  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. Well, good morning. It is good to be with you. Not only have we had a long association awareness of Southwood,

  4. Jean LaRue and I have been in a pastor's group for a long time.

  5. I always told him, I said, you are the most interesting man in the world from the Dos Equis commercial.

  6. And by contrast, I feel like the least interesting man in the world.

  7. We have learned and wept and walked with each other through a lot.

  8. So I'm grateful to be a part here with you this morning.

  9. I asked Will, knowing you're going through the study of Ephesians, if I should just step in right where you left off.

  10. He says, please don't. So he said, maybe it'd be good to do something different.

  11. So we're going to do something really different and step into an Old Testament narrative.

  12. The challenge is going to be we're going to step into the middle of the book.

  13. So if I just had to stand up and read it right now, your brain would be mush by the end of the passage.

  14. So it will help if we kind of approach it like a play and do a scene at a time.

  15. So we'll look at the scripture in the body of the message.

  16. Okay.

  17. We'll be in Esther chapter 8.

    Esther 8 chapter mention

  18. If you want to turn here, turn there, it'll also be on the screen.

  19. Let me pray for us as we come to God's word.

  20. Father, you've been wooing and drawing our hearts through words penned by people weak and wounded by the fall of a hope that takes our breath away.

  21. We've celebrated the sacraments, that mystery of your presence being manifest in an unusual way that we don't even fully understand.

  22. Your scripture tells us that when we gather here, what's happening here, though much is pressing in on us from outside this room,

  23. that it's a picture.

  24. It's the closest that we get to the heavenly courts and the presence of Christ, the fullness of Christ's body,

  25. worshiping in patterns that have been long established that mirror what's happening in heaven.

  26. As we live in this already-not-yet season, would you touch and woo and take our breath away and melt our hearts by your story?

  27. As we step into an ancient story, would we find ourselves there?

  28. Would the dots connect to our lives?

  29. And may we have a sense that you're wooing and calling, whether we've never believed before or have heard this story over and over again.

  30. Oh, Spirit, would you be so present as to exalt Jesus in this story and meet us, we pray.

  31. In Jesus' name, amen.

  32. Amen.

  33. Crazy busy pace.

  34. 24-7 connectivity.

  35. Aren't you glad how technology has saved you so much time?

  36. The insecurity, financial and otherwise, in a post-11 world equals overwhelmed.

  37. Culturally, more than any other time that I've been an adult, I just sense, I'm here not just busy, I'm here, I'm completely overwhelmed.

  38. Young families, young moms show up on this door just so glad to be in the doors because life can feel so overwhelming.

  39. The pace just keeps ramping up.

  40. And then you turn on Fox News or MSNBC.

  41. And you discover we live in such a polarized culture, they're so afraid of one another, we can't even hear one another talk.

  42. We're just screaming over one another and missing one another, and there's this huge cultural divide.

  43. And then you think about being the church, where you know a big part of what we're called to be is outward facing, impacting our culture.

  44. And overwhelm in the midst of a culture where we cannot hear one another leaves us feeling guilty and often not knowing where to turn as the people of God.

  45. But what we're going to unfold as we step into this ancient story this morning is how an overwhelmed people of God live missionally in a culture where we can barely hear one another.

  46. How can an already overwhelmed people who are called to live missional lives live missional lives in a culture where we can't hear one another?

  47. Esther chapter 8 will unfold the story in four scenes.

    Esther 8 chapter mention

  48. It's a scene, just to help you remember, of a ring, a plea, a decree, and a party.

  49. A ring, a plea, a decree, and a party.

  50. Here's scene one.

  51. Esther chapter 8 verse 1.

    Esther 8:1

  52. On that day, King Ahasuerus gave to Queen Esther the house of Haman, the enemy of the Jews.

  53. And Mordecai came before the king, for Esther had told what he was to her.

  54. And the king took off his signerine for which he had taken from Haman and gave it to Mordecai.

  55. And Esther set Mordecai over the house of Haman.

  56. Now there's a tremendous backstory that's been going on.

  57. Let me help you fill it in if you've heard it before or maybe have not heard it before.

  58. Ahasuerus was king of Persia about 450 years before Jesus came to earth.

  59. It's in present-day Iraq, Iran.

  60. It was kind of his area, massive territory.

  61. And he was the king on the block.

  62. With incredible wealth, they had captured from all the nations.

  63. And he decides to throw an incredible, world's most raucous fraternity party for six months.

  64. And they don't go to class.

  65. I know some of you went to school like that too, but probably not so much in Huntsville.

  66. They partied for six months.

  67. At the end of the six months, during the last week, he says,

  68. let's let everybody in on this party because he was just kind of throwing a party

  69. for his inner circle buddies who extended his role around his empire.

