  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. The enthusiasm of Bob Dylan in that song about the salvation we have in the blood of Jesus

  4. is shared by the Apostle Paul in our passage this morning.

  5. Last week we started a study in the book of Ephesians,

  6. and just as soon as Paul has said hello, he launches into a hymn of praise to God.

  7. He writes for 12 verses.

  8. In the Greek it's all in one sentence.

  9. One big, long sentence.

  10. In English we break it up a little bit for readability,

  11. but I hope as I read it this morning you'll still hear Paul gushing with joy and excitement

  12. as I read Ephesians 1 verses 3 to 14.

    Ephesians 1:3–14

  13. Ephesians 1 at verse 3.

  14. This is God's holy word.

  15. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  16. who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,

  17. even as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world,

  18. that we should be holy and blameless before Him.

  19. In love He predestined us for adoption through Jesus Christ,

  20. according to the purpose of His will,

  21. to the praise of His glorious grace with which He has blessed us in the Beloved.

  22. In Him we have redemption through His blood,

  23. the forgiveness of our trespasses according to the riches of His grace,

  24. which He lavished upon us in all wisdom and insight,

  25. making known to us the mystery of His will,

  26. according to His purpose which He set forth in Christ,

  27. as a plan for the fullness of time to unite all things in Him,

  28. things in heaven and things on earth.

  29. In Him we have obtained an inheritance,

  30. having been predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things,

  31. according to the counsel of His will,

  32. so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of His glory.

  33. In Him you also, when you heard the word of truth,

  34. the gospel of your salvation,

  35. and believed in Him,

  36. were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit,

  37. who is the guarantee of our inheritance

  38. until we acquire possession of it to the praise of His glory.

  39. The grass withers,

  40. the flowers fade,

  41. but these words of our God will indeed stand forever.

  42. Join me now as we pray and ask Him to teach us.

  43. Indeed, Father,

  44. blessed be Your name.

  45. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  46. who has blessed us so richly in every way.

  47. What an amazing passage.

  48. What a great chance to remember together and rejoice in what You've done.

  49. Father, You know that our hearts can't even contain it.

  50. That our minds are too weak to understand.

  51. That my words are too feeble to even describe what it is that You've done.

  52. And so, Father, I pray that You would speak.

  53. Holy Spirit, would You open our eyes and our hearts to see wonderful things

  54. in this, Your Word.

  55. Please, please teach us and change us.

  56. We ask in Jesus' name.

  57. Amen.

  58. While I was in seminary,

  59. my wife worked at Washington University in St. Louis.

  60. One of the things she did was plan events,

  61. and she helped organize one time a very large dinner

  62. to honor distinguished alumni of the university.

  63. It was a big night.

  64. A thousand people were going to be in attendance.

  65. Rudy Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City,

  66. was the keynote speaker.

  67. And all these distinguished alumni were coming back

  68. to be honored by the university.

  69. Now, Christy had offered to work the event,

  70. which meant that she could be at the ticket table out front.

  71. She might get a plate if they had some left over,

  72. or she might not get to eat at all.

  73. But for sure, what that meant with Christy at the event for the evening

  74. was that I was in a really bad spot.

  75. I was home on the couch with probably frozen pizza

  76. as my best bet for the evening.

  77. This was a huge, huge deal,

  78. and we had no right to be at the dinner.

  79. Then we got our big break.

  80. We found out that one of the distinguished alumni honorees

  81. was Jim Barker, the president of Clemson University.

  82. Christy and I had just come from Clemson

  83. and knew the Barkers a little bit while we were there,

  84. so I found that out,

  85. and I emailed Mrs. Barker and said,

  86. Christy will be there that evening.

  87. She would love to be able to say hey to you.

  88. If y'all can look for her at the ticket table,

  89. you'll probably see her on your way in.

  90. And thought nothing else of it.

  91. And two days later,

  92. the lady in charge of the event came to Christy

  93. and said,

  94. I got a call from Mrs. Barker today.

  95. They'd like for you and Will to be their guests at the dinner.

  96. They'd like for you to sit with them.

  97. All of the sudden,

  98. we went from on the couch with frozen pizza

  99. and at the ticket table to table number two,

  100. right up front for the whole night.

  101. My name tag that night read Will Spink,

  102. but it was only as guest of Jim Barker

  103. that I could be seated at that dinner.

  104. In fact, the people at my table figured that out quickly.

  105. They were,

  106. why are you here?

  107. You know, let's see.

  108. You're Will Spink.

  109. Now, who is that?

  110. Oh, guest of Jim Barker.

  111. Oh, right, right.

  112. So all night, that's what I went through.

  113. Oh, you're just with him.

  114. Yes, we're with him.

  115. President Barker had earned the honors

  116. that he was receiving that night,

  117. the chance to be at that dinner.

  118. And only as I was connected to him,

  119. could I enjoy the food,

  120. the company,

  121. the other wonderful parts of that evening.

