  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. Thank you, gentlemen, and thank you. Thank you for your hospitality in greeting me and my wife

  4. as we have been given the blessing of spending a few days in your fair city and seeing the church

  5. transformed into Vacation Bible School Central. I don't think this was done for the celebration of

  6. my arrival, but I trust that it will be a wonderful greeting to the children as they come through the

  7. week, and we will be praying for you because we have some special grandchildren that will be

  8. participating here. I'd like to ask you to pray for us because as we return home to Memphis this

  9. afternoon, we start Bible school in the morning too, and I have the fifth and sixth grade boys,

  10. and you know what they're like. But it's a wonderful time for us to celebrate. We're actually going to

  11. be doing a Bible curriculum based on the prophet Jonah, and I hear that you all have sometime in

  12. the past done a series on Jonah. In fact, I'm going to borrow this little fella and take him back to

  13. Memphis with me. What's his name? Hanaj? And where did you get that? How did you come up with that name?

  14. It's Jonah's name spelled backwards. Well, isn't that interesting? Because this morning, I want to give

  15. you a backward sermon. So you're one step ahead of me. You already do things backwards. Imagine if you

  16. got up in the morning and you greeted everyone by saying good night, and at the end of the day,

  17. you went to bed and you said good morning. Imagine if you got up in the morning and you ate dinner,

  18. and just before bed you had breakfast. Imagine that you went to school or into the neighborhood and you

  19. chose for 24 hours to walk backwards. Wouldn't that be an odd experience? And yet this morning, what I'm

  20. going to do is you're going to join me in making homiletical history. How many of you have ever

  21. made homiletical history? I didn't think so. In 34 years of preaching at my church, I have never made

  22. homiletical history. But here today on this stage, we will make homiletical history because we are going

  23. to preach a backward sermon. If it flops, Will will be here to clean up the mess. But what I want to do

  24. is I want to preach through the sermon that Jesus preached in Matthew 5, 6, and 7, commonly known as

  25. the Sermon on the Mount. Except for our purposes this morning, we're going to preach it Matthew 7,

  26. 6, and 5. So if you want to use your pew Bibles, you'll find it on pages 812 through 809.

  27. Did you get that? 812 through 809?

  28. Before we start, let's do the most important thing. Let's pray.

  29. Father, as we come to your Word, we want to enjoy the study of your Word and the proclamation of your

  30. truth. But we don't want to make a circus of it. We don't want to take it lightly. We want you to

  31. speak to our hearts and our minds of your great love for us through Jesus Christ our Lord. And we

  32. ask, Father, that you would accomplish your purposes in our hearts this morning, myself included. And we

  33. pray this in Jesus' name. Amen. I love to preach through the Sermon on the Mount because everybody

  34. loves the Sermon on the Mount. After all, who does not love the golden rule? And who does not appreciate

  35. the Lord's Prayer? And who does not memorize the Beatitudes? All of those things and many other

  36. memorable things are contained in these three chapters of Matthew that are called the Sermon on the Mount.

  37. But let's be careful about our approach to this sermon. John MacArthur, and I assume many of you

  38. would recognize that name, says this,

  39. That's an interesting statement. Hell will be filled with people who love the Sermon on the Mount,

  40. who love to hear the Beatitudes read, who love to hear the Lord's Prayer said, who love to abide by the

  41. golden rule, because in their attempt to please God and attain their salvation, they have determined

  42. that the Sermon on the Mount has been given them to show simply the principles of the way to live

  43. the Christian life. If that's the case in your heart, I have good news for you this morning.

  44. Because just as hell will be filled with those who love the Sermon on the Mount,

  45. heaven will be filled with those who have come to understand what Jesus was really saying.

  46. And that's what we want to understand this morning.

  47. We want to begin this sermon as that sermon ends. The closing paragraph of the Sermon on the Mount

  48. really gets our attention. Matthew chapter 7 at verse 24.

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  49. Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house

  50. on the rock. And the rain fell and the floods came and the winds blew and beat on that house,

  51. but it did not fall because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of

  52. mine does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell and

  53. the floods came and the winds blew and beat against that house and it fell and great was the fall of it.

