  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. Turn with me, if you will, this morning to Revelation chapter 2. That's right, you heard me.

    Revelation 2 chapter mention

  4. Not Ephesians. Revelation chapter 2. We'll talk about Ephesians some too.

    Revelation 2 chapter mention

  5. It's really good to be back this morning.

  6. We actually finished our walk through Ephesians a couple of weeks ago.

  7. But I think since we've spent much of this calendar year in the book of Ephesians together,

  8. that it's well worth a look back for a couple of weeks at what God has taught us,

  9. at what He has shown us there, at what He's had for us as a church.

  10. So we're going to do that this week and next week, call it Ephesians in Review.

  11. Particularly next week, we're going to look back at the highlights of Ephesians.

  12. Some of the great things in that letter itself.

  13. But to help us prepare for that, I want us to look this morning at another letter to the same church.

  14. We've been studying Ephesians years after that letter from Paul to the church in Ephesus.

  15. John records a letter from the risen Jesus to the church in Ephesus.

  16. It's in Revelation 2 at verse 1.

  17. These are the very words of God.

  18. Let's give them our attention and our reverence.

  19. Revelation 2 at verse 1.

  20. To the angel of the church in Ephesus write,

  21. the words of Him who holds the seven stars in His right hand,

  22. who walks among the seven golden lampstands.

  23. I know your works, your toil, and your patient endurance,

  24. and how you cannot bear with those who are evil,

  25. but have tested those who call themselves apostles and are not,

  26. and found them to be false.

  27. I know you are enduring patiently and bearing up for my name's sake,

  28. and you have not grown weary.

  29. But I have this against you,

  30. that you have abandoned the love you had at first.

  31. Remember, therefore, from where you have fallen,

  32. repent and do the works you did at first.

  33. If not, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place unless you repent.

  34. Yet this you have,

  35. you hate the works of the Nicolaitans,

  36. which I also hate.

  37. He who has an ear,

  38. let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

  39. To the one who conquers,

  40. I will grant to eat of the tree of life,

  41. which is in the paradise of God.

  42. The grass withers,

  43. the flowers fade,

  44. but these words of our God

  45. will stand forever.

  46. Pray with me.

  47. Father, we ask for your help.

  48. We ask because these are your words.

  49. We ask because we are those who see,

  50. but don't understand sometimes.

  51. We're those who understand,

  52. but don't desire to change.

  53. We're slow to see the weakness in our own hearts.

  54. We're slow to know you more.

  55. And so,

  56. would you show us ourselves?

  57. Would you show us Jesus?

  58. Would you make us different because of that?

  59. We ask in his name.

  60. Amen.

  61. As we have studied Ephesians together,

  62. one of the key points that Paul has been at pains to make in that epistle

  63. is that we must keep our truth

  64. and our doctrine,

  65. our doctrine,

  66. excuse me,

  67. and our practice connected.

  68. The truth that we believe

  69. and the way that we live,

  70. they have to be connected to each other.

  71. How we believe

  72. impacts how we behave

  73. in every aspect of life.

  74. That's what Paul does in Ephesians, right?

  75. He spends the first three chapters

  76. telling us these glorious truths

  77. of the gospel of God's grace.

  78. He tells us what he's done for us

  79. and he spends all this time

  80. teaching us these things

  81. and then in the last three chapters,

  82. he says,

  83. now I'm gonna tell you what that means

  84. in every area of life.

  85. I'm gonna tell you how it changes

  86. the way you live here

  87. and here and here,

  88. the difference that it makes.

  89. And next week,

  90. I'm so excited to get to look back

  91. at some of those great truths,

  92. some of those challenging applications

  93. and specifically remember

  94. those from Ephesians.

  95. But as we prepare to look back,

  96. this letter here in Revelation

  97. to the church in Ephesus

  98. is a reminder

  99. of how vital it is

  100. for the church to connect

  101. truth and life together.

  102. And how easy it is

  103. in any church,

  104. not just the church in Ephesus,

  105. for truth and life

  106. to get disconnected,

  107. to be torn apart

  108. and how devastating that can be.

  109. To help us understand

  110. what's going on in this letter,

  111. let me tell you a little bit

  112. about myself

  113. that some of you may know.

