  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. It's the heart of what we're going to be talking about together this morning.

  5. We're in Ephesians chapter 4.

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  6. Ephesians 4, we've hit the midway point of the book of Ephesians.

  7. And this morning we're actually at a hinge point in Ephesians.

  8. And thus far, as we've gone through, we'll do a little bit of review.

  9. What's happened in the first three chapters is that Paul has given us this rich theology

  10. where he's extolling the grandeur of God's love and grace.

  11. He's explaining the life-transforming reality that through Jesus,

  12. those of us least deserving of being in God's presence are connected to God by faith.

  13. Those of us labeled enemy are now seated at the king's table with name tags that say connected to Jesus.

  14. Paul has explained how all the power, all the work, all the glory for this are all God's.

  15. Because we're saved by grace alone, he says.

  16. And so he's talked about how being connected to God connects us also to each other.

  17. Jews and Gentiles in the same family, one temple being built up.

  18. Because what's most important about them, remember, is not their personal religious pedigree.

  19. It's the fact that they're connected to Jesus.

  20. That's what's most important.

  21. So some of the richest theological teaching in all of the Scripture on the grace of God,

  22. on the process of salvation, on the nature of the church.

  23. And then we hit chapter 4.

  24. Listen to what Paul's going to do as he makes all that great theology, practical theology.

  25. Ephesians 4 at verse 1.

  26. Hear God's holy word.

  27. I, therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called,

  28. with all humility and gentleness, with patience bearing with one another in love,

  29. eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

  30. There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call,

  31. one Lord, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all,

  32. who is over all and through all and in all.

  33. The grass withers, the flowers fade, but these words of our God will indeed stand forever.

  34. Pray with me.

  35. Father, as these are your words,

  36. and as what we need is to hear from you rather than from a man,

  37. we ask that you would speak.

  38. Would you speak to our hearts clearly?

  39. Would you take eyes that are easily blind and allow them to see?

  40. Would you take hearts that wander after other things and give us a heart for you?

  41. Renew our affections after Jesus.

  42. Would you do that by your Spirit?

  43. We ask in Jesus' name.

  44. Amen.

  45. Amen.

  46. I still remember holding my first child in the hospital.

  47. I remember being overwhelmed with joy,

  48. thinking things like,

  49. how in the world could I love a little baby like this so much?

  50. And also thinking,

  51. I think this changes everything.

  52. I had no idea.

  53. Listen, I love my girls.

  54. And what I'm about to say does not change that.

  55. It's bad when you start this way, isn't it?

  56. And something bad is coming.

  57. This doesn't take away from that at all.

  58. But they've changed everything about my life.

  59. That's what happens, right?

  60. We love them so much and, not but,

  61. and it's often hard to remember life without them.

  62. Christy and I have had this happen several times on a vacation or a date

  63. where it's just the two of us.

  64. And we try to think back only seven years for us.

  65. And what did we do in the evenings back then?

  66. How did we make decisions?

  67. Like, what did we talk about when that happened?

  68. And what happened was that everything changed.

  69. The reality of becoming a parent changes not just your tax filing,

  70. but everything, right?

  71. Sleep schedules are altered.

  72. Your daily plan is changed.

  73. You suddenly follow school rezoning decisions very closely.

  74. Where are we going to be?

  75. Where will the kids be?

  76. Eating out for dinner is so much more complicated.

  77. It was already hard enough to decide where you wanted to go,

  78. but now you're also asking,

  79. where are the kids going to be able to make it through the meal

  80. without being too disruptive so we can get in and get out?

  81. And what will they like to eat?

  82. You have to live all of life as a parent, right?

  83. Many of you have also experienced the life-altering reality of parenthood.

  84. Some of you have felt or seen the impact of a lifestyle-altering diagnosis.

  85. The reality, for example, of having an allergy.

  86. That means not just a line on my medical form,

  87. but it means every grocery store and restaurant I go to,

  88. I need ingredient lists and details about what I can and can't eat.

  89. It means now nothing with peanut butter near me or no milk products.

  90. I don't know how some of you manage it, honestly,

  91. if I couldn't eat peanut butter.

