  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. We're going to be back in Ephesians chapter 4 this morning.

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  4. As Paul applies the truths of the gospel to the lives of the Ephesians,

  5. we come to what can be a fairly complex passage this morning.

  6. So listen closely as I read beginning at verse 17 and then we'll talk about it together.

  7. Ephesians 4 starting at verse 17.

  8. Now this I say and testify in the Lord that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do in the futility of their minds.

  9. They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardness of heart.

  10. They've become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity.

  11. But that is not the way you learned Christ.

  12. Assuming that you have heard about Him and were taught in Him as the truth is in Jesus,

  13. to put off your old self which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires,

  14. and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds,

  15. and to put on the new self created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.

  16. Thus far God's holy, inerrant, and infallible Word.

  17. Let's pray.

  18. Let's pray.

  19. Father, we come to your Word and ask that as we look to it,

  20. the words of my mouth and the meditations of all of our hearts would be acceptable in your sight.

  21. Oh God, our Rock and our Redeemer.

  22. Our trust is in you.

  23. Our hope is in you.

  24. Help us now by your Spirit.

  25. Amen.

  26. Amen.

  27. We've talked already a little bit this morning about the reality of sin in the life of a follower of Christ.

  28. It's a perplexing issue, isn't it?

  29. And one that's raised again in these verses when we see things like the old man and the new man,

  30. and the putting off and the putting on, and what is it that's going on?

  31. When does that happen?

  32. How does that happen?

  33. What are the results in my life?

  34. How does it actually play out?

  35. Why is it, in other words, that I can have a new heart given me by God,

  36. my heart of stone replaced with a heart of flesh,

  37. so that I actually desire to, for instance, love people sacrificially?

  38. And of all the people in the world actually would want to love my wife, right?

  39. Why is it that that can be true and then that just this week I sin against her?

  40. I love myself instead of her.

  41. I was insensitive, unthoughtful.

  42. Instead of listening to her, I wanted to propose my own solutions

  43. and have her understand my wonderful plans and great ideas.

  44. And in my own desire to have things my way,

  45. I sinned against someone I really wanted to love sacrificially.

  46. Why?

  47. Why haven't I quit doing that?

  48. Why haven't you quit doing that?

  49. Hang with me for just a minute.

  50. We're going to dive into a little bit of theological investigation.

  51. We're doing this at the beginning while you're still awake.

  52. So I intended to be helpful.

  53. Look a little bit at what the Bible says about ongoing sin

  54. in the life of a follower of Jesus.

  55. Because this can be difficult to wade through.

  56. It says first that victory has been secured and a new life begun.

  57. This is the clear teaching of Scripture.

  58. 2 Corinthians 5.17, you probably have heard this one.

  59. If anyone's in Christ, he's what?

  60. A new creation.

  61. Old gone, new has come.

  62. Galatians tells us, or Romans,

  63. we know our old self was crucified with him.

  64. It's been killed, that old self,

  65. so that we're not slaves to sin.

  66. We've been set free from sin, right?

  67. Keep going.

  68. Galatians 5.

  69. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh.

  70. It's dead.

  71. And then Colossians 3,

  72. which is a parallel to the passage we're looking at this morning,

  73. says,

  74. you have already,

  75. it's saying,

  76. put off the old self

  77. and put on the new self.

  78. That's already happened.

  79. There's been victory won for you by whom?

  80. By Jesus.

  81. He has crucified

  82. the old self

  83. and brought to life

  84. something where in the past there was death.

  85. The song we sang a minute ago,

  86. my sin,

  87. oh the bliss of this glorious thought,

  88. my sin,

  89. not in part,

  90. but the whole,

  91. all of it was what?

  92. Nailed to the cross.

  93. And I bear it no more.

  94. I don't carry that burden.

  95. Jesus has nailed it to the cross.

  96. And so we might say,

  97. perhaps the Bible's teaching Christians won't sin anymore.

  98. Is that what that means?

  99. Well, no.

  100. The Bible also says,

  101. the same human author Paul, by the way,

  102. all the verses we'll look at this morning,

  103. the Bible also says

  104. that there's an ongoing war

  105. against that new life.

  106. Romans chapter 7,

    Romans 7 chapter mention

  107. I do what I don't want to do.

  108. I keep doing the evil that I don't want

  109. and there's a law of sin

  110. that's waging war against the law of God in me.

  111. There's a war going on within me.

  112. Look at the next one.

  113. Next chapter of Romans

  114. says there's maybe an old self

  115. that's been put to death,

  116. but by the Spirit,

  117. you still need to put to death

  118. the deeds of the body.

  119. There's something that still needs

  120. to be put to death,

  121. a battle that still needs to take place.

  122. Galatians 5,

  123. desires of the flesh against the Spirit,

  124. they're opposed to each other,

  125. fighting with each other,

  126. warring inside you.

  127. Colossians 3,

  128. even though your old self is gone

  129. and your new self has come,

  130. there's a putting to death

  131. that still needs to happen.

  132. Always, always a war ongoing.

  133. Even though victory's been secured,

  134. the Bible says,

  135. there's also still a war.

  136. It's what we talked about

  137. with that catechism question earlier.

  138. That even though sin is defeated,

  139. that it's been nailed to the cross

  140. and we bear it no more,

  141. there are remnants of sin

  142. in every part of us, right?