  122. That's exactly what the Apostle Paul

  123. is about to talk about

  124. as he details every spiritual blessing

  125. we have in Christ

  126. because of our connection to Jesus.

  127. And it's so important for us to see this this morning

  128. because it's easy to focus on ourselves

  129. and to feel like frozen pizza Christians,

  130. for lack of a better word.

  131. You've felt this way before.

  132. Like, you know, you're a Christian,

  133. maybe, I hope,

  134. but only worthy of eating frozen pizza on the couch,

  135. not steak at table number two.

  136. Compared to others around you,

  137. you feel on the outside,

  138. insecure,

  139. maybe not sure you really belong,

  140. a second-class Christian,

  141. if you even are one at all.

  142. I mean, think about it.

  143. You haven't really done enough

  144. or been good enough.

  145. The people around you

  146. don't seem to be converted to Jesus all the time.

  147. There's that huge moral failure you've done again.

  148. And then last night,

  149. you lost your temper with your family again.

  150. Certainly, of all people,

  151. you're not really, really in.

  152. Someone else knows more.

  153. Someone else has done better.

  154. And so we don't think

  155. we'll get God's love and attention.

  156. He's probably not interested in us,

  157. only the really spiritual people.

  158. They'll sit with Him.

  159. We'll eat frozen pizza on the couch.

  160. You felt that before?

  161. The Ephesians may have felt that way.

  162. They may have had similar struggles.

  163. Here they are in the midst of this city

  164. that is rampant with immorality

  165. and the worship of other gods.

  166. And here's this little fledgling church.

  167. The city of Ephesus is not repenting

  168. and turning to Jesus immediately.

  169. Maybe they really were a second-class church.

  170. Lots of new young Christians,

  171. you know, many of them Gentiles.

  172. They really didn't,

  173. they weren't steeped in how to do church.

  174. Probably they didn't do things well.

  175. Maybe numerical growth

  176. wasn't what they'd hoped it would be.

  177. Was God really caring for them?

  178. Could they really count on Him

  179. to continue to do that

  180. in the midst of a city like this?

  181. Would He really care about people

  182. in a place that disdained Him?

  183. Maybe some of them or all of them

  184. felt like frozen pizza Christians.

  185. And so Paul begins his letter

  186. by saying to them and to us

  187. that Christianity and your story in it

  188. is not about what you do for God.

  189. It's about what God has done for you.

  190. He says that the blessings you have from God

  191. are not ribbons you've earned

  192. for your own performance.

  193. It is every spiritual blessing

  194. coming in Christ.

  195. You're blessed over and over and over

  196. because you're connected to Him.

  197. Listen, our access to God

  198. is based on what God has done for us,

  199. not what we do for God.

  200. Let me repeat that.

  201. Our access to God,

  202. our relationship with Him,

  203. the interaction and engagement we have,

  204. the blessings we receive from Him

  205. are based not on what we do for God,

  206. but on what He has done for us.

  207. That's the good news of this passage.

  208. Life is not all about you.

  209. It's all about Him and His glory.

  210. So what has God done?

  211. What is it that He's done for you?

  212. How has He blessed us in Christ?

  213. This passage is so rich,

  214. we could sit here and marvel at it all day.

  215. Some of you think I'm about to.

  216. But let's look at it in three parts

  217. for just a few minutes.

  218. The first part,

  219. the Father's plan.

  220. An anchor in eternity past.

  221. Look at verses 3 through 6 of this passage.

  222. Blessed be the God and Father

  223. of our Lord Jesus Christ,

  224. who's blessed us in Christ

  225. with every spiritual blessing

  226. in the heavenly places,

  227. praising Him.

  228. What is it that He's done?

  229. Even as He chose us in Him

  230. before the foundation of the world,

  231. that word chose

  232. is the word in the Greek

  233. from which we get the word elect.

  234. He chose us.

  235. He picked you.

  236. He wanted you.

  237. He moved towards you.

  238. He intentionally did something.

  239. In love,

  240. He predestined us.

  241. He's up to something.

  242. Before you were even

  243. a twinkle in your mother's eye,

  244. before the foundation of the world,

  245. God is setting His love upon you

  246. and He's got a plan for it.

  247. For what?

  248. To what end?

  249. What's His plan?

  250. Why was He choosing you?

  251. Two things at least here.

  252. Look in verse 4.

  253. The perfect record.

  254. He chose us that we should be what?

  255. Verse 4.

  256. Holy and blameless before Him.

  257. Not a passing grade.

  258. Not merely tolerable to God,

  259. but holy and blameless.

  260. Perfect.

  261. A perfect righteousness

  262. that of course is not coming from us,

  263. but from Jesus.

  264. Perfect righteousness.

  265. What else did He plan for us?

  266. Verse 5.

  267. He plans for a new family.

  268. He predestines us for adoption

  269. through Jesus Christ.

