  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. Wow. I missed worshiping here.

  4. Can't tell me how many times I've sat in a church in Africa worshiping and been strengthened and encouraged,

  5. remembering worshiping here and remembering that you were here doing the same thing across an ocean.

  6. That song may get me through another year of being over there and remembering that.

  7. So I hope the clerical collar doesn't throw you off too much.

  8. In Africa, I actually work for the Episcopal Church of Sudan in South Sudan,

  9. and this is what we would normally wear when we're over there.

  10. And since I've been back and walking through places like Party City,

  11. I've seen that this actually is sold here as a costume.

  12. So I hope it's not too frightening for you, but I figured with heyday, it kind of serves a dual purpose.

  13. And speaking of heyday, I'm really glad to come back for that, to be here for that kind of fellowship,

  14. that kind of candy.

  15. And also because I assume that since most of you are going, I have until 3 o'clock to preach.

  16. So it'll be just like an African service going all day.

  17. There's been a lot to happen in my life in the last year and a half since I've been over there.

  18. There's a lot to come and tell you about.

  19. A lot to tell you about what God has been doing.

  20. I think I've boiled it down to a little less than three hours, so we'll see.

  21. But for those of you who don't know, back in March in 2014,

  22. I boarded a plane and I headed to Africa.

  23. My plans, since signing up to be a missionary with what was at that time World Harvest and is now called Surge,

  24. were to go and to serve as a pastor in the community of Mundri, South Sudan.

  25. Seemed like a simple plan.

  26. Plans change.

  27. In fact, before I even departed for South Sudan, my plans had changed drastically.

  28. Because in December of 2013, the president of South Sudan, Salva Kir,

  29. accused his former vice president, who he had just fired, Rick Makar, of staging a coup.

  30. Now, whether this happened or not, it did send the country into a civil war.

  31. That is still going on.

  32. South Sudan has been at war for 42 of the last 60 years.

  33. It's kind of something they're used to.

  34. It was not something I was used to.

  35. But since the civil war broke out again,

  36. the team that I had signed up to join also decided to go its different ways

  37. and is now scattered in the States and in Kenya and various other places.

  38. So the team that I wanted to join was no longer on the field,

  39. and the field that I wanted to go to was no longer safe to go to,

  40. and my plans seemed to be falling right and left.

  41. So I came up with a new plan, a lot of them.

  42. And I asked, and they allowed me to go ahead and to move to Nairobi, Kenya,

  43. and to spend some time there waiting for the new team to get ready to come

  44. and waiting for South Sudan to get peaceful enough for me to go in.

  45. And so I joined a team in Nairobi.

  46. I started learning about chronological Bible storytelling

  47. and teaching seminars across Kenya.

  48. I started helping out with the interns

  49. and just really getting adjusted to African life.

  50. It was a great, great experience for those few months,

  51. helping me to ease into life there.

  52. And by the end of July,

  53. they had decided that it was peaceful enough,

  54. safe enough,

  55. for me to go ahead and move into South Sudan.

  56. And so I did.

  57. I went to Mundry to wait on my new team.

  58. I spent several weeks by myself on the compound

  59. waiting for them to come.

  60. And by the end of September,

  61. the whole team was then on the ground,

  62. raring to go,

  63. ready to see the work happen there,

  64. to learn the language,

  65. to get involved with the community,

  66. to start preaching,

  67. start teaching,

  68. start working with everybody there.

  69. And we started to see our plans unfold.

  70. And then we started to see our plans fall apart.

  71. By February,

  72. my team leader and his family

  73. had to be medically evacuated.

  74. And a few weeks later,

  75. the three of us that remained as a team

  76. were evacuated for safety.

  77. As we found out that

  78. new government forces were on their way up to town

  79. and we weren't sure just what they would do,

  80. given their past record of

  81. shooting first and asking questions never.

  82. By the grace of God,

  83. we were evacuated within 24 hours

  84. and back to Kenya,

  85. where we had no idea what we were going to do,

  86. and thankfully God did.

  87. We found work for the three of us

  88. as our team leaders decided to stay in Nairobi

  89. and not go back permanently

  90. for the sake of their family and health.

  91. And the three of us found our way

  92. to a third team for me,

  93. the Kajabi team,

  94. working in the mountains of Kenya,

  95. where it's much colder than South Sudan,

  96. and I did not have any jackets.

  97. We worked teaching at a missionary boarding school there.

  98. And there we were also able to start

  99. making yet another plan

  100. to get back to South Sudan.

  101. And this time we did it in a slightly roundabout way

  102. by going to Uganda first

  103. to look for a permanent backup site,

  104. working with the refugees of our tribal group there,

  105. the Moru tribe.

  106. From there we saw that it was going to be able

  107. to easier get into South Sudan

  108. on some quick trips,

  109. and by the end of August,

  110. just a couple months ago,

  111. we took one of those trips in

  112. to take some relief to the community there

  113. that had been so devastated by the fighting.

  114. And then we came back,

  115. and the three of us,

  116. Will and Teresa and I,

  117. returned to the States in mid-September,

  118. a lot earlier than we expected,

  119. and came home to regroup,

  120. to refresh,

  121. and to recruit,

  122. if anybody's interested in serving overseas

  123. in a war-torn area.