  143. That's what's going on.

  144. That's at least part of what's happening

  145. and why I would not love my wife

  146. as I should.

  147. Why we don't love God

  148. as we ought to.

  149. See, Jesus delivered us once for all

  150. from the penalty of sin

  151. on the cross.

  152. One day He will deliver us forever

  153. from the presence of sin

  154. at all in our lives.

  155. Amen?

  156. But now,

  157. sin still plagues us

  158. even though it doesn't have

  159. authority over us.

  160. We're not slaves to it anymore.

  161. We have new hearts,

  162. new lives.

  163. G.K. Chesterton says,

  164. sin in the life of the believer

  165. is like a rhinoceros in a restaurant.

  166. It's a vivid image, isn't it?

  167. He says,

  168. if there's a rhinoceros in a restaurant,

  169. Chesterton says,

  170. I'd be the first one to rise up

  171. and assure him

  172. he had no authority whatsoever

  173. in the restaurant.

  174. But he would exert a lot of power.

  175. He would make a big difference.

  176. It would certainly disrupt,

  177. wouldn't it?

  178. That's what sin is like.

  179. Even though it has no authority

  180. in the life of a believer,

  181. it still exerts a lot of power.

  182. Isn't that more than just

  183. theological speculation?

  184. Isn't that your personal,

  185. practical experience?

  186. Haven't you lived that?

  187. Can't you relate to what I shared about

  188. with wanting to love my wife

  189. and then this ongoing battle

  190. and disappointment of,

  191. I've failed again?

  192. Where in this battle,

  193. it does feel like I keep doing things

  194. I don't want to do.

  195. Where I think I've got this sin under control

  196. and I've declared victory over it

  197. and then it comes back

  198. or I've got this area of weakness

  199. under control

  200. and two more pop up over here

  201. and I've got to fight against them.

  202. Can't you relate to that?

  203. Haven't you felt that in your own life?

  204. Has it ever made you ask why?

  205. Why, God, didn't you just get rid of sin

  206. once and for all on the cross

  207. and make us perfect immediately?

  208. Have you ever asked that question?

  209. I've asked that question.

  210. Man, that would have been

  211. such a good idea, it feels like.

  212. Just be done with it.

  213. Why do I have to struggle with this

  214. if Jesus came to defeat sin?

  215. Why am I still battling against it?

  216. We won't take that theological rabbit trail.

  217. We've taken enough this morning.

  218. The Bible doesn't always thoroughly explain why

  219. and answer every question we might have,

  220. but at least part of the answer

  221. is that our ongoing struggle with sin

  222. is a constant reminder of our need for Jesus.

  223. that He wants to be in relationship with us,

  224. not just give us a gift.

  225. More on that later.

  226. We turn to our passage in Ephesians 4.

  227. Finally, I know you're glad to get to Ephesians.

  228. We're back.

  229. And look at it and see how it says at the beginning,

  230. you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do.

  231. Verse 17.

  232. You must no longer walk that way.

  233. Don't live like the old man

  234. because that's not who you are anymore.

  235. You learned, Paul says,

  236. when I came to you and told you about Jesus,

  237. you learned that the new life,

  238. that following Jesus was not just a mere tweak,

  239. that it was life-altering.

  240. That old man was gone

  241. and new man was coming to life.

  242. That happens when you first trust Jesus, he says.

  243. That's what it meant to be baptized into Jesus.

  244. That it wasn't just buying eternal life insurance.

  245. Jesus was a wholesale change of identity and life.

  246. So our passage this week

  247. talks about that reality theologically and generally.

  248. While the next several verses,

  249. the rest of the chapter,

  250. we're going to look at next week

  251. and they talk about this specifically and practically.

  252. Don't live like the old man

  253. because that's not who you are anymore.

  254. That's what it's saying.

  255. I want to give us an imperfect,

  256. but I think helpful analogy

  257. for the next couple of weeks.

  258. We'll use this for both of these conversations.

  259. And it's about witness protection.

  260. Imagine, if you will,

  261. that you are Philip Ptolemeo.

  262. Philip Ptolemeo was involved with the mob,

  263. a very sinister group known as the Calabresi Crew

  264. in Chicago in the 1980s.

  265. But Philip had a falling out with the boss.

  266. And so Philip ran off from the mob

  267. and took a lot of money.

  268. And he also took tons of evidence.

  269. All of the illegal stuff that they were up to,

  270. Ptolemeo walked away with enough stuff

  271. to put them all behind bars.

  272. Well, they didn't, as you might imagine,

  273. take real kindly to him going to the FBI.

  274. And so he would have been in grave danger,

  275. facing almost certain death

  276. at the hands of the violent mob

  277. if they found him.

  278. And so what happened?

  279. He became a part of the witness protection program.

  280. His former identity was erased.

  281. An entirely new identity created for him

  282. in a different city with a different occupation

  283. so he could live life free from harm.

  284. The most important part of the program,

  285. they say,

  286. is that you must embrace your new identity,

  287. not reach back into the old life that you had.

  288. And according to the U.S. Marshals Service,

  289. no witness who has embraced his new identity

  290. has ever been killed.

  291. That's what they say.

  292. They do a good job protecting witnesses.

  293. It wouldn't be safe, would it,

  294. to go back to the old life?

  295. Imagine you're Ptolemeo.

  296. It would be absolutely essential, wouldn't it,

  297. to embrace the new life that you've been given,

  298. to say,

  299. this is who I am now.

