  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. Good morning, everyone. How are y'all this morning?

  4. I guess that's inappropriate to ask. You can't really answer that question at the moment.

  5. I've just realized that. My name's Reed, and I'm glad to be with y'all.

  6. Nine years ago, you helped start, and you were a huge part of starting the ministry that now is a huge part of my life, RUF, at UAH.

  7. You called Brad and Caroline Tubasing into town. Do you realize it was nine years ago?

  8. Many of you were part of that very beginning stage of the ministry, and my family, we've been here for three years now,

  9. ending our third year on the campus at UAH, and we're so thankful for the ministry at UAH.

  10. Thankful for you starting it and being a huge financial and prayer partner of ours in that ministry.

  11. Many of you on an individual level, and certainly as a church, you are a huge part of it.

  12. I just want to say thank you while I have the chance.

  13. We love what we're doing at UAH, and we're thankful for the work the Lord is doing there through RUF.

  14. UAH is a very changing community. I don't know if you've been around the campus much lately.

  15. I know many of our students. There's one walking in. Hi, Rosie.

  16. Many of our students are here this morning. Get to know the new UAH.

  17. It's changed a lot over the last even five years, even three years since I've been there.

  18. There's a lot more campus life now. There's a lot more campus community.

  19. They just built this new $26 million student life facility that's great,

  20. and we feel like RUF is kind of at the center of what UAH is wanting to become more,

  21. and that is a campus where there's a community presence where students feel cared for

  22. and interact with one another and have a great time.

  23. So there's a thriving Greek community and intramurals and lots of other fun things going on.

  24. The Lord's blessing our work there. We're thankful to be there.

  25. Thank you for being a part of it with us.

  26. We're going to consider a passage this morning from John chapter 1 and John chapter 8

John 1 chapter mention John 8 chapter mention

  27. that we will read together here in a moment on the Jesus being the light of the world.

  28. So if you're into outlines and that sort of thing, and I imagine a few of you are,

  29. my outline for this morning will be the miracle of light, the ministry of light, and the mission of light.

  30. And I think you'll see that even in this passage as we read.

  31. So let's begin in John chapter 1, and then we'll go to chapter 8.

    John 1 chapter mention

  32. This is the Word of the Lord.

  33. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

  34. He was in the beginning with God.

  35. All things were made through Him, and without Him was not anything made that was made.

  36. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men.

  37. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

  38. And over to John chapter 8.

    John 8 chapter mention

  39. Beginning in verse 12, Jesus speaks to them, saying,

  40. I am the light of the world.

  41. Whoever follows Me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.

  42. So the Pharisee said to Him,

  43. You are bearing witness about Yourself.

  44. Your testimony is not true.

  45. Jesus answered,

  46. Even if I do bear witness about Myself, My testimony is true.

  47. For I know where I came from and where I am going,

  48. but You do not know where I come from or where I am going.

  49. You judge according to the flesh.

  50. I judge no one.

  51. Yet even if I do judge, My judgment is true.

  52. For it is not I alone who judge, but I and the Father who sent Me.

  53. In Your law, it is written that the testimony of two people is true.

  54. I am the one who bears witness about Myself, and the Father who sent Me bears witness about Me.

  55. And they said to Him,

  56. Therefore, where is your Father?

  57. Jesus answered,

  58. You know neither Me nor My Father.

  59. If you knew Me, you would know My Father also.

  60. These words He spoke in the treasury as He taught in the temple,

  61. but no one arrested Him because His hour had not yet come.

  62. The grass withers and the flowers fade,

  63. but the Word of our Lord will stand forever.

  64. Let's pray.

  65. Oh God, Your testimony is true.

  66. I pray that as we consider it this morning,

  67. we would see where You are the light of the world,

  68. even in our own lives,

  69. in our community, in our churches.

  70. That we would know the abiding presence,

  71. the comforting presence of the healing light of the gospel.

  72. I pray that I would.

  73. I pray, Lord, that You would speak to me through me this morning.

  74. Your Word would produce abundant fruit that is to Your glory.

  75. I pray that the words of my mouth and the meditations of our hearts together

  76. would be pleasing in Your sight,

  77. O Lord, our Rock and Redeemer.

  78. We ask in Jesus' name.

  79. Amen.

  80. I don't know if you realize this,

  81. but next week,

  82. I believe it's a week from tomorrow,

  83. marks the four-year anniversary of those awful April 27th storms

  84. that rolled through this community.

