  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. You may have heard of the late Stephen Covey.

  4. Covey was a really successful businessman, a big author, best-selling author,

  5. and a very well-respected guy in the self-help industry.

  6. He wrote books like Seven Habits of Highly Successful People.

  7. That may ring a bell.

  8. It's been adapted for organizations, for schools, for individuals of all ages.

  9. Lots of wonderful advice in there.

  10. One of the things that Covey says in that book, one of his bits of wisdom,

  11. is the main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing.

  12. If you write it out, it looks like the mess at the top of your bulletin that doesn't look like a word.

  13. That's pretty good advice.

  14. Find out what's important, what your priorities are,

  15. and then make sure they're treated as priorities, like things that are really important, right?

  16. It's a great bit of advice.

  17. The challenge with it, I find, is that figuring out what's important can be so difficult.

  18. There's just so much these days.

  19. Priorities are so hard.

  20. There's so much going on in my life.

  21. When I try to figure out, okay, let's just make a list.

  22. What are the important things I need to be doing?

  23. And marriage, and work, and kids, and church, and hobbies, and friendships, and volunteering.

  24. They all seem so important that they seem to crowd the list.

  25. And don't forget to sleep and exercise, because you should take care of yourself.

  26. That's important too, right?

  27. Culture tells us priorities should be things like comfort and ease.

  28. Fame, success, power, control.

  29. And we work really hard for those things.

  30. And then you're in a city like Huntsville with churches all over the place, right?

  31. And so you've heard messages from churches, from religious institutions, what they say

  32. should be really important.

  33. You've heard them say that the main thing is personal morality.

  34. Things you should not do, like don't smoke, or drink, or chew, or go with girls who do.

  35. That's really important.

  36. Don't do those things.

  37. Or on the other hand, do some really important things, like go to church.

  38. Read your Bible, pray.

  39. You've heard that as something that is of utmost importance.

  40. From other churches, you may have heard messages more of social or corporate morality.

  41. Be pro-life.

  42. Be Republican.

  43. Be pro-Israel.

  44. Or on the other hand, perhaps be tolerant.

  45. Be inclusive.

  46. Be benevolent.

  47. Those are the most important things.

  48. So we've heard all sorts of messages about what's really important, about what the main

  49. thing is.

  50. So the main thing may well be to keep the main thing the main thing, but in the muddle of

  51. our lives and all those voices telling us what's so important, that may not actually help us

  52. a lot.

  53. It may not clear much up.

  54. What really matters for me, for my family, for all of life?

  55. And God's Word makes that clear for us in the passage we will read this morning.

  56. In no uncertain terms, the Apostle Paul, writing to the church in Corinth, tells us the message

  57. we should be hearing from churches as the main thing.

  58. We'll see, it's actually remarkably good news.

  59. This is 1 Corinthians chapter 15.

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  60. It's Paul's classic writing on the resurrection of Jesus.

  61. We're going to start reading at verse 3.

  62. This is God's Word.

  63. In a world of promises that fail you, the thing you can count on.

  64. In a world where things fade, the thing that lasts.

  65. In a world of imperfections, the perfect Word of God.

  66. Paul writes,

  67. For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for

  68. our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that He was buried, that He was raised on the

  69. third day in accordance with the Scriptures, and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the

  70. twelve.

  71. Then He appeared to more than 500 brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though

  72. some have fallen asleep.

  73. Will you pray with me?

  74. Father, thank You for these words, these words of life.

  75. Thank You that they're unlike any other that we hear today.

  76. We will hear in the next few minutes the words of a dying man, but we need to hear this morning

  77. the words of the living God.

  78. We need to hear from You.

  79. And so, Father, would You speak to us clearly this morning?

  80. That's what would make a difference in our lives.

  81. We didn't come merely to be entertained.

  82. We don't want simply to be happy for a few moments and then go about our way.

  83. We would ask that You would speak to us.

  84. That we would meet the living God and be different forever because of that.

  85. Would You do that in this time that we have together?

  86. Speak through Your Word, we ask in Jesus' name.

  87. Amen.

  88. Amen.

  89. Okay, so what's the main thing?

  90. What's the main thing here?

  91. One of the first things you notice when you read this passage, it says that there's something

  92. of first importance, right?