  114. I really like being right.

  115. I always have.

  116. I grew up in a family

  117. that played a lot of games,

  118. a lot of sports.

  119. We were very competitive.

  120. I'm the firstborn in that family

  121. and as the firstborn,

  122. it's very important

  123. that you always be winning

  124. and that you always be right.

  125. And so from an early age,

  126. that was very important.

  127. So what you do

  128. is you learn all the rules

  129. to the games

  130. and to the sports

  131. and for two very important reasons.

  132. One is it's a great way

  133. to get ahead

  134. if you know all the rules, right?

  135. You can use them

  136. to your advantage.

  137. But what you can also do,

  138. and I learned this early,

  139. that one of the great joys

  140. of sports

  141. is getting to yell

  142. at the umpire

  143. or referee

  144. who missed it.

  145. And that's really

  146. a great joy.

  147. So if you know the rules

  148. better than he does,

  149. you get to yell at him

  150. and tell him

  151. what he should have done,

  152. how he's gotten it wrong.

  153. I went to college

  154. and I became a copy editor

  155. for a newspaper.

  156. And so when you're

  157. a copy editor,

  158. you really need

  159. to know what's right.

  160. You need to know

  161. exactly where every comma

  162. is supposed to be

  163. and not supposed to be.

  164. So you learn all the rules

  165. for comma placement.

  166. It's very significant.

  167. It's like being

  168. an engineer with words

  169. if you've never done it before.

  170. So I'm suspecting

  171. there are others

  172. in this room

  173. who like to have things

  174. just right.

  175. Anybody like things

  176. like just so,

  177. just the way

  178. they're supposed to be?

  179. Some of y'all,

  180. that stresses you out.

  181. I understand.

  182. But some of us

  183. like it just right.

  184. In order to humble

  185. a guy like me

  186. who always wants

  187. to be right,

  188. God has given me

  189. a wife who is right

  190. way more than I am.

  191. Christy is smarter

  192. than I am,

  193. so she's right

  194. about lots of stuff.

  195. But she's also

  196. more intuitive than I am,

  197. so she sees a situation

  198. and she understands

  199. what's going on

  200. and what's going

  201. to happen next

  202. and so she's always

  203. right about that

  204. and it's these rare moments

  205. where I'm right

  206. and she misses it.

  207. God uses that.

  208. He knew I needed that.

  209. But of all the things

  210. I love to be right about,

  211. I think theology

  212. tops the list.

  213. I mean,

  214. is that a fair thing

  215. to be at the top

  216. of the list?

  217. I mean,

  218. many of you

  219. don't care at all

  220. about the rules of sports

  221. or the placement of commas.

  222. It just doesn't matter

  223. to you.

  224. But I mean,

  225. our doctrine

  226. is vitally important,

  227. right?

  228. What we believe

  229. about God,

  230. our theology,

  231. I mean,

  232. we better get that right.

  233. We find out

  234. in this passage

  235. that it is indeed

  236. a really big deal.

  237. God is the God of truth.

  238. Satan is the father

  239. of lies.

  240. So distinguishing

  241. between truth

  242. and falsehood

  243. is of great importance.

  244. We might even say

  245. above all else.

  246. It's why Paul taught

  247. the riches

  248. of the gospel

  249. of grace

  250. over and over

  251. to the Ephesians

  252. in person

  253. and then he wrote

  254. them a letter

  255. about it.

  256. It was the mystery

  257. he was tasked

  258. with telling them,

  259. right?

  260. It's what Jesus

  261. commends the church

  262. for in this letter

  263. in Revelation.

  264. Look at verse 2.

  265. What does Jesus

  266. say to them?

  267. I know your works,

  268. your toil

  269. and your patient endurance,

  270. how you cannot bear

  271. with those who are evil

  272. but have tested

  273. those who call themselves

  274. apostles and are not

  275. and you found them

  276. to be false.

  277. I know you're enduring

  278. patiently and bearing up

  279. for my name's sake

  280. and you've not grown weary.

  281. You're finding the truth

  282. and you're rooting out

  283. the falsehood.

