  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. Whew.

  5. That's a, no, no, don't do that.

  6. That's a tough act to follow.

  7. I'm really thankful for a committee and the session.

  8. And definitely want you all to know of our love for this church, this city.

  9. How excited we are about what God is doing here and the fact that we get to be a part of it.

  10. We're really thrilled about that.

  11. As hard as this seems to me right now, I'm going to preach this morning.

  12. It's been recommended that I'm not.

  13. Y'all would all go for that.

  14. But this is actually really important because the reality is this, and I mean this with all my heart.

  15. The big news this morning is not that the search committee has a pastor nominee.

  16. It's not.

  17. It's that the God of the universe wants to meet with you and bless you.

  18. Isn't that amazing?

  19. We're going to talk about the fact that Jesus, the baby in the manger that we're celebrating at Christmas,

  20. has come to us to be the mighty God, come to his people to live on earth for us,

  21. to die in our place, to set this table before us this morning and invite us to commune with him,

  22. to be his friend.

  23. Isn't that incredible?

  24. And you get excited about a pastor nominee.

  25. That's something to be excited about.

  26. And that's what we get to look at in God's word.

  27. I've been saying since early this year, back when I didn't know what was going to happen,

  28. what God was going to do in my heart to call me to this position,

  29. that what Southwood needed to be hoping in and relying on was not new programs

  30. and was not a new pastor,

  31. but the power of God at work through Jesus Christ in his church.

  32. That has been our hope.

  33. That remains our hope.

  34. I'm convinced that is still true today.

  35. We need to believe that now.

  36. We continually need a renewed vision of God's love for us in Jesus Christ.

  37. And that's what he gives us this morning.

  38. That's what we need today.

  39. We need to open God's word.

  40. We need to hear from God's heart.

  41. We need to come to God's table together.

  42. So let's turn to Isaiah chapter 9.

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  43. And hear from God's holy word.

  44. Isaiah 9 at verse 1.

  45. But there will be no gloom for her who was in anguish.

  46. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali.

  47. But in the latter time he has made glorious the way of the sea,

  48. the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.

  49. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.

  50. Those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shined.

  51. You've multiplied the nation.

  52. You have increased its joy.

  53. They rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest,

  54. as they are glad when they divide the spoil.

  55. For the yoke of his burden,

  56. and the staff for his shoulder,

  57. the rod of his oppressor,

  58. you have broken as on the day of Midian.

  59. For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult,

  60. and every garment rolled in blood,

  61. will be burned as fuel for the fire.

  62. For to us a child is born,

  63. to us a son is given,

  64. and the government shall be upon his shoulder,

  65. and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor,

  66. Mighty God,

  67. Everlasting Father,

  68. Prince of Peace.

  69. Of the increase of his government and of peace,

  70. there will be no end.

  71. On the throne of David and over his kingdom,

  72. to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness,

  73. from this time forth and forevermore,

  74. the zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

  75. Thus far, God's holy word.

  76. Will you pray with me?

  77. Father, we are thankful for your word.

  78. We're thankful for good news of great joy,

  79. that a Savior is born.

  80. And it is our prayer this morning

  81. that we would have the joy that comes from knowing

  82. that you have met our deepest needs for deliverance,

  83. that our sin has been atoned for,

  84. that a Savior has been born to us,

  85. as we learn more of him in your word today.

  86. Would Jesus indeed be the one in whom our hearts rejoice?

  87. Would that be true for us today?

  88. Would that be true for us always?

  89. We ask it in his name.

  90. Amen.

  91. We are talking this Christmas season about the identity of Jesus.

  92. What child is this?

  93. Who is Jesus?

  94. And we are using these four titles that Jesus is given here

  95. in the sixth verse of Isaiah chapter 9.

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  96. So last week we talked about Jesus as wonderful counselor,

  97. as the one who unfolds God's wise plans for his people,

  98. who gives direction to where life is truly found,

  99. who shines light on the proper paths for us,

  100. who in fact himself is that light

  101. and is the way to the Father.