  270. He wants us to be a part of His family.

  271. Don't miss this.

  272. Do you hear what He's doing?

  273. He's decided He wants you in His family.

  274. You're welcome in.

  275. You belong.

  276. That was His plan all along.

  277. You're not just invited, you see,

  278. to come off the sofa

  279. and to bring your frozen pizza

  280. into the banquet hall

  281. and wander around the back

  282. and watch and peer.

  283. And I wonder about all those people

  284. enjoying the wonderful meals up front.

  285. You're invited to come

  286. to the Father's table

  287. because you're connected to His Son

  288. and have actually become a son.

  289. He's brought you into His family.

  290. What a great comfort and security that is.

  291. The God of the universe,

  292. before you even existed,

  293. intentionally purposes in His will,

  294. plans for you to have a perfect record

  295. and a new family.

  296. His family.

  297. He plans for you.

  298. Listen, if that's His plan,

  299. you can count on it.

  300. He's God.

  301. He's in charge.

  302. He's loved you since before

  303. the foundation of the world.

  304. That's an anchor that will hold

  305. that you can count on.

  306. And then verse 6 reminds us

  307. all this good stuff that He's doing

  308. is He's doing it for us.

  309. It's actually to the praise

  310. of His glorious grace.

  311. Not to our credit, right?

  312. Predestination, for example,

  313. is a source of glory to God

  314. and comfort for God's people.

  315. Not a topic for debate and controversy.

  316. That's what it's become for some of us.

  317. Listen, God says,

  318. this is all about the praise

  319. of my glorious grace

  320. and how wonderful I've been to you.

  321. How much I love you.

  322. How magnanimous I am

  323. and how comforted and secure

  324. you can be

  325. because of who I am.

  326. You can be confident in His love.

  327. Secondly,

  328. we have the Son's sacrifice.

  329. The cross

  330. in human history.

  331. Before the foundation of the world,

  332. God makes a plan

  333. and the Father having made this plan for us,

  334. someone's going to have to execute it.

  335. Someone's going to have to make this happen

  336. and the Son volunteers.

  337. I'll go.

  338. Listen, we're not talking about

  339. a distant deity

  340. who's fatalistically and whimsically

  341. just ordering all the events

  342. of human history.

  343. That's not the picture we have of God

  344. before the foundation of the world,

  345. is it?

  346. When God chooses to save,

  347. it costs Him His Son.

  348. It costs Jesus His very life.

  349. That's why this redemption is costly.

  350. It's a costly redemption that we have.

  351. Verse 7,

  352. how is it described?

  353. In Him we have redemption

  354. through His blood.

  355. The very blood of Jesus,

  356. the perfect Son of God,

  357. is the purchase price.

  358. Redemption refers to

  359. buying something back.

  360. Like purchasing someone's freedom

  361. out of slavery.

  362. Buying it back.

  363. And when God plans for us

  364. to be in His family,

  365. He had to buy us back

  366. at the cost of the perfect Lamb.

  367. Not with perishable things

  368. like silver or gold

  369. that we were redeemed,

  370. but with the precious blood

  371. of Jesus Christ.

  372. That's what happens on the cross.

  373. The Father who loves you

  374. and wants you in His family

  375. says,

  376. I've got to purchase you

  377. and it costs my Son His life.

  378. As a result of that,

  379. we receive what?

  380. Full forgiveness.

  381. Another spiritual blessing.

  382. There's starting to be

  383. a laundry list here.

  384. Full forgiveness.

  385. Look at verse 7.

  386. We have redemption

  387. through His blood,

  388. the forgiveness

  389. of our trespasses.

  390. And this means that

  391. our slate that's dirty

  392. and that's smudged

  393. is wiped clean.

  394. Our sin and guilt

  395. wiped away completely.

  396. Not just some of our sins,

  397. but notice full forgiveness.

  398. Keep reading.

  399. On what basis are we forgiven?

  400. To what extent?

  401. According to the riches

  402. of His grace

  403. which He has lavished upon us.

  404. Riches lavished upon you.

  405. Do you know what that feels like?

  406. I like to eat,

  407. so I pictured Christmas

  408. at Grandma's house.

  409. We were just there recently

  410. and here's what it went like for us.

  411. My girls would go to get dessert.

  412. They'd find the cookies

  413. in the cookie jar

  414. and they'd eat a couple

  415. or three

  416. and they'd run out

  417. and they'd say,

  418. there's no more cookies left.

  419. And we'd say,

  420. perfect.

  421. You know, we're through.

  422. And Grandma says,

  423. oh no,

  424. oh there's plenty more

  425. in the back room.

  426. Let me go get you

  427. some more cookies.

  428. And we're like,

  429. oh, Grandma,

  430. two or three cookies

  431. was enough.

  432. And they get some more

  433. and so, you know,

  434. an hour or so later

  435. you're sitting there

  436. watching the television

  437. and your kids come out

  438. with a bowl of ice cream.

