  1. Let's take our Bibles and open up to Isaiah 52.

  2. Towards the end of the chapter in verse 13, we'll

  3. pick up there and we're going to go through verse

  4. 12 tonight. I know that we're kind of parachuting

  5. in to this location and it may have been a while

  6. since we were in Isaiah, so just a little bit

  7. of where we are within this text before I read

  8. and pray. Within this portion of Isaiah, there

  9. are several different songs that are composed,

  10. if you will, by the prophet Isaiah. And they're

  11. all very good, they're very special, but the

  12. one that we look at tonight, I might say is the

  13. kind of climactic song within Isaiah. This text

  14. here has everything to do with what we are doing

  15. here tonight. This is all about the suffering

  16. servant. And so let's pay attention to the reading

  17. of God's holy inspired word from Isaiah 52 beginning

  18. in verse 13. Behold, my servant shall act wisely.

  19. He shall be high and lifted up and shall be exalted.

  20. As many were astonished at you, his appearance

  21. was so marred beyond human semblance and his

  22. form beyond that of the children of mankind.

  23. So shall he sprinkle many nations. Kings shall

  24. shut their mouths because of him. For that which

  25. has not been told them they see and that which

  26. they have not believed they understand. Who has

  27. believed what he has heard from us and to whom

  28. has the arm of the Lord been revealed? For he

  29. grew up before him like a young plant and like

  30. a root out of dry ground. He had no form or majesty

  31. that we should look at him and no beauty that

  32. we should desire him. He was despised and rejected

  33. by men, a man of sorrows and acquainted with

  34. grief, and as one from whom men hide their faces.

  35. He was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely

  36. he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows,

  37. yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God

  38. and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions.

  39. He was crushed for our iniquities. Upon him was

  40. the chastisement that brought us peace, and with

  41. his wounds we are healed. All we like sheep have

  42. gone astray. We have turned everyone to his own

  43. way, and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity

  44. of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted,

  45. yet he opened not his mouth, like a lamb that

  46. is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that

  47. before its shearers is silent, so he opened not

  48. his mouth. By oppression and judgment he was

  49. taken away, and as for his generation, who considered

  50. that he was cut off out of the land of the living,

  51. stricken for the transgression of my people?

  52. And they made his grave with the wicked, and

  53. with a rich man in his death, although he had

  54. done no violence, and there was no deceit in

  55. his mouth. Yet it was the will of the Lord to

  56. crush him. He has put him to grief. When his

  57. soul makes an offering for guilt, he shall see

  58. his offspring. He shall prolong his days. The

  59. will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. Out

  60. of the anguish of his soul, he shall see and

  61. be satisfied. By his knowledge shall the righteous

  62. one, my servant, make many to be accounted righteous.

  63. and he shall bear their iniquities therefore

  64. I will divide him a portion with the many and

  65. he shall divide the spoil with the strong because

  66. he has poured out his soul to death and was numbered

  67. with the transgressors yet he bore the sin of

  68. many and makes intercession for the transgressors

  69. this is God's word let us pray Almighty God,

  70. we read this text and there is no doubt in our

  71. minds that this is about our Savior Jesus Christ.

  72. Father, would you move within us to have a greater

  73. appreciation for what Jesus did, that he offered

  74. up himself on the cross in order to make atonement

  75. and to save us from what we deserve. Would you

  76. grant us understanding? Now we pray for Christ's

  77. sake. Amen. Charles Haddon Spurgeon said of this

  78. text that it is the holy of holies of divine

  79. writ. He said when you read this text you are

  80. treading on holy ground. You've heard this text,

  81. but still you might be asking how so? How is

  82. this such an important text? What was Spurgeon

  83. getting at when he said that? If you really pay

  84. attention to this text what you realize is that

  85. Isaiah has this to say, as if he is at Golgotha.

  86. It is as if Jesus is there in front of Isaiah

  87. being crucified. And yet, if you look at the

  88. nature of the text, the way that this is written,

  89. it's all very interesting. Because you probably

  90. noticed that the tense of the verbs, it's in

  91. the past tense, isn't it? And yet the prophet,

  92. is writing with the crucifixion of Jesus still

  93. hundreds of years in the future. He's writing

  94. in the past tense about something that has not

  95. yet happened. And so the way that this reads

  96. is almost as if Isaiah is at the very end of

  97. time reflecting on what might be just the most

  98. pivotal moment in all of human history. And it's

  99. so accurate, isn't it? It's so precise if you

  100. are a Christian tonight There's no way that you

  101. can walk away from this text and not know this

  102. is about your Savior And yet people do deny this

  103. text. It's as Paul says in Romans chapter 1 people

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  104. really do suppress the truth But there's no suppressing