  102. This morning we are going to talk about Jesus as mighty God.

  103. The mighty God who can carry out his wise plans.

  104. The one who is capable,

  105. who is able to achieve the ends of his wonderful counsel.

  106. Isaiah describes it this way in chapter 14.

  107. He says,

  108. This is the purpose that is purposed concerning the whole earth.

  109. This is the hand that is stretched out over all the nations.

  110. For the Lord of hosts has purposed and who will annul it?

  111. His hand is stretched out and who will turn it back?

  112. When he has purposes, when he has plans,

  113. they cannot be changed.

  114. He's able, he's strong and mighty to accomplish his purposes.

  115. They will come to pass.

  116. Jeremiah chapter 32.

    Jeremiah 32 chapter mention

  117. Ah, Lord God, it is you who have made the heavens and the earth

  118. by your great power and by your outstretched arm.

  119. Nothing is too hard for you.

  120. You show steadfast love to thousands,

  121. but repay the guilt of fathers to their children after them.

  122. Oh, great and mighty God,

  123. whose name is the Lord of hosts,

  124. great in counsel and mighty in deed.

  125. Great in counsel with wisdom and plans,

  126. and mighty in deed,

  127. strong to see them accomplished.

  128. This is what it means to be the mighty God.

  129. That nothing is too hard for you.

  130. When he's talked about as mighty God,

  131. he talks about things like creating everything out of nothing.

  132. Redeeming people out of slavery.

  133. Judging all of mankind.

  134. He is strong.

  135. He's active and at work.

  136. His plans cannot be thwarted.

  137. He's the mighty God.

  138. But this is much more than just a description of a child who's coming.

  139. That this is what he's going to be like.

  140. That he's going to be strong and mighty.

  141. It is that.

  142. But in particular,

  143. in this verse,

  144. it's a title of God himself,

  145. given to the promised child.

  146. In both of the passages we've just looked at,

  147. those are speaking of the Lord of hosts,

  148. of Yahweh himself,

  149. God Almighty.

  150. The one referred to as mighty God

  151. was God himself.

  152. El Gabor.

  153. That's how you say it in Hebrew.

  154. The mighty God.

  155. You may have heard of many Hebrew titles like that for God.

  156. A lot of them start with El.

  157. El Shaddai.

  158. The God who provides.

  159. Who's all sufficient.

  160. El Royi.

  161. The God who sees me.

  162. El Elyon.

  163. God most high.

  164. Names for God throughout the scriptures.

  165. Over and over again.

  166. And now in this verse,

  167. El Gabor.

  168. Mighty God.

  169. It's one of his titles.

  170. It's who God is.

  171. And here, don't miss what's so obvious

  172. that we could easily look over it.

  173. Who gets the title?

  174. Who in this passage is the mighty God?

  175. It's the promised baby in the manger, isn't it?

  176. It's Jesus.

  177. The reality of the promised child being divine

  178. is evident in all four of these titles.

  179. We talked last week of Wonderful Counselor,

  180. that Jesus was to be one with wisdom

  181. that was supernatural beyond human comprehension.

  182. But the divine nature of the promised child

  183. is most clear in this title of God himself

  184. given to Jesus.

  185. Mighty God.

  186. When we talk about that mystery

  187. of Jesus being the mighty God,

  188. we talk about it in terms of him being fully God

  189. and fully man, right?

  190. A reality that in some ways

  191. defies our complete comprehension.

  192. But what's happened in recent decades

  193. is that there's been a move away

  194. from appreciating that mystery

  195. and towards trying to take it and say,

  196. here's how we'll handle this mystery.

  197. It's actually that Jesus was not divine at all.

  198. In fact, he never claimed to be.

  199. And so, many people,

  200. particularly many scholars,

  201. even those who would identify themselves

  202. as Christians

  203. and claim to follow the moral teachings of Jesus,

  204. they've argued that being divine

  205. was simply not on Jesus' radar at all.

  206. It was something made up by his followers

  207. after he was gone.

  208. And that this is what he meant

  209. and this is what he would have claimed.