  439. Grandma, ice cream?

  440. I thought we'd run out of that.

  441. We emptied that carton last night.

  442. I had two more cartons

  443. in the freezer

  444. outside in the garage.

  445. We got some more out.

  446. They're having ice cream.

  447. It runs out

  448. but there's always more.

  449. You never run out.

  450. Always more.

  451. Always given generously

  452. until you're completely full.

  453. That's lavish, right?

  454. That's what it looks like

  455. to have riches

  456. lavished upon you.

  457. That's what Christmas

  458. should be like

  459. especially for kids

  460. who can still eat that much.

  461. Have you had the riches

  462. of God's grace

  463. lavished upon you?

  464. Poured on you

  465. to overflowing

  466. over all your sins?

  467. The worst things you've done?

  468. The biggest failures

  469. to perform

  470. where you left things undone?

  471. The things you've never

  472. told anyone else about?

  473. The thoughts in your heart

  474. you're embarrassed

  475. you've ever had?

  476. Hasn't He lavished

  477. forgiveness on us?

  478. Hasn't He done that?

  479. What a great blessing that is.

  480. Full, full forgiveness.

  481. A great gift.

  482. So the Son accomplishes

  483. the Father's ancient plan

  484. in real space

  485. and time of human history.

  486. But does it get to us?

  487. The cross still seems

  488. like a while ago.

  489. Is it going to actually

  490. get to us?

  491. Is it going to be ours?

  492. There's all these blessings

  493. and the Holy Spirit

  494. makes sure of that.

  495. Finally, in this passage

  496. we read of the Spirit's seal.

  497. A stake in eternity future.

  498. The last part of this passage.

  499. Notice especially verse 13.

  500. When we heard and believed,

  501. we were sealed

  502. with the promised Holy Spirit.

  503. Now before we talk about

  504. what the Holy Spirit does for us,

  505. can we just notice for a second?

  506. All three parts of the Godhead

  507. working together.

  508. God working in concert.

  509. All three with unique roles.

  510. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

  511. The Father planning to love and save.

  512. The Son taking on flesh

  513. to sacrifice and redeem.

  514. And now we have the Spirit

  515. applying that purchased salvation

  516. to those whom the Father

  517. has chosen

  518. and for whom the Son

  519. has died.

  520. Because the word Trinity

  521. is not actually in the Bible,

  522. people sometimes suggest

  523. that the Bible doesn't teach

  524. about a triune God.

  525. It's been suggested again recently.

  526. That maybe Jesus

  527. isn't really divine.

  528. That these are things

  529. we're making up.

  530. This is a great example

  531. of the Bible teaching

  532. about the Trinity.

  533. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit

  534. working together.

  535. They've come together

  536. on this project.

  537. What's the big project

  538. they're partnering on?

  539. All three of them

  540. working together.

  541. To what end?

  542. It's securing our adoption

  543. and our eternal salvation.

  544. That's what they're up to,

  545. isn't it?

  546. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit

  547. together.

  548. And so the Holy Spirit

  549. comes and guarantees

  550. that we have a certain

  551. inheritance.

  552. That's what it looks like

  553. for Him to be a seal.

  554. Look at verse 11.

  555. God hasn't just adopted you

  556. with the possibility

  557. of taking it back.

  558. In Him we've obtained

  559. an inheritance

  560. having been predestined

  561. according to the purpose

  562. of Him who works all things

  563. according to the counsel

  564. of His will.

  565. You want to know

  566. what's going to happen?

  567. When this guy decides

  568. it happens,

  569. he works all things

  570. according to the counsel

  571. of His will.

  572. This plan is not tentative

  573. or tenuous.

  574. He's written you in permanently

  575. with the riches

  576. of His kingdom

  577. belonging to you.

  578. He's engraved you

  579. on the palm of His hand.

  580. He's not changing His mind.

  581. The Holy Spirit

  582. is the one who seals,

  583. validates,

  584. authenticates

  585. that we are indeed His.

  586. The heir of the cattle

  587. on a thousand hills.

  588. We have a stake

  589. in eternity future.

  590. Something that we can count on.

  591. And then there's

  592. eternal security.

  593. The Spirit is described again

  594. in verse 14

  595. as a guarantee.

  596. The Holy Spirit

  597. who is the guarantee

  598. of our inheritance.

  599. When you hear guarantee,

  600. think of the down payment,

  601. the deposit,

  602. the promise of eternity

  603. because we have

  604. the Holy Spirit

  605. in us now.

  606. So this is not

  607. social security

  608. which may be there

  609. in 30 or 40

  610. or 50 years

  611. but may not.

  612. This is eternal security.

  613. an inheritance

  614. that cannot perish

  615. or spoil or fade

  616. because the Holy Spirit

  617. lives in us

  618. and assures us

  619. that we'll obtain

  620. the inheritance

  621. until the day

  622. He claims us as His own

  623. and we receive

  624. the fullness

  625. of the coming kingdom.