  284. On top of that,

  285. you've found specific

  286. false teachers.

  287. The Nicolaitans,

  288. you hate their works

  289. and I do too.

  290. You've honed in

  291. on the truth.

  292. Jesus praises them

  293. for holding fast

  294. to the truth

  295. they've been taught.

  296. We don't know

  297. all the particulars

  298. of the false teachers

  299. in the beginning

  300. or the Nicolaitans

  301. in verse 6.

  302. We don't know everything

  303. it was that they taught

  304. but the Ephesians

  305. have carefully tested

  306. these teachers.

  307. They've heard

  308. what they've said

  309. and they've found falsehood

  310. and they've zealously

  311. weeded out

  312. those who were misleading them

  313. even to the point

  314. that they hate

  315. some of the teachings

  316. and God says,

  317. I do too.

  318. Listen,

  319. we must never

  320. compromise

  321. on God's truth,

  322. right?

  323. God has entrusted

  324. the truths

  325. of the gospel

  326. to us

  327. so that we will

  328. treasure them

  329. so that we will

  330. know Him

  331. and that by knowing

  332. the truth

  333. we'll be able

  334. to sniff out

  335. counterfeits.

  336. Call them what they are.

  337. You know,

  338. when there are millions

  339. of wrong ways

  340. to do something

  341. the best way

  342. to recognize them

  343. is to know

  344. the right way,

  345. isn't it?

  346. You don't have

  347. to memorize

  348. every wrong way

  349. to spell a word,

  350. do you?

  351. What do you memorize?

  352. You memorize

  353. the right way

  354. to spell it

  355. and all of the wrong ways,

  356. all the mistakes

  357. you could make

  358. become easily

  359. identifiable

  360. as wrong.

  361. It's why when we turn

  362. back to the start

  363. of Ephesians next week

  364. we'll find Paul

  365. insisting on reminding us

  366. over and over

  367. of the great truth

  368. of God's grace

  369. to us in Jesus Christ,

  370. the basis

  371. of our hope

  372. because he's going

  373. to say it's vital

  374. that the church

  375. never get distracted

  376. from that,

  377. never get tossed

  378. about or led astray

  379. as Ephesians says

  380. by every wind

  381. of doctrine.

  382. He wants our anchor

  383. to hold firmly

  384. in Christ, right?

  385. And so Jesus says here,

  386. these are the words

  387. of Jesus to the church,

  388. he says,

  389. well done Ephesians,

  390. good job,

  391. you've been right,

  392. you've sorted out

  393. the false

  394. and the evil

  395. without wearying

  396. in your work,

  397. you've rejected

  398. the wrong

  399. in favor of the right,

  400. keep up the good work,

  401. well done.

  402. But then things turn,

  403. don't they?

  404. This is where those of you

  405. who are like me,

  406. who love to be right,

  407. start not liking

  408. this sermon so much.

  409. And I want you to know

  410. I didn't know

  411. what was going here

  412. when I started

  413. studying this letter.

  414. I didn't know

  415. it was headed

  416. this direction

  417. and all I can say to you

  418. is I don't enjoy it

  419. any more than you do.

  420. That's really encouraging,

  421. right?

  422. That's what you wanted to know.

  423. Listen,

  424. I know you don't like

  425. the sermon,

  426. I don't like it either.

  427. That's all I got

  428. for you right now.

  429. Don't you just love

  430. being around people

  431. who are always right

  432. and know it

  433. and love it?

  434. Yeah,

  435. people who love

  436. being right.

  437. You don't?

  438. You mean,

  439. you mean they're known

  440. for being insufferable

  441. to be around?

  442. You mean they're known

  443. for critiquing

  444. everybody else

  445. for always telling you

  446. how you're doing it wrong?

  447. For making umpires

  448. and refs feel like dirt?

  449. For making friends

  450. and co-workers

  451. feel incompetent

  452. and worthless?

  453. You mean you don't need

  454. someone to spell check

  455. your grocery list?

  456. I always thought

  457. that was going to be

  458. so helpful.

  459. See,

  460. the Bible says

  461. that truth,

  462. that knowing

  463. and believing

  464. the truth of the gospel

  465. should lead to love.

