  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. Good morning. It is an honor and privilege for me to be here representing Mission to the World.

  4. And before we hear God's Word, I just want to offer a heartfelt thank you to Southwood

  5. for supporting Mission to the World missionaries and for your prayers and our joint commitment in seeing the Great Commission go forth to all the world.

  6. Our scripture passage today comes from the book of Matthew chapter 5.

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  7. I'm sorry, chapter 6.

  8. It's a very familiar passage and I'll be reading from verses 5 through 10,

  9. really focusing on the last two verses of the Lord's Prayer.

  10. I'm describing the first three petitions of the Lord's Prayer, but I wanted to read some of the context as well.

  11. So if you have your Bibles, please turn to Matthew 6, verses 5 through 10, or you can see it up on the screen.

    Matthew 6:5–10

  12. This is God's very own Word.

  13. And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites, for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners,

  14. that they may be seen by others.

  15. Truly I say to you, they have received their reward.

  16. But when you pray, go into your room, shut the door, and pray to your Father who is in secret.

  17. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

  18. And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do,

  19. for they think that they will be heard for their many words.

  20. Do not be like them.

  21. For your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.

  22. Pray then like this.

  23. Our Father in heaven,

  24. hallowed be your name.

  25. Your kingdom come.

  26. May God add His blessings to the reading of His Word.

  27. Please join me in a quick prayer before we hear the message.

  28. Lord, we just pray for Your Holy Spirit

  29. to come and to fill our time now,

  30. that You would help us to understand Your Word.

  31. And help me, Father, please, to speak faithfully from Your Word.

  32. In Jesus' name, amen.

  33. We were doing our family devotions one night, as we often do,

  34. and it was my turn to pray the Lord's Prayer,

  35. which we do each time we do our devotions.

  36. And this particular night, I said to myself,

  37. tonight I am going to pray so intentionally every phrase in the Lord's Prayer.

  38. I'm not going to just run through it from memory like I normally do.

  39. I want to think about each word

  40. so that my kids can kind of see a model of this prayer.

  41. Well, I got to about the third phrase, and there was a pause.

  42. I forgot the next line.

  43. The kids started giggling.

  44. I must have been really tired, I think, that night.

  45. And my kids had a field day with me.

  46. Good job, pastor, missionary, coordinator.

  47. Don't even know the Lord's Prayer.

  48. I've always thought it was ironic

  49. how Jesus teaches His disciples not to pray repetitiously.

  50. But almost every week, we pray this prayer He's taught us

  51. very repetitiously, almost mindlessly, religiously.

  52. Well, the passage that we examined, that we read,

  53. comes in the context of Jesus' disciples asking Him how to pray.

  54. And after teaching His disciples how not to pray,

  55. Jesus gives this model prayer.

  56. But what is presupposed in this prayer

  57. is a completely different way of looking at life

  58. and our relationship with God.

  59. You see, Jesus doesn't want us simply to utter this prayer mindlessly,

  60. repetitiously,

  61. but to adopt the worldview,

  62. the set of values,

  63. the kingdom perspective that this prayer assumes.

  64. And you see, it's this perspective

  65. that's almost behind this prayer

  66. that helps shape,

  67. I'm sorry,

  68. helps shape our sense of purpose

  69. and our direction in life.

  70. And it also informs our collective call to world missions.

  71. And so today,

  72. we're going to be looking at

  73. the first three phrases in this prayer,

  74. the opening address,

  75. Our Father.

  76. And then second,

  77. Hallowed be Your name.

  78. And finally,

  79. Your kingdom come,

  80. Your will be done on earth

  81. as it is in heaven.

  82. Well, what is the first thing that we pray?

  83. Our Father in heaven.

  84. And what is presupposed is that we have

  85. a relationship with God

  86. as Father.

  87. You see, earlier in this chapter,

  88. Jesus speaks against the hypocrites

  89. who prayed in order to be what?

  90. He'd be seen by men.

  91. You see, their problem was

  92. they didn't have a genuine relationship

  93. with God as Father.

