  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. Amen is right. That's beautiful. Thank you, Michael, for that beautiful song and reminder of our glorious Savior.

  4. What a great, great Savior we have. Turn with me to Numbers chapter 21. Numbers 21.

    Numbers 21 chapter mention

  5. It's exciting to get to celebrate the entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem, coming as the King on Palm Sunday.

  6. We see Jesus there as the true King coming into Jerusalem, but we also see that Jesus is a very unusual kind of King.

  7. The sobering reality is that He's coming to be exalted on a throne that you'd never expect.

  8. He's coming to be lifted up, but like that song Michael just sang, lifted up was He to die on a cross.

  9. So as we anticipate that kind of, that's a unique coronation.

  10. One that involves death and resurrection again before the end of this week.

  11. We've been talking about some images of the cross from the Old Testament.

  12. Some foreshadows of what it will mean for Jesus to give His life in our place.

  13. We started talking about the scapegoat in Leviticus 16 on the Day of Atonement.

  14. And saw how part of what was happening on the cross is that Jesus was being sent away from the presence of God

  15. to die in our place so that we could come into the presence of God and live on His merit.

  16. Then last week we looked at the blood of the Lamb from Exodus 12 and the Passover.

  17. And we saw how another facet of the cross is that sinners find safety

  18. and are covered from the death their sin deserves only by the blood of the spotless Lamb.

  19. This morning we're looking at one more, a short story.

  20. It's represented there in the middle of that slide.

  21. Numbers 21, as God's people on their way to the promised land are wandering for 40 years in the wilderness, right?

  22. They're wandering because of their sin.

  23. And time after time, what God is doing is He's teaching them to trust Him.

  24. Often by showing them some very painful consequences of their sin and their lack of trust in Him.

  25. This story is no exception to that.

  26. Let's read Moses' account of this situation together.

  27. This is God's holy word.

  28. Numbers 21 at verse 4.

  29. From Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea to go around the land of Edom.

  30. And the people became impatient on the way.

  31. And the people spoke against God and against Moses.

  32. Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness?

  33. For there is no food and no water and we loathe this worthless food.

  34. Then the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people.

  35. And they bit the people so that many people of Israel died.

  36. And the people came to Moses and said,

  37. We have sinned for we have spoken against the Lord and against you.

  38. Pray to the Lord that He may take away the serpents from us.

  39. So Moses prayed for the people.

  40. And the Lord said to Moses,

  41. Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole.

  42. And everyone who is bitten when he sees it shall live.

  43. So Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on a pole.

  44. And if a serpent bit anyone,

  45. he would look at the bronze serpent and live.

  46. Pray with me.

  47. Father, this is Your Word.

  48. And we would see Jesus in it this morning.

  49. We need to see Him.

  50. Would You show Him to us by Your Spirit?

  51. We ask in His name.

  52. Amen.

  53. Amen.

  54. As our story opens this morning,

  55. we find God's people, the Israelites,

  56. wandering in the desert, right?

  57. Remember, God had delivered them out of slavery in Egypt

  58. to bring them to the promised land of Canaan.

  59. He was taking them somewhere,

  60. but they didn't trust Him, did they?

  61. They didn't trust Him to get them into the land,

  62. to care for them as they went in.

  63. So now they're wandering away from the promised land.

  64. And they're becoming impatient, verse 4 says.

  65. The word here, impatient, is the opposite of long-suffering.

  66. They're tired of any suffering or difficulty very quickly.

  67. No patience for it.

  68. And as a result of their impatience, verse 5 says,

  69. they spoke against God and against Moses.

  70. Why have You brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness?

  71. For there's no food and no water,

  72. and we loathe this worthless food.

  73. If you're familiar with the story of the Old Testament,

  74. this sounds a little bit familiar, doesn't it?

  75. It's not the first time that God's people have asked a question like this.

  76. Why did You bring us out of Egypt

  77. if we're just going to die out here in the wilderness?

  78. It seems that the setting sin of this generation of God's people

  79. was discontentment, distrust of God's good care for them

  80. and grumbling against Him.

  81. They asked that question right when they had just gotten out of Egypt.

  82. Did You just bring us out here to die?

  83. There's no food and water, they say.

  84. Or, well, we'll be honest, there is some food.

  85. There is manna God sends every day,

  86. but it's worthless.

  87. So dull and so boringly the same every day when He sends it.

  88. The way You're providing for me, God,

  89. is not meeting my expectations.

  90. They've complained about that

  91. even though God has sent manna from heaven,

  92. water out of a rock,

  93. again, it's not good enough.

  94. And they don't look trustingly to God, do they?

  95. Thankfully, distrusting God's provision

  96. and discontentment about the way that God has cared for us

  97. and provided for us

  98. is not something that anyone struggles with anymore.

  99. It's one of those Old Testament sins, isn't it?

  100. That none of us has ever experienced or known what that feels like.

  101. Aren't you glad for that?

  102. Plus, we don't even know what it would be like

  103. to struggle with the same sin more than once, do we?

  104. I mean, to come back and mess up in the same way again,

  105. none of us can relate to that.

  106. Let's be honest.

  107. We're an entitled bunch of people, aren't we?

  108. We know the things we think we deserve.

  109. We deserve better.

  110. And we're not willing to suffer very long

  111. while waiting on God's promises to come to fruition, are we?