  54. Our children learn the song, the wise man built his house on the rock. And every generation of children

  55. is taught that song. Why? Because we want them to understand the necessity of a firm and solid

  56. foundation for a faithful and fruitful life. But notice there are dangerous warnings attached to this

  57. paragraph. There is a foolish man. There's a collapsing house and great was the fall of it.

  58. There's disappointment and tragedy. If what? If your house is built upon sand.

  59. Now I have a dear friend who just recently said these words to me. I'm going to have to take my wife

  60. down to the coast because every once in a while she needs to get a little sand between her toes.

  61. Are you like that? Every once in a while you need to get to the beach and you need to get a little

  62. bit of sand between your toes. It's good therapy for you. And that may be true about the beach,

  63. but to get a little sand between your toes is not a wise thing according to the Lord Jesus. That's why

  64. he's given us this sermon. That's why he's correcting some misconceptions. That's why he wants to put rock

  65. under our feet, not sand. This sermon is not just a collection of wise sayings. It's a matter of life and

  66. death, standing or falling, success or failure, victory or defeat, even heaven or hell. Do you see why I'm

  67. starting at the end? This paragraph gets our attention that we might realize what's at stake in this sermon.

  68. So let's get the sand out from between our toes this morning. Let's listen to this sermon and try to

  69. truly discern what's on our Lord's heart. And let's begin, of course, at chapter 7.

  70. In chapter 7, Jesus describes it this way, our world is filled with people who make false assumptions and

  71. live with false hopes. False assumptions, false hopes. As Jesus preaches, he realizes he's surrounded by

  72. people whose feet are firmly planted in the sand, not rock, on lies, not truth. They may not know it,

  73. they may not admit it, they may be blind to it, but that is the truth. How so? First, they're traveling

  74. on the wrong highway. Notice verses 13 and 14 of chapter 7. Jesus says, enter by the narrow gate,

  75. for the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many.

  76. For the gate is narrow, the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.

  77. This is vacation season. Imagine the disappointment of preparing for vacation and leaving for vacation

  78. and moving out on vacation only to take a few wrong turns, and you end up in the middle of nowhere.

  79. Not your intended destination.

  80. As Will grew up, I'm not going to belabor the Will stories with you this morning, but this is a good spot for one.

  81. As Will grew up, he was admired by many people.

  82. He gave counsel to friends, but there was one area of counsel he was never asked for.

  83. Directions.

  84. He was directionally challenged.

  85. The GPS was an answer to prayer.

  86. If you use one, you can thank Will for that, because we never knew when he left the house

  87. whether he would get to his destination.

  88. Jesus is talking about that in this passage.

  89. Imagine leaving and living on a highway that doesn't get you to the right place.

  90. Multiply that by a thousand and consider the tragedy of living your whole life

  91. climbing the ladder of success

  92. only to find that the ladder is leaning against the wrong wall at the end.

  93. False assumptions

  94. can lead to disastrous results.

  95. But not only are they traveling on the wrong highway,

  96. they are trusting in the wrong object.

  97. They have hope and confidence.

  98. They have expectation.

  99. But it's not in the right object.

  100. Notice chapter 7 at verse 21.

  101. Not everyone who says to me, Lord, Lord, will enter the kingdom of heaven,

  102. but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

  103. On that day, many will say to me, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name

  104. and cast out demons in your name and do mighty works in your name?

  105. And then I will declare to them, I never knew you.

  106. Depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.

  107. Again, another surprise.

  108. First, it's a large company traveling down a wide road

  109. that when they get to the end of that road, it's destruction.

  110. And now it's people who have actively been at work in the life of the church

  111. who are told that he never knew them.

  112. Depart from me.

  113. Maybe we could paraphrase it this way.

  114. Lord, Lord, I served in VBS, remember?

  115. I went on a mission trip to Peru.

  116. I was active in the youth ministry.

  117. I volunteered at Lincoln Village.

  118. I was even ordained to office.

  119. What if Jesus took those claims and threw them out of court?

  120. Have any of you read Bunyan's Pilgrim's Progress?

  121. Hands?

  122. Pilgrim's Progress?

  123. You know how it ends?

  124. You remember how it ends?

  125. It's a glorious...

  126. You've got to read the ending.

  127. The glorious arrival of Christian and hopeful into the celestial city.

  128. And the incredible description of the glory of the place.

  129. Such that Bunyan says,

  130. When I had seen it,

  131. I wish I had been among them.

  132. But if you've read it,

  133. you know that that's not the end.