  94. And even though they were religious,

  95. their religion didn't go beyond

  96. their culture.

  97. They were just acting as if they knew God.

  98. And so what we must recognize

  99. before anything else

  100. is the fact that we cannot engage

  101. in any meaningful way

  102. with mission.

  103. Or for that matter,

  104. have any lasting peace or joy

  105. in our hearts

  106. unless

  107. we have a relationship with God

  108. as our Father.

  109. You see, much of the striving

  110. that we experience in life,

  111. whether we are conscious of it or not,

  112. is really a striving to reconnect

  113. with the One who has made us,

  114. the One who has created us.

  115. And so this prayer assumes

  116. that we have a relationship

  117. with God as our Father.

  118. But maybe there are some

  119. here today

  120. who do not yet know God

  121. as their Father.

  122. And I'm speaking particularly

  123. to the young people

  124. here in the church

  125. because you see,

  126. having a genuine relationship

  127. with God as Father

  128. is different from

  129. just growing up in the church.

  130. It's different from just

  131. knowing the right answers

  132. to your Sunday school questions

  133. or even saying

  134. the sinner's prayer.

  135. Having a genuine relationship

  136. with God as your Father

  137. is only possible

  138. by the Holy Spirit

  139. changing us

  140. from the inside out.

  141. It's a spirit

  142. that convicts you

  143. of your sins,

  144. leads us to repentance

  145. and faith,

  146. helps make sense

  147. of the Bible.

  148. And it fills us

  149. with the fruit

  150. of the Spirit,

  151. with love,

  152. with joy,

  153. with peace,

  154. patience,

  155. kindness,

  156. goodness,

  157. faithfulness,

  158. gentleness,

  159. and self-control.

  160. It is the Spirit

  161. that guides us

  162. and comforts us

  163. in life

  164. and adopts us

  165. as the children of God

  166. and enables us

  167. to cry out to God,

  168. what?

  169. Abba.

  170. Father.

  171. Father.

  172. So do you know

  173. the Father?

  174. One of Ernest Hemingway's

  175. short stories

  176. tells of this

  177. Spanish father

  178. who decided

  179. to reconcile

  180. with his son.

  181. Son had run away

  182. to the big city

  183. of Madrid

  184. and the father

  185. wanting to reconcile

  186. with his son,

  187. remorseful,

  188. took out an ad

  189. in the El Liberal

  190. newspaper

  191. hoping that his son

  192. who had run away

  193. to Madrid

  194. would read the paper

  195. and understand

  196. his heart.

  197. And so he took out

  198. this ad

  199. in this paper

  200. and he wrote

  201. Paco,

  202. that was his son's name,

  203. meet me at

  204. Hotel Montagna

  205. noon Tuesday.

  206. Paco is a common name

  207. in Spain

  208. and so when the father

  209. went to the square

  210. he found 800 young men

  211. named Paco

  212. waiting to be reconciled

  213. with their father.

  214. Hemingway strikes

  215. a chord in our hearts

  216. with this story.

  217. What child doesn't

  218. want to be reconciled

  219. with his father?

  220. What child does not

  221. want to be in good

  222. fellowship

  223. with his father?

  224. Now if this is true

  225. with our earthly fathers,

  226. how much more

  227. is it true

  228. with our heavenly father?

  229. The Gospel of John

  230. tells us

  231. that all who receive Jesus,

  232. those who believe

  233. in his name,

  234. call upon his name,

  235. will be given

  236. the right to be called

  237. the children of God.

  238. You see,

  239. all of our prayers,

  240. all of our religion

  241. is worthless

  242. if we do not have

  243. a genuine relationship

  244. with God.

  245. And so if you have

  246. not yet received

  247. Jesus

  248. or called upon

  249. his name

  250. for the forgiveness

  251. of your sins,

  252. do not wait

  253. another day,

  254. don't wait

  255. another minute.

  256. Turn to him

  257. in faith

  258. and repentance.

  259. Our father

  260. calls to us

  261. to come to him

  262. and he writes

  263. to us in the Gospel,

  264. all is forgiven.

