  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. Amen.

  4. Turn with me, if you will, to John chapter 1.

    John 1 chapter mention

  5. John 1 will be on the screen behind me or on page 886 of the Bible in the pew in front of you,

  6. if you want to follow along there.

  7. The new year is a great time to examine some of your core commitments, isn't it?

  8. Some of the values that are foundational to who you are as a person or as a church as well.

  9. It's an important thing for us corporately to do.

  10. As a church that seeks to see God's kingdom advanced,

  11. Southwood's particular mission statement is to experience and express grace.

  12. If you've been here a little while, you've probably heard or read that somewhere.

  13. We tend to talk about it quite a bit.

  14. But it's only helpful to us if we actually know what we mean.

  15. It's cute to be able to say something like that, but if you don't know what you mean,

  16. when you say it, it doesn't help you very much, does it?

  17. I mentioned earlier that next weekend is our Express Grace Conference.

  18. So the second half of Experience and Express Grace, we're going to talk a lot about next weekend

  19. to focus on what it means for us to share God's goodness with others, with those around us.

  20. But I thought this morning we would look for a few minutes at what we mean when we say experience grace,

  21. the first part of the mission statement.

  22. Experience grace.

  23. Is that something that happens in some kind of out-of-body, mountaintop experience?

  24. I have this experience of grace and I don't even know what happened.

  25. How often does it happen?

  26. How would I know if I've experienced grace?

  27. What's it all about?

  28. And there are a lot of angles we could take on that,

  29. but this morning I want to look at John 1, beginning at verse 14.

  30. And we'll read a few verses here and then talk about the experience of God's grace together

  31. from this passage and a few others as well.

  32. God's holy word in John 1,

  33. where John has up to this point introduced the word of God,

  34. who has been with God since before time began.

  35. And John says he is in fact truly God himself.

  36. Then in verse 14 he says this about the word.

  37. And the word became flesh and dwelt among us.

  38. And we have seen his glory.

  39. Glory as of the only Son from the Father,

  40. full of grace and truth.

  41. John bore witness about him and cried out,

  42. This was he of whom I said,

  43. He who comes after me ranks before me because he was before me.

  44. And from his fullness we have all received grace upon grace.

  45. For the law was given through Moses.

  46. Grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

  47. No one has ever seen God.

  48. The only God who is at the Father's side,

  49. He has made him known.

  50. Will you pray with me?

  51. Father, our desire as we have rejoiced this morning in your love for us

  52. is that we would know you more.

  53. We want to know more of who you are and what you are like,

  54. of the things that you love and the desires you have for us.

  55. And we rejoice that Jesus is the one who has made you known to us.

  56. Who has been the perfect image of God in the flesh.

  57. Who has made the Father we have not seen known to us.

  58. And so as we open your word this morning,

  59. would we see him clearly.

  60. Would we know more of who you are

  61. and of what your heart is for us from your word.

  62. Would you teach us by your spirit, we pray in Jesus' name.

  63. Amen.

  64. When I say kindness,

  65. whose face pops into your mind?

  66. Is there someone you know who oozes the sugary sweetness

  67. and you feel like when you've left a conversation with that person,

  68. you've just experienced the essence of kindness.

  69. The kindest person I've ever met.

  70. What if I said prideful?

  71. Or stuck up?

  72. Or snooty?

  73. Would you have a different face come to mind?

  74. Does somebody else pop into your head?

  75. He's everything that's wrong with people who think that they're wonderful and amazing

  76. and drive me crazy.

  77. His face pops into my mind.

  78. The essence of pride and arrogance.

  79. When we talk about grace,

  80. we don't merely mean an abstract theological concept.

  81. That something we would vaguely sense or experience in some unusual way.

  82. Rather, we're talking about a person.

  83. The word become flesh.

  84. Jesus himself.

  85. Jesus is described here in verse 14 as full of grace and truth.

  86. And he's so full of grace that from his fullness,

  87. the very essence of who he is and his character,

  88. overflows to us what?

