  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. And one of the ones that I quickly said was Jeff Hamm. You see some things about him,

  4. about his biography there in your bulletin, but I won't refer to that. I want to give you

  5. two pictures of his heart. Jeff and I have known each other for a long, long time. Jeff was,

  6. grew up, we grew up in the same church. And when he was a sophomore in high school,

  7. I had him and two other guys that met with me at our house every Tuesday morning at 6.30 a.m.

  8. These are sophomore boys in high school. And being a parent of two boys, that doesn't happen very often.

  9. And these were men who truly wanted to know God. And it was fun to be with them then.

  10. And another part of that was, I taught a Bible study at the same church, and Jeff attended that.

  11. And the thing I noticed about Jeff, more than anything, was his intense passion for the Word

  12. of God. It was just incredible. And I want to liken it to, since we're in the bowl season,

  13. I want to liken it to, you know, the two big schools in the state of Alabama. And the fan base

  14. is just unbelievable. Not the obnoxious ones, the intense ones, okay? That's what Jeff is for the

  15. Word of God. I mean, where, you know, if you talk to one of these fans of either of those two schools,

  16. they could tell you some really, you know, inane facts about 1937 winner or 1945 winner or who ran

  17. the ball here or whatever. And they can give you chapter and verse. Well, Jeff can do that from the

  18. eternal Word of God. And it's so fun when I sit with him now, I leave the conversation going,

  19. oh my goodness, this man has a passion for the Word of God. So I hope you'll see that. And thank you so

  20. much again, Jeff, for being with us today. Indeed, I am in the awkward situation of speaking to those,

  21. some of whom I've known since I was 14 years old. But for that, I truly do give thanks and glory to God.

  22. It is good to see some of you that you are persevering with the Lord and that you are growing

  23. and walking steadfastly with Him. But with that said, despite what Tim said, there would be undoubtedly

  24. some of you here against whom I would have sinned in my youth. And for that, I truly beg your pardon

  25. and forgiveness. By the grace of God, I'm not who I was. I'm not the same person that some of you

  26. knew long ago. I'm not the same man, thankfully, that my wife married 24 years ago tomorrow.

  27. And so by the grace of God, crazy as it sounds, I'm an ordained PCA pastor, having served two

  28. congregations. And most recently, I was serving, had the distinct pleasure of serving as a moderator

  29. of the Presbytery in South Alabama. But alas, the fathers and the brothers discovered very quickly,

  30. I did not know what I was talking about. And so they took action and informed me that if I were

  31. to continue in the ministry, then I'd have to go back to school for remedial education. And so that is

  32. what I'm doing now. And so I've taken a sabbatical to do exactly that. And so we, my family, has moved here

  33. to Huntsville, where my wife and I are both from, while I have descended below the radar to drop off

  34. the grid to try to pursue the PhD in systematic theology in Aberdeen, Scotland. And so I go back,

  35. God willing, next month for the last time to finish this final and third year of this crazy commitment.

  36. With all that said, I would ask that you would now help me to glorify God and ascribe honor to Him

  37. as we read together, most reverently, God's most holy, inerrant, and infallible Word. And I was

  38. informed that you have the English Standard Version in front of you in your pew racks. I'll try to read

  39. along in the same version. But let us do that as we come now to do exactly that for which we are

  40. created. We confessed it together. If you did that sincerely, what is the chief end of man? In other

  41. words, what is the reason that we are here? What is the purpose of life? And that is to glorify God

  42. and to enjoy Him forever. And so we do want to begin that even now and renew that commitment and

  43. confession that we've just made together. And so I'll be reading from Luke, the gospel according

  44. to this Gentile convert. He never knew Jesus. He was not one of the twelve. He was the beloved physician

  45. of the Apostle Paul, and he is from Troas, which is on the coast of the Aegean Sea in modern-day Turkey.

  46. this convert. This convert from, of all things, this former fanatical terrorist, Saul of Tarsus,

  47. turned apostle. Luke studied under Paul, was converted under his influence, and traveled with him,

  48. and then back to Palestine to investigate the truth regarding this man, Jesus, about whom he writes.

  49. And so listen very carefully. Luke 41 through 49. That's chapter 2, if I did not mention that.

  50. Now, his parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover.

  51. And when he was 12 years old, they went up according to custom. And when the feast was ended,

  52. as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem. His parents did not know it,

  53. but supposing him to be in the group, they went a day's journey. But when they began to search for

  54. him among their relatives and acquaintances, and when they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem,

  55. searching for him. After three days, they found him in a temple, sitting among the teachers,

  56. listening to them and asking them questions. And all who heard him were amazed at his understanding

  57. and his answers. And when his parents saw him, they were astonished. And his mother said to him,

  58. Son, Son, why have you treated us so? Behold, your father and I have been searching for you in great distress.

  59. And he said to them,

  60. Why were you looking for me?

  61. Did you not know

  62. that I must be

  63. in my father's

  64. house?

  65. The word of God for the people of God.

  66. Thanks and praise and glory

  67. be to God.

  68. Let's pray.

  69. Father, we come before you and we confess

  70. that in the very beginning, you

  71. created everything out of nothing.

  72. You called into being that which was not there by the power of your word.

  73. And we do thank you

  74. that it is by the same word that you have informed us and revealed unto us

  75. who your son is, the infinite God-man.

  76. And we do praise you for him and the redemption

  77. that he has bought for us

  78. and applied to us via the Holy Spirit.

  79. And so we do ask again,

  80. kind sir,

  81. as we come down to this portion of the worship

  82. that we seek

  83. to give to you, we do ask

  84. that you would once more fulfill

  85. what John the Baptist told his disciples

  86. about Jesus

  87. when he was getting more attention than him,

  88. that he would increase

  89. and that I would decrease

  90. and that you would use this beggar

  91. to show other beggars

  92. where I have found bread.

  93. And we do pray this

  94. for Christ's sake.

  95. Amen.

  96. Amen.

  97. A decade ago,

  98. a book was published

  99. that immediately hit the New York Times bestseller.

  100. Six million copies were sold.

  101. It was translated into over 40 different languages

  102. and spinning off of this,

  103. a blockbuster movie was released.

  104. And the story

  105. rocked the faith

  106. of many

  107. evangelicals.

  108. As you know,

  109. the Da Vinci Code

  110. opens with this murder

  111. at the Louvre

  112. and it spins off

  113. into this quest

  114. for

  115. the Holy Grail

  116. and we cannot cover

  117. all the details

  118. of that narrative,

  119. but

  120. the premise

  121. of the narrative

  122. is this,

  123. that the historical

  124. Jesus

  125. of Nazareth

  126. is not the same

  127. as the Christ

  128. of the church.

  129. There is

  130. a real historical man,

  131. Jesus,

  132. but the church

  133. came along

  134. in the fourth century

  135. and it muddied up

  136. the waters

  137. through which he had

  138. originally walked

  139. and it added

  140. all these dogmas

  141. about the virgin birth,

  142. the miracles,

  143. and the resurrection,

  144. etc.

  145. and so there is

  146. really not that much

  147. that we actually know

  148. about the man

  149. in history,

  150. Jesus of Nazareth.

  151. We only know

  152. that which we received

  153. about Christ

  154. of the church.

  155. And so it goes

  156. in the movie

  157. that all this is encoded

  158. in the book as well.

  159. All this is encoded

  160. in the artwork

  161. of Leonardo da Vinci

  162. and if you were

  163. to study that,

  164. you would see

  165. that indeed

  166. Jesus of Nazareth

  167. had a lover,

  168. Mary Magdalene,

  169. by whom he fathered

  170. a child, Sarah,

  171. who is the ancestor

  172. then of this bloodline

  173. that exists in Europe

  174. today,

  175. really in the aristocracy

  176. of Europe.