  124. You can talk to me afterwards.

  125. Especially doctors and engineers.

  126. I know there's a few of those here.

  127. So we're back in the States.

  128. And yet again,

  129. going back to the drawing board,

  130. trying to find a plan

  131. for returning

  132. when we go back in January

  133. to Uganda

  134. and to South Sudan

  135. to work.

  136. And the violence

  137. since we've been home

  138. has increased

  139. and gotten worse.

  140. And much of Mundry

  141. is no longer there.

  142. And sometimes words

  143. just don't come.

  144. And plans don't seem

  145. to be forming.

  146. My teammate, Will,

  147. was reflecting on this recently.

  148. When we make plans

  149. as a team,

  150. generally I'm the one

  151. that's sitting in the back

  152. quiet

  153. and has to be coaxed

  154. into giving the opinion

  155. right at the end.

  156. And we kind of make Will speak first.

  157. And since we think so much alike,

  158. I tend to just say ditto

  159. and go with whatever Will says.

  160. And as Will has been back

  161. reflecting on the same things

  162. and thinking about having no words

  163. but trying to figure out plans,

  164. he wrote a blog recently.

  165. And since he tends to

  166. speak for me anyway,

  167. I figured I'd let him do it

  168. this morning.

  169. So I want to share with you

  170. just a little bit

  171. about what he said

  172. that led me to my passage

  173. for today.

  174. Will said,

  175. in the midst of the uncertainty

  176. and instability,

  177. God has been clear

  178. since we've been back

  179. in the USA.

  180. We're continuing

  181. to pursue life

  182. and ministry in Mundry.

  183. This is the place

  184. where I want to tell you

  185. our great plan

  186. and that it will be

  187. to guarantee success.

  188. But I don't have one.

  189. I've realized recently

  190. that God is more concerned

  191. with my obedience

  192. than my success.

  193. I'm not saying

  194. he doesn't want me

  195. to be successful.

  196. I'm saying my willingness

  197. to be obedient

  198. in the midst of uncertainty

  199. and lack of understanding

  200. is far more important

  201. than having a guarantee

  202. of success.

  203. Paul seems to be

  204. a great example of this.

  205. I doubt he ever got on a boat

  206. or entered a new city

  207. thinking,

  208. success will be

  209. this ship wrecking

  210. or success will only happen

  211. after I've been arrested.

  212. All Paul did

  213. was continue to say yes

  214. when God asked him

  215. to do something.

  216. He let God define success

  217. by being open

  218. to the guidance of the Spirit

  219. and looking for opportunities

  220. to sacrificially love others.

  221. This is our aim,

  222. to continue to say yes

  223. when God asks us

  224. to do something

  225. so we've said yes.

  226. Ditto.

  227. We'll wrap it up

  228. so perfectly

  229. of what we've been feeling,

  230. what we've been thinking

  231. in this time

  232. of waiting on the Lord,

  233. making plans

  234. but waiting for him

  235. to direct them

  236. and just being willing

  237. to say yes.

  238. And as Will and I

  239. have been looking

  240. at the Scriptures

  241. for guidance

  242. since we've been back

  243. is Paul really has been

  244. a great help to study.

  245. And that's what led me

  246. to the passage

  247. I want to share with you

  248. this morning.

  249. Because like us,

  250. like Paul,

  251. I would bet

  252. that there's a number

  253. of you who have seen

  254. your plans change

  255. over the past years

  256. and over the extent

  257. of your life

  258. and a number of you

  259. who have been rocked

  260. by uncertainty.

  261. So I want to look

  262. at how Scripture

  263. deals with that.

  264. How Paul made his plans

  265. despite knowing

  266. that God was likely

  267. to change them.

  268. How Paul surrounded

  269. those plans in prayer

  270. and how all of this

  271. led him

  272. and can lead us

  273. to peace.

  274. So if you would

  275. turn with me

  276. to Romans chapter 15.

    Romans 15 chapter mention

  277. Starting in verse 23,

  278. let's see what Paul

  279. has to say

  280. about making plans.

  281. In Romans 15,

  282. Paul says,

  283. but now,

  284. since I no longer

  285. have any room

  286. for work in these regions

  287. and since I've longed

  288. for many years

  289. to come to you,

  290. I hope to see you

  291. in passing

  292. as I go to Spain

  293. and to be helped

  294. on my journey there

  295. by you

  296. once I have enjoyed

  297. your company

  298. for a while.

  299. At present,

  300. however,

  301. I'm going to Jerusalem,

  302. bringing aid

  303. to the saints

  304. from Macedonia

  305. and Achaia

  306. have been pleased

  307. to make some contribution

  308. for the poor

  309. among the saints

  310. in Jerusalem.

  311. For they were pleased

  312. to do it

  313. and indeed

  314. they owe it to them.

  315. For if the Gentiles

  316. have come to share

  317. in the spiritual blessings,

  318. they ought also

  319. to be of service

  320. to them

  321. in material blessings.

  322. When therefore

  323. I have completed this

  324. and have delivered

  325. to them

  326. what has been collected,

  327. I will leave

  328. for Spain

  329. by way of you.

  330. I know that

  331. when I come to you,

  332. I will come

  333. in the fullness

  334. of the blessing

  335. of Christ.