  85. four years ago.

  86. My family was not here yet.

  87. We moved the summer after those storms.

  88. I watched from the distance.

  89. I was watching the news every day

  90. following those storms and the aftermath.

  91. But many of you did not watch from your TVs.

  92. You lived it.

  93. You were here.

  94. I've heard countless stories of what life was like there

  95. on April 27th,

  96. and even the following days and weeks thereafter.

  97. One of the themes that keeps coming up,

  98. if it's not devastation of life,

  99. it's devastation of property,

  100. this idea of this devastating darkness

  101. that existed in that post-tornado community.

  102. I was talking with one of our students just last week

  103. who was a senior in high school when those storms hit,

  104. and she described for me the next several days

  105. of the darkness that existed at night.

  106. I understand there was a curfew

  107. because obviously the power was out for many days.

  108. I know upwards of over a week,

  109. at least in some areas.

  110. And she talked about the…

  111. She said,

  112. I've never heard such a terrible sound

  113. as the silence at night.

  114. When your power is out,

  115. if you don't have a generator.

  116. And she said,

  117. even the dogs stop barking.

  118. I don't know what that means,

  119. but that's a scary thought.

  120. I want you to picture

  121. that post-tornado storm darkness.

  122. You have it in your minds,

  123. what it was like to live in that darkness?

  124. I think that's the setting of Genesis 1.

  125. Before creation,

  126. two things existed,

  127. God and darkness.

  128. And God speaks into the darkness

  129. and everything changes in a moment.

  130. That darkness that existed

  131. was the very setting of Genesis 1.

  132. And do you realize the first words

  133. that God speaks,

  134. at least in recorded Scripture for us,

  135. are these words.

  136. He says,

  137. Let there be light.

  138. So there was darkness,

  139. and into the darkness,

  140. God spoke and light

  141. shattered the darkness away.

  142. And we start to see this

  143. as a regular theme

  144. of how God deals with His people

  145. throughout the Old Testament

  146. and the New.

  147. You start to see this idea

  148. of light and darkness

  149. come up a lot,

  150. and it's an interesting study to do.

  151. If you don't have a devotional life right now,

  152. just go search for light and darkness.

  153. It's all through the Old Testament.

  154. The Exodus story

  155. gives a perfect illustration.

  156. When the Israelites

  157. were leaving that bondage in Egypt,

  158. God sent the abiding presence

  159. of the pillar of cloud by day

  160. and the pillar of fire by night.

  161. The light penetrating the darkness,

  162. which was a regular reminder

  163. to God's people

  164. that He was with them

  165. and that He cared for them

  166. and He had not forgotten them,

  167. and that He would lead them

  168. in the midst of the darkness.

  169. Various authors

  170. begin to pick up on this theme.

  171. Thereafter,

  172. you have it in the poets.

  173. Even David writes,

  174. the Lord is my light

  175. and my salvation.

  176. Whom shall I fear?

  177. The Lord is the stronghold of my life.

  178. Whom should I be afraid?

  179. Psalm 119 famously says,

  180. the Word,

  181. your Word is a lamp

  182. into my feet

  183. and a light into my path.

  184. And then in Proverbs,

  185. for the commandment is a lamp

  186. and the teaching a light.

  187. It continues into the prophets.

  188. Isaiah gives the same imagery

  189. when he prophesies

  190. of the coming salvation of God,

  191. and you know what he described it as?

  192. The light of salvation

  193. coming into the darkness.

  194. He says,

  195. I will make you as a light

  196. for the nation

  197. that my salvation may reach

  198. to the ends of the earth.

  199. There's many more places we could go,

  200. but I want you to start to see

  201. that this is God's MO.

  202. What He does

  203. is speaks into the darkness.

  204. He provides His presence

  205. as light

  206. scattering the darkness away.

  207. It's what He's been doing

  208. since the beginning,

  209. since He first said,

  210. let there be light.

  211. It's what He did

  212. all throughout the Old Testament.

