  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. Turn with me, if you will, to Ephesians chapter 3, Ephesians 3.

    Ephesians 3 chapter mention

  5. After a brief detour last week, we're back in Ephesians again this morning.

  6. We're going to be talking about a mystery Paul writes about in these verses.

  7. There's very little I love more than a good mystery.

  8. I grew up on the Hardy Boys, read all of those that I could find,

  9. and I still love a good intriguing drama with the suspense of whodunit and how's everything going to turn out.

  10. The mystery Paul talks about is a little different from those,

  11. but it's really good news for us.

  12. Listen as he mentions this mystery three times in these six verses.

  13. Ephesians 3 at verse 1, hear God's holy word.

  14. For this reason, I, Paul, the prisoner of Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles,

  15. surely you have heard about the administration of God's grace that was given to me for you.

  16. That is the mystery made known to me by revelation as I've already written briefly.

  17. In reading this, then, you will be able to understand my insight into the mystery of Christ,

  18. which was not made known to men and other generations as it has now been revealed by the Spirit

  19. to God's holy apostles and prophets.

  20. This mystery is that through the gospel, the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel,

  21. members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.

  22. The grass withers and the flowers fade, but these words of our God will stand forever.

  23. Let's pray together.

  24. Father, our hope is that because these are your words,

  25. because they indeed are living and active,

  26. that you will be at work in our hearts this morning.

  27. That's why we've come to put ourselves under your word,

  28. to submit our hearts to it,

  29. and we would pray, Father,

  30. open our eyes that we might behold wonderful things in your word.

  31. Do that by your Spirit, we ask in Jesus' name.

  32. Amen.

  33. Amen.

  34. Our nation has been horrified this week

  35. as stories have come from Oklahoma University

  36. about a fraternity on a bus

  37. singing and chanting very disgraceful racist words.

  38. We've been horrified.

  39. Rightfully so.

  40. As new information has come out and new videos have leaked,

  41. just can't believe that this is happening.

  42. Most of the interviews I've seen say something like that.

  43. I mean, it's 2015.

  44. I can't believe that stuff like this is still going on.

  45. And I can relate to that feeling.

  46. At one level, I agree.

  47. You'd think we could have left hatred like that behind by now.

  48. But on the other hand,

  49. it's not just one group of young people

  50. that struggles with separating from others

  51. based on a unique aspect of their identity, is it?

  52. For others, it may not be skin color.

  53. Think about the increasingly polarized state of our politics in this country.

  54. Where identifying as Democrat or Republican

  55. or actually neither but any other name you want to use

  56. means that I'm not likely to work alongside you,

  57. someone else of a different political commitment or affiliation.

  58. But it distances me from you.

  59. It identifies me as against you.

  60. I can't work with you in many cases.

  61. We see it to some extent with our country in general.

  62. That we're Americans and so there's us and the rest of the world.

  63. Some of them we even have names like Third World.

  64. Two steps removed.

  65. We're defined as Americans.

  66. We find our identity often in our success.

  67. Be that our lifestyle, our morality, our power.

  68. Something that we feel sets us apart from everybody else.

  69. And what you realize very quickly is that

  70. we as people have a natural tendency to find our identity

  71. in some aspect of ourselves that distances us from others.

  72. From those who don't share that particular trait.

  73. It can be race, politics, or nationality.

  74. It can equally be many other things.

  75. I remember when I was a child and desperately wanting to fit in.

  76. To belong somewhere.

  77. That the best way to do that was to find a group

  78. that I could be a part of

  79. and belong there where others didn't belong.

  80. You could say things like,

  81. I'm an athlete

  82. and therefore I'm distinguished from others who aren't.

  83. But I belong in the we're the athletes group.

  84. That doesn't work for me anymore.

  85. Unfortunately.

  86. But I've just gotten more creative as an adult.

  87. I think of other things that can set me apart.

  88. Things that we look at that give us value.

  89. That help us belong somewhere.

  90. It could be our parenting philosophy.

  91. We're good moms and dads who do things like this

  92. and would never do that or say this.

