  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. And that was the best introduction I have ever had.

  4. And I think if my mom would have been alive and here to have heard it, she would have believed it.

  5. But, man, it's great to be here.

  6. Gosh, two and a half years ago was the last time I was here, probably standing up here.

  7. And some of you guys know, you need to know that some of you all still sit in the same place.

  8. It's true. I can look at it. It's hysterical.

  9. But it's great to be here.

  10. The text this morning is not like a Palm Sunday text.

  11. But it's out of Proverbs.

  12. But in preparation for this morning, I was reading through the Palm Sunday,

  13. the triumphal entry of Jesus in some of the Gospels.

  14. And something stood out for me in John chapter 12.

    John 12 chapter mention

  15. And it's the part right after Jesus has come into the city.

  16. And John tells of the story of some Greeks, some Gentiles that come to Philip.

  17. And then Philip goes to Andrew because they want to see Jesus.

  18. And they go and they tell Jesus.

  19. And then Jesus answers them.

  20. And he says to tell them that the hour has come.

  21. The hour where the Son of Man is to be glorified has come.

  22. And then he goes on to tell them this.

  23. He says that,

  24. And then Jesus goes on to talk about how whoever loves his life will lose it.

  25. Whoever hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.

  26. And so the message he's giving as he's come powerfully into the city,

  27. he's starting to tell what's going to happen to him.

  28. He is going to die.

  29. And then there's going to bear much fruit.

  30. Right?

  31. But then he talks about us.

  32. He says that if we hate our life, in this life, in this world,

  33. we'll gain something greater.

  34. So this idea that he's telling us is that the way up is down.

  35. There's a humility that we're going to be called to.

  36. Because as we go into the world,

  37. it's a kind of world where things don't go the way that we want them to.

  38. The unexpected things happen.

  39. Our expectations are here and the reality is here.

  40. There's a difference.

  41. And he's preparing these Greeks, these Gentiles for this.

  42. And it got me thinking in terms of my life,

  43. how I face things, you know,

  44. things that happen unexpectedly.

  45. My expectations are here, but then reality is here.

  46. What happens?

  47. How do I gap?

  48. How do I bridge that gap?

  49. And usually what I want is a quick fix.

  50. I want something to be fixed quickly.

  51. In this world, things happen unexpectedly.

  52. And I want a quick fix.

  53. And I'm looking for a life hack most of the time.

  54. Do you know what a life hack is?

  55. You've heard of a life hack?

  56. It's sort of just kind of a quick fix for things.

  57. There's even like whole websites dedicated for a life hack.

  58. And one of them that I found,

  59. and it's hysterical because it was so disappointing.

  60. I needed some quick fixes,

  61. and I went to this whole website for a life hack.

  62. And this is how they define a life hack.

  63. A life hack is being,

  64. it's little ways that make our lives easier.

  65. Okay?

  66. So when our expectations are here

  67. and reality's here,

  68. I need a quick fix.

  69. I need my life made easier.

  70. So here's a life hack.

  71. And here's a few of them,

  72. and they're horrible.

  73. They're not going to make your life easier.

  74. But listen,

  75. this is supposed to make your life easier.

  76. You know those binder clips,

  77. those black binder clips?

  78. They got like certain sizes.

  79. If you take those,

  80. you stick them on the back behind your desk,

  81. you can organize all your cables

  82. through the little loop on it.

  83. Easy life.

  84. That's a good one.

  85. There was another one.

  86. There was one that was about

  87. what to do with pancake batter,

  88. how to make your life easier.

  89. They say to put it in a squeeze bottle,

  90. you know,

  91. a ketchup squeeze bottle.

  92. Put your pancake batter in that.

  93. Let's do the pancake batter math here for a second.

  94. First,

  95. first to get a ketchup bottle empty,

  96. I got to get rid of the ketchup.

  97. First,

  98. I got to clean a squeeze bottle of ketchup.

  99. Now that's done.

  100. Then I've got to make my batter.

  101. Then I got to get the batter into that thing.

  102. And my batter will take like ketchup from now on.

  103. So one last little one.

  104. This one is about how to organize your keys.

  105. If you got a lot of keys,

  106. get fingernail polish,

  107. different colors,

  108. and you're supposed to paint the top of them

  109. different colors.