  70. But they have a party for the whole people.

  71. And he gets this great idea as he and everyone else is completely sloshed.

  72. Let's have my, according to Ricky Bobby, smoking hot wife Vashti come and perform for us.

  73. I mean, every girl's dream, right?

  74. To come before a room full of drunken men and dance.

  75. Queen Vashti says, I'm not coming.

  76. I've got my own party with my own girls.

  77. We're staying here.

  78. See, you didn't tell kings no back then.

  79. Telling a king no meant you're gone.

  80. And that's what happened with Vashti.

  81. She was smoking hot, but she was no more.

  82. The king, to fill her place, decides, you know what we're going to do?

  83. The first episode of The Bachelor.

  84. We're going to invite the most beautiful women from all over my empire to come and try out to be my wife.

  85. In the midst of these women from all over the empire coming like in all bachelor-like, you know, craziness,

  86. to try out to be the queen.

  87. There is one who is discovered.

  88. She's a little bit undercover, but she is stunning.

  89. Her name is Esther.

  90. She's orphaned.

  91. This is a time where the Israelites had come back to the land,

  92. but she is still a part of a small minority who live abroad,

  93. having been taken in the Babylonian empire.

  94. She's being raised by an uncle who we saw about.

  95. Her uncle is Mordecai.

  96. Mordecai had great respect as a servant of the king,

  97. but he instructed Esther to keep it quiet that they were Jews.

  98. But Esther's beauty was such that she could not be ignored,

  99. and she was invited into the contest,

  100. and she replaces Vashti as this beautiful queen of King Ahasuerus.

  101. Meanwhile, there's a prime minister that gets appointed.

  102. His name is Haman.

  103. Haman loved his power, and it was driven by pride,

  104. and the king issued an edict at his request

  105. that wherever he would go, people would have to bow.

  106. Mordecai was a servant in the king's court,

  107. and he was at the city gate one day when Haman walks by,

  108. and he doesn't bow, and Haman could not get over it.

  109. As his wealth and his stature and his power grew,

  110. he still couldn't deal with the fact that Mordecai would not bow.

  111. So he came up with a plot.

  112. He came up with a plea that became an edict of the king

  113. because he had discovered that Mordecai was a Jew.

  114. And the edict with the king's signet ring that went out across the empire was this.

  115. Every Jewish man, woman, and child were to be killed because they were a threat to the empire.

  116. Mordecai hears about the plot and comes out dressed in sackcloth and public weeping,

  117. and then he goes privately to Esther, who the king still does not know is a Jew.

  118. And he says,

  119. It is for such a time as this that God has appointed for you to go before the king.

  120. Esther protested because she had kind of kept undercover Christian or undercover Jew working up till this point,

  121. but also culturally working against her was for you could not request to come to the king's presence.

  122. The king had to request you.

  123. The only exception was if a golden scepter was extended,

  124. then your life would not be taken.

  125. Otherwise, it would.

  126. She risks and she goes.

  127. Meanwhile, Haman is thinking of all the glory he's going to receive because one night,

  128. King Ahasuerus falls asleep and can't stay asleep,

  129. wakes up and reads his chronicles where he discovers that Mordecai, his servant,

  130. had exposed an assassination attempt against him and saved his life,

  131. but Mordecai was never awarded.

  132. Meanwhile, King Ahasuerus is planning to award him.

  133. Haman is not knowing it.

  134. Haman has a way to take the life by building a gallows to take Mordecai's life.

  135. But at the second feast, when Esther comes clean on her identity as a Jew,

  136. the edict that Haman has proclaimed,

  137. his participation in a plot that would erase her people,

  138. he's exposed.

  139. And the very gallows upon which Mordecai was to die,

  140. Haman is executed.

  141. And so what we find here as we open up the storyline in this first scene in chapter 8,

  142. is Mordecai becomes prime minister.

  143. It's marked by receiving a signet ring.

  144. Two Jews oppressed in the land with a signet ring,

  145. a position of influence to do redemptive things in the kingdom for their people.

  146. Scene 1.

  147. Scene 2.

  148. Let's look at the passage, the plea.

  149. It's a ring, a plea, verse 3.

  150. Then Esther spoke again to the king.

  151. She fell at his feet and wept,

  152. and pleaded with him to avert the evil plan,

  153. Haman the Agagite.

  154. That's easy for you to say.

  155. The Agagite.

  156. And the plot that he had devised against the Jews.

  157. Here's what's interesting.

  158. Agagite also means Amalekite.

  159. Now if you, like, paid attention in Sunday school growing up,

  160. you may have a little distant memory of Amalekites.

  161. When Israel was going in the wilderness to enter the land,

  162. they opposed Israel so dramatically that God had to show up through Moses holding his hands up.

  163. And when King Saul came into power,

  164. he was commissioned to completely, completely annihilate the Amalekites.

