  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. Amen.

  5. Thank you guys so much.

  6. I love Christmas a lot.

  7. Some of the gifts that God has given to this church are people like this who serve us.

  8. Yeah, you can thank them.

  9. There's others who do things like this with flowers and Christmas trees that I don't do.

  10. And they use their gifts on Saturday so you don't actually see them and get to thank them for that.

  11. But it's not just to have fun and just to make something look nice or sound good.

  12. But because we're celebrating something we believe to be worthy of this kind of joy and excitement, right?

  13. It's not just the spirit of a season but the reality of God becoming man that deserves for us to have that kind of joy.

  14. And it's just a gift to see all of you use your gifts in that way, especially to serve this body.

  15. So thank you for the many ways that you do that.

  16. As we enter this Christmas season, we're starting a new sermon series as well and looking at who Jesus is.

  17. Back about 15 years ago as we approached the turn of the millennium in late 1999,

  18. Time magazine ran a cover story that was written by novelist Reynolds Price.

  19. He wrote this,

  20. It would require much exotic calculation to deny that the single most powerful figure,

  21. not merely in these two millenniums but in all human history, has been Jesus of Nazareth.

  22. Not only is the prevalent system of denoting the years based on an erroneous 6th century calculation of the date of his birth,

  23. but a serious argument can be made that no one else's life has proved remotely as powerful and enduring as that of Jesus.

  24. It's an astonishing conclusion in light of the fact that Jesus was a man who lived a short life

  25. in a rural backwater of the Roman Empire,

  26. who died in agony as a convicted criminal,

  27. and who may never have intended so much as a small portion of the effects worked in his name.

  28. Who was Jesus then?

  29. That's the question, isn't it?

  30. Who was Jesus then?

  31. What child is this?

  32. Who was Jesus?

  33. Price gives some of his answer in the rest of that article that he wrote,

  34. but for hundreds of years,

  35. individuals and world religions have been giving answers to that question, haven't they?

  36. A variety of different answers,

  37. and it's a question that's well worth our time to consider.

  38. Jesus is near the top of every reputable, most influential people of all time list.

  39. He's changed the world in many ways.

  40. His birth is going to be celebrated in a variety of ways the world over later this month, right?

  41. By people who believe a wide range of different things about who he is,

  42. who have broadly different answers to that question,

  43. who is Jesus?

  44. Almost everyone these days agrees that there was indeed a baby

  45. who grew up and was a man who lived in the Middle East,

  46. and was called Jesus.

  47. Very few people dispute that anymore.

  48. But they don't agree on who Jesus really was.

  49. And the different answers that they give about his identity

  50. lead to radically different life paths, don't they?

  51. C.S. Lewis has famously said that Jesus was either a liar,

  52. or a lunatic,

  53. or the Lord of all.

  54. That was his famous trilemma.

  55. Who is Jesus?

  56. Either a liar, a lunatic, or the Lord of all.

  57. Now, that may seem like three simple choices,

  58. but those are very different options, aren't they?

  59. Very different answers to the question of who Jesus is.

  60. So it's a very important issue for all of us.

  61. We want to look this Christmas season at the identity of Jesus.

  62. See what the Bible declares about this unique child.

  63. We're going to do that by looking at four titles

  64. that he was given even before his birth,

  65. and ask what they tell us about the child born that first Christmas,

  66. how we see those titles expressed in Jesus' life as he grows up.

  67. So what child is this is the question.

  68. Let's read the context of these titles in Isaiah 9.

  69. We're going to start reading at verse 1.

  70. But there will be no gloom for her who was in anguish.

  71. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun

  72. and the land of Naphtali.

  73. But in the latter time he has made glorious the way of the sea,

  74. the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.

  75. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.

  76. Those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness,

  77. on them has light shined.

  78. You've multiplied the nation.

  79. You have increased its joy.

  80. They rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest,

  81. as they are glad when they divide the spoil.

  82. For the yoke of his burden and the staff for his shoulder,

  83. the rod of his oppressor,

  84. you have broken as on the day of Midian.

  85. For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult

  86. and every garment rolled in blood

  87. will be burned as fuel for the fire.

  88. For to us a child is born,

  89. to us a son is given,

  90. and the government shall be upon his shoulder,

  91. and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor,

  92. Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

  93. Of the increase of his government and of peace,

  94. there will be no end.