  177. And so it continues.

  178. Now, anybody

  179. that's a student

  180. of history knows

  181. that this is totally bogus.

  182. The premise of the plot,

  183. I should also inform you,

  184. was based upon the fact

  185. that Constantine

  186. in this great power struggle

  187. to polarize

  188. his political enemies

  189. started this

  190. conspiracy theory

  191. and then he summoned

  192. together then

  193. these theologians

  194. across the European continent

  195. to Nicaea

  196. at the Council of Nicaea

  197. in AD 325

  198. and there was invented

  199. Christology

  200. as we know it.

  201. That's when it came

  202. into being.

  203. And as I mentioned,

  204. if you're a student

  205. at all of history,

  206. you know the bogusness

  207. of that because

  208. on my shelf

  209. are books

  210. written by men

  211. that assert

  212. and subscribe

  213. to the deity

  214. of Christ

  215. that are written

  216. in the first century

  217. and the second century,

  218. long before Constantine

  219. lived in the fourth century.

  220. You've got Tertullian

  221. and Ignatius

  222. and Polycarp

  223. and Clement of Alexandria,

  224. etc.

  225. All these men

  226. that held to the deity

  227. of Christ.

  228. That was never questioned.

  229. That was not the reason

  230. for which

  231. the Council of Nicaea

  232. was summoned at all.

  233. It's because this guy

  234. Arius arose on the scene

  235. that was teaching

  236. that Jesus was

  237. the first created being,

  238. that he was not eternal,

  239. etc.

  240. But the Da Vinci Code

  241. is also just bad theology.

  242. The author,

  243. Mr. Brown,

  244. did not hypothesize

  245. the premise

  246. to his plot.

  247. It's old theology.

  248. Best summarized

  249. in the title

  250. of a book

  251. that was published

  252. in 1907

  253. by a guy

  254. with the name

  255. of Albert Schweitzer.

  256. And the title

  257. of his book

  258. was

  259. The Quest

  260. for the Historical

  261. Jesus.

  262. And Schweitzer

  263. wasn't

  264. initiating

  265. this idea at all.

  266. In fact,

  267. he was summarizing

  268. preceding centuries

  269. of scholarship,

  270. beginning with

  271. these guys

  272. named

  273. Reimaris,

  274. Vrede,

  275. Kant,

  276. Schleiermacher,

  277. Hegel,

  278. etc.

  279. All these guys

  280. that arose

  281. during the Enlightenment

  282. and saw,

  283. look,

  284. the universe

  285. is governed

  286. by the laws

  287. of planetary motion,

  288. etc.

  289. There is no God.

  290. We cannot believe in God.

  291. Jesus wasn't divine.

  292. The Christ,

  293. the church,

  294. must have invented

  295. all this stuff

  296. because it can't be true.

  297. Therefore,

  298. the Jesus of history

  299. is actually

  300. a distinct person

  301. and therefore

  302. began

  303. the so-called

  304. quest

  305. for the historical

  306. Jesus.

  307. Because the Christ

  308. of the church

  309. is distinct

  310. from the Jesus

  311. of Nazareth

  312. of history.

  313. Well,

  314. in our text today,

  315. we have

  316. a quest

  317. for the historical

  318. Jesus.

  319. And it is conducted

  320. not by

  321. Da Vinci Code

  322. detectives,

  323. not by

  324. Enlightenment

  325. philosophers,

  326. not by

  327. liberal

  328. critics,

  329. liberal

  330. theologians,

  331. but rather

  332. we see

  333. that those

  334. on this quest

  335. for Jesus

  336. are

  337. Joseph

  338. and Mary.

  339. and when

  340. we analyze

  341. their quest

  342. like we're

  343. about to do,

  344. then we learn

  345. that if one

  346. was to begin

  347. a quest,

  348. a sincere

  349. and a genuine

  350. and a wholehearted

  351. quest for the

  352. historical Jesus,

  353. then you

  354. will find

  355. the person

  356. who is no one

  357. less than

  358. human and divine

  359. at the same

  360. time,

  361. the

  362. Theanthropos,

  363. the God-man.

  364. Now let me

  365. prove that to

  366. you,

  367. and let's

  368. back up.

  369. We're going to

  370. pull some

  371. things together,

  372. just hold on

  373. to them,

  374. and then we're

  375. going to bring

  376. them all

  377. together and

  378. apply them

  379. to our own

  380. selves so that

  381. we might know

  382. therefore how

  383. we shall live

  384. in this dark

  385. world.

  386. Of the four

  387. gospel writers,

  388. the four evangelists

  389. as they're so

  390. called,

  391. Luke is the

  392. only one that

  393. tells us anything

  394. at all about

  395. Jesus after

  396. his birth and

  397. before the

  398. inauguration of

  399. his public

  400. ministry at the

  401. age of 30.

  402. And so I would

  403. assume, I haven't

  404. been here with

  405. you during the

  406. Advent season,

  407. I assume that

  408. this narrative,

  409. this wonderful

  410. and beautiful

  411. and majestic

  412. narrative has

  413. been reviewed

  414. where you had

  415. the shepherds

  416. and the wise

  417. men and all

  418. this glory and

  419. mystery and

  420. wonder and

  421. this then is

  422. the very next

  423. thing that we

  424. learn about

  425. that person.

  426. He's 12

  427. years old

  428. and he goes

  429. to Jerusalem.

  430. And Luke

  431. informs us of

  432. the reason.

  433. Notice in

  434. verse 41,

  435. just follow along

  436. with me in your

  437. pew Bibles,

  438. I'll pull out a

  439. few things from

  440. some of these

  441. verses and I

  442. want to draw

  443. your attention to

  444. these verses so

  445. you know that I'm

  446. not deceiving you.

  447. But verse 41,

  448. we read that

  449. every year his

  450. parents went to

  451. Jerusalem for the

  452. feast of the

  453. Passover.

  454. In the Old

  455. Testament, there

  456. are three

  457. mandatory feasts

  458. for the heads

  459. of households

  460. to observe and

  461. of course it was

  462. highly encouraged

  463. that the family

  464. participate as

  465. well.

  466. The Passover,

  467. Pentecost, and

  468. the feast of

  469. booze.

  470. So here is this

  471. lovely family from

  472. the highlands of

  473. Nazareth.

  474. They go to

  475. Jerusalem for the

  476. feast.

  477. It is wonderful.

  478. It is lovely.

  479. Everyone has a

  480. good time but

  481. alas, school

  482. begins again next

  483. week.

  484. We have to go

  485. back to work and

  486. you feel the

  487. sinking dread in

  488. your bones of

  489. the future week.

  490. And so everyone

  491. has to leave and

  492. they go home but

  493. on the way home

  494. there is a little

  495. anomaly.

  496. A child is

  497. missing.

  498. Notice verse

  499. 43.

  500. After the feast

  501. was over, while

  502. his parents were

  503. returning home, the

  504. boy Jesus stayed

  505. behind in

  506. Jerusalem but his

  507. parents did not

  508. know it.

  509. Now I know some

  510. of you and I

  511. know where you

  512. vacation.

  513. So imagine you're

  514. on the Florida

  515. Panhandle and

  516. you're coming

  517. back home after

  518. vacation.

  519. Or maybe you're

  520. in Gulf Shores and

  521. you're coming up

  522. I-65 or from the

  523. Florida Panhandle and

  524. you're coming up

  525. 331 and it is

  526. crazy and it is

  527. stressful especially

  528. on 331 when it's

  529. two-laned and you're

  530. in just bumper to

  531. bumper traffic and

  532. by the time you get

  533. to Montgomery you're

  534. not even fit to be

  535. around.

