  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. Amen. Thank you all.

  4. There are a lot of people here this morning who've known me a long time.

  5. That's exciting and fun for me.

  6. One who's known me longer than almost all of those is my dad, who is here to open God's Word for us this morning.

  7. I got to introduce you to him this summer when he preached and told you then that he is not only the one from whom I learned what it meant to be a man and a husband and a father,

  8. but also learned of the love of God for me and of what it looks like to share that love with others.

  9. He's been my pastor since I was born. I guess it kind of works that way.

  10. And delighted that he is here to open God's Word for us this morning.

  11. Billy Spink.

  12. I always marvel at how the service fits together, and I had nothing to do with the selection of that offertory,

  13. but I think it was chosen for me.

  14. I need thee every hour, and I certainly need the Lord's help as we move forward in this service.

  15. It's a special occasion for us as a family.

  16. Many of us have gathered to celebrate with you as Will is installed here,

  17. and it's a special joy for us to be able to be together with you at Southwood today,

  18. and especially for me to be able to open God's Word to you this morning.

  19. I would invite you to turn in your Bibles or in the Pew Bible to the book of Acts chapter 20,

    Acts 20 chapter mention

  20. and I've picked somewhat of an awkward passage to use this morning,

  21. but I hope at the end of the sermon you'll realize it's not quite as awkward as it might at first appear.

  22. We are making history today, and it's a rare opportunity for us to actually say that we are a part of history.

  23. History is such a special thing, and most of it happens before our time or after our time or somewhere else,

  24. but rarely do we feel like we are actually making history.

  25. But we are.

  26. History is marked by special dates,

  27. dates that are remembered because of special occasions.

  28. Let me get some audience participation here for a moment.

  29. How many of you recognize the date October 31, 1517?

  30. October 31, 1517.

  31. That's not Halloween.

  32. That is when the Reformation was essentially started through Martin Luther's work.

  33. How about July 4, 1776?

  34. Anybody kind of recognize?

  35. Oh, yeah, I figured we'd get a few that would know that.

  36. How about in Huntsville, Alabama,

  37. the date of July 21, 1969?

  38. Ah, okay, when Neil Armstrong stepped onto the moon.

  39. How about December 2, 1972?

  40. December 2, 1972.

  41. The famous Punt Bama Punt Iron Bowl.

  42. Now, I just thrilled some of you and the rest of you have just left.

  43. September 11, 2001.

  44. We all recognize that date.

  45. February 14, 2016.

  46. February 14, 2016.

  47. A day that will go down in history,

  48. at least Southwood history,

  49. as the beginning of a new chapter

  50. in your church's ministry.

  51. Imagine you're holding in your hand a book

  52. that tells the history of Southwood Presbyterian Church.

  53. Well, today you move into a new chapter in that book.

  54. What names will be included in this chapter?

  55. What events will be described?

  56. Whose weddings or baptisms will be celebrated?

  57. Will a revival come to Southwood and to Huntsville

  58. and to this presbytery during this chapter?

  59. What staff will be added?

  60. What new faces will appear in the Southwood family portrait?

  61. What ministries will be offered to children and youth

  62. and men and women?

  63. Only God knows the answer to those questions.

  64. But isn't it exciting to think

  65. that we are on the cusp of history today?

  66. We are opening a new chapter of ministry

  67. at Southwood Presbyterian Church.

  68. Now, if you're interested in thinking about church ministry

  69. and church growth,

  70. there are lots of books waiting for your attention.

  71. Everyone seems to have his opinion about what to do

  72. and what not to do.

  73. What to sing and what not to sing.

  74. What to preach and what not to preach.

  75. Some will suggest that to reach the world,

  76. the church must be more of a reflection of the world.

  77. Others will vehemently disagree with that statement.

  78. What I would like to do this morning

  79. is let the Scriptures be our guide

  80. to the type of ministry God desires to see

  81. in the local church.