  265. Love, Papa.

  266. Now the second phrase

  267. assumes that our life purpose

  268. is not to hallow

  269. our name

  270. but to hallow

  271. God's name.

  272. It's not about

  273. our reputation,

  274. it's about

  275. his reputation.

  276. It's not about

  277. our glory,

  278. it's about

  279. his glory.

  280. You see,

  281. the Pharisees

  282. and scribes

  283. prayed in order

  284. to be what?

  285. to be seen

  286. by men.

  287. What does this mean?

  288. It means that

  289. they were more

  290. concerned about

  291. their own

  292. reputation,

  293. their own name.

  294. They wanted others

  295. to speak well

  296. of them

  297. or to

  298. hallow

  299. their name.

  300. Jesus tells us

  301. that our orientation

  302. in life

  303. as the children

  304. of God

  305. is not to

  306. hallow our name

  307. but to hallow

  308. his.

  309. And so we exist

  310. to honor,

  311. to glorify,

  312. to build up

  313. the name

  314. of our God

  315. rather than

  316. our own.

  317. But you see,

  318. it's much harder

  319. than it sounds.

  320. This past January

  321. there was a

  322. Mission to the World

  323. mission conference

  324. on the west coast

  325. in the sunny city

  326. of San Diego.

  327. It was a very special,

  328. it still is,

  329. very special city

  330. to me

  331. and to my wife.

  332. We used to live

  333. in San Diego

  334. for several years.

  335. It's where I went

  336. to seminary,

  337. where I served

  338. in the presbytery,

  339. where my wife

  340. went to medical school,

  341. where we had friends.

  342. And so I thought

  343. finally I get to go

  344. to a place

  345. where people

  346. will know my

  347. name.

  348. I was one of the

  349. speakers in the conference

  350. and so I go

  351. to register

  352. and I

  353. come to the desk

  354. and they say,

  355. well,

  356. what's your name?

  357. I said,

  358. well,

  359. my name's Lloyd Kim.

  360. Surely expecting

  361. they would recognize

  362. at least that I was

  363. a speaker

  364. and they said,

  365. oh,

  366. okay,

  367. here,

  368. here's your packet.

  369. I was so offended.

  370. During that conference,

  371. the worship,

  372. guest worship leader

  373. came down

  374. and he did a great job

  375. and I said,

  376. you know what,

  377. I just really wanted

  378. to thank you.

  379. Just did an amazing job.

  380. And he said,

  381. well,

  382. thank you

  383. and tell me again,

  384. what's your role

  385. around here?

  386. I said,

  387. well,

  388. I'm kind of a speaker

  389. and,

  390. you know,

  391. coordinate things

  392. with missions of the world.

  393. Needless to say,

  394. I was also again humbled

  395. by that.

  396. Finally,

  397. the last day

  398. of the conference,

  399. I was rushing in.

  400. I was a little bit late.

  401. I didn't have my

  402. conference tag on

  403. and as I was going

  404. through the doors,

  405. someone stopped me

  406. and said,

  407. did you register?

  408. They thought I was

  409. trying to freeload.

  410. Needless to say,

  411. God was telling me

  412. something about

  413. my own preoccupation

  414. with my name.

  415. Jesus teaches us

  416. to pray,

  417. hallowed be your name.

  418. But how often

  419. do we live out the prayer,

  420. hallowed be my name.

  421. But you see,

  422. this phrase also has

  423. a missions thrust.

  424. For we are asking God

  425. that He would make

  426. His name hallowed.

  427. The reason that we go,

  428. the reason that we send

  429. people to the nations

  430. is because the nations

  431. are not yet

  432. hallowing

  433. the name of our God.

  434. And so,

  435. we pray that those

  436. who do not yet know

  437. the name of our God

  438. from every tribe,

  439. from every tongue,

  440. from every nation,

  441. would come to know Him

  442. as Father

  443. and would also

  444. hallow His name.

  445. The final phrase

  446. we'll discuss today

  447. is,

  448. your kingdom come.

  449. Your will be done

  450. on earth

  451. as it is in heaven.

