  1. You would take those Bibles and open them to

  2. the Old Testament wisdom book of Ecclesiastes.

  3. As we continue in our sermon series through this

  4. wonderful and yet often neglected book, we are

  5. not neglecting it here at Fairview. We're just

  6. moving right along through it. Ecclesiastes chapter

  7. five focusing. on verses one through seven, and

  8. I would ask you to follow along with me, for

  9. this is God's word. Guard your steps when you

  10. go to the house of God. To draw near to listen

  11. is better than to offer the sacrifice of fools,

  12. for they do not know that they are doing evil.

  13. Be not rash with your mouth, nor let your heart

  14. be hasty to utter a word before God, for God

  15. is in heaven and you are on earth. Therefore,

  16. let your words be few, for a dream comes with

  17. much business and a fool's voice with many words.

  18. When you vow a vow to God, do not delay paying

  19. it, for he has no pleasure in fools. Pay what

  20. you vow. It is better that you should not vow

  21. than that you should vow and not pay. Let not

  22. your mouth lead you into sin. Do not say before

  23. the messenger that it was a mistake. Why should

  24. God be angry at your voice and destroy the work

  25. of your hands? For when dreams increase and words

  26. grow many, there is vanity. But God is the one

  27. you must fear. Blessed are those who hear and

  28. keep what is written. Let us pray. Father, we

  29. bless you and we praise you and we thank you

  30. for your word. As we hear of a word that speaks

  31. of worship and as we hear of a word that speaks

  32. of listening, Lord, would you open up our ears,

  33. our minds and our hearts to know you and to live

  34. out your word. These things we ask in Christ's

  35. name, amen. We have noted it many times in our

  36. study of Ecclesiastes, how many times that Ecclesiastes

  37. seems to be referencing Genesis, and especially

  38. the beginnings of Genesis. And we noted before

  39. the individual that we call Abel, of Cain and

  40. Abel. And we noticed how the word for Abel is

  41. actually the word that is found throughout all

  42. of Ecclesiastes, and it's actually the word Hevel.

  43. And we said how much that Abel fits that, because

  44. for a time Abel was there. And yet because Cain

  45. rose up and struck him down, then Abel was gone.

  46. And this is what the word Hevel, vanity, Shows

  47. us isn't it that it quite literally means a breath

  48. of vapor a mist that is here and it is gone and

  49. so as Abel was there for a time then he was gone,

  50. but You'll notice before that happened. You'll

  51. remember that Cain and Abel were to offer sacrifices

  52. and So they come in Genesis chapter 4 to do that

    Genesis 4 chapter mention

  53. very thing Abel brought a sacrifice of the firstborn

  54. of the flock and it was accepted by the Lord.

  55. Cain's sacrifice, though, was of the fruit of

  56. the ground and it was rejected. Was it the content

  57. of the gift that was rejected or was it the content

  58. of the heart? Well, we don't have to speculate.

  59. The book of Hebrews actually jumps in here to

  60. show us it was a heart issue. Hebrews 11 for

  61. by faith Abel offered the God a more acceptable

  62. sacrifice than Cain Through which he was commended

  63. as righteous God commending him by accepting

  64. his gifts And so we see with Cain and Abel we

  65. see a very foolish sacrifice, don't we? Is that

  66. not also what we see in Ecclesiastes chapter

    Ecclesiastes 5 chapter mention

  67. 5? It opens up speaking of this foolish sacrifice

  68. and what it's really telling us is that we are

  69. to come bringing the sacrifice of praise before

  70. the Lord our God and We should come with hearts

  71. that are ready to worship We should come with

  72. prepared hearts into the very sanctuary of God

  73. to offer to God worship that is less than worshipful

  74. and less than prepared is sinful and it is foolish

  75. and we must repent of our lackadaisical, our

  76. casual way of worship. You'll also note here

  77. within this section that the emphasis on this

  78. passage is on listening. We must pay attention

  79. to the very word of God because we were made

  80. to worship and he tells us how. And so what we

  81. see within this passage are actually two things

  82. here, two actions that are part of worship. He

  83. speaks of sacrificing, and the writer of Ecclesiastes

  84. speaks of vows. And so let's look at sacrifices

  85. first. If you read the Old Testament, you do

  86. see many times that it speaks about sacrifices.