  213. And then we come

  214. to John chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  215. And it's interesting

  216. how John's gospel begins

  217. with those very same three words

  218. of Genesis 1,

  219. in the beginning.

  220. But this time,

  221. the light that shines

  222. in the darkness

  223. doesn't just hang in the air,

  224. but it takes on a body.

  225. The words of God

  226. aren't just spoken,

  227. but they are now personified.

  228. In the beginning was the Word,

  229. and the Word was with God,

  230. and the Word was God.

  231. He was in the beginning with God.

  232. And John says,

  233. in Him was life,

  234. and that life

  235. was the light

  236. of men.

  237. And the light shines

  238. in the darkness.

  239. The light shines

  240. in the darkness,

  241. and the darkness

  242. has not overcome it.

  243. In the beginning,

  244. God spoke light

  245. into the darkness.

  246. And in the beginning,

  247. His Word

  248. shattered the darkness away.

  249. And now Jesus comes along,

  250. and He says,

  251. and I am

  252. the light.

  253. The thing we need to see

  254. from the very beginning

  255. is that Jesus Christ

  256. is the guiding light

  257. of God,

  258. revealing God's truth

  259. to God's people.

  260. He is the miracle

  261. of light

  262. made manifest,

  263. the light embodied.

  264. He is now

  265. the personified provision

  266. of God

  267. for His people,

  268. the light to shine

  269. into our darkened worlds.

  270. And so what does Jesus

  271. as the light

  272. do

  273. for His people?

  274. There's a lot

  275. we could demonstrate

  276. about what light does.

  277. Obviously,

  278. but I want to narrow it down

  279. to two very simple things

  280. that light does

  281. in our lives

  282. and that Jesus does

  283. being the ministry of light.

  284. First,

  285. the light scatters

  286. the darkness away.

  287. Light and darkness

  288. do not coexist.

  289. They are not friends.

  290. They are opposed

  291. to each other.

  292. There's either light

  293. in a room

  294. or there is darkness.

  295. At night,

  296. we only see darkness

  297. unless a light

  298. is shining.

  299. Why is that?

  300. Because light scatters

  301. the darkness away.

  302. And so when God speaks

  303. into the darkness,

  304. it moves away.

  305. Now, here's the way

  306. to illustrate it.

  307. My wife and I

  308. are both from

  309. South Alabama originally.

  310. We've lived out of state

  311. for a number of years

  312. before we came back

  313. to this side of Alabama,

  314. which is not,

  315. by the way,

  316. Alabama.

  317. Huntsville is not Alabama.

  318. I like it a lot.

  319. I like it better

  320. than Alabama

  321. in some ways.

  322. It's not Alabama.

  323. I'm from South Alabama

  324. and one of the things

  325. that I...

  326. We missed a lot

  327. when we moved.

  328. So we lived in Utah

  329. for a couple of years

  330. before we came back here.

  331. And there's a lot

  332. I missed about living

  333. in the deep South.

  334. I missed fried okra.

  335. I missed boiled peanuts.

  336. I missed sweet tea.

  337. It's getting to be lunchtime.

  338. I'm thinking of...

  339. Okay, there's some other things

  340. I missed too besides food.

  341. There's also things

  342. that I did not miss

  343. about living in the South

  344. and I didn't realize this

  345. until we moved back.

  346. And one of those things

  347. came very quickly.

  348. So we have a little house

  349. in Madison

  350. and this back deck

  351. of our house

  352. that we like to

  353. when the weather

  354. starts getting nicer

  355. like it is now.

  356. We have a grill back there

  357. and we'll cook for the girls

  358. and sometimes we'll,

  359. you know,

  360. have a dinner at the table.

  361. And one of the things

  362. that I realized

  363. that I did not miss

  364. about living in Alabama

  365. was what happened

  366. after we were grilling

  367. one night

  368. and we had cooked

  369. hamburgers or something

  370. and afterwards

  371. we put the girls to bed

  372. and I went back

  373. to clean up

  374. from the grilling

  375. and the picnic

  376. kind of scene.

  377. And I turned the lights on

  378. and you know those cockroaches

  379. the size of iPhones?

  380. I did not realize

  381. how much I did not miss

  382. those things.

