the Jewish rights of purification.

  261. They hold 20 or 30 gallons here. When it says

  262. for purification, we must remember that the Jewish

  263. people, they are a people of cleanliness. This

  264. purification, they were at the very least washing

  265. their hands and their feet before they came into

  266. such a celebration. Cleanliness is a good thing,

  267. but what they really needed, and what we also

  268. really need, is to be cleansed from within, right?

  269. when we believe in Christ the Holy Spirit and

  270. dwells in our hearts and pardons us of our sins

  271. and and cleans us from sin and we get the righteousness

  272. of Jesus So you see there is there is great symbolism

  273. here within this Jesus is not performing a haphazard

  274. Miracle Jesus is not performing magic tricks

  275. matter of fact this sign that Jesus does is actually

  276. done very quietly, isn't it? Jesus doesn't have

  277. special words over the sign. He doesn't wave

  278. his hands about. Matter of fact, the credit here

  279. actually goes to the groom, not the one who performed

  280. the sign. And so Jesus gives this direction.

  281. Fill the jars and draw some of it out and give

  282. it to the master, the master of the feast, some

  283. sort. of official overseeing this celebration.

  284. And so this official, this master, he tastes

  285. this wine. And what does he say? He says, hey,

  286. this is good. This is good. Now, if you know

  287. anything about wine, you know this shouldn't

  288. be so because the best wine is aged wine, right?

  289. But Jesus is the son of God. Jesus was active

  290. in the creation of the heavens and the earth,

  291. along with the Father and the Spirit. And so

  292. turning water to wine shouldn't surprise us.

  293. It's miraculous because we can't do it, but nothing

  294. is impossible with God. But still, perhaps you're

  295. like me and you wonder, all right, these servants,

  296. they do what Jesus says, but what are they thinking?

  297. What are they thinking as they draw out some

  298. of this water changed to wine? Are they thinking,

  299. Jesus, this man must be out of his mind here.

  300. I'm about to serve water to the master. I cannot

  301. wait to speak to these servants. I believe they

  302. must be with Jesus. I would love to ask them,

  303. what were you thinking in this moment? but you

  304. see their obedience they just do it and the master

  305. gives praise you have kept the good wine till

  306. now if only he knew of the crisis that was averted

  307. if he only knew how jesus changed the water to

  308. wine but you see jesus is so humble right jesus

  309. doesn't point at the big water jars and say look

  310. what i did that's probably what i would do That's

  311. not what Jesus does. He doesn't have to. Jesus

  312. quietly goes about his work, and he saves the

  313. bridegroom from shame. At the same time, he reminds

  314. his mother that he has work to do, and the servants

  315. observe all of this. But I think the greatest

  316. benefit of this sign is for the disciples, because

  317. look in verse 11. And his disciples believed

  318. in him. This is for their benefit. This is for

  319. their benefit. And it is for our benefit. It

  320. is for you to see and to know that Jesus is that

  321. promised and powerful Messiah. But let's say

  322. that you have believed in Jesus for a long time.

  323. Let's say that you've grown up in this church.

  324. You have followed Jesus closely for decades even.

  325. You might say, what's the application for me?

  326. What do I do with this passage? Is Jesus simply

  327. keeping the party alive? How can I apply this?

  328. Perhaps four points of application. Remember

  329. the setting of this is a wedding. And you see

  330. those servants obey Jesus. And so as Christians,

  331. are we obedient to the scriptures? Are we obedient

  332. to Christ? Are we living after the instruction

  333. of God's perfect word? You've perhaps been in

  334. a wedding, maybe you've even been wed. You ever

  335. had a wedding planner? You gotta do what the

  336. wedding planner says. Jesus is so much greater

  337. than any wedding planner. But we recognize as

  338. Christians that we must live obediently to the

  339. Scriptures, which tells us something else. We

  340. must know the Scriptures. We cannot be obedient

  341. to the Scriptures if we are not in them. And

  342. so friends, get alone with God. Get alone with

  343. God in His Word. Get alone each day for time

  344. in the Word, even if it's just a verse. Get alone

  345. with God for time of... Prayer. Praying over

  346. the Scriptures. Be in Sunday school. Come to

  347. the other ministries of this church or other

  348. good churches. Be studying the Word so you can

  349. be obedient to the Word. Secondly, this also

  350. shows the importance of the changed heart. The

  351. Jewish leaders and the people, they were very

  352. good at kind of the externals of religion. But

  353. inside, they needed to be changed. It's only

  354. with changed hearts that we can rightly worship

  355. God. And so pray for God, for the Spirit to sanctify

  356. you to be more and more like Jesus, that you

  357. may rightly worship him. Thirdly, the emotion

  358. of a wedding. There is great joy at weddings.

  359. There should be God uniting man to woman. There

  360. is great joy there. Imagine having Jesus on your

  361. guest list. Jesus here doesn't say, you know

  362. what, I got better things to do than go to this

  363. wedding. I've got people to heal. I've got classes

  364. to teach. Jesus doesn't do that. He goes to the

  365. wedding. We as Christians should be growing in

  366. joy. That's in that great list of the fruit of

  367. the Spirit. Friends today, if you are lacking

  368. in joy, go to a wedding. Now make sure you're

  369. invited, but go to a wedding and celebrate the

  370. good gifts of God. Celebrate the good things

  371. in your life. and celebrate the things in the

  372. lives of other people. If you find that you're

  373. lacking in joy, pray and celebrate the good things.

  374. Fourthly, hope. The analogy of the wedding used

  375. throughout scripture, that Jesus is the bridegroom

  376. who laid down his life for his bride. Jesus is

  377. committed to the church. All this is pictured,

  378. as I said, within the Lord's Supper. It's also

  379. pictured in our baptism, right? And it's also

  380. pictured in something that we have to hope for,

  381. the marriage supper of the Lamb. Isaiah 25 pictures

  382. this, predicts this, on this mountain the Lord

  383. of Hosts will make for all people a feast of

  384. rich food, a feast of well -aged wine. of rich

  385. food, full of marrow, of aged wine, well refined.

  386. This sign should have us looking to eternity.

  387. Consider Revelation 19, 9. Blessed is the one

  388. who is invited to the marriage supper of the

  389. lamb. Will you be there? Will you be at the marriage

  390. supper of the lamb with Christ? The wedding invitations

  391. have gone out. They have. They go out through

  392. the proclamation of the word. And so you have

  393. heard the word. Your seat at the marriage supper

  394. of the Lamb is only reserved through faith in

  395. Jesus Christ. And so if you are lacking in that,

  396. if you don't have assurance of salvation today,

  397. if you're not sure what to make of Jesus, pray

  398. today. Pray now. And ask God to grant you the

  399. gift of faith that you will be. there because

  400. Jesus is committed to the church. His hour came.

  401. He answered the call. Jesus laid down his life

  402. for you to wash you clean of sin. Jesus is the

  403. groom and he loves you very, very much. Let's

  404. pray.