  112. And we know very well, don't we,

  113. what it's like to struggle with a sin

  114. and think we've got it behind us

  115. and then see it show back up.

  116. Back to the same destructive patterns,

  117. the same selfish habits,

  118. the same empty idols that we think we deserve

  119. and are going to fulfill us this time.

  120. You see, that's the poison of discontentment,

  121. of distrusting God

  122. and always feeling He should be caring for us differently.

  123. That lie of Satan back in the garden

  124. creeps in again

  125. and tempts us to believe that God's not really good.

  126. He doesn't really have your best interest at heart.

  127. You know better.

  128. It keeps coming back, doesn't it?

  129. It looks different each time,

  130. but it keeps rearing its ugly head in our hearts.

  131. It's poisonous in our hearts like that.

  132. And God sends among His people here

  133. the manifestation of that toxic venom in their hearts.

  134. That poison of discontent that has spread

  135. shows up in the form of poisonous serpents

  136. that are there to remind them of

  137. the toxic venom in their hearts

  138. that has come out of their lips as well.

  139. They've spoken against God and against Moses

  140. whom He's sent to represent Him.

  141. So the snakes are a constant reminder of what?

  142. Of their sin.

  143. That poisonous venom that is killing them spiritually

  144. just as the snakes are killing them physically.

  145. So what happens after God sends these snakes

  146. and many are dying?

  147. God's people respond to His discipline

  148. and they turn back to Him for help, don't they?

  149. They're desperate.

  150. The snakes are killing them.

  151. And they plead with Moses to intercede for them

  152. and take the snakes away.

  153. Verse 7.

  154. The people came to Moses and said,

  155. We've sinned for we've spoken against the Lord

  156. and against you.

  157. Pray to the Lord that He take away the serpents from us.

  158. So Moses prayed for the people

  159. and the Lord said to Moses,

  160. Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole

  161. and everyone who is bitten when he sees it shall live.

  162. So Moses made the bronze serpent and set it on a pole

  163. and if a serpent bit anyone,

  164. he would look at the bronze serpent and live.

  165. Notice a couple of things here.

  166. Notice first the merciful heart of God, right?

  167. God who with these people having turned away from Him

  168. and spoken against Him

  169. and grumbled and complained.

  170. He woos them.

  171. Their distrusting and their grumbling hearts

  172. He brings back to Himself

  173. so that they cry out to Him.

  174. And when they do, He provides healing for them.

  175. He shows them mercy.

  176. But notice also one other thing.

  177. God doesn't actually do what the people ask Him to do, does He?

  178. What is it that the people ask for?

  179. What do they want God to do?

  180. Pray, Moses, to the Lord

  181. that He take these serpents away from us.

  182. They're killing us.

  183. Pray that He would make them go away.

  184. Does God do what they ask?

  185. No, apparently people are still getting bitten by these serpents

  186. even after God responds mercifully.

  187. The serpents are still there

  188. but God does provide a way to be healed, doesn't He?

  189. Looking to the bronze serpent held up on the pole.

  190. It's interesting.

  191. What are God's people told to do if they want healing?

  192. They're told to look at the same thing

  193. that is killing them.

  194. God uses the same word here

  195. for the fiery serpent that He tells Moses

  196. to put up on the pole.

  197. The same word as the serpents that are killing them

  198. and He says, look at that in order to be healed.

  199. Now imagine for a minute

  200. that you're one of the Israelites in this situation.

  201. Of all the things in the world,

  202. what is the one thing you are absolutely sick

  203. of looking at at this point?

  204. Snakes, right?

  205. They're all over the place.

  206. First of all, they're everywhere.

  207. I can't get away from them.

  208. And then remember,

  209. what do the snakes remind you of?

  210. Do you remember what they represent?

  211. They're reminding me of,

  212. not of healing and deliverance

  213. and what I'm longing for,

  214. but my sin.

  215. They remind me of the poison,

  216. of distrust.

  217. How I've abandoned and failed Yahweh

  218. over and over.

  219. And Yahweh says,

  220. look at that

  221. and you will live.

  222. I can imagine I'd want to look anywhere else.

  223. It's like sometimes when you have to look away

  224. when you're watching something develop

  225. in front of you

  226. and you've seen too much devastation

  227. and you see that there's more coming

  228. and you think,

  229. I can't bear to watch it.

  230. I know what's about to happen.

  231. You don't want to look at all.

  232. But you have to.

  233. Because people still get bitten.

  234. The serpent is held up

  235. and people trust God

  236. what He says to do

  237. and they look at it

  238. and the toxic venom inside them

  239. is healed and they live, right?

  240. People full of poison

  241. look at the very thing

  242. that is killing them

  243. and are healed.

  244. And Jesus tells us

  245. that we shouldn't miss

  246. the foreshadow of His cross,

  247. of His healing work.

  248. We don't have to wonder about

  249. whether or not we get a picture of Jesus here,

  250. do we?

  251. Are we making this up

  252. in trying to connect this story to Jesus?

  253. Jesus tells us

  254. when He speaks with Nicodemus

  255. in John chapter 3.

    John 3 chapter mention

  256. This is what Jesus tells Nicodemus.

  257. As Moses lifted up the serpent

  258. in the wilderness,

  259. so must the Son of Man be lifted up

  260. that whoever believes in Him

  261. may have eternal life.