  383. Those are awfully frightening.

  384. They're like the size

  385. of wharf rats.

  386. And all of a sudden

  387. my deck was just full of them.

  388. Do you know how to get rid

  389. of cockroaches

  390. besides paying a company?

  391. There are good companies

  392. that will do it.

  393. Maybe some of you

  394. are in that line of work.

  395. But besides doing that,

  396. one very simple way

  397. that you can get rid

  398. of cockroaches

  399. from your back deck

  400. is this.

  401. You turn on the lights.

  402. Right?

  403. That's how it works.

  404. You turn on the lights

  405. and the cockroaches flee.

  406. Here's what's interesting.

  407. Jesus says in another place

  408. in John's Gospel,

  409. He says,

  410. light has come into the world

  411. but men loved darkness

  412. rather than light

  413. because their deeds

  414. were evil.

  415. He says,

  416. everyone who does evil

  417. hates the light

  418. and will not come into the light

  419. for fear that his deeds

  420. will be exposed.

  421. Do you know what Jesus is saying?

  422. He's saying that we are like cockroaches

  423. who hate the presence of the light.

  424. When the light comes on,

  425. we want to scatter

  426. and run back into the darkness.

  427. We fear exposure.

  428. We are comfortable

  429. in the shadows

  430. and hiding.

  431. We don't want to be known.

  432. And the light of the gospel,

  433. the ministry of the light of Jesus

  434. is that he shines the light

  435. into the dark places

  436. of our lives

  437. where we do not want him to work.

  438. And he wants to scatter

  439. the darkness away.

  440. This happens in two senses.

  441. One, this is the condition

  442. of our hearts

  443. before the salvation.

  444. Our hearts are that

  445. post-tornado darkness.

  446. As we are lost

  447. in the bondage

  448. of our own sin,

  449. where we are

  450. in our rebellion,

  451. where we are bent

  452. against God,

  453. want nothing to do with him,

  454. that is the darkness

  455. that exists within our hearts.

  456. And so what the light

  457. of the gospel does

  458. is it shines in

  459. to that darkness,

  460. revealing the truth

  461. of the gospel,

  462. scattering the darkness away.

  463. But it's what Jesus

  464. continues to do

  465. in the process

  466. we call sanctification.

  467. So not only in salvation,

  468. but also in sanctification.

  469. And this is what

  470. makes us uncomfortable.

  471. Because it sounds great

  472. for Jesus to shine

  473. the light of the gospel

  474. into our hearts

  475. initially to scatter

  476. the darkness away,

  477. but that's where we want

  478. him to stop.

  479. But he doesn't.

  480. Because the ministry

  481. of the light

  482. is to scatter

  483. the darkness away

  484. over and over

  485. and over and over again

  486. because he's not comfortable

  487. with us hiding.

  488. If you have a teenager,

  489. you know what this is like

  490. when you flick the light on

  491. early in the morning

  492. and they just start screaming

  493. and put the covers

  494. over their head

  495. because the light

  496. is just too bright

  497. for them early in the morning,

  498. we are comfortable.

  499. We are comfortable

  500. living in the shadows.

  501. And so maybe,

  502. maybe you're hiding now.

  503. You are fearing exposure

  504. in your lives.

  505. And we are very creative

  506. about the way we hide.

  507. We are.

  508. We're very creative.

  509. Even on Sunday mornings,

  510. you look very nice,

  511. by the way.

  512. Everyone looks good.

  513. I wore a suit for you.

  514. We look like we have

  515. our act together today.

  516. We can shake hands

  517. after the service.

  518. How was your week?

  519. Great.

  520. How was yours?

  521. Very good.

  522. Very good.

  523. Good.

  524. Good.

  525. Have a good week.

  526. And that's as far

  527. as we want to go with people

  528. because we don't want people

  529. to know what's really going on.

  530. The things that we are

  531. deathly afraid of.

  532. The issues that keep us up

  533. at night.

  534. The sins that we are hiding

  535. that we, if someone found out

  536. about death, we feel that

  537. we would be undone,

  538. we want to hide.

  539. It's the same sin

  540. from the very beginning.

  541. After the first sin

  542. in Genesis 3,

  543. what did Adam and Eve do?