  536. You're unapproachable.

  537. At least I am.

  538. And so I'm a mess.

  539. And so you can

  540. imagine by the time

  541. you make it to

  542. Montgomery and you

  543. discover that a

  544. child is missing.

  545. Now that's the

  546. situation here.

  547. Now I don't think

  548. that this at all

  549. implies that Mary

  550. or Joseph were

  551. negligent and

  552. irresponsible parents.

  553. For one thing

  554. they do turn

  555. around.

  556. And I've been

  557. tempted not to.

  558. In fact we've been

  559. in this exact same

  560. situation if you

  561. must know the

  562. truth.

  563. It was on a

  564. Sunday.

  565. I was a pastor

  566. and we got home

  567. after church and

  568. we're kind of

  569. assembling in the

  570. dining room where

  571. there is usually

  572. this, in our

  573. lovely dining room

  574. there is this

  575. lavish feast that

  576. is usually prepared

  577. by my bride.

  578. And I just

  579. quickly surveyed the

  580. situation and

  581. noticed we were

  582. missing a child.

  583. So I went back

  584. to the church

  585. unlocked the

  586. sanctuary.

  587. I had the keys

  588. to the sanctuary.

  589. I was the

  590. pastor.

  591. Went to the

  592. front pew and

  593. there he was.

  594. Fast asleep.

  595. Unconscious.

  596. Oblivious to the

  597. world and the

  598. panic that he had

  599. caused.

  600. And so we went

  601. back home merrily

  602. and happily.

  603. And so you see

  604. this is an easy

  605. mistake that could

  606. happen to any of

  607. us.

  608. which has

  609. happened to

  610. some of us.

  611. So it doesn't

  612. imply that they're

  613. irresponsible,

  614. negligent parents.

  615. But there's this

  616. additional factor

  617. that's involved.

  618. We might notice

  619. it when we

  620. consider how

  621. they travel.

  622. Notice verse

  623. 44.

  624. Supposing him to

  625. be in the group

  626. or another

  627. translation would

  628. read, the NIV

  629. reads, in their

  630. company.

  631. They look for

  632. him among the

  633. relatives and

  634. friends.

  635. And so they

  636. caravan together.

  637. They do not

  638. travel as

  639. isolated,

  640. compartmentalized

  641. families in their

  642. own vehicles to

  643. their destination.

  644. But it might be

  645. more akin to

  646. some of y'all on

  647. a Friday night

  648. football game and

  649. you've got to go to

  650. some place in the

  651. boondocks of

  652. Alabama that you

  653. have no idea where

  654. it is.

  655. And so you might

  656. follow other

  657. people and some

  658. others might even

  659. tag along with you.

  660. And as children, as

  661. they are, they want to

  662. go with their

  663. friends.

  664. And so your children

  665. might be in a car

  666. ahead of you and

  667. then their children

  668. might be with you in

  669. the rear and there

  670. might be several of

  671. you traveling there at

  672. the same time.

  673. And so they travel in

  674. a caravan.

  675. They don't necessarily

  676. travel as

  677. compartmentalized families

  678. knowing where every

  679. person in the family

  680. is at any given

  681. time.

  682. So they all go down

  683. together.

  684. But there's an

  685. additional factor in

  686. how they get there in

  687. this traveling.

  688. The children or

  689. they're walking, if

  690. you don't know.

  691. They're walking.

  692. They're not actually

  693. traveling in their own

  694. vehicles.

  695. And so they're walking

  696. and the children lead

  697. out first.

  698. They're followed by the

  699. women and then the

  700. men follow last.

  701. The reason being it

  702. would just be pointless

  703. for the men to leave

  704. because we're always in

  705. a hurry and we'd

  706. always be frustrated as

  707. everyone is tagging

  708. along and it would

  709. just ruin everyone's

  710. day.

  711. And so the children,

  712. being the slowest,

  713. they set the pace.

  714. And they lead first.

  715. And then the women

  716. fall along behind the

  717. children.

  718. And you can imagine

  719. there they are talking

  720. about whatever was

  721. posted on Facebook,

  722. etc.

  723. And whose kids are

  724. doing what.

  725. And then the men

  726. fall along behind

  727. them and they're

  728. talking about the

  729. cotton ball or more

  730. revelant things like

  731. bow hunting.

  732. And so they're all

  733. kind of distracted.

  734. And initially they do

  735. not notice, you see,

  736. that Jesus is missing.

  737. But then there's an

  738. additional complication

  739. with respect to his age.

  740. In verse 42, Luke

  741. informs us that Jesus

  742. is 12 years old.

  743. And that's very

  744. significant.

  745. You see, at the age of

  746. 13, a Jewish boy at this

  747. time becomes a bar mitzvah,

  748. a son of the commandment.

  749. Literally, that's what it

  750. means.

  751. And so the age of 13 is

  752. when a Jewish boy is

  753. recognized then as an

  754. adult member of the

  755. community.

  756. It's when he is accepted

  757. as a man, really.

  758. And so you can imagine

  759. the scenario then.

  760. You can perceive what

  761. might be going on.

  762. Here's Jesus.

  763. He's 12 years old.

  764. He's walking along in

  765. the caravan.

  766. What is Joseph thinking?

  767. Well, he's 12 years old.

  768. He's up front with the

  769. youth group.

  770. He's having a good time

  771. with his friends.

  772. And then Mary is

  773. somewhere along in the

  774. middle of this cluster.

  775. And she's thinking, well,

  776. Jesus is almost 12.

  777. He wants to assert his

  778. manhood.

  779. He wants to be respected.

  780. He wants to be viewed as an

  781. adult in the eyes of the

  782. man.

  783. He's back there with

  784. Joseph with the men

  785. somewhere and back.

  786. And so there's all this

  787. commotion going on as well.

  788. There's all these people.

  789. And so Jesus is initially

  790. overlooked accidentally

  791. at first.

  792. And then upon realization

  793. that they cannot find him,

  794. that he is not in the group,

  795. they begin this frantic search

  796. which ultimately leads them

  797. back to Jerusalem, you see,

  798. because Jesus is missing.

  799. And of course, we could stop

  800. here and apply the passage.

  801. We shouldn't take the time,

  802. but this happens so often

  803. to so many folk in churches

  804. today.

  805. Fine Christians,

  806. they assume that they are

  807. so close to Jesus,

  808. they presume that he is so near,

  809. they are so intimate,

  810. and they go merrily along

  811. in life one day

  812. and realize

  813. Jesus is not near them.

  814. He is distant,

  815. removed,

  816. far away.

  817. But we can't take time

  818. to dwell on that.

  819. Notice,

  820. Mary and Joseph

  821. return to Jerusalem

  822. and where do they find him?

  823. And this is tying us in

  824. to this identity

  825. and this quest

  826. that I want to pursue.

  827. Verse 46,

  828. we read,

  829. After three days

  830. they found him

  831. in the temple

  832. sitting

  833. among the teachers.

  834. Now, beloved,

  835. we should not think

  836. these are our wonderful

  837. teachers

  838. and the preliminary

  839. educations

  840. that we enjoyed

  841. from high school,

  842. our math teachers,

  843. our English teachers.

  844. These are the experts

  845. in the Scripture.

  846. and I love

  847. the rendering

  848. that the King James gives

  849. and I would not at all

  850. want you to think

  851. I'm one of these

  852. King James only people.

  853. I used to despise

  854. the translation

  855. in my youth.