  165. But you remember what happens?

  166. It's where God's favor falls from him.

  167. God's favor falls because he did not completely wipe out the Amalekites.

  168. And here we have Mordecai, a Jew, a descendant of Saul,

  169. facing an Amalekite in a foreign land again.

  170. Interesting thing, Herod, who was in charge when Jesus was born,

  171. was an Amalekite as well.

  172. This ongoing conflict.

  173. Look at verse 4.

  174. When the king held out the golden scepter to Esther,

  175. okay, she's going to be alive,

  176. Esther rose and stood before the king,

  177. and she said,

  178. If it please the king,

  179. and if I have found favor in his sight,

  180. and if the thing seems right before him,

  181. and I'm pleasing in his eyes,

  182. boy, she's building a case, isn't she,

  183. let an order be written to revoke or reverse the letters devised by Haman the Agagite,

  184. the son of Hamadathah,

  185. which he wrote to destroy the Jews who are in all the provinces of the king.

  186. For how can I bear to see the calamity that is coming to my people?

  187. Or how can I bear to see the destruction of my kindred?

  188. Then King Ahasuerus said to Queen Esther and to Mordecai the Jew,

  189. Behold, I have given Esther the house of Haman,

  190. and they have hanged him on the gallows,

  191. because he intended to lay hands on the Jews.

  192. But you may write as you please with regard to the Jews in the name of the king,

  193. and seal it with the king's ring.

  194. For an edict written in the name of the king and sealed with the king's ring cannot be revoked.

  195. He's actually saying two things.

  196. I can't make Haman's edict go away.

  197. But if you can figure out a way, Mordecai and Esther,

  198. to preserve the lives of the people in light of that edict going out,

  199. I will let you take my signet green.

  200. And in her plea for her people,

  201. because of the great effect of the curse,

  202. living in a fallen world,

  203. perpetrated by a fallen man, Haman,

  204. she intervenes with a plea,

  205. a need that moves her to tears at the feet of the king,

  206. to intercede not just on her welfare,

  207. but on behalf of the welfare of the entire people.

  208. In response to her plea,

  209. King Ahasuerus gives an okay for an alternate decree to be made.

  210. In scene three, we see that decree.

  211. Verse nine.

  212. The king's scribes were summoned at that time in the third month,

  213. which is the month of Sivan, on the 23rd day.

  214. And an edict was written according to all that Mordecai commanded concerning the Jews.

  215. So the satraps and the governors and the officials of the provinces from India to Ethiopia,

  216. that's a stretch,

  217. 127 provinces to each province in its own script.

  218. Can you imagine the translation work?

  219. And to each people in its own language,

  220. and also to the Jews in their script and their language.

  221. And he wrote in the name of King Ahasuerus and sealed it with the king's signet ring.

  222. Then he sent letters by mounted couriers,

  223. riding on swift horses that were used in the king's service,

  224. bred from the royal stud.

  225. I like that.

  226. Saying that the king allowed the Jews who were in every city to gather and defend their lives,

  227. to destroy, kill, and to annihilate.

  228. That's in Esther chapter three.

  229. That's a reversal of the command.

  230. Israel, Jews were supposed to be destroyed, killed, annihilated.

  231. And that they could do that against any armed force of any people or province that might attack them,

  232. children and women included,

  233. and to plunder their goods.

  234. On one day throughout all the provinces of King Ahasuerus,

  235. on the 13th day of the 12th month,

  236. which is the month of Adair,

  237. a copy of what was written was to be issued as a decree in every province,

  238. being publicly displayed to all peoples.

  239. And the Jews were to be ready on that day to take vengeance on their enemies.

  240. So the couriers, mounted on their swift horses that were used in the king's service,

  241. rode out and hurriedly, urged by the king's command,

  242. and the decree was issued in Susa, the citadel or the capital.

  243. You see what happened?

  244. Esther and Mordecai penned a decree that would give Jews the right to defend themselves,

  245. to thwart the decree that was made by Haman.

  246. What are they doing?

  247. They're reversing the curse.

  248. The curse that had been pronounced upon the Jews,

  249. that intersected their lives in a very profound, real way,

  250. not just for them, but for all their kindred spread throughout the kingdom of Ahasuerus.

  251. They reversed the curse.

  252. So that instead of a decree of death,

  253. the Jews, the people of God, could experience a decree that would bring life.

  254. It's a ring.

  255. It's a plea.

  256. It's a decree that turns into the foreseen a party.

  257. Look at verses 15 through 17.

  258. Then Mordecai went out from the presence of the king in royal robes of blue and white,

  259. with a golden crown and a robe of fine linen and purple.