  82. This local church.

  83. Acts 20 tells the story of the church at Ephesus.

  84. The Apostle Paul had been there for three plus years.

  85. He had ministered effectively there,

  86. but compelled by the Holy Spirit,

  87. he is moving on to Jerusalem.

  88. So as he bids them farewell,

  89. he calls for the elders to gather

  90. and he shares his heart with them.

  91. And this is what happens.

  92. Acts 20 verse 17.

    Acts 20:17

  93. Now from Miletus, he sent to Ephesus

  94. and called the elders of the church to come to him.

  95. And when they came to him, he said to them,

  96. you yourselves know how I lived among you the whole time

  97. from the first day I set foot in Asia,

  98. serving the Lord with all humility

  99. and with tears and with trials that happened to me

  100. through the plots of the Jews.

  101. How I did not shrink from declaring to you

  102. anything that was profitable

  103. and teaching you in public and from house to house,

  104. testifying both to Jews and to Greeks

  105. of repentance toward God

  106. and of faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.

  107. And now behold, I am going to Jerusalem,

  108. constrained by the Spirit,

  109. not knowing what will happen to me there,

  110. except that the Holy Spirit testifies to me

  111. in every city that imprisonment

  112. and afflictions await me.

  113. But I do not count my life of any value

  114. nor as precious to myself.

  115. If only I may finish my course

  116. in the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus

  117. to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.

  118. And now behold, I know that none of you

  119. among whom I have gone about proclaiming the kingdom

  120. will see my face again.

  121. Therefore, I testify to you this day

  122. that I am innocent of the blood of all,

  123. for I did not shrink from declaring to you

  124. the whole counsel of God.

  125. Pay careful attention to yourselves

  126. and to all the flock in which the Holy Spirit

  127. has made you overseers,

  128. to care for the church of God

  129. which he obtained with his own blood.

  130. I know that after my departure,

  131. fierce wolves will come in among you,

  132. not sparing the flock.

  133. And from among your own selves

  134. will arise men speaking twisted things

  135. to draw away the disciples after them.

  136. Therefore, be alert,

  137. remembering that for three years

  138. I did not cease night or day

  139. to admonish everyone with tears.

  140. And now I commend you to God

  141. and to the word of his grace

  142. which is able to build you up

  143. and to give you the inheritance

  144. among all those who are sanctified.

  145. I coveted no one's silver or gold or apparel.

  146. You yourselves know that these hands

  147. ministered to my necessities

  148. and to those who were with me.

  149. In all things I have shown you

  150. that by working hard in this way

  151. we must help the weak

  152. and remember the words of the Lord Jesus

  153. how he said himself,

  154. it is more blessed to give than to receive.

  155. And when he had said these things

  156. he knelt down and prayed with them all.

  157. And there was much weeping on the part of all.

  158. They embraced Paul and kissed him

  159. being sorrowful most of all

  160. because of the word he had spoken

  161. that they would not see his face again.

  162. And they accompanied him to the ship.

  163. Let's pray together.

  164. Father, these are your words

  165. and we believe they are living and active

  166. sharper than any two-edged sword

  167. and we pray that by your Holy Spirit

  168. you would take the truth contained therein

  169. and write it upon our hearts and minds

  170. as this new chapter of history

  171. at Southwood Presbyterian Church unfolds

  172. that it would unfold according to

  173. your words prescription

  174. and not our own desires.

  175. Do a mighty work here we pray, oh God.

  176. To your glory through Jesus Christ.

  177. Amen.

  178. Amen.

  179. There is plenty in this text.

  180. It's a very long text

  181. and there is plenty that we could

  182. spend lots of time on

  183. but I would like to take from this text

  184. four principles that I feel are critical

  185. for the next phase of history

  186. for Southwood Presbyterian Church.

  187. Four things that I believe

  188. the word of God would tell you

  189. that you need to remember

  190. as you move forward

  191. and make the kind of history

  192. that brings glory to God.

  193. The first of those

  194. is that we are to be alert

  195. to the reality of spiritual warfare.