  92. But you have to start thinking about everything you do in light of that.

  93. Every moment you live as someone with the allergy

  94. or whatever it is that you're dealing with.

  95. Some of you have felt life being altered

  96. when you put on glasses for the first time

  97. and all of a sudden you saw everything differently.

  98. You didn't realize you could actually see the person over there

  99. or the sign on the road was something you could read.

  100. And all of a sudden, there it is.

  101. Everything looks different.

  102. Or you're coming out of school and you got a job for the first time

  103. and you thought it was just going to be a job,

  104. but now your schedule is completely altered.

  105. Your relationships are different.

  106. Your flexibility seems to be gone overnight.

  107. All of life has changed.

  108. We all know what it means to have one particular reality

  109. that alters the rest of life.

  110. To live the rest of life in light of one reality.

  111. That's what Paul is going to say in the second half of Ephesians.

  112. All this glorious theology,

  113. all these wonderful truths that I've been talking about

  114. actually alters all of life.

  115. It's doctrine with a purpose.

  116. Look at verse 1.

  117. What does he say?

  118. I, therefore, a prisoner of the Lord,

  119. urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling

  120. to which you've been called.

  121. Therefore.

  122. Therefore, he says a great word, therefore.

  123. Walk in a way, because of all of the things that you've heard,

  124. walk in a way that fits with that.

  125. Live a life that fits with the reality of who you are

  126. and what God has done for you.

  127. In light of all the wonderful good news that I've told you about,

  128. here's what your life should look like.

  129. That word translated worthy is not do enough,

  130. be good enough, try hard enough,

  131. but it's telling us to live in a way that's fitting,

  132. that's appropriate, that's commensurate with the reality of who we are,

  133. with the calling we've received.

  134. What fits with this?

  135. Live in a way that fits with what God has done,

  136. the salvation that you have been given by His grace.

  137. Interestingly, in the first three chapters of Ephesians,

  138. you know how many commands Paul gives to the church?

  139. Three full chapters, 50-some verses, one command.

  140. In chapter 2, he tells them to remember some things.

  141. Remember.

  142. That's the only command they get for three chapters.

  143. The commands are going to start coming fast and furious now.

  144. As you think through the next three chapters of Ephesians,

  145. Paul's going to say things like,

  146. Submit.

  147. Obey.

  148. Love.

  149. Put on.

  150. Stand firm.

  151. Be kind.

  152. Forgive.

  153. Do not get drunk.

  154. Keep alert.

  155. Speak truth.

  156. And many, many more we're going to hit in the next few weeks.

  157. He's about to tell us what life should look like

  158. in light of our new reality.

  159. And this is not unusual for Paul, if you know his letters, right?

  160. This is how Paul often operates.

  161. The truth he teaches always has practical implications.

  162. And likewise, he always roots his moral commands back in rich theology.

  163. In each letter, he tells both what is true,

  164. he does that first,

  165. and what to do next in light of that.

  166. Romans, for example, has 11 chapters of intense theology,

  167. wonderful doctrines.

  168. And chapter 12, verse 1 says,

  169. Therefore, in view of God's mercy,

  170. offer your bodies as living sacrifices.

  171. And there he goes telling us what it looks like.

  172. Galatians has four chapters on the doctrines of grace.

  173. And chapter 5, verse 1 says,

  174. Therefore, stand firm.

  175. This is not just Paul.

  176. This is the biblical pattern, right?

  177. That we've seen over and over.

  178. God's grace comes first.

  179. Always.

  180. God's grace first.

  181. And you never leave it.

  182. You never outgrow it.

  183. You never pass beyond it.

  184. It's not moving away from the doctrine,

  185. away from God's grace onto something else.

  186. God's grace motivates and empowers our behavior.

  187. That's biblical Christianity,

  188. because Jesus changes everything.