  260. The city of Susa shouted and rejoiced.

  261. This is how Haman thought he was going to dress.

  262. And now we find Mordecai as the curse has been reversed in his place.

  263. Verse 16,

  264. The Jews had light and gladness and joy and honor.

  265. They're restored from shame, restored from the curse.

  266. And in every province and in every city,

  267. wherever the king's command and his edict reached,

  268. there was gladness and joy among the Jews, a feast and a holiday.

  269. And get this,

  270. And many from the peoples of the country declared themselves Jews they wanted in the party,

  271. for fear of the Jews had fallen all on them.

  272. You see the wonder of a story,

  273. of a ring for such a time as this,

  274. a plea that met the woundedness,

  275. the fears,

  276. and yet the hope for a reversal by a decree

  277. that turned into a party for the whole country

  278. to celebrate a reversal of the curse

  279. so everyone else wanted in.

  280. You see the beauty of this story in those four scenes

  281. is it really helps us understand the whole gospel storyline

  282. that's woven throughout the pages of scripture.

  283. The ring corresponds to the story of creation

  284. where we're made to flourish and exercise benevolent rule

  285. that brings flourishing and shalom and wholeness to all of earth.

  286. But the fall means we're all broken and wounded.

  287. Despite having the image of glory in us,

  288. we limp big time

  289. because of the effects of the curse in our world.

  290. The biblical story goes on from the fall though

  291. as you open the pages of the New Testament to redemption.

  292. of one who came to issue an edict and a decree

  293. that would make all things new

  294. and the good news of the gospel.

  295. And one day there will be a party

  296. like no other party before

  297. when every tear will be wiped away from our eyes

  298. and everything is made new.

  299. Heaven comes down

  300. and everything that's sad becomes untrue.

  301. Esther's story was the gospel story.

  302. Mordecai's involvement with Esther

  303. in reversing the curse

  304. pictures the gospel storyline.

  305. And it pictures the storyline

  306. of each of our lives as well.

  307. Connect to that feeling of overwhelm.

  308. Connect to that sense of awareness

  309. if you're a part of Christ's church

  310. and probably even if you're not a part of church,

  311. you know the church is called to mission.

  312. What does missional living mean

  313. for an overwhelmed people

  314. in a culture where we can't even hear one another?

  315. Based on this story,

  316. I would suggest missional living is this.

  317. Missional living

  318. is reversing the curse

  319. right where you feel the need for it most.

  320. Missional living is reversing the curse

  321. right where you feel the need for it most.

  322. Now because the church I'm at

  323. at Oak Mountain Prez

  324. and this church really treasure

  325. the gospel,

  326. we probably share some similarities.

  327. Here's what we're finding out at Oak Mountain

  328. that you may have experienced as well.

  329. Coming to Oak Mountain for many people

  330. has offered and I've just been there a year and a half

  331. so I have like zilch contribution to this hardly at all.

  332. It's just the faithfulness of the free gospel

  333. being preached powerfully.

  334. Most people have found in the church

  335. a fresh drink of the gospel

  336. that makes their souls say yes

  337. after having been beat up and bruised

  338. by the legalistic church for a long time.

  339. Then we've also experienced real safe community

  340. where you don't really have to pretend

  341. and can come clean about the struggles in your life.

  342. I mean, a fresh drink of the gospel,

  343. a safe community where I can come clean

  344. and hope in the gospel

  345. and we're like, home run.

  346. We're done.

  347. We're here.

  348. Ah, yes.

  349. It's kind of like we've hit a triple

  350. and hitting a triple is really exciting.

  351. The whole crowd cheers.

  352. You dust yourself off,

  353. but you still got to get home.

  354. The richness of the gospel that we experience

  355. between us and Christ

  356. and in community with one another

  357. is the same power

  358. that needs to bubble over in our lives

  359. with the needs that we experience

  360. right alongside real and normal people

  361. with whom we do life.

  362. Missional living

  363. is where you feel the weight of the curse the most

  364. and you begin dreaming

  365. and moving to reverse it.

  366. If you've read Jeremiah 29 before,

  367. it talks about the commission

  368. to the people of God

  369. prior to the story of Esther

  370. when the people were in captivity

  371. and Jeremiah's in Jerusalem

  372. and riding back.

  373. I won't turn there for the sake of time,

  374. but he says,

  375. hey, people are saying

  376. you're about out of here,

  377. so don't invest in the city.

  378. He's saying you're going to be there for 70 years.

  379. You are exiles,

  380. but here's how I want you to function.

  381. Get jobs.

  382. Build homes.

  383. Cultivate gardens.

  384. Have children.

  385. Give away children.

  386. And in the midst of just the normal stuff in life

  387. that you're already doing,

  388. seek the welfare,

  389. the Hebrew word actually,

  390. seek the shalom,

  391. the fullness,

  392. the wholeness,

  393. the peace,

  394. the world as it should ought to be.

  395. Seek the welfare

  396. or the shalom of the city

  397. and you know what the promise is next?