  300. I'm somebody different.

  301. It wouldn't be safe any longer

  302. to go to dinner with friends

  303. and decide to tell a few interesting stories

  304. from your mob days, you know.

  305. My new friends will like what I used to be.

  306. That wouldn't be safe.

  307. It wouldn't be a good move

  308. to go back to Chicago

  309. just because you're a big Cubs fan

  310. and wanted to catch a game.

  311. It wouldn't be wise

  312. to throw around your old name anymore.

  313. You have to be completely your new identity,

  314. not living like the old Ptolemeo any longer.

  315. That's what Paul's saying here in Ephesians 4.

  316. Walk in a way that is consistent

  317. with your new identity.

  318. Live in a way that's fitting

  319. with your new life in Christ.

  320. Because there's been a drastic change, right?

  321. We've been talking about this

  322. for weeks and weeks now.

  323. What God has done for us in Christ

  324. is that He's taken us

  325. from being enemies to Him

  326. and made us sons.

  327. In the very first chapter of Ephesians,

  328. it's our union with Christ,

  329. our being connected to Him

  330. that's made that change in us.

  331. We're no longer dead,

  332. no longer far off,

  333. no longer by nature objects of wrath,

  334. facing certain judgment and death.

  335. No, rather we've been made alive.

  336. We've become objects not of God's wrath,

  337. but His mercy,

  338. been drawn near to Him

  339. and made into a temple

  340. where God would desire to dwell in us.

  341. An amazing identity change, right?

  342. Incredible what God has done for us

  343. all because we were wonderful.

  344. No.

  345. All because of being in Christ.

  346. There's the Cliffs notes

  347. on the first three chapters of Ephesians

  348. in case you missed it.

  349. You've entered witness protection.

  350. You've been given an entirely new life to live.

  351. And now Paul says embrace that.

  352. Live consistently with this new identity.

  353. That's what He's telling us today.

  354. And He warns us of some things

  355. we have to remember

  356. if we're going to live this new life.

  357. Two things in this particular passage.

  358. The first is that He warns us

  359. not to underestimate

  360. the danger of sin.

  361. He's going to be pretty direct

  362. in His words about sin.

  363. But be assured,

  364. this is not Paul

  365. forgetting what he's taught us about grace

  366. and all of a sudden lapsing back

  367. into something else

  368. and legalism.

  369. No.

  370. This is Paul preaching grace strongly.

  371. Grace allows us to be.

  372. In fact, it demands

  373. that we be serious about sin

  374. and honest about its destructive nature.

  375. That's why we need grace, right?

  376. Grace should never lead us

  377. to treat sin lightly

  378. but rather seriously.

  379. Paul's telling us here

  380. we must not walk in the ways of sin

  381. that characterized our old man.

  382. He's saying don't declare a truce

  383. with an enemy Jesus died to defeat.

  384. Don't make friends.

  385. Don't declare a truce

  386. with an enemy Jesus died to defeat.

  387. We saw a few weeks ago

  388. God's 4D love for us.

  389. It's width and breadth

  390. and height and depth.

  391. Today Paul gives us

  392. a 3D look at sin.

  393. It's dangerous

  394. and destructive nature.

  395. The first D of how sin works

  396. is that sin is deceitful.

  397. That word itself is used

  398. in verse 22

  399. to describe our desires.

  400. The sinful desires

  401. of the old man are deceitful.

  402. And in fact,

  403. this whole section begins

  404. with talking about

  405. our faulty thinking

  406. and our old way of life.

  407. Notice how he starts

  408. in verses 17 and 18.

  409. He talks here

  410. about the futility

  411. of their minds.

  412. Darkened in their understanding.

  413. Ignorance.

  414. He's talking about

  415. the brokenness

  416. in our thinking.

  417. The ways that

  418. we've been deceived.

  419. Sin by its very nature

  420. has always been full

  421. of falsehood

  422. and deception,

  423. hasn't it?

  424. We're led away

  425. by believing the lies

  426. of Satan and sin.

  427. What are some of the ways

  428. that sin deceives believers?

  429. What are some of the lies

  430. that we believe

  431. where we think,

  432. oh yes,

  433. that's true.

  434. How does sin

  435. take us in

  436. and drag us away?

  437. It tells us

  438. to go ahead

  439. and indulge in sin

  440. because what?

  441. Maybe you've

  442. thought this.

  443. Indulge in sin.

  444. No one will get hurt.

  445. It's just harmless.

  446. No one will get hurt.

  447. You can do that.

  448. Maybe sin has told you,

  449. you know,

  450. you can stop

  451. when you want.

  452. It won't really be

  453. something that lasts

  454. very long.

  455. It'll just be a little sin.

  456. You know,

  457. do it and then stop

  458. whenever you feel like it.

  459. A lot of us

  460. have believed

  461. this next one.

  462. You deserve better.

  463. Sin tells you that.

  464. whispers it in your ear.

  465. You deserve better

  466. than that spouse.

  467. Than that kind of salary.

  468. Than that kind of life.

  469. You deserve better

  470. than that.

  471. Then there's the

  472. twisted truth

  473. into a lie

  474. that we hear a lot.

  475. God will forgive you.

  476. Grace is there

  477. for all your sins

  478. so it's okay.

  479. Sin will even make

  480. grace seem bigger

  481. to you

  482. if you just indulge

  483. a little bit.