  452. Now,

  453. what would be the opposite?

  454. My kingdom come,

  455. right?

  456. My will be done.

  457. This is what Jesus

  458. was speaking against

  459. when He criticized

  460. those who would pray

  461. repetitiously,

  462. thinking that they would

  463. be heard

  464. for their many words.

  465. What were these people

  466. trying to do?

  467. They're trying

  468. to manipulate God

  469. to give them

  470. what they want,

  471. to accomplish

  472. their will

  473. above all else,

  474. thinking they would

  475. be heard

  476. for their many words.

  477. But you see,

  478. our Lord wants us

  479. to orient our life

  480. away from our own

  481. personal agenda,

  482. our own kingdom,

  483. towards His agenda

  484. and kingdom.

  485. wisdom.

  486. This is what it means

  487. to be a follower

  488. of Jesus,

  489. a disciple of Christ.

  490. People have often

  491. asked me,

  492. Lloyd,

  493. what is your vision?

  494. What is your vision

  495. for mission

  496. to the world?

  497. And I often respond,

  498. pretty simple for me,

  499. my vision is

  500. Jesus' vision.

  501. What did Jesus

  502. want to see?

  503. What did He preach?

  504. preach, repent for the what?

  505. The kingdom of God

  506. is at hand.

  507. How is He teaching us

  508. to pray?

  509. Thy kingdom come,

  510. Thy will be done

  511. on earth

  512. as it is in heaven.

  513. Jesus' vision was

  514. to see God's rule

  515. and reign

  516. fill the earth.

  517. He wants to see

  518. the heavenly kingdom

  519. come

  520. to the earth.

  521. This isn't just

  522. a prayer for the

  523. second coming,

  524. which we certainly

  525. desire,

  526. but a prayer for the

  527. power and the presence

  528. of God

  529. to be known

  530. even today

  531. here on earth

  532. as it is in heaven.

  533. And we ask,

  534. well, what does

  535. this kingdom look like?

  536. In any kingdom

  537. you need citizens.

  538. And so when a person

  539. repents and believes

  540. in the gospel,

  541. submits himself

  542. to the king,

  543. the kingdom advances.

  544. And when the church

  545. lives out the ethics

  546. of the kingdom,

  547. an ethic of radical

  548. self-sacrifice,

  549. surrender,

  550. and submission

  551. to the king,

  552. when the church

  553. lives out this ethic,

  554. the kingdom of God

  555. is here.

  556. And when those

  557. from every tribe

  558. and every tongue

  559. and every nation

  560. worship the Father,

  561. the kingdom of God

  562. has come.

  563. This is the vision

  564. of our Lord

  565. Jesus Christ.

  566. Is this our vision?

  567. Is this Southwood's vision?

  568. After a speaking event,

  569. a young college student

  570. came up to me

  571. and she thanked me

  572. for the message

  573. and then she went on

  574. to share how

  575. how her mother

  576. had passed away

  577. just a month before.

  578. She started crying.

  579. She said it was

  580. an accident,

  581. something that could

  582. have been prevented.

  583. And she simply

  584. couldn't understand

  585. why God would

  586. take her mother away.

  587. She had,

  588. this young woman

  589. had just given

  590. her life to Jesus

  591. several months

  592. before this.

  593. And then she looked

  594. at me and she said,

  595. but now,

  596. Pastor,

  597. I realize

  598. he wants everything,

  599. even my mother.

  600. And I'm okay with it.

  601. I looked at her

  602. and I said,

  603. your faith

  604. and your submission

  605. demonstrates God's

  606. rule and reign

  607. in your life.

  608. It's a picture

  609. of the kingdom of God.

  610. You have encouraged

  611. and strengthened

  612. my faith

  613. more than you know.

  614. You see,

  615. our Lord teaches

  616. us to pray

  617. that God's

  618. will be done

  619. on earth

  620. as it is

  621. in heaven.

  622. Because in heaven

  623. there are no tears.

  624. There is no sorrow,

  625. no sickness,

  626. no injustice,

  627. no corruption,

  628. no abuse,

  629. no brokenness,

  630. no sin,

  631. and no death.