  856. I just thought it was archaic.

  857. It's what my grandfather prayed.

  858. It just didn't even make sense.

  859. And now in my middle years

  860. I've come to enjoy

  861. the Old English

  862. a little bit more

  863. just because the majesty

  864. and the formality

  865. and the reverence.

  866. And the King James

  867. translates that he was

  868. sitting among

  869. the doctors.

  870. The doctors

  871. of the church.

  872. And so here is Jesus,

  873. you see,

  874. he is with the faculty

  875. of the departments

  876. of theology,

  877. the doctors of the church,

  878. doctor so-and-so

  879. and doctor this.

  880. He is sitting there

  881. with the chairs

  882. of theology

  883. from Heidelberg

  884. and to begin

  885. and Harvard,

  886. etc.

  887. And this is where

  888. Jesus' parents find Him.

  889. He is at the temple,

  890. you see,

  891. with the theologians.

  892. And notice what He is doing there

  893. in verse 46.

  894. After three days

  895. they found Him

  896. in the temple,

  897. He is sitting

  898. among the teachers.

  899. And I confess

  900. that this initially

  901. might seem insignificant.

  902. But it's important

  903. to realize

  904. that at this time

  905. in the history

  906. of the world

  907. and particularly

  908. in this region,

  909. of the globe,

  910. the great teachers

  911. sit down

  912. to teach.

  913. Even before Christ,

  914. among your philosophers

  915. in the Greek world,

  916. whoever your favorite

  917. philosopher is to read,

  918. Thales and Eximines

  919. and Eximander,

  920. Heraclitus,

  921. Pythagoras,

  922. Socrates,

  923. Plato,

  924. Aristotle,

  925. all of these guys

  926. before Christ

  927. sit down

  928. to teach.

  929. And so does Jesus.

  930. You might remember

  931. Sermon on the Mount.

  932. What does Matthew record?

  933. Matthew chapter 5,

    Matthew 5:1

  934. verse 1.

  935. He went up

  936. on the mountainside,

  937. called His disciples

  938. to Himself,

  939. and He sat down

  940. and began

  941. to teach

  942. them.

  943. in His earthly ministry,

  944. Jesus sits

  945. to teach.

  946. Now incidentally,

  947. just in case you're curious,

  948. this all changed

  949. in the 4th century.

  950. John Chrysostom,

  951. he was the pastor

  952. of the largest church

  953. in Christendom,

  954. St. Sophia's Cathedral,

  955. in what was formerly known

  956. as Constantinople,

  957. but is now

  958. Istanbul,

  959. Turkey,

  960. a former Christian sanctuary,

  961. now converted

  962. to a Muslim mosque,

  963. preview of the upcoming

  964. attraction

  965. in all of our sanctuaries.

  966. It's what exists

  967. in Aberdeen,

  968. Scotland today.

  969. We won't go into that.

  970. And because

  971. of the bad acoustics

  972. in this magnificent

  973. cathedral

  974. in which John Chrysostom,

  975. the golden mouth,

  976. preached

  977. to the crowds

  978. overflowing,

  979. because the poor acoustics

  980. in the cathedral,

  981. Chrysostom,

  982. at that point,

  983. began to stand up

  984. to teach,

  985. and thereafter

  986. it became tradition

  987. in Western civilization.

  988. Within Christendom,

  989. pastors began

  990. to stand

  991. to teach.

  992. And I don't think

  993. that it all implies

  994. we need to start a crusade

  995. to go back

  996. to sitting and teaching,

  997. but that's just

  998. the historical matter.

  999. But here's Jesus,

  1000. you see,

  1001. in the Gospels,

  1002. and he sits down

  1003. to teach.

  1004. And again,

1005. notice where he is sitting.

  1006. In verse 46,

  1007. the text says

  1008. he's sitting

  1009. among the teachers.

  1010. Another translation

  1011. says he's sitting

  1012. in the midst.

  1013. He's in the midst,

  1014. you see,

  1015. because he is

  1016. in the middle

  1017. of the teachers.

  1018. Jesus here

  1019. is the center

  1020. of attention.

  1021. Now, you can read

  1022. some fine commentators

  1023. and they say,

  1024. well, look,

  1025. you shouldn't make

  1026. too much of this,

1027. but I think that is

  1028. the exact reason

  1029. that Luke records it.

  1030. And so notice now

  1031. the situation

  1032. I'm trying to draw

  1033. for you.

  1034. We have the great

  1035. theologians

  1036. of the Jerusalem Temple

  1037. and they are

  1038. in session.

  1039. Kind of like

  1040. the American Academy

  1041. of Religion,

  1042. maybe as we have

  1043. in Britain,

  1044. the Queen Society

  1045. for the Study

  1046. of Theology,

  1047. etc.

  1048. And that's the situation.

  1049. These great theologians

  1050. are in session

  1051. and a little boy

  1052. walks over

  1053. to the back edge

  1054. of the class

  1055. and sits there

  1056. quietly.

  1057. And as the lecture

  1058. continues,

  1059. he leans over

  1060. to the nearest professor

  1061. and he comments

  1062. on the lecture.

  1063. And these two

  1064. begin to talk

  1065. and then another

  1066. professor nearby

  1067. overhears their conversation,

  1068. perhaps unintentionally

  1069. at first,

1070. but he begins to listen

1071. to what they are discussing

  1072. and he's drawn in

1073. to what they are talking about

  1074. and he nudges

  1075. the nearest professor

  1076. to him

  1077. and he points

  1078. to the boy.

  1079. And so it continues

  1080. and everyone

  1081. is looking

  1082. and staring

  1083. at the boy

  1084. and they are fixated

  1085. on the boy

1086. and then one by one

  1087. everyone stops

  1088. and is silent

  1089. and they're looking

  1090. at the boy.

  1091. And so I'm reminded

  1092. of the old

  1093. and I'm dating myself

  1094. of the old

  1095. EF Hutton commercial.

  1096. Perhaps some of you

  1097. remember it.

  1098. Maybe some of you

  1099. young adults

  1100. don't even know it.

  1101. You can Google it.

  1102. It's a brilliant

  1103. marketing strategy.

  1104. So here we are

  1105. in this restaurant

  1106. and it is noisy

  1107. and we're trying

  1108. to listen

  1109. as the camera

  1110. zooms in

  1111. onto a particular

  1112. table in the corner.

  1113. We're trying to listen

  1114. to the conversation

  1115. between these two

  1116. dialogue partners,

  1117. right?

1118. But we can't hear them

  1119. because the restaurant

  1120. is so noisy.

  1121. There's this clamor

  1122. of noise

  1123. in the background

  1124. with multiple

  1125. and various conversations

  1126. going in

  1127. and perhaps the camera

  1128. zooms in

  1129. to the wait staff

  1130. that's just dropped

  1131. a glass

  1132. and so you hear

  1133. the shattering

  1134. of glass

  1135. and then you notice

  1136. that someone

  1137. is cutting meat

  1138. on their plate

  1139. and there's that

  1140. scraping sound

  1141. and so there's

  1142. all this noise

  1143. in the background

  1144. but we're trying

  1145. and straining

  1146. to listen

  1147. to what these two

  1148. are discussing

  1149. and then one

  1150. of them drops

  1151. the name

  1152. E.F. Hutton

  1153. and the restaurant

  1154. is silenced.

  1155. Right?

  1156. Because everyone

  1157. is straining

  1158. to hear what

  1159. E.F. Hutton

  1160. the financial broker

  1161. has to say

  1162. about where

  1163. you should invest

  1164. your money

  1165. and you can hear

  1166. a pin drop

  1167. in the restaurant.