  262. That sounds wonderful, doesn't it?

  263. Eternal life.

  264. The people in the wilderness

  265. didn't even get that.

  266. They were just healed temporarily

  267. from the snake bite.

  268. Eternal life

  269. when the Son of Man is lifted up.

  270. In fact, the next verse is what?

  271. What comes after John 3.15?

  272. That's right.

  273. John 3.16.

  274. Very good.

  275. Very good.

  276. You're awake.

  277. John 3.16

  278. where God so loves the world

  279. that what He does is send His Son

  280. because everyone needs to believe in Him

  281. and therefore not perish

  282. but have eternal life.

  283. It sounds wonderful.

  284. It sounds exciting

  285. that Jesus will be lifted up

  286. and people will have eternal life.

  287. But what does it mean

  288. that Jesus will be lifted up

  289. as Moses lifted up the snake

  290. in the wilderness?

  291. That's why we started

  292. with understanding the story

  293. in numbers.

  294. And so what we understand

  295. from that story

  296. is that Jesus, like the snake,

  297. is not merely a picture of healing.

  298. Right?

  299. But rather as He is lifted up

  300. on the cross,

  301. He is a picture

  302. of what is killing us.

  303. Isn't He?

  304. That sounds odd.

  305. It was okay to talk about the snake

  306. like that, Will,

  307. but now you've confused me.

  308. Jesus as a picture

  309. of what is killing me?

  310. That's not how I usually think

  311. of Jesus.

  312. Remember that these people

  313. full of poison,

  314. they look at the very thing

  315. that is killing them

  316. and they are healed.

  317. With Jesus,

  318. He Himself

  319. bore our sins

  320. in His body

  321. on the tree

  322. so that what is happening

  323. on the cross

  324. is that Jesus,

  325. yes, He's a Savior,

  326. yes, He's bringing healing,

  327. but Jesus is actually

  328. becoming sin

  329. for us.

  330. Do you remember

  331. how Paul explains

  332. the work of Christ

  333. in 2 Corinthians?

  334. God made Jesus,

  335. the one who knew

  336. no sin,

  337. the one who'd never sinned

  338. and didn't know

  339. what that would be like,

  340. God made Him

  341. to be sin

  342. for us

  343. so that in Him

  344. we might become

  345. the righteousness

  346. of God.

  347. God made His

  348. holy,

  349. undefiled Son

  350. to be

  351. sin.

  352. not just to bear sin,

  353. but to actually

  354. become sin

  355. for us

  356. so that we could

  357. become righteous.

  358. That's how eternal life

  359. happens.

  360. In other words,

  361. on the cross,

  362. Jesus receives

  363. the curse

  364. that sin deserves.

  365. Cursed is

  366. everyone

  367. who is hung

  368. on a tree.

  369. Jesus

  370. hangs on the cross

  371. first

  372. as the sin

  373. that kills us

  374. as an object

  375. of scorn,

  376. of rejection,

  377. of cursing.

  378. And only when we

  379. see Him as such

  380. in our place

  381. can we receive

  382. the healing

  383. that He provides.

  384. He does provide

  385. healing there.

  386. But until

  387. He becomes

  388. our sin,

  389. we don't get

  390. His righteousness.

  391. Right?

  392. Isn't that what

  393. 2 Corinthians 5 says?

  394. It's when He

  395. becomes our sin

  396. that we

  397. become

  398. righteous.

  399. So for those of us

  400. who find ourselves

  401. time and again

  402. going back

  403. to the same

  404. sins

  405. rather than

  406. trusting God.

  407. For those of us

  408. who are dying

  409. from the poison

  410. of sin

  411. that runs in our

  412. blood,

  413. from the toxic

  414. venom that comes

  415. from our hearts

  416. and destroys us,

  417. we must remember

  418. that we will be

  419. healed by looking

  420. at what is

  421. killing us.

  422. Not perhaps

  423. where we might

  424. think to look,

  425. but looking

  426. at our sin,

  427. we will be

  428. healed by looking

  429. at our sin

  430. on another.

  431. God has provided

  432. for us a cure

  433. as He did

  434. for the people

  435. in the wilderness.

  436. A Savior

  437. who as He is

  438. lifted up

  439. on the cross,

  440. beaten,

  441. bloodied,

  442. dying,

  443. is not

  444. perhaps

  445. what we would

  446. expect

  447. or even

  448. want

  449. to look at,

  450. but who truly

  451. does save us.

  452. Let me share

  453. with you a picture

  454. of this from a

  455. children's book

  456. called The Watsons

  457. Go to Birmingham.

  458. Sometimes when we

  459. don't think about

  460. things a particular

  461. way,

  462. having a picture

  463. of it,

  464. especially a

  465. children's book

  466. picture,

  467. can be a little

  468. bit helpful.

  469. In this book,

  470. the main character

  471. Kenny is a

  472. ten-year-old boy

  473. who regularly

  474. gets picked on

  475. and teased

  476. and bullied

  477. at school

  478. and particularly

  479. on the bus

  480. this happens

  481. to Kenny.

  482. He writes about

  483. and what I'm about

  484. to read you

  485. that the day

  486. that all of

  487. that stopped

  488. when some new

  489. boys came on

  490. the bus.