  398. And in it,

  399. you will find

  400. your welfare,

  401. your shalom.

  402. For a people

  403. who have experienced

  404. a fresh drink of the gospel

  405. in a way that's transforming your lives

  406. and the contents of your friendships

  407. and families,

  408. that good news

  409. in the midst of your brokenness

  410. is extended to those

  411. outside the walls of this church

  412. in breathtaking ways,

  413. but in the normal stuff of life.

  414. Thursday night,

  415. I got together with a group

  416. of college students

  417. from our church

  418. and we watched way, way back.

  419. It's really weird

  420. anytime Steve Carell

  421. is in a serious movie.

  422. the first line,

  423. the first scene

  424. slayed me.

  425. Steve Carell's character,

  426. I think he's Trent,

  427. is dating

  428. a woman

  429. who has two kids.

  430. I don't know

  431. where they found

  432. an old station wagon,

  433. but do you remember

  434. old station wagons?

  435. If you saw the movie,

  436. there's a back seat

  437. that faces back

  438. and there's a little boy

  439. named Duncan

  440. who's about 13,

  441. as awkward

  442. as he can possibly be,

  443. shoulders slumped over,

  444. who's just trying

  445. to look out

  446. to get away

  447. from what else

  448. is happening in the car.

  449. He wants nothing of it.

  450. Trent refuses

  451. to let him be disengaged

  452. and so he begins

  453. conversation like this,

  454. Duncan,

  455. what are you?

  456. On a scale of one to ten,

  457. what are you?

  458. Duncan,

  459. like most adolescent boys,

  460. says,

  461. I don't know.

  462. He doesn't want to answer,

  463. comes up with a grunt.

  464. Trent keeps pressing,

  465. no, what are you?

  466. Like ten being really good,

  467. one being nothing,

  468. what are you

  469. on a scale of one to ten?

  470. Duncan finally relents

  471. and says,

  472. I don't know,

  473. like six or a seven?

  474. Trent goes,

  475. no,

  476. no,

  477. you're not a six

  478. or a seven,

  479. that's way too high.

  480. You're a three.

  481. That's what you are.

  482. You're a three.

  483. I'm undone.

  484. I know the feeling of shame

  485. so powerful

  486. where people treat you

  487. as if you're a three.

  488. It's like I may as well

  489. have been in the back seat

  490. with Duncan.

  491. As the storyline goes on,

  492. he finds his way

  493. to a water park,

  494. which is run by a guy

  495. who probably did not win,

  496. most likely to succeed

  497. in high school.

  498. His name is Owen.

  499. Owen leads a group

  500. of people

  501. who are like an island

  502. of misfit toys

  503. at this little water park.

  504. But every life

  505. that Owen touches,

  506. even in their awkwardness

  507. where the world

  508. would bring shame,

  509. you know what Owen does?

  510. he lifts their heads.

  511. He treats them

  512. as the image bearers

  513. that they are.

  514. His own story

  515. filled with shame,

  516. but wherever Owen goes,

  517. he lifts people's heads

  518. from the shame.

  519. That's what the people

  520. of God are called to do.

  521. In a world

  522. that feels like a three,

  523. we lift their heads

  524. to see the beauty

  525. and wonder

  526. of being created

  527. in the image of God.

  528. Here's what I've found

  529. within the evangelical church

  530. is we're really strong

  531. on two of the four movements

  532. of the gospel storyline.

  533. We're big on sin

  534. and the reality of that,

  535. sometimes in really healthy ways,

  536. sometimes in very judgmental ways,

  537. and we're really big

  538. on redemption as well.

  539. But you know what we forget

  540. in relating to people?

  541. We forget stage one,

  542. scene one, creation.

  543. That everyone,

  544. whether they name the name

  545. of Jesus or not,

  546. are image bearers,

  547. but who are also fallen,

  548. living with this deep-seated unease

  549. of I'm not okay

  550. with who I am.

  551. The people of God

  552. in every age

  553. and every sphere

  554. are people who bear the image

  555. and treat people to the image

  556. so that we are people

  557. who call out the glory

  558. and the wonder

  559. of how one another

  560. are made

  561. in the midst of the world

  562. that just presses

  563. their shame,

  564. calling you a three.

  565. A people on mission

  566. lift the heads

  567. right in the normal stuff of life

  568. from the place of shame

  569. to a place of honor

  570. and glory

  571. so that that curse

  572. is reversed.

  573. There's a sociologist

  574. from UVA,

  575. Charlottesville,

  576. who's really a fascinating man.

  577. I've had a chance

  578. to interact with him.

  579. His name is James Davison Hunter.

  580. He came out,

  581. he's a follower of Christ,

  582. he came out

  583. of the evangelical movement,

  584. but grew disappointed

  585. in his development

  586. at two main projects

  587. of the evangelical church

  588. in the past 30 years.