  93. Something that is the main thing Paul's going to remind the Corinthians is the essence of

  94. Christianity, the basis of life.

  95. The thing you notice is that it's about what God has done rather than what we do.

  96. Look at the passage.

  97. What's of first importance in this passage?

  98. That Christ died.

  99. That He was buried.

  100. That He was raised.

  101. That He appeared.

  102. Over and over, this passage says what's most important, what's of first importance is Jesus'

  103. performance, not yours.

  104. The whole list is His.

  105. Maybe you've missed that and what you've heard or perceived from churches before.

  106. Or we're often so loud on the messages of personal or social morality that I mentioned earlier

  107. that we muffle what God intended to be the clarion call of the church.

  108. Christ has conquered.

  109. Christianity is about what He has done for you, not about what you do for Him.

  110. The main thing is not how well you've performed religious duties, how correctly you've voted,

  111. how successfully you've balanced a full plate of responsibilities.

  112. The main thing is that Jesus has performed perfectly, that He has done everything that

  113. was necessary.

  114. So you can exhale for a minute this morning.

  115. Before we even dive into any details, that's the good news.

  116. He's carrying the load.

  117. What is it exactly that Jesus did that was so important?

  118. What does this passage tell us?

  119. Paul summarizes it in these verses with two primary events.

  120. Two primary things Jesus did and they each have a special confirmation of their reality

  121. attached to them.

  122. The first is Jesus' death.

  123. Look at verse 3.

  124. Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures.

  125. Jesus went to the cross.

  126. We've considered that this week.

  127. He suffered the pain and the agony there of a cruel death.

  128. The wrath of God being poured out on Him on the cross.

  129. And why did He do it?

  130. Why does it say He died?

  131. It says, for our sins.

  132. You may notice this is actually the one time that our actions come into the of first importance

  133. list.

  134. Our sins.

  135. That's where we make it in.

  136. Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures.

  137. There's a lot of Scriptures that talk about that.

  138. One of the most beautiful places in the Old Testament where we read of Christ dying for

  139. our sins is Isaiah chapter 53.

    Isaiah 53 chapter mention

  140. Let me read you just a portion of it.

  141. It says,

  142. Surely He has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows.

  143. Yet we esteemed Him stricken, smitten by God and afflicted.

  144. But He was pierced for our transgressions.

  145. He was crushed for our iniquities.

  146. Upon Him was the chastisement that brought us peace.

  147. And with His wounds, we are healed.

  148. All we like sheep have gone astray.

  149. We have turned everyone to His own way.

  150. And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.

  151. Do you hear what's happening there in that passage?

  152. All our punishment laid on Him.

  153. Everything we deserved, He takes.

  154. You see, the amazing thing about those five little words,

  155. Christ died for our sins,

  156. is that died and sins go together.

  157. You should often see them in the same sentence.

  158. That's exactly what has always been true of sin,

  159. that it deserved death.

  160. A holy God must punish sin.

  161. The punishment for sin against a holy God is death.

  162. From the beginning it has been.

  163. Someone must die.

  164. The glory of these words,

  165. and you can see it, this is not complicated,

  166. is what we just read in Isaiah 53.

  167. Everything we deserved, He takes.

  168. Christ died for our sins.

  169. That's the part that is not supposed to be that way.

  170. We should die for our sins,

  171. but Christ does instead.

  172. Picture the judge coming out from behind His gavel,

  173. having cast the guilty verdict.

  174. And yet, before He reads the sentence,

  175. He steps out from behind the gavel

  176. and takes the place of the convict

  177. and says,

  178. I'll take the sentence that's due Him.

  179. That's what happens.

  180. The just judge says,

  181. sin deserves death.

  182. And then He says,

  183. but I'll be the one who takes it,

  184. not you.

  185. Amazing.

  186. Amazing that He would do that for our sins.

  187. And Jesus really died.

  188. Really, truly died.

  189. The confirmation of that in this passage,

  190. of course, is His burial.

  191. Jesus' burial is mentioned.

  192. Having been confirmed dead on the cross

  193. by Roman soldiers,

  194. He's placed in a tomb

  195. with a large stone in front

  196. and a Roman guard placed in front of it.