  89. Grace upon grace.

  90. Like they were just singing for us.

  91. From who Jesus is, that's what oozes out of him.

  92. Another version translates this verse.

  93. Grace upon grace.

  94. From the fullness of his grace,

  95. we have all received one blessing after another.

  96. One blessing after another.

  97. Grace upon grace from Jesus.

  98. In fact, the grace of God in the flesh, right?

  99. Where God gave his people the good gift of the law through Moses.

  100. Grace upon grace.

  101. And then he sent in the very person of Jesus his grace again.

  102. Grace in the flesh.

  103. Grace is God's goodness and favor that we could never deserve or earn.

  104. But that Jesus embodied and brought to us when he took on flesh.

  105. His coming to us brought grace to us.

  106. Grace.

  107. Grace.

  108. Grace.

  109. So grace then is a person.

  110. It's a person who in the first chapter of John's gospel alone,

  111. if you just read through the rest of this chapter,

  112. we find out he did many things for us that we could never deserve or earn.

  113. He brought light into our darkness.

  114. Made those of us who were God's enemies his children.

  115. That's grace.

  116. He accomplished what mankind had failed to do for centuries in living a life of obedience to God.

  117. And he also died for the sins of the world.

  118. Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world.

  119. That's grace.

  120. So when we talk about experiencing grace,

  121. it's not just some mystical intangible concept.

  122. We're talking about being near Jesus.

  123. He himself is grace.

  124. And it overflows from him to us over and over.

  125. Grace upon grace.

  126. And that's actually the idea that this passage has

  127. and that is in many other places in the Scripture.

  128. That we don't just need a quick exposure to Jesus.

  129. A one-time dose of grace that fixes us forever.

  130. However, this passage and many others teach that we live all our lives

  131. in moment-by-moment dependence on the grace of God in Jesus Christ.

  132. That's why we say our mission is to experience grace.

  133. That's where we start.

  134. Not that we would have a goal of one day, someday,

  135. maybe finally experiencing God's grace for the first time.

  136. But that every day, not just once,

  137. not once in the future, not once in the past,

  138. but every day present,

  139. I need to experience His amazing grace to me.

  140. To be overwhelmed by the kindness and favor of God

  141. poured into my life in ways I could never earn or deserve.

  142. I need to be filled and fueled by the grace of Jesus.

  143. By God's unending and undeserving love for me.

  144. That's what the Bible says it means to continue to live in Christ.

  145. Experiencing His grace.

  146. And that seems pretty simple to say

  147. that experiencing grace is just be near Jesus

  148. and grace overflows into you.

  149. Just be near Jesus.

  150. Why don't we find ourselves drinking from that fountain,

  151. so to speak, more regularly?

  152. Why is it not your experience and my experience

  153. that I'm constantly being filled up and fueled and driven

  154. and every thought shaped by the amazing love

  155. that God has for me in Jesus?

  156. Why is that not the way we live all the time?

  157. I think one primary reason

  158. is that we don't always feel and remember

  159. our need to be near Jesus.

  160. Here's a definition for experiencing grace

  161. you can write down if you want.

  162. Constant needs constantly met in Christ.

  163. It's not real complicated.

  164. I don't intend it to be profound.

  165. But think of people who clearly experience

  166. the grace of Jesus during His earthly ministry.

  167. Over and over again,

  168. these are people who have very clear needs

  169. that Jesus meets with His grace.

  170. Think of blind Bartimaeus in Mark chapter 10

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  171. who stands by the side of the road

  172. and hears Jesus is coming down the road

  173. and cries out,

  174. Son of David, have mercy on me!

  175. And Jesus stops and comes over and asks him,

  176. What do you want me to do for you?

  177. And the grace of Jesus overflows to Bartimaeus

  178. and he receives His sight, doesn't he?