  484. Right?

  485. And that's true.

  486. Grace is there.

  487. God does forgive.

  488. But the lie

  489. we're buying into

  490. is that

  491. we're seeing

  492. grace is more beautiful.

  493. What's going on

  494. in my heart

  495. is that

  496. it's actually

  497. losing sight

  498. of the beauty

  499. and the wonder

  500. of the grace

  501. of Jesus

  502. even as I allow

  503. sin to become

  504. more attractive

  505. to me.

  506. So we believe

  507. one of these lies

  508. or one of many others.

  509. We're deceived.

  510. We indulge

  511. in just a few clicks

  512. on the computer.

  513. You know

  514. just a few minutes

  515. lingering there.

  516. We allow our lips

  517. to gossip

  518. and it feels good

  519. in the moment

  520. because I just needed

  521. to get that off my chest.

  522. I just needed to say that

  523. about him or her

  524. and it just felt so good

  525. just to say it.

  526. We indulge

  527. in a few minutes

  528. of daydreams

  529. about what life

  530. could be like

  531. or would be like

  532. or yes

  533. if only I had

  534. yes

  535. that would really

  536. fulfill me

  537. then yes

  538. that would be

  539. so wonderful

  540. then I'd be happy.

  541. And we indulge

  542. in sin

  543. except we

  544. we often don't

  545. take into account

  546. verse 19

  547. the second D

  548. about sin

  549. is that it is

  550. deadening.

  551. Here's what happens

  552. when we

  553. believe the lies

  554. of sin

  555. they become

  556. callous

  557. and given

  558. themselves up.

  559. That word

  560. callous

  561. a deadening

  562. of the senses

  563. right?

  564. Sin makes us

  565. calloused.

  566. It deadens

  567. or desensitizes

  568. us to the damage

  569. we're causing

  570. ourselves.

  571. And so what do we do

  572. when our senses

  573. are deadened?

  574. We indulge

  575. more and more.

  576. You know

  577. that wasn't so bad

  578. was it?

  579. No one really

  580. found out it was

  581. true there weren't

  582. any negative

  583. consequences.

  584. That felt good.

  585. And so our senses

  586. get deadened.

  587. Calloused.

  588. And looking for

  589. pleasure and

  590. fulfillment which

  591. we're longing for

  592. we begin to

  593. want more.

  594. It says we're

  595. greedy.

  596. The word there

  597. is covetous.

  598. We're greedy

  599. to indulge

  600. and practice

  601. every kind

  602. of impurity.

  603. Why?

  604. Because our senses

  605. are deadened

  606. and it takes

  607. more to get

  608. the same feeling

  609. and I don't

  610. feel fulfilled

  611. and all of a sudden

  612. this doesn't feel

  613. as wonderful

  614. as I was hoping

  615. I need more

  616. and more.

  617. And we covet

  618. what we think

  619. will satisfy

  620. our longings.

  621. The Bible tells us

  622. we covet our

  623. neighbor's wife,

  624. his house,

  625. his life,

  626. his assets,

  627. his status

  628. and we want

  629. more of it.

  630. Just a little sin

  631. doesn't satisfy

  632. does it?

  633. We become deadened

  634. and we long

  635. greedy, greedy

  636. to indulge

  637. every kind

  638. of impurity.

  639. One of the

  640. respectable

  641. acceptable sins

  642. of the American

  643. middle class

  644. is gluttony.

  645. I struggle

  646. with this.

  647. And when we

  648. describe it

  649. it's so acceptable

  650. to us that we

  651. can actually think

  652. it's light-hearted

  653. or funny

  654. sometimes

  655. but it can

  656. really be serious.

  657. It's a serious

  658. heart issue.

  659. On Wednesday

  660. mornings here

  661. at the church

  662. a group of men

  663. have Bible study.

  664. They come early

  665. and they very

  666. kindly leave

  667. almost every week

  668. a dozen or so

  669. Krispy Kreme

  670. donuts behind.

  671. And so I get

  672. to the office

  673. on Wednesday

  674. mornings

  675. and typically

  676. one of the first

  677. things I do

  678. is locate that

  679. box

  680. and have one

  681. when I get it.

  682. It's so good.

  683. I love Krispy Kreme

  684. and then James

  685. Parker walks up

  686. and says something

  687. like a moment

  688. on the lips

  689. forever on the hips

  690. and so I

  691. slink back

  692. into my office

  693. and wish I

  694. hadn't even

  695. had the one

  696. but they're

  697. really good

  698. and then I get

  699. to working

  700. on my sermon

  701. or something

  702. like that

  703. and things

  704. are coming

  705. slowly.

  706. It's just

  707. really struggling

  708. and really

  709. frustrated with

  710. myself

  711. and so I'll

  712. wander back

  713. out for

  714. another donut

  715. and through

  716. the day

  717. each subsequent

  718. donut

  719. is actually

  720. what we call

  721. in order

  722. again mostly

  723. to make

  724. ourselves feel

  725. okay about it

  726. we call it

  727. what?

  728. Eating my

  729. feelings.

  730. Am I the only

  731. one in here

  732. who eats my

  733. feelings?

  734. I eat my

  735. feelings

  736. and so that's

  737. actually usually

  738. what's going on

  739. and that's funny

  740. and when we say

  741. it that way

  742. we laugh

  743. but what's

  744. actually happening?

