  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. It's my privilege this morning to introduce a friend and mentor to you, Stephen Estock.

  4. After serving in the Air Force for a few years, which I know some of you appreciate in particular,

  5. after serving there, he felt a call to vocational ministry and has been a pastor and a leader in our denomination.

  6. He has served Southwood very well. Both of your current pastors interned for him.

  7. I think what he said to me last night was that the three best interns he ever had have come to Southwood.

  8. So, yeah, Jake Patton interned for him and then Chad, and I think that was the way he put it.

  9. He loves Southwood that much.

  10. I hope this is recorded for all of his other interns to hear.

  11. He's also preached here before.

  12. Stephen is currently serving as the director of the PCA's Committee for Discipleship Ministries,

  13. which basically means that he is the absolute best guy in the whole denomination on Christian education and teaching.

  14. So, I'm going to build him up really well for you.

  15. It does mean that he's a gifted teacher and a great leader who shares and connects others to great resources for that.

  16. And so, he has led and served and pastored many people, myself and Chad included.

  17. We're really, really privileged to have him here with us this morning to open God's Word.

  18. He's staying for lunch to teach us at the Telling God's Story lunch.

  19. He and I will be talking with you together.

  20. Please feel free to stay for that across the street at the lodge.

  21. We're delighted to have Stephen Estock.

  22. Thank you.

  23. Thanks, man.

  24. Thank you.

  25. Now, I am disappointed in your introduction, though, Will.

  26. You didn't call me super cute.

  27. And I've got a tie and a suit on and everything.

  28. But I do have a family that's super cute over there.

  29. It is a pleasure to be with you.

  30. A lot of times when I go around part of my position, I travel around the denomination.

  31. I tell people, well, I'm Stephen Estock.

  32. Well, who's he?

  33. I'm with CDM, coordinator for CDM.

  34. And then they say, what's that?

  35. I say, well, maybe you knew us by our old name, Christian Education and Publications.

  36. And still get the blank face.

  37. So what I'd like to do is tell you a little bit about who we are, what we do.

  38. Now, many churches, and I'm sure you're the same, you have a session that governs the church.

  39. And then you have work that's done through different committees, right?

  40. Right?

  41. You can nod.

  42. This is interactive time here.

  43. You have different committees.

  44. You have a missions committee.

  45. You have a worship committee.

  46. Different churches do that.

  47. Well, what we have at the General Assembly level is we have a session, presbytery, General Assembly.

  48. I work for the General Assembly on one of the committees.

  49. Now, a lot of people have heard about Mission to the World, which is a committee of the General Assembly that helps local churches do international missions.

  50. A number of people have heard of Mission to North America.

  51. That's a committee that helps the local church plant churches and do mercy ministry.

  52. And then many people have heard of Reform University Ministries or Reform University Fellowship.

  53. They're a committee that comes alongside the local church to do campus ministry.

  54. Who helps the local church do discipleship within its walls?

  55. That's CDM.

  56. So we help local churches in the area of children's ministry, youth ministry, men's ministry, women's ministry, older adult ministry, and leadership training.

  57. And so that's what we do.

  58. Now, we're not a large office.

  59. We have less than ten people in our office.

  60. But mainly what we try to do is go around to different churches and connect people to people and people to resources.

  61. We were here, I think it was March a year ago, we were here for a children's conference and had a number of people from Providence Presbytery come join us here.

  62. And we just began to share what's going on in children's ministry.

  63. And that's much of what we will do.

  64. In fact, I'll be in Cincinnati, Ohio next week doing something along those lines.

  65. One of the things I also do is I go and meet with session members as we talk about churches that are going through transition.

  66. I'm sure you know a little bit about that.

  67. You're now in the process of finding a new pastor.

  68. And so one of the things I want to look at today, our text is Acts chapter 4.

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  69. If you have your Bible, I invite you to turn in that to Acts chapter 4.

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  70. We'll be looking at 23 through 31.