  105. this because Isaiah writes this he portrays this

  106. just as clearly as Matthew and Mark and Luke

  107. and John by this chapter this passage has been

  108. called the fifth gospel because it's about Christ

  109. alone. Tonight I want you to get just one main

  110. point that Jesus is the suffering servant for

  111. you. He's the suffering servant for you. But

  112. two ways in which we see this, Jesus was wounded

  113. for us and Jesus is declared guilty for us. Look

  114. at 52 14. It says his appearance was so marred

  115. beyond human semblance. What this means is that

  116. Jesus was quite literally beaten beyond recognition.

  117. You've perhaps heard of the instrument that was

  118. used upon Jesus. some sort of a whip with a sharp

  119. bone and metal in it, that when it was hit upon

  120. his flesh, it would tear away flesh and it would

  121. expose organs. In addition to that, when that

  122. instrument was used, oftentimes the person was

  123. tied with their hands above their head. Sometimes

  124. those strikes could be fatal. know your Bible

  125. well, you might have read that a person could

  126. only be hit 39 times according to Jewish law.

  127. That's in Deuteronomy, but Paul also speaks of

  128. it in 2 Corinthians. Only 39 times, but here's

  129. the thing about that. Who is the one who is actually

  130. beating Jesus? It's not the Jews. It's the Roman

  131. soldiers. And I hardly, hardly believe they cared

  132. very much about what Jewish law had to say. You

  133. see in verse five, his wounds, his stripes. This

  134. in some ways is more graphic than even the gospels.

  135. And yet it's not the only place where we see

  136. this sort of thing. You don't have to turn there,

  137. but listen to these words from Psalm 22, 16 through

  138. 18. They have pierced my hands and feet. I can

  139. count all my bones. They stare and gloat over

  140. me. They divide my garments among them, and for

  141. my clothing they cast lots. Doesn't this sound

  142. like Jesus to you? Of course it does, because

  143. that same Psalm is the one that Jesus utters

  144. on the cross. For you know these words on the

  145. cross. Jesus said, my God, my God, why have you

  146. forsaken me? These prophecies, they're so accurate,

  147. for we know. that Jesus was fastened to the cross

  148. by nails in his hands and his feet. We know that

  149. a spear was thrust through his side after he

  150. gave up his spirit. Look in verse five. He was

  151. pierced for our transgressions. Friends, when

  152. the text uses this word, your word here in English,

  153. pierce, this is actually using one of the most

  154. violent terms. the Old Testament. This is what

  155. was done to our Lord Jesus Christ. This is, as

  156. some have said, the death blow when He was pierced

  157. for our transgressions and He was crushed, destroyed

  158. for us. And we know that crucifixion is perhaps,

  159. no it is, the most torturous way to die. I'm

  160. not medical, but I do know that Jesus experienced

  161. there on the cross unexplainable pain, dizziness,

  162. fever, cramping, tendons throbbing, exposed organs

  163. bleeding, shock, asphyxia, thirst and dehydration.

  164. Anybody else on that cross would have surely

  165. sought the sweet relief of death, but it was

  166. not finished until Jesus said, it is finished.

  167. Jesus underwent that for you. That's what you

  168. need to know tonight. Jesus went through that

  169. for you. And it seems so clear to us, doesn't

  170. it? And yet, look at verse three. It says that

  171. we esteemed him not. What this is getting at,

  172. what Isaiah is getting at, is that people didn't

  173. believe. This prophecy in Isaiah's day, people

  174. didn't believe it in Jesus's day, and people

  175. don't believe that now. This is about unbelief.

  176. And you would think in Jesus's time, Messianic

  177. expectation would have been very high, and yet

  178. people reject Jesus. They did, and they still

  179. do. People today say things like, well, I do

  180. believe that Jesus was a good man. And I do believe

  181. that Jesus was a good teacher. And I even believe

  182. that Jesus was a good prophet. Friends, he is

  183. certainly those things, but he is so much more.

  184. He's the only Messiah, the only one who could

  185. truly say, no greater love has this than someone

  186. lay down his life for his friends. And yet the

  187. laying down of his life is really only the beginning.

  188. Because not only was he wounded for you, not

  189. only was he killed for you, He was declared guilty

  190. for you. Nothing gets people more riled up it

  191. seems these days than innocent punishment and

  192. yet this is what Jesus submitted himself to.

  193. He who committed no sin became sin for us. His

  194. suffering then is vicarious. Because people sin,

  195. Christ as mediator was punished. And because

  196. Christ as mediator was punished, we get his righteousness.

  197. Perhaps you've wondered, how does Jesus' dying

  198. have anything to do with the removal of my sin?