  336. And I appeal

  337. to you,

  338. brothers,

  339. by our Lord

  340. Jesus Christ,

  341. by the love

  342. of the Spirit

  343. to strive together

  344. with me

  345. in your prayers

  346. to God

  347. on my behalf,

  348. that I may be

  349. delivered from

  350. the unbelievers

  351. in Judea,

  352. and that my service

  353. for Jerusalem

  354. may be acceptable

  355. to the saints,

  356. so that by God's will

  357. I may come to you

  358. with joy

  359. and be refreshed

  360. in your company.

  361. May the God

  362. of peace

  363. be with you all.

  364. Amen.

  365. It's the word

  366. of the Lord.

  367. There's so much

  368. in this passage

  369. that has meant

  370. so much to me.

  371. In the first half

  372. of it,

  373. more than just

  374. the first half of it,

  375. we see Paul

  376. making his plans.

  377. For a much more

  378. detailed description

  379. of these plans,

  380. feel free to turn

  381. to the book of Acts

  382. and just read

  383. the whole thing.

  384. There you'll find

  385. all that Paul planned

  386. and all that God

  387. changed in his plans,

  388. which was a whole

  389. lot of it.

  390. So here,

  391. he doesn't get

  392. so much into the details.

  393. He gives just

  394. a bit of a rough

  395. outline to the Romans

  396. talking about

  397. what he hopes to do,

  398. what he's done,

  399. what kind of part

  400. they'll play

  401. in those plans,

  402. and then he asks

  403. for prayer.

  404. He doesn't get

  405. into the details

  406. of the ups and downs

  407. of his journeys

  408. across Macedonia,

  409. of Greece,

  410. and Asia Minor.

  411. He only indicates

  412. that he sees

  413. his work there

  414. as being done.

  415. The seeds

  416. have been planted.

  417. Paul was a church planter.

  418. That job was done.

  419. And he left

  420. the church there

  421. in the capable hands

  422. of others

  423. to tend to it

  424. and to help it grow.

  425. And in fact,

  426. we can actually see

  427. some of that growth

  428. of those churches

  429. that he's planted

  430. right here

  431. as Paul speaks

  432. immediately of his plan

  433. to take aid

  434. to the poor in Jerusalem,

  435. to take relief

  436. that has been given

  437. to him by the churches

  438. that he planted.

  439. The fruits

  440. of their spiritual growth

  441. are manifesting

  442. in the fruits

  443. of their labors

  444. being shared

  445. with this universal church.

  446. Coming home

  447. as a missionary,

  448. it would be really easy

  449. to look at this passage

  450. and take it out of context

  451. and preach it

  452. to my benefit

  453. and talk about

  454. financial support

  455. and caring for the needy

  456. and for those

  457. going on these journeys,

  458. to preach a health

  459. and wealth gospel

  460. and tell you

  461. you'll do really well

  462. if you give all your money

  463. away to a starving missionary

  464. and Africans.

  465. But that's not

  466. what he's saying here.

  467. It's not about

  468. just financial support.

  469. That's not why

  470. he tells the church

  471. in Rome

  472. that he's going

  473. to Jerusalem.

  474. He's not doing it

  475. to guilt them

  476. into saying,

  477. oh, look what

  478. the new churches did.

  479. They gave to the poor.

  480. What about you,

  481. Church of Rome?

  482. You've got to have

  483. a lot of money over there.

  484. Why don't you start giving?

  485. He's not guilt-tripping

  486. the church

  487. and telling them

  488. to give more money.

  489. He's not doing it

  490. just to make himself

  491. look good

  492. and say,

  493. when I come see you,

  494. you better be ready

  495. to celebrate me

  496. because I'm the one

  497. out taking care

  498. of these people.

  499. It's not for his own

  500. celebration.

  501. He's telling the church

  502. of Rome

  503. his plans

  504. to take aid

  505. to the poor

  506. because he needs

  507. their help

  508. on a different level.

  509. Because he wants them

  510. to join him

  511. in this trip

  512. spiritually.

  513. He wants them

  514. to come together.

  515. You know,

  516. Paul uses phrase

  517. like they owe it

  518. to them

  519. and if we were

  520. to preach that

  521. in such a demanding way

  522. without looking

  523. at the love behind it

  524. that compels

  525. this duty

  526. and this obligation,

  527. we would make

  528. idols of our works

  529. and set them up

  530. for our own salvation

  531. instead of Christ.

  532. Paul does stress

  533. a moral obligation here

  534. but if we fail

  535. to emphasize

  536. the love

  537. that compels

  538. this act,

  539. we miss everything.

  540. Paul doesn't leave it

  541. at simple obligation.

  542. He points out

  543. what a spiritual joy

  544. it is for them

  545. to come together

  546. with him.

  547. He asks for them

  548. to pray for him

  549. in this,

  550. to come together

  551. in the struggle

  552. and fight in prayer

  553. and he asks for them

  554. to come together

  555. so that when he is

  556. face to face

  557. they may share

  558. in the joy

  559. of this message,

  560. the joy of hearing

  561. your prayers worked,

  562. God's word

  563. is planted

  564. in the hearts

  565. of many.

  566. God's church

  567. is growing

  568. despite the struggles.

  569. He tells the church

  570. so that they

  571. can share

  572. in the joy of it.

