  1. And if you would turn with me to the Old Testament

  2. wisdom book of Ecclesiastes. Ecclesiastes chapter

    Ecclesiastes 12 chapter mention

  3. 12. We will look at verses 9 through 14. And

  4. this is the end of this book, which brings us

  5. to the end of our sermon series through Ecclesiastes.

  6. I'm sad about that. I love this book. We will

  7. be moving Lord willing into the book of Hebrews

  8. next and so look forward to that even read ahead

  9. in Hebrews But for now, let us see these closing

  10. words of God's Word Ecclesiastes 12 9 to 14 Besides

  11. being wise the preacher also taught the people

  12. knowledge weighing and Studying and arranging

  13. many Proverbs with great care The preacher sought

  14. to find words of delight, and uprightly he wrote

  15. words of truth. The words of the wise are like

  16. goads, and like nails, firmly fixed are the collected

  17. sayings. They are given by one shepherd. My son,

  18. beware of anything beyond these. Of making many

  19. books, there is no end. And much study is a weariness

  20. of the flesh. The end of the matter. All has

  21. been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments,

  22. for this is the whole duty of man. For God will

  23. bring every deed into judgment. Blessed is he

  24. who hears and keeps what is written. Let us pray.

  25. Father, we do thank you for Ecclesiastes. And

  26. as we come to the end of this series, I pray

  27. that we would see that you still have much more

  28. for us. And so would you open up our ears, open

  29. our minds, open our hearts to hear from you now.

  30. For we pray in Christ's name, amen. I saw a comic

  31. strip recently that pictured a man climbing the

  32. peak of a mountain. Very high mountain, snow

  33. capped. High above the other mountains, it might

  34. as well have been Everest. And the man is climbing

  35. it and he gets to the very summit and he kind

  36. of peeks over the top of the peak. And there

  37. was a wise, what appeared to be a wise man sitting

  38. on top of the mountain. You know how this is

  39. pictured. There's a wise man sitting there and

  40. you climb to the top to find the meaning of life.

  41. And that's what this climber was doing. And so

  42. he hoists himself up onto the peak and he sees

  43. this supposed wise man sitting there and he says

  44. to him, would you tell me the meaning of life?

  45. And this supposed wise man laughs and he says,

  46. the meaning of life. You want my brother, third

  47. mountain down on the right. I'm just a hermit,

  48. he said. We've all pursued what we thought was

  49. the meaning of life. What we thought would bring

  50. us happiness and satisfaction. What we thought

  51. would bring us all of the answers to this life.

  52. Friends, we have all climbed the wrong mountain.

  53. In Ecclesiastes, though, the teacher shows us

  54. that he has climbed all of the wrong mountains

  55. for you. He pursued pleasure. He pursued work.

  56. He pursued hobbies. He pursued riches. He even

  57. pursued wisdom and so much more. And yet, ultimately,

  58. he found them all to be lacking. Solomon has

  59. climbed the wrong peaks so you can climb the

  60. right one. Fear God and keep His commandments.

  61. I wonder how your view of Ecclesiastes has changed

  62. after having studied it. Have you seen the wisdom?

  63. Have you seen the joy? Have you seen the cautions

  64. this book offers? Well today what I want you

  65. to see is that Ecclesiastes speaks as the Word

  66. of God and Ecclesiastes speaks of the meaning

  67. of God. So the word of God today and the meaning

  68. of God look at verses 9 through 12 to begin Throughout

  69. history Really since this book was written the

  70. the canonicity Its place in the Bible has been

  71. questioned and because you have statements in

  72. Ecclesiastes that saying things like well, don't

  73. be too righteous and don't be too wise Head scratcher,

  74. right? Or you have statements just like the mantra

  75. throughout Ecclesiastes, vanity of vanities,

  76. all is vanity. You write things like that, you

  77. put it into a book, and people question it. They

  78. have serious questions. Should this be in the

  79. Bible? Why is this here? But friends, chapter

  80. 12 is written in such a way as to have you know

  81. that this is from God. Look at verse 9. Verse

  82. 9 shows us here that the preacher, and he's either

  83. talking about himself in the third person or

  84. perhaps some have suggested there's a narrator

  85. here, but he shows us that he did not acquire

  86. wisdom simply for himself. No. He acquired wisdom

  87. in order to teach others. And one way he does

  88. this is by studying Proverbs, the ESV says here.

