  1. Let's take our Bibles and open up to the Gospel

  2. according to Mark. Mark chapter 9 looking at

    Mark 9 chapter mention

  3. verses 14 through 29 as we continue our sermon

  4. series through some of the miracles of Jesus.

  5. We're not covering all of them. That would take

  6. a very long time. But we're seeing several of

  7. these and this one that we look at today This

  8. is a remedy for the weak heart. And so if your

  9. heart is weak, if there are things that are weighing

  10. you down today, I pray that you would be strengthened

  11. by God's Word. And so would you give an ear to

  12. it now? Mark chapter 9, verses 14 through 29.

    Mark 9:14–29

  13. And when they came to the disciples, they saw

  14. a great crowd around them. scribes arguing with

  15. them and immediately all the crowd when they

  16. saw him were greatly amazed and ran up to him

  17. and greeted him and he asked them what are you

  18. arguing about with them and someone from the

  19. crowd answered him teacher I brought my son to

  20. you for he has a spirit that makes him mute and

  21. whenever it seizes him it throws him down And

  22. he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid.

  23. So I asked your disciples to cast it out. And

  24. they were not able. And he answered them, oh,

  25. faithless generation, how long am I to be with

  26. you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him

  27. to me. And they brought the boy to him. And when

  28. the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed

  29. the boy and he fell on the ground and rolled

  30. about, foaming at the mouth. And Jesus asked

  31. his father, how long has this been happening

  32. to him? And he said, from childhood. And it is

  33. often cast him into fire and into water to destroy

  34. him. But if you can do anything, have compassion

  35. on us and help us. And Jesus said to him, if

  36. you can, all things are possible for one who

  37. believes. Immediately, the father of the child

  38. cried out and said, I believe, help my unbelief.

  39. And when Jesus saw that, a crowd came running

  40. together. He rebuked the unclean spirit saying

  41. to it, you mute and deaf spirit, I command you,

  42. come out of him and never enter him again. And

  43. after crying out and convulsing him terribly,

  44. it came out and the boy was like a corpse. So

  45. that most of them said, he is dead. But Jesus

  46. took him by the hand and lifted him up and he

  47. arose And when he had entered the house his disciples

  48. asked him privately Why could we not cast it

  49. out? And he said to them this kind cannot be

  50. driven out by anything but prayer This is God's

  51. holy word Let's pray Father we we bless you and

  52. we thank you for your infallible word. And we

  53. ask today that as we look at this text that you

  54. would strengthen our faith just like you strengthen

  55. the faith of this man within this text. This

  56. we ask in Christ's name. Amen. I know that I've

  57. shared this illustration before, but maybe you'll

  58. hear it like it's the first time. You might remember

  59. the great preacher Charles Haddon Spurgeon. Spurgeon

  60. was the pastor of a very large church in London

  61. called the Metropolitan Tabernacle. It was very

  62. impressive, just lots and lots and lots of people

  63. worshiped there Sunday after Sunday after Sunday

  64. and showing up throughout the week for Bible

  65. studies and for prayer and things. And people

  66. in London would often ask Spurgeon, How do you

  67. keep this church going? How is the ministry here

  68. so successful? And on more than one occasion,

  69. he said, you want to know? Come with me. And

  70. he would take those visitors down into the very

  71. basement of the church. And he would say, I owe

  72. the success of this church to our heating apparatus.

  73. You want to see? And they would say, what are

  74. you talking about? I don't need to see that.

  75. But in the basement, there was a room. And it

  76. wasn't so much a physical heating apparatus as

  77. it was a place that was filled with people praying.

  78. And he would say, this is the engine room of

  79. the church, the prayer meeting. And that's what

  80. we see from this text. We see how important,

  81. how crucial, how powerful prayer is and how Christians

  82. have to be men and women, boys and girls of prayer.

  83. But we also see the necessity of faith in here.

  84. So that's what we're looking at today, faith

  85. and prayer. But we also must note the context

  86. of this episode. If you have your Bible still

  87. open, which I hope that you do, look at just

  88. what happens prior to this episode in Mark chapter

  89. nine. This is the transfiguration. It's very

  90. important to note that. It's also to note who

  91. is actually involved in this episode. Verse 14

  92. says, and when they came to the disciples, who

  93. is they within this text? It's Jesus and it's

  94. his inner circle of disciples. Peter, James,

  95. and John come with Jesus to see this great crowd.