  210. And this is standard fare these days

  211. in religious studies courses

  212. on college campuses.

  213. It's standard fare in many divinity schools.

  214. And so, because those of us

  215. who started hearing this

  216. when we were in school

  217. are getting older now,

  218. it's standard fare among our friends

  219. and our neighbors

  220. and those we do life with.

  221. That this is what we're supposed to believe.

  222. And I say to you this morning,

  223. the significance of Jesus' deity

  224. is of such fundamental importance

  225. to our faith.

  226. It's foundational to all of the early church creeds

  227. and confessions of the church.

  228. That Jesus was fully God

  229. and fully man

  230. has been vital

  231. to what it means to be a Christian.

  232. It's worth talking about

  233. for a few minutes this morning.

  234. To be honest with you,

  235. it astounds me

  236. that scholars can look honestly

  237. at the New Testament

  238. and choose sometimes to ignore

  239. the myriad ways

  240. Jesus claims to be divine

  241. and to concoct other explanations

  242. for things that are more easily explained

  243. by that single fact.

  244. Where do we see Jesus as mighty God

  245. in the Gospels?

  246. There's a number of ways.

  247. I'll mention just a couple of them this morning.

  248. First, He forgives sins.

  249. Look at Luke chapter 5.

    Luke 5 chapter mention

  250. You know this story.

  251. You've heard about the paralytic

  252. whose friends loved Him so much

  253. that when they couldn't get Him to Jesus,

  254. what did they do?

  255. They took Him around the side of the building,

  256. climbed up on the roof,

  257. cut a hole,

  258. lowered Him down in front of Jesus,

  259. and He gets there

  260. and Jesus says what?

  261. Verse 20,

  262. Man, your sins are forgiven you.

  263. And the scribes and Pharisees

  264. began to question saying,

  265. Who is this who speaks blasphemies?

  266. Who can forgive sins but God alone?

  267. They get it right.

  268. The scribes and Pharisees,

  269. you should know,

  270. are good ones to follow on these.

  271. They got a good radar

  272. for people blaspheming.

  273. They know when you're claiming to be God

  274. and when Jesus forgives sins,

  275. they said,

  276. Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.

  277. Problem.

  278. Only God can do that.

  279. And they're right, aren't they?

  280. To forgive sins as a whole

  281. can only be done

  282. by one against whom all sin is committed.

  283. I can't forgive your sin

  284. that you committed against somebody else,

  285. can I?

  286. Only the one against whom

  287. the offense has been committed

  288. can forgive the sin.

  289. And they say,

  290. Only God can do that in a general way

  291. and forgive someone's sins.

  292. What does Jesus say?

  293. Why do you question in your hearts?

  294. What's easier to say?

  295. Your sins are forgiven you

  296. or to say,

  297. Rise and walk?

  298. But that you may know

  299. that the Son of Man

  300. has authority on earth

  301. to forgive sins

  302. so that you can all be clear

  303. that I really can do this.

  304. I say to you,

  305. Rise, pick up your bed

  306. and go home.

  307. And he does

  308. and he goes home glorifying God

  309. and they're all amazed

  310. and they glorify God

  311. and they say,

  312. We've seen extraordinary things today.

  313. Not just a man healed

  314. but sins forgiven.

  315. And so when Jesus is questioned,

  316. Hey, you don't have that authority.

  317. He says,

  318. Let me actually not back down

  319. but let me confirm to you

  320. that the Son of Man

  321. has authority on earth

  322. to forgive sins.

  323. I do have that authority

  324. and he demonstrates it.

  325. Another example,

  326. Jesus receives worship

  327. from many who fall or bow before him.

  328. It happens several times.

  329. One of the best ones

  330. is during his triumphal entry

  331. into Jerusalem.

  332. His followers begin to praise him

  333. saying,

  334. Blessed is the King

  335. who comes in the name of the Lord.

  336. Peace in heaven.

  337. Glory in the highest.

  338. They're praising him.

  339. They're worshiping him

  340. as he comes into the city

  341. on the donkey.

  342. And again,

  343. the Pharisees catch it.