  626. Everything that God

  627. has for us.

  628. It's also interesting

  629. in these verses

  630. if you look

  631. in this last section

  632. Paul actually

  633. changes some pronouns.

  634. What does he mean

  635. when in verse 11

  636. he says,

  637. in him we.

  638. We, he's talking

  639. about us Jews.

  640. Paul was a Jew.

  641. In him we've obtained

  642. an inheritance.

  643. Look at verse 13.

  644. In him you also,

  645. you Gentiles,

  646. you also when you heard

  647. and believed,

  648. received the Holy Spirit.

  649. So you get to verse 14

  650. and whose inheritance is it?

  651. Ours.

  652. The Jews and the Gentiles.

  653. We and you.

  654. Our inheritance.

  655. Whatever your background.

  656. Regardless of your

  657. religious pedigree

  658. or your performance.

  659. God has secured eternity.

  660. He's the one who's done it.

  661. So just take a look back

  662. at your story for a minute.

  663. What is it that

  664. establishes your access with God?

  665. What's the currency

  666. of your relationship

  667. with God today?

  668. What is it that determines

  669. whether you're on the couch

  670. with frozen pizza

  671. or at table number two?

  672. What is it?

  673. There's an anchor

  674. in eternity past

  675. all the way back

  676. before the world existed,

  677. before you existed,

  678. that the Father loves you

  679. and has a plan

  680. before you existed.

  681. That there's a cross

  682. in human history,

  683. time and space,

  684. where Jesus comes

  685. and purchases you.

  686. This is actually the one place

  687. you might have showed up.

  688. That's the place

  689. we should have been, right?

  690. And Jesus alone

  691. on the cross

  692. in our place

  693. purchases our redemption.

  694. And then in eternity future,

  695. already,

  696. God's gone ahead of us.

  697. The Holy Spirit there

  698. knocking a stake in,

  699. sealing us

  700. and saying,

  701. I'm preparing for you

  702. a seat at a feast

  703. that you've not arrived at yet,

  704. but I've got it

  705. in place for you.

  706. Just notice two things

  707. about this.

  708. First of all,

  709. what we said earlier,

  710. the Godhead working together,

  711. Father, Son,

  712. and Holy Spirit,

  713. all three of them

  714. working for you.

  715. And secondly,

  716. the fact that you're not there.

  717. You weren't there

  718. before the foundation

  719. of the world.

  720. You weren't there

  721. on the cross.

  722. You're not there

  723. in eternity future yet.

  724. If you feel second class,

  725. held at arm's length

  726. from God,

  727. then you're reading

  728. the wrong story.

  729. You're reading the one

  730. about yourself

  731. and about how you're doing

  732. and what things look like

  733. around you.

  734. Hear the old,

  735. old story again.

  736. All three persons

  737. of the Godhead

  738. doing this for you.

  739. He's just that good.

  740. His grace really is

  741. that amazing.

  742. That's your story.

  743. Two points of application

  744. for us this morning

  745. based off of phrases

  746. that are repeated

  747. in this passage.

  748. First,

  749. in light of

  750. all of this that's true,

  751. all these blessings

  752. God has for us,

  753. so what?

  754. Well,

  755. we have a new focus.

  756. When Paul talks about

  757. the process of our salvation,

  758. who's the focus on?

  759. You've probably picked up

  760. on this as we've read

  761. several times.

  762. Who's it all about?

  763. It's about God

  764. and His glory and praise.

  765. It started in verse 3.

  766. Blessed be,

  767. not you and me,

  768. blessed be the God

  769. and Father of our Lord

  770. Jesus Christ.

  771. It's going to be about Him.

  772. Verse 6 says,

  773. to the praise

  774. of His glorious grace.

  775. Verse 12,

  776. we actually exist

  777. to the praise

  778. of His glory.

  779. Verse 14,

  780. the whole passage

  781. closes to the praise

  782. of His glory.

  783. From beginning to end,

  784. it's about His glory.

  785. And that's our chief end,

  786. right?

  787. The glory of God.

  788. Our lives

  789. are about His glory,

  790. not our own.

  791. Not about winning

  792. the game of life.

  793. It's about God's glory,

  794. even before it's about

  795. these wonderful things

  796. like our security

  797. and comfort.

  798. How can that be?

  799. That doesn't seem

  800. to make sense.

  801. When I first think about it,

  802. how can it all be about God,

  803. actually be a benefit to me?

  804. Here's how that works.

  805. When it's about His glory,

  806. when God is made great,

  807. we're not made irrelevant.

  808. It leads to our comfort

  809. and security

  810. because our salvation

  811. starts and ends

  812. with Him

  813. and His work.

  814. So if it wasn't ours to earn,

  815. it's not ours to lose either.