  71. This idea of what are we called to do as God's people, especially as we go through transition.

  72. A number of years ago, I heard a podcast from a friend who is leading his church through transition.

  73. In fact, this man was a fairly new pastor.

  74. And so he was having a gathering and one of the people got up and they were saying,

  75. Here's our new vision for our church and we want to be men and women of prayer.

  76. And when I heard that, I thought, you know, that's an interesting statement.

  77. In some ways, it's almost like a throwaway statement in contemporary Christianity of,

  78. We want to be men and women of prayer.

  79. Well, what does that say about them before?

  80. Were they not men and women of prayer before?

  81. Well, that's probably not the case.

  82. They probably prayed before.

  83. Or consider the Embers to a Flame ministry, which is in our denomination and helps churches go through a church transition, a church recovery.

  84. One of their strategies is number five.

  85. It's the ministry of prayer.

  86. And the idea is that prayer usually exists in a church, but many times it becomes anemic.

  87. And we need to realize that we can be perfunctory and rote when it comes to prayer.

  88. And we need a vision.

  89. I think that vision comes as we look at Acts chapter 4.

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  90. Remember, we're coming out of Easter.

  91. And we're living in this reality.

  92. What does it mean to be those who are sons and daughters of the resurrection?

  93. Understand, this text in Acts chapter 4 probably occurred less than six months after the resurrection.

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  94. We don't know exactly when, but it was probably pretty soon where the events of crucifixion and the resurrection and Pentecost were still very fresh on the minds of people.

  95. And what we have is Peter and John go to the temple and they heal a lame man and they were arrested, they were tried, they were released.

  96. With this warning, don't talk about this Jesus anymore.

  97. Don't talk about this resurrection.

  98. But the disciples who had been so bold in proclaiming the truth, we now see their boldness continues.

  99. But it's a boldness in prayer.

  100. And their prayer is recorded.

  101. And as we read through this, these words challenge and encourage us.

  102. Follow along with me as I read Acts chapter 4, beginning in 23.

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  103. When they, of course speaking of Peter and John, were released,

  104. they went to their friends and reported what the chief priests and elders had said to them.

  105. And when they heard it, they lifted up their voices together to God and said,

  106. Sovereign Lord, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them,

  107. who through the mouth of our father David, your servant, said by the Holy Spirit,

  108. why did the Gentiles rage and the peoples plot in vain?

  109. The kings of the earth set themselves and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord and against his anointed.

  110. For truly in this city there were gathered together against your holy servant Jesus,

  111. whom you anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate,

  112. along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel,

  113. to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place.

  114. Now, Lord, look upon their threats and grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness,

  115. while you stretch out your hand to heal,

  116. and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus.

  117. And when they had prayed,

  118. the place in which they were gathered together was shaken,

  119. and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit

  120. and continued to speak the word of God with boldness.

  121. Pray with me.

  122. O Lord, now we pray that you will open our eyes,

  123. that we may see the wonderful things you have for us in your word.

  124. O Lord, let the words of my mouth and the meditations of our hearts be acceptable in your sight.

  125. For, O Lord, you are our strength and our redeemer.

  126. The grass withers and the flowers fade.

  127. But your word, O Lord, stands forever.

  128. Bless your word to our lives now, we pray in Jesus' name.

  129. Amen.

  130. Amen.

  131. When God takes me home to heaven,

  132. I'm looking forward to seeing a man I knew in our church in Montgomery.

  133. His name is Orville Bach.

  134. Orville was a tall man with huge hands and a deep voice.

  135. It was one of those voices where you,

  136. when you're trying to picture the voice of God on Mount Sinai,

  137. it's, you know, you got James Earl Jones and Orville Bach, in my mind.

  138. That's just the man he was.

  139. And one thing about Orville is he was very active in prayer requests.

  140. We would have an evening worship service and we'd always get together and sing some hymns

  141. and then we'd have prayer requests.

  142. And I could usually count on Orville to give some prayer requests.

  143. Well, a number of years ago, Montgomery was going through a long drought

  144. and Mr. Bach, in his deep voice, said,

  145. we need to pray for rain, pastor.

  146. And so that became part of the intercessory prayer for that evening.

  147. And then we went from prayer to the sermon.

  148. It was a sermon on Deuteronomy 12 and I was preaching that night.

  149. And in Deuteronomy 12, God says to Israel,

  150. Israel, obey.

  151. You have seen the great works of the Lord, the sovereign Lord,

  152. the sovereign Lord who's conquered your enemies

  153. and given you a land of great blessing.