  93. Our educational level.

  94. We honestly feel we're above some others

  95. who don't know what we do

  96. or talk as we do

  97. or think the way we do.

  98. Even our theological persuasion.

  99. We've got it right and others don't.

  100. Presbyterians are really good at that.

  101. But regardless of what it is,

  102. we see this tendency to find our identity,

  103. our sense of belonging

  104. in something about ourselves

  105. and thereby separate or distance ourselves

  106. from others who aren't described the same way.

  107. Who don't have that trait.

  108. And Jesus says,

  109. not so among my people.

  110. Jesus says the way it's supposed to work

  111. is like this.

  112. That the defining identity of my people

  113. is not something particular about them at all.

  114. It's that they're connected to me.

  115. They belong because they are in Christ,

  116. Ephesians has been saying.

  117. And that that shared reality of being in Christ

  118. connects them also to each other.

  119. Even otherwise very different people

  120. connected by that.

  121. Go back and remember chapter 1.

  122. Do you remember talking about

  123. everything that happens in Christ?

  124. Every spiritual blessing that is ours in Christ?

  125. The new identity that Jesus gives us

  126. because of what He has done?

  127. Because He has given His life for us?

  128. Now as we get to chapter 2,

  129. what Paul says is,

  130. it's not just a new identity for you.

  131. That new identity in Christ connects you.

  132. The fact that you're connected to Him

  133. connects you to many others.

  134. All His people are connected in Christ.

  135. That's why we've been using this image

  136. for this sermon series.

  137. It's not just an image of saying

  138. we're connected to God in Christ,

  139. although that's certainly true.

  140. But that reality connects us also to each other.

  141. And so that arm in arm and hand in hand,

  142. because of Jesus,

  143. that's what His people are to look like.

  144. And that's actually the mystery

  145. that Paul is unfolding here in chapter 3.

  146. That previously separated and disconnected enemies

  147. like Jews and Gentiles

  148. are now connected together

  149. because of Jesus.

  150. Look how he says it in verse 6.

  151. The mystery,

  152. he's going to tell us what it is,

  153. the mystery is that through the gospel,

  154. the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel,

  155. members together of one body,

  156. and sharers together in the promise

  157. in Christ Jesus.

  158. That's the mystery.

  159. He tells us when Paul uses the word mystery,

  160. it's actually different from the things

  161. the Hardy Boys solve.

  162. He actually is talking,

  163. when he uses that word,

  164. of something that is now apparent

  165. and understood,

  166. but that has been more hidden in the past.

  167. Something that was less clear

  168. than it is now,

  169. and now it's more fully revealed.

  170. In particular, when Paul uses it,

  171. it means the truth revealed in a new way

  172. in Jesus the Messiah.

  173. That was previously less clear

  174. in the Old Testament.

  175. Look at verses 4 and 5.

  176. In reading this,

  177. you'll be able to understand

  178. my insight into the mystery of Christ.

  179. That's the Greek word for Messiah.

  180. The one who's promised to come.

  181. That's the mystery.

  182. The mystery was not made known

  183. to men and other generations

  184. in the way that it has now been revealed

  185. by the Spirit.

  186. In other words,

  187. something has come into focus better.

  188. Something has been more fully revealed

  189. than it was,

  190. and it's something that happens in Jesus.

  191. Now you know the Jews and Gentiles

  192. had a great distaste for each other.

  193. Jews viewing Gentiles as unclean

  194. and unworthy.

  195. Greeks largely viewing Jews

  196. and any non-Greeks as barbaric

  197. and not civilized like they were.

  198. The animosity between these groups

  199. was every bit as strong

  200. as the racial tensions in this country

  201. that I alluded to earlier.

  202. It was race, ethnicity,

  203. and religious heritage

  204. all tied up in one.

  205. Defining their basic identity

  206. against the others

  207. who were clearly not like them.

  208. But you may also be thinking,

  209. what does Paul mean?

  210. This is a new revelation

  211. of this mystery.

  212. I thought the Old Testament

  213. already talked about

  214. the salvation of the Gentiles

  215. and that that was part of God's plan.