  110. And then you'll know what key is to go to what.

  111. But then I think you need one of those

  112. little quarterback cheat sheets

  113. to tell you, you know,

  114. which key goes to what.

  115. Okay, so I failed with the life hacks.

  116. But I still,

  117. I want to figure out how to make life easy.

  118. And I think this is something that marketers

  119. and advertisers are really,

  120. they've been leveraging for years.

  121. Because we want a quick fix to stop.

  122. And have you seen in the,

  123. like on websites,

  124. they have little advertisements.

  125. And they'll tell you about one weird trick.

  126. There's one weird trick out there.

  127. And one of them was a weird trick

  128. on how to save,

  129. how to add $1,000

  130. to your social security check.

  131. And I love the wording of that

  132. because that plays into exactly how I feel.

  133. Because my expectations are here

  134. and reality is here.

  135. And something has happened

  136. and I need a quick fix in my life.

  137. I need a weird trick.

  138. Because what's so cool is it's weird.

  139. Like no one knows how it works.

  140. It's weird.

  141. And it's a trick.

  142. I don't know how tricks work.

  143. They just work.

  144. And that's what I want.

  145. That's what I want for my life.

  146. I want a weird trick.

  147. I love you when they say things like,

  148. here's a ridiculously easy trick

  149. insurance companies don't want you to know about.

  150. And so here we are.

  151. I need a quick fix.

  152. I need something that bridges the gap

  153. between my expectations and reality.

  154. But who can blame us?

  155. I mean, who can blame us?

  156. I mean, because life takes all kinds of turns

  157. and things happen.

  158. And who can blame us

  159. that we would want a quick trick,

  160. a weird trick to fix it.

  161. Because we live in a broken world.

  162. Genesis tells us the story of how that happened.

  163. And then the repercussions of the fall

  164. of our parents, Adam and Eve.

  165. And the repercussions were that work

  166. is going to be hard.

  167. What we do is going to be difficult.

  168. Right?

  169. I mean, the economy turns

  170. and we lose our jobs.

  171. It's just difficult.

  172. It's hard.

  173. And making money and buying things is hard.

  174. And then relationships are affected.

  175. All of our relationships are hard.

  176. When you're married, it's difficult.

  177. And you're getting along with your neighbor

  178. and the people at work.

  179. And it's just so hard.

  180. And I need a weird trick.

  181. I need something to fix this.

  182. I need a life hack.

  183. But here's the thing.

  184. The Bible is not a collection of life hacks.

  185. It's not a collection of weird tricks

  186. on how to avoid pain and struggle in life.

  187. In fact, it's the opposite.

  188. Jesus, when he was saying

  189. after his triumphal entry,

  190. you know, unless you die,

  191. unless you die,

  192. unless, see, the way up is down.

  193. And so the Bible is not a collection

  194. of weird tricks,

  195. you know, life hacks.

  196. Although,

  197. it's full of resources.

  198. I mean, that bring life

  199. as we go through this broken world.

  200. Brings perspective.

  201. It brings life.

  202. Resources.

  203. Gospel resources.

  204. That's kind of even a strange

  205. sort of terminology there.

  206. But here's the thing.

  207. We're going to look at

  208. one thing this morning.

  209. It's in our passage.

  210. It's one thing.

  211. Just one,

  212. I don't know,

  213. life hack.

  214. It's trust.

  215. Because when

  216. your expectations are here,

  217. reality's here

  218. and that gap in between.

  219. And you,

  220. you know,

  221. Jesus said

  222. as he rode in on the donkey,

  223. I am king.

  224. That's what he was saying.

  225. I'm king.

  226. Yet a week later,

  227. a year later,

  228. Caesar was still king, right?

  229. But we know

  230. Jesus is king

  231. because when my expectations

  232. are here

  233. and reality is here,

  234. I have to believe

  235. he's king

  236. even when it doesn't feel

  237. like he's king.