  816. When He gets the glory,

  817. when His grace is magnified,

  818. when God becomes big

  819. and strong

  820. and powerful,

  821. we then revel securely

  822. in a God who loves us,

  823. who's purchased us

  824. and will never let us go.

  825. When the one who's holding you

  826. is strong

  827. and loves you,

  828. you're safe, right?

  829. If the person holding you

  830. is strong

  831. and loves you,

  832. you're safe.

  833. It's all about His glory

  834. and that's good for us

  835. because He loves us.

  836. The problem is

  837. we're so obsessed

  838. with ourselves.

  839. We can't stop focusing

  840. on ourselves,

  841. what we look like,

  842. how we perform,

  843. what our reputation is,

  844. how comfortable we are.

  845. We'll even ask God

  846. to serve those things,

  847. won't we?

  848. To make us more comfortable,

  849. to help us look better.

  850. And the irony is

  851. when we focus on ourselves,

  852. things actually turn out

  853. worse for us

  854. because we miss

  855. all these blessings of God

  856. because they're found

  857. in Christ,

  858. not in self.

  859. we miss out

  860. when we do well

  861. and when we do bad.

  862. Just think about

  863. some of the places

  864. we look for these blessings.

  865. Where do we often

  866. look for security?

  867. In money?

  868. Even when we do

  869. really well,

  870. what happens when

  871. we get a lot of money?

  872. Things could change.

  873. You don't know

  874. how long it'll last.

  875. I mean,

  876. the stock market

  877. could change.

  878. There's some security there

  879. but I better get

  880. a little bit more.

  881. This is eternal security

  882. in Christ.

  883. It happens when we fail.

  884. What do we think

  885. when our relationship

  886. with God,

  887. when our adoption

  888. becomes based on our performance

  889. and we fail?

  890. And we start thinking

  891. maybe He doesn't love me.

  892. Maybe He won't hear my prayers.

  893. I've been such a failure.

  894. In both of those cases,

  895. our focus is on ourselves

  896. rather than on the glory of God

  897. and the riches of His grace.

  898. What would be different for you

  899. if your focus was reoriented

  900. from your glory to His?

  901. What would change?

  902. How you invest your money?

  903. Where you spend your time?

  904. What else would change?

  905. What would you start doing

  906. if that were true?

  907. What would you stop doing?

  908. Where could you trust

  909. and rest and relax

  910. where now you feel insecure

  911. and anxious?

  912. If it was really true

  913. that it wasn't about

  914. how many national championships

  915. you won

  916. and how successful you were

  917. but that He has won

  918. and that He's chosen you

  919. to be on His team.

  920. If His reputation

  921. really mattered more than yours.

  922. If His glory was really

  923. more important

  924. than your comfort.

  925. Wouldn't our lives look different?

  926. If we really believed that

  927. and took that seriously?

  928. It's about Him.

  929. Secondly, we have

  930. a new name tag.

  931. At least ten times

  932. in this passage

  933. the phrase

  934. in Christ

  935. or something similar

  936. in Him

  937. through Jesus Christ

  938. appears over and over.

  939. In twelve verses

  940. for a phrase like that

  941. to be repeated

  942. ten plus times

  943. is really

  944. something stark

  945. that we ought to notice.

  946. Our connection to Jesus

  947. our union with Him

  948. is highlighted

  949. because it's the basis

  950. for all of these blessings, right?

  951. None of the rest

  952. of this glorious passage

  953. happens without that.

  954. And so for us

  955. the vital question is

  956. do you know Him?

  957. Do you know Him?

  958. What do I mean

  959. when I ask a question

  960. like that?

  961. Do you know Him?

  962. It's an issue

  963. of our defining identity

  964. of our connection

  965. of what's on our name tag.

  966. Under your name

  967. does it read

  968. in Christ?

  969. Does it read

  970. guest of Jesus?

  971. The question is not asking

  972. do you know about Him?

  973. Have you heard about Him

  974. from a distance

  975. or studied about Him

  976. up close?

  977. It's do you know Him?

  978. Are you in Him?

  979. Have you in desperation

  980. claimed His record

  981. as your own

  982. and trusted Him

  983. as your only hope?

  984. I'm not asking

  985. do you go to church

  986. more than your co-workers?

  987. Do you pray

  988. more than your family members?

  989. Do you know more theology

  990. than your friends?

  991. That's not the question.

  992. This passage is asking

  993. are you in Christ?

  994. If so

  995. all the blessings of God

  996. are yours.

  997. One more picture of this

  998. from a guy

  999. who is even worse off

  1000. than I was

  1001. with frozen pizza

  1002. on the couch.

  1003. His name is Mephibosheth.

  1004. Try saying that

  1005. even once.

  1006. Mephibosheth.

  1007. His story is in

  1008. 2 Samuel 9.

  1009. King Saul

  1010. and his son

  1011. Jonathan

  1012. have died.

  1013. David has become

  1014. king of Israel.