  189. The nature of his grace is that it meets us where we are,

  190. but it also doesn't leave us where we are, right?

  191. It meets us there.

  192. We don't have to clean ourselves up, look better.

  193. God's grace comes to us,

  194. but it's a transformative grace.

  195. One that doesn't leave us where we are,

  196. but makes us new and changes all of life.

  197. So it's vital that we keep our doctrine and our duty,

  198. our preaching and our practice connected to each other.

  199. Some of us love learning, right?

  200. We love the new book, another class to take.

  201. I'm excited.

  202. I can't wait to do that.

  203. But it never makes much difference in how we live.

  204. We can deliver a great lecture on love,

  205. but we don't show it much.

  206. And that's no good.

  207. Others of us haven't read a book since we were in school,

  208. and we only read the ones that were required then.

  209. But we scorn doctrine.

  210. We say it only matters how we live.

  211. Just be moral.

  212. Just love people.

  213. Isn't that really what matters?

  214. But the Bible says no.

  215. Be good for goodness sake falls short of biblical Christianity,

  216. because it skips the heart and the relationship with God that God so desires.

  217. We've got to keep those two connected to each other.

  218. So that's what you're going to continue to hear

  219. as we go through the rest of Ephesians together.

  220. Paul is not leaving doctrine behind in order to get practical.

  221. Paul is explaining what a life lived in light of the truths

  222. that he's been teaching us looks like.

  223. It's one of the reasons you hear us talk a lot at Southwood

  224. about experiencing and expressing grace.

  225. That's our mission, right?

  226. Both experience God's grace and express it.

  227. That both of those are necessary together.

  228. We have to hear and receive and feast on God's grace for ourselves,

  229. and we have to share it with others.

  230. Either one without the other is anemic Christianity

  231. or no Christianity at all.

  232. That's why, for example, Sunday school and serving the poor

  233. are both important.

  234. They don't work against each other.

  235. They work together.

  236. So here's where Paul's headed.

  237. He's going to walk into your workplace.

  238. He wants to sit at your dinner table.

  239. He wants to talk about your relationships with the world around you.

  240. He wants to hone in on your speech,

  241. on your marriage,

  242. on your marriage,

  243. on our church life.

  244. And one at a time,

  245. he's going to work his way through some of those things

  246. because Jesus changes everything,

  247. all of them.

  248. And when we say that in 21st century America,

  249. we get a little bit uncomfortable, don't we?

  250. We've individualized and privatized our religion so much at every chance we get.

  251. So that what we think is normal is this,

  252. that religious people say,

  253. Jesus changes Sunday morning.

  254. The super spiritual,

  255. the really the most religious friends I have

  256. would say,

  257. Jesus changes Sunday

  258. and one hour of every other day of the week.

  259. But the Bible says,

  260. Jesus changes everything,

  261. every moment of every day.

  262. He's not a side dish to fill out your life.

  263. The truth of Jesus is life altering.

  264. Everything changes now

  265. because he's redeeming and renewing all of it,

  266. all of life.

  267. All of it is his.

  268. Just like becoming a parent,

  269. having an allergy,

  270. getting a job,

  271. everything changes now.

  272. And I'll be honest with you and myself,

  273. there are a lot of days I'm really not sure I'm up for that.

  274. I'm really not that interested.

  275. In fact,

  276. I don't have the bandwidth for it.

  277. I feel like I just,

  278. I don't have the time or the energy

  279. to stop and think about how Jesus shows up here.

  280. I just,

  281. there's some things that need to get done.

  282. I know some things that are really important to me

  283. and I just don't really care

  284. to stop and to put in the effort to think,

  285. what does Jesus have to say about my marriage

  286. or my money

  287. or my job?

  288. Anybody else ever felt that way?

  289. Am I the only one that sometimes feels like,

  290. man,

  291. there's just so much

  292. and I already know most of what I need.

  293. I don't really need to know what Jesus says about this.

  294. Can I just do some things?

  295. But Jesus won't share his glory

  296. with my idols.