  466. It should lead

  467. to love for God,

  468. love for neighbors,

  469. he says,

  470. even love for enemies,

  471. especially love

  472. for each other

  473. in the body of Christ.

  474. Those things

  475. should be connected

  476. to each other,

  477. but oftentimes

  478. we fail to make

  479. that connection.

  480. We are right,

  481. but we're unloving.

  482. So right,

  483. I would say,

  484. that we're wrong.

  485. Look at what Jesus

  486. has to say

  487. to the Ephesian church

  488. that he's just commended

  489. for being right.

  490. He says,

  491. but I have this against you

  492. that you have abandoned

  493. the love you had at first.

  494. Remember, therefore,

  495. from where you have fallen.

  496. Repent and do the works

  497. you did at first.

  498. If not,

  499. I will come to you

  500. and remove your lampstand

  501. from its place

  502. unless you repent.

  503. He said,

  504. you stopped loving.

  505. You have abandoned

  506. the love you had at first.

  507. Ouch.

  508. You quit loving.

  509. You missed the big one.

  510. Certainly loving Christ,

  511. loving those outside the church

  512. would be included

  513. in this love

  514. that they've stopped,

  515. but particularly here,

  516. what seems to be in mind

  517. in this letter

  518. is love for each other

  519. within the church.

  520. You can see that a little bit

  521. from the context.

  522. It's not just a feeling of love

  523. that we would love God

  524. or something like that,

  525. but the response

  526. is to be repent

  527. and do the works

  528. you did at first.

  529. This is active loving.

  530. This is demonstrating love,

  531. showing love to others.

  532. And we know well

  533. from the book of Ephesians

  534. what is the love

  535. that Paul talks about

  536. to them regularly.

  537. It's that bond of unity

  538. that they have in Christ,

  539. isn't it?

  540. The love they're supposed

  541. to have for each other

  542. that he commends them for

  543. and now he's saying,

  544. you've lost that.

  545. You've abandoned that love.

  546. And it's not a light thing.

  547. It's not just a little mistake,

  548. they took a wrong turn.

  549. How serious is it?

  550. Jesus says,

  551. if you don't repent

  552. and do the works

  553. you did at first,

  554. I'll come and remove

  555. your lampstand

  556. from its place.

  557. That means you won't be a church.

  558. Yikes.

  559. Rightness without love

  560. is sub-Christian.

  561. Listen,

  562. it's true that truth matters.

  563. A lot.

  564. Love without truth

  565. is at best

  566. mere sentimentality.

  567. At worst,

  568. it's false hope.

  569. But what this passage

  570. is highlighting

  571. and what we often miss,

  572. what we in our circles

  573. with a Presbyterian heritage,

  574. a Reformed heritage,

  575. are much more prone to miss,

  576. is that truth without love

  577. is at best

  578. mere moralism.

  579. And at worst,

  580. it's false teaching altogether.

  581. That's what Jesus is saying.

  582. It's less than Christian.

  583. Jesus says,

  584. I'll take the lampstand away.

  585. Francis Schaeffer once said,

  586. I've said this recently,

  587. biblical orthodoxy

  588. without compassion

  589. is surely the ugliest thing

  590. in the world.

  591. And Jesus says here,

  592. you got your truth right,

  593. but you lost love,

  594. and so you're in danger

  595. of losing Christianity

  596. altogether.

  597. You got truth right,

  598. but you lost love,

  599. and you're losing everything.

  600. Reminds me of Jesus' warning

  601. in Matthew 24

  602. about these last days

  603. that we live in.

  604. What he says is that

  605. many false prophets

  606. will arise

  607. and lead many astray.

  608. They didn't get the Ephesians,

  609. did they?

  610. No, they found

  611. the false prophets.

  612. What else is going to happen?

  613. Because lawlessness

  614. will be increased,

  615. the love of many

  616. will grow cold.

  617. They passed the first part

  618. of the test

  619. with flying colors,

  620. but part two,

  621. they failed.

  622. Reminds me of

  623. 1 Corinthians 13,

  624. what Paul wrote

  625. about love there.