  573. One of the reasons

  574. I've come home

  575. to tell you

  576. about the seeds

  577. that have been planted,

  578. to share

  579. and make that joy

  580. complete.

  581. Paul's work

  582. is not going

  583. to be over

  584. with just one trip.

  585. the church

  586. is going

  587. to continue

  588. to grow

  589. and the church

  590. is going

  591. to continue

  592. to struggle

  593. then just

  594. as it is now.

  595. Paul lived

  596. this way,

  597. lived out

  598. his love

  599. because he saw

  600. it as his obligation,

  601. his duty,

  602. his only way

  603. of living.

  604. Bids me come

  605. and die

  606. and find

  607. that I might

  608. truly live,

  609. we sang.

  610. that's what

  611. Paul is living here.

  612. That's what

  613. he has lived

  614. before the churches

  615. in Greece

  616. and Asia Minor

  617. that are giving

  618. because they

  619. followed Paul's example

  620. even as he follows

  621. the example of Christ

  622. just as Paul told

  623. the Corinthian church

  624. to do.

  625. Paul lived

  626. that example

  627. of love

  628. and wants

  629. the church of Rome

  630. to live that example

  631. of love.

  632. He wants to

  633. eventually go to Spain

  634. so that he can live

  635. that example

  636. of love

  637. so that little

  638. by little

  639. more of this world

  640. can know the love

  641. of Christ

  642. who died

  643. that we might live

  644. that love.

  645. He plans

  646. to live this way

  647. everywhere he goes.

  648. He plans

  649. and he plans

  650. and it'd be easy

  651. to focus on

  652. the contents

  653. of those plans

  654. to not look

  655. underneath

  656. to say

  657. okay well Paul

  658. is a church planter

  659. and then also

  660. takes time

  661. to see to the needs

  662. of the poor

  663. and those sound

  664. like really good things

  665. so let's go back

  666. to our church

  667. and what we should do

  668. is we should start

  669. a Pauline program

  670. and that program

  671. is going to be really good

  672. we'll church plant

  673. and we'll take money

  674. to the poor

  675. and that'll be good

  676. everybody will like us.

  677. If we only focused

  678. on the content

  679. if we only focused

  680. on the programs

  681. and didn't dig

  682. deeper and deeper

  683. into the heart

  684. that was behind Paul

  685. didn't dig

  686. into the love

  687. that compelled him

  688. to live

  689. then we miss

  690. everything in these plans.

  691. See Paul has learned

  692. not only to live

  693. a life of love

  694. but to make those plans

  695. founded completely

  696. on faith.

  697. He lives in a bit

  698. of a paradox.

  699. He lives being certain

  700. and uncertain

  701. about everything

  702. at the same time.

  703. Paul has seen

  704. so many of his plans

  705. change.

  706. He knows

  707. these new ones

  708. are bound to plan

  709. to change as well.

  710. He opens his letter

  711. to the Romans

  712. in chapter 1

  713. talking about

  714. these same things

  715. saying that

  716. he hopes by the will

  717. of God

  718. that he will at last

  719. finally be able to come

  720. and see the church

  721. of Rome.

  722. He's got many friends

  723. there but he's never

  724. been able to see it.

  725. But he says

  726. by God's will

  727. at last.

  728. If you look deeper

  729. at it you see

  730. how he is unsure

  731. that he'll even make it.

  732. When you look at

  733. the prayer later

  734. in our passage

  735. you see how unsure

  736. he is

  737. and he's right

  738. to be unsure

  739. of this.

  740. There are people

  741. in Jerusalem

  742. people across the world

  743. where he's been ministering

  744. that want to kill him

  745. that are out

  746. to take his life.

  747. And if it weren't

  748. just people looking out

  749. to kill him

  750. he's got to travel

  751. all over the world

  752. in not terribly

  753. safe conditions.

  754. He's not sure

  755. that he'll make it

  756. to Jerusalem

  757. let alone

  758. all the way back

  759. to Rome again.

  760. But he plans

  761. on it anyway.

  762. He plans on it

  763. because the foundation

  764. of his plan

  765. is the phrase

  766. thy will be done

  767. Lord.

  768. He's unsure

  769. about what will happen

  770. but he's sure

  771. absolutely sure

  772. that whatever happens

  773. he's got to follow

  774. God in it.

  775. And when he does

  776. God will be there.

  777. What a way

  778. to make a plan.

  779. I can't say

  780. that all the plans

  781. that I've made

  782. in the last two years

  783. have been made this way

  784. but I can definitely

  785. tell you

  786. I have seen

  787. God's will

  788. triumph in all of them.

  789. And that has helped

  790. greatly

  791. in knowing that

  792. whatever is about

  793. to happen

  794. as I try to return

  795. to Africa in January

  796. God's will

  797. will triumph still.

  798. It wasn't my plan

  799. to go to Nairobi.

  800. When they first

  801. recruited me

  802. they told me

  803. about Nairobi

  804. and I kind of

  805. pushed it away

  806. not thinking

  807. I would be really

  808. interested in

  809. chronological Bible

  810. storytelling.

  811. And when I got there

  812. I was amazed

  813. by what a great

  814. tool it is

  815. for preaching

  816. the gospel.