  95. On the throne of David and over his kingdom,

  96. to establish it and to uphold it with justice

  97. and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore,

  98. the zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

  99. Thus far God's holy,

  100. inerrant, infallible word.

  101. Will you pray with me?

  102. Father, these are words we've heard before

  103. in different contexts.

  104. But they're not our words.

  105. They're not words we say or words we sing.

  106. They are indeed your words.

  107. And so we ask that you would teach us.

  108. That you, Holy Spirit,

  109. would be the one who shows us

  110. not just what they mean,

  111. but what they mean for our hearts

  112. and in our lives.

  113. Would you take hearts that are easily distracted,

  114. hearts that are easily self-reliant,

  115. and would you make them

  116. desirous of hearing from you?

  117. That you might teach us

  118. and that you might change us

  119. and that we might know Jesus more

  120. as a result of looking at your word together.

  121. We ask it in his name.

  122. Amen.

  123. Amen.

  124. I remember holding each of my girls

  125. in the hospital room

  126. on the day that they were born

  127. and, you know,

  128. looking at them.

  129. They're so small.

  130. And as a dad,

  131. you start to wonder, don't you?

  132. You know,

  133. what's she going to be like?

  134. What kind of things is she going to love?

  135. What will she do?

  136. What will she be like?

  137. Who will she look like?

  138. What will she love?

  139. Will she love me?

  140. That was one of those questions

  141. that was on my mind.

  142. Lots of hopes and dreams

  143. for what this child will be.

  144. As we approach Christmas this year

  145. and we see the baby in the manger,

  146. we have the privilege of knowing

  147. about this baby

  148. because we're looking back, aren't we?

  149. Who was and is Jesus?

  150. What child is this

  151. that we look on in the manger?

  152. God had more than just hopes and dreams

  153. for that child, right?

  154. We find out here in Isaiah

  155. that even as God looks ahead

  156. to the life of His Son

  157. in this prophecy,

  158. He says here's what He's going to be like.

  159. The Son He was giving to His people,

  160. the child to be born,

  161. the Son to be given,

  162. was to be the long-awaited

  163. deliverer and King.

  164. The Messiah that God had promised to send

  165. who would reign on David's throne forever, right?

  166. Look at verse 7.

  167. This is who He's going to be.

  168. On the throne of David

  169. over His kingdom,

  170. He's going to establish it

  171. and uphold it with justice.

  172. He's going to be the one

  173. who rules justly.

  174. The one who's righteous,

  175. who does things right.

  176. And not just for a little while,

  177. but from this time forth

  178. and forevermore.

  179. That's who He's going to be.

  180. Isaiah had prophesied

  181. hard days ahead, hadn't he?

  182. You know the book of Isaiah.

  183. There's a lot of difficult things

  184. He says are coming

  185. for God's people.

  186. But He also holds out hope.

  187. The hope promised

  188. when Adam and Eve

  189. were sent out of the garden

  190. but told that God

  191. would send rescue for them.

  192. The hope promised to Abraham

  193. that His people

  194. would be a great nation

  195. and that all nations

  196. would be blessed through them.

  197. The hope promised to David

  198. that an heir would rule

  199. forever even as the Gentiles

  200. would stream into His kingdom.

  201. And now God is saying what?

  202. He's saying He's coming.

  203. This is the one.

  204. This is that one.

  205. The one I've been telling you about.

  206. The one I've been saying is coming.

  207. That's this one.

  208. What will He be like?

  209. Verse 6 gives us

  210. those four titles

  211. that are hard to hear

  212. without Handel's Messiah

  213. ringing in your head.

  214. Right?

  215. You know,

  216. Wonderful Counselor,

  217. the Mighty God.

  218. I'm going to stop singing

  219. but you've got the general drift.

  220. That was from Handel,

  221. the Messiah.

  222. It's really famous.

  223. It just doesn't sound like that.

  224. And so we hear those notes

  225. in our head

  226. when we hear these

  227. but stop and just look at them again.

  228. We're going to look at them in turn

  229. but Wonderful Counselor,

  230. the Mighty God,

  231. the Everlasting Father,

  232. the Prince of Peace.

  233. Those are not mere wishes

  234. for what His Son might become one day.

  235. What He would be like.

  236. Those are promises

  237. from God the Father

  238. of who this child will be.

  239. We're going to take just the first one

  240. this morning.

  241. Wonderful Counselor.

  242. Look at that for just a minute.

  243. Wonderful Counselor.

  244. Literally,

  245. the words mean

  246. wonder of a counselor.