  544. They jumped behind the bushes

  545. for fear of being exposed.

  546. And so the first thing

  547. we have to see

  548. that the light does

  549. is it scatters

  550. the darkness away

  551. and it's something

  552. that he is very committed to.

  553. Jesus wants to shine

  554. the light

  555. into our darkened stories

  556. in order for us

  557. to not just be exposed

  558. but in order for us

  559. to be healed.

  560. Because there is no healing

  561. in the shadows.

  562. Jesus shines the light

  563. of the gospel

  564. into the darkest places

  565. of our lives

  566. so that we will be freed

  567. from the bondage,

  568. loved and accepted

  569. and experience his grace

  570. and his mercy.

  571. that we will be happy

  572. and healthy.

  573. And so he wants us

  574. to be exposed

  575. in order to be healed.

  576. And so the second thing

  577. that the light does,

  578. it scatters the darkness away

  579. but also the light

  580. reveals a path.

  581. Parents of young children

  582. know this to be true

  583. more than anyone else.

  584. I experienced it

  585. just this week.

  586. You know,

  587. the middle of the night,

  588. like 3 a.m.

  589. when that scream comes

  590. from the bedroom

  591. and you take off

  592. across the house

  593. to figure out

  594. what's going on

  595. with one of your kids

  596. and then that Lego.

  597. Y'all are there.

  598. You know it.

  599. Or the torturous

  600. hardened head

  601. of that Barbie doll

  602. and you step on it.

  603. It's very simple.

  604. I don't do

  605. very good illustrations.

  606. My illustrations

  607. are very simple.

  608. What do we need to do?

  609. You turn on the light

  610. to see the path

  611. to walk through.

  612. That's what light does

  613. is it gives us

  614. a healthy path

  615. to walk in.

  616. Here's the second thing

  617. that the light

  618. of the gospel

  619. does for us

  620. is it shows us

  621. where to move.

  622. When Jesus says,

  623. I am the light

  624. of the world,

  625. He is shining a light

  626. into the dark places

  627. so that the truth

  628. of God

  629. will radiate

  630. in the midst of it.

  631. You may feel

  632. that you're in a dark

  633. and directionless place

  634. right now

  635. in your own home

  636. or in your life.

  637. You're unsure

  638. about the future.

  639. Maybe something's going on

  640. in your career

  641. or in your job.

  642. You don't quite know

  643. where to go.

  644. This is something

  645. we deal with regularly

  646. with our students,

  647. especially our seniors.

  648. We have a senior dinner

  649. tonight

  650. and many of them

  651. are still jobless.

  652. Graduation's here

  653. in a week and a half,

  654. two weeks from today,

  655. I think.

  656. They're jobless.

  657. They don't know

  658. what's ahead.

  659. There's a lot of pressure

  660. on college students

  661. to get it figured out.

  662. Even your freshman year,

  663. you've got to get

  664. your major down.

  665. You've got to get

  666. that co-op lined up

  667. so that you will have

  668. the career of your dreams

  669. at age 22

  670. and you better have

  671. your family life

  672. planned out then too.

  673. If you don't meet

  674. your mate by your senior year,

  675. you're doomed.

  676. That's not true.

  677. That's just the idea

  678. that our culture

  679. keeps telling our…

  680. It's not true, students.

  681. There's this pressure

  682. that we feel

  683. we have to have

  684. it all figured out

  685. and some of you

  686. may be there even now

  687. feeling the pressure.

  688. We need to know

  689. that the light

  690. of the gospel

  691. is shining

  692. the path of God

  693. for our lives,

  694. that He leads us,

  695. He cares for us,

  696. He leads us

  697. through His Word,

  698. He leads us

  699. through His Spirit,

  700. and He leads us

  701. through His church.

  702. Even as a church,

  703. maybe you feel there now.

  704. I enjoy talking

  705. with different members

  706. of your search committee

  707. recently

  708. and just hearing

  709. of how the process

  710. is going.

  711. You've got a great

  712. search committee

  713. put in place,

  714. but even as a church,

  715. maybe you're wondering

  716. what is the future.