  196. And I had to decide

  197. which of these principles to put first

  198. and I didn't originally plan

  199. to put this first

  200. but I thought this provides the context.

  201. This provides the environment.

  202. This establishes the climate

  203. in which everything else comes

  204. and it is my friends

  205. that ministry happens

  206. in the midst of spiritual warfare.

  207. My wife and I enjoy receiving

  208. our monthly copy of Branches.

  209. We love to see and read

  210. about what's going on here

  211. at Southwood

  212. and it is really a wonderful place to be

  213. whether it's Trunk or Treat

  214. or a Half K

  215. or Falla Lodge

  216. or Hay Day.

  217. If I were living in Huntsville

  218. this is where I'd be.

  219. You all know what it is

  220. to have a really good time.

  221. But don't forget

  222. that true biblical ministry

  223. is done

  224. in the context

  225. of spiritual warfare.

  226. It is a battle

  227. to do ministry

  228. not a picnic.

  229. Paul didn't know

  230. exactly what would happen

  231. when he left Ephesus

  232. but he says

  233. I know this

  234. verse 29

  235. I know

  236. that after my departure

  237. fierce wolves

  238. will come in among you

  239. not sparing the flock

  240. and from among your own selves

  241. will arise men

  242. speaking twisted things

  243. to draw away the disciples

  244. after them.

  245. He says

  246. I can't tell you

  247. what's going to happen

  248. specifically

  249. but I know this

  250. I know this

  251. from the outside

  252. and from the inside

  253. ministry

  254. is going to be all about

  255. spiritual warfare.

  256. It may be the consequence

  257. of disobedience

  258. or it may be

  259. in the very midst

  260. of obedience

  261. but it will come.

  262. Adam and Eve

  263. didn't have to wait long

  264. before the tempter

  265. came to them.

  266. The Lord Jesus

  267. began his ministry

  268. in the wilderness

  269. being tempted

  270. by the devil.

  271. Paul will later

  272. write a letter

  273. back to these Ephesians

  274. in which in the 6th chapter

  275. he will talk about what?

  276. Spiritual warfare

  277. and the armor of God.

  278. In fact

  279. in this particular passage

  280. he says

  281. the Holy Spirit

  282. testifies to me

  283. in every city

  284. that imprisonment

  285. and afflictions

  286. await me.

  287. Spiritual ministry

  288. happens in the context

  289. of spiritual warfare.

  290. Most of us would agree

  291. that 9-11

  292. has changed a lot

  293. about the way we live.

  294. The threat of terrorism

  295. of the unknown

  296. the unforeseen

  297. the unexpected

  298. is now just a way

  299. of life for us

  300. in this world

  301. and safety

  302. and security

  303. are on our radar

  304. all the time.

  305. But if that's how we live

  306. in a general way

  307. how much more

  308. should the church

  309. of the Lord Jesus Christ

  310. understand

  311. that as we move forward

  312. in ministry

  313. we should expect

  314. anticipate

  315. prepare for

  316. and respond to

  317. any form of opposition

  318. that should come to us

  319. from the outside

  320. or again

  321. from the inside.

  322. Paul wanted the Ephesians

  323. to remember that

  324. and to tread

  325. carefully

  326. and prayerfully.

  327. I love the words

  328. of the hymn

  329. lead on

  330. O King Eternal

  331. the day of March

  332. has come

  333. henceforth

  334. in fields of conquest

  335. thy tent

  336. shall be our home

  337. through days

  338. of preparation

  339. your grace

  340. has made us strong

  341. and now

  342. O King Eternal

  343. we lift

  344. our battle

  345. song.

  346. May that be

  347. the theme

  348. of Southwood

  349. as it goes forward

  350. in the days ahead.

  351. Principle number two

  352. be convinced

  353. of the centrality

  354. of the gospel.

  355. What the heart

  356. is to the body

  357. the gospel

  358. is to the ministry

  359. of the church.

  360. Neglect your physical heart

  361. and you will pay

  362. the consequences.

  363. You will reap

  364. the benefits

  365. or the lack

  366. of benefits.