  179. Think of the sinful woman in Luke 7

  180. who's so aware of her need for forgiveness

  181. that she comes to be near Jesus

  182. and sit at His feet.

  183. She does more than that.

  184. She pours expensive perfume on Him

  185. and wipes His feet with her hair

  186. as she cries over Him.

  187. And grace overflows to her

  188. as Jesus tells her what?

  189. Your sins are forgiven.

  190. Think of the paralytic in Mark chapter 2.

    Mark 2 chapter mention

  191. You may have heard the story in Sunday school.

  192. He's so desperate to be near Jesus

  193. that when he can't get in the house,

  194. what do his friends do for him?

  195. They take him outside,

  196. they climb up,

  197. cut a hole in the roof

  198. and lower him down right in front of Jesus.

  199. And the grace of Jesus overflows to him

  200. and Jesus says,

  201. your sins are forgiven

  202. and He heals His body.

  203. Constant needs,

  204. constantly met in Christ.

  205. All of these,

  206. and there are many others we could cite,

  207. all of these people

  208. are deeply aware of their need for Jesus,

  209. aren't they?

  210. They know that they need Him.

  211. They know they're desperate.

  212. A blind man,

  213. a sinful woman,

  214. a paralytic,

  215. desperate to be near Jesus.

  216. So here's the point for us.

  217. You won't experience grace

  218. to meet your needs

  219. if you don't have any.

  220. You won't experience grace

  221. to forgive your sin

  222. if you don't have any.

  223. You won't experience grace

  224. for your failures

  225. if you don't have any.

  226. You won't experience grace

  227. to give direction in your confusion

  228. if you never have any.

  229. You won't experience grace

  230. to be sufficient in your weakness

  231. if you don't have any.

  232. Do you regularly think of yourself

  233. as needy?

  234. Sinful?

  235. Confused?

  236. Weak?

  237. Is that how you think of yourself?

  238. Is your relationship with God

  239. one in which you're constantly telling Him

  240. how much you need His direction?

  241. How much you need His strength for that day?

  242. How much you need His forgiveness

  243. for your sin?

  244. God have mercy on me, a sinner.

  245. Like the tax collector

  246. praying in the temple,

  247. crying out to God

  248. and Jesus says,

  249. that man went home

  250. in a right relationship with God.

  251. That's how you relate to God.

  252. God have mercy on me, a sinner.

  253. I need your help.

  254. For many of us,

  255. that doesn't sound like our

  256. day in and day out relationship with God, does it?

  257. Doesn't sound like your prayer life

  258. constantly crying out,

  259. God have mercy on me,

  260. a sinner.

  261. I need you so desperately.

  262. I'm weak.

  263. I'm needy.

  264. I'm confused.

  265. I need you.

  266. For many of us,

  267. our day in, day out relationship with God

  268. is based on merit,

  269. worthiness,

  270. performance,

  271. strength.

  272. God was gracious to me

  273. once upon a time.

  274. I talk about grace,

  275. but now I relate to God

  276. based on how well I'm doing.

  277. God, I'm a pretty good person.

  278. I mean, I'm better than the next guy,

  279. so I expect some pretty good things to happen.

  280. God, I thank you.

  281. I'm moral and not like this other guy

  282. or these people I read about.

  283. Sounds like the Pharisee

  284. praying opposite the tax collector

  285. who says those things

  286. and Jesus says of him

  287. he had a wrong kind of relationship with God.

  288. He didn't know how to relate to God.

  289. He said,

  290. I'm more spiritual than they are.

  291. I'm more moral than she is.

  292. More faithful than he is.

  293. And Jesus said,

  294. that's not how you relate to God.

  295. Quick side note

  296. and preview of next weekend

  297. and expressing grace.

  298. When that's what our relationship with God

  299. is based on,

  300. that's what our relationship with others

  301. is based on too.

  302. Is he performing well enough

  303. to earn my favor today?