  491. Two new boys

  492. who were late

  493. getting on

  494. the bus.

  495. I'll read it to you

  496. as he writes.

  497. It starts with a

  498. little bit of

  499. background for this

  500. day.

  501. Every once in a

  502. while,

  503. Mama would make

  504. me go to Sunday

  505. school with Joey.

  506. Even though it

  507. was just a bunch

  508. of singing and

  509. coloring and

  510. coloring books

  511. and listening

  512. to Mrs. Davidson,

  513. I had learned

  514. one thing.

  515. I learned about

  516. getting saved.

  517. I learned how

  518. someone could

  519. come to you

  520. when you were

  521. feeling real,

  522. real bad

  523. and could take

  524. all of your

  525. problems away

  526. and make you

  527. feel better.

  528. I learned that

  529. the person who

  530. saved you,

  531. your personal

  532. saver,

  533. was sent by God

  534. to protect you

  535. and help you

  536. out.

  537. Now he takes us

  538. to the day

  539. that his trouble

  540. stopped.

  541. When the bigger

  542. one of the two

  543. boys who got

  544. on the bus

  545. late said to

  546. the driver in

  547. a real down

  548. south accent,

  549. thank you for

  550. stopping,

  551. sir.

  552. I knew right

  553. away.

  554. I knew that

  555. God had finally

  556. gotten sick of

  557. me being teased

  558. and picked on

  559. all the time.

  560. As I looked at

  561. this new boy

  562. with the great

  563. big smile and

  564. the jacket with

  565. holes in the

  566. sleeves and the

  567. raggedy tennis

  568. shoes and the

  569. tore up blue

  570. jeans, I knew

  571. who he was.

  572. Maybe he didn't

  573. live a million

  574. years ago and

  575. maybe he didn't

  576. have a beard

  577. and long hair

  578. and maybe he

  579. wasn't born

  580. under a star,

  581. but I knew

  582. anyway.

  583. I knew God

  584. had finally

  585. sent me some

  586. help.

  587. I knew God

  588. had finally

  589. sent me my

  590. personal saver.

  591. Not what Kenny

  592. expected his

  593. personal saver

  594. to look like.

  595. He says,

  596. I was kind of

  597. surprised that

  598. God would send

  599. a saver to me

  600. in such raggedy

  601. clothes.

  602. Not what he

  603. expected.

  604. Perhaps he

  605. expected someone

  606. strong, someone

  607. dashingly dressed,

  608. someone noble to

  609. come in and be

  610. his saver.

  611. But he knew him

  612. when he saw him,

  613. didn't he?

  614. Someone who

  615. looked like

  616. everything he

  617. felt and feared

  618. he was as the

  619. kid who got

  620. picked on.

  621. Outcast.

  622. Tattered.

  623. Shameful.

  624. Worthy of

  625. scorn.

  626. Someone else

  627. was going to be

  628. the butt of all

  629. the jokes.

  630. The one who

  631. suffered what

  632. Kenny had

  633. endured for so

  634. long.

  635. And Kenny

  636. would be

  637. saved.

  638. So at the

  639. cross, we

  640. find healing.

  641. A personal

  642. saver,

  643. Kenny would

  644. call it,

  645. when we

  646. look at

  647. our sin

  648. on another.

  649. When we

  650. look to the

  651. cross and

  652. see Jesus,

  653. this very

  654. unusual kind

  655. of king,

  656. suffering shame,

  657. rejection,

  658. punishment,

  659. that we know

  660. are rightfully

  661. ours.

  662. When we see

  663. him actually

  664. become sin

  665. for us.

  666. So we

  667. look to the

  668. cross over

  669. and over

  670. because of

  671. that perplexing

  672. reality that

  673. God doesn't

  674. just take all

  675. of our sin

  676. away as we

  677. often wish

  678. he would.

  679. He instead

  680. provides a way

  681. to be healed

  682. from the sin

  683. that keeps

  684. plaguing us,

  685. doesn't he?

  686. It's just like

  687. with his people,

  688. isn't it?

  689. Why not just

  690. remove all the

  691. snakes, God?

  692. That would be

  693. easy.

  694. I've got a way

  695. out of this

  696. mess.

  697. Just get rid

  698. of the snakes.

  699. Well, the Bible

  700. doesn't tell us

  701. all the reasons

  702. why he doesn't

  703. do that in this

  704. story, but I

  705. think at least

  706. one is quite

  707. apparent.

  708. What happens

  709. to God's people

  710. over and over

  711. and over when

  712. his discipline

  713. is removed?

  714. They forget

  715. the danger of

  716. their sin,

  717. don't they?

  718. And in their

  719. discontentment

  720. with God and

  721. how he cares

  722. for them,

  723. they go seeking

  724. fulfillment in

  725. other places

  726. over and over.

  727. And God wants

  728. to teach us

  729. to look trustingly

  730. to him.

  731. So he says,

  732. if you want

  733. to survive,

  734. you are going

  735. to have to

  736. keep trusting

  737. me,

  738. seeing your sin

  739. for what it is

  740. and looking to

  741. me for healing.

  742. I'm convinced

  743. that's at least

  744. part of why

  745. we still

  746. struggle against

  747. sin.