  626. If I speak in the tongues

  627. of men and of angels,

  628. but have not love,

  629. I'm a noisy gong

  630. or a clanging cymbal.

  631. If I have prophetic powers

  632. and understand all mysteries

  633. and all knowledge

  634. and have faith

  635. so as to remove mountains,

  636. but have not love,

  637. I'm nothing.

  638. If I give away all I have

  639. and deliver up my body

  640. to be burned,

  641. but have not love,

  642. I gain nothing.

  643. You can know

  644. a lot of right things,

  645. but if you don't connect it

  646. to loving,

  647. you've gained nothing.

  648. In fact,

  649. if you don't connect

  650. your right theology

  651. to loving,

  652. you'll probably start thinking

  653. how much righter

  654. you are than others.

  655. You'll know lots

  656. of right things

  657. and without love,

  658. you'll just become

  659. more and more right.

  660. And that happens a lot.

  661. Sadly,

  662. the Ephesian church

  663. is not the only church

  664. that's happened to.

  665. They're not the first ones

  666. and they won't be the last ones

  667. to struggle with it.

  668. In the history

  669. of the Christian church

  670. in America,

  671. Presbyterians included

  672. some of our best,

  673. richest,

  674. deepest theologians,

  675. people we still read

  676. and learn from

  677. had great truth,

  678. but they were blind

  679. to their own racism,

  680. their hatred.

  681. They failed to love

  682. those who were different

  683. from them

  684. to our great shame.

  685. They disconnected

  686. right theology

  687. from that arena of life.

  688. And we're just beginning

  689. to get our hands

  690. around the gravity

  691. of this sin as a church,

  692. as a denomination,

  693. and see our deep need

  694. to repent.

  695. Because where there was

  696. a lot of truth,

  697. there was a lack

  698. of love.

  699. You might ask,

  700. how does something

  701. like that happen?

  702. I mean, really,

  703. guys who love Jesus

  704. so much,

  705. who know God

  706. so well,

  707. how do you make

  708. such seemingly

  709. obvious mistakes?

  710. We might think,

  711. how could you ever

  712. miss that one?

  713. How do the Ephesians

  714. fight for truth

  715. so well

  716. and love each other

  717. so poorly?

  718. I don't know all

  719. of what developed

  720. in Ephesus,

  721. but at least a couple

  722. things I've seen

  723. in my own heart

  724. and life

  725. and in Christ's church

  726. that fit

  727. with this letter.

  728. I think we get

  729. so focused

  730. on being right

  731. that we can become

  732. obsessed

  733. with what we're against

  734. rather than

  735. what we're for.

  736. And so,

  737. differences of any type

  738. become grounds

  739. for critique

  740. and conflict

  741. rather than

  742. cause for celebration.

  743. instead of focusing

  744. on truth

  745. and deepening

  746. our understanding

  747. of God

  748. and who He is

  749. and knowing Him,

  750. we become like

  751. heat-seeking missiles

  752. except we're

  753. difference-seeking missiles.

  754. We're looking around

  755. where can we find

  756. differences

  757. and we don't look

  758. for differences

  759. so that we can

  760. celebrate them

  761. and say,

  762. isn't that beautiful?

  763. We do it

  764. because we want

  765. to critique.

  766. We want to find

  767. a reason for conflict

  768. because if you're wrong

  769. then I'm right

  770. and I can be better

  771. than you.

  772. So we focus

  773. on the differences.

  774. It happens

  775. with racism

  776. in the church,

  777. right?

  778. Maybe we can

  779. understand it better

  780. if we think

  781. about marriage.

  782. Have you ever

  783. allowed a difference

  784. in how you

  785. and your spouse

  786. approach something

  787. to create distance

  788. in your relationship

  789. rather than love?

  790. Has that ever happened?

  791. Have you allowed

  792. your love

  793. to grow cold

  794. because

  795. she spends money

  796. differently

  797. or he washes

  798. the dishes

  799. differently?

  800. Have you ever

  801. seen a distance

  802. grow there?

  803. And now,

  804. I know all of you

  805. right people

  806. are objecting

  807. at this point.

  808. Yes,

  809. but there are

  810. better ways

  811. to budget.