  304. Is she worthy of my love today?

  305. And if you're not experiencing grace

  306. for needy, sinful, failing,

  307. confused, weak you,

  308. you'll have no grace

  309. and very little time

  310. for the needy, sinful failures

  311. in your life.

  312. For those who are confused

  313. and weak in your circles of influence.

  314. If none of that grace

  315. is being poured into you,

  316. none of it will be overflowing

  317. to anyone around you.

  318. That's a preview of next weekend.

  319. It's a sad reality to imagine

  320. not having any grace

  321. for people like that in our lives.

  322. Nothing to pour through us

  323. and flow over into them

  324. in their great need.

  325. But perhaps if you can imagine

  326. this morning even sadder

  327. than not having grace for others

  328. is that you will not merely

  329. have missed grace.

  330. You will have missed Jesus.

  331. The grace of God

  332. expressed in a person.

  333. Jesus didn't come for the healthy

  334. who have no need of a doctor.

  335. For the successful

  336. who have no need of His strength.

  337. For those who figured it out

  338. and have no need of His wisdom.

  339. For the put together

  340. who have no need of His help.

  341. Jesus came

  342. not for those.

  343. He came for those

  344. who are poor

  345. in spirit.

  346. Who don't think

  347. they can handle life

  348. on their own.

  349. Who know how desperately

  350. they need Him.

  351. And that reality

  352. should be unsettling

  353. to those of us

  354. who largely are

  355. are part of a strong

  356. and capable

  357. and successful culture.

  358. People in a church

  359. where we can look

  360. strong and capable

  361. and successful.

  362. And the reality is

  363. that it should shake us up

  364. a little bit.

  365. Because those aren't just

  366. my words

  367. trying to make you feel bad.

  368. Those are the words of Jesus

  369. about who He came for

  370. aren't they?

  371. It's not the healthy

  372. who need a doctor

  373. but the sick.

  374. I've come not to call

  375. righteous

  376. but sinners.

  377. Jesus came for sinners.

  378. He came to save them.

  379. To rescue them.

  380. For those who know

  381. they need to experience

  382. His grace.

  383. You and I need

  384. to be near Jesus.

  385. For today we need Him.

  386. For tomorrow we need Him.

  387. For parenting we need

  388. His patience.

  389. For engaging with

  390. co-workers we need

  391. His wisdom.

  392. For relationships

  393. we need His forgiveness.

  394. For all of these things

  395. and many more

  396. we need to experience

  397. His grace.

  398. We need to be crying out to Him.

  399. Drawing near to Him

  400. in prayer, right?

  401. That's moment by moment

  402. experiencing His grace.

  403. Seeking for God

  404. to give us His sustaining

  405. and directing grace

  406. for our lives.

  407. We ought to be

  408. regularly repenting.

  409. Of our sin.

  410. Where we turn back

  411. and come near to Jesus

  412. and seek His forgiving grace.

  413. We need to be reading

  414. His word

  415. and talking about Him

  416. with our friends.

  417. Having Him near us

  418. in every aspect of life.

  419. Every relationship we have

  420. so that His overflowing grace

  421. is our greatest joy.

  422. Our highest desire.

  423. The thing that we

  424. can't stop thinking

  425. and talking about.

  426. And that would be

  427. a really good sermon

  428. especially around New Year's

  429. wouldn't it?

  430. Be near Jesus more.

  431. Read the Bible.

  432. Pray.

  433. Come to church.

  434. Have Jesus impact

  435. all of your life.

  436. And we should

  437. and all of those things

  438. are good.

  439. We need more time with Him.

  440. We need to be near Jesus.

  441. But it's even better

  442. than that.

  443. Our hope is even better

  444. and more exciting

  445. than just

  446. you need to be with Jesus

  447. more

  448. although we do.

  449. The good news is

  450. that Jesus

  451. comes to us.

  452. That's part of His

  453. overflowing grace.