  745. In my need

  746. I'm turning

  747. to a donut

  748. instead of

  749. allowing my

  750. need to drive

  751. me to God

  752. and I should

  753. be seeing

  754. danger

  755. danger

  756. this is

  757. spiritually

  758. treacherous

  759. I'm finding

  760. my need

  761. the longing

  762. that I feel

  763. fulfilled

  764. somewhere that's

  765. not God

  766. doesn't seem

  767. so bad

  768. it feels

  769. good

  770. to turn

  771. back to

  772. that box

  773. one more

  774. time

  775. feels especially

  776. good if you

  777. cut it in half

  778. first and come

  779. back and eat

  780. the other half

  781. later because

  782. you save

  783. calories

  784. that's an

  785. extra tip

  786. for free

  787. but as you

  788. go back

  789. it leaves you

  790. wanting more

  791. doesn't it?

  792. You begin to

  793. realize I'm not

  794. fulfilled by

  795. just having a

  796. donut in the

  797. morning

  798. there's something

  799. else I'm not

  800. quite satisfied

  801. now you fill in

  802. the blanks

  803. maybe it is

  804. gluttony

  805. food

  806. for you

  807. maybe it's

  808. drink

  809. maybe it's

  810. body image

  811. maybe it's

  812. bank account

  813. and we

  814. just need a

  815. little more

  816. than we

  817. used to

  818. in order to

  819. feel good

  820. because sin

  821. having deceived

  822. us has

  823. deadened our

  824. senses

  825. and it's like

  826. the proverbial

  827. frog in

  828. boiling water

  829. where eventually

  830. you will realize

  831. the third

  832. D of sin

  833. that it's not

  834. just deceitful

  835. and deadening

  836. but it's actually

  837. deadly

  838. enough donuts

  839. would do that

  840. that's not

  841. usually the way

  842. we experience it

  843. verse 19

  844. they've given

  845. themselves up

  846. like in Romans

  847. 1 God

  848. giving us over

  849. the same concept

  850. to our sinful

  851. desires

  852. in other words

  853. taking it to

  854. its fullest

  855. extent

  856. it's the nature

  857. of sin

  858. it brings

  859. death

  860. James chapter

    James 1 chapter mention

  861. 1

  862. desire when it

  863. is conceived

  864. gives birth to

  865. sin and sin

  866. when it's fully

  867. grown brings

  868. forth death

  869. by its very

  870. nature

  871. Proverbs 14

  872. 12

  873. there's a way

  874. that seems

  875. right to a

  876. man

  877. it makes

  878. sense

  879. it feels

  880. good

  881. and in the

  882. end

  883. it's the way

  884. to death

  885. it seemed

  886. so good

  887. but it began

  888. to choke

  889. the life

  890. out of me

  891. that's why

  892. Paul warns

  893. us against

  894. underestimating

  895. the destructive

  896. nature of sin

  897. of the old

  898. life

  899. he doesn't

  900. want us

  901. dragged away

  902. to death

  903. just like

  904. Philip

  905. Tolomeo

  906. Brenda

  907. Potts

  908. entered witness

  909. protection

  910. with the

  911. U.S.

  912. Marshals

  913. she was

  914. 17

  915. in 2002

  916. when she

  917. began to

  918. turn in

  919. members of

  920. the violent

  921. street gang

  922. she'd been

  923. a part of

  924. she was

  925. relocated

  926. with a new

  927. name

  928. and a new

  929. social security

  930. number

  931. from Virginia

  932. to Kansas

  933. City

  934. Missouri

  935. right where

  936. she'd be

  937. safe

  938. but Brenda

  939. never embraced

  940. her new

  941. life

  942. she repeatedly

  943. called old

  944. friends and

  945. even invited

  946. them out

  947. to visit

  948. her

  949. she was

  950. relocated

  951. time and

  952. again to

  953. try to

  954. keep her

  955. safe

  956. but only

  957. one year

  958. after entering

  959. witness protection

  960. she returned

  961. to Virginia

  962. and was

  963. found dead

  964. within a few

  965. days

  966. there's death

  967. at the end

  968. of your

  969. old way of

  970. life

  971. Paul says

  972. sin is not

  973. as pleasant

  974. as it promises

  975. to be

  976. don't make

  977. friends or

  978. declare a

  979. truce on

  980. an enemy

  981. that Christ

  982. had to die

  983. in order to

  984. defeat

  985. sin is

  986. treacherous

  987. it deceives you

  988. it deadens

  989. your senses

  990. and it's

  991. deadly

  992. and Christ

  993. had to die

  994. to defeat

  995. it

  996. his death

  997. shows you

  998. the seriousness

  999. of sin

  1000. you've been

  1001. rescued from

  1002. sin by his

  1003. grace

  1004. not rescued

  1005. to indulge

  1006. in sin

  1007. in self

  1008. destroying

  1009. lusts

  1010. he's rescued

  1011. you for

  1012. something

  1013. quite different

  1014. so finally

