  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. This is a special Sunday for us, a little bit unusual.

  5. A dozen or so of you have already commented on our suits.

  6. Thank you for telling us how nice we look.

  7. I know this is not exactly what you're used to every Sunday.

  8. Some of you have noticed already that there's not as much room for notes on the back of your

  9. bulletin for sermon notes.

  10. You're distressed.

  11. You usually have so much you want to write down and the sermon's going to be shorter today.

  12. We're even, you don't believe that, do you?

  13. It is.

  14. We're even leaving the book of Ephesians for a Sunday.

  15. We're in a series there and we're taking a break.

  16. This is a special Sunday in the life of our church where we get to ordain and install

  17. new officers and we're thrilled about that.

  18. But we're going to be in the book of Acts today.

  19. Acts chapter 20 at verse 28.

    Acts 20 chapter mention

  20. We haven't completely left Ephesus behind today.

  21. These are actually Paul's words, his parting words to the Ephesian elders, the elders of

  22. the church that we've been reading the letter to.

  23. He's telling them goodbye.

  24. This is a church he started, that he loves, and he's speaking to the whole church, particularly

  25. here to their elders.

  26. Listen to God's inerrant, infallible word.

  27. Acts 20 at verse 28.

  28. Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock in which the Holy Spirit has made

  29. you overseers to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his own blood.

  30. I know that after my departure, fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock.

  31. And from among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things to draw away the

  32. disciples after them.

  33. Therefore, be alert, remembering that for three years I did not cease night or day to admonish

  34. everyone with tears.

  35. Pray with me.

  36. Pray with me.

  37. Father, these are your words.

  38. We are your people.

  39. And we ask you that you would teach us this morning.

  40. Would these not just be words that we read and hear?

  41. Father, my words in themselves are simply the words that a man would speak.

  42. Would your spirit make them much more?

  43. Would he take your word and apply it to our hearts?

  44. That we might indeed be the kind of people that you mean for us to be?

  45. The kind of church that you have created us and called us to be?

  46. Father, that would be the desire of our hearts.

  47. Would you do that work by your spirit?

  48. We ask in Jesus' name.

  49. Amen.

  50. This weekend, of course, was Valentine's Day weekend.

  51. There are many cultural practices surrounding courtship and marriage.

  52. Some that are unique to our society.

  53. Some that are more commonly practiced around the world.

  54. One of those that I remember experiencing was the moment of asking her father.

  55. You may have had that moment, some of you guys.

  56. I remember going to Christy's hometown and taking her parents out for dinner one night

  57. with the express intent of having the conversation with them.

  58. I was very nervous.

  59. My palms were sweaty.

  60. I had a long speech prepared.

  61. I delivered that pretty shortly after we sat down.

  62. I wanted to tell them how much I loved their daughter.

  63. How precious and valuable and important she was to me.

  64. All of those things.

  65. And so I told them all of those wonderful things I had prepared in my speech.

  66. And I got to the end of it.

  67. And her father said, if you're asking for my daughter's hand.

  68. And I thought, that's exactly what I was thinking you were hearing for the last several minutes.

  69. And it wasn't the last time that I spoke too long and people got confused.

  70. That's happened a couple of times since then.

  71. Y'all are so mean.

  72. And he said, my answer would be yes, if that's what that just was.

  73. He had a few other questions and we talked for a while.

  74. But many other cultures have conversations that go somewhat similar to that.

  75. In some cultures, that conversation includes what's called a bride price.

  76. And I'm not going to necessarily commend some of the implications of this.

  77. But for a beautiful woman of high social standing with lots of education.

  78. In some countries, hundreds of thousands of dollars can be paid in that conversation in order to marry that bride.

  79. The groom shows how much he values her by the high price he's willing to pay in order to marry her.

  80. How precious.

  81. How valuable is the church to her groom.

  82. What is he willing to pay to live in relationship with her?

  83. Verse 28.

  84. The church of God which he obtained.

  85. How?

  86. With his own blood.

  87. A higher price has never been paid.

  88. His own blood in order to have his bride.

  89. Jesus said his people, his sheep, hear his voice.

  90. And they know him.

  91. That he lays down his life willingly for the sheep.

  92. He knew what it would take for them to be his.

  93. And he willingly paid it.

  94. Isn't that amazing?

  95. Willingly he paid it.

  96. How precious must we be to Jesus?

  97. Jesus.

  98. It was the price required, wasn't it?

  99. Because of our wanderings and our failures.

  100. Not his.

  101. The story of the Bible, Old Testament and New Testament, individually and corporately,

  102. is of an adulterous, unfaithful bride.