  154. And in light of that, we're called to go out,

  155. even in a world that opposes us,

  156. knowing the greatness of the God we serve.

  157. Well, sermon was finished.

  158. We had the closing prayer.

  159. And during the benediction,

  160. you could hear rain falling outside.

  161. Mr. Bach came up to me and said,

  162. that's a pretty good prayer, pastor.

  163. You ought to pray more often.

  164. Well, I'll let you...

  165. That is a red letter date in my prayer life and in my ministry

  166. because here was this request

  167. and the answer came so quickly.

  168. And I remember my motions there.

  169. It was like, I didn't say this out loud,

  170. but I was feeling it.

  171. God does answer prayer.

  172. It's almost like this is the exception rather than the rule.

  173. You ever do that?

  174. I think most Christians do.

  175. But you see, in the history of the church,

  176. especially the early church that we have here in Acts,

  177. we see a different era of bold prayer.

  178. But one of the things we have to watch is

  179. we can fall into this idea that,

  180. oh man, we read these stories in Acts

  181. and wasn't it great?

  182. God was so powerful and so present there.

  183. It was wonderful.

  184. And we can begin to think that that was the God of back then.

  185. He's not the God of right now.

  186. That's not the case.

  187. The God that was present that's recorded here

  188. is the God that's here now.

  189. And God is present with all of His power.

  190. It's not like He had a lot of power then

  191. and only a little power now.

  192. But the idea is,

  193. just as He's powerful there and He used prayer there,

  194. He's powerful here and uses prayer here.

  195. But we fail to see it.

  196. And so what we need as we come to this text

  197. is that God gives us insight into His purpose for prayer

  198. and it challenges us.

  199. It spurs us to pray more boldly

  200. as we face a world that does oppose us,

  201. as we face challenges,

  202. transition in our lives,

  203. in our businesses,

  204. in our churches.

  205. God is near to thwart His opponents,

  206. to spread His Word

  207. and to accomplish His plan.

  208. Now the nearness of God,

  209. understand,

  210. is assumed throughout this text.

  211. Earlier in chapter 4, verse 19,

  212. the message that the apostles had spoken to the leaders,

  213. the Jewish leaders said,

  214. our ministry is in the sight of God.

  215. It's not that God is up there and He doesn't care.

  216. No, He's watching what we're doing.

  217. In verse 29, it even says that

  218. they're praying,

  219. Lord, look upon the threats that are given against us.

  220. The idea is that God is present

  221. and God is concerned.

  222. He really cares about what's happening.

  223. And then, of course, you have verse 31

  224. where the place was shaken.

  225. And, of course, that harkens back to Acts chapter 2

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  226. when the Holy Spirit came down on the day of Pentecost

  227. and the whole building was shaken in the upper room.

  228. And you have to understand that what was happening here in verse 31

  229. is God was giving His people assurance.

  230. Now, don't fall into the error of thinking,

  231. well, because that building was shaken,

  232. that means that God showed up.

  233. No, it's better to understand

  234. that in this case,

  235. God, who was always present,

  236. pulled aside the veil

  237. and made that presence known in a special way.

  238. Now, of course, the question that comes out of that

  239. is, well, why doesn't He do that now?

  240. And understand that God

  241. could shake this building right now

  242. if He so chooses.

  243. But He's also given us Acts chapter 4

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  244. where He assured His people

  245. that He was present,

  246. that He is Emmanuel.

  247. It's the same God.

  248. The same purposes.

  249. The same presence.

  250. Now, how does this help us?

  251. God is near. Why?

  252. Well, He's near to thwart His opponents

  253. and so we pray.

  254. Look at verse 23.

  255. The prayer flows out of this arrest

  256. of Peter and John.

  257. And if you go back earlier in the chapter,

  258. it's very interesting.

  259. It's almost like as if Luke is recording this.

  260. Who's who of all the powerful people

  261. that were existing in that time

  262. and they were all against Peter and John.

  263. And then you go to verse 25 and 26

  264. and the prayer references Psalm 2.