  96. What were those three doing with Jesus? Well,

  97. we know from that context that those three were

  98. on the mountain with Jesus They have seen Jesus

  99. there with him and they come down from that mountain

  100. and they see this great crowd and these disciples

  101. and there is some sort of commotion that is happening

  102. and It's a commotion of unbelief This should

  103. remind us of the time that Moses was on Sinai

  104. You remember when Moses spends a long time on

  105. Mount Sinai, such that the Israelites down below

  106. are like, we don't know what happened to him,

  107. let's make a god. And they make an idol, the

  108. golden calf. And Moses is on the mountain, and

  109. he hears the commotion. And this grieves him

  110. to the core, for he sees the unbelief of the

  111. people. This is a situation that Jesus and the

  112. disciples see. They come down from this mountain.

  113. and they see what's before them, and they see

  114. the scribes arguing with them. And in the midst

  115. of all of this, somebody comes up to Jesus and

  116. says, teacher, I brought my son to you, for he

  117. has a spirit that makes him mute. And so we have

  118. this man who is desperate for help for his son.

  119. His son has been sick since he was very young

  120. as a boy. And he's got these seizures, right?

  121. And more than that, he's got this demon possession

  122. that's happening that has many times tried to

  123. cast the boy into the fire or into the water

  124. seeking to destroy him. And so this man is truly

  125. desperate here, but there is a big crowd around

  126. him. And Jesus offers this rebuke, doesn't he?

  127. Look in verse 19. Oh, faithless generation, how

  128. long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear

  129. with you? Why is Jesus offering this kind of

  130. rebuke? What's going on? Well, some have had

  131. difficulties trying to understand who is Jesus

  132. rebuking here? Is he rebuking everybody who's

  133. listening, the whole crowd? Well, I don't think

  134. that that's the case, because the whole purpose

  135. of this has been that there is this boy who's

  136. got this demonic spirit and nobody has been able

  137. to do anything about it. So we wouldn't expect

  138. the crowd to do anything about this. Perhaps

  139. it's the scribes, those religious leaders. They

  140. can't do anything about this either. They may

  141. try, but I doubt it. What I really think is going

  142. on here is that Jesus is rebuking his disciples.

  143. He is lumping them in with the, oh, faithless

  144. generation. as if to say, you must trust me.

  145. You must depend upon me in order to do anything.

  146. Now, we might say to Jesus here, this this sounds

  147. a little harsh. Lighten up, Jesus. Why? Why are

  148. you getting onto their case? But you must see,

  149. friends, that the entire ministry of the disciples

  150. will be contingent upon faith. They won't be

  151. able to do a single thing for Jesus. without

  152. faith in Him. Without faith, they, we are unable

  153. to accomplish anything. And what is Jesus doing

  154. but training them, preparing them for the opposition

  155. that they will face? The context shows us this.

  156. What immediately follows this episode? Look at

  157. verse 30 and on. They went on from there and

  158. passed through Galilee. he did not want anyone

  159. to know for he was teaching his disciples saying

  160. to them the son of man is going to be delivered

  161. into the hands of men and they will kill him.

  162. That's what follows. Also look at what precedes

  163. this episode in chapter 8 verse 31. and began

  164. to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer

  165. many things and be rejected by the elders and

  166. the chief priests and the scribes and be killed.

  167. Jesus knows one day he's going to the Father.

  168. He's preparing them for this. But if they don't

  169. have faith to trust in God, they will not have

  170. a ministry and it will not continue. And so Jesus

  171. is giving them on the field training right now.