  717. You need to know

  718. that just as the

  719. cloud by day

  720. and the fire by night

  721. was a continual reminder

  722. of God's people

  723. that He was with them,

  724. that He was leading them

  725. and guiding them

  726. and protecting them,

  727. Jesus,

  728. as the light of the gospel,

  729. is the continual reminder

  730. that we can look to

  731. to see that Jesus

  732. is with us,

  733. that He cares

  734. more than we do

  735. about the future

  736. of this church

  737. and of your family,

  738. of your children.

  739. Jesus cares

  740. and He is leading

  741. and He is guiding

  742. and He is protecting.

  743. One scholar

  744. named Hendrickson

  745. who I love to read a lot

  746. on New Testament works,

  747. he says on this passage,

  748. he said,

  749. to the ignorant,

  750. Jesus proclaims wisdom.

  751. To the impure,

  752. He proclaims holiness.

  753. To those in sadness,

  754. He proclaims gladness.

  755. We could expand

  756. on this too, right?

  757. To those in despair,

  758. Jesus proclaims hope.

  759. To the lonely,

  760. He proclaims the presence

  761. and the love of God.

  762. To the broken,

  763. He brings healing.

  764. To the fearful,

  765. He brings comfort.

  766. This is the ministry

  767. of the light.

  768. Bringing hope and holiness,

  769. life and godliness,

  770. joy and meaning

  771. and purpose

  772. and the very presence

  773. of God

  774. into the darkness.

  775. And many of you know

  776. that it is in the darkness

  777. that the light shines

  778. most bright.

  779. And some of you

  780. are sitting in that darkness now

  781. and that is where

  782. the light of the gospel

  783. will begin to glow.

  784. It's like riding

  785. in the back country roads

  786. late at night.

  787. You see the stars

  788. like never before.

  789. Some of you are there

  790. even now

  791. and that's where

  792. the light of the gospel

  793. will shine most bright.

  794. This is what Jesus

  795. is committed to.

  796. This is His mission.

  797. It's really interesting to me

  798. where this passage

  799. is stuck in John's gospel.

  800. I was just reading

  801. through this yesterday

  802. and it struck me

  803. that right before this passage,

  804. right before Jesus says,

  805. I am the light of the world,

  806. He turns to an adulterous,

  807. sinful woman

  808. who is about to be

  809. stoned to death.

  810. That's the passage

  811. just before this.

  812. And He looks at her

  813. and He says,

  814. I do not condemn you.

  815. Go and sin no more.

  816. And then just after

  817. this passage

  818. is when Jesus heals

  819. the man born blind.

  820. Do you remember this story

  821. where this young man

  822. was blind

  823. and the Pharisees

  824. were trying to trick Jesus

  825. and they were asking Him,

  826. why is He blind?

  827. Is it because of His sin

  828. or the sin of His parents?

  829. And Jesus says,

  830. neither.

  831. You're wrong on both accounts.

  832. I'll tell you why

  833. this man was born blind

  834. so that the works of God

  835. may be made manifest

  836. in His life.

  837. And Jesus heals him

  838. through this incredible miracle

  839. in the way He heals him.

  840. And for the first time,

  841. this man sees light.

  842. And Jesus looks at him

  843. and He says,

  844. do you see me?

  845. I am the light of the world.

  846. Here's what's interesting.

  847. Book ended on this

  848. John chapter 8 revelation

    John 8 chapter mention

  849. of Jesus saying,

  850. I am the light of the world

  851. is a woman forgiven

  852. of her sins

  853. and a man healed

  854. of his blindness.

  855. The mission of the light

  856. of Jesus

  857. is that He is uninterested

  858. in leaving us in our sins.

  859. and what He is committed to

  860. is giving us sight.

  861. And He will not stop

  862. until that happens.

  863. How does Jesus

  864. do those two things?

  865. Very briefly,

  866. and I want to end

  867. with this picture.

  868. How does the light

  869. accomplish His mission?

  870. By entering

  871. into the darkness.

  872. And I don't just mean

  873. into the world.

  874. It's true that the incarnation

  875. is Jesus leaving

  876. the comforts of heaven

  877. and entering into

  878. the darkness of the earth.

  879. That is very true

  880. and that's how He identifies

  881. with us in our own sin

  882. and our own struggle.