  238. And that's where trust

  239. comes in.

  240. Let's read the passage

  241. this morning

  242. and then we'll pray.

  243. Proverbs 3, 5, and 6.

  244. Trust in the Lord

  245. with all your heart

  246. and lean not

  247. on your own understanding.

  248. In all your ways

  249. acknowledge him

  250. and he will make your,

  251. and he will make straight

  252. your paths.

  253. Let's pray.

  254. Father,

  255. we need to see Jesus

  256. this morning

  257. just as the Greeks asked.

  258. Lord, show us Jesus.

  259. Take us to the cross.

  260. Blaze a trail

  261. that so that we end up

  262. before the face of Jesus

  263. to look into his face.

  264. And Father,

  265. know that he's king

  266. even when it doesn't feel like it.

  267. Teach us to trust.

  268. Show us that truth

  269. this morning.

  270. We pray in Christ's name.

  271. Amen.

  272. Amen.

  273. All right.

  274. So, very quickly again,

  275. we're on a journey

  276. through a broken world.

  277. It's hard.

  278. Things are hard now.

  279. Very difficult.

  280. And we're on that journey

  281. through it.

  282. And it goes all the way back

  283. to our parents.

  284. So, we're born

  285. with a bent away from God.

  286. We're born in sin.

  287. We're sinners.

  288. That's how we're born.

  289. And we need to be rescued.

  290. And so, everything about us

  291. wants everything except God.

  292. And then, even as we're transformed

  293. and given new hearts,

  294. that battle still rages in us.

  295. We want things our way.

  296. And it's difficult

  297. in a broken world.

  298. And so,

  299. we have to go back

  300. and to think on,

  301. well, why were we created?

  302. What picture do we have in Genesis?

  303. And that picture in Genesis

  304. is that God wants to be with us.

  305. He wants a relationship with us.

  306. And so, we read and see

  307. the picture that's painted there.

  308. And in fact,

  309. we have the imagery

  310. of God walking with us

  311. in the cool of the day.

  312. Right?

  313. That He wants to be

  314. in relationship with us.

  315. And so, in places

  316. like Deuteronomy,

  317. we have this passage

  318. in Deuteronomy 10,

    Deuteronomy 10:12

  319. verse 12.

  320. And now, Israel,

  321. what does the Lord,

  322. your God,

  323. require of you

  324. but to fear the Lord,

  325. your God,

  326. to walk in all His ways,

  327. to love Him,

  328. to serve the Lord,

  329. your God,

  330. with all your heart

  331. and with all your soul?

  332. Another familiar passage

  333. is Micah 6.8.

  334. He has told you,

  335. O man,

  336. what is good.

  337. And what does the Lord

  338. require of you

  339. but to do justice

  340. and to love kindness

  341. and to walk,

  342. to walk humbly

  343. with your God.

  344. And then Jesus sums up

  345. all the commandments.

  346. He gives the greatest commandment

  347. that we love God

  348. with all of our hearts

  349. and all of our soul

  350. and mind and strength.

  351. So the goal in our life

  352. is to know God,

  353. to walk with Him.

  354. Roy Hessian,

  355. in that great book

  356. on We Would See Jesus,

  357. he even says,

  358. to see God

  359. means to know

  360. and to love

  361. and to walk with Him.

  362. And so that's what

  363. we want to do.

  364. We want to see God.

  365. We want to walk with Him.

  366. We want to walk with Jesus.

  367. In this world

  368. where our expectations

  369. are here,

  370. reality here,

  371. we need to see Jesus.

  372. We need to walk with Him.

  373. We need to have

  374. a relationship with Him.

  375. We need to trust Him.

  376. And we're to trust Him

  377. with all of our heart.

  378. Now, the heart,

  379. imagine God is trying

  380. to describe

  381. how we made us.

  382. And He says that,

  383. you know,

  384. there's all kinds

  385. of parts to us.

  386. And one of the ways

  387. He describes the heart

  388. and then we have emotions.