  812. Some ways

  813. are better

  814. than others

  815. and there are

  816. some ways

  817. that are better

  818. to wash

  819. the dishes

  820. than others

  821. and that may be

  822. true.

  823. That's not the point.

  824. The point is

  825. have you allowed

  826. the difference

  827. to create distance

  828. in your relationship?

  829. Have you begun

  830. to think of yourself

  831. as better

  832. and to let bitterness

  833. and contempt

  834. grow in your heart

  835. over the difference

  836. rather than

  837. appreciating the difference

  838. perhaps?

  839. Or if it does

  840. need to be addressed,

  841. I mean,

  842. you can really

  843. wash dishes poorly,

  844. addressing it graciously

  845. in a way to restore

  846. a loving relationship

  847. rather than

  848. create distance.

  849. the difference

  850. is diversity

  851. is part of the beauty

  852. of the body

  853. of Christ

  854. but when we are right

  855. and not just right

  856. but desperate

  857. to see ourselves

  858. as right,

  859. others have to be wrong

  860. so that we feel righteous

  861. or at least better

  862. than you.

  863. I have to be better

  864. than the next person

  865. and it happens quickly,

  866. doesn't it?

  867. Disconnect truth

  868. from love

  869. and we're unloving

  870. very quickly.

  871. we lose love

  872. immediately.

  873. We see it in our homes.

  874. We see the distance grow.

  875. It happens in our churches too.

  876. Happened in Ephesus,

  877. in America,

  878. in Huntsville.

  879. Some of you in this room,

  880. I've hurt

  881. because I love to be right.

  882. I said it glibly earlier

  883. but it's true

  884. and it hurts people.

  885. When conflict

  886. comes in a church,

  887. a lot of times

  888. people become

  889. identified with positions

  890. and when you have

  891. a position

  892. or a perspective

  893. that's different

  894. from mine

  895. and I'm desperate

  896. to be right,

  897. a lot of times

  898. rather than listening

  899. to you,

  900. rather than seeking

  901. to understand you,

  902. I want to argue

  903. against you.

  904. I want to defend myself.

  905. I want to be vindicated

  906. and so I don't love.

  907. I pursue the truth

  908. and I forget

  909. about love

  910. and when you've been

  911. to seminary

  912. and you've been trained

  913. to do so,

  914. you can throw at people

  915. not just chapter

  916. and verse of the Bible

  917. but you can throw

  918. confessions of faith

  919. and books of church order

  920. and catechisms

  921. that brothers and sisters

  922. of yours

  923. haven't even read

  924. and use them

  925. to defend yourself

  926. rather than

  927. to love someone else,

  928. to be right

  929. and prove someone else wrong

  930. and I may have been

  931. right sometimes

  932. but I have sometimes

  933. failed to love

  934. as well

  935. and deeply wounded people

  936. who are on my team,

  937. people God has put

  938. in my life

  939. for me to care about

  940. and love

  941. and there are probably

  942. others I've hurt

  943. and don't even realize it

  944. maybe some of you

  945. that I'm so concerned

  946. with being right

  947. that I don't even realize

  948. I've hurt you

  949. and that's part of

  950. my sin,

  951. part of what I do

  952. and have done

  953. in the church.

  954. You don't have to be

  955. a pastor though.

  956. You don't have to have

  957. a degree in theological

  958. rightness

  959. to fail to love others.

  960. You just have to be

  961. desperate to be

  962. righter than someone else.

  963. to treat a brother

  964. or sister as an obstacle

  965. or an enemy

  966. because what you want

  967. is right.

  968. To ignore the pain

  969. someone else is experiencing

  970. because the feeling

  971. of being right

  972. is such a high to you

  973. that no one

  974. or nothing else

  975. really matters.

  976. Happens here too,

  977. doesn't it?

  978. Do you feel it

  979. in your own heart?

  980. Do you know the reality

  981. of wanting desperately

  982. to be right?

  983. Does your heart

  984. right now

  985. protest like mine does?

  986. But I was right!

  987. That vindicates me!

  988. I was right!

  989. About the dishes.

  990. About the doctrine.

  991. About the decision.

  992. We've all at times

  993. individually

  994. and corporately

  995. disconnected

  996. truth from love.

