  1. Amen.

  2. Amen.

  3. Amen.

  4. Amen.

  5. Thank you, James.

  6. I hope you all enjoyed that song.

  7. You'll have a chance to sing it yourselves after the sermon.

  8. So, we look forward to that.

  9. I hope you all had a wonderful 4th of July.

  10. Maybe you got as crazy as we did.

  11. The cops ended up at my house at the house at the house at the house at the house at

  12. the house at the house at the house at the house at the house at the house at the house

  13. We did.

  14. The cops ended up at my house last night.

  15. Just kidding, they were next door, actually.

  16. I think our neighbors, they waited until all the rain stopped at about 1230 to shoot off

  17. all their fireworks.

  18. And so, there was a sleeping preacher who was woken up.

  19. So, I hope that your night went better than mine did last night.

  20. I'm excited to open God's Word with you.

  21. If you will look at Ephesians chapter 4, we'll be considering verses 25 through 32 this morning.

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  22. Ephesians 4, 25 through 32.

  23. As you turn there, let me tell you, this is our last week in chapter 4 of Ephesians.

  24. You may recall that Will spent the past two weeks talking about verses 17 through 32,

  25. and the summary was this.

  26. There was the old way, there is the new way, and we have all of these gospel kingdom-minded

  27. motivations.

  28. Paul says, because of how the gospel has changed your life, you now put on the new self, and

  29. you now respond.

  30. You take up the calling in which you have been called.

  31. As we conclude this section, Will and I thought it would be helpful to spend a week talking

  32. particularly about verse 30, as it talks about grieving the Holy Spirit.

  33. I was the one lucky enough to get the verse on grieving the Holy Spirit.

  34. I really am excited, though, and look forward to sharing God's Word with you as we will focus

  35. on verse 30.

  36. The Holy Spirit's not something that we talk about very often.

  37. We don't talk about it very often.

  38. One, because there aren't many verses on the Holy Spirit, and two, the ones that are there

  39. are often difficult passages like this one.

  40. So I want to talk about our passage, but I also want to speak big picture about the Holy

  41. Spirit this morning as well.

  42. So look with me at Ephesians chapter 4.

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  43. We'll go back and start in verse 25 and go through verse 32.

  44. Look at God's Word with me.

  45. Therefore, having put away falsehood, let each of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for

  46. we are members one of another.

  47. Be angry and do not sin.

  48. Do not let the sun go down on your anger and give no opportunity to the devil.

  49. Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own

  50. hands so that he may have something to share with anyone in need.

  51. Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up,

  52. as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.

  53. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

  54. Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along

  55. with all malice.

  56. Will you pray with me?

  57. Father, you tell us that the flowers fade, but your Word stands forever.

  58. And so, Father, we claim that promise this morning, that as we consider your Word this

  59. morning, that it might not fade, that it might carry with great power into our hearts and

  60. our lives.

  61. And Father, as we even consider the Holy Spirit, would you offer us your Holy Spirit this morning?

  62. That your Holy Spirit would be a teacher, that your Holy Spirit would be a guide to us as

  63. we consider this book, the book of Ephesians, the promises of Paul.

  64. So be with us now, Father.

  65. Guide us and keep us during this time.

  66. Pray these things in your heavenly Son's name.

  67. Amen.

  68. Amen.

  69. One of my professors in seminary was memorable for saying lots of things.

  70. There were lots of things that Jack Collins was known for saying.

  71. The class where he was most famous for saying famous things was Covenant Theology.

  72. It was the introductory course that all first-year students at Covenant Seminary take.

  73. And it was the class where the professors, it was four of them, they taught it together.

  74. And they took these entering students who were on top of the spiritual world.

  75. They thought they had it all figured out.

  76. And they put their theological world totally out of balance.

  77. They took everything that you thought you knew, and they pointed out your presuppositions.

  78. They pointed out your weaknesses.

  79. And they ultimately pointed out all the things that you didn't know.

  80. They were there to knock you down a notch.

  81. One of the things that Jack Collins was famous for saying was,

  82. Don't hear what I'm not saying.

  83. Don't hear what I'm not saying.

  84. I think it originated from his impatience.

  85. I think it came out of some of his disgust from students who would take giant leaps from

  86. one thing he said about a particular passage and draw all kinds of other conclusions.