  344. They hear it.

  345. Hey, teacher,

  346. tell them they've gotten it

  347. out of control.

  348. They're getting run away

  349. with this whole worship thing

  350. that you would be God.

  351. Teacher,

  352. tell them to stop saying

  353. such horrible things.

  354. And Jesus says what?

  355. No, it's not that

  356. you misunderstand

  357. what they're saying.

  358. They don't really mean

  359. that I'm God.

  360. The Pharisees,

  361. you misunderstand them.

  362. No, he doesn't say that at all.

  363. He says you misunderstand

  364. who I am.

  365. That I am worthy

  366. of this worship

  367. to the point

  368. that if they stop,

  369. the very stones

  370. will cry out

  371. and worship me.

  372. Be clear about who I am.

  373. I will receive such worship.

  374. One last example.

  375. One of the great demonstrations

  376. of Jesus as mighty God

  377. is his miracles, right?

  378. The wonderful deeds

  379. that he does

  380. that demonstrate

  381. his power and authority.

  382. Things like turning water

  383. into wine.

  384. Like feeding more than

  385. 5,000 people

  386. with five loaves of bread

  387. and two fish.

  388. Healing many, many people

  389. of various diseases.

  390. Many of his miracles.

  391. Those miracles, remember,

  392. were written about

  393. in the lifetime

  394. of many people

  395. who witnessed them.

  396. If they were made up later

  397. by his followers,

  398. they would have been

  399. easily repudiated

  400. by people in the towns

  401. where they're recorded

  402. to have taken place.

  403. It would have been easy

  404. to say,

  405. that didn't happen.

  406. He never said that.

  407. That event never took place.

  408. And instead,

  409. they were widely affirmed

  410. and therefore believed.

  411. But the unique thing

  412. about Jesus' miracles

  413. is that he performs them

  414. on his own authority.

  415. Time and again,

  416. he performs miracles

  417. on his own authority.

  418. Now that's strange

  419. because before

  420. and after Jesus,

  421. prophets who performed

  422. wonders and signs

  423. always were quick

  424. to point out

  425. where their power came from.

  426. To say,

  427. oh, this wasn't me.

  428. It was the authority of God

  429. by which this happened.

  430. And Jesus never

  431. gives such explanations.

  432. In fact,

  433. he did quite to the contrary

  434. in many of his miracles.

  435. One example would be

  436. Matthew chapter 8.

    Matthew 8 chapter mention

  437. He heals a leper.

  438. The leper comes to him

  439. and says,

  440. Lord, if you will,

  441. you can make me clean.

  442. And Jesus said,

  443. don't be confused.

  444. Not me,

  445. but if God's okay with it.

  446. No.

  447. Jesus does what?

  448. Jesus immediately

  449. stretches out his hand

  450. and says,

  451. I will be clean.

  452. And he is.

  453. Jesus says,

  454. it only requires

  455. me willing it.

  456. And the miracle occurs.

  457. My authority is my own.

  458. Because I will it,

  459. you will be clean.

  460. There are many,

  461. many other such proofs

  462. of Jesus' awareness

  463. of his deity

  464. in the Gospels.

  465. He teaches on his own authority

  466. as we saw last week.

  467. He grants eternal life.

  468. He judges mankind.

  469. He applies Old Testament passages

  470. about God to himself

  471. over and over and over again.

  472. He does that.

  473. This is God incarnate.

  474. Emmanuel,

  475. God with us.

  476. The one who has been promised.

  477. The one we've been hoping for.

  478. God is coming to save us.

  479. Here He is.

  480. This distinction

  481. between Jesus being

  482. yet another prophet

  483. or good teacher

  484. and being the eternal Son of God,

  485. the mighty God Himself

  486. is a vital one.

  487. It distinguishes

  488. between world religions

  489. like Islam,

  490. Mormonism,

  491. and Christianity.

  492. It's the distinction

  493. that C.S. Lewis makes

  494. when he gives his famous trilemma

  495. in mere Christianity.