  883. He enters into the darkness.

  884. But remember that we said

  885. that the light of God

  886. in the Old Testament

  887. meant the presence of God

  888. and the guidance of God

  889. for His people?

  890. It's the same today,

  891. but we've got to see

  892. that the light went out

  893. for a moment.

  894. The light had to actually

  895. go out for the moment

  896. in order for us

  897. to know the light

  898. of the world

  899. in our own lives.

  900. And here's what I mean.

  901. Do you remember the scene?

  902. The scene on the day

  903. that the light went out

  904. when Jesus hung on the cross

  905. and the darkness came over

  906. the face of the earth.

  907. There's a moment

  908. where this post-tornado darkness

  909. covered the face of the earth

  910. once again.

  911. And it was at this moment

  912. that Jesus somehow

  913. lost the presence

  914. of the Father for a time.

  915. I don't know

  916. what all that means.

  917. I went to seminary.

  918. I studied stuff.

  919. I don't get it.

  920. But I know that the light

  921. went out for a moment.

  922. The only way

  923. that we will ever see

  924. a glimmer of light

  925. in our darkness

  926. is to see that Jesus,

  927. the light,

  928. took on the full extent

  929. of our darkness

  930. when He took on the cross.

  931. that He went into the darkness

  932. so that we could be delivered

  933. from it.

  934. That the presence of the Father

  935. left Jesus for a time

  936. so that we would know

  937. the abiding presence

  938. of the Father

  939. for all of eternity.

  940. And this is why Jesus can promise,

  941. I am the light of the world.

  942. Whoever follows me

  943. will never walk in darkness,

  944. but will have the light of life.

  945. So do you believe Him?

  946. If you've been looking for light

  947. to fill your darkness,

  948. and we have,

  949. look no further

  950. than the light

  951. that Jesus offers.

  952. If you're a Christian

  953. and you're in hiding,

  954. hide no more.

  955. If you're unclear

  956. about where to go

  957. in your life,

  958. look to the light,

  959. the guiding light of God

  960. to lead you.

  961. And maybe for some of you,

  962. you've never experienced

  963. the healing power

  964. of the gospel

  965. for the first time.

  966. You've always seen Jesus

  967. as someone

  968. who's just kind of against you.

  969. I want you to hear

  970. that the light of the world

  971. promises to heal

  972. your brokenheartedness.

  973. He promises to save you

  974. from the darkness

  975. that you find yourself in.

  976. Trust in the light

  977. of the gospel

  978. for your own salvation.

  979. Some of you may be thinking

  980. that you're hiding even now

  981. and you found creative ways

  982. to do it.

  983. You need to remember

  984. that sometimes

  985. we have to be exposed

  986. in order to be healed.

  987. We have to be brought out

  988. from behind the bushes

  989. in order to be

  990. in the presence

  991. of the Father once again.

  992. Maybe you're confused.

  993. You're hurting.

  994. You're directionless.

  995. The light of the comforting

  996. presence of God

  997. is to remember

  998. that He is near.

  999. The resurrection

  1000. gives us great hope

  1001. to know

  1002. that the presence

  1003. of the Father

  1004. has not left us

1005. but He is ever with us.

  1006. and it helps us

  1007. in our darkness.

  1008. Let me just say

  1009. that this isn't

  1010. the last time

  1011. Jesus says

  1012. I am the light

  1013. of the world.

  1014. Actually,

  1015. it's not even

  1016. the last time

  1017. He uses the phrase

1018. the light of the world.

  1019. I want to end

  1020. with this application.

  1021. It's really amazing

  1022. to me that

  1023. even though Jesus

  1024. says that

  1025. He is the light

  1026. of the world

  1027. and that we need

  1028. His light

  1029. to shine into

  1030. our darkness

  1031. to scatter

  1032. the darkness away

  1033. and to bring healing,

  1034. He actually tells us

  1035. that He's not

  1036. in this mission alone.

  1037. Because in one

  1038. of the other Gospels

  1039. when Jesus was preaching

1040. in the Sermon on the Mount,

  1041. even though here

  1042. He says

  1043. I am the light

  1044. of the world

1045. in the Sermon on the Mount,

  1046. He says something

  1047. remarkably different.

1048. You know what He says?

  1049. He says,

  1050. you are the light

  1051. of the world.