  817. And that method

  818. would go on

  819. to help me greatly

  820. as I took those stories

  821. and had my

  822. my tutor

  823. translate some

  824. into Arabic

  825. so that I could

  826. start ministering

  827. in the community

  828. both in South Sudan

  829. and again with refugees

  830. in Uganda.

  831. And if I hadn't

  832. gone to Kenya

  833. and learned that method

  834. I never would have

  835. been prepared

  836. to preach in that way.

  837. More than just that

  838. I met a team

  839. that surrounded me

  840. with community

  841. and helped me

  842. to adjust to Africa

  843. that loved me

  844. and that would

  845. be there

  846. and be familiar

  847. in loving me

  848. when I had to evacuate

  849. a year later.

  850. I didn't think

  851. I'd ever return

  852. to Kenya

  853. and Nairobi

  854. when I left them.

  855. Certainly didn't plan

  856. to evacuate.

  857. I didn't plan

  858. to go into

  859. South Sudan

  860. and live on the compound

  861. for a little over

  862. a month by myself.

  863. I was excited

  864. that Serge

  865. is so

  866. adamant

  867. about having teams

  868. and community

  869. and loving one another

  870. and building one another up.

  871. And then I

  872. went to the community

  873. by myself.

  874. But being there

  875. by myself

  876. that community

  877. surrounded me

  878. with love

  879. and instantly

  880. came to take care

  881. of me.

  882. I'd have the boys

  883. coming up to the compound

  884. every day

  885. or every other day

  886. not simply to eat

  887. my food

  888. but also just

  889. to check on me

  890. not sure that

  891. this new guy

  892. would even be able

  893. to tie his own shoes

  894. if they didn't

  895. come and help.

  896. And I was brought

  897. into the community

  898. instantly

  899. seeing their love

  900. for me

  901. and building

  902. such a deep love

  903. for them

  904. quickly.

  905. And then my new team

  906. came.

  907. Certainly didn't plan

  908. for my team leaders

  909. to have to be evacuated

  910. for medical reasons

  911. or for the rest

  912. of the three of us

  913. to have to evacuate

  914. at all.

  915. But God had plans

  916. even there.

  917. Had the whole team

  918. been on the ground

  919. when we needed

  920. to evacuate

  921. space on the plane

  922. would have been

  923. a little tough

  924. for getting all of us

  925. out at the same time.

  926. But because our team

  927. leaders went first

  928. they were in Nairobi

  929. able to help us

  930. make plans

  931. when we couldn't.

  932. And the three of us

  933. got out.

  934. Not only that

  935. the three of us

  936. would become

  937. the whole team

  938. and those weeks

  939. together

  940. that evacuation

  941. together

  942. was a great

  943. bonding experience.

  944. A foundational

  945. peace

  946. in what's

  947. building up

  948. our team.

  949. When we came

  950. to Kajabi

  951. we definitely

  952. didn't see ourselves

  953. as coming to Africa

  954. to teach missionaries

  955. kids.

  956. We had no idea

  957. what would happen

  958. since we couldn't

  959. go back in the country

  960. but God did.

  961. It wasn't just

  962. that three jobs

  963. opened up

  964. at Rift Valley Academy

  965. it was that three jobs

  966. perfectly opened up

  967. at the last minute

  968. the week before

  969. the term was supposed

  970. to start

  971. we moved up

  972. to teach

  973. because three teachers

  974. had emergencies

  975. a kindergarten teacher

  976. a PE teacher

  977. and an AP English teacher

  978. and Teresa just happens

  979. to be a primary educator

  980. Will is far better shape

  981. and much more patient

  982. with small kids

  983. to teach PE

  984. to elementary students

  985. and I was an AP English

  986. teacher in the states.

  987. How could we deny

  988. that God's hand

  989. was in preparing

  990. for us

  991. even in Kajabi?

  992. More than that

  993. Kajabi was the home

  994. to our area director

  995. and to former teammates

  996. from South Sudan

  997. who would be able

  998. to come and see us

  999. face to face

1000. to help us get through this

  1001. and to make plans

  1002. for our next steps.

  1003. Plans that haven't

  1004. exactly worked out

  1005. but they were there.

1006. When we went to Uganda

  1007. we never expected

1008. to meet a missionary community

1009. that would take us in

  1010. provide us a home

  1011. provide us a way

  1012. into Moondry

  1013. that was safer

  1014. and faster.

  1015. I never planned

  1016. to come home

  1017. this early

  1018. but God knew

1019. that the three of us

  1020. would need

  1021. to come home

  1022. and be refreshed

1023. after this year and a half.

  1024. That we would need

  1025. the body of Christ

  1026. again around us

  1027. in a familiar place

  1028. to love us

  1029. to strengthen us

1030. so that we could go back

  1031. and do it again.

  1032. So here I am

  1033. back in the States

  1034. back making plans again

  1035. waiting on the Lord

  1036. to direct them.

  1037. We tend

  1038. to want to wait

  1039. on the Lord

  1040. and think that

  1041. that phrase means

1042. that we should be inactive

  1043. that we get frustrated

  1044. seeing so many

  1045. of our plans fail

1046. and we start to think

  1047. that

1048. I'll just wait on Him

1049. He'll do all the work

  1050. I'll just sit back

  1051. and wait.