  1015. and much

  1016. more briefly

  1017. there's something

  1018. else we

  1019. shouldn't

  1020. underestimate

  1021. besides

  1022. the danger

  1023. of sin

  1024. if we're

  1025. going to

  1026. live our

  1027. new life

  1028. this passage

  1029. warns us

  1030. not to

  1031. underestimate

  1032. the scope

  1033. of God's

  1034. work

  1035. let me show

  1036. you what

  1037. Paul says

  1038. verse 20

  1039. this running

  1040. headlong

  1041. after sin

  1042. that he's

  1043. talked about

  1044. in these

  1045. first few

  1046. verses

  1047. he says

  1048. that's not

  1049. the way

  1050. you learned

  1051. Christ

  1052. that's not

  1053. what you

  1054. were told

  1055. when you

  1056. met Jesus

  1057. rather

  1058. as we've

  1059. seen

  1060. you were

  1061. taught

  1062. that following

  1063. Jesus

  1064. was life

  1065. altering

  1066. trading

  1067. old

  1068. desires

  1069. for

  1070. new

  1071. old

  1072. thinking

  1073. for

  1074. new

  1075. old

  1076. living

  1077. for

  1078. new

  1079. Jesus

  1080. changes

  1081. everything

  1082. right

  1083. and remember

  1084. that old

  1085. self put

  1086. off

  1087. and the

  1088. new

  1089. self put

  1090. on

  1091. is what

  1092. happened

  1093. when the

  1094. Ephesians

  1095. first met

  1096. Jesus

  1097. that's what

  1098. they're new

  1099. but there's

  1100. even more

  1101. God's up to

  1102. in our

  1103. lives

  1104. and it's

  1105. good news

  1106. because

  1107. the danger

  1108. of what

  1109. happens

  1110. if we

  1111. underestimate

  1112. the scope

  1113. of God's

  1114. work

  1115. there's a

  1116. danger

  1117. when we

  1118. hear a

  1119. sermon

  1120. like this

  1121. or read

  1122. a passage

  1123. like this

  1124. that talks

  1125. about the

  1126. dangers

  1127. of sin

  1128. and the

  1129. importance

  1130. of a

  1131. new life

  1132. you know

  1133. what the

  1134. danger

  1135. is

  1136. what do

  1137. you begin

  1138. to feel

  1139. it's all

  1140. up to me

  1141. it's all

  1142. on me

  1143. now

  1144. I gotta

  1145. get it

  1146. together

  1147. sin is

  1148. dangerous

  1149. I've got

  1150. to live

  1151. differently

  1152. then at the

  1153. end of the

  1154. day it's

  1155. all up

  1156. to us

  1157. now

  1158. yes

  1159. Jesus

  1160. thank you

  1161. for forgiving

  1162. my sins

  1163. that was

  1164. wonderful

  1165. but now

  1166. it's up

  1167. to me

  1168. to try

  1169. harder

  1170. to just

  1171. do it

  1172. be new

  1173. lifey

  1174. enough

  1175. I don't

  1176. even know

  1177. what that

  1178. would look

  1179. like

  1180. but I

  1181. need to

  1182. drum up

  1183. enough

  1184. willpower

  1185. the next

  1186. time

  1187. to close

  1188. my mouth

  1189. or the

  1190. computer screen

  1191. or whatever

  1192. it is

  1193. I'm gonna

  1194. do it

  1195. but you

  1196. know it

  1197. doesn't

  1198. work

  1199. I know

  1200. that doesn't

  1201. work

  1202. and God's

  1203. word tells

  1204. us it's not

  1205. even what he

  1206. designed

  1207. you see

  1208. sometimes we

  1209. underestimate

  1210. the scope

  1211. of God's

  1212. work

  1213. even while

  1214. we think

  1215. we're making

  1216. much of the

  1217. cross of

  1218. Christ

  1219. while we

  1220. think we're

  1221. celebrating it

  1222. and the grace

  1223. and forgiveness

  1224. of Jesus

  1225. there

  1226. we think of

  1227. what God

  1228. did in

  1229. sending Jesus

  1230. for us

  1231. was for the

  1232. goal of

  1233. forgiving our

  1234. sins and

  1235. getting us

  1236. to heaven

  1237. that in

  1238. between he

  1239. was just

  1240. gonna leave

  1241. us on our

  1242. own

  1243. between now

  1244. and heaven

  1245. it's up

  1246. to us

  1247. and we

  1248. think that's

  1249. saying a lot

  1250. about the

  1251. cross

  1252. it's actually

  1253. selling it

  1254. short

  1255. this passage

  1256. paints a

  1257. broader

  1258. and a

  1259. higher

  1260. goal

  1261. not just

  1262. a gift

  1263. of eternal

  1264. life insurance

  1265. but look at

  1266. verse 24

  1267. created

  1268. after the

  1269. likeness

  1270. of God

  1271. in true

  1272. righteousness

  1273. and holiness

  1274. where does that

  1275. take you

  1276. back to

  1277. Genesis 1

  1278. right

  1279. created

  1280. after the

  1281. likeness

  1282. of God

  1283. he designed

  1284. you in

  1285. his image

  1286. to be in

  1287. relationship

  1288. with him

  1289. to be in

  1290. a relationship

  1291. where you

  1292. trusted him

  1293. and followed

  1294. him

  1295. true

  1296. righteousness