  134. Because there's another couple of paragraphs that follow that description.

  135. When Bunyan says,

  136. Another man crossed the river of death.

  137. And another man climbed the mountain to the gate of the celestial city.

  138. And another man sought to enter therein.

  139. And he was asked for his certificate.

  140. And he had none.

  141. And he was not let in.

  142. In fact, he was led away.

  143. And this is how Pilgrim's Progress ends.

  144. And I saw that there was a way to hell even from the gates of heaven.

  145. Wow.

  146. Jesus gets our attention in this seventh chapter.

  147. He's describing the tragic situation of people who think they are Christians but are not.

  148. Who think they are headed to heaven but are denied entrance.

  149. Who think they are standing on the rock when in fact they are on the sand destined to collapse.

  150. Not to stand.

  151. Well then we need to hear more.

  152. What do we learn if we move back to chapter 6?

  153. What do we learn from that chapter?

  154. We learn this.

  155. Our world is filled with people whose bodies are at church but whose hearts are in the world.

  156. Church is definitely a part of their life.

  157. But upon closer examination,

  158. we see that they claim to trust God but their hearts are flooded with anxiety.

  159. They're people whose lives are filled with worry and fret and fear and doubt.

  160. Chapter 6 at verse 25.

  161. Therefore I tell you,

  162. do not be anxious about your life,

  163. what you will eat or what you will drink,

  164. nor about your body,

  165. what you will put on.

  166. Verse 27.

  167. And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to a span of life?

  168. And why are you anxious about clothing?

  169. Verse 31.

  170. Therefore do not be anxious,

  171. saying what shall we eat or what shall we drink or what shall we wear?

  172. For the Gentiles seek after all these things.

  173. Anxious, anxious, anxious,

  174. Jesus preaches to them

  175. because he's seen through their smiles

  176. and he's examined their hearts.

  177. They claim to trust God,

  178. but they fail the eye test,

  179. how they live and think and speak.

  180. They don't sleep at night

  181. and they don't relax during the day.

  182. The future scares them

  183. and the present frustrates them.

  184. They claim to trust God,

  185. but their hearts are anxious.

  186. They claim to worship God,

  187. but they crave the approval of man.

  188. Chapter 6 and verse 1.

  189. Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people

  190. in order to be seen by them.

  191. They do a lot of good things for the wrong reasons.

  192. And Jesus goes into a discussion of giving

  193. and follows that with a discussion of praying

  194. and then digs even deeper

  195. and speaks to those who fast.

  196. Givers, prayers, fasters,

  197. doing all the right things

  198. for the wrong motivation

  199. to be seen by men.

  200. And then they claim to value God,

  201. but they treasure the things of earth.

  202. Chapter 6, verse 19.

  203. Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth

  204. where moth and rust destroy

  205. and where thieves break in and steal,

  206. but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven

  207. where neither moth nor rust destroys

  208. and where thieves do not break in and steal.

  209. For where your treasure is,

  210. there will your heart be also.

  211. My wife and I have just

  212. started cleaning our attic.

  213. I don't recommend it.

  214. It's really not a lot of fun.

  215. It's very convicting

  216. to see what you treasure,

  217. to see what you've kept,

  218. and how much of it,

  219. how much of it.

  220. We sing in Christ alone,

  221. but do we really live it?

  222. We sing all to Jesus,

  223. I surrender,

  224. but we don't.

  225. We sang this morning,

  226. I'd rather have Jesus

  227. than silver or gold.

  228. I sang that song,

  229. but boy, oh boy,

  230. was that convicting

  231. because I'm not sure I meant it,

  232. and I'm not sure I live it.

  233. We say Jesus is all the world to me,

  234. but you couldn't tell it

  235. by following people for a week

  236. or looking at their checkbooks.

  237. Their bodies are at church,

  238. but their heart is in the world.

  239. Sometimes after preaching,

  240. when I go to the back door,

  241. I have people say things like this,

  242. Preacher,

  243. you were really preaching to me this morning.

  244. You really got me today.

  245. That means I stepped on their toes,

  246. I meddled a bit,

  247. I spoke to a touchy area in their lives.

  248. Well, I can say to Jesus,

  249. you got me today.

  250. This whole subject of where my heart is,

  251. is exposed by Jesus' words.