  748. Because God

  749. knows what we

  750. need every

  751. day is to

  752. be looking

  753. away from

  754. ourselves

  755. and to

  756. him,

  757. depending not

  758. on what we

  759. think is best,

  760. but trusting

  761. him to

  762. heal us

  763. from the

  764. poison that

  765. is running

  766. through us.

  767. So practically

  768. speaking,

  769. what happens

  770. when we look

  771. to Jesus

  772. over and

  773. over?

  774. We talk a lot

  775. around here

  776. about experiencing

  777. his grace

  778. every moment,

  779. right?

  780. of our

  781. constant needs

  782. being constantly

  783. met in

  784. Christ.

  785. You've heard

  786. preachers like

  787. me say things

  788. like,

  789. preach the

  790. gospel to

  791. yourself every

  792. day.

  793. You need to

  794. remember it

  795. all the time.

  796. What happens

  797. when we do?

  798. I think at

  799. least two

  800. things happen

  801. constantly.

  802. The first is

  803. that looking

  804. to Jesus

  805. helps me

  806. hate my

  807. sin.

  808. As opposed

  809. to my

  810. natural tendency

  811. to minimize

  812. or ignore

  813. or downplay

  814. my sin,

  815. I have to

  816. look at it

  817. head on.

  818. I have to

  819. face my

  820. distrust of

  821. God for

  822. what it

  823. really is

  824. when I

  825. see what

  826. it cost

  827. Jesus.

  828. When I

  829. look at

  830. Him and

  831. see the

  832. shame

  833. and the

  834. disgrace

  835. and the

  836. pain my

  837. Savior took

  838. on the

  839. cross.

  840. And so I

  841. hate the

  842. sin.

  843. But at the

  844. same time,

  845. I experience

  846. freedom from

  847. that shame

  848. and disgrace

  849. and pain

  850. that I

  851. feel as I

  852. experience

  853. God's

  854. forgiveness.

  855. As I see

  856. someone else

  857. become my

  858. sin so that

  859. I will never

  860. be defined

  861. by it.

  862. I'm now

  863. free and

  864. when He

  865. becomes my

  866. sin, I

  867. become His

  868. righteousness.

  869. The famous

  870. Scottish

  871. pastor Robert

  872. Murray McShane

  873. talked about

  874. it this way.

  875. I love

  876. this quote.

  877. He says,

  878. For every

  879. look at

  880. yourself,

  881. take ten

  882. looks at

  883. Christ.

  884. He is

  885. altogether

  886. lovely.

  887. Such

  888. infinite

  889. majesty and

  890. yet such

  891. meekness and

  892. grace and

  893. all for

  894. sinners,

  895. even the

  896. chief.

  897. He says,

  898. live much

  899. in the

  900. smiles of

  901. God.

  902. I think

  903. that's what

  904. he meant

  905. by preach

  906. the gospel

  907. to yourself

  908. every day.

  909. That's what

  910. he's saying.

  911. Live much

  912. in the

  913. smiles of

  914. God.

  915. Bask

  916. in his

  917. beams.

  918. Feel his

  919. all-seeing

  920. eyes settled

  921. on you in

  922. love and

  923. repose in

  924. his almighty

  925. arms.

  926. Let your

  927. soul be

  928. filled with

  929. a heart

  930. ravishing

  931. sense of

  932. the sweetness

  933. and excellency

  934. of Christ

  935. and all

  936. that is in

  937. him.

  938. Let the

  939. Holy Spirit

  940. fill every

  941. chamber of

  942. your heart

  943. and so

  944. there will

  945. be no

  946. room for

  947. folly

  948. or the

  949. world

  950. or Satan

  951. or the

  952. flesh.

  953. For

  954. every look

  955. at yourself

  956. take ten

  957. looks at

  958. Christ.

  959. He says

  960. when you

  961. see your

  962. sin the

  963. poison and

  964. of your

  965. anger

  966. of your

  967. lust

  968. of your

  969. discontent

  970. of your

  971. self-focused

  972. self-obsessed

  973. life.

  974. Look quickly

  975. to him

  976. who has

  977. taken your

  978. sin.

  979. See Jesus

  980. actually

  981. becoming

  982. anger

  983. anger and

  984. lust and

  985. discontent

  986. and self-obsession

  987. for you

  988. so that you

  989. can be filled

  990. with him

  991. and leave

  992. no room

  993. for sin

  994. in your

  995. heart

  996. that you

  997. hate it

  998. and there's

  999. no room

  1000. for it.

  1001. You then

  1002. experience

  1003. the freedom

  1004. of God's

  1005. forgiveness

  1006. and can

  1007. rest

  1008. in your

  1009. father's

  1010. arms.

  1011. That's the

  1012. good news

  1013. of the

  1014. gospel.

  1015. It's the

  1016. glorious reality

  1017. of preaching

  1018. the gospel

  1019. to yourself

  1020. every day.

  1021. Every time

  1022. you see

  1023. the sin

  1024. that is

  1025. killing you

  1026. looking at

  1027. it in

  1028. Jesus

  1029. and remembering

  1030. that you

  1031. are free

  1032. and righteous

  1033. in him

  1034. because he

  1035. has taken

  1036. your sin.

  1037. Can I push

  1038. one more step

  1039. with this

  1040. while we're

  1041. on it?