  197. He didn't die figuratively.

  198. He really died, Paul is saying,

  199. and He was buried.

  200. And now we make it to Easter.

  201. I know, you're as anxious as I am.

  202. Skip that part.

  203. It's Sunday morning.

  204. Come on.

  205. Let's get to verse 4.

  206. What happens next?

  207. Of course, it's Jesus' resurrection.

  208. Verse 4,

  209. after being in that tomb Friday night,

  210. all day Saturday,

  211. Sunday morning comes,

  212. the stone is rolled away,

  213. and Jesus walks out of the tomb.

  214. He is risen.

  215. And it's of first importance

  216. that this happened, Paul says.

  217. Why is it in the list?

  218. Why is it so important?

  219. I think among other reasons,

  220. because many, many people

  221. in the history of the world

  222. have died and been buried.

  223. Many of them.

  224. There's lists and lists

  225. of those who have died

  226. and been buried

  227. in the history of mankind,

  228. but it's not at all common

  229. to talk about what happens

  230. when someone walks out of the tomb.

  231. If Jesus remained in the grave,

  232. then He's just one more guy

  233. among a long, long list.

  234. One more person

  235. who succumbed to death

  236. in the end.

  237. He may have done

  238. some interesting things,

  239. but if that's the end of it,

  240. He's just like the rest of us.

  241. There's no value to us

  242. in His death

  243. if that's the end.

  244. In fact, Paul will go on

  245. to say in this chapter

  246. that if Jesus didn't rise

  247. from the dead,

  248. we're still in our sins.

  249. The claim that Jesus died

  250. for our sins

  251. that's so wonderful

  252. that we were just talking about,

  253. if He didn't rise from the dead,

  254. it's unhelpful.

  255. It's untrue.

  256. He didn't defeat sin,

  257. death, and the grave for us

  258. if that's the case.

  259. But if sin's just punishment,

  260. death can't hold Jesus,

  261. then He has conquered sin for us.

  262. He's paid our full penalty.

  263. He's risen triumphant.

  264. And the Father says,

  265. yes, I accept that offering.

  266. Sin has been defeated.

  267. So the joy of the resurrection

  268. is that Jesus walked out of the grave

  269. in His glorious body,

  270. conquered sin, death, and the grave,

  271. that now death is being reversed

  272. and life brought in its place

  273. to those who deserved death.

  274. There's hope for us again.

  275. Paul spends the rest of this chapter

  276. talking about how important

  277. the resurrection is,

  278. how it makes all the difference

  279. in the world

  280. if Jesus really did walk out of the tomb.

  281. And He begins by giving confirmation

  282. to this historic event.

  283. He gives Jesus' appearances,

  284. some of them,

  285. listed in verses 5 and 6.

  286. Paul gives names,

  287. eyewitnesses,

  288. numbers of people

  289. who witnessed the same encounter

  290. with a risen Jesus.

  291. And he makes the point of saying

  292. that most of them are still alive.

  293. Go talk to them, he's saying.

  294. Refute this incredible claim

  295. and shut this upstart movement down.

  296. Go talk to these people

  297. and see if they are just making this up,

  298. if they all have different stories.

  299. Or join in with Jews, Romans.

  300. Pick anybody there

  301. who'd love to produce his body

  302. and end this crazy movement

  303. that's driving them mad.

  304. All those in power,

  305. when it stopped,

  306. go do that.

  307. You can talk to them.

  308. Unless, of course,

  309. as you talk to one witness

  310. after another,

  311. you find it to be credible

  312. and true.

  313. Jesus' appearances

  314. are meant to confirm

  315. that He really rose from the dead.

  316. Just like He really died,

  317. that He really rose from the dead,

  318. that that's the most important event

  319. in human history.

  320. But they're meant to do

  321. something else too, I think.

  322. His appearances begin to confirm

  323. some of the personal impact

  324. of the resurrection.

  325. Look at the first name in the list.

  326. You may not recognize it.

  327. It says Cephas.

  328. It's a strange name.

  329. That's Peter.

  330. That's Peter,

  331. the one who denied Jesus

  332. three times.