  199. How does this work? Well, look in verses 10 and

  200. 11. Verse 10, his righteousness is ours because

  201. his soul makes offering for guilt. Verse 11,

  202. many to be accounted righteous as he bears their

  203. iniquities. This is how atonement works. You

  204. remember the Old Testament sacrifices that had

  205. to be offered again and again and again to make

  206. atonement. But with Jesus it doesn't have to

  207. happen again and again and again because he is

  208. the perfect sacrifice He takes our sins upon

  209. himself and a transaction takes place where we

  210. who believe in him are credited with his righteousness

  211. We get peace with God we get new hearts that

  212. are not stained by sin But understand even as

  213. Jesus did this for us He did it for us, meaning

  214. that they did not take his life because he laid

  215. it down. Jesus laid his life down. Look in verses

  216. four, six, and 10. You see the phrase, smitten

  217. by whom? By God. Verse six, the Lord has laid

  218. on him the iniquity of us all. Verse 10. It was

  219. the will of the Lord to crush him. And so he

  220. was wounded, and he was rendered guilty for you,

  221. and it was the only way. Jesus said it best.

  222. I am the way and the truth and the life. No one

  223. comes to the Father but through me. Christ is

  224. the only one who could make atonement as a perfect

  225. sacrifice. And so the Father offered up the Son

  226. to save his people. But you don't have to take

  227. my word for it. Because Peter in his sermon in

  228. Acts 2 speaks of this perfect plan to save sinners.

  229. Acts 2 23, this Jesus delivered up according

  230. to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God,

  231. you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless

  232. men. Why would the Father offer up the Son in

  233. this way? Why? Friends, it's for his glory. It

  234. is for his glory. Do you remember the high priestly

  235. prayer of Jesus in John 17? He begins his prayer

  236. like this, Father, the hour has come. Glorify

  237. your Son that the Son may glorify you. The purpose

  238. for the Son is to give glory to the Father. this

  239. is also communicated within our text tonight

  240. because how does verse 13 go in chapter 52 behold

  241. my servant shall act wisely he shall be high

  242. and lifted up and shall be exalted but also look

  243. at the end of the pericope because there towards

  244. the end we also see this in verse 12 of 53 therefore

  245. I will divide him a portion with the many and

  246. he shall divide the spoil with the strong the

  247. picture here is that as Jesus is crucified on

  248. the cross, we who are in Christ are victorious

  249. with Christ. You have victory with Jesus. He

  250. did this for us such that as Jesus is raised,

  251. one day we too shall be raised to be with God.

  252. And that's about glorification. That's really

  253. what we're doing here tonight. We are here to

  254. give glory to Father Son and Holy Spirit and

  255. To be encouraged and to have hope because there

  256. are many miseries in this life aren't there?

  257. You're all going through something. You've been

  258. through something or you will go through something

  259. Might be cancer Might be slander Might be job

  260. loss Might be persecution Might be the loss of

  261. a loved one if you are tired of that Today is

  262. the day of salvation to give yourself to the

  263. Lord Jesus Christ who one day will save us from

  264. all of this. He will lift us up to be with God.

  265. But in the here and now, what is the point? What's

  266. the point of what we are doing here? If you know

  267. you're short of catechism, it's to glorify God

  268. and to enjoy Him forever. And yet people who

  269. deny who Jesus is, they don't live for God because

  270. they don't see a need for God. And they don't

  271. see a need for the righteousness of Christ because

  272. they think they are righteous in their own eyes.

  273. They don't need to glorify God because they're

  274. glorifying themselves. Friends, Jesus died so

  275. that we could glorify God. Tonight I pray that

  276. you would be strengthened in your faith in the

  277. suffering servant, that his death and his resurrection

  278. would bring you hope, but I'm also aware there

  279. could be those here who were hearing this for

  280. the first time who've never thought about Isaiah

  281. 52 and 50. But think about it, who else could

  282. Isaiah possibly be talking about? Who else in

  283. all of history could be afflicted with wounds

  284. and we get healing from it? Who else in all of

  285. history could be numbered with the transgressors

  286. and yet bear the sins of many to make intercession?

  287. Who else, I ask? Well, just in case you're still

  288. unsure. I'll land the plane with Acts chapter

    Acts 8 chapter mention

  289. 8. You might remember this episode, the Ethiopian

  290. eunuch and Philip. And the eunuch is traveling

  291. and he's reading something. And no, it's not

  292. the newspaper. He's reading Isaiah 53. And the

  293. eunuch, 834, the eunuch said to Philip, about

  294. whom I ask you does the prophet say this about

  295. himself or about someone else then Philip opened

  296. his mouth and beginning with this scripture he

  297. told him the good news about Jesus and so friends

  298. it's not just that this is about Jesus it's that

  299. it must be about Jesus because he's the only

  300. one who stripes could bring healing. To put it

  301. in another way, in a way that I think will stick

  302. with you for the rest of the night, what can

  303. wash away my sins? Nothing but the blood of Jesus.