  589. One was,

  590. we're going to change the world

  591. through sharing the gospel

  592. with individuals,

  593. and eventually

  594. the grassroots of that

  595. will just bubble up

  596. and change our culture.

  597. The other project

  598. at work in evangelicalism

  599. was the Christian right,

  600. which had a political agenda

  601. and created a huge culture war

  602. that created and helped fuel

  603. an MSNBC, Fox News

  604. kind of culture today.

  605. I might make you mad,

  606. he said it,

  607. offers research,

  608. you get the book,

  609. you read it,

  610. weigh his arguments.

  611. He's saying,

  612. neither are ways,

  613. neither are ways

  614. to change the world

  615. and change our culture.

  616. Now he's not saying,

  617. not arguing against evangelism,

  618. okay?

  619. He's not arguing against

  620. some of the values

  621. that the religious right

  622. have advanced.

  623. He's just saying

  624. those approaches

  625. on their own

  626. will not reverse the curse.

  627. Instead he argues,

  628. what would?

  629. which he terms

  630. faithful presence

  631. in key places

  632. that God has called us

  633. for such a time as this.

  634. Faithful presence,

  635. just in the normal arenas

  636. in life

  637. and platforms

  638. that God has entrusted to you,

  639. where you're CEO

  640. of a company

  641. or you're wiping bottoms

  642. at home.

  643. whatever the place,

  644. faithful presence

  645. over time

  646. for such a time

  647. as this

  648. to reverse

  649. the curse

  650. wherever we are.

  651. As I've been trying

  652. to help people

  653. flesh out

  654. what this looks like,

  655. I've thought of it

  656. in three phases.

  657. Normally,

  658. if you think about

  659. moving out,

  660. you think of the third phase

  661. of where you have to

  662. announce good news.

  663. Who,

  664. if you're a church person,

  665. has heard before

  666. that you should

  667. announce the good news

  668. to others?

  669. You heard that?

  670. Who here feels

  671. really guilty

  672. for how little you do it?

  673. And it's because

  674. we think we've got

  675. to start right here.

  676. A great way

  677. to think

  678. in light of the story

  679. in which we're

  680. stepping into

  681. in the gospel storyline

  682. is to remember

  683. the creation story

  684. and to live

  685. for the flourishing

  686. of shalom

  687. right where you are,

  688. where you seek

  689. the common good.

  690. My experience

  691. has been

  692. that when I seek

  693. the common good,

  694. locked arms

  695. with people in the city,

  696. that because they have

  697. the image of God

  698. within them,

  699. they're aspiring

  700. for the same kind

  701. of things

  702. that we would want

  703. to see when all things

  704. are renewed.

  705. And oftentimes,

  706. the church

  707. has not been

  708. in the game,

  709. but linking arms

  710. where we're seeking

  711. right where we are

  712. the common good

  713. creates an incredible

  714. dynamic for establishing

  715. common ground.

  716. I had a friend

  717. who I was on the

  718. North Chattanooga

  719. Chamber of Commerce

  720. with who had

  721. kind of one of the

  722. wildest reputations

  723. in town,

  724. even in his mid-50s,

  725. he was a handsome

  726. looking guy,

  727. and he went for it

  728. big time in the city.

  729. In the midst

  730. of me just participating

  731. and dreaming big dreams

  732. for North Chattanooga,

  733. we began to have

  734. heart dialogue

  735. that we could never

  736. have had

  737. if I had started

  738. over here.

  739. In fact,

  740. he wanted to change

  741. the motto

  742. of the North Chattanooga

  743. Chamber of Commerce

  744. from where you live,

  745. work, and play

  746. to where you live,

  747. work, play, and pray.

  748. I said,

  749. I'm not asking for that.

  750. But his heart

  751. was moving.

  752. We were finding

  753. common ground

  754. as we began

  755. to dream

  756. for reversing

  757. the curse

  758. kinds of things

  759. that he knew

  760. his heart longed for

  761. because he was

  762. an image bearer.

  763. And when we're

  764. able to connect

  765. and pursue

  766. people's hearts

  767. in common ground,

  768. then we can unfold

  769. the good news.

  770. In every sphere

  771. of life,

  772. vocation,

  773. neighborhood,

  774. recreation,

  775. just social

  776. kind of things,

  777. the gospel storyline

  778. infuses it

  779. with meaning.

  780. I've been working

  781. with a group

  782. of lawyers

  783. and trying to say,

  784. okay,

  785. what's the worldview

  786. at work

  787. within the

  788. lawyering profession

  789. right now?

  790. Here was essentially

  791. what it was.

  792. Win at all costs,

  793. now,

  794. and build the most hours

  795. was the worldview

  796. in which many

  797. who practice law

  798. function.