  1042. Would you

  1043. be willing

  1044. to consider

  1045. this morning

  1046. the more

  1047. difficult

  1048. and painful

  1049. task

  1050. of doing

  1051. the same

  1052. with the

  1053. sin of

  1054. your

  1055. brothers

  1056. and

  1057. sisters?

  1058. For every

  1059. look at

  1060. their sin

  1061. take ten

  1062. looks at

  1063. Christ.

  1064. You see

  1065. Christ

  1066. became

  1067. their

  1068. careless

  1069. words

  1070. their

  1071. unloving

  1072. spirit

  1073. their

  1074. prideful

  1075. condescension

  1076. their

  1077. abusive

  1078. actions

  1079. which have

  1080. hurt you

  1081. so deeply

  1082. and realize

  1083. as you

  1084. look at

  1085. Christ

  1086. ten

  1087. times

  1088. that if

  1089. God

  1090. has

  1091. forgiven

  1092. them

  1093. at the

  1094. cross

  1095. you

  1096. must

  1097. too.

  1098. Other

  1099. people

  1100. must

  1101. get to

  1102. live

  1103. in the

  1104. same

  1105. freedom

  1106. that you

  1107. are

  1108. enjoying

  1109. in

  1110. Christ.

  1111. It's a

  1112. little bit

  1113. harder

  1114. isn't it?

  1115. I don't

  1116. like that

  1117. application

  1118. so much

  1119. pastor

  1120. come on

  1121. what about

  1122. preach the

  1123. gospel

  1124. to myself?

  1125. This is

  1126. preach the

  1127. gospel

  1128. to yourself

  1129. it's the

  1130. gospel

  1131. that applies

  1132. not just

  1133. to you

  1134. but to

  1135. all of

  1136. your

  1137. brothers

  1138. and

  1139. sisters

  1140. who are

  1141. hidden

  1142. in

  1143. Christ.

  1144. He's

  1145. paid

  1146. for

  1147. their

  1148. sins

  1149. he's

  1150. forgiven

  1151. their

  1152. sins

  1153. too.

  1154. It's

  1155. how the

  1156. gospel

  1157. transforms

  1158. us

  1159. in our

  1160. relationships

  1161. because

  1162. not only

  1163. has

  1164. Jesus

  1165. become

  1166. my

  1167. sin

  1168. in

  1169. my

  1170. place

  1171. he's

  1172. become

  1173. their

  1174. sin

  1175. in

  1176. their

  1177. place

  1178. hasn't

  1179. he?

  1180. he's

  1181. become

  1182. your

  1183. sin

  1184. in

  1185. your

  1186. place

  1187. too.