  247. That word counselor

  248. in Isaiah's context

  249. refers to someone

  250. who makes wise plans,

  251. who gives helpful guidance.

  252. This child is going to be a ruler,

  253. a king,

  254. who leads his people

  255. in the proper direction,

  256. on the right path.

  257. In fact,

  258. for a people described

  259. in this chapter here

  260. as walking in darkness

  261. and dwelling in a land

  262. of deep darkness,

  263. He will be a light,

  264. shining the way forward,

  265. directing them in the proper paths

  266. for their protection

  267. and for their flourishing.

  268. But this is going to be more

  269. than a politician

  270. with a few good ideas, right?

  271. I mean,

  272. Judah and Israel

  273. have known some pretty decent kings,

  274. haven't they?

  275. Judah especially.

  276. They've had some guys

  277. with some good ideas,

  278. some good plans.

  279. And what happens

  280. as you read back

  281. through the history

  282. of God's people

  283. to even the best kings

  284. they have

  285. with the really good ideas

  286. and plans

  287. for God's people?

  288. What's the pattern?

  289. Over and over again,

  290. even the best ones,

  291. and they're not all good

  292. at all,

  293. fail.

  294. They lead the people

  295. well momentarily,

  296. but then they mislead

  297. the people

  298. into idolatry,

  299. into conflict,

  300. even into exile

  301. away from God's promised land.

  302. And God says,

  303. this baby in the manger

  304. is more than just

  305. an above average counselor.

  306. Like somebody who usually

  307. has some nice thoughts

  308. that are helpful

  309. with something.

  310. He is a wonderful counselor.

  311. He will give,

  312. that word actually means

  313. supernatural direction.

  314. He will have wisdom

  315. that is beyond

  316. human comprehension.

  317. It won't just be

  318. the wisest of your friends.

  319. He will make

  320. divine plans unfold.

  321. In fact,

  322. as we keep reading

  323. in Isaiah,

  324. we find these same terms

  325. for wonderful counselor

  326. used for God Himself.

  327. The Lord of hosts,

  328. God Almighty,

  329. described how

  330. in Isaiah 28,

  331. the Lord of hosts

  332. is wonderful in counsel

  333. and excellent in wisdom.

  334. Wonderful in counsel.

  335. God Himself,

  336. it's the way God's described

  337. in His counsel,

  338. in His plans

  339. that stand firm

  340. and are always accomplished,

  341. in His wisdom

  342. that surpasses

  343. all other wisdom.

  344. This child will be divine.

  345. He will be the wonderful counselor

  346. who surpasses

  347. all others.

  348. Where do we see

  349. that reality

  350. in the life of Jesus

  351. as this baby

  352. in the manger

  353. grows into a man?

  354. Where do we see it

  355. as we look at the Gospels?

  356. I think one of the primary

  357. places we see it

  358. is in the teaching

  359. of Jesus

  360. as He explains

  361. the plans of God,

  362. the design for our lives,

  363. the direction He gives

  364. as to where life

  365. is to be found.

  366. God,

  367. perhaps especially

  368. we see it

  369. in a place

  370. like the Sermon on the Mount

  371. which may be

  372. Jesus' most famous

  373. extended teaching lesson

  374. on life, right?

  375. Jesus delivering

  376. in that sermon

  377. remarkable wisdom,

  378. sayings,

  379. and moral teachings

  380. that Christians

  381. and non-Christians

  382. alike

  383. to this day

  384. declare as wise,

  385. think are helpful.

  386. Things like

  387. the Golden Rule,

  388. the Beatitudes,

  389. many others.

  390. But I want to notice

  391. something particular

  392. about this sermon.

  393. In the Old Testament,

  394. God's prophet Moses

  395. is leading His people,

  396. right?

  397. And God wants

  398. to give His law,

  399. His plan for His people

  400. to Moses

  401. and what happens?

  402. Where does Moses go?

  403. Moses goes up

  404. on Mount Sinai, right?

  405. Moses meets with God

  406. there on Mount Sinai

  407. and God sends him

  408. back down

  409. and what's Moses carrying

  410. when he comes down

  411. the mountain?

  412. Two tablets

  413. with some laws

  414. written on them.

  415. God's laws.

  416. We often refer to them

  417. as the Ten Commandments.

  418. Moses comes back

  419. down the mountain

  420. and says,

  421. this is God's wise plan

  422. for our lives.