  799. I said,

  800. how does that compare

  801. to the gospel storyline?

  802. I said this,

  803. do you know

  804. you're made to win?

  805. Like to flourish

  806. as a lawyer

  807. in your vocation

  808. pleases God?

  809. It's the,

  810. when I run,

  811. I feel his pleasure

  812. of your vocation.

  813. It's great

  814. to want to flourish

  815. for the power

  816. of justice,

  817. for the welfare

  818. of your clients,

  819. for the welfare

  820. of your family.

  821. It's wonderful

  822. to think of flourishing.

  823. But the at all cost part,

  824. that's fall.

  825. Like the at all cost

  826. really says,

  827. justice is not

  828. our ultimate goal.

  829. The bottom line is.

  830. And then build

  831. the most hours now

  832. essentially says this,

  833. you're your own redeemer.

  834. Go for it.

  835. And the now says

  836. there is no future.

  837. So go for it now.

  838. You know what

  839. the gospel storyline

  840. for law would be?

  841. It's simply this,

  842. we're made to flourish

  843. with justice.

  844. You know why

  845. they're lawyer jokes?

  846. Because everyone

  847. deep down knows

  848. that we were made

  849. for justice.

  850. You're traffic,

  851. as a lawyer,

  852. you're trafficking

  853. in a commodity

  854. of justice.

  855. You're made

  856. for it to flourish.

  857. But you're redemptive.

  858. You're not

  859. when at all cost.

  860. What you're trying

  861. to do

  862. is picture for people

  863. justice

  864. that's just

  865. breathtaking

  866. because it honors

  867. both parties

  868. as image bearers.

  869. And you're picturing

  870. what full justice

  871. one day will be

  872. when Jesus' reign

  873. is fully established.

  874. You see,

  875. in our vocations,

  876. in our neighborhoods,

  877. we're to think

  878. of the gospel storyline

  879. to see how

  880. our spheres of influence

  881. are infused

  882. with vibrant color

  883. and rich content

  884. that reverses

  885. the curse

  886. to take people's

  887. breath away

  888. with what they know

  889. that they were made for.

  890. When you get

  891. from seeking

  892. the common good

  893. to establishing

  894. the common ground,

  895. what I'm trying to do

  896. as I'm pursuing

  897. people's hearts,

  898. I'm trying to do

  899. gospel storyline

  900. in their lives

  901. of what they were made for,

  902. how they're weak

  903. and wounded

  904. by the fall,

  905. what redemption

  906. would look like

  907. if Jesus

  908. were to come vibrant

  909. in that area

  910. of their woundedness,

  911. and what might

  912. they look like

  913. one day

  914. fully redeemed

  915. and glorified.

  916. And then I share

  917. my story

  918. of how God

  919. made me

  920. of how I'm

  921. weak and wounded

  922. with shame

  923. by the fall,

  924. but how Christ

  925. is redeeming,

  926. and one day

  927. those tears

  928. and that shame

  929. will be completely gone,

  930. and then I can

  931. unfold God's story

  932. of creation,

  933. fall,

  934. redemption,

  935. and the restoration

  936. of all things.

  937. Missional living

  938. is seeking

  939. to reverse

  940. the curse

  941. right where you feel

  942. it the most.

  943. Think about

  944. Jesus'

  945. embodiment

  946. of the truth

  947. of this passage.

  948. Look at Colossians 2,

  949. 13-15.

  950. When you were dead

  951. in your transgressions

  952. and the uncircumcision

  953. of your flesh,

  954. he made you alive

  955. together with him,

  956. having forgiven us

  957. all our transgressions,

  958. having canceled out

  959. the certificate of debt,

  960. that decree,

  961. consisting of decrees

  962. against us,

  963. which was hostile

  964. to us,

  965. and he has taken it

  966. out of the way,

  967. having nailed it

  968. to the cross.

  969. When he had disarmed

  970. the rulers

  971. and authorities,

  972. he made a public

  973. display of them,

  974. having triumphed

  975. over them

  976. through him.

  977. What a beautiful summary

  978. of a picture

  979. of the ultimate

  980. fulfillment

  981. of the Esther story.

  982. You have,

  983. in essence,

  984. an overwhelmed,

  985. weeping,

  986. and pleading son,

  987. who gave his very life

  988. to reverse the curse

  989. so that you and I

  990. might be invited

  991. to the party.

  992. What do you think

  993. with me as we think

  994. about the richness

  995. of Christ

  996. embodying this,

  997. of what this might

  998. mean for us?

  999. What's the ring,

  1000. the station,

  1001. and life

1002. that God has given you?

  1003. right where you are,

  1004. not signing up

  1005. for one more thing

  1006. in an already

  1007. overstuffed life.