  1168. And I don't think

  1169. that that is dissimilar

  1170. to the situation

  1171. that we have here

  1172. in the temple.

  1173. Everyone

  1174. is straining

  1175. to hear

  1176. the boy

  1177. one by one.

  1178. They stop talking

  1179. and they look over

  1180. at this lad

  1181. and all eyes

  1182. are glued on him

  1183. and they are fixated

  1184. and they're straining

1185. to hear what he has to say

  1186. and so notice now

  1187. the scene.

  1188. Here is this boy

  1189. in the middle

  1190. of the theologians

  1191. and he is sitting

  1192. which means

  1193. that the boy

  1194. now is the

  1195. great professor

  1196. and the professors

  1197. around him

  1198. are the students.

  1199. And this is verified

  1200. in what follows.

  1201. It's very important.

  1202. Notice in verse 46

  1203. again we read

  1204. after three days

  1205. they found him

  1206. in the temple

  1207. sitting among

  1208. the teachers

  1209. listening to them

  1210. and asking

  1211. them

  1212. the questions.

  1213. Jesus is asking

  1214. the questions

  1215. and giving

  1216. the answers

  1217. but it's important

  1218. to notice

  1219. that he is asking

  1220. the questions

  1221. which does not

  1222. at all imply

  1223. that we have

  1224. the case

  1225. of this naive

  1226. incompetent

  1227. ignorant

  1228. little boy

  1229. he doesn't know

  1230. so he's asking

  1231. the questions

  1232. because he's so curious

  1233. but rather

  1234. it is exactly

  1235. what we see

  1236. throughout

  1237. Christ's

  1238. earthly ministry

  1239. right?

  1240. Over and over

  1241. and over again

  1242. we see

  1243. Christ controlling

  1244. the conversation

  1245. by asking

  1246. the questions

  1247. time and time

  1248. again

  1249. you remember

  1250. he is attacked

  1251. he is accused

  1252. he is questioned

  1253. he's questioned

  1254. and he turns

  1255. the tables

  1256. and he responds

  1257. and he puts

  1258. the counter question

  1259. Jesus refuses

  1260. to allow

  1261. these

  1262. unbelieving

  1263. presumptions

  1264. control the

  1265. conversation

  1266. he will not

  1267. allow it

  1268. so he turns

  1269. the table

  1270. and controls

  1271. the conversation

  1272. by asking

  1273. the questions

  1274. good teacher

  1275. what must I do

  1276. to inherit

  1277. eternal life?

  1278. what does

  1279. the law

  1280. say to you?

  1281. in trying

  1282. to entrap him

  1283. teacher

  1284. do we have

  1285. to pay

  1286. taxes

  1287. to Caesar

  1288. whose inscription

  1289. is upon

  1290. the coin?

  1291. by what

  1292. authority

  1293. do you do

  1294. these things?

  1295. well I'll tell

  1296. you

  1297. John's baptism

  1298. from whence

  1299. did it come?

  1300. from heaven

  1301. or from men?

  1302. on and on

  1303. and on

  1304. attacking him

  1305. again

  1306. well then why

  1307. did David

  1308. say

  1309. the Lord

  1310. said to my

  1311. Lord

  1312. sit at my

  1313. right hand

  1314. till I make

  1315. your enemies

  1316. a footstool

  1317. for your feet

  1318. if David

  1319. is calling

  1320. him his

  1321. Lord

  1322. then in

  1323. what sense

  1324. is his

  1325. son?