  632. And so when we pray

  633. this prayer,

  634. we are praying

  635. that Satan's kingdom

  636. would be destroyed

  637. and that the gospel

  638. would go throughout

  639. the world

  640. and that the church

  641. would grow

  642. in grace

  643. and in holiness

  644. and that Christ's reign

  645. would indeed extend

  646. to the ends of the earth

  647. and that He would return

  648. in glory.

  649. We pray

  650. that people

  651. lost in hopelessness

  652. would find hope,

  653. that marriages

  654. that are broken

  655. would be mended

  656. by grace,

  657. and that the glory

  658. of God

  659. would indeed

  660. fill the earth.

  661. Beloved,

  662. Jesus teaches us

  663. to pray this way

  664. because

  665. that's how He prayed.

  666. He says,

  667. Our Father.

  668. He considers us

  669. His brothers

  670. and His sisters.

  671. He prays,

  672. Hallowed be

  673. Thy name

  674. when His own name

  675. is mocked

  676. and ridiculed.

  677. He prays,

  678. Thy kingdom come,

  679. Thy will be done,

  680. and then establishes

  681. the very kingdom

  682. by submitting

  683. to the Father's will.

  684. Remember how He asked

  685. the Father

  686. to take

  687. the bitter cup

  688. from Him

  689. in the garden

  690. of Gethsemane,

  691. but then prayed

  692. with resolution,

  693. not

  694. My will be done,

  695. but Thine.

  696. What did it mean

  697. for Jesus

  698. to pray this prayer?

  699. It meant that

  700. He would willingly give,

  701. willingly sacrifice,

  702. and submit

  703. to the suffering

  704. and pain

  705. of the cross.

  706. Jesus gave up

  707. everything

  708. for the kingdom,

  709. and He calls us

  710. to do the same.

  711. What are the implications

  712. of this kingdom prayer?

  713. The implications

  714. are that we would live

  715. wholeheartedly

  716. for the kingdom,

  717. submitting to our King,

  718. seeking to advance

  719. His will,

  720. and His name

  721. above all else.

  722. And you see,

  723. this is where missions

  724. comes in.

  725. Our great commission

  726. mandate to go

  727. and make disciples

  728. of all the nations

  729. is the means

  730. by which the kingdom

  731. of God advances.

  732. And so,

  733. if we want to see

  734. this vision of our Lord

  735. come about,

  736. we need to take seriously

  737. our mission

  738. in sending

  739. and supporting

  740. and going

  741. to the nations

  742. with the good news

  743. of the kingdom

  744. of God.

  745. Every dollar given,

  746. every prayer

  747. lifted up,

  748. every person sent

  749. or project supported

  750. for missions

  751. testifies

  752. that the kingdom

  753. of God

  754. is real.

  755. It declares

  756. to the world

  757. that we submit

  758. to a living King

  759. who rules the heavens

  760. and the earth,

  761. and it bears witness

  762. that the kingdom

  763. of God

  764. has come

  765. and that we seek

  766. its advancement

  767. here on earth.

  768. Can I suggest

  769. maybe some practical

  770. ways in which

  771. Southwood might consider

  772. being involved

  773. in missions?

  774. It was wonderful

  775. last night

  776. to talk

  777. with Sarah

  778. about what the church

  779. is doing

  780. in the community.

  781. And I would say

  782. amen to that.

  783. those who are engaged

  784. in mission here

  785. will be the best

  786. missionaries

  787. overseas tomorrow.

  788. But one thing

  789. that has been

  790. in my mind

  791. in terms of how

  792. I might encourage

  793. the churches

  794. is to consider

  795. tithing your members.

  796. Oftentimes,

  797. churches give a tithe

  798. to missions,

  799. but very infrequently

  800. would they think

  801. of actually tithing

  802. their members.

  803. And what I mean

  804. by that is

  805. to have as a goal

  806. as a church

  807. to send

  808. 10%

  809. of your congregation

  810. to long-term

  811. foreign missions.