  89. He taught the people knowledge, weighing and

  90. studying and arranging many Proverbs. Now, this

  91. could refer to the book of Proverbs, the Proverbs

  92. that are in that, but it could also refer to

  93. other wisdom literature. Either way, what we

  94. recognize about this teacher is that he's not

  95. just a writer of wisdom literature, he's also

  96. a student of wisdom literature. And his goal

  97. was to put truth before the people. He sought

  98. to find true words and he also sought to write

  99. them. But sometimes those words can hurt. Look

  100. at verse 11. The words of the wise are like goads.

  101. Anybody here have sheep or cattle? I know a couple

  102. of people, a couple of you do, right? Well, What

  103. is a goat? A goat is like an ancient cattle prod,

  104. like a large pointed stick or maybe a stick even

  105. with some sort of a nail in the end of it that

  106. you would use to get the animals to move in the

  107. right direction. This sort of instrument works

  108. because it hurts. Well, friends, if the words

  109. of Ecclesiastes have hurt at times, if the words

  110. of Ecclesiastes have stepped on your toes, as

  111. some of you have said, That's intentional. In

  112. some ways, commentators have said, Ecclesiastes

  113. acts like the opposite of Psalm 23. You remember

  114. Psalm 23, your rod and your staff, they comfort

  115. me. Well, here we have in Ecclesiastes 12, not

  116. the rod and staff that comfort, but the cattle

  117. prod that hurts. But we need that painful instruction,

  118. don't we at times? It is true the Lord disciplines

  119. those he loves, but it's not just the prodding

  120. that happens. Look at the other imagery that's

  121. used here, like nails, firmly fixed. This might

  122. be more accurately translated pegs or stakes.

  123. Pegs are stakes that are driven in the ground

  124. to hold something. Think of a tent. If you have

  125. your tent and it's staked into the ground, even

  126. when the wind comes, you'll be taken care of,

  127. right? You'll be grounded in safety. And that's

  128. what biblical instruction does. It keeps us grounded

  129. in the truth. But friends, you gotta have the

  130. truth, don't you? Because if you don't have the

  131. right instruction, then you're inflicting pain

  132. for no good reason. or you're being staked down,

  133. nailed down into something that's not true. And

  134. that's why the end of verse 11 is so critical.

  135. Look there. The nails firmly fixed are the collected

  136. sayings they are given by one shepherd. This

  137. kind of phrasing of one shepherd, to the best

  138. of my knowledge, is only used in three places.

  139. in the Old Testament, one here and two in Ezekiel.

  140. And in Ezekiel, what's going on when it talks

  141. about this one shepherd is it is the Lord promising

  142. to Israel a glorious future under one shepherd,

  143. a king like David. Listen to this from Ezekiel

  144. 37. My servant David shall be king over them

  145. and they shall have all one shepherd. My servant

  146. David. shall be their prince forever. Now friends,

  147. David was a fantastic king, but he wasn't king

  148. forever. And so who is this one shepherd? Who

  149. is this really talking about? Well, the New Testament

  150. helps us with this because Jesus actually refers

  151. to himself as the one shepherd. And he refers

  152. to himself as the good shepherd. Jesus identifies

  153. himself in these ways. And didn't Jesus in his

  154. teaching ministry talk like this? Yes, he did.