  172. That they will be able to do teaching, they will

  173. be able to do healing, they will be able and

  174. have been able to cast out demons. But friends,

  175. we cannot do anything for God without trusting

  176. in him. We cannot. If you will, just listen to

  177. this from Matthew chapter seven. Matthew seven,

  178. 21 through 23. And these are words we need to

  179. pay attention to. Matthew 721, not everyone who

  180. says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom

  181. of heaven, but the one who does the will of my

  182. Father who is in heaven. On that day, many will

  183. say to me, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in

  184. your name and cast out demons in your name and

  185. do many mighty works in your name? And then I

  186. will declare to them, I never knew you. Depart

  187. from me, you workers of lawlessness. Friends,

  188. faithlessness and ministry don't mesh. Faithlessness

  189. and ministry, they don't work. True disciples

  190. of Jesus trust Jesus and true disciples of Jesus

  191. feed their faith as the Holy Spirit sanctifies.

  192. So you might say, well, how is that? How can

  193. we grow in our faith? I don't have an exotic

  194. answer here. It's really quite simple. H .B.

  195. Charles Jr. says, it's scripture intake. Scripture

  196. intake. It's kind of like exercise. Pretty much,

  197. I think everybody in here would say, yeah, I

  198. want to be in good shape from our oldest to our

  199. youngest and in between, right? We want to take

  200. care of our bodies, right? But if you never go

  201. for a walk. If you don't eat well, you're not

  202. going to see that progress, right? We really

  203. have to take in the good and cast off the bad,

  204. right? And that's the way it is with our faith.

  205. If you will, just listen to 1 Peter chapter two,

  206. verse one. So put away all malice and all deceit

  207. and hypocrisy and envy and all slander. So put

  208. those things away like newborn infants long for

  209. the pure spiritual milk that by it you may grow

  210. up into salvation if indeed you have tasted that

  211. the Lord is good. So we have to put off those

  212. things which do not help our faith, which hinder

  213. our faith and put on good things like scripture.

  214. And so friend, have you tasted that the Lord

  215. is good? Have you? And if so, you might say,

  216. well, how do I have more? Again, it's the very

  217. word of God. This is the time of year when people

  218. make resolutions. Why not make a resolution that

  219. you can actually keep by the power of the Holy

  220. Spirit helping you, that you can give yourself

  221. to the word of God? Now, maybe you're out of

  222. the habit, kind of like exercise. You're out

  223. of the habit. That doesn't mean that you should

  224. go run a marathon right away. It doesn't mean

  225. that you go to the gym and you You know, you

  226. get on the bench and you try and bench press

  227. whatever the previous person had before you.

  228. Baby steps. And so if you're out of the practice

  229. of reading scripture or listening to it, just

  230. take a verse a day, at least a verse a day, just

  231. to listen, to read it, to meditate upon it, hide

  232. it in your heart. Recently, I've begun a practice

  233. of taking one scripture, usually the scripture

  234. for Sunday. and I print it off on a note card,

  235. just very small, and I put it in my pocket, or

  236. I put it in my bag, such that everywhere I go,

  237. I have immediate access, can pull that card out

  238. and look at it and reflect upon it. Do something

  239. like that, small steps, to begin absorbing more

  240. and more of the Bible. But we also recognize

  241. that we need the ministry of the word. I'm preaching

  242. to the choir here, because you are here, but

  243. we need the preaching of the word. But we also

  244. need time of strengthening from other believers.

  245. And so make this the year in which you say, yeah,

  246. I'm planning to be there for Sunday school. I'm

  247. planning to be there for Wednesday nights. Join

  248. in with our wick or our men of the covenant or

  249. children taking part in those programs that we

  250. have. Times together of learning scripture. But

  251. not only that, we need times together of prayer.

  252. Right? We all need to be people of prayer and

  253. that's really what Jesus is teaching here So

  254. we've seen Jesus offer that rebuke, right? But

  255. then what does Jesus do? He asked for the boy

  256. And so as they bring the boy to him who's got

  257. this Demonic spirit within him as soon as that

  258. spirit is into the presence of Jesus near him

  259. It sends the boy into convulsions Translations

  260. will say that this is epileptic seizures, and

  261. while that's true, it all happens because of

  262. demon possession. And so the demon possesses

  263. and makes the boy mute and makes him deaf, and

  264. yet those things do not hinder Jesus from speaking

  265. right to that spirit and saying, get out of him.