  297. Jesus won't allow me

  298. to talk like a Christian on Sunday

  299. and ignore him on Monday

  300. and avoid what he loves.

  301. Jesus loves me too much

  302. to let me shipwreck myself

  303. by leaving him out of my life.

  304. He doesn't want me to miss

  305. what he created and redeemed me for.

  306. He wants to see me flourish

  307. and honor him in all of life

  308. for his glory

  309. because it's also what's best for me.

  310. That's why he says,

  311. I urge you to walk in a manner

  312. worthy of the calling

  313. to which you've been called.

  314. I know what's best for you.

  315. I'm calling you to something.

  316. Walk in a way that fits

  317. with the great gifts I've given you,

  318. with the great things

  319. that I've done for you.

  320. So buckle up.

  321. Ephesians part two.

  322. Practical theology.

  323. Subtitle.

  324. Paul the theologian

  325. becomes Paul the meddler.

  326. Today, in the rest of our passage,

  327. he begins with one area

  328. that's already been a big theme

  329. in Ephesians.

  330. It's unity.

  331. He wants to start

  332. by talking about unity.

  333. He's going to begin right here

  334. in the church

  335. and he's going to say,

  336. Jesus has already

  337. united you to each other.

  338. Now live out the unity

  339. that already exists.

  340. That's what he's going to tell us

  341. in the rest of this passage.

  342. Look at verses four to six.

  343. He's reminding us of what's true.

  344. There's one body,

  345. one spirit.

  346. You were called to the one hope

  347. that belongs to it.

  348. One Lord,

  349. one faith,

  350. one baptism,

  351. one God and Father of all

  352. who is over all

  353. and through all and in all.

  354. That's not what he hopes

  355. will happen one day.

  356. That's already true, right?

  357. He's reminding us of that.

  358. Seven times there's that one.

  359. What you share in common,

  360. what you all have

  361. because there's one of it

  362. is more important

  363. than your differences.

  364. You're in one family

  365. because having Jesus

  366. for your brother

  367. means you have the same father

  368. and are indwelt

  369. by the same spirit.

  370. It's what Jesus does

  371. when we're connected to him.

  372. He makes us family.

  373. Remember how Paul told us

  374. he did that back in chapter two?

  375. Jesus,

  376. Jesus himself is our peace.

  377. He is the one

  378. who's made us both one,

  379. took the two

  380. and made them one.

  381. He did it

  382. by breaking down in his flesh

  383. the dividing wall of hostility.

  384. He was creating in himself

  385. one new man

  386. in place of the two,

  387. so making peace

  388. and reconciling both of us

  389. to God in one body

  390. through the cross

  391. where he killed

  392. the hostility.

  393. He preached peace

  394. to those far off

  395. and those who were near

  396. and through him

  397. we both

  398. have access

  399. in one spirit

  400. to the Father.

  401. Jews and Gentiles,

  402. those who've known Jesus

  403. a long time

  404. and those who met him yesterday

  405. are one.

  406. They have one father.

  407. They're in the same family,

  408. especially through the cross.

  409. That's what Jesus did for us,

  410. right?

  411. He made this true.

  412. So the call for the church

  413. here in our passage

  414. is not to fabricate

  415. togetherness out of nothing,

  416. to try to act like

  417. there's something

  418. we have in common,

  419. but rather to reflect

  420. what's already true.

  421. We're in the same family,

  422. like it or not.

  423. You may get to choose

  424. your friends,

  425. but family is family,

  426. right?

  427. We're already connected,

  428. but do we act like it?

  429. Does the way we live

  430. reflect the biblical reality?

  431. That's the question for us.

  432. Paul says,

  433. I'll tell you what it looks like

  434. when you practically live out

  435. that Jesus has connected you

  436. to each other

  437. in the same family.

  438. You're eager to maintain

  439. the unity of the Spirit

  440. in the bond of peace.

  441. You long for that.

  442. You work for that.

  443. You're eager.

  444. Eager to maintain.

  445. Notice,

  446. not create it,

  447. but maintain

  448. what already is true,

  449. the unity of the Spirit.