  265. Psalm 2.

  266. The opponents gathering together

  267. and setting themselves up against God.

  268. And then you go to verse 27

  269. where there's a reference to Christ's arrest

  270. and His trial and His crucifixion.

  271. And remember, these were probably events

  272. that were still fresh on the people's minds.

  273. And what the apostles are saying

  274. through their prayer

  275. is all of that,

  276. that people were gathering against them,

  277. people were gathering against Jesus,

  278. it's all a manifestation of Psalm 2.

  279. In verse 29,

  280. they reference these leaders

  281. told them to be quiet about Jesus.

  282. And so, here we have it.

  283. Luke is presenting to us

  284. in the face of unified,

  285. determined, powerful opposition.

  286. What do God's people do?

  287. They pray.

  288. Verse 29 and 30,

  289. they appeal for justice.

  290. God, bring justice.

  291. They appeal for God to continue His work.

  292. And they realize that their prayers

  293. are part of the battle.

  294. Because the opposition is not against them,

  295. the opposition is against God.

  296. But what do we do

  297. as we face a culture that opposes us?

  298. What do we do?

  299. We take it personally.

  300. Oh, it's all against us.

  301. And we cry,

  302. victim, victim.

  303. And we separate God out of the situation.

  304. But we must see that all the opposition

  305. is against God.

  306. Now, sometimes,

  307. because of the obnoxious behavior

  308. of Christians,

  309. sometimes the opposition

  310. is against the obnoxious behavior.

  311. We need to pray.

  312. That's where we need to start.

  313. Not too long after I came into

  314. my current position of coordinator,

  315. because your work for the General Assembly,

  316. you know how sometimes pastors

  317. can get those letters from church members

  318. about how much you're doing wrong.

  319. I get them from the whole denomination.

  320. And there was a man who wrote

  321. from Virginia.

  322. I can't remember the name of the man

  323. or his church.

  324. He was a PCA member.

  325. This letter was 14 pages long.

  326. Full of fear

  327. and condemnation.

  328. I read it

  329. and I could just hear his voice

  330. in my ears.

  331. He was talking about the culture

  332. of the United States

  333. and everything,

  334. everything in the letter

  335. dealt with U.S. politics.

  336. And the message of the letter

  337. was just basically,

  338. wake up!

  339. And so what he was doing,

  340. he said,

  341. I'm going to write to the leader,

  342. one of the leaders of our denomination

  343. and say,

  344. wake up!

  345. Speak out!

  346. You know what was missing

  347. throughout all 14 pages?

  348. Never once

  349. was there a call to prayer.

  350. Never once

  351. was there any hint

  352. of bringing this

  353. before the Lord.

  354. Instead,

  355. what it was

  356. is a call

  357. to militant action.

  358. One of my favorite hymns

  359. says,

  360. it's not with swords

  361. loud clashing,

  362. nor roll of stirring drums,

  363. but it's deeds

  364. of love and mercy.

  365. Finally,

  366. the heavenly kingdom comes.

  367. And that deeds

  368. of love and mercy

  369. begins with prayer.

  370. I ask you,

  371. what is your default position

  372. in the face of opposition?

  373. It's true,

  374. God defeats His enemies

  375. through the prayers

  376. of His people.

  377. This text calls us

  378. to pray.

  379. Humble words

  380. of petition to God

  381. more than harsh words

  382. of rebuke.

  383. to our opponents.

  384. God is present.

  385. But more for just

  386. turning back the bad things,

  387. He also promotes

  388. the good things.

  389. God is near

  390. to spread His Word,

  391. and so we pray.

  392. Remember the cause

  393. of the arrest.

  394. Peter was preaching

  395. about Jesus.

  396. And note the desired goal

  397. of the prayers.

  398. Right there in verse 29,

  399. they were to,

  400. Lord,

  401. do this so we will speak

  402. the Word of God

  403. with boldness.

  404. And so it was the Holy Spirit.

  405. They were asking

  406. for Holy Spirit-inspired courage,

  407. Holy Spirit-inspired clarity,

  408. and the result of the prayers

  409. there in verse 31,

  410. they did continue

  411. to speak with boldness.

  412. And the ministry

  413. that had begun

  414. at Pentecost

  415. was continued.