  252. He's making us examine our hearts,

  253. and I'm not liking what I see,

  254. my selfish attitudes,

  255. my private fears,

  256. my hidden motives.

  257. I live and work and worship in the church,

  258. but that's no guarantee that my heart

  259. isn't still often in the world.

  260. So first, Jesus raises the reality

  261. of false assumptions and false hopes,

  262. and then he identifies the weaknesses

  263. of our hearts and our hidden idols.

  264. Well, we need to hear more.

  265. Finally, moving backwards to chapter 5,

  266. we learn our world is filled with people

  267. who are in desperate need

  268. of a deliverance outside themselves.

  269. Desperate need of deliverance outside themselves.

  270. My guess is you have your favorite TV shows, right?

  271. Your weekly shows that you wouldn't miss.

  272. You record them if you have to be out

  273. so you can see them later.

  274. One of the shows that my wife and I

  275. have gotten into lately is Scorpion.

  276. Any Scorpion watchers in here?

  277. Thank you.

  278. We'll talk after the service.

  279. Scorpion is obviously a very popular show.

  280. It is the story of a group of geniuses.

  281. See, only a few people really can understand it.

  282. A group of geniuses that solve the problems

  283. of national security by their brains.

  284. Okay?

  285. And in one particular episode,

  286. Walter, who is the chief genius,

  287. drives off a cliff

  288. at a high rate of speed.

  289. His car hurtles over the cliff.

  290. It falls about 100 feet.

  291. It's on a precipice,

  292. teetering on this precipice.

  293. And Walter inside is bleeding.

  294. He's been badly injured.

  295. And the Scorpion team realizes

  296. that they have about an hour

  297. to rescue him.

  298. Well, I hate to ruin it for you,

  299. but they do.

  300. They figure out a way

  301. to rescue Walter from this car.

  302. But it really does kind of make you wonder

  303. how in the world

  304. they're ever going to rescue the man

  305. from this horrible predicament.

  306. Well, my friends,

  307. Jesus in chapter 5

  308. is describing man

  309. in an even worse predicament

  310. because it's a spiritual predicament.

  311. And if you study chapter 5,

  312. you'll be amazed

  313. that Jesus demands from us

  314. what no man can deliver.

  315. Have you ever thought about

  316. the gospel that way?

  317. Jesus demands from us

  318. what we cannot deliver.

  319. Notice in verse 20 of chapter 5,

  320. he says,

  321. for I tell you,

  322. unless your righteousness

  323. exceeds that of the scribes

  324. and Pharisees,

  325. you will never enter

  326. the kingdom of heaven.

  327. That ought to blow you away.

  328. You want to go to the kingdom

  329. of heaven, right?

  330. But he says,

  331. you will never enter

  332. the kingdom of heaven

  333. unless your righteousness

  334. exceeds that

  335. of the scribes and Pharisees.

  336. Now, the problem is

  337. the Pharisees and the scribes

  338. were the poster children

  339. of what righteousness

  340. was all about.

  341. How in the world

  342. could the average ordinary guy

  343. have a righteousness

  344. that exceeds that

  345. of the scribes and Pharisees?

  346. Then to make matters worse,

  347. he begins a series of explanation

  348. of Old Testament commands

  349. describing how true righteousness

  350. must include not just

  351. the letter of the law,

  352. but the spirit of the law.

  353. He says,

  354. you've heard that it was said

  355. you shall not kill,

  356. but I tell you,

  357. you shall not even be angry.

  358. You've heard that it was said

  359. you shall not commit adultery,

  360. but I tell you

  361. that if you even lust in your heart,

  362. you've committed adultery.

  363. So Jesus takes the definition

  364. of righteousness

  365. and expands it

  366. to proportions

  367. that no man can reach.

  368. And then if he's just not satisfied

  369. with that,

  370. at the end of the chapter,

  371. verse 48,

  372. he just puts it simply,

  373. you therefore must be perfect

  374. as your heavenly Father

  375. is perfect.

  376. If anybody thought

  377. they had passed

  378. the first two measures,

  379. he gets them on the third.

  380. You've just got to be perfect.

  381. Great!

  382. The kingdom of heaven

  383. is a hopeless wish,

  384. right?

  385. Well,

  386. he then goes on to promise

  387. what no one can imagine.