  389. But our heart

  390. and emotions

  391. are different.

  392. Our heart is the place

  393. where our greatest

  394. commitments and hopes reside.

  395. That's the place

  396. where all of our commitments

  397. and hopes reside.

  398. And so what the passage

  399. in Proverbs says

  400. is we're to love God

  401. with all of our hearts.

  402. With every ounce

  403. of our being,

  404. we're to love God.

  405. We're to place

  406. all of our hope

  407. and trust in Him

  408. because our emotions

  409. come out of that.

  410. So God is to be

  411. the very center

  412. of all of our commitment

  413. and hope.

  414. That's what we're called

  415. to do.

  416. Derek Kidner

  417. in one of the commentaries

  418. painted a picture

  419. of what that word

  420. trust in Hebrew

  421. and there's a lot

  422. of facets to the word

  423. trust and we'll talk

  424. about a different

  425. facet later.

  426. But he gave this idea

  427. of trust as lying

  428. face downward,

  429. helpless,

  430. helplessly face downward.

  431. And I gotta tell you

  432. and I've brought up

  433. an illustration using

  434. our oldest son many times

  435. because Billy,

  436. as a lot of you know,

  437. is autistic.

  438. He's an adult now.

  439. I think I'll get

  440. his age right.

  441. He'll be 23 this year.

  442. And many of you know

  443. when he was 17

  444. he turned violent.

  445. And oh boy,

  446. I know many of you here

  447. know that day well.

  448. And we had to place him

  449. outside the home.

  450. And he's in a group home

  451. for a while

  452. and he's still in a group home.

  453. But in that first group home

  454. and organization,

  455. one of the ways

  456. they were helping him

  457. deal with his violence

  458. and his lashing out

  459. was they had this thing

  460. called a blue mat.

  461. And a blue mat was,

  462. just imagine you're

  463. in elementary school

  464. and you're at gym

  465. and the blue mat

  466. would be the mats

  467. you put on the ground.

  468. It's that sort of foam mat.

  469. And it had a little handle on it

  470. and it could fold in two

  471. and they would carry that

  472. around with them

  473. because when Billy

  474. would begin to act out

  475. they would have to put

  476. the blue mat on the ground

  477. and I watched them do this

  478. a number of times.

  479. They would gently put him

  480. down on the blue mat

  481. face down

  482. and then two workers

  483. would get on either side

  484. of him and hold him down,

  485. helplessly hold him down

  486. until he stopped

  487. wanting his way.

  488. And thanks to my wife Sherry,

  489. she brought that illustration up

  490. and said that that is how

  491. we are to trust

  492. because typically

  493. what we want is our way.

  494. We want our way.

  495. We want things our way.

  496. Our expectations are here

  497. and the reality is usually

  498. down here

  499. and we want our way

  500. and God teaches us to trust

  501. to stop wanting our way

  502. and wanting his way.

  503. So that's what we're called to do.

  504. To trust in the Lord

  505. with all your hearts,

  506. not wanting your way,

  507. but we're to lean on

  508. and we're to put all of our weight,

  509. not on our understanding,

  510. but on the understanding of God.

  511. In Proverbs,

  512. any understanding,

  513. any wisdom

  514. is not true understanding

  515. apart from God.

  516. And so our challenge is

  517. we always want to lean on

  518. our little thimble full

  519. of understanding

  520. when we stand before

  521. a vast ocean

  522. of God's understanding

  523. because our expectations are here

  524. and what God wants

  525. is usually right here

  526. and there's a huge difference.

  527. and if I lean on my understanding,

  528. I can get bitter.

  529. If I lean on my understanding,

  530. I can get angry.

  531. I can start to find

  532. other ways out,

  533. looking for a quick fix,

  534. a weird trick,

  535. a life hack

  536. to get out of whatever mess I'm in.

  537. But I have to lean on

  538. how God sees it

  539. and his understanding.

  540. Here's a great quote.

  541. If God were small enough

  542. to be understood,

  543. he wouldn't be big enough

  544. to be worshipped.