  155. Sometimes he used painful instruction as well,

  156. like these goads that are mentioned. Jesus used

  157. his words as goads when he told Peter, get behind

  158. me, Satan. Or when he told the people, he called

  159. the people, you brood of vipers. Or listen to

  160. this, from Acts chapter 26, Acts chapter 26,

Acts 26 chapter mention Acts 26 chapter mention

  161. 12 through 15, this is the apostle Paul speaking

  162. of the time that he heard the words of Jesus.

  163. In this connection, I journeyed to Damascus with

  164. the authority and commission of the chief priests.

  165. At midday, O King, I saw on the way a light from

  166. heaven brighter than the sun that shone around

  167. me and those who journeyed with me. And when

  168. we had fallen to the ground, I heard a voice

  169. saying in the Hebrew language, Saul, Saul, why

  170. are you persecuting me? It is hard for you to

  171. kick. against the goads. And I said, who are

  172. you, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus, whom

  173. you are persecuting. The goading words of Jesus

  174. on the Damascus road turned Saul into Paul. The

  175. goading words of Jesus turned the persecutor

  176. into the preacher. Yes, it's true. The Lord disciplines

  177. those he loves, and his word is truth. Well,

  178. let me ask you, what kind of instruction, what

  179. kind of wisdom, what kind of truth, if you can

  180. have kinds of it, are you absorbing these days?

  181. We live in the information age, don't we? I wonder

  182. what Solomon would have thought of an Alexa.

  183. What would Solomon think of AI? Friends, Christians,

  184. be careful. of what you listen to. This instruction

  185. here, if you can look at verse 12, my son, beware

  186. of anything beyond these, of making many books,

  187. there is no end. And much study is a weariness

  188. of the flesh. Now students who are in school,

  189. please don't quote this to your parents and say,

  190. I don't need to study. It's not what's going

  191. on here. I like what preacher, Douglas O'Donnell

  192. said, what is required is not more books for

  193. more study, but more obedience to what has already

  194. been revealed. And what is revealed here, as

  195. we move into verse 13, is of the utmost importance.

  196. So look there. Again, kids, when you're in school,

  197. you're learning to write. And your teacher might

  198. be teaching you to write a paper and say that

  199. in a paper you have a beginning, a middle, and

  200. an end. And sometimes they'll tell you in the

  201. end of the paper you should say something to

  202. indicate this is the end. And so you say, in

  203. summary or in conclusion. But then when you get

  204. a little older, the teachers They tell you not

  205. to do that anymore. It sounds mechanical. It

  206. sounds fluid. Find a better way to say this.

  207. Well, Solomon here, inspired by the Holy Spirit,

  208. does not have a better way of saying this. He

  209. wants you to know very clearly in black and white

  210. the summary, the conclusion, the end of the matter.

  211. And here it is, the big point. Fear God. and

  212. keep his commandments. But what does it mean

  213. to fear God? Well, it's a central concept of

  214. wisdom literature that's expressed throughout

  215. the Bible to fear God. It's a very big and important

  216. phrase, and it's very hard to define. But we'll

  217. try it anyway. To fear God is to believe in God

  218. and in believing in God, recognizing who he is

  219. and his holiness. Think about the Westminster

  220. Shorter Catechism. As it asks the question, what

  221. is God? And it answers, God is a spirit, infinite,

  222. eternal, and unchangeable in His being, wisdom,

  223. power, holiness, justice, goodness, and truth.