  103. One who wanders away.

  104. We had earned death.

  105. Chosen our own ways and our own paths.

  106. We had muddied ourselves on the filth of this world, hadn't we?

  107. But the story of the Bible is also one of an undeterred, absolutely always faithful groom.

  108. And so when the price required to bring us back, to make us clean, was someone's death.

  109. When it was said that blood had to be shed in order for sins to be forgiven and people to be cleansed.

  110. He was all in.

  111. He was willing to pay it.

  112. He would pay it.

  113. And the price wasn't, Peter tells us, silver or gold.

  114. It wasn't with perishable things like that.

  115. Material possessions like silver or gold.

  116. That we were redeemed from the way of life that we had wandered off in.

  117. It was the precious blood of Christ.

  118. A lamb without blemish or defect.

  119. The perfect son of God giving his life for us.

  120. Do you ever feel worthless?

  121. Overlooked?

  122. Neglected?

  123. Like someone couldn't possibly care for you?

  124. You really don't matter in the grand scheme of things.

  125. No one would really care if you were gone.

  126. Have others hurt you?

  127. Made you feel rejected?

  128. Ashamed?

  129. Unworthy of their love, attention, or effort?

  130. You need to remember the high price your God paid to have you as His own.

  131. To reclaim your heart.

  132. He didn't just do it impersonally.

  133. Your name, the Bible tells us, is written on the palm of His hand.

  134. He did it for you.

  135. I've told some of you when we're taking communion before,

  136. that if you were the only sinner in the whole world,

  137. it would require the blood of Jesus to pay your penalty.

  138. The other thing that's true is that if you were the only sinner in the whole world,

  139. Jesus would have paid that price willingly.

  140. Because He loves you that much.

  141. That's how much your Savior loves you.

  142. That's how precious you are to God.

  143. He loves you that much.

  144. He loves His church that He purchased with His own blood.

  145. The picture of Jesus that we need to see when we're feeling worthless and neglected and undesirable

  146. is the one that John saw in Revelation 5.

  147. We started our service with it as the call to worship.

  148. It's a lamb standing as if slain.

  149. He is the one who has purchased people from every tribe and tongue and people and nation

  150. to gather His bride together.

  151. And as you keep reading in Revelation about this lamb who was slain,

  152. there's all of a sudden before Him a great multitude.

  153. The bride of Christ that He's gathered together, no one can count them.

  154. It's His bride dressed in beautiful white robes.

  155. And how?

  156. How is it that Revelation tells us the church stands before her groom dressed in white robes?

  157. It's because they've washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the lamb.

  158. In His blood, He's washed them and made them clean.

  159. Dear Christian, you're His treasured possession.

  160. We are His treasured possession.

  161. A people for His own.

  162. The ones for whom the Father would send the Son.

  163. The ones for whom the Son would willingly lay down His life.

  164. He has not forgotten you.

  165. You're precious to Him.

  166. Imagine if at the point in your life where you felt most worthless and undesirable,

  167. someone scraped and sacrificed and gathered together enough money to give you a ring.

  168. To say, I want to spend the rest of my life with you.

  169. I want to enter into relationship with you.

  170. That kind of act would at least begin to rewrite the story of worthlessness

  171. that you've been telling yourself that's in your own heart, wouldn't it?

  172. It would begin to do that.

  173. Imagine if rather than a ring, if rather than someone sacrificing just some money,

  174. He sacrificed His life to save you and to live in relationship with you.

  175. That kind of love really does begin to rewrite our story,

  176. to give us a new narrative of who we are,

  177. a completely new identity because of who He is and what He's done for us.

  178. We have an identity as precious to Jesus.

  179. He has not forgotten us.

  180. We are precious to Him.

  181. There's a particular gravity for that this morning,

  182. especially for our new officers,

  183. of thinking of how precious the church is.

  184. I remember one of my seminary professors whom I love, Jack Collins.

  185. He used to warn us young, prideful, overconfident seminary guys

  186. of what we could do with God's Word and ways that we would hurt or abuse the flock.

  187. Ways that we would mislead people.

  188. Things we could do that would hurt them.

  189. And he would regularly get emotional and tearful

  190. and warn us not ever to do whatever it was in that moment that he was concerned about.

  191. And he would say,

  192. don't you ever do that to Jesus' precious blood-bought lambs.