  450. That sounds a lot like

  451. our last membership vow,

  452. doesn't it?

  453. We're promising

  454. to study the purity

  455. and the peace

  456. of the church,

  457. to work proactively

  458. and intently

  459. toward her unity.

  460. We're eager,

  461. not just don't sow discord,

  462. although that's

  463. certainly important,

  464. but positively,

  465. we're supposed to be

  466. working towards peace,

  467. longing to see it come.

  468. in our relationships.

  469. How?

  470. How?

  471. What's that going to look like?

  472. With all humility

  473. and gentleness.

  474. Verse 2.

  475. With all humility

  476. and gentleness.

  477. That only makes sense

  478. when your salvation

  479. is all of grace.

  480. Be humble.

  481. Think less of yourself

  482. because you make much

  483. of Jesus.

  484. When the focus of your heart

  485. is on what He had to do

  486. to rescue someone like you

  487. from yourself,

  488. you begin to be humbled.

  489. You do begin to think

  490. of yourself less

  491. and can therefore be gentle

  492. rather than harsh

  493. with others.

  494. Think about the connection there.

  495. Who is it that you speak

  496. harshly about?

  497. Be honest with yourself.

  498. When you're by yourself,

  499. when they're not around

  500. and you let your hair down

  501. and you say what you really feel,

  502. who gets the harsh criticism?

  503. Think of that person.

  504. Think of the words you say.

  505. Isn't it because,

  506. at least in the area

  507. that you're criticizing them,

  508. you feel superior?

  509. More worthy, perhaps.

  510. You wouldn't say it,

  511. but honestly,

  512. more holy.

  513. Can you believe

  514. what she said

  515. about her kids,

  516. about her friends,

  517. about her church?

  518. Can you believe

  519. what they decided

  520. about Sunday school,

  521. about schooling their kids,

  522. about VBS?

  523. Can you believe?

  524. Can you believe

  525. implies you can't believe it

  526. because you're better

  527. than they are.

  528. You would never do,

  529. think,

  530. say such a thing.

  531. What brother or sister

  532. are you treating harshly

  533. because you've forgotten

  534. you're no better

  535. than he is?

  536. Paul reminds us

  537. that in this regard,

  538. walking in a manner

  539. worthy of the calling

  540. we've received

  541. involves deep humility,

  542. knowing who we really are.

  543. You're not the one

  544. who figured it out first,

  545. right?

  546. You were dead

  547. and he made you alive.

  548. That's how the call worked.

  549. That calling we received

  550. came that way

  551. to a dead person

  552. that God made alive.

  553. The good works you've done

  554. were planned ahead of time

  555. by him

  556. for you to walk in them.

  557. All the glory goes to him,

  558. so don't think you're better

  559. than your brother or sister.

  560. Jesus thought

  561. they were valuable enough

  562. to die for.

  563. Have you decided

  564. they're worth less

  565. than you?

  566. So making every effort

  567. to live out our unity

  568. looks like humility

  569. and gentleness.

  570. And then Paul says

  571. it looks like patience

  572. and love,

  573. the end of verse 2.

  574. The idea behind the word

  575. for patience here

  576. has a long-term perspective

  577. that one would be

  578. long-suffering.

  579. I love how Pastor

  580. Sinclair Ferguson

  581. says it.

  582. He says,

  583. this is taking

  584. a long-term view,

  585. especially when things

  586. go wrong.

  587. That's really what

  588. it has in mind.

  589. It assumes disappointment,

  590. offense,

  591. conflict,

  592. but it urges us

  593. to bear with one another,

  594. to stay in relationship

  595. rather than bail,

  596. to suffer hurt

  597. but respond with blessing

  598. time and again.

  599. And that requires

  600. a long-term perspective,

  601. doesn't it?

  602. It doesn't make sense

  603. in the moment.