  87. Don't hear what I'm not saying was the warning from Jack Collins all the time.

  88. It was a reminder to us to stay focused, to remember what we knew to be true about the

  89. subject at hand.

  90. Don't start drawing all kinds of crazy conclusions.

  91. Don't hear what I'm not saying.

  92. Dr. Collins knew from working with young seminarians that it was the habit of our eager hearts and

  93. minds to want to believe things that weren't actually in the text, that weren't actually there.

  94. And if I may, I believe that Paul would probably be saying the same thing to us this morning

  95. as we consider verse 32 about the Holy Spirit.

  96. Don't hear what I'm not saying would be the warning of Paul.

  97. He says,

  98. Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption, but

  99. stop.

  100. Do not hear what I'm not saying.

  101. As we consider the passage this morning, we understand that there's a lot that the Bible

  102. teaches about the Holy Spirit, and we must be careful to not hear what the passage isn't

  103. saying.

  104. Sayings like these, that we grieve the Spirit, that we affect the Holy Spirit, can lead us

  105. to hear things that are not in the text.

  106. So I want us just to slow down a little bit, and I want us to start there.

  107. Let's start there by talking about what this passage doesn't say.

  108. So if you want to start taking notes, start there.

  109. Here's what the passage doesn't say.

  110. What this passage doesn't say about the Holy Spirit.

  111. The first is this.

  112. The passage does not say that grieving and blaspheming are the same.

  113. If you're like me, you hear this passage, you read about the grieving of the Holy Spirit,

  114. and your mind immediately goes to Jesus' words about blaspheming the Spirit.

  115. And you start to get confused, and you think, oh no, I don't want to…

  116. Paul's saying don't blaspheme the Spirit.

  117. That's what he's saying.

  118. I don't want to get caught up in this, what did Jesus call it?

  119. Blaspheming was the unforgivable sin, right?

  120. Look with me at Mark chapter 3.

    Mark 3 chapter mention

  121. These are Jesus' words.

  122. He says this,

  123. In Mark chapter 3, Jesus is speaking about a much different act towards the Holy Spirit

    Mark 3 chapter mention

  124. than the grieving that Paul is talking about here.

  125. We're not going to consider Mark chapter 3 entirely this morning.

    Mark 3 chapter mention

  126. I'm not going to do it justice.

  127. But you need to know that what Jesus was referring to here was a flagrant, willful, decisive judgment

  128. that the Spirit's testimony came from Satan.

  129. That the Spirit's testimony was untrue.

  130. Jesus is explaining that all those who have this persistent, unrepentant denial of the Holy Spirit

  131. will not experience forgiveness.

  132. The word that Jesus uses for blaspheming is entirely different.

  133. It has a different context.

  134. It was spoken by a different person.

  135. It comes from a different biblical author,

  136. and therefore it has a much different meaning than what Paul is talking about here in chapter 4.

  137. It's also worth noting that many Christians fear from Mark chapter 3 that they themselves might blaspheme the Spirit.

    Mark 3 chapter mention

  138. This concern, this consideration actually shows a sensitivity to the Spirit,

  139. and it's evidence that you're not blaspheming the Spirit.

  140. So if that's in the back of your mind somewhere, please know that.

  141. Please know that if you're sensitive to blaspheming the Spirit,

  142. you're not actually blaspheming the Spirit.

  143. You have good judgment.

  144. You're considering your own heart.

  145. Paul's word choice, though, his word choice in Ephesians chapter 4 verse 30

    Ephesians 4:30

  146. is one that means to be made sad, to be made sorrowful,

  147. to affect with grief or to make one uneasy.

  148. This definition, along with Paul's whole context, makes these very different ideas.

  149. Grieving is not blaspheming.

  150. Grieving is not blaspheming.

  151. As we grieve the Spirit, which Paul knows that we will,

  152. he anticipates it by talking about it,

  153. we are doing something very different than what Jesus spoke about in Mark chapter 3.