  333. His disciple who,

  334. in his leader's

  335. greatest moment of need,

  336. in the big game,

  337. Peter lets him down.

  338. Peter fails.

  339. Peter denies Jesus.

  340. And after His resurrection,

  341. Jesus' appearance to Peter

  342. is like many of His appearances

  343. to people.

  344. He meets people

  345. right where they are.

  346. And the fact that He's risen

  347. changes everything.

  348. It changes everything

  349. for Peter.

  350. He's no longer defined

  351. as a failure,

  352. as one who's let Jesus down

  353. because when a risen Jesus

  354. walks out of the tomb,

  355. Jesus is one without Peter's help.

  356. Peter may have failed

  357. in the big game,

  358. but Jesus conquered.

  359. He won.

  360. And so now,

  361. rather than being defined

  362. as a failure,

  363. He's reinstated as a friend

  364. and a leader,

  365. as one Jesus loves.

  366. Jesus meets Thomas

  367. in his doubts

  368. and says,

  369. touch my hands

  370. and my side.

  371. See and believe.

  372. The resurrected Jesus

  373. changes everything

  374. for Thomas,

  375. doesn't He?

  376. Jesus meets a woman

  377. named Mary

  378. in the garden

  379. just outside the tomb.

  380. She's fearful.

  381. She's grieving.

  382. She's uncertain

  383. about the future.

  384. Her Lord,

  385. the one she followed

  386. is gone.

  387. She doesn't know

  388. what's coming next.

  389. And Jesus calls her by name.

  390. He says,

  391. Mary.

  392. Mary.

  393. Don't be afraid.

  394. I'm alive.

  395. I'm here.

  396. The resurrected Jesus

  397. changes everything

  398. for Mary.

  399. I don't know what each of you

  400. is facing this morning.

  401. I'm sure that there are

  402. those here who are

  403. struggling with failures,

  404. ashamed of things you've done.

  405. Those who are struggling

  406. with doubts.

  407. Certainly,

  408. those struggling with

  409. fear and grief

  410. and uncertainty

  411. about the future.

  412. Probably many more emotions

  413. and situations

  414. in your life

  415. than that.

  416. I couldn't possibly

  417. know them all.

  418. But I can tell you,

  419. the resurrected Jesus

  420. lives

  421. to meet you there.

  422. To call you by name.

  423. To remind you

  424. that because

  425. He lives,

  426. everything changes.

  427. You don't have to be afraid.

  428. He reigns over all

  429. and protects you.

  430. You can trust Him.

  431. You aren't defined

  432. by your mistakes.

  433. Even your bad ones.

  434. Even the ones

  435. you wouldn't admit

  436. to anybody

  437. this morning.

  438. He died for sins.

  439. Conquered sin.

  440. You're welcomed

  441. into His family

  442. whether you have

  443. a religious resume

  444. you're proud of

  445. or not.

  446. What He has done

  447. far outweighs

  448. what you do.

  449. See,

  450. the implications

  451. of the resurrection

  452. are intensely personal

  453. like that.

  454. Easter really does

  455. change everything.

  456. Easter cannot be

  457. merely a footnote.

  458. It either changes

  459. everything

  460. or nothing at all.

  461. Claiming that someone

  462. died and then

  463. walked bodily

  464. out of the tomb

  465. is not just

  466. oh well that would be

  467. nice I wonder

  468. we ought to go

  469. think about that

  470. occasionally.

  471. It's not an event

  472. with a one day a year

  473. kind of impact.

  474. It can't fit

  475. that category.

  476. Either it is

  477. an absolute fairy tale

  478. that shouldn't matter

  479. at all

  480. or it changes

  481. every moment

  482. of every day.

  483. It's of first

  484. importance.

  485. That's what Paul

  486. means when he says

  487. these are matters

  488. of first importance.

  489. that it's a matter

  490. of life and death.

  491. Issues of

  492. eternal significance.

  493. Because Christ

  494. has indeed

  495. been raised

  496. from the dead.

  497. Amen?

  498. He has.

  499. Because that's true

  500. Easter changes

  501. everything

  502. for all of us.

  503. For all of us.

  504. Not just

  505. those who are

  506. considering Jesus

  507. for the first time.

  508. Not just the

  509. first moment

  510. we trust Jesus

  511. but

  512. every moment

  513. of every day

  514. for all of us.