  496. When he says,

  497. Jesus is either liar,

  498. lunatic,

  499. or Lord.

  500. This is the way Lewis says it.

  501. I'm trying here

  502. to prevent anyone

  503. saying the really foolish thing

  504. that people often say

  505. about Jesus.

  506. I'm ready to accept Jesus

  507. as a great moral teacher,

  508. but I don't accept

  509. His claim to be God.

  510. Lewis says,

  511. that is the one thing

  512. we must not say.

  513. A man who was merely

  514. a man

  515. and said the sort of things

  516. Jesus said

  517. would not be

  518. a great moral teacher.

  519. He would either be

  520. a lunatic

  521. on the level

  522. with the man

  523. who says he is

  524. a poached egg

  525. or else he would be

  526. the devil of hell.

  527. You must make your choice.

  528. Either this man was

  529. and is the Son of God

  530. or else a madman

  531. or something worse.

  532. You can shut him up

  533. for a fool.

  534. You can spit at him

  535. and kill him as a demon

  536. or you can fall at his feet

  537. and call him Lord and God.

  538. But let us not come

  539. with any patronizing nonsense

  540. about his being

  541. a great human teacher.

  542. He has not left

  543. that open to us.

  544. He did not intend to.

  545. Lewis,

  546. a long committed atheist himself

  547. goes on to say this,

  548. now it seems obvious to me

  549. that he was neither

  550. a lunatic nor a fiend

  551. and consequently,

  552. however strange

  553. or terrifying

  554. or unlikely it may seem,

  555. I have to accept the view

  556. that he was

  557. and is God.

  558. It's a famous argument,

  559. an old one now

  560. and people of course

  561. don't like it anymore.

  562. And the most popular response

  563. right now to this

  564. and this comes from

  565. those who call themselves

  566. Christians

  567. and those who don't,

  568. it's the one I mentioned earlier,

  569. that Jesus never claimed

  570. what the Gospels indicate

  571. and so Lewis has left out

  572. a fourth choice.

  573. Liar, lunatic, Lord

  574. or legend.

  575. Legend, they would say.

  576. He was completely,

  577. it was made up

  578. by his followers.

  579. This guy existed.

  580. There's too much evidence

  581. to deny that

  582. but he didn't really

  583. claim these things.

  584. So the fact that he's God

  585. is a legend.

  586. He can be a good teacher

  587. as long as he never claimed it.

  588. I've begun to show you

  589. why I don't think

  590. that line of thinking

  591. holds any water.

  592. There's much, much more there

  593. we don't have time for

  594. this morning.

  595. But,

  596. this important distinction

  597. is one that we talk about

  598. because it's been

  599. on Jesus' heart.

  600. It's one he wanted

  601. to make clear.

  602. It's been on his heart

  603. since his earthly ministry.

  604. In what may be called

  605. the first public opinion poll,

  606. Jesus asks his disciples,

  607. what are you hearing out there?

  608. Who do people say I am?

  609. In Matthew 16,

  610. they tell him

  611. what they're hearing.

  612. Some say John the Baptist.

  613. Others say Elijah.

  614. Others, Jeremiah,

  615. one of the prophets.

  616. Jesus said to them,

  617. but who do you say

  618. that I am?

  619. Simon Peter replied,

  620. you are the Christ,

  621. the Son of the living God.

  622. Some say John the Baptist,

  623. a great teacher.

  624. Kind of strange,

  625. but a great teacher.

  626. But then you do

  627. all these wonderful deeds

  628. and they've watched you

  629. and they've seen them

  630. and so they say,

  631. oh, it's Elijah,

  632. one of those prophets

  633. that did great signs.

  634. And Jesus turns the question

  635. on them,

  636. who do you say that I am?

  637. And the answer

  638. that Jesus praises

  639. is neither of the ones

  640. that have come from the crowds,

  641. but Peter's declaration

  642. that Jesus is indeed

  643. the Son of the living God,

  644. the anointed King

  645. promised to God's people.

  646. This grasp of His identity,

  647. Jesus says,

  648. is so foundational.