    Mark 3 chapter mention

  154. Paul is not saying that grieving is blaspheming.

  155. The second thing that Paul is not saying is that we can affect our relationship with the Father.

  156. He's not saying that we can affect our relationship with the Father.

  157. We're going to talk a little bit more in a moment about our actions,

  158. both of our head and our hearts that grieve the Spirit,

  159. but we must first remove from our minds any idea that we can change or affect the standing that we have with the Father.

  160. Paul is not saying that we can affect our relationship with the Father.

  161. This is true for a number of reasons.

  162. The first is that the entire book of Ephesians so far doesn't support that idea.

  163. The entire book of Ephesians so far is founded upon, rooted in,

  164. the fact that we have received God's grace through Christ,

  165. and that we are eternally sealed by that.

  166. As Paul talks about us grieving the Spirit,

  167. it's not in contradiction to what he's talked about already about grace.

  168. Paul knows that we are sealed by the Father.

  169. We are forever sons and daughters,

  170. and there's nothing that we can do to change that relationship.

  171. There's also a biblical precedent for grieving the Holy Spirit.

  172. Paul had in mind Isaiah 63.

  173. It was in clear view when he wrote this passage,

  174. and in Isaiah 63, the people of God are described the exact same way,

  175. as grieving the Holy Spirit.

  176. They've grieved the Holy Spirit through their disobedience.

  177. It was this common pattern of God's people to return to their sin again and again, right?

  178. And the Scripture tells us that God was saddened,

  179. that He was sorrowful,

  180. that He grieved when the people of God returned to their sin.

  181. We can't miss the clear indication and the significance of the fact that our sins do affect the Father,

  182. but they do not affect our relationship with the Father.

  183. This description of rebelling against God in Isaiah is couched, however,

  184. you need to understand, between two declarations of God's love.

  185. It's couched by two declarations of God's love.

  186. Look with me at Isaiah 63, beginning in verse 7.

  187. It says this,

  188. I will recount the steadfast love of the Lord,

  189. the praises of the Lord according to all that the Lord has granted us,

  190. and the great goodness to the house of Israel,

  191. according to the abundance of His steadfast love.

  192. For He said,

  193. Surely they are My people,

  194. children who will not deal falsely.

  195. And He became their Savior.

  196. In all their affliction, He was afflicted,

  197. and the angel of His presence saved them in His love,

  198. and in His pity, He redeemed them.

  199. He lifted them up and carried them all the days of old.

  200. God's love is offered again and again and again.

  201. His spirit grieves, but then listen to what comes next.

  202. In verse 11,

  203. Then He remembered the days of old, of Moses and His people.

  204. Where is He who brought them up out of the sea with the shepherds of His flock?

  205. Where is He who put in the midst of them His Holy Spirit,

  206. who caused His glorious arm to go at the right hand of Moses,

  207. who divided the waters before them to make for Himself an everlasting name?

  208. The proclamation is there.

  209. The message is clear.

  210. God's love never stops pursuing you.

  211. Even in His grief,

  212. there's nothing that will change your relationship with the Father.

  213. Just as God does not want us to walk in sin,

  214. He also does not want us to ever forget His love and His redemption.

  215. Many can perceive these accounts from the Old Testament,

  216. even Ephesians chapter 4,

    Ephesians 4 chapter mention

  217. read them on their own,

  218. and consider God as having this overriding sentiment

  219. of looking over your shoulder with shame.

  220. He looks over your shoulder, shaking His head.

  221. He can't believe what you've done.

  222. No.

  223. The Father stands in front of you,

  224. and He smiles,

  225. and He says,

  226. You are my son,

  227. and you are my daughter.

  228. I grieve your sin,

  229. but it does not change your standing with me.

  230. The reality of God's grievance

  231. cannot be separated from the truth of His unconditional love.

  232. The prophet Isaiah did not lose sight of it.

  233. The apostle Paul did not lose sight of it.

  234. We cannot lose sight of the unchanging love that God has for us.

  235. Don't hear Paul saying that we can affect our relationship with the Father.

  236. The third thing that we don't need to hear,

  237. that we can't hear in this passage,

  238. is that human emotion is equivalent to divine emotion.

  239. That human emotion is equivalent to divine emotion.

  240. What I mean when I say that is this.

  241. We must be able to separate our own understanding of an emotion as expressed

  242. between sinful human beings

  243. and how it's expressed from a holy and perfect God.