  515. the resurrection

  516. remains

  517. of prime importance.

  518. Paul says this

  519. in verse 1

  520. before what we read.

  521. He says now

  522. I would remind you

  523. brothers of the gospel

  524. I preached to you.

  525. The gospel you received

  526. at first

  527. and also

  528. the gospel

  529. in which you now stand.

  530. The same one.

  531. That's how he sets up

  532. this list

  533. of first importance.

  534. The thing you first heard

  535. when I came to you

  536. that was so important

  537. I had to tell you

  538. and it hasn't changed.

  539. It's still

  540. what's so important.

  541. That's

  542. the gospel.

  543. The good news

  544. is what you receive

  545. and

  546. now

  547. stand in.

  548. It continues

  549. to shape

  550. every day.

  551. Easter speaks

  552. into every

  553. situation.

  554. So what does that

  555. look like

  556. Will?

  557. What do you mean

  558. Easter can't be

  559. a mere

  560. footnote

  561. but

  562. instead

  563. it changes

  564. everything?

  565. How is the

  566. gospel

  567. the good news

  568. of Jesus'

  569. life

  570. death

  571. and resurrection

  572. the most important

  573. reality

  574. in every moment?

  575. What does that

  576. look like?

  577. I want to admit

  578. to you

  579. before I explain it

  580. that this passage

  581. was written

  582. pre-Iron Bowl.

  583. Okay

  584. and that is

  585. true

  586. and I know

  587. that's a really

  588. important

  589. event

  590. at least

  591. once a year

  592. but I also

  593. want to tell you

  594. I don't think

  595. God's unclear

  596. on what's

  597. most important.

  598. I don't think

  599. it would change

  600. how Paul

  601. put the list

  602. together

  603. because it's

  604. not all the

  605. temporary

  606. passing priorities

  607. that we give

  608. our time

  609. and energy

  610. to that are

  611. of first

  612. importance

  613. is it?