  216. And it was.

  217. And it absolutely does

  218. talk about that.

  219. There are clues, so to speak,

  220. all the way back to Abraham

  221. where the nations are to be blessed

  222. through God's people.

  223. But the promised Messiah

  224. is always pointed to

  225. as the time things will really change.

  226. Things are really going to be different.

  227. And Paul's saying

  228. it's even more dramatic a shift

  229. than the Jews had realized.

  230. Let me explain what I mean by that

  231. by talking about the temple

  232. for just a few minutes.

  233. The temple's a huge issue in Ephesians

  234. and the temple in Jerusalem

  235. is a marvelous structure

  236. in any iteration of it.

  237. A wonderful work.

  238. And this is one picture of it.

  239. You see the big central location

  240. there in the middle?

  241. I'll describe that in a minute.

  242. And then the courtyard

  243. around the outside.

  244. I'm going to show you a diagram

  245. so we can talk a little bit more clearly

  246. in just a minute.

  247. But I want you to see the picture

  248. because the diagram's going to lose

  249. a lot of the grandeur and beauty

  250. of this temple.

  251. But there's the temple in Jerusalem.

  252. And then let's look at the diagram

  253. for a second.

  254. Here's a diagram of the temple.

  255. That large center structure

  256. that you see is right at the center

  257. of this diagram

  258. with a dark black line around it.

  259. It's called the Holy of Holies.

  260. The very center of the temple.

  261. The place where God dwelled.

  262. It was holy because God lived there.

  263. In the Old Testament,

  264. that was where He took up residence

  265. among His people

  266. in the Holy of Holies.

  267. And so that was the center

  268. of the entire temple complex.

  269. And near it,

  270. surrounding that,

  271. you had the court of the priests.

  272. That next little block around it

  273. where only the priests could go.

  274. And beyond that,

  275. you had what was called

  276. the court of Israel.

  277. Places where Jewish men

  278. and women could come.

  279. They could offer sacrifices.

  280. There were altars there.

  281. The worship of God happened there.

  282. And Gentiles did not.

  283. No Gentiles.

  284. Too close to the presence of God

  285. for Gentiles.

  286. They couldn't come

  287. into the court of Israel

  288. where the Jews could come.

  289. They can't get near God.

  290. And so it's the outer courtyard,

  291. the court of the Gentiles,

  292. where they stop.

  293. That's as close as they can get.

  294. They're unclean.

  295. They're unworthy.

  296. They can't approach any closer.

  297. They can't go in with the Jews

  298. to worship their God,

  299. to be near Him.

  300. They're separated by walls

  301. and stairs from the presence of God.

  302. Unclean.

  303. Unworthy to enter any closer.

  304. Look back at the picture.

  305. You see the walls

  306. around that center area?

  307. Do you see now

  308. that this outer courtyard

  309. is where the Gentiles were?

  310. And huge, beautiful walls

  311. and stairs saying,

  312. you stay out there

  313. in the courtyard.

  314. That's where the Gentiles were

  315. in the temple.

  316. And they took this very seriously.

  317. The penalty for a Gentile

  318. entering the court of Israel

  319. was death.

  320. Paul, a Jew,

  321. experienced this firsthand.

  322. He says at the beginning

  323. of our passage this morning

  324. that he is in prison

  325. for the sake of the Gentiles.

  326. Verse 1.

  327. What does he mean by that?

  328. How's Paul in prison

  329. for the sake of the Gentiles?

  330. Look back at Acts.

  331. Paul actually went through a lot

  332. that had to do with the temple

  333. to end up in prison.

  334. If you look in Acts,

  335. you'll find out that Paul

  336. was in this very temple

  337. we've been talking about

  338. in Jerusalem

  339. doing some purification.

  340. And look at what happens.

  341. Acts chapter 21,

    Acts 21:27

  342. verse 27.

  343. The Jews from Asia,

  344. from places like Ephesus,

  345. saw Paul in the temple

  346. and stirred up the whole crowd

  347. and laid hands on him,

  348. crying out,

  349. Men of Israel, help!

  350. This is the man

  351. who's teaching everyone everywhere

  352. against the people

  353. and the law

  354. and this place.