  87. But sacrifices were never to be done casually.

  88. Sacrifices were never to be done by the Israelites

  89. without meaning, without purpose, without heart.

  90. Isaiah chapter 1 shows that God is sickened by

    Isaiah 1 chapter mention

  91. Israel's sacrifices because they're done without

  92. hearts that love him. The book of Amos in chapter

  93. 5 says that God hates their sacrifices because

  94. they are the sacrifices of fools. Their foolishness

  95. is shown in that they don't listen. Sacrificing

  96. without listening is not what God wants. And

  97. throughout the scriptures we are reminded of

  98. this. 1 Samuel 15 22 says to obey is better than

  99. sacrifice. Deuteronomy chapter 6 verse 4 shows

    Deuteronomy 6:4

  100. us this incredible time of listening. Hear, O

  101. Israel, the Lord your God is one. It's as if

  102. God is saying, hear ye, hear ye, pay attention

  103. to what I'm telling you. And certainly we remember

  104. Romans chapter 10 verse 17. Faith comes by what?

    Romans 10:17

  105. By hearing and hearing by the word of Christ

  106. and therefore the believer The action the believer

  107. must have when we come into worship is to listen

  108. and to listen well. Because how does God speak

  109. to his people today? He speaks by his word, doesn't

  110. he? And he does not give his word to be ignored.

  111. The word of God must always be central in our

  112. worship. Therefore, we will never have a worship

  113. service without the reading of God's word. And

  114. this is not just true in kind of New Covenant,

  115. New Testament worship. Actually, you can see

  116. this in Old Testament worship as well, that a

  117. priest would read from the Scriptures. Nehemiah

  118. shows us this very well. The priest would read

  119. from the Scriptures and there would be a time

  120. of silence. There would be a time for listening.