  604. It requires

  605. a long-term perspective

  606. because when I'm acting

  607. ugly to you,

  608. you have to believe

  609. that Jesus is

  610. making me beautiful

  611. or else you're done

  612. with me.

  613. In the moment,

  614. I'm ugly

  615. and you see it

  616. and you know it.

  617. You have to believe

  618. Jesus is making me

  619. beautiful

  620. because when I hurt you,

  621. you have to actually

  622. believe that

  623. Jesus is going

  624. to heal all that hurt

  625. rather than it feeling

  626. better to hurt back

  627. in the moment.

  628. A longer-term perspective.

  629. Because when I continue

  630. to be that kind of person

  631. you can't stand,

  632. you have to believe

  633. that I'm more family

  634. that you're stuck with forever

  635. than a friend you can drop

  636. at no cost to yourself.

  637. Have you ever had

  638. that conversation

  639. with your kids?

  640. If you've got more

  641. than one kid,

  642. you may have had

  643. this conversation.

  644. I, of course,

  645. haven't,

  646. but you've said to them

  647. something like,

  648. hey, y'all are sisters.

  649. Don't treat your sister

  650. that way.

  651. You shouldn't speak

  652. that way to anybody,

  653. but especially not

  654. your sister.

  655. She'll be your sister

  656. forever.

  657. I mean,

  658. you may move

  659. and your friends

  660. may move

  661. or you may develop

  662. a new group of friends,

  663. but she'll always

  664. be your sister.

  665. Right?

  666. That relationship

  667. is valuable.

  668. It's lasting.

  669. That's the long-term

  670. kind of view

  671. in all of our relationships

  672. with each other

  673. that being patient

  674. and bearing with one another

  675. in love calls for.

  676. In Christ,

  677. these really are

  678. your brothers and sisters.

  679. You really will be with them

  680. long-term.

  681. And when I say that already,

  682. all the objections

  683. in your head are starting.

  684. Oh, yeah,

  685. that's sweet and nice,

  686. but biological family

  687. is different

  688. from spiritual family.

  689. Don't make it seem.

  690. I know those objections

  691. because I've heard them

  692. and because I've thought them.

  693. But I say to you,

  694. the biblical,

  695. spiritual reality

  696. is more true

  697. and longer lasting

  698. than the other.

  699. You have one Savior.

  700. And so you have one Father.

  701. And it really does matter

  702. that they're your brothers

  703. and sisters forever.

  704. And that's really hard

  705. for us to think about

  706. in a Bible Belt culture

  707. where there's churches everywhere

  708. and our culture says

  709. church is something

  710. you approach

  711. as a consumer commodity.

  712. You go look down

  713. the menu of churches

  714. in your town

  715. and find the one

  716. that is most,

  717. where the people there

  718. are most like you

  719. and it best serves

  720. your needs.

  721. That's what church is,

  722. our culture says.

  723. Very rarely do you hear

  724. people talking about

  725. wanting church

  726. to be a place

  727. where you find

  728. hard people to love.

  729. When you hear that,

  730. it's not a compliment.

  731. Usually it's a complaint,

  732. right?

  733. That's what it means

  734. when we say it now.

  735. Oh, man,

  736. I don't fit with them.

  737. They're hard.

  738. They're difficult.

  739. Who are you unwilling

  740. to admit to yourself

  741. as family forever?

  742. Here's what we do.

  743. Instead of being eager

  744. to maintain

  745. the unity of the Spirit,

  746. we harbor bitterness

  747. rather than forgive,

  748. don't we?

  749. God says,

  750. same family.

  751. Don't live at odds

  752. with someone

  753. I've connected you to.

  754. Bear with them

  755. when they fail.

  756. Be humble

  757. because you'll fail next.

  758. Instead of being eager

  759. to maintain

  760. the unity of the Spirit,

  761. we care only

  762. about our own church.

  763. Listen,

  764. this passage

  765. isn't anti-denominations.

  766. That's not what it's saying.

  767. It doesn't say

  768. we'll all think

  769. and act the same

  770. about every issue.