  367. Nurture it

  368. treasure it

  369. preach it

  370. live it

  371. the gospel

  372. and the power

  373. of God

  374. may be unleashed

  375. among you.

  376. Listen to what

  377. Paul says

  378. in verse 24.

  379. He says

  380. I don't account

  381. my life

  382. of any value

  383. nor as precious

  384. to myself

  385. if only I may

  386. finish my course

  387. in the ministry

  388. that I receive

  389. from the Lord Jesus

  390. to testify

  391. to the gospel

  392. of the grace

  393. of God.

  394. Why was he

  395. on this planet?

  396. Not to accumulate

  397. a portfolio

  398. of funds

  399. and resources

  400. and mutual funds?

  401. He was on

  402. this planet

  403. to testify

  404. to the grace

  405. of God

  406. the gospel

  407. of the grace

  408. of God.

  409. It was the gospel

  410. that consumed

  411. his focus

  412. and his energy

  413. it was the gospel

  414. that burned

  415. in his heart

  416. it didn't matter

  417. what else he accomplished

  418. if he failed

  419. to herald

  420. the gospel.

  421. And so when he

  422. writes to the Romans

  423. he said

  424. it's the gospel

  425. that's the power

  426. of God

  427. unto salvation

  428. to the Jew first

  429. and also to the Greek.

  430. When he writes

  431. to the Corinthians

  432. and he talks

  433. about all the issues

  434. that they're dealing

  435. with in Corinth

  436. he says

  437. I determined

  438. to know nothing

  439. among you

  440. except Jesus Christ

  441. and him crucified.

  442. When he writes

  443. from a Roman prison

  444. to the Philippians

  445. he says

  446. I'm surrounded

  447. by people

  448. that speak

  449. the gospel

  450. from envy

  451. or selfishness

  452. but hey

  453. I rejoice

  454. that the gospel

  455. is going forth.

  456. And to those

  457. same Philippians

  458. he says

  459. only let your manner

  460. of life

  461. be worthy

  462. of the gospel

  463. of Christ

  464. so that whether

  465. I come and see you

  466. or am absent

  467. I may hear of you

  468. that you are standing

  469. firm in one spirit

  470. with one mind

  471. striving side by side

  472. for the faith

  473. of the gospel.

  474. What a glorious

  475. statement to make

  476. as those of us

  477. who leave town today

  478. we go back

  479. our separate ways

  480. we say

  481. I pray

  482. that you will stand

  483. arm in arm

  484. side by side

  485. hand in hand

  486. for the message

  487. of the gospel.

  488. Sometimes we take

  489. the gospel for granted

  490. and act as if

  491. we can graduate

  492. from gospel application

  493. to deeper things

  494. and higher things.

  495. I can assure you

  496. when we think that way

  497. the devil

  498. smiles.

  499. Principle number three

  500. never forget

  501. the identity

  502. of the people

  503. you serve.

  504. Never forget

  505. the identity

  506. of the people

  507. that surround you.

  508. Look around you

  509. at the people

  510. in this congregation

  511. this morning.

  512. Who are they?

  513. How many times

  514. do we distinguish

  515. ourselves

  516. or identify

  517. ourselves

  518. by age

  519. or vocation

  520. or background

  521. or college allegiance

  522. or something else?

  523. Sometimes we want

  524. to be defined

  525. by our successes

  526. and sometimes

  527. unfortunately

  528. we are defined

  529. by our failures.

  530. But in the ministry

  531. of God's church

  532. all of that

  533. is secondary.

  534. Paul tells

  535. these elders

  536. in verse 28

  537. pay careful attention

  538. to yourselves

  539. and to all the flock

  540. in which the Holy Spirit

  541. has made you overseers

  542. to care for the church

  543. of God

  544. which he obtained

  545. or purchased

  546. with his own blood.

  547. The people around you

  548. are a flock.

  549. Psalm 100 says

  550. we are his people

  551. the sheep

  552. of his pasture.