  1052. Being stagnant

  1053. is not waiting.

  1054. Stagnant waters

  1055. breed disease

  1056. they breed death.

  1057. We need living

  1058. moving waters.

  1059. We want instead

  1060. to learn

1061. as Paul has learned here

  1062. to be actively

  1063. waiting on the Lord.

  1064. Well think about it

  1065. this way

1066. and for those of you

  1067. who know me

  1068. way too well

  1069. try not to laugh

  1070. too much

  1071. at this illustration.

  1072. Think about a guy

1073. who's finally got the nerve

1074. up to ask a girl

  1075. on a date

  1076. and she says yes.

  1077. What if he prepared

  1078. for that date

  1079. the whole week

1080. by sitting on his couch

  1081. and being stagnant?

  1082. He just says

  1083. alright she said yes

  1084. good I'll go home

1085. and wait for the day

  1086. to come

1087. and he sits on his couch

  1088. he dreams of all

  1089. the great things

  1090. that could happen

  1091. on the date

  1092. he worries over

  1093. every bad thing

  1094. that could happen

  1095. on the date

  1096. but he doesn't

  1097. actually get ready

  1098. he does nothing

  1099. but sit there.

  1100. Doesn't even take

  1101. a shower

  1102. and get dressed up

1103. or ready for the date

  1104. or make any plans

  1105. just knows

  1106. the date's coming

  1107. so something

  1108. will happen

  1109. that day.

  1110. I'd imagine

  1111. that date

  1112. doesn't go very well

1113. and doesn't go very long

  1114. especially after

1115. she starts to smell him.

  1116. But what if instead

  1117. he was active

  1118. in his waiting?

1119. What if she said yes

1120. and for that whole week

  1121. leading up to it

  1122. he used that joy

  1123. to actively wake

  1124. to make plans?

  1125. He started thinking about

  1126. well what would her

  1127. favorite activity be

  1128. or what would her

  1129. favorite music be

  1130. and he decides to

  1131. set up a picnic

  1132. in the park

  1133. or decides to

  1134. find dinner

  1135. and a concert

  1136. at her favorite music.

  1137. There's no thing

  1138. he can do

  1139. no one thing

  1140. that makes that day

  1141. come any faster.

  1142. There's no one thing

  1143. he can do

  1144. that will ensure

1145. that all of his plans

  1146. actually work.

  1147. Sometimes things

  1148. just go wrong.

  1149. But when he gets

  1150. to that day

1151. and when they go out

  1152. on that picnic

  1153. if it rains

  1154. so what?

  1155. And if he forgets

1156. the tickets to the concert

  1157. and they end up

  1158. taking a walk

  1159. in the park instead

  1160. and talking all night

  1161. so what?

  1162. She can see

  1163. that these plans

  1164. were made

  1165. that he prepared

  1166. himself

1167. out of that puppy dog love

  1168. he got ready

  1169. because that was

  1170. what he was looking

  1171. forward to.

  1172. It drove him

1173. to wait on that day.

  1174. How much more

  1175. does God look down

  1176. on us with joy

  1177. as we're making

  1178. these plans

  1179. when we say

  1180. Lord my plan

  1181. is to serve you

  1182. now here's how

1183. I'm going to do it

  1184. and he stops listening

  1185. after the

1186. Lord I'm going to serve you

  1187. and kicks in

  1188. with his own plans

  1189. but what joy

  1190. he takes.