  121. It's just like Ecclesiastes chapter 3 verse 7

    Ecclesiastes 3:7

  122. has to say, there is a time to be silent. and

  123. there's a time to speak and we must really consider

  124. in whose presence we are when we come for worship

  125. because what this passage is doing here it's

  126. not talking about the decided pagan the hard

  127. -hearted person who doesn't want to have anything

  128. to do with God no this is speaking about worshipers

  129. those who desire to come into God's presence

  130. to lift up their voices and praise and to hear

  131. from Him, and yet to offer such praise without

  132. meaning, without heart, without new obedience,

  133. this is wrong. And so we must be mindful of who

  134. God is and who we are when we come into His house.

  135. This also speaks in verse two about our problem.

  136. It's not just that we don't listen, but we talk

  137. too much, some of us more than others. But verse

  138. two puts us in our place, doesn't it? It says,

  139. be not rash with your mouth, nor let your heart

  140. be hasty to utter a word before God for God is

  141. in heaven and you are on earth. This is a reminder

  142. of who God is and who we are. We ought to have

  143. the spirit of David. This has actually already

  144. been referenced by Dalton. But Psalm 8, specifically

  145. verses 3 through 4 should remind us of who we

  146. are and who God is. For it says, when I look

  147. at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the

  148. moon and the stars which you have set in place,

  149. what is man that you're mindful of him? And what

  150. is the son of man that you care for him? Indeed,

  151. God is in heaven and we are on earth. And consider

  152. even the way that Jesus prays, our Father who

  153. art in heaven. When we come before God in worship,

  154. we are addressing the very one who resides in

  155. heaven and who created the heavens and the earth

  156. merely by speaking it into existence. And so

  157. let us respect God. Let us fear God, this text

  158. says in verse seven. On a day in which we should

  159. honor our mothers, and as we remember from the

  160. commandments that we ought to give to respect

  161. to our fathers and to our mothers and to all

  162. in positions of respect and honor, how much more

  163. honor and respect should we have of the eternal,

  164. almighty, and triune God? This shows us that

  165. our words are to be few. We are to be humbled

  166. by God's word and to listen to him. And then

  167. we get this kind of proverb in verse three, for

  168. a dream comes with much business and a fool's

  169. voice with many words. What is this showing us

  170. here? But that there is, as there is kind of

  171. a correlation between the busy body and the nightmares

  172. they have, there's a correlation between the

  173. man who speaks too much and never listens. We

  174. must be people who listen, because as this text

  175. also shows us, to not listen is vanity. To not

  176. listen is evil. And so we must listen. Now, I

  177. know what you may be thinking here, as this is

  178. talking about sacrifices, we're not making sacrifices

  179. right here. We're not slaughtering lambs here

  180. in the sanctuary, are we? And so what kind of

  181. sacrifices do we give? Hebrews chapter 12 28

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  182. through 29 says offer to God acceptable worship

  183. with reverence and awe for God is a consuming

  184. fire. We offer a sacrifice of worship and praise.

  185. We worship the almighty, the eternal and the

  186. triune God. And when we do so, we should recognize

  187. that we are in the very presence of holiness.

  188. Right? We are in the presence of holiness. We

  189. are like Moses Before the burning bush standing

  190. on holy ground This should characterize our worship

  191. this kind of this fear this all this reverence

  192. this respect of God and There is no place in

  193. the sanctuary for flippant casual worship We

  194. are to leave from this sanctuary today saying

  195. To ourselves and to God. I gave my best in worship

  196. today. And so as you go home. And maybe you're

  197. having lunch with the family. Around the table.

  198. Talk about worship. Talk about the scripture,

  199. talk about the sermon. And think to yourself,

  200. did I really give my best in worship today? Too

  201. many churches. Too many worship services are

  202. seeking to have the sort of worship that's all

  203. about me, right? Too many churches are trying

  204. to entertain people. Too many people are trying

  205. to make their worship services about the people

  206. and not about God. We don't have to come up with

  207. creative means of worship because God tells us

  208. how he would like to be worshiped in his word.

  209. But maybe sometimes you leave the sanctuary and

  210. you say, I didn't really get a lot out of that.

  211. Friends, that's the wrong statement to make.

  212. Here's the right question to ask. What did I

  213. put into worship today? What did I put into worship

  214. today? Did you listen to the word? Is your Bible

  215. open? As you are able to read, are you tracking

  216. with what is being said here? Are you are you

  217. seeking to understand it and apply it to your

  218. life? Maybe the preacher isn't your favorite.

  219. Maybe I'm not, but look beyond the preacher to

  220. the very word of God. In order that you can say

  221. Lord, I really listened to you today. But also

  222. this text seems to speak of preparation for worship,

  223. doesn't it? There are some very simple and very

  224. good ways in which we prepare for worship, right?

  225. And so are we going to bed at a good time in

  226. order to be well rested for worship? This is

  227. a way in which we can say, I really gave my best

  228. in worship. As we like to say around our household

  229. and as many of you do, church starts on Saturday

  230. night, doesn't it? So taking care of the things

  231. that you need to do beforehand on Saturday such

  232. that you can really give yourself to worship

  233. but also Are we coming in humility? Right are

  234. we coming in humility into the sanctuary to worship

  235. are we coming with repentant? Obedient hearts

  236. are we praying that God would help us to worship

  237. another way of preparation is Are we holding

  238. grudges when we come into worship? Or are we

  239. settling the score as it is before we come here?