  423. And now in the

  424. Sermon on the Mount,

  425. what does Jesus do?

  426. Jesus goes up

  427. on a mountain,

  428. but Jesus sits

  429. and stays,

  430. doesn't He?

  431. Jesus stays up

  432. on the mountain

  433. and He doesn't bring

  434. down tablets of stone.

  435. He speaks

  436. God's law,

  437. doesn't He?

  438. He actually

  439. Himself

  440. pronounces

  441. God's wise plans.

  442. The prophet

  443. who Hebrews tells us

  444. is greater

  445. than Moses,

  446. He Himself

  447. delivers

  448. the counsel.

  449. He goes back

  450. to commandments

  451. like,

  452. don't murder,

  453. don't commit adultery.

  454. Others

  455. from the Ten Commandments

  456. and says,

  457. you've heard

  458. one thing about this,

  459. but I tell you

  460. the truth.

  461. This is what God means.

  462. This is God's heart

  463. when He gives you

  464. His law.

  465. This is where life

  466. is truly found.

  467. He Himself

  468. provides

  469. the counsel,

  470. the authoritative,

  471. divine,

  472. wise plan.

  473. And the crowds

  474. notice.

  475. They hear Him teach

  476. in the Sermon on the Mount.

  477. Do you remember

  478. how they respond

  479. at the end of that?

  480. Matthew records it

  481. this way

  482. in His Gospel.

  483. When Jesus finished

  484. these sayings,

  485. the Sermon on the Mount,

  486. the crowds were

  487. astonished

  488. at His teaching.

  489. For He was teaching them

  490. as one who had authority

  491. and not as their scribes.

  492. They marveled.

  493. They were astonished.

  494. They stood open-mouthed,

  495. not just at the wisdom

  496. of what He said,

  497. not just at the sayings,

  498. not just that

  499. that was cute

  500. or that was creative

  501. where that might be helpful.

  502. But this guy has authority

  503. that I've never heard

  504. from the best human teachers.

  505. From those who've given me

  506. the best direction,

  507. there's something different.

  508. Jesus' teaching

  509. has remained

  510. highly regarded

  511. for centuries

  512. since it was

  513. first recorded.

  514. He communicates

  515. everything we need

  516. to know for life.

  517. He talks about

  518. what our priorities

  519. are to be,

  520. whom we can trust,

  521. how we're to deal

  522. with difficulty

  523. and conflict

  524. and suffering

  525. and much,

  526. much more.

  527. And that's what it means

  528. among other things

  529. to say that Jesus

  530. is a wonderful counselor.

  531. He unfolds God's wise plans

  532. for His people.

  533. He gives people direction

  534. to where life is found,

  535. where true flourishing is.

  536. He offers unparalleled leadership

  537. in the right paths.

  538. That's a pretty big statement

  539. to make of a baby

  540. in a manger,

  541. of a child in this case

  542. yet to be born.

  543. It's a big deal

  544. to be able to identify

  545. Jesus in that way.

  546. But I want us to consider

  547. another question this morning.

  548. Not just who is Jesus?

  549. What child is this?

  550. Not just that question,

  551. but who is Jesus to me?

  552. If there's any other question

  553. that would be more important

  554. than who is Jesus,

  555. it may be the question,

  556. who is Jesus to me?

  557. And I don't mean by that

  558. that each of us gets

  559. to identify Jesus

  560. any way we please.

  561. That we can make Him out

  562. to be whoever we'd like Him to be.

  563. That would be as ridiculous

  564. as walking around

  565. the newborn wing

  566. of a hospital

  567. and naming babies

  568. however you wanted them

  569. to be named.

  570. You know, you walk into a room

  571. and the parents say,

  572. this is Jimmy

  573. and you say,

  574. no, you know what?

  575. I'm going to go with Mike.

  576. You don't get that privilege.

  577. We don't get to unilaterally

  578. decide His identity

  579. and make Him

  580. whatever we want Him to be.

  581. We do, however,

  582. have to decide

  583. how we personally respond

  584. to who Jesus is.

  585. That's what I mean

  586. by the question,

  587. who is Jesus to me?

  588. Let me see if I can explain

  589. the vital difference

  590. between those two things

  591. this way.

  592. It's the difference

  593. between knowing the identity

  594. of a great chef

  595. and actually tasting

  596. some of His food.

  597. It's the difference

  598. between walking down

  599. the streets of New Orleans

  600. and seeing Emeril Lagasse

  601. walking down the other side

  602. and saying,

  603. oh, I know that guy.