  266. Look in verse 22. You can see how desperate the

  267. father is. It's often cast him into fire and

  268. into water to destroy him. But if you can do

  269. anything, have compassion on us and help us.

  270. Here, we might look at that and say, well, probably

  271. shouldn't have said it like that, if you can

  272. do anything. But before we begin to criticize

  273. this father, Let's think to ourselves, do we

  274. struggle with unbelief? Do you ever struggle

  275. with unbelief? I would say that you do, because

  276. I know at times that I do. Calvin said of this

  277. passage, he declares that he believes and yet

  278. acknowledges himself to have unbelief. These

  279. two statements may appear to contradict each

  280. other, but there is none of us that does not

  281. experience both of them in himself. And so the

  282. Christian can say the very prayer that this man

  283. offers, help my unbelief. And we know this to

  284. be true not just of ourselves, but of faithful

  285. men and women throughout scripture. Perhaps you

  286. remember Hebrews chapter 11, what's called the

    Hebrews 11 chapter mention

  287. hall. of faith where you have this listing of

  288. faithful men and women who loved God and yet

  289. struggled with sin. People like Noah and Abraham

  290. and Moses and Samson and Rahab and Samuel and

  291. David. And yet when we struggle with unbelief,

  292. is not Jesus compassionate with us? He certainly

  293. was towards this man because he corrects the

  294. man But he doesn't offer a rebuke here. Look

  295. in verse twenty three. Jesus said to him, if

  296. you can. All things are possible for one who

  297. believes. This has me reflecting upon Christmas.

  298. For you remember when Gabriel speaks to Mary

  299. and she's wondering, how is this whole thing

  300. going to work? Because I'm a virgin. And Gabriel

  301. says nothing will be impossible with God. You

  302. see, friends, nothing can stand in the way of

  303. what Jesus wills to do. All things are possible

  304. for the one who believes. And so we need to check

  305. ourselves here. Do we really believe that? Do

  306. we really believe that Jesus can do all things?

  307. Well, if you struggle with that answer, please

  308. see the remedy here. God gives the remedy within

  309. the text, prayer with repentance. For you see

  310. in verse 24 the word immediately the man wastes

  311. no time Confessing his unbelief. He says I believe

  312. help my own belief Somebody once said that living

  313. without faith is like driving in the fog I Would

  314. say living without faith is like driving 90 miles

  315. an hour in the fog. It's the most dangerous thing

  316. you can do to try and live without faith in Jesus

  317. Christ. We need to read this man's words as prayer,

  318. because while there were others who could perform

  319. exorcisms, and there were others who could perform

  320. healings, who else could help a man with his

  321. unbelief but Jesus? And so this man now sees

  322. Jesus as the Savior, as the Messiah. This is

  323. his prayer, help. my unbelief. And this needs

  324. to be our prayer, too. For we can do nothing

  325. to help ourselves here. It must all be from Jesus.

  326. You cannot help your unbelief anymore that you

  327. can save yourself. And so friends who struggle,

  328. friends who struggle with unbelief, have this

  329. prayer on your lips. Have it at the ready. Memorize

  330. just this short phrase. I believe. Help my unbelief.

  331. You've heard Brittany already saying these words,

  332. I would but can't repent, though I endeavor oft.

  333. This stony heart can never relent till Jesus

  334. makes it soft. Help my unbelief. My help must

  335. come from thee. And so the man needs help, the

  336. disciples need help, and here is Jesus to help.

  337. with this boy he casts out this demon and it

  338. reacts violently such that the boy is laying

  339. there and people are saying he must be dead but

  340. remember the compassion of Jesus to reach down

  341. to stoop down with his hand and to raise the

  342. boy and everybody is in amazement including the

  343. disciples but what do the disciples want to know

  344. they want to know why couldn't we do that We've

  345. done this before. Why couldn't we do it this

  346. time? And so you see here their problem. You

  347. see the disciples have been well trained by the

  348. master. They have authority over these kind of

  349. things, but it's ineffective without prayer.