  355. Against the Jews

  356. and our law

  357. and this temple.

  358. Moreover,

  359. he even brought Greeks

  360. into the temple

  361. and has defiled

  362. this holy place.

  363. They get stirred up

  364. against Paul

  365. to the point of,

  366. look at verse 30,

  367. what happens?

  368. All the city was stirred up.

  369. The people ran together,

  370. seized Paul,

  371. dragged him out of the temple,

  372. shut the gates

  373. and as they were seeking

  374. to kill him,

  375. the death penalty

  376. for bringing a Gentile

  377. into the court of Israel,

  378. word came to the tribune

  379. of the cohort

  380. that all Jerusalem

  381. was in confusion.

  382. This is no small city.

  383. The temple's big enough.

  384. The whole city in confusion.

  385. An uproar over this man,

  386. Paul.

  387. Now it turns out

  388. that Paul hadn't actually

  389. brought a Gentile

  390. into the court of Israel.

  391. But the message

  392. that he's preaching,

  393. they still can't stomach.

  394. He's going to the Gentiles.

  395. And that lands him in prison.

  396. The prison, in fact,

  397. from which he writes Ephesians.

  398. They're still angry

  399. at what they hear

  400. he's been teaching

  401. in places like Ephesians 2.

  402. The message to the Gentiles

  403. that the barriers

  404. between Jew and Gentile

  405. have been broken down

  406. and that together

  407. they're being built

  408. into a holy temple

  409. in which God lives

  410. by His Spirit.

  411. You remember that

  412. from the end of chapter 2?

  413. Jew and Gentile

  414. now together

  415. built into a holy temple

  416. where God lives

  417. by His Spirit.

  418. And the Jews say,

  419. Ridiculous!

  420. Never!

  421. Take His life!

  422. Paul, you're removing

  423. our very distinctiveness.

  424. There's going to be nothing

  425. that separates us

  426. from them anymore.

  427. You're destroying

  428. our unique identity.

  429. Maybe some of them, Paul,

  430. could become

  431. a little bit more like us,

  432. but never this.

  433. Wipe the temple out

  434. and build a new one?

  435. No way.

  436. No way.

  437. Do you hear what Paul's saying

  438. in a passage like this one

  439. in Ephesians 2?

  440. Where at the end

  441. of that chapter

  442. he's saying

  443. the whole group,

  444. Jew and Gentile alike,

  445. are going to be

  446. a holy temple

  447. to the Lord.

  448. And he's going to dwell

  449. there by His Spirit.

  450. Do you hear what he's saying

  451. when he says that?

  452. He's saying

  453. that the mystery

  454. is not merely

  455. that Gentiles

  456. could now be invited

  457. into the Jewish part

  458. of the temple

  459. near to God,

  460. but that Jesus

  461. was building

  462. an entirely new temple

  463. altogether.

  464. A new structure

  465. completely

  466. with Jesus

  467. as the cornerstone.

  468. Now God dwells

  469. not in Jerusalem,

  470. not in a building

  471. where He's contained,

  472. but His presence

  473. shows up in His people

  474. who are connected

  475. to Jesus.

  476. Jews and Gentiles.

  477. Amazing.

  478. Something completely new.

  479. The mystery

  480. of the new temple

  481. is solved,

  482. Paul says.

  483. It's fully unfolded.

  484. The presence of God

  485. used to be contained

  486. in this temple

  487. and now Jews

  488. and Gentiles

  489. and all sorts of people

  490. are connected to Jesus

  491. and are being built

  492. into a new temple.

  493. because the presence

  494. of God

  495. will be there.

  496. And that's what

  497. made the temple special.

  498. That's why it was holy.

  499. Because God was there.

  500. Because He lived there

  501. and now

  502. He lives

  503. with them.

  504. And that makes

  505. all the difference.

  506. Being connected

  507. to Jesus,

  508. having the presence

  509. of God show up

  510. is now the thing

  511. in common

  512. that so supersedes

  513. all the differences

  514. you thought

  515. were so important.