  1015. Jonathan had been

  1016. David's best friend.

  1017. Had earned

  1018. David's affection.

  1019. And so David asks

  1020. is there anyone

  1021. left of Saul's house

1022. to whom I can show

  1023. kindness

  1024. for Jonathan's sake?

  1025. He loves Jonathan

  1026. so much

  1027. he wants to

  1028. show kindness

  1029. to someone

  1030. for Jonathan's sake.

  1031. and he's told

  1032. there's one

  1033. but he's crippled

  1034. in both feet.

  1035. He's not worthy

  1036. to even

  1037. come in the palace.

  1038. Perhaps

  1039. he's a threat

  1040. to David's power

1041. as an heir of Saul

  1042. still alive.

  1043. Listen to what happens

  1044. in 2 Samuel 9.

  1045. Mephibosheth

  1046. does come

  1047. to King David

  1048. and David says

  1049. to him

  1050. do not fear

  1051. for I will show

  1052. you kindness

  1053. for the sake

  1054. of your father

  1055. Jonathan

  1056. and I will restore

1057. to you all the land

  1058. of Saul your father

  1059. and you shall eat

  1060. at my table

  1061. always.

  1062. And Mephibosheth

  1063. bows down

  1064. to David

  1065. and says

  1066. what's your servant

  1067. that you should

  1068. show regard

  1069. for a dead dog

  1070. such as I?

  1071. And the king

  1072. called Ziba

  1073. Saul's servant

  1074. and said to him

  1075. all that belong

  1076. to Saul

1077. and to all his house

  1078. I've given

  1079. to your master's

  1080. grandson.

  1081. son.

  1082. And so Mephibosheth

  1083. ate at David's table

1084. like one of the king's sons.

  1085. So Mephibosheth

  1086. lived in Jerusalem

  1087. for he ate always

  1088. at the king's table.

  1089. Now he was lame

  1090. in both feet.

  1091. Lame in both feet.

  1092. A self-described

  1093. dead dog.

  1094. But Mephibosheth

  1095. was connected

  1096. to Jonathan

  1097. wasn't he?

  1098. And because of

  1099. Jonathan's merit

  1100. Mephibosheth

  1101. always ate

  1102. at the king's table.

  1103. If they wore

  1104. name tags back then

  1105. I am certain

1106. that his would have read

  1107. son of Jonathan.

  1108. Mephibosheth

  1109. son of Jonathan.

  1110. Southwood

  1111. Jesus has done

  1112. immeasurably

  1113. more

  1114. than President Barker

  1115. for me

  1116. or Jonathan

  1117. for Mephibosheth.

  1118. President Barker

  1119. earned me a seat

  1120. at an honored table

  1121. for one night.

  1122. Jonathan earned

  1123. for Mephibosheth

  1124. a seat

  1125. at the king

  1126. of Israel's table

  1127. for the rest

  1128. of his life.

  1129. Jesus

  1130. has earned

  1131. for us

  1132. for those

  1133. who are united

  1134. to him

  1135. a seat

  1136. at the king

  1137. of kings table

  1138. for the rest

  1139. of your life

  1140. and for

  1141. all of eternity.

  1142. He's done

  1143. that for you.

  1144. Does your name tag

  1145. read

  1146. guest

  1147. of Jesus?

  1148. That's the only way

  1149. to receive

  1150. every spiritual blessing

  1151. to have

  1152. a perfect record

  1153. a new family

  1154. costly redemption

  1155. full forgiveness

  1156. a certain inheritance

  1157. eternal security

  1158. and

  1159. and so much more

  1160. that's just

  1161. in this one chapter.

  1162. If you're in Christ

  1163. you've done nothing

  1164. to earn

  1165. your seat

  1166. at the table.

  1167. God chose

  1168. the you

  1169. that is in Christ

  1170. before the foundation

  1171. of the world

  1172. before you

  1173. did any better

  1174. or tried any harder

  1175. rejoice

  1176. he loves you.

  1177. If you're not

  1178. in Christ

  1179. you can do nothing

  1180. to earn your seat

  1181. at the table.

  1182. There's nothing

  1183. you can do.

  1184. Believe in him.

  1185. Cling to him.

  1186. Ask for his record

  1187. instead of yours.

  1188. dead dogs

  1189. second class

  1190. believers

  1191. repeated failures

  1192. the good news

  1193. of the gospel

  1194. is that it's not

  1195. about you

  1196. it's all about him

  1197. and he loves you

  1198. and welcomes you

  1199. to this table

  1200. in Christ

  1201. to this table

  1202. that he set

  1203. before you

  1204. and he welcomes you

  1205. in Christ.