  604. I recognize him

  605. from the Food Network.

  606. He's a great chef.

  607. He's that guy

  608. that goes bam, bam, bam

  609. all the time.

  610. I know him.

  611. Great chef.

  612. It's the difference

  613. between that

  614. and actually sitting down

  615. and savoring

  616. Emeril's chicken gumbo

  617. one bite at a time

  618. and personally feeling

  619. bam, bam, bam.

  620. wow, I'm actually tasting

  621. that this guy

  622. is a great chef.

  623. It's kind of like

  624. the difference

  625. in some ways

  626. in hearing about

  627. this wonderful place

  628. called Disney World

  629. and looking at all

  630. of the happy people

  631. in their Facebook pictures

  632. as they've gone there

  633. and talk about

  634. how great it is

  635. and then actually going

  636. and seeing the magical looks

  637. on your daughter's faces

  638. as they dance

  639. with princesses

  640. and ride rides

  641. and that sort of thing.

  642. It's a very different experience

  643. to be there

  644. rather than just

  645. hear about it

  646. or know some facts

  647. about it, isn't it?

  648. That's actually

  649. what we all need.

  650. It's what God wants

  651. for us

  652. with his son

  653. not merely

  654. to know a set of facts

  655. but actually

  656. to experience

  657. Jesus.

  658. Jesus.

  659. Many of us

  660. I know a lot of you

  661. have known for years

  662. things about the identity

  663. of Jesus

  664. but have we personally

  665. experienced them?

  666. Are we personally

  667. experiencing him

  668. as for example

  669. our wonderful counselor?

  670. Not just a wonderful counselor

  671. but my wonderful counselor.

  672. It's not much good

  673. to know someone

  674. is a wonderful counselor

  675. if you never find yourself

  676. under his counsel.

  677. What would that look like

  678. in your life

  679. for Jesus

  680. to be your

  681. wonderful counselor?

  682. How would you explain that

  683. to someone

  684. who didn't understand

  685. that Jesus

  686. is actively

  687. your wonderful counselor?

  688. Think about that.

  689. How would you?

  690. How is Jesus

  691. your wonderful counselor?

  692. Let me suggest

  693. two areas

  694. this morning

  695. where we could consider

  696. that reality

  697. in our own lives.

  698. The first is Jesus

  699. as light

  700. in our darkness.

  701. I don't know

  702. if you've ever

  703. been in a cave

  704. where you can get

  705. utter darkness

  706. where you turn off

  707. all the lights

  708. and it's completely dark.

  709. Not too long ago

  710. my family and I

  711. went to

  712. cathedral caverns.

  713. It's not far away

  714. if you haven't been there

  715. you can go actually

  716. do this yourself.

  717. It's a great place.

  718. And at the end

  719. of your journey

  720. into the caverns

  721. you stop

  722. and you turn out

  723. all the lights

  724. and there's this

  725. moment where you can't

  726. see your hand

  727. in front of your face.

  728. You don't even

  729. know that it's there.

  730. If you turn around

  731. even once

  732. it's difficult

  733. to reorient yourself.

  734. Which direction

  735. am I facing?

  736. Which wall

  737. is on which

  738. side of me?

  739. It's very

  740. confusing

  741. in many ways.

  742. Within a few seconds

  743. you have no idea

  744. if the people

  745. next to you

  746. are the same people

  747. and who's where.

  748. Have you ever felt

  749. disoriented like that

  750. spiritually

  751. or in your life?

  752. Without any direction

  753. at all?

  754. Just confused?

  755. Feeling in the dark?

  756. Not knowing

  757. where life was

  758. or which way to head?

  759. Maybe you feel

  760. that way today.

  761. Maybe someone

  762. you know

  763. feels that way.

  764. In the midst

  765. of that kind

  766. of darkness

  767. in that cave

  768. our guide

  769. brought this

  770. really powerful

  771. LED light.

  772. Right?

  773. And you turn off

  774. all the lights

  775. and then he cuts

  776. that powerful light on

  777. and that one clear light

  778. all of a sudden

  779. makes the path

  780. forward clear.

  781. You could just

  782. follow that

  783. one light

  784. all the way back.

  785. It shines

  786. so brightly

  787. gives very clear

  788. direction

  789. and that's the experience

  790. God describes

  791. for his people

  792. in Isaiah 9

  793. isn't it?