  1052. That's a very strange

  1053. thing to say.

  1054. If we've been talking

  1055. about what Jesus

  1056. is the light

  1057. of the world does

  1058. and now He looks

  1059. at His people

  1060. and He says,

  1061. and you are

1062. the light of the world.

  1063. He said,

  1064. a town built on a hill

  1065. cannot be hidden.

  1066. Neither do people

  1067. light a lamp

1068. and put it under a bowl.

  1069. Instead,

1070. they put it on a stand

  1071. and it gives light

1072. to everyone in the house.

  1073. In the same way,

  1074. let your light

  1075. shine before others

  1076. that they may see

  1077. your good deeds

  1078. and glorify your Father

  1079. in heaven.

  1080. If you've been invited

  1081. into the light,

  1082. Jesus now turns

  1083. and says,

  1084. and you are

  1085. the light.

  1086. This has significant

  1087. implication for us

  1088. on a personal level

1089. and on a corporate level.

1090. that God has called you

  1091. to be the light

  1092. of the world

  1093. in your workplace,

  1094. whether that's

  1095. on the Arsenal

  1096. or in Huntsville Hospital

1097. or in the school system.

1098. That God has called you

  1099. to that place

1100. to be a shining beacon

  1101. of light

  1102. to point others

  1103. toward where healing

  1104. comes from.

  1105. In your home,

1106. one of the hardest places

1107. it is to be light,

  1108. right?

  1109. God calls us

  1110. to shine the light

  1111. into the darkness

1112. even in our own homes

  1113. to point our children

  1114. and our spouses

  1115. toward the one

  1116. who heals,

1117. the one who brings us

  1118. out of hiding,

  1119. the one who works

  1120. on our behalf.

  1121. Even as a church,

  1122. this has tremendous

  1123. applications.

1124. That God has called you

  1125. here to South Huntsville

  1126. and Southwood

  1127. has a rich history

  1128. of impacting

  1129. this community

  1130. and even people

  1131. all across the country

1132. and all across the world

  1133. have been impacted

  1134. by the ministry

  1135. of Southwood Presbyterian Church.

  1136. As you move in

  1137. and you're in this

  1138. transitional kind of phase

  1139. looking forward,

  1140. God has called you

  1141. to be a light

  1142. pointing people

  1143. over and over again

  1144. to the healing

  1145. that Jesus brings,

  1146. relational healing,

  1147. healing from our own

  1148. sins and sorrows

  1149. into the darkness

  1150. where God speaks.

  1151. He's called you

  1152. to proclaim

1153. the light of the gospel

  1154. to this community.

  1155. Jesus is the light

  1156. of the world

  1157. shining the hope

  1158. of His gospel

  1159. into the daily darkness

  1160. of our lives

  1161. and He invites us

  1162. to be the light

  1163. of the world

  1164. shining the hope

  1165. of the gospel

  1166. into the daily lives

1167. of the people around us.

  1168. understand it was

  1169. maybe eight or nine

  1170. days later

  1171. after the storms

  1172. hit

  1173. that the lights

  1174. came back on

1175. and as I came in

  1176. a year later

  1177. I noticed that

  1178. this community

  1179. seemed different

  1180. because of the events

  1181. of what just happened

  1182. over the last year.

  1183. The numbers of people

  1184. who lost their lives

  1185. and the families

  1186. that were affected

1187. and the loss of property

  1188. and even the fears

  1189. that just set in

  1190. to your lives

  1191. every time you hear

  1192. every time you hear

  1193. that storm sound

  1194. once again

  1195. but eventually

1196. the lights came back on

  1197. and everything

  1198. was different.

  1199. You've been through

  1200. darkness somewhere

  1201. in your lives

  1202. in your community

  1203. and your home

  1204. now you see

  1205. that the light

  1206. of Jesus

  1207. shines even brighter.

  1208. Let others see

1209. the light of the gospel

  1210. too.

  1211. Let's pray.

  1212. Let's pray.

  1213. Jesus, you are committed.

  1214. You are committed

  1215. to bringing us

  1216. out of darkness.

  1217. Jesus, you are committed

  1218. that our sin

  1219. would not have

  1220. the final say