  812. If you have

  813. 500 adults,

  814. consider sending

  815. 50,

  816. 25 unit,

  817. 25 families.

  818. What does this mean

  819. practically?

  820. Instead of waiting

  821. for the one

  822. or two odd members

  823. who feel a personal

  824. call to missions,

  825. the church actually

  826. encourages,

  827. challenges,

  828. and prepares members

  829. to go.

  830. If the mission field

  831. says we need

  832. three families

  833. to start a new

  834. church planting work

  835. in Myanmar,

  836. then the church

  837. begins asking people

  838. in the congregation

  839. to prepare.

  840. For those of you

  841. who are parents,

  842. if you have three kids,

  843. you know,

  844. send one of them.

  845. And don't send

  846. the one you don't like.

  847. That goes for the

  848. church leadership too.

  849. Don't send us

  850. the troublemakers.

  851. Send your best.

  852. Send your elders,

  853. your deacons,

  854. your pastors,

  855. your best evangelists,

  856. your best disciples.

  857. Send them and see

  858. how God will bless

  859. this church.

  860. Maybe you're thinking,

  861. we can't afford

  862. to give away

  863. our people to missions.

  864. We need every soul

  865. to make this church

  866. healthy and strong.

  867. Here's the thing,

  868. beloved.

  869. You can't out-give God.

  870. I've seen it again

  871. and again.

  872. I have a friend

  873. who's a church planter

  874. in Northern California.

  875. He was struggling.

  876. The church was barely

  877. able to support him.

  878. But one of his members

  879. says,

  880. I want to go.

  881. And he wrestled

  882. with it for over a year

  883. but finally he said,

  884. I can't keep you back

  885. and let that family go.

  886. And guess what God

  887. did right after that?

  888. Flooded that church

  889. with new people.

  890. Another church

  891. in Southern California

  892. sent their pastor

  893. to missions.

  894. After he left,

  895. the church grew even more.

  896. It wasn't because

  897. he was a bad pastor.

  898. Afterward,

  899. the church sent an elder

  900. and the church

  901. grew even more.

  902. And finally,

  903. they sent another elder

  904. and the church

  905. grew even still

  906. and then people

  907. didn't want to become

  908. elders at the church

  909. because they thought

  910. if they became an elder

  911. they would have to go

  912. to missions.

  913. missions.

  914. But of course

  915. there is another way

  916. to participate

  917. and that is to go.

  918. Have you ever asked

  919. if the Lord

  920. is calling you

  921. and your family

  922. to go

  923. and invest your life

  924. in making disciples

  925. among the nations?

  926. You see,

  927. Jesus,

  928. he's entrusted us

  929. with the gospel.

  930. And he gives us

  931. authority and power

  932. to proclaim

  933. the good news

  934. of the kingdom.

  935. It's not about us.

  936. And he gives us

  937. his spirit

  938. which enables us

  939. to go forward

  940. with confidence

  941. and if you are afraid,

  942. beloved,

  943. his perfect love

  944. casts out all fear.

  945. Your life

  946. will never be the same.

  947. And so let me ask you,

  948. Southwood,

  949. what is your vision?

  950. may our collective vision

  951. be that the nations

  952. would call upon God

  953. as their father

  954. and that the nations

  955. would hallow

  956. his name

  957. and that indeed

  958. his kingdom

  959. will come

  960. and his will

  961. be done

  962. here on earth

  963. as it is in heaven.

  964. Amen?

  965. Let's pray.

  966. Father,

  967. as we pray

  968. this prayer

  969. week in

  970. and week out,

  971. remind us

  972. of the kingdom

  973. perspective

  974. that this prayer

  975. assumes.

  976. Help us,

  977. Father,

  978. be a people,

  979. your people,

  980. your citizens

  981. living in the kingdom

  982. here on earth,

  983. testifying to the kingdom

  984. in our decisions,

  985. our relationships,

  986. all that we do

  987. and say.

  988. May Southwood

  989. be a church

  990. that truly seeks

  991. your kingdom first.

  992. Amen.

  993. Amen.