  416. Brothers and sisters,

  417. understand

  418. that that was a chapter

  419. in redemptive history.

  420. But the redemptive story

  421. continues,

  422. and we are in a new chapter

  423. of redemptive history,

  424. but the story is the same.

  425. Salvation is through

  426. the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

  427. And we are to spread

  428. that Word.

  429. God spreading the message

  430. of salvation

  431. through Jesus Christ

  432. and through the grace of God.

  433. Not by doing good works

  434. or doing good deeds.

  435. It's through the grace of God

  436. who changes our lives

  437. and enables us to live

  438. with redemptive purposes.

  439. Matthew 28,

  440. we are to go

  441. and make disciples.

  442. What happens to us?

  443. We grow weary.

  444. We grow distracted.

  445. Sometimes we pray

  446. from ministries,

  447. but it's just so

  448. the ministry program

  449. will be effective.

  450. God will bring the people

  451. and God will bring the money

  452. rather than

  453. God spread your Word.

  454. Spread the message

  455. about Jesus.

  456. I work in education.

  457. Church education.

  458. And we pray for sermons.

  459. We pray for Sunday school lessons.

  460. But do we expect change?

  461. It's easy to complain

  462. about the malaise

  463. that happens

  464. among Christians today.

  465. Do we eagerly pray,

  466. God, change hearts?

  467. Change lives?

  468. Brothers and sisters,

  469. we must pray

  470. for God to act

  471. and for us to spread the Word.

  472. I was humbled

  473. a year or so ago.

  474. So,

  475. part of my position

  476. is to work with our

  477. women's ministry,

  478. the PCA Women's Ministry.

  479. It's led by a lady

  480. named Karen Hodge.

  481. And we have regional advisors

  482. throughout the denomination

  483. who gather together

  484. on what we call

  485. the women's ministry team.

  486. And we were preparing

  487. for a conference

  488. that we have every year

  489. in Atlanta.

  490. And so,

  491. what was happening,

  492. I was,

  493. because I was one of the speakers,

  494. I was on this email chain

  495. of speakers,

  496. what are you talking about?

  497. And they were going

  498. back and forth

  499. about here,

  500. this prayer request

  501. and this prayer request

  502. and they were praying

  503. for each other.

  504. And all of this,

  505. it's just email

  506. after email

  507. after email.

  508. I'm praying for you,

  509. I'm praying for this,

  510. I'm praying for that,

  511. please pray for this.

  512. And,

  513. you know,

  514. I had this thought.

  515. They pray about everything.

  516. And I really,

  517. I mean,

  518. I seriously thought,

  519. isn't this a little

  520. over the top?

  521. Now,

  522. the theme

  523. of the conference

  524. that year

  525. was leading

  526. with truth.

  527. serving the church

  528. through the ministry

  529. of the word,

  530. building relationships

  531. with one another.

  532. And when I

  533. reacquainted myself

  534. with the theme,

  535. and then I looked

  536. at that email chain,

  537. God used it

  538. to convict me.

  539. I'm a teaching elder

  540. in the Presbyterian Church

  541. in America.

  542. I'm a minister.

  543. I'm a teacher.

  544. Yet,

  545. I am so prone

  546. to trust my skill

  547. at being able

  548. to convey the truth.

  549. And I minimize

  550. prayer for God

  551. to spread the word.

  552. I appreciated so much

  553. even this morning.

  554. Will leaned over

  555. and said,

  556. can I pray for you?

  557. It's so necessary

  558. because it's through prayer

  559. that God

  560. spreads the word.

  561. It's prayer

  562. more than skill

  563. that softens

  564. hard hearts

  565. and reigns in

  566. distracted minds.

  567. I've talked to people,

  568. well,

  569. I can't share the gospel

  570. because I just don't know

  571. all,

  572. I might not answer

  573. all the questions

  574. they have.

  575. No,

  576. you pray

  577. and share the gospel

  578. as best you know how

  579. because it's not

  580. your eloquence,

  581. it's not your skill,

  582. it is the Holy Spirit

  583. that changes hearts.

  584. And so you pray.

  585. Because God

  586. causes His word

  587. to spread

  588. through prayer.