  545. Amen on that.

  546. If he was small enough

  547. to be understood,

  548. he wouldn't be big enough

  549. to be worshipped.

  550. So we need to fall on our face

  551. on a blue mat

  552. before the vast ocean

  553. of God's understanding.

  554. Let me ask you this then.

  555. What's next?

  556. What do we do then after that?

  557. How do we get up

  558. off the blue mat?

  559. Well, it says in the passage

  560. we're to acknowledge him.

  561. That simply means to know him,

  562. to have a deep relationship

  563. with God,

  564. to know him.

  565. It's a personal knowledge.

  566. We're aware of the other person.

  567. And it's just like

  568. your relationships,

  569. just like our relationships.

  570. Oh man,

  571. I wish I could go back

  572. in time now

  573. because I was able to do

  574. as a pastor

  575. a lot of marriage counseling.

  576. And those poor people

  577. that I counseled early on,

  578. I just want to go back

  579. and like,

  580. can they do a do-over?

  581. Because I would think

  582. I could help

  583. a little better now

  584. with marriage issues.

  585. And here's what I would say

  586. about that.

  587. Here's what I would do differently.

  588. And I'll put it this way.

  589. If you're maybe

  590. going to go into

  591. marriage counseling,

  592. maybe with one of the pastors here

  593. or with a therapist,

  594. here's what you need to do.

  595. Promise me you'll do.

  596. If you walk into

  597. this initial meeting

  598. and the first thing

  599. out of that counselor

  600. or pastor's mouth is,

  601. and they say,

  602. who wants to begin?

  603. Just get up and leave.

  604. Because what they're saying is,

  605. who wants to start

  606. complaining first?

  607. That's not what you want to hear.

  608. Here's what I would recommend

  609. that you would try

  610. to listen for.

  611. And here's what I will do

  612. as well if you come to me.

  613. Is I will ask you,

  614. before we find out

  615. what's concerning you,

  616. I'll ask you

  617. to start talking about

  618. what was it like

  619. when you first met.

  620. Tell me what it was like

  621. when you first saw her.

  622. How did you feel?

  623. And then that person

  624. could say,

  625. well, wow.

  626. First time I saw her,

  627. oh, I just thought,

  628. it's beautiful.

  629. Then we started to talk.

  630. She was so smart,

  631. funny,

  632. and her laugh was cute.

  633. And then the wife could say,

  634. oh, I remember

  635. when I first saw him.

  636. And yes, handsome

  637. and rugged.

  638. And Sherry says,

  639. you know,

  640. I was wearing

  641. these little tight red shorts.

  642. And she reminds me.

  643. This is the day

  644. when gym shorts were tight,

  645. like that.

  646. And because then

  647. after that happens,

  648. then the counselor can go,

  649. okay, now tell me,

  650. what concern has brought

  651. you here today?

  652. You see what's going on?

  653. I mean, there's part of it

  654. on a practical level.

  655. You can't stay mad

  656. at somebody

  657. when you're remembering

  658. things about them.

  659. But we're to remember.

  660. The way,

  661. your relationship

  662. will grow with each other

  663. as you remember

  664. how you met,

  665. what you've been through,

  666. all those things

  667. you've got to remember.

  668. That's how you develop

  669. a relationship

  670. just among people.

  671. And one other little thing, too,

  672. I would tell couples

  673. you need rituals.

  674. You need things

  675. you do on a regular basis.

  676. It could be like

  677. a Tuesday night

  678. pastry and coffee.

  679. Something that you do

  680. on a regular basis.

  681. That's how we know God, too.

  682. If you look at a lot

  683. of the Psalms,

  684. they begin with

  685. the psalmist

  686. remembering things

  687. about God,

  688. remembering how

  689. and what he brought

  690. you through.

  691. Remember what he's done.

  692. And so as we have

  693. a relationship with God,

  694. we open his word

  695. and we remember

  696. what he's done

  697. from start to finish,

  698. you know,

  699. from Genesis to Revelation,

  700. what he's done

  701. for us,

  702. how he came after,

  703. how much he loved us,

  704. how much his heart

  705. is after us,

  706. what he's done

  707. to come after us.