  649. It's the basis of the church

  650. that I'm going to build.

  651. Yes, blessed are you

  652. and I'm going to build my church

  653. right there on you

  654. knowing and understanding

  655. who I am.

  656. The thing I love most

  657. about Jesus' question

  658. to His disciples there

  659. is that it moves us

  660. from the merely theoretical

  661. or theological

  662. to the intensely personal,

  663. doesn't it?

  664. But what about you?

  665. Who do you say that I am?

  666. Not what do the polls say?

  667. Not what do you hear out there?

  668. Who do you say that I am?

  669. And we said last week,

  670. that's what we were going

  671. to ask ourselves

  672. during this series.

  673. As we look at these

  674. four titles of Jesus,

  675. not just what's His identity,

  676. who is Jesus,

  677. but who is Jesus to me?

  678. We want to ask

  679. if we're merely identifying

  680. a great chef

  681. and knowing who He is

  682. or if we're personally

  683. experiencing Him,

  684. actually tasting His food

  685. and personally identifying

  686. and being impacted

  687. by that reality.

  688. Not a mere identity

  689. at arm's length,

  690. but who is Jesus to me?

  691. Isaiah has prophesied

  692. that Jesus will be

  693. the mighty God.

  694. I've argued that Jesus

  695. claimed to be

  696. and is the mighty God,

  697. but is He your mighty God?

  698. Who do you say that He is

  699. and perhaps even more importantly,

  700. who do you experience Him

  701. as in your life?

  702. Let's apply that to our lives.

  703. These first couple

  704. may seem obvious,

  705. but if He is your mighty God,

  706. then He receives

  707. all your worship,

  708. doesn't He?

  709. All of it.

  710. Do you live as though

  711. He's worthy of all honor

  712. and praise?

  713. Do you worship Him like that

  714. when you are in this room?

  715. Do you worship Him like that

  716. when you leave this room?

  717. Do you pray to Him

  718. as though He actually is

  719. strong to help you?

  720. As though nothing is too hard for Him?

  721. As though He really intervenes

  722. in the world that He has created

  723. and would do that in your life?

  724. Do you pray to Him like that?

  725. Is He actively and practically

  726. your mighty God?

  727. Do you seek to obey Him

  728. in everything?

  729. If He's just a good teacher

  730. or an inspirational leader,

  731. had some good things to say,

  732. then you can follow

  733. the things you like

  734. and the places you don't understand

  735. or don't like,

  736. you can just leave Him out

  737. like you would with anybody else, right?

  738. If that's all He is,

  739. then take what you like

  740. and leave the rest.

  741. But if He's God,

  742. then I must follow all of it, right?

  743. We say, sure, of course,

  744. yeah, right,

  745. but do we live like that?

  746. Are there areas of your life

  747. where you'd prefer

  748. to stay on the throne,

  749. where you've decided

  750. you know best,

  751. where you're committed

  752. to doing it one way

  753. regardless of what His Word says?

  754. I'd ask you this morning,

  755. are you regularly seeking

  756. to know Him

  757. and His heart for you more?

  758. Do you hunger for this

  759. in a way that you want to know

  760. what Jesus would have

  761. to say into my life

  762. or only on the times

  763. when you want to look good

  764. or when you really feel confused?

  765. Is He actively and practically

  766. your mighty God?

  767. Worship Him.

  768. Obey Him.

  769. And finally,

  770. trust Him

  771. in every situation.

  772. John Calvin says

  773. that's what Jesus being

  774. the mighty God is about.

  775. That the big takeaway from this

  776. is that we may now

  777. rely on Him with safety.

  778. That He is strong for us

  779. and for our salvation

  780. in every circumstance.

  781. We can trust that.

  782. And we're going to get

  783. to talk more about this

  784. in the next couple of weeks.

  785. But Isaiah here in chapter 9

  786. sees God's people.

  787. What He says is coming for them

  788. is they're going to be oppressed.

  789. He sees them as weak.

  790. He sees them as failing.

  791. And that's where God's people

  792. are going to be,

  793. Isaiah says,

  794. when this prophecy comes true.