  516. Now Paul says

  517. the mystery is

  518. that together,

  519. together,

  520. together,

  521. Jews and Gentiles.

  522. We don't even have

  523. English words

  524. for what he says

  525. in verse 6.

  526. In fact,

  527. Paul's probably

  528. making up

  529. some Greek words.

  530. What he does

  531. is he takes

  532. a prefix

  533. for with

  534. or together

  535. and just throws it

  536. on the front

  537. of three different nouns.

  538. So that Jews

  539. and Gentiles

  540. are now

  541. heirs together

  542. and members together

  543. and sharers together.

  544. How could you not

  545. be a sharer together?

  546. It's redundant.

  547. It's for emphasis.

  548. They're together.

  549. Jews and Gentiles,

  550. no distinction.

  551. All of God's riches,

  552. all the privileges

  553. of membership

  554. in God's people,

  555. all the benefits

  556. of His promises

  557. now held jointly,

  558. together,

  559. in Christ Jesus.

  560. That new identity

  561. is so redefining

  562. that the differences fade.

  563. And what most matters,

  564. what most defines us

  565. is shared.

  566. The Gentiles

  567. aren't just

  568. in the temple,

  569. they're stones

  570. making up

  571. the temple,

  572. right up alongside

  573. the purest Jew

  574. with no distinction.

  575. You don't have

  576. to be circumcised,

  577. purified,

  578. catechized

  579. to be a part

  580. of this temple,

  581. do you?

  582. Do you feel

  583. the scandal in that?

  584. Probably not a lot.

  585. You're not a

  586. first century Jew.

  587. But that was radical.

  588. That was a dramatic shift.

  589. In fact,

  590. I'll say it this way,

  591. you don't have to be

  592. American,

  593. Southern,

  594. Presbyterian,

  595. or Republican,

  596. do you?

  597. It's a little less friendly,

  598. isn't it?

  599. We're just getting started.

  600. Your religious heritage

  601. doesn't define you

  602. in God's temple.

  603. You're not a more

  604. honored stone

  605. because your theology

  606. is more accurate.

  607. Your past is more pure

  608. or your worship style

  609. is more relevant.

  610. You're not.

  611. That needs to rattle

  612. some of us

  613. so that we see

  614. where we've made

  615. an idol

  616. of something good.

  617. Where we've found

  618. something that's important

  619. and we've used it

  620. to find our sense

  621. of identity

  622. and belonging

  623. and keep others

  624. at a distance.

  625. We find our identity

  626. over and against

  627. someone else.

  628. But guess what else

  629. is true?

  630. You're not left out

  631. or disconnected

  632. or a less honored stone

  633. because of the reverse

  634. of these things.

  635. Your history,

  636. the past sins

  637. you've committed

  638. or sins that have been

  639. committed against you,

  640. they don't define you

  641. in God's temple.

  642. You're not left out.

  643. You're not a second class

  644. Christian.

  645. There are no

  646. second class Christians.

  647. What defines all of us

  648. is that because we are

  649. connected to Jesus,

  650. God is there.

  651. God is willing

  652. to dwell with you

  653. despite the shame

  654. you have from your past

  655. or your present.

  656. Isn't that good news?

  657. God will dwell with you

  658. and that makes

  659. all the difference.

  660. You belong.

  661. Your identity

  662. is found in someone

  663. beyond yourself.

  664. in your connection

  665. to Jesus

  666. and God's dwelling

  667. in you by His Spirit.

  668. He's in each of us

  669. individually

  670. and there are passages

  671. that talk about that

  672. but the idea

  673. in these verses

  674. is of the corporate temple.

  675. All of us diverse people

  676. together in Christ

  677. are in one unified building

  678. to house the very presence

  679. of God

  680. where God dwells

  681. by His Spirit.

  682. God dwells there.

  683. Oh, if God dwells there

  684. what sorts of amazing things

  685. might happen?

  686. Things we couldn't

  687. otherwise predict

  688. or expect.

  689. I love it when we see

  690. evidence

  691. of these beautiful realities

  692. in our local community

  693. here at Southwood

  694. in our relationships.