  193. You're going to them.

  194. Don't you dare treat them that way.

  195. In a sense, the marvel of today

  196. is that Jesus would take such a precious bride whom He loves so much

  197. and place her hand in yours this morning

  198. and say, officer,

  199. take good care of my church.

  200. The one I bought with my own blood.

  201. Take care of that one.

  202. You'll feel the weight of that

  203. probably even more today than you have before.

  204. Of being asked to care for something so precious to someone else.

  205. Because that is indeed the first thing that the high price shows us

  206. is how valuable and precious the church is to her Savior.

  207. But that's not all we notice when we think about the high bride price

  208. that's paid for the church.

  209. When you pay a high bride price,

  210. it's not merely to communicate how precious and valuable the bride is,

  211. but also how strong and capable the groom is.

  212. That's a big part of what's being communicated as well.

  213. It's why I got asked at the restaurant that night

  214. one of the most common questions

  215. for a guy to get asked in that setting.

  216. How are you going to take care of her?

  217. How are you going to provide for her?

  218. It's why I had in my pocket that night

  219. a copy of a budget for the first year of our marriage.

  220. Because I was that anxious to show to her.

  221. Thankfully, I didn't have to use it.

  222. But it was there just in case things got dicey.

  223. I wanted him to know how much I loved his daughter

  224. and how capable I was of caring for her.

  225. I wanted to show myself as strong and capable

  226. that I intended to provide for her.

  227. In many cultures, that's the primary thing

  228. that a bride price is communicating.

  229. The glory and strength of the groom.

  230. It's a display of his power and his resources.

  231. And so in this text,

  232. we see not only how precious the church is,

  233. but also how powerful her Savior is.

  234. After those verses where Paul challenges the elders

  235. to care faithfully for the flock,

  236. he says this, verse 32.

  237. Now I commend you to God

  238. and to the word of His grace

  239. which is able to build you up

  240. and to give you the inheritance

  241. among all those who are sanctified.

  242. You've been given a tall task,

  243. a great charge,

  244. a high calling.

  245. And Paul says,

  246. do it well.

  247. And now,

  248. I commend you to God

  249. and His word

  250. and His grace.

  251. He is the one who has the power

  252. to bring you through

  253. to the end of the mission.

  254. That's the word there

  255. that we have translated

  256. is able to.

  257. It's the word for power,

  258. for dynamite.

  259. The word is that God is powerful,

  260. that He is strong and capable.

  261. It's one of the words

  262. we saw recently in Ephesians

  263. when we were talking about

  264. the immeasurable greatness of His power

  265. according to the working of His great might,

  266. the resurrection power

  267. that raised Jesus from the dead.

  268. You remember that in Ephesians?

  269. The one that had Jesus exalted

  270. above every power

  271. and principality and authority?

  272. That kind of power?

  273. That's the power that God has.

  274. The power that has Him

  275. reigning over everything

  276. for His church.

  277. That power.

  278. He has that kind of power

  279. to bring us through

  280. from the wolves of outside,

  281. from the deceivers of inside,

  282. and present us perfect

  283. at the end of it all.

  284. That's what Jesus is doing, isn't it?

  285. Ephesians tells us that.

  286. That He shows us

  287. how He's going to care for us

  288. not only in giving His life

  289. and paying that high price

  290. to have us,

  291. but that He continues

  292. to cleanse us,

  293. washing us with water,

  294. with the Word,

  295. until He presents us how?

  296. Holy and blameless,

  297. above reproach,

  298. without blemish.

  299. Did you catch that?

  300. He doesn't stop

  301. at giving His life

  302. that one time, does He?

  303. He's not through then.

  304. He keeps doing that work

  305. all the way until the end.

  306. He never lets His bride go.

  307. That may be my favorite part

  308. of this whole passage in Acts.

  309. Paul seems to be heaping

  310. all this weighty responsibility

  311. all on the shoulders

  312. of these elders

  313. that he's talking to.

  314. Be careful.

  315. Protect her.

  316. Take care of her.

  317. She's precious.

  318. And then he says

  319. these words of grace.

  320. He finishes by saying

  321. when God puts her hand in yours,

  322. He never lets go either.

  323. He doesn't hand her off

  324. and turn His back.

  325. He puts her hand in yours

  326. and then He puts His hand

  327. around both of yours.

  328. It's not,

  329. I'll leave you to it.

  330. Good luck.

  331. It's a big deal.

  332. But I commend you

  333. to God.

  334. You're not on your own.

  335. You're still entrusted to Him.

  336. The One who is able

  337. to see you through

  338. to your full sanctification

  339. and inheritance.