  553. Jesus saw people

  554. as sheep

  555. without a shepherd

  556. and he had compassion

  557. on them.

  558. He said he was

  559. the good shepherd

  560. and he would lay down

  561. his life for his sheep.

  562. Verse 28 says

  563. that he would purchase

  564. the church of God

  565. with his own blood.

  566. We are not to be defined

  567. by our job

  568. or our age

  569. or our position

  570. or our allegiance

  571. to this school

  572. or that school.

  573. We are to be defined

  574. by our relationship

  575. to God

  576. through the gospel.

  577. These sheep about you

  578. will need tenderness

  579. and patience

  580. but they will also need

  581. instruction

  582. and correction.

  583. They will demand

  584. all the time

  585. that you can give

  586. to them

  587. but they will then

  588. bless you

  589. in ways

  590. that you could

  591. never anticipate.

  592. You know

  593. it doesn't really matter

  594. where you come from

  595. in Huntsville.

  596. What part of Huntsville

  597. you've come from today

  598. to be here at Southwood.

  599. It doesn't matter

  600. if you're still

  601. an intact nuclear family

  602. or whether that family

  603. blew up some time ago.

  604. It doesn't matter

  605. if you appear

  606. squeaky clean

  607. on the outside

  608. or have battle scars

  609. on your faces.

  610. When you come

  611. through these doors

  612. we all come

  613. as sinners

  614. in need of a savior

  615. as sheep

  616. in need of a shepherd

  617. as broken

  618. in need of healing

  619. as strugglers

  620. in need of help.

  621. The diversity

  622. that we see

  623. among us

  624. is trumped

  625. by our common need

  626. grace

  627. and our common hope

  628. Christ.

  629. And so Paul said

  630. to the Galatians

  631. in Christ Jesus

  632. you are all sons

  633. of God

  634. through faith.

  635. There is neither

  636. Jew nor Greek

  637. slave nor free

  638. male nor female

  639. for you are all

  640. one in Christ.

  641. To the Corinthians

  642. he would say

  643. for just as the body

  644. is one and as many members

  645. and all the members

  646. of the body

  647. though many

  648. are one body

  649. so it is with Christ

  650. for in one spirit

  651. we were all baptized

  652. into one body

  653. whether Jew or Greek

  654. slave or free

  655. and all were made

  656. to drink of one spirit.

  657. The unity

  658. that we have

  659. in Jesus Christ

  660. trumps all the diversity

  661. that would separate us

  662. from one another.

  663. And Southwood

  664. Presbyterian Church

  665. needs to move forward

  666. with that sense

  667. of unity

  668. where rich

  669. and poor

  670. black

  671. and white

  672. young

  673. and old

  674. tied

  675. and war eagle

  676. all find

  677. in Jesus Christ

  678. a unity

  679. that propels you

  680. forward

  681. in ministry

  682. to one another

  683. and through this church

  684. to the community.

  685. Finally

  686. principle four

  687. remain devoted

  688. to the priority

  689. of faithful

  690. biblical

  691. instruction.

  692. There are always

  693. temptations

  694. in ministry

  695. to bounce

  696. from one

  697. contemporary issue

  698. to the next

  699. to always want

  700. to sound relevant

  701. and in touch

  702. and to make

  703. the congregation

  704. feel like

  705. they're on the

  706. cutting edge

  707. of current debate.

  708. I confess

  709. the fear

  710. that I have

  711. in my own heart

  712. after 34 years

  713. in the same place

  714. is that someone

  715. would describe

  716. my ministry

  717. as miles wide

  718. and inches deep.

  719. Miles wide

  720. inches deep.

  721. Paul certainly

  722. seemed devoted

  723. to faithful teaching.

  724. He says in verse 20

  725. I did not shrink

  726. from declaring

  727. to you anything

  728. that was profitable

  729. and teaching you

  730. in public

  731. and from house

  732. to house.

  733. I didn't back off

  734. from anything

  735. whether it was

  736. public or private.