  350. Sinclair Ferguson says, Jesus is emphasizing

  351. to them the danger of thinking that because God

  352. has called you to a certain kind of ministry,

  353. that you are therefore simply by that call and

  354. able to fulfill that ministry. You can only fulfill

  355. that ministry by constant dependence on the Lord

  356. in prayer to him. Friends, I know many of you,

  357. you made some really good food over the last

  358. week for Christmas. In my house, we had a ton

  359. of cookies, a lot of sugar cookies. What happens

  360. if you leave the sugar out of a cookie? It ain't

  361. good. It's not a good cookie. It's barely a cookie.

  362. Friends, if we attempt ministry without the ingredient

  363. of prayer, it won't be ministry. It will not.

  364. Disciples could have done everything right. They

  365. could have been gentle. They could have been

  366. pastoral. They could have been confident. They

  367. could have done everything just like they saw

  368. Jesus to do. But if they were not dependent on

  369. God exercising prayer, it would not have been

  370. effective. And so this is a lesson for them.

  371. But it's not just that Jesus tells them to pray.

  372. Jesus has also shown them his own prayer life.

  373. You might remember how Jesus, ahead of turning,

  374. ahead of multiplying the loaves and the fish,

  375. what did Jesus do? He prayed. You might remember,

  376. and we haven't looked at this one yet in the

  377. miracles of Jesus, but you might remember Jesus

  378. raising Lazarus. Before he does that, what does

  379. he do? He... Praise There's also good news here

  380. though For the disciples, I think they take this

  381. to heart because in Acts chapter 4 We see some

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  382. of them praying Before they can do anything so

  383. in Acts chapter 4 Versus 29 and onward we see

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  384. their prayer and I'll read just part of it And

  385. now Lord look upon their threats and grant to

  386. your servants to continue to speak your word

  387. with all boldness. So this is their prayer. While

  388. you stretch out your hand to heal and signs and

  389. wonders are performed through the name of your

  390. holy servant Jesus. And when they had prayed

  391. the place in which they were gathered together

  392. was shaken and they were all filled with the

  393. Holy Spirit. and continue to speak the word of

  394. God with boldness. It's like I've said many times,

  395. quoting John Bunyan, you can do nothing until

  396. you have prayed. And so did they forget prayer?

  397. Perhaps in Mark chapter six, Jesus gives authority

  398. to them over the unclean spirits. And so perhaps

  399. the disciples thought, this is sufficient. I

  400. have authority from Jesus so we can do this thing.

  401. They sought to tough it out. on their own. And

  402. as Americans, I think we like these kind of people.

  403. We like tough people, gritty people, people who

  404. can pull themselves up by their bootstraps. In

  405. a lot of ways, that's an admirable quality. But

  406. not in your walk with Jesus. Not in your walk

  407. with Jesus. You must depend upon Jesus. Indeed,

  408. many of you have been gifted beautifully. by

  409. the Holy Spirit with gifts. Every believer has

  410. a gift to exercise, but the gift alone is not

  411. enough. You must depend upon Jesus to exercise

  412. that gift, whatever it is. Maybe you're a teacher

  413. within the church of children or of adults. Maybe

  414. you have musical abilities and you sing in the

  415. choir. Maybe you're an evangelist and you love

  416. to tell people about Jesus. Maybe you're an officer

  417. within this church. These things are wonderful.

  418. Praise God for them. But you must exercise faith

  419. in prayer in order to perform those responsibilities.

  420. And so whatever your gift is, there's something

  421. you must understand. You can only use your gifting

  422. with prayer. There is a direct connection between

  423. unbelief and prayerlessness, right? But prayer

  424. is an expression of our faith. Prayer is an expression

  425. of our faith. It puts our faith to words whenever

  426. we pray to God in the name of Jesus. But you

  427. might say, well, prayer is difficult for me.

  428. I really struggle with that. What kind of practical

  429. help is there for me? Well, from this text alone,

  430. we see something beautiful. We see something

  431. very helpful that you can be honest within your

  432. prayer life. This man is honest because he knows

  433. that Jesus knows I believe help my unbelief We're

  434. probably not all that eager To express to one

  435. another that we struggle with unbelief But you

  436. can certainly express that to Jesus you must

  437. express that to Jesus and know That he helps