  794. People walking

  795. in darkness

  796. seeing a great

  797. light.

  798. Those who are

  799. confused

  800. without a plan

  801. uncertain how

  802. to move forward

  803. perhaps at times

  804. fretting

  805. was there any

  806. hope of moving

  807. forward?

  808. They receive wisdom

  809. divine direction

  810. a clear

  811. and hopeful

  812. way forward.

  813. If you're

  814. disoriented

  815. or confused

  816. in the dark

  817. this morning

  818. might you consider

  819. experiencing

  820. Jesus

  821. as your

  822. wonderful

  823. counselor?

  824. Laying hold

  825. of him

  826. yet again

  827. in a way

  828. you haven't

  829. for a long

  830. time

  831. or maybe

  832. for the first

  833. time

  834. open his word

  835. and ask him

  836. to guide you

  837. talk to someone

  838. you know

  839. who is following

  840. him and ask

  841. them to help

  842. you get

  843. reoriented

  844. pray that God

  845. would give you

  846. light in the

  847. midst of your

  848. darkness

  849. Christian

  850. could you

  851. honestly say

  852. to a friend

  853. that Jesus

  854. is that light

  855. in your moments

  856. of darkness?

  857. Could you cite

  858. some specific

  859. real life

  860. examples where

  861. he has been

  862. and is that

  863. for you

  864. or is Jesus

  865. just theoretical

  866. in your life?

  867. Think of things

  868. in the past

  869. think of

  870. things in the

  871. present

  872. how is Jesus

  873. that for you

  874. now?

  875. Because many of us

  876. have had that

  877. experience

  878. of finding

  879. light and life

  880. in Jesus

  881. when we didn't

  882. know where to

  883. look

  884. when we were

  885. at our wits end

  886. when we'd come

  887. to the end

  888. of ourselves

  889. and found

  890. light and life

  891. in him

  892. but maybe

  893. for many of us

  894. it's been a while

  895. since we found

  896. ourselves actually

  897. in that position

  898. of being confused

  899. and completely

  900. without a plan

  901. has it been a while

  902. for you since you

  903. felt that way?

  904. When we were there

  905. in that cave

  906. in Cathedral Caverns

  907. we were on a tour

  908. with a group

  909. made up of

  910. many young people

  911. and so there was

  912. a large group

  913. that had gathered

  914. around and the

  915. guide said

  916. alright turn all

  917. the lights off

  918. and every young

  919. person in the group

  920. did what?

  921. Yeah turn the

  922. cell phone on

  923. Oh yeah I'm gonna

  924. be the one

  925. with the light

  926. and so everyone

  927. and they one at a

  928. time and he'd tell

  929. them to turn it

  930. off and somebody

  931. else would turn

  932. one on

  933. little faint

  934. screens of light

  935. that showed up

  936. little soft lights

  937. that distracted

  938. from the experience

  939. of total darkness

  940. and one really

  941. bright light

  942. maybe you acknowledge

  943. that you need

  944. some direction

  945. in life

  946. but you know

  947. where to find it

  948. you've got a phone

  949. how am I gonna

  950. navigate this next

  951. season of life?

  952. How will I deal

  953. with the evils

  954. in the world

  955. around me?

  956. How will I reach

  957. a decision

  958. in this crucial

  959. area of life?