  737. He says in verse 27

  738. I did not shrink

  739. from declaring

  740. to you

  741. the whole

  742. counsel

  743. of God.

  744. That's a strong

  745. statement.

  746. The whole

  747. counsel of God.

  748. There wasn't anything

  749. I was afraid

  750. to talk about.

  751. No issue

  752. that I wouldn't raise.

  753. He didn't hesitate

  754. to demand

  755. that people think.

  756. He didn't apologize

  757. for apologetics.

  758. He valued

  759. sound doctrine

  760. and he appealed

  761. for a response

  762. to biblical truth.

  763. Notice verse 21

  764. testifying both

  765. to Jews

  766. and to Greeks

  767. of repentance

  768. toward God

  769. and of faith

  770. in our Lord

  771. Jesus Christ.

  772. Repentance

  773. toward God

  774. and faith

  775. in the Lord

  776. Jesus Christ.

  777. He said I pounded

  778. that over and over

  779. again.

  780. Why?

  781. Because it is

  782. through repentance

  783. and faith

  784. that one comes

  785. into the kingdom

  786. and it is true

  787. that through repentance

  788. and faith

  789. one walks

  790. and travels

  791. in the kingdom.

  792. we cannot assume

  793. that a busy church

  794. is necessarily

  795. a solid church.

  796. There are lots

  797. of churches today

  798. that are keeping

  799. their people

  800. very busy

  801. and very tired

  802. but building

  803. on a very sandy

  804. foundation.

  805. Theologian David

  806. Wells recently

  807. examined the weaknesses

  808. of today's

  809. evangelical church

  810. and prescribed

  811. some steps

  812. toward renewal.

  813. Listen to what

  814. he says.

  815. We must recover

  816. the lost word

  817. of God.

  818. If we do not

  819. recover the

  820. sufficiency

  821. of the word

  822. of God

  823. in our time

  824. if we do not

  825. relearn what it

  826. means to be

  827. sustained by it

  828. nourished by it

  829. disciplined by it

  830. and unless our

  831. preachers find

  832. the courage

  833. again to preach

  834. its truth

  835. we will lose

  836. our right

  837. to call ourselves

  838. Protestants.

  839. We will lose

  840. our capacity

  841. to be the people

  842. of God

  843. and we will

  844. set ourselves

  845. on a path

  846. that leads

  847. right into

  848. the old

  849. discredited

  850. liberal

  851. Protestantism.

  852. we have to

  853. recover a vivid

  854. otherworldliness

  855. by making

  856. ourselves once

  857. again captives

  858. to the truth

  859. of God

  860. regardless of

  861. the cultural

  862. consequences.

  863. That is

  864. the first

  865. thing.

  866. May Southwood's

  867. reputation be in

  868. this next chapter

  869. of its history

  870. that this is

  871. where the word

  872. of God

  873. is faithfully

  874. thoroughly

  875. and carefully

  876. taught

  877. and if people

  878. want to come

  879. and leave

  880. because you

  881. take the word

  882. of God

  883. too seriously

  884. let that not

  885. distract you

  886. from the call

  887. to make disciples

  888. presenting everyone

  889. mature

  890. in Christ.

  891. So Paul

  892. leaves Ephesus

  893. wondering

  894. what's going

  895. to become

  896. of his beloved

  897. Ephesian church

  898. but he does

  899. not wonder

  900. without hope.

  901. In verse 32

  902. it says

  903. and now

  904. Paul says

  905. I commend

  906. you to God

  907. and to the

  908. word of his

  909. grace

  910. which is able

  911. to build you

  912. up and to

  913. give you

  914. the inheritance

  915. among all

  916. those who

  917. are sanctified.