  695. You can catch a glimpse

  696. of it week in

  697. and week out

  698. in small groups.

  699. Let me read you a comment

  700. made by a Southwood member

  701. last week

  702. on our small group blog.

  703. She wrote this,

  704. Coming from a place

  705. where commonalities

  706. brought people together

  707. I had my share of complaints

  708. when I first came to Southwood

  709. and felt so deeply

  710. that these are not my people

  711. but I've been astounded

  712. at the grace of God

  713. that unites those

  714. who confess their need

  715. and delight

  716. in a Savior

  717. who has rescued us.

  718. When I look around

  719. on Communion Sunday

  720. I ponder this amazing gift.

  721. People from different backgrounds,

  722. ages, stages

  723. and perhaps even understanding

  724. of the Gospel

  725. and I think

  726. with humbling gratitude

  727. these are my people.

  728. We're brought together

  729. because of Jesus

  730. regardless of our differences.

  731. Small groups

  732. have been a valuable place

  733. for me to discover

  734. what true unity

  735. is all about.

  736. Amen.

  737. We get a glimpse of it

  738. in working alongside

  739. our ministry partners

  740. both locally

  741. and globally

  742. praying for someone

  743. in South Sudan.

  744. I was reminded

  745. of this again

  746. at the work day

  747. last weekend

  748. as I had the joy

  749. of shoveling mulch

  750. and pulling weeds

  751. alongside brothers

  752. and sisters

  753. who live in different

  754. parts of town

  755. who have different

  756. perspectives on life

  757. and how they think

  758. about things

  759. who have different

  760. skin colors

  761. and who are part

  762. of the temple

  763. that God's included

  764. me in too.

  765. I got a glimpse of it

  766. at Bible school

  767. last summer

  768. when I saw a video

  769. of a retired

  770. submarine captain

  771. washing the feet

  772. of young kids.

  773. An elder in the church

  774. but kneeling down

  775. to those

  776. I don't know

  777. a lot of years

  778. younger than he is.

  779. Anything else

  780. gives away his age.

  781. Beautiful.

  782. What connects us

  783. is not age

  784. or intelligence

  785. hobby

  786. or household income

  787. it's Jesus

  788. and so God

  789. builds us together

  790. and shows up

  791. in remarkable ways

  792. right in the midst

  793. of us.

  794. Imagine what God

  795. might do

  796. if he was really there

  797. not just in these moments

  798. not just in a few examples

  799. I can give you

  800. but through us

  801. corporately

  802. all the time

  803. if he was there

  804. where and how

  805. are you experiencing

  806. his presence

  807. among his people

  808. it's good isn't it

  809. when you're a part

  810. of that.

  811. We've also got to ask

  812. ourselves the question

  813. this morning

  814. not just where are we

  815. experiencing it

  816. but where are we

  817. missing these opportunities?

  818. Where is diversity

  819. lacking

  820. or a barrier

  821. coming up?

  822. Where are we

  823. separating ourselves

  824. from brothers and sisters

  825. we should be

  826. celebrating with?