  244. Something similar to this would be our understanding from the Bible of God's jealousy,

  245. of His wrath,

  246. of His anger.

  247. It's difficult for us to imagine a holy expression of those emotions

  248. when we so often only understand an expression of those emotions

  249. as it's affected by the fall, right?

  250. For many of us,

  251. our experience of our wrongdoing,

  252. when we've sinned,

  253. when we disobeyed,

  254. with our heavenly parents,

  255. it was reflected in a removal of affection.

  256. Maybe there was shame.

  257. Maybe there was abuse when you got out of line.

  258. Maybe your identity became your sin in that moment.

  259. Or perhaps,

  260. although you had very loving,

  261. very well-intentioned parents,

  262. you still struggled all through your childhood,

  263. and even today,

  264. to separate your behavior

  265. from the verdict of what Jesus says about you.

  266. In our sinful state,

  267. and in our broken world,

  268. we often create a version of God

  269. that's flawed and incorrect.

  270. Blaise Pascal said that

  271. God created man in His own image,

  272. and man returned the favor.

  273. We must not create a version of God

  274. whose expression of emotions

  275. directly mirrors ours

  276. as ours are flawed and imperfect.

  277. The grievance of God

  278. doesn't always look like the grievance of man.

  279. The grievance of God is perfect,

  280. it's holy,

  281. it's pure.

  282. Its motives are without flaw,

  283. and its intentions are always good,

  284. and right.

  285. And so Paul does not want us

  286. to hear him saying

  287. that human emotions

  288. are directly reflected

  289. in divine emotions.

  290. If these are the things,

  291. then, that Paul doesn't want us

  292. to hear him saying,

  293. what do we hear him saying?

  294. What is actually true?

  295. How do we then respond?

  296. You want to know,

  297. okay, Chad, I got it.

  298. How do I not grieve the Spirit?

  299. How do I respond

  300. to the Spirit appropriately?

  301. Here's what you do.

  302. The first,

  303. Paul wants you to understand

  304. that your actions

  305. do impact God's Spirit.

  306. That's the truth.

  307. Your actions

  308. do impact God's Spirit.

  309. The actions of your heart,

  310. of your mind,

  311. of your hands

  312. do indeed

  313. impact God's Spirit.

  314. But this is challenging

  315. for us, right?

  316. It's challenging for us

  317. because it's hard

  318. for us to imagine

  319. that something

  320. that we would do

  321. would affect

  322. God's heart, right?

  323. It feels almost

  324. contradictory for us

  325. to think about

  326. the Holy Spirit,

  327. the Holy Spirit

  328. who seals us

  329. in redemption,

  330. Paul tells us,

  331. who binds us together

  332. in love,

  333. who gives us

  334. a new birth,

  335. who we dwell

  336. in intimacy with,

  337. that that same Spirit

  338. we could cause

  339. to grieve,

  340. that we could cause

  341. that same Spirit

  342. to be sad.

  343. Paul confirms for us

  344. that this is indeed

  345. true,

  346. that our actions

  347. do matter.

  348. But let's consider it

  349. in the analogy

  350. of a parent

  351. and a child.

  352. Think of your own

  353. children.

  354. Think about when

  355. your children sin

  356. or when they disobey.

  357. When they depart

  358. from the way

  359. in which you have

  360. called them to walk in,

  361. how do your hearts respond?

  362. Your hearts are grieved,

  363. right?

  364. You're saddened.

  365. When my daughter

  366. sinfully acts

  367. out towards her brother,

  368. towards her mother,

  369. towards her friends,

  370. I'm saddened

  371. that her heart

  372. has led her

  373. to these actions.

  374. But does that sin

  375. change the way

  376. that I feel

  377. about my daughter?

  378. Absolutely not.

  379. Do I love her less

  380. because she has sinned?

  381. Absolutely not.

  382. But am I grieved

  383. over the fact

  384. that she's a sinner,

  385. that she still sins?

  386. Yes, I am.

  387. These things are not

  388. in contradiction

  389. with each other.

  390. They can actually

  391. live together,

  392. that God can grieve

  393. our sin,

  394. but still never

  395. stop loving us.