  1326. over

  1327. and over

  1328. and over

  1329. again

  1330. Jesus will

  1331. not allow

  1332. the dialogue

  1333. to be framed

  1334. by these

  1335. unbelieving

  1336. presuppositions

  1337. but rather

  1338. he takes

  1339. control

  1340. of the

  1341. conversation

  1342. and he

  1343. turns the

  1344. tables

  1345. and he

  1346. puts the

  1347. counter question

  1348. and he

  1349. teaches

  1350. and he

  1351. forces people

  1352. to come up

  1353. to the

  1354. conclusions

  1355. that he

  1356. wants them

  1357. to reach

  1358. by asking

  1359. the questions

  1360. and so

  1361. it is

  1362. here

  1363. again

  1364. Jesus

  1365. you see

  1366. is sitting

  1367. and he's

  1368. asking the

  1369. questions

  1370. they don't

  1371. have the

  1372. answers

  1373. and so

  1374. he's

  1375. answering

  1376. them

  1377. for them

  1378. and notice

  1379. then the

  1380. reaction

  1381. of the

  1382. professors

  1383. in verse

  1384. 47

  1385. everyone

  1386. who heard

  1387. him

  1388. was

  1389. amazed

  1390. dumbfounded

  1391. shocked

  1392. stunned

  1393. speechless

  1394. not

  1395. because

  1396. he's

  1397. a mere

  1398. lad

  1399. but notice

  1400. they are

  1401. amazed

  1402. at his

  1403. understanding

  1404. and that

  1405. is the

  1406. issue

  1407. this

  1408. colossal

  1409. understanding

  1410. that he

  1411. possesses

  1412. which would

  1413. be

  1414. extraordinary

  1415. for

  1416. anyone

  1417. this

  1418. unfathomable

  1419. knowledge

  1420. that the

  1421. boy

  1422. possesses

  1423. this

  1424. vast

  1425. comprehension

  1426. you see

  1427. his

  1428. profound

  1429. grasp

  1430. of reality

  1431. and that

  1432. is the

  1433. issue

  1434. you see

  1435. they are

  1436. amazed

  1437. because he

  1438. is leading

  1439. them along

  1440. in this

  1441. discussion

  1442. asking

  1443. them

  1444. the kinds

  1445. of questions

  1446. that makes

  1447. a person's

  1448. heart

  1449. skip

  1450. a beat

  1451. especially

  1452. for these

  1453. men

  1454. imagine

  1455. here's

  1456. this boy

  1457. in the

  1458. temple

  1459. and he

  1460. might ask

  1461. what is

  1462. the temple

  1463. for

  1464. what does

  1465. the temple

  1466. symbolize

  1467. oh

  1468. God's

  1469. dwelling

  1470. place

  1471. here on

  1472. earth

  1473. well then

  1474. what would

  1475. be

  1476. existentially

  1477. greater

  1478. for God

  1479. to dwell

  1480. among men

  1481. symbolically

  1482. in a

  1483. break

  1484. building

  1485. or for

  1486. God

  1487. to dwell

  1488. among

  1489. men

  1490. in the

  1491. flesh

  1492. and then

  1493. why the

  1494. continual

  1495. sacrifice

  1496. look at

  1497. the

  1498. worshipers

  1499. bringing

  1500. in

  1501. lambs

  1502. and goats

  1503. it's

  1504. unending

  1505. it is

  1506. repetitive

  1507. it is

  1508. continual

  1509. why does

  1510. this go

  1511. on

  1512. and on

  1513. would it

  1514. not be

  1515. better

  1516. if there

  1517. were one

  1518. lamb

  1519. of God

  1520. that would

  1521. take away

  1522. sacrifice

  1523. forever

  1524. that would

  1525. abrogate

  1526. sacrifice

  1527. and end it

  1528. once and for

  1529. all so that

  1530. it could be

  1531. publicly

  1532. declared

  1533. it is

  1534. finished

  1535. it is

  1536. over

  1537. the

  1538. sacrificial

  1539. system

  1540. has

  1541. ended

  1542. or what

  1543. did the

  1544. prophets

  1545. say about

  1546. the

  1547. Messiah

  1548. when

  1549. will he

  1550. come

  1551. is not

  1552. the time

  1553. drawing

  1554. nigh

  1555. and then

  1556. how

  1557. will he

  1558. come

  1559. in what

  1560. manner

  1561. do you

  1562. really

  1563. think

  1564. that he'll

  1565. come

  1566. riding

  1567. on a

  1568. war

  1569. horse

  1570. to

  1571. overthrow

  1572. the

  1573. Roman

  1574. army

  1575. or

  1576. rather

  1577. will he

  1578. arrive

  1579. as a

  1580. man

  1581. of

  1582. sorrows

  1583. and

  1584. acquainted

  1585. with

  1586. grief

  1587. and like

  1588. one

  1589. from

  1590. whom

  1591. men

  1592. hide

  1593. their

  1594. face

  1595. that

  1596. he

  1597. would

  1598. be

  1599. despised

  1600. and esteem

  1601. not

  1602. and they

  1603. are

  1604. amazed

  1605. at his

  1606. understanding

  1607. and so

  1608. you could

  1609. probably

  1610. already

  1611. connect

  1612. the dots

  1613. and see

  1614. why Luke

  1615. includes

  1616. this in

  1617. his gospel

  1618. remember

  1619. the context

  1620. to whom

  1621. does Luke

  1622. write

  1623. flip over

  1624. a page

  1625. two pages

  1626. notice chapter

  1627. one

  1628. verse

  1629. three

  1630. it seemed

  1631. good to me

  1632. also

  1633. having

  1634. followed

  1635. all these

  1636. things

  1637. closely

  1638. for some

  1639. time

  1640. past

  1641. to write

  1642. an orderly

  1643. account

  1644. for you

  1645. most

  1646. excellent

  1647. who

  1648. Theophilus

  1649. we don't

  1650. have time

  1651. to dig

  1652. into the

  1653. title

  1654. but

  1655. Theophilus

  1656. is a

  1657. high ranking

  1658. official

  1659. in the

  1660. Roman

  1661. Empire

  1662. arguably

  1663. a Roman

  1664. governor

  1665. not in

  1666. Palestine

  1667. that's

  1668. why Luke

  1669. goes to

  1670. Palestine

  1671. to do

  1672. the research

  1673. on the

  1674. behalf

  1675. of Theophilus

  1676. about which

  1677. after he

  1678. accumulates

  1679. it he

  1680. writes the

  1681. man two

  1682. different

  1683. volumes

  1684. this gospel

  1685. and the

  1686. book of

  1687. Acts

  1688. both

  1689. dedicated

  1690. to this

  1691. one man

  1692. that nobody

  1693. knows

  1694. about

  1695. to which

  1696. these

  1697. works

  1698. given to

  1699. him

  1700. consist of

  1701. over more

  1702. than a

  1703. third

  1704. of the

  1705. New

  1706. Testament

  1707. and so

  1708. Luke is

  1709. well connected

  1710. and he's

  1711. writing and

  1712. researching the

  1713. account of this

  1714. historical man

  1715. on behalf

  1716. of Theophilus

  1717. you see

  1718. Theophilus

  1719. is a man

  1720. that is on the

  1721. edge of

  1722. faith

  1723. or he might

  1724. be in the

  1725. faith but he's

  1726. had his world

  1727. rocked because

  1728. he's all of a

  1729. sudden been

  1730. introduced to

  1731. all these

  1732. accusations

  1733. about Jesus

  1734. that Jesus

  1735. was against

  1736. you see the

  1737. Old Testament

  1738. religion

  1739. he was on

  1740. trial for

  1741. teaching against

  1742. the law of

  1743. Moses and

  1744. the Jewish

  1745. religion but

  1746. now Theophilus

  1747. has the other

  1748. side of the

  1749. story now