  795. And it's going to be

  796. to those oppressed,

  797. weak, failing people

  798. that to us,

  799. a son is born.

  800. To us, Isaiah says,

  801. there's a child coming

  802. and He's going to be given to us.

  803. Do you see the glory

  804. of what He's saying?

  805. Do you see God's solution

  806. to our problems

  807. and our weakness and failing?

  808. The mighty God

  809. has come to us.

  810. The point we noticed

  811. at the beginning

  812. that the title is given

  813. to a baby in a manger,

  814. come to earth

  815. to walk among us,

  816. to suffer with us.

  817. He has given Himself

  818. to us.

  819. That's the child

  820. Isaiah is speaking of.

  821. Listen, friends,

  822. God is indeed

  823. strong

  824. and mighty.

  825. He is great

  826. and powerful.

  827. But He's not removed

  828. and distant

  829. from you.

  830. He's not a theoretical

  831. mighty God.

  832. He has entered in.

  833. He has come

  834. to be

  835. your mighty God

  836. to rescue

  837. you.

  838. Every other religion

  839. in the world

  840. seeks to say,

  841. how do we get to God?

  842. Every idea

  843. we come up with,

  844. how do we get to God?

  845. And biblical Christianity

  846. says the story

  847. is about this.

  848. God came to you.

  849. God came to you.

  850. He came to give Himself

  851. for you.

  852. Isaiah says,

  853. the baby you're going

  854. to celebrate

  855. this Christmas

  856. who will enter your pain

  857. and walk on this earth

  858. is God Himself.

  859. God is

  860. the mighty

  861. God.

  862. The good news

  863. of the gospel

  864. again today.

  865. You've heard it before.

  866. It's the same

  867. good news.

  868. It's that the mighty God,

  869. the creator

  870. of the universe

  871. has moved

  872. towards you,

  873. has been born

  874. in a stable

  875. for you,

  876. has died

  877. on a cross

  878. for you,

  879. is coming again

  880. to take you

  881. to be with Him

  882. and has set

  883. this table

  884. before you

  885. to invite you

  886. to commune with Him

  887. and be His friend.

  888. That's the good news

  889. of the gospel.

  890. That's what it means

  891. for Jesus

  892. to be the mighty God

  893. who created it all,

  894. who reigns over

  895. all of it today,

  896. for whom nothing

  897. is too hard.

  898. He's come

  899. to you.

  900. Emmanuel,

  901. Emmanuel,

  902. God

  903. with us.

  904. that's what we celebrate

  905. at this table.

  906. That's what it reminds us

  907. of.

  908. That He is strong

  909. for us.

  910. We can trust Him.

  911. He's come to be with you.

  912. He's not waited for you

  913. to get stronger,

  914. to figure it out,

  915. to clean yourself up.

  916. He's come

  917. to give Himself

  918. for you

  919. in your weakness,

  920. in your sin,

  921. in your refusal

  922. to acknowledge Him

  923. as God.

  924. Jesus comes to you,

  925. gives Himself

  926. for you,

  927. and invites you

  928. to eat

  929. with Him.

  930. The

  931. mighty God.

  932. On the night

  933. He was betrayed,

  934. Jesus took bread

  935. and broke it

  936. and said,

  937. this is My body

  938. which is for you.

  939. Do this

  940. in remembrance

  941. of Me.

  942. In the same way

  943. also He took the cup

  944. after supper

  945. saying,

  946. this cup is the new covenant

  947. in My blood.

  948. Do this as often

  949. as you drink it

  950. in remembrance

  951. of Me.

  952. For as often

  953. as you eat this bread

  954. and drink this cup,

  955. you proclaim

  956. the Lord's death

  957. until He comes.

  958. Because He desired

  959. so strongly

  960. to have

  961. a relationship

  962. with you,

  963. and because

  964. you weren't strong enough

  965. to get to Him,

  966. the mighty God

  967. came to you

  968. and gave Himself

  969. for you.

  970. He came to meet with you.

  971. He set the table

  972. this morning.