  396. This is the correct view

  397. of the divine emotion

  398. that we should consider

  399. from Ephesians.

  400. Just as we never

  401. stop loving our children

  402. in their sin,

  403. even more so,

  404. the Father never,

  405. ever stops loving us,

  406. even as He has grieved

  407. over our sin.

  408. Can you imagine

  409. a father who didn't care

  410. if we sinned?

  411. Can you imagine

  412. if He was so checked out

  413. from our relationship

  414. that our sins

  415. didn't matter to Him?

  416. Actually,

  417. His grievance,

  418. His saddening

  419. over our sin

  420. is an expression

  421. of His love, right?

  422. It's because He cares.

  423. He wants us to walk

  424. as followers of Him.

  425. That's what Paul's

  426. reminding us of.

  427. Our hands and our hearts

  428. produce sin

  429. in such a way

  430. that God is affected

  431. with sadness.

  432. it's affected

  433. because His children,

  434. His children

  435. are not walking

  436. in the way

  437. in which He has called them.

  438. But what's also encouraging

  439. southward

  440. is that the opposite

  441. is true.

  442. That when we do walk

  443. in obedience,

  444. the Spirit is encouraged.

  445. When we walk

  446. in obedience,

  447. the Spirit is encouraged

  448. and lifted up.

  449. God's kingdom

  450. moves forward

  451. as we honor

  452. and obey the Spirit.

  453. So the opposite

  454. is also true.

  455. Just as we can grieve

  456. the Spirit with our sin,

  457. we can lift the Spirit up

  458. in our obedience.

  459. This begs the question then,

  460. what does it look like

  461. to obey?

  462. Specifically from this passage then,

  463. what does it look like

  464. to obey?

  465. There's lots of speculation

  466. about whether Paul

  467. intended for this

  468. to be a standalone statement,

  469. whether Paul intended

  470. for this to be tied

  471. with the rest of the verses.

  472. I'm actually going to go

  473. both ways.

  474. I'm going to say yes.

  475. All right?

  476. So Paul had some things

  477. to say that particularly

  478. applied to this passage,

  479. and it was these things.

  480. That God desires

  481. our obedience

  482. as we are sensitive

  483. to truthfulness

  484. and integrity.

  485. That God desires

  486. obedience to the Spirit

  487. as we respond

  488. to each other

  489. appropriately

  490. in our anger.

  491. God cares about us

  492. doing honest work.

  493. God cares about us

  494. being sensitive

  495. to wholesome talk

  496. coming from our mouths.

  497. God is sensitive

  498. to our hearts

  499. being ruled

  500. by love

  501. and gentleness.

  502. He's sensitive

  503. that all malice,

  504. all slander,

  505. all wrath,

  506. all bitterness

  507. be put away.

  508. So the verses

  509. that are surrounding

  510. this passage

  511. all apply.

  512. Those are ways

  513. to lift up

  514. and encourage the Spirit.

  515. But if we look

  516. at the bigger picture

  517. of Paul's message

  518. in Ephesians,

  519. what has he been telling us

  520. about over and over again?

  521. Unity.

  522. That one of the greatest ways

  523. that you honor the Spirit,

  524. that you lift up the Spirit,

  525. is in your unity.

  526. Paul's warning

  527. is that as we

  528. walk in the way

  529. of our old self,

  530. as we indulge

  531. in our sin,

  532. particularly those

  533. of deception,

  534. theft,

  535. but especially those

  536. that disrupt our unity,

  537. when we do those things,

  538. we are grieving

  539. the Spirit.

  540. One commentator explains

  541. that everything

  542. that is incompatible

  543. with the purity

  544. and the unity

  545. of the church

  546. is incompatible

  547. with the Spirit's

  548. own nature.

  549. Incompatible

  550. with the Spirit's

  551. own nature.

  552. And so because of that,

  553. it's going to naturally

  554. sadden the Spirit

  555. when we don't have unity.

  556. Sins which disrupt

  557. the communal life,

  558. which disrupt

  559. our connection

  560. as the body of Christ,

  561. are in opposition

  562. to the work

  563. of the Spirit.