  388. In the Beatitudes,

  389. Jesus speaks of those

  390. who possess the kingdom of heaven,

  391. inherit the earth,

  392. receive mercy,

  393. are satisfied.

  394. they'll see God,

  395. be called the sons of God.

  396. Great is their reward

  397. in heaven.

  398. Now I'm really confused

  399. because he's just set me up

  400. for failure,

  401. but at the same time

  402. told me that it's possible

  403. to have all these

  404. wonderful blessings.

  405. What's he saying?

  406. What's he mean?

  407. How can the incredible demands

  408. of God

  409. be met with the incredible

  410. blessings of God?

  411. Well,

  412. it all starts

  413. with empty hands,

  414. not impressive performances.

  415. Chapter 5,

  416. verse 3,

  417. blessed

  418. are the poor in spirit.

  419. It starts

  420. by admitting

  421. you can't,

  422. not guaranteeing

  423. that you will.

  424. Years ago,

  425. I heard this description

  426. by Max Licato.

  427. you don't impress

  428. the officials at NASA

  429. with a paper airplane.

  430. You don't boast

  431. about crayon sketches

  432. in the presence

  433. of Picasso.

  434. You don't claim

  435. equality with Einstein

  436. because you can write

  437. H2O.

  438. And you don't boast

  439. about your goodness

  440. in the presence

  441. of the perfect.

  442. Mark it down,

  443. God does not save us

  444. because of what we've done.

  445. The first step to joy

  446. is a plea for help,

  447. an acknowledgement

  448. of moral destitution,

  449. an admission

  450. of inward poverty.

  451. Those who taste

  452. God's presence

  453. have declared

  454. spiritual bankruptcy

  455. and are aware

  456. of their spiritual crisis.

  457. Their cupboards are bare,

  458. their pockets are empty,

  459. their options are gone.

  460. They have long since

  461. stopped demanding justice.

  462. They are pleading

  463. for mercy.

  464. They don't brag,

  465. they beg.

  466. And they ask God

  467. to do for them

  468. what they can't do

  469. without Him.

  470. You see,

  471. our problem in this world

  472. is not with a backward sermon.

  473. It's with a backward gospel.

  474. Believing somehow

  475. that heaven is awarded to us

  476. on the basis of our success

  477. rather than given to us

  478. despite our failures.

  479. If you study more closely

  480. chapter 5,

  481. Jesus is going to say

  482. that He came

  483. not to abolish the law

  484. but to fulfill it.

  485. What we cannot do,

  486. He has done.

  487. And He offers to us

  488. a perfect righteousness.

  489. In chapter 6,

  490. He's going to invite us

  491. to pray,

  492. forgive us our debts.

  493. because He knows

  494. that He's headed

  495. to a cross

  496. where He is going

  497. to shed His blood

  498. for the forgiveness

  499. of sin.

  500. In chapter 7,

  501. when He speaks

  502. of a narrow gate,

  503. perhaps He's thinking

  504. to a later date

  505. in John chapter 10

    John 10 chapter mention

  506. when He says,

  507. I am the gate

  508. of the sheep.

  509. The gospel requires

  510. that we admit

  511. there is sand

  512. between our toes

  513. and we ask

  514. to be cleansed.

  515. And when we do,

  516. the blood of Jesus

  517. washes away our guilt

  518. and God places

  519. our feet upon a rock.

  520. The psalmist

  521. in Psalm 40

  522. put it this way,

  523. I waited patiently

  524. for the Lord.

  525. He inclined to me

  526. and heard my cry.

  527. He drew me up

  528. from the pit of destruction

  529. out of the miry bog

  530. and He set my feet

  531. upon a rock

  532. making my steps secure.

  533. What makes the gospel

  534. so beautiful

  535. is the depth

  536. of our problem

  537. and the height

  538. of God's solution.

  539. That rock

  540. is not a place.

  541. It's a person.

  542. It's not a new set

  543. of rules.

  544. It's Jesus' blood

  545. and righteousness.

  546. That rock

  547. is not trying harder.

  548. It's resting

  549. in His sufficiency.

  550. It doesn't just point me

  551. in a new direction.

  552. It establishes

  553. in my heart

  554. a new affection.

  555. I'm loved

  556. and I love in return.

  557. I rest

  558. and I'm energized

  559. to obey.