  240. God's word, especially Matthew 5, tells us to

  241. do that. We are to make amends with people before

  242. we come here. And so this is another manner of

  243. preparation for worship. This is how we can offer

  244. to God our sacrifice of praise. But you can also

  245. see, moving on, in verses four through seven,

  246. the second thing that this is about. This has

  247. to do with vows, doesn't it? And as I led off

  248. sharing about a bad sacrifice with Cain, here

  249. let me show you a bad sacrifice from somebody

  250. that you may be familiar with, especially if

  251. you're in the Covenant Sunday School class. We

  252. studied judges recently. Do you remember Jephthah,

  253. right? Jephthah makes a bad vow, doesn't he?

  254. He's coming back from battle and he says, whatever

  255. comes out of my house to meet me when I return,

  256. I will offer as a burnt offering. Tragically,

  257. who comes out the door? His daughter, right?

  258. His daughter comes through the door. And so notice

  259. what this is saying here. It's better to not

  260. vow than to vow and not pay. And as we see from

  261. some other locations, it's better not to vow

  262. than to make a foolish vow. Deuteronomy chapter

    Deuteronomy 23 chapter mention

  263. 23, 21 through 22 says, if you make a vow to

  264. the Lord your God, you shall not delay fulfilling

  265. it. For the Lord your God will surely require

  266. it of you and you will be guilty of sin. But

  267. if you refrain from vowing, you will not be guilty

  268. of sin. Oh, would that Jephthah had read this

  269. portion, remembered this portion. But it's not

  270. only negative vows that we see in Scripture,

  271. we have wonderfully kept vows too. Do you remember

  272. Hannah? Hannah prayed, she vowed that if the

  273. Lord would open her womb, this is in 1 Samuel

  274. 1, if the Lord would open her womb and give her

  275. a child, she would dedicate that child to the

  276. Lord's service. and she kept her vow. And so

  277. what this shows us that as breaking of vows is

  278. terribly sinful and making bad vows is sinful,

  279. keeping our vows brings glory to God. Now our

  280. vows may look a good deal different than what's

  281. talked about here in Ecclesiastes, but we still

  282. do make vows, right? We make marriage vows. baptism

  283. vows of our children, membership vows in the

  284. church, these are taken publicly around us, but

  285. also in the very presence of God. And so we must

  286. remember that when we take vows. Remember who

  287. is listening as you take vows, the holy triune

  288. God. And this God is always true to his word

  289. even when we are not. And so remember your vows

  290. today, friends. Remember your vows that you make

  291. to your spouse. Remember your membership vows

  292. and that you give glory to God husbands when

  293. you love your wives well. Remember your vows

  294. that you made to this church and know that when

  295. you keep them, when you support the work and

  296. the worship of this church, you are keeping your

  297. membership vows and bringing glory to God. And

  298. so maybe this seems like a no -brainer, but be

  299. more like Hannah than Jephthah. Can we do that?

  300. Why? Verse six. Let not your mouth lead you into

  301. sin and do not say before the messenger that

  302. it was a mistake. Why should God be angry at

  303. your voice and destroy the work of your hands?

  304. Let not your mouth lead you into sin. This is

  305. one of the reasons that I think actually Solomon

  306. wrote this book because it sounds remarkably

  307. similar to some of the Proverbs. Proverbs 10

  308. 19 when words are many, transgression is not

  309. lacking. And yet sometimes we do maybe run our

  310. mouths a little bit. Sometimes we do say foolish

  311. things. Sometimes we take vows and we don't keep

  312. them. Sometimes we talk badly about one another.

  313. And sometimes people leave the church because

  314. of that. They say those hypocrites over there,

  315. they say one thing and they do the other thing.

  316. Friends, this should obviously tell us to keep

  317. our word. But doesn't this also show us that

  318. there is no perfect church under the sun? Yes.