  827. Here's the rub

  828. for us

  829. God says

  830. if I've taken up

  831. residence there

  832. if I've connected

  833. them to my son

  834. you dare not

  835. back away

  836. and disconnect

  837. from them

  838. if I'm willing

  839. to dwell with them

  840. you dare not

  841. move further

  842. away

  843. don't rebuild

  844. a barrier

  845. Jesus has torn down

  846. that's Paul's warning

  847. to the Jews

  848. and Gentiles

  849. in Ephesus

  850. with whom has your heart

  851. built a barrier

  852. that shouldn't

  853. separate you

  854. who doesn't

  855. perform up to

  856. your standards

  857. who doesn't

  858. get the gospel

  859. the way you think

  860. they should

  861. I encourage you

  862. to dig down

  863. just a little there

  864. when you think

  865. about those questions

  866. you don't have to

  867. go far

  868. what you'll likely

  869. find

  870. is the thing

  871. or one of the things

  872. you're using

  873. to define yourself

  874. so that you belong

  875. and they don't

  876. quite fit in

  877. or measure up

  878. you wouldn't

  879. you wouldn't say

  880. it that way

  881. you're not

  882. trying to kick

  883. them out of heaven

  884. or even the church

  885. but be honest

  886. with yourself

  887. you think you're

  888. a little better

  889. than they are

  890. a little worthier

  891. a little more

  892. important in the kingdom

  893. you say I'm

  894. I'm just more

  895. mature

  896. and you mean

  897. I'm I'm more

  898. valuable

  899. others of you say

  900. I'm more real

  901. or transparent

  902. you mean more

  903. important

  904. what's the thing

  905. you're basing

  906. that on

  907. what's the thing

  908. when you feel

  909. that in your heart

  910. that that's what

  911. allows you to feel

  912. that way

  913. what makes you

  914. belong more

  915. or be

  916. better

  917. on the positive

  918. proactive side

  919. who are you

  920. connecting with

  921. moving toward

  922. developing relationship

  923. with who's

  924. not like you

  925. in age

  926. perspective

  927. marital status

  928. race

  929. church background

  930. what barrier

  931. are you proactively

  932. continuing to push down

  933. that tries to

  934. creep up

  935. remember

  936. it's not just

  937. okay

  938. if a few of them

  939. become a little

  940. more like us

  941. the gospel

  942. says we have to

  943. deal actively

  944. with the thing

  945. that makes us

  946. feel we belong

  947. and gives us

  948. unique identity

  949. and separates us

  950. from them

  951. that's an issue

  952. in our hearts

  953. that we must

  954. deal with

  955. I assure you

  956. that Jews and Gentiles

  957. didn't immediately

  958. look and act

  959. the same

  960. just because

  961. they all met

  962. Jesus

  963. in fact

  964. Paul says

  965. in some ways

  966. they shouldn't

  967. there are things

  968. they shouldn't

  969. do the same

  970. people with

  971. different backgrounds

  972. and experiences

  973. may dress

  974. parent

  975. act

  976. speak

  977. and so forth

  978. differently

  979. from you

  980. but they may

  981. well be rescued

  982. by the same

  983. Savior

  984. and indwelt

  985. by the same

  986. Spirit

  987. as you

  988. and if we're

  989. going to let

  990. God tell us

  991. what matters

  992. what really

  993. defines us

  994. and makes us

  995. belong

  996. if he gets

  997. to be in charge

  998. of that

  999. I hope he does

  1000. that's it

  1001. that's all

  1002. where he shows

  1003. up and dwells

  1004. that's what

  1005. matters

  1006. that's what

  1007. brings you

  1008. together

  1009. and he dwells

  1010. in the temple

  1011. the temple

  1012. built of those

  1013. connected

  1014. to his son

  1015. that's the only

  1016. thing that defines

  1017. them or makes

  1018. them belong

  1019. don't you make

  1020. a higher standard

  1021. than God has

  1022. we belong

  1023. with him

  1024. he says

  1025. we don't need

  1026. another club

  1027. to include us

  1028. one last thing

  1029. before we're done

  1030. this morning

  1031. for those of you

  1032. who are here

  1033. and thinking

  1034. to yourself

  1035. this just

  1036. confirms everything

  1037. that I thought

  1038. about the church

  1039. already

  1040. they're just

  1041. one more club

  1042. like all the rest