  960. You know what

  961. I got this

  962. I got a phone

  963. I've got my

  964. go-to people

  965. there's a really

  966. wise politician

  967. that I'm hoping

  968. will bail us

  969. out

  970. maybe he's got

  971. great ideas

  972. like King Ahaz

  973. in Isaiah's day

  974. some really good

  975. plans

  976. and you think

  977. this is where

  978. Israel can stake

  979. all their hopes

  980. this is where

  981. God's people

  982. are finally gonna

  983. find rescue

  984. but while he seems

  985. to have some wisdom

  986. he's not like

  987. the divine

  988. wonderful

  989. counselor

  990. maybe for you

  991. it's a great

  992. religious teacher

  993. or leader

  994. you say

  995. I always read

  996. what he or she

  997. has to say

  998. I trust whatever

  999. he said

  1000. maybe it's a blog

  1001. or a pop celebrity

  1002. that you say

  1003. I always follow

  1004. and after I read

  1005. her I just

  1006. feel good

  1007. about the direction

  1008. of my life again

  1009. it just kind of

  1010. re-centers me

  1011. listen

  1012. we do this

  1013. if I haven't

  1014. hit on the way

  1015. you do it

  1016. we do this

1017. just a few years ago

  1018. Americans spent

  1019. in one year

  1020. eleven billion dollars

  1021. on the self-help

  1022. industry

  1023. self-improvement

  1024. books

  1025. CDs

  1026. seminars

  1027. coaching

  1028. stress management

  1029. programs

  1030. eleven billion dollars

  1031. and estimates

  1032. are that that's

  1033. increasing

  1034. every year

  1035. we want a plan

  1036. don't we

  1037. a wise direction

  1038. a solution

  1039. to me

  1040. to my life

  1041. hope for moving

  1042. forward

  1043. and we say

  1044. things like

  1045. I'm praying

  1046. about it

  1047. I'm just trying

  1048. to take some time

  1049. and pray about it

  1050. but in actuality

  1051. often we're planning

  1052. strategizing

  1053. and worrying

  1054. about it

  1055. in actuality

  1056. we're pulling

  1057. our phones out

  1058. not praying

  1059. we're saying

  1060. I'll figure out

  1061. I'll find a light

  1062. here

  1063. there's a way

  1064. forward

  1065. I know there's

  1066. something

  1067. I've got this

  1068. looking for

  1069. wisdom

  1070. in the world

  1071. when God says

  1072. he will make

  1073. foolish

  1074. the wisdom

  1075. of the world

  1076. because

  1077. Jesus himself

  1078. becomes our wisdom

  1079. 1st Corinthians

  1080. chapter 1

  1081. do you know

  1082. Jesus

  1083. and the wisdom

  1084. he gives

  1085. through his

  1086. word and spirit

  1087. but you found

  1088. yourself saying

  1089. things like

  1090. I'll follow

  1091. Jesus

  1092. I will

  1093. that's important

  1094. after my plans

  1095. are achieved

  1096. after my college

  1097. years are fully

  1098. enjoyed

  1099. or after my

  1100. career is settled

  1101. or after we

  1102. get through this

  1103. stage of life

  1104. with the kids

  1105. Jesus is coming

  1106. I've got plans

  1107. for now

  1108. and I've got to

  1109. get through them

  1110. and I'll follow

  1111. Jesus when I get

  1112. through

  1113. I'll find his

  1114. plans later

  1115. maybe you've said

  1116. things like

  1117. you know

  1118. my situation

  1119. is just unique

  1120. Jesus in his

  1121. word don't say

  1122. anything to

  1123. this decision

  1124. I'm unique

  1125. I just have to

  1126. do what's best

  1127. for me

  1128. he'd never

  1129. understand my

  1130. situation

  1131. maybe you've

  1132. said you know

  1133. Jesus and his

  1134. priorities just

  1135. don't apply in

  1136. this area of my

  1137. life

  1138. they only have to

  1139. do with church

  1140. stuff and it's

  1141. it's really nice

  1142. to hear about and

  1143. talk about then

  1144. but not with the

  1145. rest of my life

  1146. Jesus says

  1147. seek first

  1148. his kingdom

  1149. and his

  1150. righteousness

  1151. and all these

  1152. other things

  1153. will be added

  1154. to you as well

  1155. sermon on the

  1156. mount

  1157. you want wise

  1158. counsel

  1159. he says

  1160. God's kingdom

  1161. first

  1162. he says

  1163. your priorities

  1164. are out of

  1165. whack

  1166. you're looking

  1167. for direction

  1168. in the wrong

  1169. places

  1170. and for Jesus

  1171. to be your

  1172. wonderful counselor

  1173. means coming to

  1174. Jesus first

  1175. means submitting

  1176. your plans

  1177. to his word

  1178. means laying

  1179. down what

  1180. you desire

  1181. in order to be

  1182. passionate about