  918. He says

  919. I commend

  920. you to God

  921. because after

  922. all it is

  923. God who

  924. bought his

  925. church

  926. and it's

  927. God who

  928. builds his

  929. church

  930. it's God

  931. who makes

  932. things grow

  933. it is God

  934. who works

  935. in us

  936. both to will

  937. and to do

  938. for his good

  939. pleasure

  940. it is God

  941. who is able

  942. to do exceeding

  943. abundantly

  944. above all

  945. that we

  946. ask or

  947. imagine

  948. it is God

  949. who is able

  950. to make

  951. all grace

  952. abound to

  953. us

  954. Paul says

  955. I commend

  956. you to God

  957. and to

  958. the word

  959. of his

  960. grace

  961. not just

  962. to the

  963. word

  964. grace

  965. we're

  966. great

  967. at taking

  968. the word

  969. grace

  970. and throwing

  971. it around

  972. all the time

  973. using it

  974. all the time

  975. so that it

  976. means relatively

  977. nothing

  978. but Paul

  979. says I commend

  980. you to the

  981. word of his

  982. grace

  983. for it

  984. is the

  985. word of

  986. his

  987. grace

  988. that

  989. revives

  990. the soul

  991. and makes

  992. wise

  993. the simple

  994. and rejoices

  995. the heart

  996. and enlightens

  997. the eyes

  998. and endures

  999. forever

  1000. it is the

  1001. word of

  1002. his grace

  1003. which is

  1004. living and

  1005. active

  1006. sharper

  1007. than any

  1008. two-edged

  1009. sword

  1010. the word

  1011. of his

  1012. grace

  1013. does not

  1014. eliminate

  1015. spiritual

  1016. disciplines

  1017. like prayer

  1018. and bible

  1019. study

  1020. it promotes

  1021. those

  1022. disciplines

  1023. not in a

  1024. have to

  1025. mentality

  1026. but in a

  1027. want to

  1028. mentality

  1029. not to

  1030. satisfy

  1031. somebody's

  1032. list

  1033. of

  1034. do's

  1035. and

  1036. don'ts

  1037. but to

  1038. build a

  1039. relationship

  1040. that satisfies

  1041. you

  1042. in the

  1043. Lord Jesus

  1044. himself

  1045. how does

  1046. that happen

  1047. because the

  1048. word of his

  1049. grace always

  1050. points us

  1051. in one

  1052. direction

  1053. not to

  1054. ourselves

  1055. and not

  1056. to each

  1057. other

  1058. but to

  1059. the word

  1060. of grace

  1061. made

  1062. flesh

  1063. the lamb

  1064. of God

  1065. who takes

  1066. away the

  1067. sin of the

  1068. world

  1069. the one

  1070. from whom

  1071. we have

  1072. all received

  1073. grace

  1074. upon grace

  1075. God

  1076. and his

  1077. word of

  1078. grace

  1079. are able

  1080. to build

  1081. you up

  1082. and give

  1083. you an

  1084. inheritance

  1085. among all

  1086. those

  1087. who are

  1088. sanctified

  1089. February

  1090. 14th

  1091. 2016

  1092. a day

  1093. in history

  1094. you were

  1095. here

  1096. you were

  1097. here when

  1098. it began

  1099. this new

  1100. chapter of

  1101. Southwood

  1102. Presbyterian

  1103. Church history

  1104. is to

  1105. begin

  1106. to be

  1107. written

  1108. today

  1109. and I

  1110. would

  1111. hope

  1112. that the

  1113. pages

  1114. of this

  1115. chapter

  1116. will be

  1117. stained

  1118. by the

  1119. same

  1120. thing

  1121. that

  1122. marked

  1123. Paul's

  1124. labor

  1125. among

  1126. the

  1127. Ephesians

  1128. see if

  1129. you can

  1130. detect

  1131. it

  1132. Paul said

  1133. you

  1134. yourselves

  1135. know

  1136. how I

  1137. lived

  1138. among you

  1139. the whole

  1140. time