  564. Because when we are unified,

  565. God's kingdom

  566. can move forward.

  567. When we are unified

  568. as the church,

  569. God's kingdom

  570. moves forward.

  571. The final thing

  572. that we will consider

  573. about the Spirit,

  574. what Paul does tell us

  575. about the Spirit

  576. is this,

  577. and don't miss this.

  578. When we respond

  579. in obedience,

  580. when we honor

  581. the Spirit in obedience,

  582. we do so

  583. as saved

  584. and redeemed people.

  585. When we respond

  586. to the Spirit,

  587. we do so as saved

  588. and redeemed people.

  589. The second clause

  590. of this verse

  591. cannot be separated

  592. from the first clause.

  593. That as we grieve

  594. the Spirit in our disobedience,

  595. the second clause

  596. reminds us of what?

  597. That we were sealed

  598. for the day of redemption.

  599. Paul's creating

  600. two big markers in time,

  601. and he's saying

  602. when you were sealed,

  603. when you were saved,

  604. when you came to

  605. a saving knowledge

  606. of Christ,

  607. the payment for your sin

  608. was forever paid,

  609. and you are now

  610. sealed for heaven.

  611. But then he says

  612. there's also coming

  613. a day of redemption

  614. where your bodies

  615. will receive final redemption

  616. and consummation.

  617. So Paul's establishing

  618. a marker in time

  619. when you were saved,

  620. and then he's establishing

  621. a marker in time

  622. when full consummation,

  623. redemption will happen.

  624. And he says

  625. you live in between

  626. those two markers.

  627. That as you grieve

  628. the Spirit,

  629. you live in between

  630. those two markers,

  631. but don't forget

  632. those two markers.

  633. Don't forget

  634. that as you obey,

  635. you do so as people

  636. who were saved

  637. and people who

  638. were being redeemed.

  639. As we're challenged

  640. not to grieve

  641. the Spirit,

  642. we are reminded

  643. that we live

  644. as people

  645. who are already saved,

  646. beloved,

  647. and who are promised

  648. full redemption.

  649. Southwood,

  650. we cannot miss

  651. the importance

  652. of the gospel

  653. as we consider

  654. how sin

  655. impacts God's Spirit.

  656. To better understand

  657. this message

  658. of God's love,

  659. I want you to hear

  660. from a friend of mine.

  661. He's not actually

  662. a friend.

  663. I wish he was my friend,

  664. and you'll find out

  665. in a minute.

  666. His name is

  667. Brennan Manning.

  668. He's written

  669. a whole host of books.

  670. I would recommend

  671. every book

  672. that he's written.

  673. The video that you're

  674. going to see

  675. was a sermon

  676. that he gave,

  677. and it's not in HD.

  678. The sound quality

  679. is not great,

  680. but that's part of

  681. what I love about it.

  682. It's an unpolished message

  683. about the gospel of grace,

  684. and he says it far better

  685. than I ever will,

  686. so I'd like for you

  687. to hear it from him.

  688. Y'all watch with me.

  689. If you'd like to benefit

  690. most from the worship

  691. this morning,

  692. I would suggest

  693. that from this moment

  694. until you put your head

  695. in the pillow tonight,

  696. you know that the focus

  697. of your inner life

  698. rests on one truth,

  699. the staggering,

  700. mind-blowing truth

  701. that God loves you

  702. just as you are

  703. and not as you should be

  704. because nobody in this building

  705. is as they should be.

  706. That God loves you,

  707. not the person next to you,

  708. not that God loves

  709. Billy Graham,

  710. Mother Teresa,

  711. not that God loves

  712. the church,

  713. the world,

  714. not that God loves

  715. in some vague way

  716. the whole human race,

  717. but the truth

  718. that God loves you

  719. in such a way

  720. that he'd rather die

  721. than be without you.

  722. Isn't it difficult

  723. to believe you're worth

  724. the death of anyone?

  725. Least of all,

  726. the all-holy God.

  727. This moment,

  728. do you truly believe

  729. that God loves you

  730. unconditionally

  731. as you are

  732. and not as you should be?

  733. Do you?

  734. You know,

  735. I've never asked a Christian

  736. in 20 years,

  737. do you believe God loves you?