  224. When we consider the fear of God and His holiness,

  225. we should be like Isaiah. When Isaiah the prophet

  226. was confronted with the holiness of God, he exclaimed,

  227. woe is me, I am undone. We should have this trembling

  228. reverence for God while also recognizing this

  229. holy God, the creator of the universe, omniscient,

  230. omnipotent, omnipresent, and immutable. He is

  231. also love. And in His love and in His mercy,

  232. He saves sinners through the life and the blood

  233. of His own Son. recognizing what he does and

  234. who he is should manifest itself in worship and

  235. in holy living and in obedience and in loving

  236. him with all of our hearts quite frankly the

  237. fear of God should make us more like Jesus I

  238. wonder if you've ever considered this passage

  239. before in this way Isaiah chapter 11. Isaiah

    Isaiah 11 chapter mention

  240. 11, the beginning of it, is a text that is usually

  241. quoted at Christmas time, and yet it speaks of

  242. the fear of the Lord. Listen to this. There shall

  243. come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and

  244. a branch from his roots shall bear fruit. and

  245. the spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the

  246. spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit

  247. of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge

  248. and the fear of the Lord, and his delight shall

  249. be in the fear of the Lord. Friends, the fear

  250. of Yahweh is Jesus's delight. Is it yours? Is

  251. it yours? Do you fear God? I find that there

  252. are some obstacles to us being able to rightly

  253. fear God. I want to give you three of them. One

  254. obstacle to the fear of God is our own sin. You

  255. remember in the garden, Adam and Eve, they fell

  256. into sin and they began to hide from God. Their

  257. relationship with God was interrupted. It was

  258. interfered with and our sin interferes with our

  259. relationship with God. Friends, when we realize

  260. how heinous our sin is and yet how holy God is,

  261. we should fear Him. Hebrews 10 says, it's a fearful

  262. thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

  263. And yet let's also acknowledge that this is true.

  264. We. We're gonna either fear him as he intends

  265. or we're gonna fear him on the last day. Preacher

  266. Jeff Thomas said, a stranger to the fear of God

  267. is a stranger to the living God himself. So our

  268. first obstacle is our own sin. Secondly, though,

  269. we fear the wrong things. President FDR famously

  270. said, the only thing we have to fear is fear

  271. itself. But friends, when we rightly fear God,

  272. it puts all the other fears into place. Whether

  273. you're scared of heights, whether you're afraid

  274. of the dark, whether you fear losing a loved

  275. one, whether you fear losing your job, whether

  276. you fear losing your health, whether you fear

  277. a stock market crash, whether you fear from a

  278. scary movie or the fear from the loss of your

  279. own reputation, many of us fear things rather

  280. than fearing. and trusting God. And so that's

  281. the second issue we have. But the third issue,

  282. and I think it goes along with number one, is

  283. perhaps the most saddening. We are cavalier about

  284. God. We are cavalier about God. And what a foolish

  285. thing that is. Modern culture tells you that

  286. Jesus is your homeboy. and that the Old Testament

  287. God is one of wrath and the New Testament God

  288. is nothing more than a benevolent grandfather.