  771. But it does say

  772. same family

  773. to other Presbyterians,

  774. to Baptists,

  775. to Methodists,

  776. to non-denominationalists,

  777. to Pentecostals.

  778. Do you remember

  779. what's most important

  780. Paul says?

  781. Are you able

  782. to major on the majors

  783. so that you can love

  784. and work

  785. and cheer for others

  786. who go to another church?

  787. And then perhaps

  788. the epidemic problem

  789. in my generation

  790. in America.

  791. Instead of being eager

  792. to maintain

  793. the unity

  794. of the Spirit,

  795. we're not living

  796. at odds

  797. with other Christians.

  798. Why?

  799. Because we're not living

  800. with other Christians

  801. at all.

  802. Because that's become

  803. the new thing, right?

  804. I'm not leaving Jesus.

  805. The institutional church,

  806. on the other hand,

  807. is quite another matter.

  808. We disconnect

  809. in a split second

  810. rather than doing

  811. the hard work

  812. to stay engaged.

  813. And that can happen

  814. at any age,

  815. but those of us

  816. who are younger

  817. are really,

  818. really good at it.

  819. We usually think

  820. we know better.

  821. And those of us

  822. in the church

  823. need to begin

  824. by admitting

  825. that they have

  826. some really valid concerns.

  827. They often offer

  828. really true critiques,

  829. don't they?

  830. They look at the church

  831. and they love Jesus

  832. and many churches

  833. are full of people

  834. who've lost

  835. their passion for Jesus

  836. if they ever had it.

  837. Who've lost

  838. the priority

  839. of gospel ministry

  840. and seem content

  841. just to make themselves

  842. comfortable and peaceful.

  843. So I see why

  844. the Jesus-loving

  845. individualist wants out.

  846. Why would I sit

  847. in there with them?

  848. And to be honest,

  849. God doesn't want

  850. the church to stay

  851. stuck there either.

  852. He calls us to repent

  853. and regain the love

  854. we had at first,

  855. right?

  856. But,

  857. unity does demand

  858. that we not give up

  859. on the church

  860. even at her worst.

  861. Why?

  862. Because God hasn't.

  863. God says to those

  864. in the church,

  865. same family,

  866. even the ones

  867. that don't seem

  868. to get it,

  869. and the church

  870. may be ugly at times,

  871. but she's Jesus' bride.

  872. When we disengage

  873. because of our

  874. perhaps accurate critiques

  875. of the church,

  876. we too miss

  877. the biblical vision

  878. of humble and gentle,

  879. patient and loving

  880. community

  881. of what it really means

  882. to be family.

  883. But you might be thinking,

  884. I'd never choose

  885. to be in a small group

  886. with them.

  887. They're so awkward.

  888. And how could I ever

  889. trust her again

  890. after the way

  891. she betrayed me?

  892. Theologian D.A. Carson

  893. says this about the church.

  894. He says,

  895. ideally,

  896. notice that word,

  897. ideally.

  898. This is the way

  899. it should be.

  900. The church is made up

  901. of natural enemies.

  902. What binds us together

  903. is not common education,

  904. race,

  905. income levels,

  906. politics,

  907. nationalities,

  908. accents,

  909. jobs.

  910. Christians come together

  911. because they've all

  912. been loved by Jesus himself.

  913. They're a band

  914. of natural enemies

  915. who love one another

  916. for Jesus' sake.

  917. Ideally,

  918. that's what the church is.

  919. That's the way

  920. it's supposed to be.

  921. That's why Jesus

  922. called Jews and Gentiles

  923. together into his church,

  924. right?

  925. That wasn't an accident.

  926. He wasn't forced to.

  927. Why did he make it that way?

  928. Why did he bring together

  929. a band of natural enemies?

  930. Because how else

  931. could they display

  932. the love of God?

  933. How else could they

  934. show the world

  935. the love of a God

  936. who sacrificed himself

  937. for his natural enemies?