  614. They're just

  615. not there

  616. there's no

  617. room for them

  618. on the list

  619. and man

  620. I struggle

  621. with that

  622. because I

  623. honestly feel

  624. like my

  625. agenda

  626. is so

  627. important

  628. I love

  629. schedules

  630. and plans

  631. and the

  632. things I

  633. want to

  634. see happen

  635. and plus

  636. there are

  637. many days

  638. where you

  639. could look

  640. at my

  641. life

  642. and say

  643. I'm pretty

  644. sure if

  645. Clemson

  646. were to win

  647. the national

  648. championship

  649. and may

  650. it indeed

  651. happen one

  652. day

  653. that you'd

  654. look at my

  655. life and think

  656. that would be

  657. the best thing

  658. that could

  659. happen to him

  660. that would be

  661. the most

  662. important thing

  663. that would be

  664. the highlight

  665. of his year

  666. y'all even

  667. saying those

  668. words I feel

  669. the emptiness

  670. of it

  671. that that

  672. would be the

  673. best thing

  674. that could

  675. happen to me

  676. but there's

  677. a long list

  678. of things

  679. that I'd

  680. love to see

  681. happen that

  682. probably more

  683. quickly get on

  684. my list of

  685. what's most

  686. important

  687. but Jesus

  688. resurrection

  689. changes everything

  690. because it

  691. redefines what's

  692. really important

  693. doesn't it

  694. we don't have

  695. to wring

  696. everything out

  697. of this life

  698. anymore

  699. when his

  700. resurrection

  701. promises there's

  702. life beyond

  703. the grave

  704. when you go to

  705. work tomorrow

  706. morning the

  707. ultimate goal

  708. can't be

  709. it can't

  710. possibly be

  711. to make

  712. the most

  713. money or

  714. to accumulate

  715. the most

  716. toys when

  717. there are

  718. eternal riches

  719. offered to

  720. us by a

  721. risen savior

  722. it can't

  723. in your

  724. relationships

  725. this week

  726. the most

  727. important thing

  728. can't be

  729. your fame

  730. your recognition

  731. how well you

  732. fit in how

  733. many people

  734. like you or

  735. your Facebook

  736. picture

  737. if there is

  738. actually eternal

  739. life lasting

  740. success permanent

  741. acceptance

  742. offered to you

  743. by a risen

  744. savior

  745. it changes

  746. that

  747. the most

  748. important things

  749. remember are

  750. are the things

  751. that he has

  752. done

  753. not things we

  754. do

  755. and that

  756. shakes me up

  757. because it

  758. challenges my

  759. natural feelings

  760. that on the list

  761. of most important

  762. things is is being

  763. a perfect parent

  764. because man that

  765. seems important

  766. when you've got

  767. three little kids

  768. making the right

  769. decisions for where

  770. they'll go to

  771. school for figuring

  772. out how to

  773. discipline them

  774. that those many

  775. moments of many

  776. days feel like the

  777. most important

  778. things and listen

  779. Easter the gospel

  780. being of first

  781. importance tells me

  782. my kids need not

  783. merely a good

  784. parent or a right

  785. set of rules but

  786. a righteous risen

  787. savior that's what

  788. they need

  789. this challenges my

  790. natural feelings

  791. that on the list

  792. of most important

  793. things is planning

  794. well for retirement

  795. managing my money

  796. well

  797. listen Easter

  798. the gospel being

  799. of first importance

  800. tells me that if my

  801. heavenly father was

  802. willing to give up

  803. his only son for me

  804. how will he not also

  805. along with him

  806. graciously give me

  807. everything I need

  808. he's got it

  809. what he has done

  810. is most important

  811. not how well I

  812. manage it

  813. it frees me up

  814. it does

  815. there's great freedom

  816. there

  817. Easter frees me up

  818. from the pressure of

  819. performance and

  820. record keeping with

  821. God to invest

  822. deeply in every

  823. aspect of creation

  824. and every person

  825. he puts in my path

  826. for me to love

  827. see it's not that my

  828. job or my family

  829. my finances don't

  830. matter anymore

  831. that's not the

  832. point

  833. it's that I can

  834. approach all of them

  835. differently now is

  836. now that Christ has

  837. taken care of what

  838. matters most

  839. it changes the way I

  840. approach those things

  841. because he has risen

  842. he's remaking all of

  843. his creation isn't he

  844. Jesus is the first

  845. fruits and now he's

  846. remaking our bodies

  847. our relationships

  848. our neighborhoods

  849. hey outer space

  850. he cares about all of

  851. it and we get to

  852. participate in that

  853. every day what I do

  854. matters because it's

  855. not the most important

  856. thing it now has a

  857. place where it does

  858. matter

  859. my daughters have been

  860. trying to convince me

  861. this weekend that we

  862. should keep celebrating

  863. Easter this coming week

  864. I think it's not because

  865. they're so spiritual but

  866. because they really want

  867. to keep eating candy and

  868. playing all of the fun

  869. games together and I'm

  870. actually really okay with

  871. this idea honestly because

  872. the jelly beans that I

  873. put in the Easter eggs

  874. over the next few days

  875. will be ones I got on

  876. clearance and so it

  877. really it's a great idea

  878. I think to to keep

  879. celebrating that that's

  880. something that they would

  881. be excited about and it's

  882. funny to consider and we

  883. probably will do some more

  884. Easter egg hunts through

  885. the week but ask yourself

  886. seriously does Easter change

  887. tomorrow for me is Easter

  888. going to make any difference

  889. the rest of this week is

  890. it going to matter in your