  289. Friends, we need to have a better understanding

  290. of who God is and a better understanding of what

  291. God does. Think about all that God does throughout

  292. the Bible that we can read about. We recognize

  293. that God was able to speak the world into existence,

  294. that He created all that there is. Our triune

  295. God looked upon the wickedness of man and flooded

  296. the entire world. Our triune God parted the waters

  297. to deliver his people from slavery. Our triune

  298. God provided bread from heaven and water from

  299. a rock. Our triune God defeated enemy nations

  300. along the way, slaying giants, speaking through

  301. a donkey, closing the mouths of lions, and opening

  302. the mouth of a great fish to swallow a prophet

  303. and save him. Our triune God defeated enemy nations

  304. along the way. He raised up the patriarchs and

  305. the judges and the prophets and he used some

  306. of the most unlikely men and women to accomplish

  307. his purposes. And then just at the right time,

  308. God sent forth his Son, born of a woman conceived

  309. by the Holy Spirit. This son, Jesus, the second

  310. person in the Trinity came to live and die in

  311. our place. And as he was crucified, as he breathed

  312. his last, the sky went pitch black and the sun

  313. cried out, my God, my God, why have you forsaken

  314. me? And the curtain of the temple was torn in

  315. two, an earthquake happened, tombs were opened,

  316. bodies of the saints came out of the tombs, and

  317. a Roman centurion watched all of this and he

  318. said, truly. This was the son of God. And Matthew

  319. 27 says he was filled with awe, meaning in that

  320. moment he feared God. Friends, to fear God is

  321. to believe in God. And to rightly believe in

  322. God is to believe in Christ. And to believe in

  323. Christ is to know that he died in your place.

  324. And knowing that he died in your place. It happens

  325. at the cross. That's where the fear of God lies

  326. at the cross. And such fear should produce within

  327. us obedience. And so back to the text here as

  328. I begin to wrap up, it says fear God, but it

  329. also says this, keep his commandments. This is

  330. reminiscent of Jesus telling his disciples. Why

  331. do you call me Lord Lord and don't do what I

  332. tell you it is an oxymoron To call Jesus your

  333. Savior But not your Lord Keeping his commandments

  334. is spoken in the same breath as fearing God and

  335. so to disregard the Word of God is to disregard

  336. God himself the one who fears God obeys God and

  337. verse 14 says that every deed will be brought

  338. into judgment Friends, God knows all, and every

  339. single person will have to give an account for

  340. their every thought, every word, and every deed.

  341. And if I can show you as I conclude how important

  342. this is, as if you couldn't see it already, hone

  343. in here on the end of verse 13. The ESV, the

  344. NIV, the NLT, the King James Version all render

  345. this the whole duty of man. And the New American

  346. Standard Bible says this applies to every person.

  347. But friends, if you were to able to look at this

  348. in the Hebrew, you would actually see there is

  349. no word here for duty or responsibility. And

  350. the Hebrew goes beyond saying this is just for

  351. everyone. Literally, this says this is the all

  352. of man. I like the new King James on this. It

  353. says, fear God and keep his commandments for

  354. this is man's all. You see, fearing God and keeping

  355. his commandments, believing in God, it's not

  356. firstly a duty or responsibility. It describes

  357. who man is to be. We might say it like this,

  358. to be a human being is to fear God and keep his

  359. commandments. Note that I didn't say to be a

  360. Christian is this, no. That wouldn't be going

  361. far enough. To fear God is central to who we

  362. are as people. To be alive ought to be to fear

  363. God. Who we are as people made to fear God is

  364. then not firstly about your responsibilities

  365. or what you do. Fearing God is not firstly about

  366. your church membership. It's not firstly about

  367. your denomination, your attendance, your titles

  368. within the church. Fearing God is not firstly

  369. about how many years you spent teaching Sunday

  370. school, how many years you spent singing in the

  371. choir, or how many terms you served as an elder

  372. or deacon. Fearing God rightly is not firstly

  373. about how many mission trips you've gone on,

  374. or how many hungry people you have fed. or how

  375. much money you give away. Fearing God is not

  376. firstly about how many systematic theology books

  377. that you have read, which Bible reading plan

  378. you choose, or your favorite Christian podcast.

  379. It's not firstly where you went to Bible college

  380. or which conferences you've been to or which

  381. seminary you've been to. It isn't firstly about

  382. how many sermons you've preached or lessons you

  383. have taught. Listen. All of those things are

  384. very good things and they might be part of your

  385. fearing God. But those things are all fleeting

  386. and those things can actually be done without

  387. a heart for God. Sometimes friends, I think that

  388. we like to substitute the fear of God for the

  389. things that we do. And God is not impressed.

  390. The fear of God. isn't firstly what you do. The

  391. fear of God firstly is who you are. And what

  392. you do flows from who you are. The keeping of

  393. His commandments flows from your trembling reverence.

  394. And so let me ask you, who are you? Who are you?

  395. Are you a God -fearer? Are you in Christ? Or

  396. are you not? The one who is in Christ gets the

  397. meaning of life. But the one who is not has climbed

  398. the wrong mountains. I hope you'll agree with

  399. me. The message of Ecclesiastes is not about

  400. meaninglessness. It's about how every single

  401. thing in this life is meaningful. And the meaning

  402. is this. Fear God and keep His commandments.

  403. Because this is your all. Let me pray.