  738. He's not replied,

  739. oh yeah, yeah.

  740. I've known that quite a while.

  741. In fact,

  742. I've known that since childhood.

  743. And watch the way they live.

  744. Lives of anxiety,

  745. fear,

  746. shame,

  747. guilt,

  748. low self-esteem,

  749. remorse,

  750. self-condemnation,

  751. and self-hatred.

  752. Oh,

  753. they believe that God

  754. loves you in some vague,

  755. distant, abstract way,

  756. but they'd be hard-pressed

  757. to say that right now

  758. the essence

  759. of their Christian life

  760. is a love affair,

  761. and not just a simple

  762. love affair,

  763. but what G.K.

  764. justin' called

  765. a furious

  766. love affair

  767. going on

  768. between Christ themselves

  769. at this very moment.

  770. Do you honestly believe

  771. that with all the wrong turns

  772. you made in your past,

  773. the mistakes,

  774. the detours,

  775. the moments of sin,

  776. selfishness,

  777. dishonesty,

  778. and degraded love,

  779. that God has used them all

  780. to bring them

  781. where you are right now,

  782. and the word says

  783. you are standing

  784. on holy ground?

  785. This moment,

  786. do you honestly believe

  787. that God loves you

  788. beyond worthiness

  789. and unworthiness,

  790. beyond fidelity

  791. and infidelity,

  792. that he loves you

  793. in the morning sun

  794. and the evening rain

  795. without caution,

  796. regret,

  797. boundary,

  798. limit,

  799. breaking point,

  800. no matter what's gone down,

  801. he can't stop loving you.

  802. If you don't fully trust that,

  803. you're living a life

  804. of illusion,

  805. superstition,

  806. cowardice,

  807. you're projecting

  808. onto Jesus

  809. your own hateful feelings

  810. toward yourself,

  811. assuming he feels about you

  812. the way you feel about you,

  813. and thus you're worshipping

  814. a God of human manufacturing,

  815. a God who does not exist.

  816. There is one God

  817. of the Christian vision,

  818. the God revealed

  819. by and in Jesus Christ,

  820. who this moment

  821. walks directly to your seat,

  822. looks you straight

  823. in the eye,

  824. and says,

  825. I have a word for you.

  826. I know your whole life story.

  827. I know every skeleton

  828. in your closet.

  829. I know every moment

  830. of sin,

  831. shame,

  832. dishonesty,

  833. and degraded love

  834. that has darkened

  835. your past.

  836. Right now,

  837. I know your shallow faith,

  838. your feeble prayer life,

  839. your inconsistent discipleship.

  840. Nothing is hidden

  841. from my eyes,

  842. and my word is this.

  843. I dare you to trust

  844. that I love you

  845. as you are,

  846. and not as you should be,

  847. because you're never

  848. going to be

  849. as you should be.

  850. Isn't that powerful?

  851. this powerful truth?

  852. At this moment,

  853. do you truly believe

  854. that God loves you

  855. unconditionally?

  856. At this moment,

  857. do you believe

  858. that God loves you

  859. despite all your failure,

  860. all your doubt,

  861. all your wrongdoing,

  862. all your lying,

  863. your cheating,

  864. your stealing,

  865. your lust,

  866. your degraded love,

  867. your impure motives?

  868. Do you believe

  869. that God loves you

  870. so much

  871. that He can't

  872. stop

  873. pursuing you?

  874. Do you believe

  875. that Jesus

  876. looks at you

  877. and says,

  878. I love you

  879. as you are,

  880. not as you should be,

  881. because you're never

  882. going to be

  883. as you should be?

  884. Brothers and sisters,

  885. our text is telling us

  886. that we live

  887. in this place

  888. where God loves us

  889. just as we are,

  890. not as we should be,

  891. because until that day

  892. of final redemption,

  893. we're never going to be

  894. as we should be.

  895. We're going to continue

  896. to live

  897. as sinful beings

  898. in a broken world,

  899. but God loves you

  900. as you are,

  901. not as you should be.

  902. There are lots of things

  903. that my daughter

  904. can do wrong.

  905. There are plenty of sins

  906. which her heart

  907. is capable of.