  1750. he can see

  1751. through all the

  1752. rhetoric and

  1753. the propaganda

  1754. and the

  1755. political spin

  1756. Jesus was

  1757. not against

  1758. the Old

  1759. Testament

  1760. notice here

  1761. he is in

  1762. the temple

  1763. rather Jesus

  1764. is the

  1765. fulfillment of

  1766. the Old

  1767. Testament and

  1768. the temple

  1769. system destroy

  1770. this temple

  1771. I'll raise it

  1772. up again in

  1773. three days

  1774. you see and

  1775. therefore Jesus

  1776. studies the

  1777. Old Testament

  1778. scriptures and

  1779. he masters them

  1780. at the earliest

  1781. conceivable age

  1782. because the Old

  1783. Testament points

  1784. to him it is

  1785. about him it is

  1786. fulfilled in

  1787. him and

  1788. perhaps then

  1789. we can see

  1790. why they

  1791. hated him

  1792. so much

  1793. in his

  1794. earthly

  1795. ministry

  1796. because when

  1797. he is a

  1798. twelve year

  1799. old boy he

  1800. amazes them

  1801. and staggers

  1802. them and

  1803. forces them to

  1804. deal with

  1805. conclusions they

  1806. cannot cope

  1807. with and he

  1808. questions them

  1809. and he

  1810. questions them

  1811. but again they

  1812. cannot cope

  1813. with it but

  1814. at that point

  1815. you see he's

  1816. a twelve year

  1817. old child they

  1818. can pat him on

  1819. the head and

  1820. push him away

  1821. with his mommy

  1822. but eighteen

  1823. years later the

  1824. same Nazarene

  1825. shows up to

  1826. the same temple

  1827. asking the same

  1828. questions to the

  1829. same teachers and

  1830. again they cannot

  1831. cope with the

  1832. conclusions that he

  1833. is forcing them to

  1834. arrive at but this

  1835. time you see things

  1836. are different this

  1837. time he's no

  1838. child and so this

  1839. time they crucify

  1840. him

  1841. but this is where

  1842. Mary and

  1843. Joseph find him

  1844. in the temple

  1845. which then leads

  1846. us to the

  1847. most important

  1848. discovery about

  1849. the true identity

  1850. of the historical

  1851. Jesus of Nazareth

  1852. and it's embedded

  1853. here in this

  1854. dialogue between

  1855. the boy and his

  1856. mother notice

  1857. verse 48 they

  1858. were astonished

  1859. when they found

  1860. him there and

  1861. what does Mary

  1862. ask son why have

  1863. you treated us

  1864. so another

  1865. translation reads

  1866. son why have

  1867. you treated us

  1868. like this and

  1869. what does the text

1870. go on to say you

  1871. see we have we

  1872. have we have been

  1873. searching for you

  1874. in great distress

  1875. the NIV reads we've

  1876. been searching for

  1877. you in great anxiety

  1878. the Greek text reads

  1879. we have been

  1880. searching for you in

  1881. pain you have

  1882. caused us all this

  1883. pain this heartache

  1884. we were traumatized

1885. we did not know what

  1886. happened to you we

  1887. had thought perhaps

  1888. you were abducted or

1889. you were dead in a

  1890. ditch or in the

  1891. street we did not

  1892. know and you've

  1893. caused us all this

  1894. pain and and why

  1895. have you treated us

  1896. like this

  1897. in her statement

  1898. you see is pregnant

  1899. with accusation

  1900. that he has

  1901. mistreated them

1902. you see that he has

  1903. been disrespectful

  1904. disobedient

  1905. insubordinate

  1906. inconsiderate

1907. and so here you have

  1908. the young mother

  1909. of a young child

  1910. that is emotionally

  1911. exhausted

  1912. physically spent

  1913. has not slept

  1914. in three nights

  1915. traumatized

  1916. worried to death

  1917. over her child

  1918. in a panic

  1919. and now she finds

  1920. them

  1921. first sensation

  1922. is instant relief

  1923. and it's transformed

  1924. into anger

  1925. and she unloads

  1926. not that I've ever

  1927. witnessed this

  1928. I've never seen a

  1929. young mother go

  1930. ballistic on a child

  1931. but

  1932. I'm assuming

  1933. that is the case

  1934. here

  1935. and so again

  1936. Jesus would not

  1937. allow

  1938. the conversation

  1939. to be controlled

  1940. by unbelieving

  1941. presuppositions

  1942. and so he

  1943. he gains control

  1944. of the conversation

  1945. by the counter

  1946. question

  1947. why

  1948. were you

  1949. searching for me

  1950. and then another

  1951. question

  1952. but first let's

  1953. pause

  1954. and let me forewarn

  1955. the students here

  1956. what we have

  1957. in the text

  1958. you should not

  1959. try at home

  1960. it is very dangerous

  1961. it could bring

  1962. great bodily harm

  1963. upon yourself

  1964. because here

  1965. Jesus

  1966. rebukes

  1967. his mother

  1968. he corrects

  1969. very respectfully

  1970. and of course

  1971. sinlessly

  1972. praise be to God

  1973. he kept the fifth

  1974. commandment

  1975. to honor your father

  1976. and your mother

  1977. for me

  1978. since I did

  1979. but he kept

  1980. the commandment

  1981. for me

  1982. to earn righteousness

  1983. for me

  1984. for you

  1985. for us

  1986. and he pushes

  1987. back

  1988. very respectfully

  1989. and here

  1990. he speaks

  1991. to her

  1992. not as her

  1993. son

  1994. but as her

  1995. savior

  1996. and he asked

  1997. didn't you know

1998. that I had to be

  1999. in my father's

  2000. house

  2001. now notice

  2002. the exchange

  2003. Mary

  2004. says

  2005. didn't you know

  2006. that your father

  2007. and I have been

  2008. anxiously searching

  2009. for you

  2010. searching for you

  2011. in pain

  2012. searching for you

  2013. in distress

  2014. whatever your

  2015. favorite translation

  2016. didn't you know

  2017. that your father

  2018. and I have been

  2019. doing this

  2020. and to whom

  2021. is Mary referring

  2022. who's been with her

  2023. searching the city

  2024. streets in the

  2025. darkness of Jerusalem

  2026. Joseph

  2027. Jesus responds

  2028. with a counter

  2029. question

  2030. didn't you know

2031. that I had to be

  2032. in my father's

  2033. house

  2034. and where are they

  2035. in the house

  2036. of the

  2037. Lord

  2038. the house

  2039. of

  2040. Yahweh

  2041. who brought

  2042. everything

  2043. into being

  2044. out of nothing

  2045. by the power

  2046. of his word

  2047. the one

  2048. who sits

  2049. enthroned

  2050. above the

  2051. heavens

  2052. and the

  2053. earth

  2054. and so

  2055. that

  2056. the earth

  2057. is his

  2058. footstool

  2059. the stars

  2060. are mere dust

  2061. at his feet

  2062. this is the one

  2063. about whom

  2064. we are speaking

  2065. this is the one

  2066. to whom

  2067. Jesus is referring

  2068. he is in

  2069. Yahweh's house

  2070. didn't you know

2071. that I had to be

  2072. in my father's

  2073. house

  2074. i.e.