  708. That's how we develop

  709. a relationship with God.

  710. We remember

  711. what he's done

  712. and we think on it

  713. and we delight in it,

  714. in his word.

  715. And then you have rituals

  716. where, you know,

  717. regular time with God,

  718. doing that remembering,

  719. regular time

  720. with God and his word

  721. and with his people.

  722. Right?

  723. Spending time with him,

  724. spending time with others,

  725. with people.

  726. That's how he grows us.

  727. That's how we get

  728. into relationship with him.

  729. So trust in the Lord

  730. with all your heart.

  731. Lean not on your understanding,

  732. but in all your ways,

  733. know him.

  734. Know him.

  735. All right,

  736. so there you go.

  737. What's the next thing

  738. we're supposed to do?

  739. Well,

  740. if we are to trust him,

  741. not ourselves,

  742. we do it by knowing him.

  743. The next thing that we're called

  744. to do in this passage

  745. is relax.

  746. I don't know if you saw it in there,

  747. but it's relax.

  748. Because the next part of this

  749. is it says,

  750. he will make straight your paths.

  751. There's a lot of work

  752. that leads up to the relaxing.

  753. You know,

  754. you spend time in the Word,

  755. spend time with others,

  756. you think about him,

  757. you remember,

  758. you remember all these things,

  759. but he causes us to relax.

  760. Why?

  761. Because he's got it.

  762. There's an old Portuguese proverb

  763. that says that

  764. God writes straight

  765. with a crooked line.

  766. You know what that crooked line is?

  767. It's the hardship,

  768. it's the world,

  769. the broken world we live in.

  770. We're called to walk

  771. that crooked path

  772. that God has written for us.

  773. We're to believe

  774. and to trust him

  775. in that time,

  776. whatever he's called us to.

  777. Your expectations are here,

  778. reality's down here.

  779. Trust him.

  780. Relax.

  781. It's hard to do,

  782. but it's what he calls us to do.

  783. Relax.

  784. Okay.

  785. Why is trust

  786. a life hack

  787. or a weird trick?

  788. Why is trust?

  789. Why do we need it?

  790. Very often,

  791. the broken creation,

  792. especially with fallen people like us,

  793. we get to that place

  794. where we wonder

  795. where God is.

  796. Listen, y'all,

  797. since leaving here,

  798. the past two and a half years

  799. has been hard.

  800. It's been one of the hardest things

  801. that Sherry and I

  802. have ever walked through.

  803. I never thought

  804. I would not,

  805. I'm going to do a double negative.

  806. I always thought

  807. I'd be in ministry

  808. from always from on,

  809. from the time

  810. I went off the seminary

  811. until I wasn't,

  812. until I went on to glory.

  813. I always thought

  814. I'd be in ministry.

  815. And boom,

  816. all of a sudden I wasn't.

  817. And I can tell you

  818. I needed a quick fix.

  819. I needed a life hack.

  820. I needed a weird trick.

  821. I needed some button

  822. I could push

  823. to fix it.

  824. But what God gave me

  825. was Him.

  826. Every day,

  827. trusting Him.

  828. Every day,

  829. believing that He is

  830. writing straight lines,

  831. even though it looks crooked

  832. from my vantage point.

  833. I'm telling you,

  834. there's life there.

  835. And if any of you

  836. are going through

  837. whatever it is,

  838. you just wonder,

  839. is God king?

  840. Is Jesus king?

  841. Doesn't feel like He is,

  842. but He is.

  843. Trust is a call

  844. on our lives

  845. to believe Him,

  846. to be face down

  847. and not won our way

  848. on the blue map.

  849. There's life there,

  850. I can tell you.

  851. There's life there.

  852. That's what we need.

  853. And so our response

  854. is always to be

  855. to trust Him.

  856. Jesus is king.

  857. May not feel like He's king.

  858. He's king.

  859. He's bringing,

  860. making all things new.

  861. And we can believe that.

  862. We can trust it.

  863. And so we're to work

  864. on our relationship with God.