  1191. It's like the father

  1192. whose son

  1193. at five

  1194. wants to come in

  1195. and sees his dad

  1196. shaving

1197. and wants to come in

  1198. and imitate his father

  1199. so the father

  1200. and son stand

  1201. side by side

  1202. in front of the

  1203. bathroom mirror

  1204. and the son

  1205. gets all

  1206. lathered up

  1207. dad gives him

  1208. the little

  1209. bladeless razor

  1210. and they slowly

  1211. mimic each other's moves

  1212. and his dad

  1213. slowly scrapes

  1214. down one side

  1215. his son scrapes

  1216. knocks off

  1217. the shaving cream

  1218. and it's not really

  1219. doing any good

  1220. his son doesn't

  1221. need to shave

  1222. but he wants

1223. to be like his dad

  1224. and doing it

  1225. showing him

  1226. how to be

  1227. like his father

  1228. is helping him

  1229. to grow up

  1230. that way

  1231. it's helping

  1232. in the long run

  1233. whether he can

  1234. see it now

  1235. or not

  1236. what delight

  1237. our father

  1238. takes in us

  1239. as he looks

  1240. down at his child

  1241. and says

  1242. that's my boy

  1243. imitate me

  1244. follow my example

  1245. our plans

  1246. don't have

  1247. to work out

  1248. because his do

  1249. and because he

  1250. takes great delight

  1251. in the love

  1252. that drives us

  1253. to make those plans

  1254. and to serve him

  1255. no matter what

  1256. happens

  1257. it's that kind

  1258. of love

  1259. that imitating

  1260. life

  1261. that Paul

  1262. wants for himself

  1263. and that Paul

  1264. wants the church

  1265. to act out

  1266. here in Rome

  1267. and everywhere he goes

  1268. to act out

  1269. a life of love

  1270. to have faith

  1271. enough to realize

  1272. that we may

  1273. plan our course

  1274. but the Lord

  1275. determines our steps

  1276. and that's really good

  1277. to that end

  1278. Paul doesn't

  1279. just make plans

  1280. he makes sure

  1281. that they're

  1282. bathed in prayer

  1283. Paul knows

  1284. that his path

  1285. is difficult

  1286. instead of living

  1287. in fear

  1288. he fights

  1289. in faith

  1290. look at verse 30

  1291. he appeals

  1292. to the church

  1293. in Rome

  1294. to pray for him

  1295. he says

  1296. strive with me

  1297. struggle

  1298. wrestle with me

  1299. fight with me

  1300. in prayer

  1301. this prayer

  1302. he's living

  1303. it's not your standard

  1304. southern blessing

  1305. of a meal

  1306. of good bread

  1307. good meat

  1308. good God

  1309. let's eat

  1310. this is

  1311. this is a prayer

  1312. of a passionate

  1313. heart-wrenching

  1314. broken man

  1315. going down

  1316. a broken road

  1317. knowing the detours

  1318. and the pitfalls

  1319. are well worth

  1320. the home

  1321. with his savior

1322. that lies at the end

  1323. so he beseeches

  1324. the church

  1325. to fight

  1326. with them

  1327. in prayer

  1328. he knows

  1329. that his life

  1330. is under threat

  1331. that there are

  1332. those

  1333. where he has been

  1334. and preached

1335. that want to kill him

1336. for what he has preached

  1337. and he prays

  1338. that his work

  1339. be made acceptable

  1340. to the saints there

  1341. he's not trying

  1342. to please the saints

  1343. with acceptable works

  1344. he's trying

  1345. to see that life

  1346. of love

  1347. break down the wall

  1348. between the Jews

  1349. in Jerusalem

  1350. and the Gentiles

  1351. sending them support

  1352. he's trying

  1353. to make sure

  1354. that pray

  1355. that when these Gentiles

  1356. who have now learned

  1357. the gospel

  1358. send their love

  1359. to this church

  1360. that this church

  1361. responds and says

  1362. they really are part

1363. of the body of Christ

  1364. and that love

  1365. in those gifts

  1366. breaks down the walls

  1367. that are keeping

  1368. the church apart

  1369. between Jew and Gentile

  1370. he wants the church

  1371. in Jerusalem

  1372. not only to have

1373. their needs taken care of

1374. but to have their hearts

  1375. realize

1376. that the body of Christ

  1377. is a beautiful thing

  1378. strikes me the most

  1379. though

  1380. is perhaps that

  1381. his greatest desire

  1382. in this

  1383. is that

  1384. the church

  1385. share in his joy

  1386. and be refreshed

  1387. by one another

  1388. missions is a huge

  1389. part of this

  1390. but it's not just

  1391. missions

  1392. it's fellowship

  1393. that he wants

  1394. to focus on

  1395. he focuses on

  1396. mutually encouraging

  1397. each other

  1398. as iron sharpens iron

  1399. so one man

  1400. builds another up

  1401. but it's not just

  1402. about preparing

  1403. for the fight

  1404. it's softening

  1405. the blows

  1406. in the fight

  1407. it's taking care

  1408. and binding up

  1409. the wounds

  1410. after the fight

  1411. it's standing together

  1412. as one body

  1413. Paul plans

  1414. he prays

1415. he does all of this

  1416. so that joy

  1417. may be complete

1418. that joy of the Lord

  1419. be his strength

1420. and he does it all

  1421. by the

  1422. God's will

  1423. saying that

1424. would be a scary thought

  1425. for all of us

  1426. if we didn't know

  1427. who God was

1428. the one who loves us

  1429. beyond measure

  1430. who gave his son

  1431. up for us

  1432. that by his grace

  1433. we might be refreshed

  1434. and see peace

  1435. that passes

  1436. all understanding

  1437. and that's what

1438. all of this leads to

  1439. a life of peace

  1440. at heart

  1441. looking at this

  1442. and finding that peace

  1443. one commentator

  1444. stood out to me

  1445. this week

  1446. as I was studying

1447. that I want to bring

  1448. to you

  1449. he says

  1450. grace brings peace

  1451. the latter is both

  1452. a state

  1453. that of reconciliation

  1454. with God

  1455. and a condition

  1456. the inner conviction