  1297. and holiness

  1298. that's what

  1299. God made

  1300. you for

  1301. and it's

  1302. what he's

  1303. remaking

  1304. you

  1305. for

  1306. even though

  1307. that perfect

  1309. and true

  1310. relationship

  1311. has been

  1312. broken

  1313. he hasn't

  1314. given up

  1315. on that

  1316. and he

  1317. hasn't

  1318. decided to

  1319. leave it

  1320. up to

  1321. you

  1322. either

  1323. he who

  1324. began

  1325. a good

  1326. work

  1327. in you

  1328. will carry

  1329. it on

  1330. to completion

  1331. until the

  1332. day of

  1333. Jesus

  1334. Christ

  1335. right

  1336. he will

  1337. he will

  1338. see it

  1339. through

  1340. he is

  1341. recreating

  1342. remaking

  1343. you

  1344. in his

  1345. image

  1346. yes

  1347. he forgives

  1348. your sins

  1349. yes

  1350. he guarantees

  1351. your eternity

  1352. and he's also

  1353. working on us

  1354. today

  1355. and he won't

  1356. stop

  1357. he's not

  1358. going to

  1359. quit

  1360. on us

  1361. he actually

  1362. wants

  1363. not just

  1364. to give

  1365. you the

  1366. gift

  1367. of a

  1368. get out

  1369. of jail

  1370. free

  1371. card

  1372. one day

  1373. someday

  1374. when you

  1375. die

  1376. he wants

  1377. to live

  1378. in relationship

  1379. with you

  1380. now

  1381. that's what

  1382. he wants

  1383. he wants

  1384. you to

  1385. have a

  1386. relationship

  1387. where you

  1388. walk

  1389. with him

  1390. talk

  1391. with him

  1392. where you

  1393. abide

  1394. in him

  1395. depend

  1396. on him

  1397. for everything

  1398. that you

  1399. need

  1400. maybe that's

  1401. part of why

  1402. you sin

  1403. so that you'll

  1404. remember how

  1405. much you

  1406. need him

  1407. that's his

  1408. heart

  1409. that he would

  1410. desire not

  1411. just to save

  1412. you but that

  1413. he would

  1414. desire to

  1415. know you

  1416. now

  1417. can you

  1418. believe

  1419. that

  1420. do you

  1421. really

  1422. really

  1423. think

  1424. that's

  1425. true

  1426. does he

  1427. feel

  1428. that way

  1429. about

  1430. you

  1431. the new

  1432. life

  1433. he's

  1434. designed

  1435. for us

  1436. is not

  1437. one of

  1438. minor

  1439. improvement

  1440. on our

  1441. own

  1442. but of

  1443. true

  1444. righteousness

  1445. and holiness

  1446. in Christ

  1447. his grace

  1448. may be even

  1449. bigger than

  1450. you imagined

  1451. Christian

  1452. God intends

  1453. to give us

  1454. new life

  1455. not just

  1456. one that's

  1457. slightly improved

  1458. but that is

  1459. rich and

  1460. free and

  1461. abundant

  1462. exactly as

  1463. he always

  1464. intended

  1465. it's why

  1466. he made

  1467. you

  1468. it's what

  1469. he longs

  1470. for for

  1471. you

  1472. so be

  1473. clear that

  1474. this passage

  1475. isn't

  1476. hoisting

  1477. the burden

  1478. of true

  1479. righteousness

  1480. and holiness

  1481. on your

  1482. shoulders

  1483. it's

  1484. God's

  1485. desire

  1486. promise

  1487. and

  1488. commitment

  1489. it's why

  1490. when we're

  1491. told to put

  1492. to death

  1493. the misdeeds

  1494. of the

  1495. flesh

  1496. it's only

  1497. by the

  1498. spirit

  1499. that we

  1500. put to

  1501. death

  1502. the misdeeds

  1503. because

  1504. you're not

  1505. on your

  1506. own

  1507. right

  1508. he dwells

  1509. in you

  1510. by the

  1511. spirit

  1512. by the

  1513. one who's

  1514. there

  1515. with you

  1516. who hasn't

  1517. left you

  1518. put them

  1519. to death

  1520. he lives

  1521. in you

  1522. sometimes

  1523. we think

  1524. of avoiding

  1525. sin in

  1526. terms of

  1527. witness

  1528. protection

  1529. and we

  1530. mean

  1531. protecting

  1532. our

  1533. witness

  1534. our

  1535. testimony

  1536. our

  1537. good

  1538. name

  1539. that's

  1540. not what

  1541. I mean

  1542. witness

  1543. protection

  1544. is about

  1545. protecting

  1546. whom

  1547. the

  1548. witness

  1549. himself

  1550. and no

  1551. matter what

  1552. struggles

  1553. a witness

  1554. may have

  1555. embracing

  1556. his new

  1557. identity

  1558. no matter

  1559. how hard

  1560. it is

  1561. for him

  1562. to live

  1563. out the

  1564. way that

  1565. he should

  1566. there's

  1567. always

  1568. in witness

  1569. protection

  1570. a safe

  1571. house

  1572. it's often

  1573. protected by

  1574. U.S.

  1575. marshals

  1576. where the

  1577. witness can

  1578. go

  1579. and be

  1580. safe

  1581. the only

  1582. safe

  1583. house

  1584. for us

  1585. is in

  1586. Christ

  1587. connected