  340. He's the One who's able

  341. to do that.

  342. So you never shepherd

  343. Christ's church on your own.

  344. He never lets her

  345. out of His sight.

  346. How else would you have any hope?

  347. You're weak.

  348. You mess up.

  349. You'd be sure to break

  350. His precious possession.

  351. You'd blow it.

  352. But there's hope for you,

  353. officer,

  354. because you never care

  355. for Christ's bride

  356. on your own.

  357. There's another picture

  358. of Jesus in the book

  359. of Revelation

  360. that this reminds me of.

  361. It's in Revelation chapter 1

    Revelation 1 chapter mention

  362. where Jesus,

  363. who's described

  364. one like a son of man,

  365. is pictured in beautiful imagery

  366. as powerful and wise.

  367. White hair,

  368. fiery eyes,

  369. bronze feet.

  370. He holds in His hand

  371. seven stars.

  372. And He walks around

  373. among seven golden lampstands.

  374. Now in itself,

  375. that picture of Jesus

  376. holding seven stars,

  377. it does give us

  378. a little bit of an idea

  379. of the power

  380. and the majesty

  381. that He must have

  382. to hold those stars.

  383. But it may not mean much

  384. to you until you're told

  385. at the end of the chapter

  386. that the seven stars

  387. stand for the angels,

  388. the leaders,

  389. the representatives

  390. of the seven churches.

  391. And the seven lampstands

  392. stand for the churches themselves.

  393. He's holding those churches

  394. in His hand

  395. and walking around

  396. among them.

  397. He holds all of us

  398. in His hand.

  399. He walks among us.

  400. He will never let go of us

  401. or leave us to ourselves.

  402. Friends,

  403. where do you feel weak

  404. or vulnerable?

  405. What situation

  406. makes you fearful?

  407. Is it one where

  408. it's unfamiliar?

  409. Where you're feeling alone

  410. or incapable

  411. of handling it?

  412. Is it the words

  413. of a naysayer

  414. from recently

  415. or from long ago

  416. that have you discouraged

  417. and afraid?

  418. The picture of Jesus

  419. we need to see

  420. is the glorious,

  421. exalted Savior

  422. holding the seven stars

  423. in His hand.

  424. The one who will fight

  425. for us.

  426. The one who will sustain us.

  427. The one who promises

  428. the gates of hell

  429. will not prevail against us

  430. that He's that strong.

  431. You may look up here

  432. on this stage

  433. some Sunday mornings

  434. and see your pastors

  435. and know some of our frailties

  436. and begin to be fearful.

  437. You may look up here

  438. this morning

  439. at men being ordained

  440. to elder and deacon

  441. and you may know

  442. their weaknesses

  443. and be concerned.

  444. You need to see

  445. beyond these men

  446. to the powerful God

  447. behind them.

  448. It is He,

  449. verse 28 says,

  450. who has called them

  451. to care for His bride.

  452. He has called them.

  453. Even as He is

  454. most fully aware

  455. of all of their weaknesses,

  456. He has called them.

  457. Southwood,

  458. your trust

  459. is not in a few

  460. new elders

  461. or deacons

  462. this morning.

  463. Your trust

  464. is in a powerful Savior

  465. who holds all of them

  466. and all of us

  467. in His hand.

  468. Amen?

  469. Your trust

  470. is in a Lamb

  471. who would give

  472. His life

  473. for you

  474. because you're

  475. precious to Him.

  476. Amen?

  477. He is powerful

  478. for us

  479. and we are

  480. precious

  481. to Him.

  482. Let's pray.

  483. Father,

  484. we need to believe

  485. that we struggle

  486. because we

  487. so prefer

  488. to be strong

  489. on our own.

  490. It's easy

  491. to put our trust

  492. in princes,

  493. in mortal men

  494. who cannot save

  495. when You indeed

  496. are strong

  497. and mighty

  498. and have saved

  499. and continue

  500. to save.

  501. Father,

  502. would we see You

  503. this morning

  504. as strong

  505. and mighty?

  506. Would we see

  507. our Bridegroom

  508. Jesus Christ

  509. glorious and exalted?

  510. Would we get

  511. great joy from that

  512. and great joy

  513. in celebrating

  514. together

  515. how He is

  516. caring

  517. for His church?

  518. Father,

  519. would that be

  520. the joy of our hearts

  521. even during

  522. these next few minutes

  523. we ask in His name.

  524. Amen.

  525. Amen.