  865. That's what we're called to do.

  866. That's what this passage says.

  867. Trust in the Lord

  868. with all your heart.

  869. Everything about you.

  870. Work on it.

  871. Really know Him.

  872. And then we're called to relax,

  873. to trust the Lord.

  874. But here's the problem,

  875. and I'm going to close with this.

  876. There's a problem here.

  877. And the problem is this.

  878. We can't trust Him like that.

  879. Now the type A's in the room,

  880. you can go a lot longer than I can.

  881. If I were just to tell you,

  882. now go trust Jesus.

  883. Now we're going to give you

  884. a rah-rah speech,

  885. and we run out of here.

  886. The type A's are going to be able

  887. to trust Him way longer

  888. than the type F's like me

  889. or whatever the worst type there is.

  890. Because the challenge really is

  891. there was only one who did trust,

  892. like Proverbs calls it to.

  893. There was only one who trusted like this.

  894. Because here's the challenge.

  895. Even in a church

  896. where you can feel like

  897. we're all shiny, happy people,

  898. everything's good,

  899. everything's going great.

  900. It's just not the truth.

  901. And you can hear from somebody

  902. to say, well, remember what Bill said,

  903. just trust the Lord,

  904. and it can sound trite.

  905. Unless, unless,

  906. we also say,

  907. but remember that Jesus

  908. is the one who trusted,

  909. who truly trusted.

  910. You're called to trust.

  911. You and I are called to trust.

  912. No doubt.

  913. But we have to remember

  914. Jesus is the one who trusted

  915. like we were supposed to have.

  916. There is a one facet

  917. of the word trust in Hebrew.

  918. The root word has all these derivatives

  919. that are the opposite of trust.

  920. It means that you're sort of,

  921. the root,

  922. some of the words that are derived from it

  923. have this idea that

  924. the person that you're trusting

  925. is deceitful.

  926. And I love that imagery

  927. because there's only one place

  928. we should put all of our trust.

  929. Our heart should only have,

  930. be putting our trust in one place,

  931. not anywhere else.

  932. Not in our jobs,

  933. not in ministry positions,

  934. not in anything else.

  935. But it's only in Jesus.

  936. And that's what we,

  937. we're like the Greeks.

  938. Let us see Jesus.

  939. Show us Jesus.

  940. Let's do that.

  941. Because the question we want to ask

  942. when our expectations are here

  943. and reality's here

  944. and we're scared

  945. and we don't know

  946. what's going to happen next.

  947. We don't know if we're going to,

  948. if marriage is going to make it.

  949. We don't know if,

  950. man, my job's going to last any longer.

  951. We're scared.

  952. We're afraid.

  953. Because life is hard

  954. and our relationships are affected

  955. and we don't know

  956. how we're going to fix those.

  957. And the weird tricks

  958. are all been worked through.

  959. Right?

  960. What do we do?

  961. Can we believe that God's there?

  962. Can we believe Him?

  963. Yes.

  964. Because we see Jesus trusting.

  965. Later on this week, right?

  966. On Thursday night,

  967. I got my nights right.

  968. He's in the garden.

  969. He's praying.

  970. We see Jesus trusting there

  971. because here's the deal.

  972. Jesus lived the perfect life of trust

  973. that you and I could never live

  974. given a million opportunities.

  975. He lived that perfect life.

  976. He died the death

  977. that you and I deserved.

  978. And as He,

  979. on the night before,

  980. He was betrayed

  981. and knowing what was before Him.

  982. It says this.

  983. And Jesus knew

  984. He was going to drink the cup

  985. of His Father's wrath.

  986. The wrath that was deserved,

  987. you and me.

  988. Jesus knew He was going to drink this.

  989. And He knew that it meant

  990. that He was going to be sent

  991. from the Father's presence

  992. and experience pain,

  993. the depths of pain,

  994. you and I can only barely imagine.

  995. And this is what it says

  996. in Matthew 26.

  997. And going a little further,

  998. He fell on His face

  999. and prayed,

  1000. saying,

  1001. Father,

  1002. if it be possible,

1003. let this cup pass from me.