  1206. I want you

  1207. to hear

  1208. the words

  1209. of institution

  1210. of this table

  1211. from 1 Corinthians 11

  1212. Paul says

  1213. I received

  1214. from the Lord

  1215. what I also

  1216. delivered to you

  1217. that the Lord

  1218. Jesus on the night

  1219. when he was

  1220. betrayed

  1221. took bread

  1222. and when he

  1223. had given

  1224. thanks

  1225. he broke it

  1226. and said

  1227. this is my body

  1228. which is for you

  1229. do this

  1230. in remembrance

  1231. of me

  1232. and in the same

  1233. way also

  1234. he took the cup

  1235. after supper

  1236. saying

  1237. this cup

  1238. is the new

  1239. covenant

  1240. in my blood

  1241. do this

  1242. as often

  1243. as you drink

  1244. it

  1245. in remembrance

  1246. of me

  1247. for as often

  1248. as you eat

  1249. this bread

  1250. and drink

  1251. the cup

  1252. you proclaim

  1253. the Lord's

  1254. death

  1255. until he

  1256. comes

  1257. y'all

  1258. this is

  1259. the Lord's

  1260. table

  1261. it's not

  1262. a Southwood

  1263. table

  1264. or Presbyterian

  1265. table

  1266. if it was

  1267. a Southwood

  1268. table

  1269. you might

  1270. qualify

  1271. I might

  1272. have a chance

  1273. but it's

  1274. not

  1275. it's the

  1276. table

  1277. of the

  1278. holy

  1279. glorious

  1280. perfect

  1281. king

  1282. of kings

  1283. and

  1284. Will Spink

  1285. on his

  1286. own

  1287. has no

  1288. chance

  1289. to be

  1290. at this

  1291. table

  1292. with the

  1293. imperfections

  1294. on my

  1295. record

  1296. and yours

  1297. no chance

  1298. but the

  1299. guest of

  1300. Jesus

  1301. is guaranteed

  1302. a seat

  1303. here

  1304. always

  1305. always

  1306. because of

  1307. his

  1308. perfect

  1309. record

  1310. if you've

  1311. despaired

  1312. of your

  1313. own

  1314. credentials

  1315. and trusted

  1316. in his

  1317. come

  1318. come

  1319. and eat

  1320. dead

  1321. dog

  1322. crippled

  1323. in both

  1324. feet

  1325. your new

  1326. name tag

  1327. says

  1328. in

  1329. Christ

  1330. you

  1331. always

  1332. eat

  1333. at the

  1334. king's

  1335. table

  1336. and if

  1337. you're

  1338. not

  1339. in

  1340. Christ

  1341. if you

  1342. don't

  1343. know

  1344. him

  1345. I'd

  1346. encourage

  1347. you

  1348. not

  1349. to

  1350. come

  1351. to

  1352. this

  1353. table

  1354. but

  1355. I'd

  1356. encourage

  1357. you

  1358. this

  1359. morning

  1360. imagine

  1361. what

  1362. if

  1363. your

  1364. record

  1365. and

  1366. the

  1367. imperfections

  1368. you're

  1369. aware

  1370. of

  1371. and

  1372. the

  1373. things

  1374. you

  1375. regret

  1376. and

  1377. wish

  1378. hadn't

  1379. been

  1380. a

  1381. part

  1382. of

  1383. your

  1384. story

  1385. what

  1386. if

  1387. all

  1388. of

  1389. that

  1390. could

  1391. be

  1392. wiped

  1393. away

  1394. your

  1395. imperfect

  1396. record

  1397. gone

  1398. and

  1399. you'd

  1400. be

  1401. handed

  1402. a

  1403. perfect

  1404. record

  1405. that

  1406. doesn't

  1407. take

  1408. months

  1409. of

  1410. rehab

  1411. and

  1412. trying

  1413. to

  1414. earn

  1415. things

  1416. better

  1417. trying

  1418. to

  1419. clean

  1420. it

  1421. up

  1422. and

  1423. build

  1424. your

  1425. resume

  1426. he

  1427. does

  1428. it

  1429. all

  1430. for

  1431. you

  1432. he

  1433. can

  1434. do

  1435. it

  1436. right

  1437. now

  1438. in

  1439. this

  1440. moment

  1441. you

  1442. can

  1443. ask

  1444. him

  1445. he

  1446. can

  1447. scribble

  1448. guest

  1449. of

  1450. Jesus

  1451. on

  1452. your

  1453. name

  1455. in

  1456. this

  1457. moment

  1458. in

  1459. permanent

  1460. you

  1461. can

  1462. feast

  1463. with

  1464. him

  1465. forever

  1466. won't

  1467. you

  1468. trust

  1469. in

  1470. Jesus

  1471. pray

  1472. with

  1473. me

  1474. and

  1475. we'll

  1476. come

  1477. to

  1478. this

  1479. table

  1480. Jesus

  1481. thank

  1482. you

  1483. thank

  1484. you

  1485. all

  1486. the

  1487. blessings

  1488. that

  1489. we

  1494. you

  1495. your

  1503. a

  1504. great

  1505. precious

  1506. price

  1507. that

  1508. is

  1509. for