  1008. What's the stamp

  1009. of glory

  1010. and the position

1011. in life he's given you

  1012. in which you're called

  1013. to bring about

  1014. shalom

  1015. in the place

  1016. of shame?

  1017. What's the ring?

  1018. What's the place?

  1019. What's the place

  1020. of honor and position

  1021. that God

  1022. is burdening

  1023. your heart

  1024. with the most?

  1025. Second,

  1026. what's your plea?

  1027. How is the shame

  1028. of the fall

  1029. pressing in?

  1030. Like if you're

  1031. in survival

  1032. young mom mode,

  1033. it just might mean

  1034. you think you're

  1035. going to go crazy

  1036. if you don't have

  1037. a play group.

  1038. That would count.

  1039. The weak and woundedness

  1040. of the fall

  1041. and the station

  1042. in life you're in.

  1043. Maybe there's

  1044. an injustice

  1045. at work.

  1046. Maybe there's a need

  1047. in your neighborhood.

  1048. Maybe there's lack

  1049. of community

  1050. in your neighborhood

1051. or in your kid's school.

  1052. What is a need

  1053. that would give you

  1054. great joy

  1055. to move towards it?

  1056. You know what

  1057. Frederick Buechner

  1058. called call?

  1059. It's where your

  1060. greatest joy

  1061. and culture's

  1062. greatest need

  1063. meet.

  1064. I think you could

  1065. also say it.

  1066. Call is where

  1067. your greatest wounds

  1068. and culture's

  1069. your sphere

  1070. of influence

  1071. greatest need

  1072. kiss.

  1073. It's not different

  1074. than that.

  1075. It's right

  1076. in that place.

  1077. And then

  1078. what's the decree?

  1079. How can the decree

  1080. of God's good news,

  1081. the decree

  1082. of the gospel,

  1083. go at work

  1084. in that particular

  1085. sphere of influence

  1086. that you're in

  1087. to reverse the curse?

  1088. What needs

  1089. reversing?

  1090. What if

  1091. if I approached

  1092. it

  1093. and brought

  1094. life,

  1095. would put

  1096. defenses

  1097. down

  1098. so that we

  1099. could hear

  1100. one another

  1101. and take

  1102. someone else's

  1103. breath away

  1104. as that need

  1105. was met,

  1106. both in my life

  1107. and those

  1108. I'm trying

  1109. to serve?

  1110. And then finally,

  1111. have a party.

  1112. Invite others

  1113. in to the beauty

  1114. and the wonder

  1115. of reversing

  1116. the curse

  1117. because when we

  1118. move to reverse

  1119. the curse,

  1120. right where we feel

  1121. it the most,

  1122. others want

  1123. to enter in.

  1124. Missional living

  1125. is reversing

  1126. the curse

  1127. where you feel

  1128. life's

  1129. hardness

  1130. pressing

  1131. most in.

  1132. Let me pray

  1133. that this story

  1134. would become

1135. true of us as well.

  1136. Would you join me?

  1137. Spirit of God,

  1138. at the beginning,

  1139. I ask that you

  1140. would connect the dots.

  1141. Would you?

  1142. Would you move

  1143. the story?

  1144. Would you move

  1145. the conceptual

  1146. things that I

  1147. argued for?

  1148. Not just to

  1149. stay there,

  1150. but would you

  1151. cause them

  1152. to intersect

  1153. where we live?

  1154. Would you help us

  1155. see just the

  1156. relational spheres

  1157. in which we're

  1158. already engaged

  1159. and yet we're

  1160. experiencing

  1161. great need?

  1162. Would you give us

  1163. ridiculous

  1164. spirit-led

  1165. creativity

  1166. to move

  1167. towards those

  1168. simple needs

  1169. in ways that

  1170. reverse the curse

  1171. and take the

  1172. breath away

  1173. of us as we

  1174. do it

  1175. and those

  1176. to whom we

  1177. do it

  1178. so that many

  1179. others

  1180. can be

  1181. invited

  1182. to the party

  1183. where they

  1184. can know

  1185. the restoration

  1186. that's only

  1187. found in the

  1188. gospel story?

  1189. Would you

  1190. continue to

  1191. grow and

  1192. nurture

  1193. Southwood

  1194. Prez

  1195. to be a

  1196. people who

  1197. do life

  1198. missionally?

  1199. Not just

  1200. absorbed in

  1201. themselves,

  1202. but on the

  1203. move.

  1204. Not just

  1205. overwhelmed,

  1206. but diving

  1207. into the

  1208. midst of the

  1209. things that

  1210. overwhelm

  1211. others too,

  1212. so that gospel

  1213. hope might

  1214. dawn and

  1215. shalom might

  1216. be known in

  1217. Huntsville.

  1218. We pray this

  1219. in Jesus,

  1220. King Jesus'

  1221. powerful name.

  1222. Amen.