  589. He thwarts opponents,

  590. He spreads the word.

  591. And that's all part

  592. of His third purpose.

  593. You might call it

  594. a greater purpose

  595. or an overarching purpose

  596. in that God is near

  597. to accomplish His plan.

  598. The theme of God's

  599. faithful execution

  600. of His covenant promises,

  601. it's throughout

  602. this whole text.

  603. It's the backdrop

  604. of the prayer,

  605. in fact.

  606. Verse 24,

  607. it starts with covenant language

  608. where they pray

  609. as the sovereign Lord,

  610. creator,

  611. ruler,

  612. all of that is covenant language

  613. that the people of Israel

  614. know about.

  615. And then verses 27 and 28,

  616. they're very open

  617. and honest.

  618. Even Christ's passion

  619. fulfilled God's plan.

  620. verse 29 and 30,

  621. the presupposition

  622. is that God's plan

  623. would continue.

  624. God is working out

  625. this huge story

  626. that salvation

  627. will be made

  628. through Jesus Christ

  629. and the brokenness

  630. of the fall

  631. will be undone.

  632. And God is doing

  633. that work.

  634. And His people pray

  635. to that end.

  636. And here's the great mystery

  637. of the Christian life.

  638. The sovereign Lord

  639. accomplishes that plan

  640. through the prayers

  641. of His people.

  642. I can't explain

  643. how it works.

  644. But God does it.

  645. Your prayers are necessary.

  646. Verse 29 and 30,

  647. that prayer

  648. was important

  649. because that petition

  650. that they lifted

  651. thousands of years ago

  652. was necessary.

  653. for God

  654. to work out

  655. His plan.

  656. And brothers and sisters,

  657. our prayers

  658. have the same effect

  659. because it's not based,

  660. well, I'm not an apostle,

  661. so God doesn't listen.

  662. No, He doesn't listen

  663. to them

  664. because they're apostles.

  665. Why does He listen

  666. to our prayers?

  667. Because we are covered

  668. in the righteousness

  669. of Jesus Christ.

  670. And so our prayers,

  671. Revelation uses

  672. the image

  673. of our prayers

  674. are like bowls

  675. of incense

  676. going up to the Father.

  677. And our prayers

  678. are imperfect.

  679. But what does

  680. Romans 8 say?

  681. It's the Spirit

  682. that takes our prayers.

  683. I love the image

  684. a pastor told me

  685. years ago.

  686. It's like God

  687. takes this feeble prayer

  688. that I lift up,

  689. He wraps it in

  690. the righteousness

  691. of Christ

  692. and says,

  693. here Father,

  694. answer for my sake.

  695. prayer.

  696. And so we pray.

  697. And so we pray.

  698. The problem is

  699. sometimes our practice

  700. of prayer

  701. doesn't reflect

  702. our doctrine

  703. of prayer.

  704. We don't truly

  705. embrace our doctrine

  706. or we would pray.

  707. We lose sight

  708. of this fact

  709. that we're participating

  710. in this story

  711. of redemption.

  712. We are players.

  713. We're not spectators.

  714. Prayers offered

  715. in a fallen world

  716. join the stream

  717. of petitions

  718. offered by other saints,

  719. the saints before us,

  720. and even the prayers

  721. of Christ Himself.

  722. God

  723. has not abandoned

  724. His fallen creation.

  725. He proved that

  726. by giving us Christ.

  727. And now He's near

  728. to accomplish

  729. that plan.

  730. And so we pray.

  731. John Calvin said this,

  732. by means of our prayers,

  733. God does

  734. what He planned

  735. all along to do.

  736. And prayer

  737. reorients

  738. the believer

  739. to what God

  740. is doing.

  741. over a year ago

  742. I had a friend

  743. who preached

  744. in his congregation.

  745. It was towards

  746. the end of the year

  747. and he was preaching

  748. to get ready

  749. for the new year.

  750. And he preached

  751. on revival.