  1183. what he desires

  1184. for your zeal

  1185. to match

  1186. his zeal

  1187. for his

  1188. kingdom

  1189. he's calling

  1190. you to experience

  1191. him as the

  1192. wonderful counselor

  1193. for you

  1194. as the one

  1195. who guides you

  1196. perfectly

  1197. who directs

  1198. your paths

  1199. straight

  1200. who always

  1201. leads you

  1202. to fullness

  1203. of life

  1204. even when it

  1205. doesn't feel

  1206. like it

  1207. because your

  1208. priorities have

  1209. changed

  1210. you trust

  1211. him

  1212. that's what

  1213. it means

  1214. to experience

  1215. to taste

  1216. him

  1217. as it were

  1218. as your

  1219. wonderful

  1220. counselor

  1221. and listen

  1222. last thing

  1223. this is the

  1224. glory of the

  1225. gospel

  1226. the beauty

  1227. of Jesus

  1228. as wonderful

  1229. counselor

  1230. is this

  1231. when he

  1232. gives you

  1233. the wise

  1234. plan for

  1235. your life

  1236. he doesn't

  1237. ask you

  1238. to go

  1239. anywhere

  1240. he hasn't

  1241. already

  1242. gone

  1243. does he

  1244. but we

  1245. think

  1246. oh no

  1247. all the

  1248. self-denial

  1249. involved

  1250. in that

  1251. all the

  1252. sacrifice

  1253. that's going

  1254. to demand

  1255. of me

  1256. when Jesus

  1257. asks you

  1258. to lay

  1259. down your

  1260. way

  1261. or your

  1262. very life

  1263. it's because

  1264. he's already

  1265. laid his

  1266. down for

  1267. you

  1268. he says

  1269. over and

  1270. over in

  1271. the gospels

  1272. I've come

  1273. to do the

  1274. will of

  1275. my father

  1276. not my

  1277. will

  1278. but his

  1279. will

  1280. be done

  1281. I choose

  1282. to lay

  1283. down my

  1284. life

  1285. for the

  1286. sheep

  1287. because he

  1288. does that

  1289. Jesus doesn't

  1290. merely show

  1291. the way

  1292. to abundant

  1293. life

  1294. he actually

  1295. is the

  1296. way

  1297. the way

  1298. the truth

  1299. the life

  1300. Jesus doesn't

  1301. merely point

  1302. to the door

  1303. to the father

  1304. and say

  1305. over there

  1306. get to him

  1307. through that

  1308. he is the

  1309. door

  1310. to the father

  1311. Jesus doesn't

  1312. merely shine

  1313. light into

  1314. the darkness

  1315. like a guide

  1316. with a

  1317. flashlight

  1318. he is

  1319. the light

  1320. the light

  1321. of the

  1322. world

  1323. who gives

  1324. life to

  1325. every man

  1326. whoever

  1327. follows him

  1328. will not

  1329. walk in

  1330. darkness

  1331. but have

  1332. the light

  1333. of life

  1334. the wonderful

  1335. counsel you get

  1336. from Jesus

  1337. is not merely

  1338. all the right

  1339. things to do

  1340. in order to

  1341. get back

  1342. on the right

  1343. path

  1344. but he says

  1345. follow me

  1346. believe in

  1347. me

  1348. find your

  1349. life in

  1350. me

  1351. I am

  1352. the

  1353. wonderful

  1354. counselor

  1355. is he

  1356. your

  1357. wonderful

  1358. counselor

  1359. today

  1360. let's pray

  1361. father I

  1362. confess that

  1363. I would

  1364. rather feel

  1365. wise myself

  1366. than

  1367. trust your

  1368. wisdom

  1369. I would

  1370. rather figure

  1371. out where

  1372. life is

  1373. found than

  1374. be told

  1375. I would

  1376. rather be the

  1377. one with the

  1378. solution than

  1379. the one with

  1380. the questions

  1381. thank you

  1382. that you

  1383. come

  1384. and offer

  1385. yourself

  1386. as our

  1387. solution

  1388. thank you

  1389. that we

  1390. don't actually

  1391. find life

  1392. in ourselves

  1393. thank you

  1394. for the

  1395. those moments

  1396. where we've

  1397. found a

  1398. dead end

  1399. and an

  1400. emptiness

  1401. trying to

  1402. do things

  1403. our own

  1404. way

  1405. thank you

  1406. for showing

  1407. us

  1408. Jesus

  1409. as

  1410. not just

  1411. one who

  1412. gives

  1413. light

  1414. but one

  1415. who is

  1416. light

  1417. that we

  1418. don't have

  1419. to try

  1420. to figure

  1421. things out

  1422. we can

  1423. just throw

  1424. ourselves

  1425. on him

  1426. would you

  1427. give us

  1428. the humility

  1429. the desperation

  1430. the sense

  1431. of our own

  1432. need enough

  1433. that we

  1434. would trust

  1435. him and

  1436. that we'd

  1437. find great

  1438. joy in

  1439. following him

  1440. our wonderful

  1441. counselor

  1442. it's in his

  1443. name we pray

  1444. amen