  997. What we believe

  998. from how we behave

  999. and we've hurt others

  1000. and practically speaking

1001. not in what we've said

1002. but in how we've acted

  1003. denied

1004. the reality of the gospel.

  1005. That's pretty serious.

  1006. That's pretty bleak,

  1007. isn't it?

  1008. Just shut me down,

  1009. Jesus.

  1010. Shut us down.

  1011. We've blown it.

  1012. Isn't that what you'd feel

1013. if you got a letter

  1014. like this?

1015. Is that what you feel

  1016. when you realize

  1017. that's true of you?

  1018. You've been right

  1019. and unloving?

  1020. What does Jesus say

  1021. to his church?

  1022. Jesus says,

  1023. repent.

1024. Look at verse 5 again.

  1025. Remember therefore

1026. from where you have fallen,

  1027. repent

  1028. and do the works

  1029. you did at first.

  1030. If not,

1031. I will come to you

  1032. and remove your lampstand

  1033. from its place

  1034. unless you repent.

  1035. Repent.

1036. Do what you did at first.

  1037. Repent.

  1038. Repent.

1039. Love the way you used to love.

  1040. Repent.

  1041. Repenting means

  1042. turning from sin.

  1043. It means a change

  1044. of direction.

  1045. Turning away

  1046. from our sin

  1047. and turning back

  1048. to Jesus.

1049. I just want to make

  1050. one observation

  1051. about the repentance

  1052. in this passage.

  1053. Who is told

  1054. to repent?

  1055. The false,

  1056. evil apostles.

  1057. No.

  1058. The heretical

  1059. Nicolaitans.

  1060. No.

  1061. The right ones.

  1062. The right ones

  1063. are told

  1064. to repent.

  1065. They're the ones

  1066. who need to start.

  1067. That's not the way

  1068. we would write it,

  1069. is it?

  1070. Listen,

  1071. I'll do repentance

  1072. and forgiveness,

  1073. reconciliation

1074. as long as they start,

1075. as long as they come

  1076. and apologize

  1077. to me.

  1078. Then I'll repent.

1079. As long as they start,

  1080. the repentance

  1081. will be good.

  1082. Jesus says,

  1083. you repent.

  1084. Parent who's seen

  1085. a child go off

  1086. and lose his way

  1087. and felt,

  1088. I told you so,

  1089. while the relationship

  1090. has grown distant,

  1091. you repent first.

  1092. How has your rightness

  1093. contributed to the love

  1094. growing cold

  1095. between you?

  1096. boss who's belittled

  1097. an employee

  1098. for failing miserably?

  1099. You repent first.

1100. How are you so right

  1101. that you were wrong?

  1102. Church member

  1103. who has allowed

  1104. distance to grow

  1105. in a previously tight,

  1106. loving friendship

1107. with a brother or sister

  1108. who treated you

  1109. or your church wrongly?

  1110. You repent first.

1111. Have you been so right

  1112. that you were wrong

  1113. toward them?

1114. You know the beautiful thing

  1115. about repenting?

  1116. When we finally get

1117. to the point of saying,

1118. I'm not the right one.

  1119. I'm actually willing

  1120. to admit

  1121. that I'm wrong

  1122. to turn from that.

  1123. To say even,

  1124. I was so right

  1125. that I was wrong.

1126. When we turn from that

  1127. in repentance,

1128. who do we turn back to?

  1129. It's Jesus.

  1130. It's Jesus'

  1131. rightness,

  1132. righteousness

  1133. that we turn back

  1134. to when we repent.

  1135. That's the hope

  1136. of the gospel,

  1137. right?

  1138. That's where we turn.

  1139. For those of us

  1140. who are stuck

  1141. in our self-righteousness,

  1142. so intent

  1143. on being right

  1144. and proving

  1145. ourselves right

  1146. and having it all

  1147. so that we can

  1148. be right enough,

  1149. the call is not

  1150. get away from me,

  1151. from our Savior.

  1152. That's not what

  1153. he says,

  1154. is it?

  1155. That's not what

  1156. he says to the

  1157. Ephesian church.

  1158. The call is,

  1159. turn back to me.