  1188. Now

  1189. remember

  1190. I'm

  1191. not

  1192. saying

  1193. you

  1194. quit

  1195. hating

  1196. that

  1197. sin

  1198. or

  1199. all

  1200. its

  1201. painful

  1202. effects

  1203. disappear

  1204. and

  1205. shouldn't

  1206. be

  1207. dealt

  1208. with

  1209. not

  1210. at

  1211. all

  1212. seeing

  1213. our

  1214. sin

  1215. on

  1216. Jesus

  1217. makes

  1218. us

  1219. hate

  1220. the

  1221. sin

  1222. all

  1223. the

  1224. more

  1225. but

  1226. it

  1227. also

  1228. calls

  1229. us

  1230. and

  1231. drives

  1232. us

  1233. to

  1234. forgive

  1235. sins

  1236. that

  1237. we

  1238. could

  1239. otherwise

  1240. never

  1241. imagine

  1242. forgiving

  1243. and

  1244. the

  1245. freedom

  1246. of

  1247. Christ

  1248. is

  1249. for

  1250. you

  1251. and

  1252. for

  1253. them

  1254. are

  1255. you

  1256. expressing

  1257. the

  1258. grace

  1259. that

  1260. you're

  1261. experiencing

  1262. for

  1263. yourself

  1264. one

  1265. last

  1266. thing

  1267. as we

  1268. close

  1269. this

  1270. morning

  1271. I

  1272. hope

  1273. you're

  1274. seeing

  1275. the

  1276. beauty

  1277. of yet

  1278. another

  1279. facet

  1280. of the

  1281. cross

  1282. of

  1283. Christ

  1284. today

  1285. but

  1286. I

  1287. think

  1288. lots

  1289. of

  1290. times

  1291. this

  1292. can

  1293. remain

  1294. very

  1295. theoretical

  1296. look

  1297. to

  1298. Jesus

  1299. preach

  1300. the

  1301. gospel

  1302. to

  1303. yourself

  1304. every

  1305. day

  1306. that

  1307. sounds

  1308. so

  1309. nice

  1310. doesn't

  1311. it

  1312. you

  1313. know

  1314. preacher

  1315. just

  1316. say

  1317. that

  1318. thing

  1319. I

  1320. don't

  1321. know

  1322. what

  1323. you're

  1324. talking

  1325. about

  1326. but

  1327. sure

  1328. that

  1329. that

  1330. sounded

  1331. really

  1332. spiritual

  1333. when

  1334. you

  1335. said

  1336. that

  1337. I'm

  1338. going

  1339. to

  1340. preach

  1341. the

  1342. gospel

  1343. to

  1344. myself

  1345. every

  1346. day

  1347. I'll

  1348. try

  1349. that

  1350. let

  1351. me

  1352. tell

  1353. you

  1354. I

  1355. hope

  1356. very

  1357. practically

  1358. what

  1359. it

  1360. looks

  1361. like

  1362. in

  1363. my

  1364. life

  1365. to

  1366. try

  1367. to

  1368. help

  1369. us

  1370. put

  1371. some

  1372. legs

  1373. on

  1374. this

  1375. I'll

  1376. just

  1377. use

  1378. one

  1379. story

  1380. and

  1381. we'll

  1382. be

  1383. through

  1384. a

  1385. couple

  1386. weeks

  1387. ago

  1388. my

  1389. wife

  1390. joined

  1391. many

  1392. of

  1393. you

  1394. on

  1395. Southwood's

  1396. women's

  1397. retreat

  1398. which

  1399. was

  1400. fantastic

  1401. and

  1402. meant

  1403. for

  1404. me

  1405. that

  1406. I

  1407. got

  1408. an

  1409. entire

  1410. weekend

  1411. just

  1412. me

  1413. and

  1414. my

  1415. three

  1416. girls

  1417. whom

  1418. I

  1419. love

  1420. dearly

  1421. I

  1422. was

  1423. looking

  1424. forward

  1425. to

  1426. that

  1427. time

  1428. together

  1429. and

  1430. probably

  1431. to

  1432. be

  1433. honest

  1434. a

  1435. chance

  1436. to

  1437. prove

  1438. to

  1439. myself

  1440. what

  1441. an

  1442. amazing

  1443. stop

  1444. laughing

  1445. at

  1446. me

  1447. I

  1448. am

  1449. amazing

  1450. I

  1451. wanted

  1452. God

  1453. to

  1454. give

  1455. us

  1456. a

  1457. special

  1458. weekend

  1459. together

  1460. that's

  1461. what

  1462. I

  1463. expected

  1464. by

  1465. the

  1466. end

  1467. of

  1468. Friday

  1469. which

  1470. in

  1471. fairness

  1472. to

  1473. me

  1474. was

  1475. a

  1476. day

  1477. off

  1478. of

  1479. school

  1480. I

  1481. mean

  1482. come

  1483. on

  1484. really

  1485. a

  1486. full

  1487. day

  1488. by

  1489. the

  1490. end

  1491. of

  1492. Friday

  1493. I

  1494. was

  1495. impatient

  1496. my

  1497. girls

  1498. weren't

  1499. giving me

  1500. the

  1501. space

  1502. to do

  1503. what

  1504. was

  1505. on

  1506. my

  1507. schedule

  1508. they

  1509. were

  1510. responding

  1511. disrespectfully

  1512. to

  1513. me

  1514. and

  1515. the

  1516. volume

  1517. of

  1518. my

  1519. voice

  1520. was

  1521. getting

  1522. louder

  1523. and

  1524. louder

  1525. with

  1526. every

  1527. interaction

  1528. I

  1529. was

  1530. discontent

  1531. I

  1532. wasn't

  1533. trusting

  1534. God

  1535. that

  1536. he

  1537. knew

  1538. what

  1539. was

  1540. best

  1541. for

  1542. the

  1543. weekend

  1544. and

  1545. what

  1546. it

  1547. should

  1548. look

  1549. like

  1550. I

  1551. had

  1552. my

  1553. own

  1554. plans

  1555. and

  1556. my

  1557. kids

  1558. weren't

  1559. cooperating

  1560. with

  1561. them

  1562. I

  1563. was

  1564. the

  1565. first

  1566. parent

  1567. ever

  1568. to

  1569. find

  1570. himself

  1571. in

  1572. that

  1573. position

  1574. before

  1575. and

  1576. I

  1577. lost

  1578. my

  1579. temper

  1580. I

  1581. yelled

  1582. at

  1583. them

  1584. I

  1585. hurt

  1586. them

  1587. I

  1588. could