  2075. I am

  2076. the

  2077. son

  2078. of

  2079. God

  2080. and so

  2081. beloved

  2082. what I want

  2083. you to see

  2084. is here

  2085. we have

  2086. an

  2087. unmistakable

  2088. undeniable

  2089. unequivocal

  2090. claim

  2091. to deity

  2092. upon the

  2093. part

  2094. of a

  2095. twelve

  2096. year

  2097. old

  2098. boy

  2099. you see

  2100. even at the

  2101. earliest age

  2102. of twelve

  2103. years old

  2104. Jesus is

  2105. conscious

  2106. of who

  2107. he is

  2108. he is

  2109. he is

  2110. self-aware

  2111. of his

  2112. own

  2113. identity

  2114. and so

  2115. it is

  2116. exactly

  2117. not like

  2118. the liberal

  2119. theologians

  2120. would have

  2121. us to

  2122. believe

  2123. that

  2124. well here

  2125. is this

  2126. this lonely

  2127. carpenter

  2128. up in

  2129. Nazareth

  2130. and he

  2131. bumped his

  2132. head

  2133. in the

  2134. carpentry

  2135. shop

  2136. and he

  2137. experienced

  2138. some kind

  2139. of brain

  2140. trauma

  2141. and so

  2142. whenever

  2143. he

  2144. revived

  2145. from his

  2146. unconsciousness

  2147. then

  2148. he

  2149. had this

  2150. schizophrenic

  2151. personality

  2152. and one

  2153. minute

  2154. maybe he

  2155. supposed

  2156. he

  2157. is

  2158. a

  2159. carpenter

  2160. and the

  2161. next

  2162. minute

  2163. he

  2164. envisioned

  2165. himself

  2166. as this

  2167. apocalyptic

  2168. leader

  2169. riding on

  2170. the clouds

  2171. of heaven

  2172. or maybe

  2173. as it is

  2174. supposed

  2175. which it

  2176. is not

  2177. like

  2178. maybe

  2179. Jesus

  2180. was just

  2181. working out

  2182. in his

  2183. hot

  2184. carpentry

  2185. shop

  2186. or was

  2187. walking

  2188. through the

  2189. wilderness

  2190. and he

  2191. had some

  2192. kind of

  2193. heat stroke

  2194. and so

  2195. he began

  2196. to hallucinate

  2197. with these

  2198. visions

  2199. and he

  2200. imagined

  2201. himself

  2202. in as

  2203. this messianic

  2204. figure

  2205. and it

  2206. is exactly

  2207. not like

  2208. we are told

  2209. to believe

  2210. that maybe

  2211. at the age

  2212. of 30

  2213. there was

  2214. this man

  2215. and he

  2216. had this

  2217. mystic

  2218. experience

  2219. and so

  2220. he felt

  2221. more than

  2222. any other

  2223. person

  2224. in the

  2225. history

  2226. of the

  2227. world

  2228. that he

  2229. was more

  2230. in touch

  2231. with the

  2232. oneness

  2233. that is

  2234. exactly

  2235. what we

  2236. don't have

  2237. you see

  2238. here in

  2239. the text

  2240. here is

  2241. this 12

  2242. year old

  2243. boy

  2244. that claims

  2245. to be

  2246. divine

  2247. and so

  2248. from the

  2249. earliest

  2250. time

  2251. of the

  2252. lad's

  2253. childhood

  2254. from his

  2255. earliest moments

  2256. of cognition

  2257. when he

  2258. could think

  2259. about himself

  2260. and this

  2261. world in which

  2262. he inhabits

  2263. from his

  2264. earliest moments

  2265. of being

  2266. self aware

  2267. that he was

  2268. breathing

  2269. and that he

  2270. had fingers

  2271. and when he

  2272. looked at

  2273. himself

  2274. this lad

  2275. was aware

  2276. of who

  2277. he is

  2278. that I

  2279. and the

  2280. father

  2281. are one

  2282. if you

  2283. have seen

  2284. me

  2285. you've

  2286. seen

  2287. the

  2288. father

  2289. and so

  2290. here we

  2291. have this

  2292. unmistakable

  2293. claim

  2294. upon the

  2295. part

  2296. of a

  2297. 12 year

  2298. old boy

  2299. that I

  2300. am the

  2301. Christ

  2302. of the

  2303. cosmos

  2304. the image

  2305. of the

  2306. invisible

  2307. God

  2308. in whom

  2309. the fullness

  2310. of deity

  2311. dwells

  2312. which then

  2313. leads us

  2314. to one

  2315. obvious

  2316. question

  2317. that we've

  2318. allowed to

  2319. remain

  2320. why the

  2321. search

  2322. why the

  2323. manhunt

  2324. he's 12

  2325. years old

  2326. he's almost

  2327. an adult

  2328. he knows

  2329. what he is

  2330. doing

  2331. he knew

  2332. everyone

  2333. was leaving

  2334. he saw

  2335. them going

  2336. to the

  2337. caravan

  2338. and he

  2339. stayed

  2340. behind

  2341. intentionally

  2342. he tarried

  2343. on purpose

  2344. for a reason

  2345. knowing good

  2346. and well

  2347. that it was

  2348. said his

  2349. parents

  2350. in a

  2351. panic

  2352. that they

  2353. would be

  2354. traumatized

  2355. and search

  2356. and all

  2357. the inconvenience

  2358. and annoyance

  2359. and trouble

  2360. and distress

  2361. and anxiety

  2362. that he would

  2363. cause

  2364. he intentionally

  2365. put them

  2366. through that

  2367. for a reason

  2368. in this

  2369. respect

  2370. I think

  2371. Kierkegaard

  2372. has something

  2373. I think

  2374. he's on

  2375. to something

  2376. to quote

  2377. him

  2378. Jesus

  2379. did this

  2380. Kierkegaard's

  2381. writing about

  2382. Jesus

  2383. he's a crazy

  2384. philosopher

  2385. but with that

  2386. aside

  2387. he's writing

  2388. about Jesus

  2389. remember all

  2390. the messianic

  2391. secrets

  2392. Jesus healed

  2393. someone

  2394. don't tell

  2395. anybody

  2396. the crowd

  2397. show up

  2398. he withdraws

  2399. why

  2400. and Kierkegaard

  2401. writes

  2402. to release

  2403. the infinite

  2404. passion

  2405. of inwardness

  2406. to release

  2407. the infinite

  2408. passion

  2409. of inwardness

  2410. in other words

  2411. to trigger

  2412. within a person

  2413. to excite

  2414. to stimulate

  2415. within a person

  2416. this infinitely

  2417. passionate

  2418. desire

  2419. for Christ

  2420. and Kierkegaard

  2421. even likens

  2422. it under

  2423. these lovers

  2424. this guy

  2425. is really

  2426. into this girl

  2427. these young

  2428. children

  2429. these adolescents

  2430. and so she

  2431. plays hard

  2432. to get

  2433. to all the

  2434. more

  2435. make him

  2436. that much

  2437. more crazy

  2438. about her

  2439. so that he

  2440. would pursue

  2441. her

  2442. with all the

  2443. more zeal

  2444. and zest

  2445. and so it's

  2446. to release

  2447. this infinite

  2448. passion

  2449. of inwardness

  2450. to trigger

  2451. this incredibly

  2452. intense

  2453. longing

  2454. for Christ

  2455. this relentless

  2456. yearning

  2457. this burning

  2458. thirst

  2459. this craving

  2460. for Christ

  2461. that will forever

  2462. remain

  2463. unsatisfied

  2464. unquenched

  2465. until one

  2466. begins the quest

  2467. therefore

  2468. to find him

  2469. and that in

  2470. finding him

  2471. he reveals

  2472. himself

  2473. to them

  2474. in a way

  2475. that they

  2476. will never

  2477. forget

  2478. and so it

  2479. is

  2480. here is

  2481. Jesus

  2482. you see

  2483. he's 12

  2484. years old

  2485. and he

  2486. knows

  2487. that his

  2488. time

  2489. is coming

  2490. and so he

  2491. lingers

  2492. in Jerusalem

  2493. to initiate

  2494. this request

  2495. this quest

  2496. for his

  2497. parents

  2498. that they

  2499. might

  2500. search

  2501. for him

  2502. and find

  2503. him

  2504. personally

  2505. for themselves

  2506. that he

  2507. might reveal

  2508. unto them

  2509. who he

  2510. is

  2511. and that he

  2512. knows

  2513. his own

  2514. identity

  2515. didn't you

  2516. know

  2517. that I

  2518. had to be

  2519. in my

  2520. father's

  2521. house

  2522. don't you

  2523. remember

  2524. the mysterious

  2525. birth

  2526. Mary

  2527. don't you

  2528. remember

  2529. what the

  2530. angels

  2531. said

  2532. that the

  2533. most high

  2534. will

  2535. overshadow

  2536. you

  2537. so that

  2538. the holy

  2539. one

  2540. will be

  2541. born

  2542. to you

  2543. will be

  2544. called

  2545. the son

  2546. of God

  2547. Joseph

  2548. don't you

  2549. remember

  2550. what the

  2551. angels

  2552. said to

  2553. you

  2554. that you'll

  2555. call his

  2556. name

  2557. Jesus

  2558. for he

  2559. will save

  2560. his people

  2561. from their

  2562. sins

  2563. in order

  2564. that what was

  2565. spoken through

  2566. the prophet

  2567. might be

  2568. fulfilled

  2569. that a

  2570. virgin

  2571. will conceive

  2572. and bear a

  2573. son and you

  2574. shall name him

  2575. Emmanuel

  2576. God

  2577. with us

  2578. didn't you

  2579. know

  2580. that I

  2581. had to be

  2582. in my

  2583. father's

  2584. house

  2585. and so

  2586. he initiates

  2587. then this

  2588. quest

  2589. that they

  2590. might search

  2591. for him

  2592. and find

  2593. them

  2594. and so

  2595. I submit

  2596. to you

  2597. the quest

  2598. for the

  2599. historical

  2600. Jesus

  2601. begun by

  2602. Mary

  2603. and Joseph

  2604. continues

  2605. today

  2606. with liberal

  2607. scholars

  2608. and enlightenment

  2609. philosophers

  2610. and da

  2611. vinci code

  2612. detectives

  2613. but they

  2614. will ever

  2615. search in

  2616. vain

  2617. because they

  2618. search in

  2619. the ghetto

  2620. of enlightenment

  2621. ideology

  2622. and they

  2623. search in

  2624. the intellectual

  2625. prison

  2626. of atheism

  2627. and yet the

  2628. only place

  2629. on earth

  2630. where he

  2631. can be

  2632. found as

  2633. a 12

  2634. year old

  2635. child

  2636. you see

  2637. is here

  2638. in the

  2639. temple

  2640. didn't you

  2641. know

  2642. that I

  2643. had to

  2644. be

  2645. in my

  2646. father's

  2647. house

  2648. didn't you

  2649. know

  2650. didn't I

  2651. know

  2652. didn't the

  2653. world know

  2654. that he

  2655. had to be

  2656. in his

  2657. father's

  2658. house

  2659. and to

  2660. God alone

  2661. be

  2662. glory

  2663. let's

  2664. pray

  2665. father we

  2666. do come

  2667. before you

  2668. and beg of

  2669. you kind

  2670. sir

  2671. that by the

  2672. spirit that

  2673. you would

  2674. initiate

  2675. within our

  2676. hearts

  2677. this infinite

  2678. passion of

  2679. inwardness

  2680. that we

  2681. might look

  2682. for Christ

  2683. and search

  2684. for him

  2685. trust

  2686. that you

  2687. have spoken

  2688. to the

  2689. prophet

  2690. that if you

  2691. search for

  2692. me

  2693. you'll find

  2694. me

  2695. when you

  2696. search for

  2697. me

  2698. with all of

  2699. your heart

  2700. and we do

  2701. pray this

  2702. again

  2703. for Christ's

  2704. sake

  2705. amen