  908. She can lie,

  909. she can cause me pain,

  910. she can hurt others

  911. with her words,

  912. she can disrespect,

  913. she can quickly grow

  914. impatient and disobedient.

  915. Each of these things

  916. saddens and grieves me

  917. as her father,

  918. but you know

  919. what grieves me the most?

  920. What hurts my heart

  921. the most

  922. is when she forgets

  923. how much I love her.

  924. My heart is most broken

  925. when my daughter

  926. is led to believe

  927. that her sin

  928. will alter

  929. how I feel about her

  930. or that her sin

  931. says something different

  932. about who she is

  933. besides being

  934. my beloved child.

  935. My heart is most broken

  936. when she does not believe

  937. that she is eternally loved.

  938. This Southwood

  939. is the thing

  940. which I think grieves

  941. the Holy Spirit

  942. the most.

  943. When we refuse

  944. to believe

  945. or we forget

  946. that we are forgiven,

  947. that we are sealed,

  948. that we are covered

  949. in Christ's blood

  950. so that the all-holy God

  951. will never leave us

  952. nor forsake us.

  953. Have you imagined

  954. the gospel

  955. to be so big,

  956. to be so real

  957. in your life

  958. that God the Father

  959. and Jesus Christ

  960. would walk

  961. into this room

  962. right now

  963. that he would sit down

  964. beside you

  965. and he would say,

  966. do you know

  967. how proud I am of you?

  968. That he would walk up

  969. to you and say,

  970. you know what breaks

  971. my heart

  972. is when you refuse

  973. to accept

  974. that every sin

  975. of your past life

  976. is not only forgiven

  977. but it's so forgiven

  978. that I can't even

  979. remember what it was.

  980. Do you know

  981. that I've loved you

  982. from all eternity

  983. and that no matter

  984. what happens

  985. I can't stop

  986. loving you?

  987. Do you believe

  988. that Jesus would tell you

  989. that if he walked

  990. in this room

  991. right now?

  992. Beloved,

  993. this is why

  994. God loves

  995. and adores you

  996. because of his son,

  997. because of what

  998. Jesus did for you.

  999. Your sins

  1000. have been eternally

  1001. forgiven.

  1002. When the Father

  1003. looks at you,

1004. he doesn't look at you

  1005. with shameful contempt.

  1006. He looks at you

  1007. and he smiles.

  1008. This God,

  1009. his Holy Spirit

  1010. who we love

  1011. and serve

  1012. with our lives

  1013. is the same God

  1014. who gave us

  1015. his son

  1016. who paid the debt

  1017. for our sins

  1018. so that God's promises

  1019. would be fully

  1020. redeemed again.

  1021. Redeemed,

  1022. forgiven,

  1023. and loved.

1024. This is who you are

  1025. before God the Father

1026. and God does not want you

  1027. to ever forget it.

  1028. You are his

  1029. forever.

  1030. Let's pray.

  1031. Father,

  1032. could this

  1033. glorious news

  1034. be true

  1035. that no matter

  1036. how wicked

  1037. the works

  1038. of our hands,

  1039. no matter

  1040. how sinful

  1041. our hearts,

  1042. that you would

  1043. offer us

  1044. love,

  1045. forgiveness,

  1046. and redemption.

  1047. Father,

  1048. thank you.

  1049. Thank you for

  1050. the Spirit

  1051. who not only

  1052. grieves

  1053. in our disobedience,

  1054. but the Spirit

  1055. who lovingly

  1056. comes into

  1057. our hearts

  1058. and lives.

  1059. Father,

  1060. hopefully right now

  1061. in this moment

  1062. and reminds us

  1063. of this truth,

  1064. reminds us

  1065. of the good news

  1066. of the gospel.

  1067. Would you work that

  1068. in the hearts

  1069. of these,

  1070. your people?

  1071. Would you remind us

  1072. of this,

  1073. not only today

  1074. but throughout this week

  1075. as we enter

  1076. into a broken

  1077. and sinful world

  1078. and face the reality

  1079. of our sinful hearts

  1080. again?

  1081. Father,

  1082. remind us

  1083. of this good news

  1084. and we thank you

  1085. for it.

  1086. In Jesus' name.

  1087. Amen.