  454. Is that Jesus

  455. actually comes

  456. to be near us.

  457. Have you forgotten

  458. Christmas already?

  459. Isn't that what we

  460. just celebrated?

  461. What about verse 14?

  462. What does it say?

  463. The Word became flesh

  464. and made His dwelling

  465. among us.

  466. Among needy,

  467. weak,

  468. failing people.

  469. Jesus said

  470. I will live there.

  471. I will come to them.

  472. The Word became flesh

  473. and made His dwelling

  474. among us.

  475. He wanted to get

  476. so near to us

  477. that His grace

  478. would spill onto us

  479. so that we could

  480. experience His grace.

  481. That's why He came.

  482. He wants to spill

  483. His grace onto you

  484. even more than you

  485. want to run

  486. and get it from Him.

  487. He came

  488. so that His grace

  489. would overflow

  490. to you.

  491. In Memphis

  492. where I grew up

  493. there's this

  494. wonderful place

  495. called St. Jude

  496. Children's Research Hospital.

  497. You've probably

  498. heard of it.

  499. They treat their children

  500. who are suffering

  501. with cancer.

  502. Children from all

  503. over the globe.

  504. In fact,

  505. one from our

  506. Southwood family

  507. just this past year

  508. that they took

  509. great care of.

  510. Every December

  511. there's a college

  512. football bowl game

  513. in Memphis

  514. called the Liberty Bowl.

  515. And so two teams

  516. come in,

  517. different teams

  518. each time,

  519. to play perhaps

  520. the biggest football game

  521. played in Memphis

  522. all year.

  523. And lots of kids

  524. are excited

  525. to go to the game.

  526. They want to go

  527. see their favorite

  528. players,

  529. see these two teams

  530. play football

  531. against each other.

  532. And every year,

  533. ahead of the Liberty Bowl

  534. itself,

  535. those teams

  536. would visit St. Jude

  537. and they would

  538. bring the game

  539. to the kids

  540. who were too sick

  541. to come to the game

  542. themselves.

  543. You'd always see

  544. in the paper

  545. every year

  546. a picture of the quarterback

  547. with his arm

  548. around a five-year-old

  549. bald-headed

  550. cancer

  551. patient

  552. from St. Jude.

  553. The guy who perhaps

  554. embodied the essence

  555. of football

  556. and all the excitement

  557. about this game

  558. that was coming to town

  559. in the mind

  560. of this kid

  561. actually coming

  562. to bring the experience

  563. of the Liberty Bowl

  564. into the hospital room

  565. of a young kid.

  566. And that's what Jesus

  567. has done for us.

  568. Jesus,

  569. the embodiment

  570. of grace himself,

  571. has come to you

  572. and brought grace

  573. to your hospital room

  574. that you couldn't leave

  575. because you were too sick.

  576. When you couldn't leave

  577. the shackles

  578. of what you've done,

  579. of the terrible things

  580. that rack your memories

  581. and you can't get away

  582. from them

  583. to come to Jesus,

  584. he came to you.

  585. Maybe for you

  586. it's the shackles

  587. of your own

  588. self-obsession.

  589. The success

  590. that you've experienced

  591. and you realize

  592. you only think

  593. about yourself

  594. and you can't get away

  595. from that

  596. to come

  597. and cry out to Jesus

  598. and Jesus

  599. comes to you.

  600. This table

  601. reminds us

  602. that he didn't just

  603. do that once.

  604. That he is still

  605. coming to us.

  606. That he knows

  607. we still need him.

  608. That he still needs

  609. to bring his grace

  610. to us.

  611. His grace is for you

  612. to experience again

  613. this morning.

  614. That's why he said

  615. we should do this

  616. so often.

  617. Because we continue

  618. to need him.

  619. Because we continue

  620. to need to be filled up

  621. with his grace.

  622. We declare at this table

  623. that we are still

  624. not strong enough.

  625. That we're still

  626. not smart enough.