  1457. that consequently

  1458. all is well

  1459. it's the great blessing

  1460. which Christ

  1461. by his atoning sacrifice

  1462. bestowed upon the church

  1463. it surpasses

  1464. all understanding

  1465. it's not the reflection

  1466. of an unclouded sky

  1467. and tranquil waters

  1468. of a picturesque lake

  1469. rather it's the cleft

  1470. of the rock

  1471. in which the Lord

  1472. hides his children

1473. when the storm is raging

  1474. it's the hiding place

  1475. under the wings

  1476. to which the hen

  1477. gathers her broods

  1478. that the little chicks

  1479. are safe

  1480. while the storm

  1481. bursts loose

  1482. in all its fury

  1483. upon herself

  1484. we're reconciled

  1485. to God

  1486. we're at peace

  1487. with him

  1488. have you ever been

  1489. in a pickup game

  1490. of soccer

  1491. and your team

  1492. is doing so miserably

  1493. poor

  1494. and you have nothing

  1495. added

  1496. and the other team

  1497. is just trouncing you

1498. and all of a sudden

  1499. they decide to

  1500. stop and be merciful

1501. and switch one player out

1502. and all of a sudden

  1503. you end up

  1504. on the winning team

  1505. despite having

  1506. done nothing

  1507. God's reconciling

  1508. us to him

  1509. after being at war

  1510. with him

  1511. and broken by sin

  1512. is even greater

  1513. nothing of our own

1514. and yet he trades places

  1515. and puts us

  1516. on the winning side

  1517. he makes us

  1518. at peace with him

  1519. and being at peace

  1520. with him

  1521. gives us a peace

  1522. within

  1523. it's such a rich word

  1524. to Paul

  1525. and to the Romans

  1526. and to the church

  1527. itself

  1528. the very greeting

  1529. of the Jews

  1530. at the day

  1531. peace be with you

1532. and it's because of it

  1533. that we're able

  1534. to come before him

  1535. to live for him

  1536. I pray for peace

  1537. in Moondry

  1538. every day

  1539. I pray for peace

  1540. of my own heart

  1541. especially on those days

  1542. when I get angry

  1543. at the evils

1544. that are being done there

  1545. and yet

  1546. things are getting worse

  1547. Moondry's in ashes

  1548. burned to the ground

  1549. my friends have fled

1550. so how can I say

  1551. that I'm at peace

  1552. I can't every day

  1553. am I nothing more

  1554. than the duck

  1555. on water

  1556. who looks calm

  1557. at top

  1558. but is kicking

  1559. furiously underneath

  1560. or truly

  1561. what does it take

1562. to be able to say

  1563. whatever my lot

  1564. God has taught me

  1565. to say

  1566. it is well

  1567. it is well

  1568. with my soul

  1569. it's my friends

  1570. in Moondry

  1571. who have really

  1572. taught that to me

  1573. because every time

  1574. I call them

  1575. despite how bad

  1576. things are

  1577. they tell me

  1578. two things

  1579. first they say

  1580. don't stop praying

  1581. for us

  1582. and second

  1583. they say

  1584. God

  1585. is greater

  1586. and because

  1587. they know

  1588. who he is

  1589. they have a peace

  1590. within

  1591. despite

  1592. never having

  1593. peace without

  1594. and we can have

  1595. that too

  1596. if we know

  1597. who he is

  1598. and stand

  1599. together for it

  1600. I don't

  1601. know what

  1602. your story is

  1603. for the last

  1604. two years

  1605. or for your lives

  1606. I don't know

  1607. what plans

  1608. you've had

  1609. that have changed

  1610. I do know

  1611. that you have

  1612. a God

  1613. who is there

  1614. for you

  1615. no matter what

  1616. I know

  1617. that all

  1618. those friends

  1619. who have been

  1620. spread across

  1621. the world

  1622. and spread

  1623. across South Sudan

  1624. and scattered

  1625. like seeds

  1626. are still

  1627. in the hands

  1628. of the one

  1629. who can cause

  1630. them to grow

  1631. wherever they are

  1632. whether they're

  1633. in an IDP camp

  1634. or a refugee

  1635. settlement

  1636. God will spread

  1637. the gospel

  1638. even in this

  1639. that he will

  1640. cause it to grow

  1641. if we are willing

  1642. to say yes

  1643. to serve

  1644. yes to pray

  1645. for one another

  1646. to build one another

  1647. up

  1648. and to trust

  1649. in him

  1650. and be at peace

  1651. so let me

  1652. reassure you

  1653. by joining

  1654. my voice

  1655. to Paul

  1656. because a lot

  1657. of these stories

  1658. from South Sudan

  1659. can be pretty heavy

  1660. if you don't

  1661. remember

  1662. the joy

  1663. of the Lord

  1664. being the one

  1665. controlling them all

  1666. I've come home

  1667. that we might

  1668. be mutually

  1669. encouraged

  1670. be refreshed

  1671. by the fellowship

  1672. of this body

  1673. and the joy

  1674. of his spirit

  1675. dwelling in you

  1676. and me

  1677. crying out

  1678. to rejoice

  1679. and be glad

  1680. knowing that he

  1681. is a good God

1682. that he will guide you

  1683. in the path

  1684. of righteousness

  1685. for his name's sake

  1686. so may the God

  1687. of peace

  1688. be with you all

  1689. amen

  1690. will you pray

  1691. with me

  1692. Father almighty

  1693. what a great gift

  1694. it is to know

  1695. that you are

  1696. a good God

  1697. that you are

  1698. a father

  1699. who cares

  1700. about his child

  1701. that lets us

  1702. come to you

  1703. and in your name

  1704. ask whatever

  1705. in it be given

  1706. we ask

  1707. that Lord

  1708. you bring peace

  1709. to Moondry

  1710. that you bring

  1711. peace to our hearts

  1712. that you help us

  1713. to remember

  1714. that you are

  1715. a good God

  1716. to live by faith

  1717. and to live

  1718. your love

  1719. that this world

  1720. might know you

  1721. and not ourselves

  1722. that they may know

  1723. your son

  1724. and he be glorified

1725. we ask in your son's

  1726. precious name

  1727. amen