  938. He wanted to be

  939. in relationship

  940. with them enough

  941. that he sent his son

  942. to the cross

  943. for people he should,

  944. by all regards,

  945. have had nothing

  946. to do with.

  947. And so he sets us up

  948. in the church

  949. and designs the church

  950. to be a place

  951. where we find people

  952. we'd otherwise have

  953. nothing to do with.

  954. And he says,

  955. be eager to be connected

  956. to them.

  957. Work hard on it.

  958. Be patient.

  959. Bear up with one another

  960. when you rub against each other

  961. the wrong way.

  962. The church is the place

  963. where we have the chance

  964. to be patient

  965. as God has been patient

  966. with us.

  967. To love and bear

  968. with one another

  969. in love

  970. as he has stuck with us

  971. and continued to love us.

  972. It shouldn't surprise us

  973. when that is needed

  974. to stay connected

  975. to each other

  976. in the church.

  977. That's not shocking.

  978. That's the way

  979. he designed it.

  980. It's hard.

  981. It's needed

  982. that we bear

  983. with each other.

  984. It's needed

  985. that we suffer long,

  986. that we're humble

  987. and gentle.

  988. And it's not easy.

  989. But it's worth it.

  990. Unity may not sound

  991. real exciting to you.

  992. I just want to go hear

  993. about unity today.

  994. That'd be good.

  995. That applies to my life.

  996. Unity.

  997. You'd probably rather hear

  998. something on marriage

  999. or the armor of God

  1000. and we're getting there.

  1001. Those are coming.

1002. But while it may not

1003. seem real important to us,

1004. it was at the top

  1005. of Jesus' list

  1006. for his followers,

  1007. wasn't it?

  1008. When Jesus prayed,

  1009. what did he want

  1010. for those who would

  1011. believe in him?

1012. He came before the Father

  1013. pouring out his heart

  1014. in the garden

  1015. in John 17.

  1016. Do you remember it?

  1017. He prays for them

1018. that they may all be one.

1019. It gets close to using one

  1020. as many times

  1021. as Ephesians 4,

  1022. but not quite.

  1023. Just as you, Father,

  1024. are in me

  1025. and I in you,

1026. that they also may be in us.

  1027. Why?

1028. Why does he want us

  1029. to be one?

  1030. So that the world

  1031. may believe

1032. that you have sent me.

1033. The glory you've given me,

  1034. I've given to them.

1035. That they may be one

1036. even as we are one.

  1037. I in them

  1038. and you in me,

  1039. that they may become

  1040. perfectly one.

  1041. Why?

  1042. So that the world

  1043. may know

  1044. that you sent me

1045. and that you loved them

1046. even as you loved me.

  1047. Oneness,

  1048. unity,

  1049. so that the world

  1050. will believe

  1051. Jesus is God

1052. and that he loves them.

  1053. Don't you want them

  1054. to know that?

1055. Don't you want the people

  1056. you care about

1057. to know Jesus is God

  1058. and he loves them?

  1059. The one thing

  1060. we're called to

  1061. so that people

  1062. will see and believe

  1063. that a holy God

  1064. loves sinful,

  1065. hostile people,

  1066. that that would be

1067. the truest story of all

  1068. is loving each other

  1069. like that.

  1070. Church,

  1071. Jesus has connected you

  1072. to each other.

  1073. He's picked

  1074. your family.

  1075. Now live out

  1076. the unity

  1077. that already exists.

  1078. By this,

  1079. all men will know

  1080. that you're my disciples.

  1081. If you formally

  1082. stay together

  1083. in one denomination,

  1084. no.

  1085. If your church

  1086. never splits,

  1087. no.

  1088. If you always look,

  1089. sing, pray,

  1090. and minister

  1091. exactly the same way,

  1092. no.

1093. If in all the diversity,

  1094. all the mess,

  1095. and all the brokenness,

  1096. you still love

  1097. one another.

  1098. Father,

  1099. forgive us.

  1100. We don't long

  1101. for that

1102. as much as we long

  1103. for getting

  1104. what we want,

  1105. for having things

  1106. our way.