  973. He extended the invitation

  974. and said,

  975. come,

  976. come eat with Me.

  977. If you've known that,

  978. if you've known Jesus

  979. as the mighty God,

  980. if you've known Him

  981. as the only way

  982. to have your relationship

  983. with your heavenly Father

  984. restored,

  985. then come

  986. and eat

  987. with great joy

  988. this morning.

  989. If you hear

  990. some of these things

  991. and what Jesus claims

  992. and what God's Word says

  993. and you think,

  994. I don't know about that.

  995. That seems a little far-fetched.

  996. If you're not sure

  997. who Jesus is

  998. or who He is

  999. to you personally,

  1000. then I'd encourage you

1001. not to come to this table

  1002. but to consider

  1003. the claims of Jesus.

  1004. It's a matter,

  1005. we believe,

  1006. of life and death,

  1007. of eternity

  1008. to take some time

  1009. to consider that

1010. as something we should all do.

  1011. Who is Jesus?

  1012. What do I do

  1013. with someone

1014. who walks on this earth

  1015. and claims to be

  1016. God Himself?

  1017. If He is indeed

  1018. the mighty God,

  1019. then when He says

1020. no one comes to the Father

  1021. except by Me,

  1022. He's inviting you.

  1023. He's inviting you

  1024. to come

  1025. to know

  1026. the God

  1027. who made you,

  1028. to know the God

  1029. who loves you,

  1030. to know Him

  1031. through

  1032. Jesus Himself.

1033. It would be a great honor

  1034. for any of us

  1035. to talk with you

  1036. about Him this morning.

1037. Please grab one of us.

1038. We'd love to talk with you

  1039. about Jesus.

  1040. Pray with me

  1041. and then we'll come

  1042. to the table together.

  1043. Lord Jesus,

  1044. You

  1045. are the reason

  1046. that we are able

  1047. to fellowship

  1048. with our Father.

  1049. You're the reason

1050. that He has been able

  1051. to adopt us

  1052. into His family

  1053. because You

  1054. have paid

  1055. for our sins,

  1056. because You

  1057. have provided

  1058. our perfect righteousness.

  1059. We give You

  1060. thanks and praise

  1061. this morning.

  1062. Would You set

  1063. these elements aside

  1064. from a common use

  1065. to a sacred one

  1066. in our hearts

  1067. that would push us

  1068. to remember

1069. what You've done for us

  1070. and to rejoice again

  1071. in a God

  1072. who would give Himself

  1073. for us.

1074. We ask it in Your name.

  1075. Amen.

  1076. Jesus,

  1077. on the night

  1078. He was betrayed,

  1079. took bread

  1080. and He broke it

  1081. and gave it

  1082. to His disciples.

  1083. As I,

  1084. ministering in His name,

1085. give this bread to you,

  1086. He said,

  1087. take, eat.

  1088. This is My body

  1089. broken for you.

  1090. Do this

  1091. in remembrance of Me.

  1092. In the same way,

  1093. after supper,

  1094. He took the cup

  1095. and said,

1096. this cup is the new covenant

  1097. in My blood

  1098. shed for many

  1099. for the remission

  1100. of sins.

  1101. Drink from it,

  1102. all of you.

  1103. Our host team

  1104. will usher us

  1105. to the front

  1106. and to the back

1107. and we will feast together.

  1108. Come,

  1109. taste and see

1110. that the Lord is good

1111. and has come to you.

  1112. For more information,

  1115. Thank you.

  1116. Thank you.

  1117. You're all right.

  1118. You're right.

1119. What to do on your mind,

  1120. pat for you?

  1121. You're right.

  1122. You're right.

  1123. Take care.

  1124. You're right.

  1125. You're right.

  1126. Pat.

1127. Get ready to meet me,

  1128. vers constante,

  1129. and to the back

  1130. and see you,

1131. in all you have to

  1132. need to read,

  1133. increase the swear

  1134. for the evil now.

  1135. 해야 justice over you.

  1136. All right.

  1137. Take care.

  1138. See you.