  891. life tomorrow morning when

  892. you wake up doesn't it have

  893. to if it matters at all if

  894. it matters at all in this

  895. moment enough to to come

  896. into a church building then

  897. it has to matter tomorrow

  898. morning we don't have time to

  899. tease out every situation of

  900. life and every occupation

  901. maybe you can do that in

  902. your small groups these

  903. Sunday school classes that

  904. are starting next week I'm

  905. so excited about because

  906. that's what they're going to

  907. do they're actually

  908. specifically designed to

  909. talk about that and what it

  910. looks like in your life but

  911. you get the joy the

  912. privilege of thinking about

  913. what Easter means where God

  914. has you in your life and

  915. I'll be honest it seems so

  916. much easier to me to think

  917. about waking up tomorrow and

  918. just carrying on with life the

  919. way I always have as though

  920. nothing has changed that that's

  921. where the momentum will carry

  922. me it doesn't seem like that'll

  923. take much effort but God says

  924. everything has changed someone

  925. has walked out of a tomb Jesus

  926. walks out of the tomb and says

  927. I'm only the first fruits you too

  928. will live forever this creation is

  929. being remade so face your job your

  930. family your sin struggles your

  931. fear of death your hatred of

  932. brokenness and pain and the world

  933. around you all of that in light of

  934. my resurrection don't forget the

  935. main thing Easter changes everything

  936. and some of us really hate that

  937. about Easter and about Jesus it's one

  938. of the most common complaints about

  939. Christianity from people who don't

  940. believe in Jesus it's it's that

  941. frustration that Jesus messes with

  942. my life and tells me how everything in

  943. my life should be that's a huge

  944. complaint against Christianity and

  945. I'll be honest it's not entirely

  946. untrue but listen there's something

  947. that actually is really significant in

  948. that if you feel that way today or if

  949. you've ever felt that way before and

  950. that's this Jesus doesn't come to you

  951. telling you how to live your life he

  952. comes to you laying down his life for

  953. you and that's a huge difference he

  954. doesn't come and say the first thing I

  955. want to tell you is how to live your

  956. life this is the first thing I want to

  957. do for you is lay my life down for you

  958. that's where it starts that's the

  959. difference between good news and good

  960. advice the main thing is to keep the

  961. main thing the main thing is is good

  962. advice but when the main thing is that

  963. someone else has done everything for

  964. you then it becomes good news that's a

  965. really significant difference because

  966. there's lots of good advice out there

  967. tips on how to handle stress how to find

  968. fulfillment in life how to find success

  969. but good news is something entirely

  970. different good advice by definition

  971. tells you something to do or to do

  972. better good news by definition tells you

  973. something that has already been done

  974. something that has already happened

  975. good advice is don't forget to take your

  976. medication good news is the surgery went

  977. well and you have a clear report good

  978. advice is hang on tight to that life

  979. preserver good news is I've jumped in I'm

  980. here to rescue you Buddha's dying words

  981. were keep on striving now I know most of

  982. you aren't Buddhist but I think that

  983. would work well as a slogan for our

  984. American society wouldn't it just just

  985. try a little bit harder just put your

  986. mind to it learn more you can make it

  987. happen Jesus is dying words where it is

  988. finished it's the difference between your

  989. slogan being just do it and come to me

  990. like Jesus says I've done it it's

  991. finished come to me good news Jesus says

  992. you've messed up miserably you've failed

  993. but I've died for your sins and risen from

  994. the grave to offer you not a second chance

  995. to do it but to give you a new life the

  996. Bible doesn't say because Jesus rose we

  997. better start acting like it and do better

  998. it says because he rose we will rise to to

  999. new life the good news of the gospel there

1000. are a lot of places you can get good advice the

1001. main thing is to keep the main thing the

1002. main thing is is really good advice I hope

1003. you haven't heard good advice this morning I'll

1004. be honest with you I'm just not that smart or

1005. helpful to dispense good advice Jesus offers

1006. you good news he says the main thing is I

1007. died for your sins was buried rose from the

1008. dead to conquer sin and death for you and

1009. appeared to many and my resurrection changes

  1010. everything that's good news let's pray

1011. Jesus could that could that really be true

1012. would the headline that we're reading this

1013. morning really say sins forgiven death

1014. defeated eternal hope daily purpose true

1015. freedom oh thank you thank you that Easter is

1016. good news that it's what you have done for us

1017. that we're not struggling to find our way out

1018. of the grave that you've walked out for us and

1019. now we will to forgive us father we we forget what

1020. is most important we regularly get confused would

1021. you change our hearts would you change our lives as

1022. we begin to consider this message would you change our

1023. neighborhoods and our our workplaces and and this

1024. city because you are alive and at work and that's what's

1025. most important oh Jesus that gives us great hope we don't

1026. feel like we could change even ourselves much less the world but

1027. if you're risen living Savior and King you can and you

1028. would with that great news give us great joy today and tomorrow would it

1029. inspire us to live as you've called us to oh Jesus change us change us may we

1030. never forget the good news of what you've done for us we ask in your name