  560. It all sounds

  561. so backwards.

  562. That's why

  563. it's amazing

  564. grace.

  565. When this sermon

  566. begins

  567. in chapter 5

  568. seeing the crowds

  569. He went up

  570. on the mountain

  571. and when He sat down

  572. His disciples

  573. came

  574. to Him.

  575. That's what we must do

  576. come to Him.

  577. And when they left

  578. in chapter 7

  579. it says in verse 28

  580. when Jesus finished

  581. these sayings

  582. the crowds

  583. were astonished

  584. at His teaching

  585. for He was teaching

  586. them as one

  587. who had authority

  588. and not as the scribes

  589. and when He came

  590. down from the mountain

  591. great crowds

  592. followed Him.

  593. We must come

  594. to Him.

  595. Hear His voice

  596. and follow

  597. Him.

  598. in the past

  599. several years

  600. I've had the privilege

  601. of serving

  602. in a retirement

  603. community

  604. immediately across

  605. the street

  606. from my church.

  607. Imagine

  608. if across

  609. Jones Valley

  610. there was a

  611. retirement community

  612. of 400 to 500

  613. people right there

  614. right in your face

  615. well that's what

  616. we've got.

  617. And I started

  618. offering myself

  619. as a chaplain

  620. and doing Bible

  621. studies and meeting

  622. people and ministering

  623. to people

  624. and now I'm

  625. the hired

  626. part-time chaplain.

  627. It's an upscale

  628. retirement community.

  629. It's a place

  630. where the successful

  631. have come

  632. at the end

  633. of their life

  634. to be pampered

  635. and to enjoy

  636. community

  637. and fellowship.

  638. And my message

  639. to these people

  640. has boiled down

  641. to one primary

  642. thought.

  643. Being good

  644. is not

  645. good enough.

  646. They've served

  647. our country.

  648. They've built

  649. hospitals

  650. and churches

  651. and schools.

  652. They've loved

  653. the flag

  654. and paid

  655. their taxes.

  656. They've raised

  657. their families

  658. and now in their

  659. waning years

  660. there are many

  661. of them resting

  662. on all that

  663. they have done

  664. and they want

  665. somebody to come

  666. along and say

  667. to them

  668. well done

  669. you've done

  670. such a good job

  671. and I go

  672. and tell them

  673. your goodness

  674. is not

  675. good enough.

  676. And I try

  677. to point them

  678. to the sufficiency

  679. of Jesus Christ

  680. and the completion

  681. of his work

  682. and say to them

  683. empty hands

  684. clinging to the cross

  685. that's what God

  686. desires.

  687. The gospel of grace

  688. we set the gospel

  689. of grace

  690. backward

  691. when we act

  692. as if

  693. it's a reward

  694. for our performance.

  695. We hear it

  696. accurately

  697. when we come

  698. to a table

  699. like this

  700. and believe

  701. that Jesus

  702. paid

  703. it all

  704. and all

  705. to him

  706. I owe.

  707. The sermon

  708. on the mount

  709. is a hard

  710. hitting

  711. rebuke

  712. to our hearts

  713. it's not a

  714. collection

  715. of wise

  716. and sweet

  717. principles

  718. but a reminder

  719. to us

  720. that the true

  721. gospel of Jesus

  722. Christ

  723. meets us

  724. at the point

  725. of our emptiness

  726. and fills us

  727. with the fullness

  728. of God's

  729. love

  730. and grace

  731. and hope.

  732. And it points

  733. us to this table

  734. because that's

  735. where Jesus

  736. is headed.

  737. He knows it

  738. and he loves it

  739. because he loves you

  740. and because he loves me.

  741. Let's pray.

  742. Father we ask

  743. this morning

  744. that as we come

  745. to this table

  746. we would be convinced

  747. that we are

  748. desperately in need

  749. of a deliverance

  750. that only you

  751. can provide

  752. and in fact

  753. only you have

  754. provided

  755. in sending

  756. your son

  757. to this earth

  758. to give his life

  759. a ransom

  760. for sinners

  761. that we might

  762. turn from ourselves

  763. and receive

  764. and rest

  765. upon him alone

  766. and know

  767. the joy

  768. and the peace

  769. of standing

  770. upon the rock.

  771. And we pray

  772. this in his name.

  773. Amen.