  1043. just one more

  1044. click with a

  1045. different set

  1046. of things

  1047. that set them

  1048. apart

  1049. separate them

  1050. from others

  1051. I hear that

  1052. concern

  1053. and understand

  1054. it

  1055. in fact

  1056. I've watched

  1057. it

  1058. and I've done

  1059. it

  1060. a lot of

  1061. times

  1062. found a way

  1063. to make myself

  1064. feel good

  1065. and thereby

  1066. separate

  1067. from others

  1068. a lot of times

  1069. churches

  1070. and Christians

  1071. act like that

  1072. separating

  1073. ourselves

  1074. from others

  1075. saying you

  1076. need to be

  1077. more like us

  1078. to belong

  1079. here

  1080. and be a part

  1081. of our

  1082. community

  1083. we've said it

  1084. with our

  1085. words

  1086. and with our

  1087. actions

  1088. and we need

  1089. to ask your

  1090. forgiveness

  1091. because among

  1092. other things

  1093. when we've done

  1094. that

  1095. we've lied

  1096. to you

  1097. about Christianity

  1098. we have

  1099. there's actually

  1100. a difference

  1101. with Jesus

  1102. from all the

  1103. other clubs

  1104. you'd lump

  1105. us in

  1106. with

  1107. there's actually

  1108. a difference

  1109. with Jesus

  1110. instead of

  1111. pushing away

  1112. and separating

  1113. from you

  1114. Jesus draws

  1115. near and

  1116. invites you

  1117. in

  1118. all of you

  1119. that's what the

  1120. incarnation

  1121. Christmas

  1122. is all about

  1123. and reminds us

  1124. of

  1125. that Jesus

  1126. moves towards

  1127. us and

  1128. enters into

  1129. relationship

  1130. he doesn't

  1131. stand far

  1132. off and

  1133. demand that

  1134. you be

  1135. better and

  1136. change to

  1137. get into his

  1138. club

  1139. he invites you

  1140. to come into

  1141. his family

  1142. where we're all

  1143. defined

  1144. not by something

  1145. about us

  1146. but by being

  1147. loved

  1148. by him

  1149. not by how

  1150. well we've

  1151. cleaned up

  1152. but by how

  1153. wonderful our

  1154. savior is

  1155. where we're

  1156. all dressed

  1157. in rags

  1158. until he

  1159. gives us

  1160. the perfect

  1161. robes of

  1162. his

  1163. righteousness

  1164. welcoming

  1165. inviting

  1166. safe

  1167. that's the

  1168. kind of

  1169. community

  1170. you should

  1171. find in

  1172. Jesus

  1173. followers

  1174. even though

  1175. you often

  1176. don't

  1177. and I would

  1178. say to you

  1179. this morning

  1180. don't let

  1181. that be

  1182. a reason

  1183. that keeps

  1184. you from

  1185. Jesus

  1186. instead

  1187. come help

  1188. us

  1189. help us

  1190. live and

  1191. love

  1192. others

  1193. more like

  1194. he does

  1195. may we

  1196. be a

  1197. community

  1198. where

  1199. finding our

  1200. identity

  1201. only in

  1202. Christ

  1203. binds us

  1204. to each

  1205. other

  1206. deeply

  1207. and moves

  1208. us towards

  1209. others

  1210. constantly

  1211. let's pray

  1212. to that end

  1213. father if

  1214. that's really

  1215. going to be

  1216. true of

  1217. me

  1218. if that's

  1219. really going

  1220. to be

  1221. true of

  1222. Southwood

  1223. if that's

  1224. really going

  1225. to be

  1226. true of

  1227. the church

  1228. of Jesus

  1229. Christ in

  1230. Huntsville

  1231. and around

  1232. the world

  1233. your spirit

  1234. is going to

  1235. have to

  1236. convince us

  1237. it's safe

  1238. to be defined

  1239. by being in

  1240. Jesus

  1241. not by all

  1242. the other

  1243. things we

  1244. love to

  1245. take credit

  1246. for

  1247. things about

  1248. us that we

  1249. feel like would

  1250. distinguish us

  1251. Holy Spirit

  1252. would you do

  1253. that work

  1254. would you

  1255. start here

  1256. in our

  1257. hearts and

  1258. in this

  1259. church and

  1260. would we be

  1261. a place that

  1262. indeed reflects

  1263. the welcoming

  1264. and inviting

  1265. heart of

  1266. our Savior

  1267. would we

  1268. find ourselves

  1269. completely

  1270. dependent upon

  1271. him

  1272. and on

  1273. nothing else

  1274. father send

  1275. your spirit

  1276. here do that

  1277. work in new

  1278. and different

  1279. ways moment

  1280. by moment in

  1281. each of our

  1282. hearts

  1283. we ask in