  1004. Nevertheless,

  1005. there it is.

  1006. I don't know.

  1007. Is this heretical?

  1008. But I picture Jesus

  1009. on the blue mat

  1010. saying,

  1011. I don't want my way.

1012. I can trust you, Father.

1013. I will walk this horrible path

1014. because of the joy set before me.

  1015. I'll do it.

  1016. And here's the deal.

  1017. He had your life

1018. and my life in mind.

1019. And He still did it.

  1020. That's crazy.

1021. He did that for me

1022. and He knew what a mess

1023. I would make of my life.

  1024. He still did it.

  1025. He's trusting the Father.

  1026. He's trusting the Father

  1027. to raise Him.

  1028. He's trusting the Father

1029. that this will be enough.

  1030. It'll be finished.

  1031. There is the trust.

1032. And He did it for you and me.

  1033. He can be trusted.

  1034. The life that God

  1035. is scribbling for you,

1036. it looks like crooked lines.

1037. And He asks you to walk it.

  1038. And it's painful

  1039. and it hurts

  1040. and you wonder,

1041. are you king or not?

1042. And He asks you to walk it.

1043. We just need to remember

  1044. and look at Jesus

  1045. how He trusted

  1046. and know

  1047. it's worth it.

1048. It's going to be okay.

  1049. He's got it.

  1050. We can trust

1051. because Jesus knew the Father.

  1052. He knew the Father.

  1053. With a love

  1054. so great as this

1055. that Jesus had for the Father

1056. and the Father had for Jesus,

  1057. we see it.

1058. We see what Jesus did for us.

  1059. We remember.

  1060. We lean on that.

  1061. We trust in that.

1062. We don't want our way.

  1063. We want Jesus' way.

1064. We want the Father's way.

1065. With love so great as this,

1066. that Jesus would lay down

  1067. His life for us.

  1068. With such great love

  1069. between the Father

  1070. and the Son,

1071. that trust flowed so deep

1072. from the heart of Jesus.

1073. How can we not trust

  1074. the Father

  1075. to make

  1076. your crooked path straight?

  1077. the pain

  1078. that you're walking through,

  1079. the hardship

  1080. that you're in,

  1081. the difficulty.

1082. He can make it straight

1083. and He's making it straight.

  1084. He can be trusted.

1085. And so we can get up

  1086. off the blue mat

  1087. and start walking

  1088. with Him

  1089. on that crooked path

  1090. with hope.

  1091. Absolute hope.

1092. He will direct your paths.

  1093. Relax.

  1094. He will make them

  1095. straight and smooth.

  1096. So trust,

  1097. remember,

  1098. relax.

  1099. Trust,

  1100. it's not a weird trick.

  1101. It's not a life hack.

  1102. Trust is a person.

  1103. It's the gospel.

  1104. It's Jesus.

  1105. Amen?

  1106. Let's pray.

  1107. Heavenly Father,

  1108. my expectations

  1109. in reality,

1110. they hardly ever match up.

  1111. And so,

  1112. Father,

  1113. thank You for that.

  1114. I thank You

  1115. for the past

1116. two and a half years.

  1117. Lord,

  1118. thank You.

  1119. The straight path

  1120. that You're working out.

1121. It looks crooked to me,

  1122. but Father,

  1123. I look to Jesus

  1124. and I see

  1125. the glory.

  1126. I see Your glory

  1127. in His face.

  1128. Father,

  1129. take me

1130. no further than the cross

1131. and no higher than His feet ever.

  1132. Continue to teach me,

  1133. teach us,

  1134. to trust You,

  1135. to place our hope

  1136. only in You,

  1137. the author and finisher

  1138. of our faith.

  1139. Lord,

  1140. we thank You

  1141. for this message.

  1142. Lord,

  1143. we thank You

  1144. for the message

1145. of the gospel of grace.

  1146. In Christ's name,

  1147. Amen.

  1151. Thank you.

  1152. Thank you.

  1153. Thank you.

  1154. Thank you.

  1155. Thank you.