  319. One of the vows that we take is that we are sinners,

  320. right? I don't know of any other place on the

  321. planet, I'm sure there is one, other than the

  322. local church, where in order to be a member you

  323. have to say, yeah, I'm a sinner. They don't ask

  324. you that when you go for membership at the gym,

  325. right? And so we recognize that, that this is

  326. an imperfect church, right? But isn't that how

  327. God has always operated, working with imperfect

  328. people? Do you remember the disciples? Nobody's

  329. first choice, right? And yet Jesus worked with

  330. them and he taught them and they were the ones

  331. who took the church out after his death and resurrection

  332. and his ascension and the church just exploded

  333. upon the scene. God has always worked with imperfect

  334. people. and he's sanctifying us along the way.

  335. And so today, maybe you need some encouragement

  336. with your vows. Maybe you need some encouragement

  337. with your worship. Notice how verse one and verse

  338. four are written. I'll read part of these again.

  339. Verse one, guard your steps when you go to the

  340. house of God. Verse 4, when you vow a vow to

  341. God. And I think that this is clearly seen in

  342. most translations. It's a good translation to

  343. see the word when. Friends, the word is when,

  344. not if. And so perhaps today, you're struggling

  345. with that membership vow. Perhaps today, you're

  346. struggling to love your spouse well. You have

  347. another opportunity right here, right now. When

  348. you go, not if. And so yes, there's grace for

  349. the failure. And Lord willing, if Jesus continues

  350. to tarry, will we not be right here in the same

  351. place again next week, again, when, not if? We

  352. need to be here in order to keep our vows, but

  353. God is refining us. He is creating, listening

  354. hearts. He's stirring up our joyful hearts, right?

  355. And so we keep worshiping. But how can we do

  356. it? How can we continue to worship? We must remember

  357. that God keeps his vows. God keeps his. promises.

  358. Think of some of the most remarkable promises

  359. in scripture. I really love from John six when

  360. Jesus says the father will lose nothing that

  361. he has given to the son or remember the promise

  362. of the spirit from Joel that comes alive. in

  363. Acts chapter two. Remember the promise of the

  364. regenerated heart in the book of Jeremiah. God

  365. is faithful to all of these promises and that

  366. knowing that God keeps his promises should stir

  367. up worship and affection for him. In terms of

  368. sacrifice, we give our sacrifice of praise because

  369. Jesus sacrificed his life. and talk about listening,

  370. talk about an economy of words. Isaiah 53 shows

  371. us that Jesus was like a lamb led to the slaughter,

  372. but he opened not his mouth. He opened not his

  373. mouth, instead enduring all of the pain of the

  374. very wrath of God for you and for me. And it's

  375. through him that we have access to the Father.

  376. Verse two, if you look there again, and as I

  377. already said, it puts us in a place that God

  378. is in heaven and you are on earth. Isn't that

  379. though what Jesus does coming from heaven to

  380. earth in order to save us? Because of this, we

  381. have access to the Father. Hebrews chapter 10.

    Hebrews 10 chapter mention

  382. Therefore, my friends, since we have confidence

  383. to enter the sanctuary by the blood of Jesus,

  384. by the new and living way that he opened for

  385. us through the curtain, that is through his flesh,

  386. and since we have a great high priest over the

  387. house of God, let us approach with a true heart

  388. and full assurance of faith. You and I, we can

  389. be here because of Jesus and his sacrifice for

  390. us. In short, you worship because Jesus gave

  391. up his life for you. And so, as I conclude, when

  392. you're sluggish on Sunday mornings to get here

  393. and you would rather just continue to slumber,

  394. listen to the very word of God. Be reminded what

  395. Jesus did for you. When you find it hard to keep

  396. your marriage vows after yet another argument,

  397. remember what Jesus did for you. When your family

  398. worship maybe isn't going as well as you had

  399. hoped later today, remember what Jesus did for

  400. you. Listen to the scriptures. Remember that

  401. Jesus is your sacrifice and that he is the yes

  402. and he is the amen. to all of the promises of

  403. God. Let us pray.