  627. That we're still

  628. not successful enough

  629. on our own

  630. to come to Jesus.

  631. But we declare

  632. at the same time

  633. that he has come

  634. to us.

  635. And we taste

  636. as we come

  637. his grace for us again.

  638. We experience

  639. his grace

  640. again this morning.

  641. Constant needs

  642. to you and me.

  643. Constantly met

  644. in Christ.

  645. Paul tells us

  646. of the words

  647. of institution

  648. that Jesus gave

  649. on the night

  650. he was betrayed.

  651. He took bread

  652. and when he'd given

  653. thanks he broke it

  654. and said this is my body

  655. which is for you.

  656. Do this in remembrance

  657. of me.

  658. In the same way also

  659. he took the cup

  660. after supper

  661. saying this cup

  662. is the new covenant

  663. in my blood.

  664. Do this as often

  665. as you drink it

  666. in remembrance of me.

  667. For as often

  668. as you eat this bread

  669. and drink the cup

  670. you proclaim

  671. the Lord's death.

  672. until he comes.

  673. This is not the table

  674. of Southwood

  675. or the Presbyterian church.

  676. This is the Lord's table.

  677. And Jesus has

  678. set it before us

  679. this morning

  680. so that we would

  681. taste and experience

  682. his grace again.

  683. And he invites

  684. he's the one

  685. extending the invitation

  686. to you

  687. to everyone

  688. who has truly

  689. trusted in him

  690. for their salvation.

  691. who's made a public

  692. profession of that faith

  693. by joining a church

  694. a body of Christ.

  695. he invites you

  696. to come

  697. and to feast

  698. this morning.

  699. Come and eat.

  700. If you don't know him

  701. if you've never

  702. trusted Jesus

  703. for yourself

  704. don't come

  705. to this table

  706. don't come

  707. and proclaim

  708. outwardly

  709. something that's

  710. not true

  711. inwardly.

  712. Instead

  713. we would love

  714. to invite you

  715. to come

  716. and to know

  717. Jesus himself.

  718. The one who would

  719. come toward you

  720. this morning.

  721. I'd ask you

  722. to consider

  723. are you

  724. this morning

  725. okay

  726. on your own?

  727. Are you

  728. good enough?

  729. Strong enough?

  730. Wise enough?

  731. Capable enough

  732. to handle

  733. life

  734. on your own?

  735. Or

  736. do you

  737. need

  738. someone else?

  739. Do you need

  740. the help

  741. of another?

  742. Someone who would

  743. come to you

  744. and offer himself

  745. for you?

  746. Do you need

  747. his grace?

  748. Perhaps

  749. this morning

  750. what it could be

  751. is a chance

  752. to realize

  753. that you can

  754. stop exhausting

  755. yourself

  756. trying to make

  757. God happy

  758. and for the first

  759. time

  760. know that someone

  761. else has done

  762. that for you

  763. that Jesus

  764. has done that

  765. in your place

  766. and you can

  767. come near to him

  768. and experience

  769. his grace

  770. in a person

  771. in Jesus

  772. himself

  773. nothing would

  774. make us more

  775. excited than to

  776. get to talk

  777. with you about

  778. him

  779. to tell you

  780. about his

  781. grace for you

  782. let's pray

  783. and then we'll

  784. come to this

  785. table together

  786. father we

  787. thank you

  788. that you

  789. know our

  790. need

  791. we are

  792. needy

  793. people

  794. and so our

  795. hope and our

  796. joy is that

  797. our needs

  798. have been

  799. fully met

  800. in Jesus

  801. would this

  802. table be a

  803. reminder

  804. of that

  805. to us

  806. as we

  807. sit and

  808. meditate on

  809. our own

  810. need

  811. we equally

  812. and even

  813. more so

  814. see your

  815. abundant

  816. provision

  817. for that

  818. need

  819. through your

  820. son

  821. we ask in

  822. his name

  823. amen