  752. He told the story

  753. of a South Carolina

  754. pastor

  755. named

  756. John Gerardot.

  757. in 1857

  758. this man

  759. was a white pastor

  760. in a black church

  761. in Charleston,

  762. South Carolina.

  763. And they had reached

  764. a point

  765. in the life

  766. of the church

  767. where the congregation

  768. had sort of plateaued

  769. and there was

  770. this lethargy

  771. that was

  772. sort of happening.

  773. And so what they did,

  774. the officers got together

  775. with the pastor

  776. and said,

  777. Pastor,

  778. you just got to preach.

  779. You got to preach

  780. and get us out of this.

  781. Preach.

  782. And Gerardot said this,

  783. I don't want to preach

  784. until God sends revival.

  785. And until that happens,

  786. we will pray.

  787. And so they began

  788. a series of prayer meetings

  789. night after night.

  790. Now one evening,

  791. while he was leading

  792. in prayer,

  793. Gerardot said

  794. he felt a sensation.

  795. It was like a bolt

  796. of electricity

  797. hit his head

  798. and went through his body.

  799. And he was speechless

  800. for a while.

  801. And he was able

  802. to talk again.

  803. He says,

  804. the Holy Spirit

  805. has come.

  806. We will begin

  807. preaching tomorrow.

  808. He sang a hymn,

  809. gave the dismissal,

  810. he walked down,

  811. congregation stayed.

  812. nobody left their seats.

  813. So the people sat down,

  814. pastor got up

  815. and he prayed.

  816. He preached.

  817. He proclaimed the gospel.

  818. And basically,

  819. his message was very,

  820. very simple.

  821. Embrace the gospel.

  822. Accept the gospel.

  823. Accept what it means

  824. to be saved

  825. by Jesus Christ,

  826. by his work alone.

  827. And the reports are

  828. the sanctuary

  829. was filled

  830. with the spirit

  831. of humble repentance

  832. and joy.

  833. Some were confessing

  834. their sins.

  835. Others were just

  836. elated at the forgiveness

  837. they enjoyed

  838. in Jesus Christ.

  839. And the messages,

  840. the meetings

  841. night after night

  842. for eight weeks,

  843. large numbers

  844. of whites and blacks

  845. were converted.

  846. Churches throughout

  847. the city

  848. were blessed.

  849. Christ,

  850. this was in 1857.

  851. Four years later,

  852. Charleston would begin

  853. to experience

  854. the horrors

  855. of the Civil War.

  856. But in that season,

  857. God shook the hearts

  858. of his people.

  859. It all began

  860. with prayer.

  861. Brothers and sisters,

  862. bold prayer

  863. is our calling.

  864. And I wish

  865. I prayed more

  866. than I do.

  867. But let's see

  868. what God does.

  869. Let's pray.

  870. It was true

  871. for the disciples

  872. in Jerusalem.

  873. It's true

  874. for us today.

  875. God is powerfully

  876. present

  877. to thwart opponents,

  878. to spread his word,

  879. to accomplish his plan.

  880. And because

  881. he is working,

  882. we must pray.

  883. Join me now.

  884. Almighty God,

  885. sovereign creator,

  886. ruler,

  887. redeemer,

  888. we praise you.

  889. You are the God

  890. who made us.

  891. You are the God

  892. who redeems us.

  893. You loved us

  894. even in our sin.

  895. And you lift us

  896. up and embrace us

  897. through Jesus Christ,

  898. cleansing us

  899. of our sin.

  900. And not only that,

  901. Lord,

  902. you fill us

  903. with your Spirit

  904. so that when we walk

  905. out of this sanctuary,

  906. we are not alone.

  907. The power of Emmanuel

  908. is with us.

  909. Oh, Lord,

  910. soften our hearts.

  911. Move our hearts

  912. to prayer.

  913. Oh, Lord,

  914. bring your blessing

  915. on this congregation.

  916. Bring your blessing

  917. in our lives,

  918. in our ministries,

  919. in our relationships.

  920. Bring healing.

  921. Bring change.

  922. Lord,

  923. as we go now

  924. to a time

  925. of the sacrament,

  926. it is another token,

  927. a sign and seal

  928. that you indeed

  929. are with us.

  930. You cleanse us.

  931. You've redeemed us.

  932. Oh, Lord,

  933. bless us,

  934. we pray,

  935. in Jesus' name.

  936. Amen.