  1141. from the

  1142. first

  1143. day

  1144. that I

  1145. set

  1146. foot

  1147. in

  1148. Asia

  1149. serving

  1150. the

  1151. Lord

  1152. with

  1153. all

  1154. humility

  1155. and

  1156. with

  1157. tears

  1158. tears

  1159. therefore

  1160. be

  1161. alert

  1162. remembering

  1163. that

  1164. for

  1165. three

  1166. years

  1167. I

  1168. did

  1169. not

  1170. cease

  1171. night

  1172. or

  1173. day

  1174. to

  1175. admonish

  1176. everyone

  1177. with

  1178. tears

  1179. and when

  1180. he had

  1181. said all

  1182. these

  1183. things

  1184. he knelt

  1185. down

  1186. and prayed

  1187. with them

  1188. all

  1189. and there

  1190. was much

  1191. weeping

  1192. on the

  1193. part

  1194. of all

  1195. as they

  1196. embraced

  1197. Paul

  1198. and kissed

  1199. him

  1200. tears

  1201. you see

  1202. Paul's

  1203. warnings

  1204. were

  1205. sounded

  1206. in

  1207. love

  1208. the

  1209. gospel

  1210. was

  1211. declared

  1212. in

  1213. love

  1214. the

  1215. church

  1216. identity

  1217. was

  1218. cultivated

  1219. in

  1220. love

  1221. his

  1222. instruction

  1223. was

  1224. given

  1225. and

  1226. received

  1227. in

  1228. love

  1229. the

  1230. important

  1231. thing

  1232. is not

  1233. ultimately

  1234. how

  1235. big

  1236. Southwood

  1237. becomes

  1238. but

  1239. how

  1240. deep

  1241. not

  1242. what

  1243. the

  1244. community

  1245. thinks

  1246. about

  1247. you

  1248. but

  1249. how

  1250. much

  1251. love

  1252. the

  1253. community

  1254. sees

  1255. in

  1256. you

  1257. not

  1258. who

  1259. rises

  1260. to

  1261. lead

  1262. but

  1263. who

  1264. bows

  1265. to

  1266. serve

  1267. not

  1268. how

  1269. much

  1270. truth

  1271. you

  1272. accumulate

  1273. but

  1274. how

  1275. much

  1276. love

  1277. you

  1278. demonstrate

  1279. not

  1280. even

  1281. how

  1282. much

  1283. recognition

  1284. you

  1285. gain

  1286. in

  1287. the

  1288. community

  1289. but

  1290. how

  1291. much

  1292. glory

  1293. God

  1294. receives

  1295. may

  1296. this

  1297. chapter

  1298. end

  1299. as

  1300. Paul's

  1301. did

  1302. with

  1303. tears

  1304. of

  1305. joy

  1306. for

  1307. all

  1308. that

  1309. God

  1310. did

  1311. by

  1312. his

  1313. power

  1314. and

  1315. for

  1316. his

  1317. glory

  1318. in

  1319. the

  1320. lives

  1321. of

  1322. ordinary

  1323. people

  1324. who

  1325. met

  1326. an

  1327. extraordinary

  1328. savior

  1329. in the

  1330. classrooms

  1331. and

  1332. hallways

  1333. and

  1334. nurseries

  1335. and

  1336. youth

  1337. rooms

  1338. and

  1339. sanctuary

  1340. of

  1341. Southwood

  1342. Presbyterian

  1343. Church

  1344. and in

  1345. the hearts

  1346. of each

  1347. of you

  1348. as you

  1349. begin

  1350. today

  1351. to write

  1352. the next

  1353. chapter

  1354. in the

  1355. history

  1356. of your

  1357. church

  1358. write

  1359. well

  1360. my

  1361. friends

  1362. write

  1363. well

  1364. with the

  1365. gospel

  1366. before

  1367. you

  1368. let's

  1369. pray

  1370. father in

  1371. heaven

  1372. thank you

  1373. for

  1374. this

  1375. special

  1376. day

  1377. as we

  1378. mark

  1379. a new

  1380. chapter

  1381. in the

  1382. history

  1383. of

  1384. Southwood

  1385. Presbyterian

  1386. Church

  1387. a history

  1388. that we

  1389. are all

  1390. excited

  1391. to see

  1392. develop

  1393. before us

  1394. may it

  1395. be a