  1588. to him

  1589. he's the

  1590. place of

  1591. refuge

  1592. where

  1593. struggling

  1594. witnesses

  1595. find

  1596. abundant

  1597. life

  1598. by

  1599. pushing

  1600. back

  1601. into

  1602. him

  1603. it's

  1604. why

  1605. the

  1606. Bible

  1607. tells

  1608. us

  1609. to do

  1610. what

  1611. to

  1612. abide

  1613. in

  1614. him

  1615. to

  1616. dwell

  1617. connected

  1618. to

  1619. the

  1620. vine

  1621. close

  1622. to

  1623. Christ

  1624. gazing

  1625. on

  1626. his

  1627. beauty

  1628. because

  1629. in

  1630. Christ

  1631. here's

  1632. why

  1633. you're

  1634. safe

  1635. in

  1636. Christ

  1637. the

  1638. deadly

  1639. effects

  1640. of

  1641. sin

  1642. can

  1643. never

  1644. reach

  1645. you

  1646. why

  1647. why

  1648. can

  1649. in

  1650. Christ

  1651. the deadly

  1652. effects

  1653. of

  1654. sin

  1655. never

  1656. reach

  1657. you

  1658. because

  1659. he

  1660. took

  1661. them

  1662. all

  1663. for

  1664. you

  1665. right

  1666. you're

  1667. in

  1668. a

  1669. safe

  1670. house

  1671. it's

  1672. a

  1673. place

  1674. where

  1675. the

  1676. truth

  1677. about

  1678. sin

  1679. is

  1680. never

  1681. downplayed

  1682. the

  1683. perfect

  1684. son

  1685. of

  1686. God

  1687. died

  1688. because

  1689. of

  1690. the

  1691. danger

  1692. of

  1693. sin

  1694. but

  1695. it's

  1696. a

  1697. place

  1698. where

  1699. the

  1700. truth

  1701. about

  1702. the

  1703. scope

  1704. of

  1705. God's

  1706. work

  1707. is

  1708. never

  1709. downplayed

  1710. he

  1711. died

  1712. for

  1713. you

  1714. to

  1715. reestablish

  1716. relationship

  1717. with

  1718. you

  1719. and

  1720. to

  1721. remake

  1722. you

  1723. after

  1724. his

  1725. image

  1726. so

  1727. that

  1728. when

  1729. you're

  1730. confronted

  1731. by

  1732. the

  1733. seemingly

  1734. attractive

  1735. offer

  1736. of

  1737. sin

  1738. you

  1739. will

  1740. by

  1741. the

  1742. spirit

  1743. who

  1744. lives

  1745. in

  1746. you

  1747. what

  1748. does

  1749. the

  1750. spirit

  1751. love

  1752. to

  1753. do

  1754. the

  1755. spirit

  1756. loves

  1757. to

  1758. point

  1759. you

  1760. to

  1761. Jesus

  1762. but

  1763. that's

  1764. his

  1765. favorite

  1766. thing

  1767. the

  1768. spirit

  1769. that

  1770. lives

  1771. in

  1772. you

  1773. would

  1774. want

  1775. to

  1776. point

  1777. you

  1778. to

  1779. Jesus

  1780. so

  1781. that

  1782. you

  1783. see

  1784. him

  1785. again

  1786. in

  1787. the

  1788. midst

  1789. of

  1790. that

  1791. temptation

  1792. and

  1793. struggle

  1794. with

  1795. sin

  1796. and

  1797. it

  1798. seems

  1799. so

  1800. attractive

  1801. the

  1802. spirit

  1803. says

  1804. what

  1805. about

  1806. Jesus

  1807. look

  1808. at

  1809. him

  1810. again

  1811. see

  1812. the

  1813. beauty

  1814. of

  1815. Christ

  1816. true

  1817. righteousness

  1818. and

  1819. holiness

  1820. not

  1821. the

  1822. counterfeit

  1823. version

  1824. that

  1825. sin

  1826. would

  1827. offer

  1828. abide

  1829. in

  1830. him

  1831. gaze

  1832. on

  1833. his

  1834. cross

  1835. again

  1836. this

  1837. morning

  1838. you

  1839. know

  1840. what

  1841. you'll

  1842. see

  1843. as

  1844. you

  1845. look

  1846. at

  1847. the

  1848. cross

  1849. see

  1850. him

  1851. become

  1852. sin

  1853. for

  1854. you

  1855. so

  1856. that

  1857. in

  1858. him

  1859. you

  1860. would

  1861. become

  1862. the

  1863. righteousness

  1864. of

  1865. God

  1866. then

  1867. in

  1868. the

  1869. shadow

  1870. of

  1871. the

  1872. cross

  1873. seeing

  1874. that

  1875. you'll

  1876. think

  1877. rightly

  1878. and

  1879. see

  1880. clearly

  1881. the

  1882. horror

  1883. of

  1884. sin

  1885. what

  1886. it

  1887. did

  1888. to

  1889. Jesus

  1890. and

  1891. you'll

  1892. see

  1893. the

  1894. beauty

  1895. of

  1896. your

  1897. Savior

  1898. at

  1899. the

  1900. same

  1901. time

  1902. and

  1911. the

  1912. abundant

  1913. new

  1914. life

  1915. that

  1916. he's

  1917. created

  1918. you

  1919. for

  1920. pray

  1921. with

  1922. me

  1923. Holy

  1924. Spirit

  1925. show

  1926. us

  1927. Jesus

  1928. if

  1929. we've

  1930. never

  1931. seen

  1932. him

  1933. as

  1934. more

  1935. beautiful

  1936. than

  1937. our

  1944. let

  1945. us

  1946. see

  1947. him

  1948. beautiful

  1949. if

  1950. we've

  1951. lost

  1952. sight

  1953. of

  1954. the

  1955. glory

  1956. of

  1957. his

  1973. Jesus

  1974. again