  1160. See me,

1161. see the vision of him.

  1162. You know how

  1163. this letter starts?

  1164. Jesus gives the vision

  1165. of himself

  1166. that goes back

  1167. to Revelation chapter 1,

    Revelation 1 chapter mention

  1168. the one John

  1169. has just seen

  1170. in a vision.

  1171. Jesus says,

  1172. verse 1,

1173. the angel of the church

  1174. in Ephesus write,

  1175. the words of him

1176. who holds the seven stars

  1177. in his right hand,

  1178. who walks among

  1179. the seven golden lampstands.

  1180. That's this vision

  1181. of Jesus

  1182. just a couple

  1183. verses before

  1184. who's standing there

  1185. and John sees Jesus

  1186. and says,

  1187. he's righteous,

  1188. he's holy,

  1189. he's magnificent,

  1190. he's powerful

  1191. and you get this

  1192. detailed description

  1193. of Jesus

  1194. and he's holding

1195. his church in his hand.

  1196. What's he saying

  1197. to his people?

  1198. Is he saying

  1199. get away from me?

  1200. No,

  1201. he's walking

  1202. among the seven

  1203. golden lampstands.

  1204. He's with them,

  1205. isn't he?

  1206. He's holding them

  1207. in his powerful

  1208. right hand.

  1209. When you,

  1210. who are so convinced

  1211. that you've got

  1212. to be right,

  1213. finally are willing

  1214. to admit you're wrong,

  1215. you look back

  1216. and find Jesus

  1217. standing there,

  1218. not sending you away

  1219. but saying,

  1220. turn back to me.

  1221. If you've disconnected

  1222. your theology

  1223. from love,

  1224. if you've so wanted

  1225. to be right yourself

  1226. that you've become wrong,

  1227. repent and look back

  1228. at your Savior.

1229. See him in his pure

  1230. righteousness and holiness.

  1231. John says,

  1232. shining as the sun

  1233. at full strength

  1234. and when you fall

  1235. as though dead

  1236. before him

  1237. in your guilt

  1238. and your shame,

1239. listen to what he says

  1240. to you.

  1241. He says,

  1242. fear not.

  1243. Fear not

1244. the one who blew it,

1245. the one who was so caught up

  1246. with being right

1247. that he failed to love.

  1248. Fear not,

  1249. my rightness

  1250. is for you.

  1251. You are forever

  1252. pure in my robes

  1253. and safe

  1254. in my hand.

  1255. Forever.

  1256. I've got you

1257. and now in that security

  1258. with no more need

  1259. to prove yourself right

  1260. because you've got

  1261. my rightness

  1262. given to you,

  1263. now in that security,

  1264. go,

  1265. turn,

  1266. repent

  1267. to others.

  1268. Go love again

  1269. like you did

  1270. at first

  1271. that your church

  1272. would shine

1273. the glory of his name

1274. as you love the truth

  1275. and love each other

  1276. too.

  1277. Let's pray.

  1278. Jesus,

  1279. might we see you

  1280. that way this morning.

  1281. Might we see

  1282. your rightness

  1283. as so much

  1284. more beautiful

  1285. than any

  1286. rightness

  1287. we could defend

  1288. for ourselves?

  1289. Might we truly

  1290. receive it

  1291. and know

  1292. that it is ours

  1293. by faith

  1294. and then

  1295. might we be free

  1296. in that

  1297. to repent?

  1298. To say we've forgotten

  1299. to love.

  1300. We've neglected

  1301. to love.

  1302. we've intentionally

  1303. been unloving,

  1304. hurtful,

  1305. hateful,

  1306. spiteful.

  1307. Father,

  1308. thank you

  1309. that there's hope

  1310. for us.

  1311. Thank you that there's

  1312. forgiveness for us

  1313. and forgiveness

  1314. to extend

  1315. to others.

  1316. Might you

  1317. make us

  1318. a church

  1319. where the truth

  1320. is never compromised

  1321. and where it is

  1322. always connected

  1323. to love?

  1324. Might we love

  1325. the way you have

  1326. loved us?

1327. We ask it in Jesus' name.

  1328. Amen.