  1589. see

  1590. it

  1591. in

  1592. their

  1593. eyes

  1594. that

  1595. night

  1596. I'd

  1597. like to

  1598. say

  1599. it's

  1600. the

  1601. first

  1602. time

  1603. that's

  1604. ever

  1605. happened

  1606. but

  1607. I

  1608. don't

  1609. want

  1610. to

  1611. add

  1612. lying

  1613. to

  1614. my

  1615. rap

  1616. sheet

  1617. for

  1618. the

  1619. weekend

  1620. but

  1621. I

  1622. was

  1623. a

  1624. failure

  1625. again

  1626. the

  1627. same

  1628. sin

  1629. that

  1630. I

  1631. hated

  1632. and

  1633. after

  1634. I

  1635. got

  1636. them

  1637. to

  1638. bed

  1639. that

  1640. night

  1641. I

  1642. sat

  1643. down

  1644. and

  1645. I

  1646. started

  1647. going

  1648. through

  1649. all

  1650. the

  1651. excuses

  1652. in

  1653. my

  1654. head

  1655. for

  1656. how

  1657. I

  1658. treated

  1659. them

  1660. why

  1661. I

  1662. was

  1663. still

  1664. a

  1665. great

  1666. dad

  1667. in

  1668. that

  1669. moment

  1670. but

  1671. pretty

  1672. quickly

  1673. I

  1674. saw

  1675. the

  1676. horror

  1677. of

  1678. my

  1679. sin

  1680. I

  1681. felt

  1682. like

  1683. such

  1684. a

  1685. miserable

  1686. failure

  1687. somebody

  1688. else

  1689. in

  1690. here

  1691. has

  1692. felt

  1693. that

  1694. way

  1695. before

  1696. I

  1697. think

  1698. I

  1699. was

  1700. just

  1701. ashamed

  1702. remember

  1703. this

  1704. was

  1705. my

  1706. dad

  1707. of

  1708. the

  1709. year

  1710. weekend

  1711. I

  1712. didn't

  1713. get

  1714. many

  1715. chances

  1716. like

  1717. this

  1718. I

  1719. built

  1720. myself

  1721. up

  1722. I

  1723. was

  1724. going

  1725. to

  1726. prove

  1727. it

  1728. to

  1729. myself

  1730. if

  1731. nobody

  1732. else

  1733. and

  1734. I

  1735. blew

  1736. it

  1737. I

  1738. was

  1739. so

  1740. disappointed

  1741. in

  1742. myself

  1743. I

  1744. deserved

  1745. none

  1746. of

  1747. God's

  1748. love

  1749. I

  1750. hated

  1751. myself

  1752. for

  1753. my

  1754. sin

  1755. and that

  1756. night

  1757. I had

  1758. to preach

  1759. the gospel

  1760. to myself

  1761. I had

  1762. to see

  1763. Jesus

  1764. on the

  1765. cross

  1766. becoming

  1767. a self

  1768. centered

  1769. dad

  1770. who yells

  1771. at his

  1772. kids

  1773. again

  1774. I

  1775. had

  1776. to see

  1777. what

  1778. happened

  1779. to him

  1780. because

  1781. of

  1782. that

  1783. sin

  1784. that

  1785. was

  1786. mine

  1787. and

  1788. then I

  1789. had to

  1790. see

  1791. God

  1792. forgiving

  1793. and

  1794. loving

  1795. me

  1796. right

  1797. there

  1798. because

  1799. of

  1800. Jesus

  1801. so

  1802. that

  1803. I

  1804. could

  1805. be

  1806. free

  1807. and

  1808. not

  1809. be

  1810. and

  1811. not

  1812. take

  1813. what

  1814. Jesus

  1815. was

  1816. taking

  1817. for

  1818. me

  1819. and

  1820. then

  1821. to

  1822. make

  1823. it

  1824. worse

  1825. as I

  1826. plotted

  1827. how to

  1828. teach

  1829. my girls

  1830. to be

  1831. respectful

  1832. the next

  1833. day

  1834. I

  1835. had

  1836. to

  1837. see

  1838. him

  1839. do

  1840. the

  1841. same

  1842. for

  1843. their

  1844. sin

  1845. I

  1846. had to

  1847. wait

  1848. until

  1849. the next

  1850. morning

  1851. to

  1852. apologize

  1853. to

  1854. my

  1855. girls

  1856. I

  1857. tell

  1858. you

  1859. if

  1860. you're

  1861. ever

  1862. hurting

  1863. in

  1864. your

  1865. sin

  1866. there

  1867. there's

  1868. very

  1869. few

  1870. balms

  1871. of

  1872. the

  1873. gospel

  1874. like

  1875. the

  1876. forgiveness

  1877. of

  1878. a

  1879. child

  1880. for

  1881. a

  1882. parent

  1883. to

  1884. have

  1885. your

  1886. child

  1887. forgive

  1888. you

  1889. to

  1890. show

  1891. the

  1892. love

  1893. of

  1894. God

  1895. to

  1896. you

  1897. we

  1898. agreed

  1899. that

  1900. they

  1901. still

  1902. needed

  1903. to be

  1904. disciplined

  1905. for

  1906. their

  1907. disrespect

  1908. but

  1909. I

  1910. asked

  1911. them

  1912. in the

  1913. same

  1914. moment

  1915. to help

  1916. me

  1917. remember

  1918. not to

  1919. yell at

  1920. them

  1921. but to

  1922. show them

  1923. God's

  1924. patient

  1925. love

  1926. and we

  1927. all were

  1928. free to

  1929. love each

  1930. other as

  1931. righteous

  1932. not in

  1933. how we

  1934. performed

  1935. on

  1936. Friday

  1937. but in

  1938. Christ

  1939. and in

  1940. how much

  1941. he

  1942. loved

  1943. us

  1944. which

  1945. is

  1946. much

  1947. more

  1948. special

  1949. than

  1950. that

  1951. of

  1952. the

  1953. year

  1954. weekend

  1955. I

  1956. had

  1957. planned

  1958. for

  1959. where

  1960. do

  1961. you

  1962. need

  1963. to

  1964. preach

  1965. the

  1966. gospel

  1967. to

  1968. yourself

  1969. what

  1970. sin

  1971. that

  1972. is

  1973. poisoning

  1974. your

  1975. heart

  1976. do

  1977. you

  1978. need

  1979. to

  1980. see

  1981. Jesus

  1982. on

  1983. the

  1984. cross

  1985. becoming

  1986. for

  1987. you

  1988. it's

  1989. a

  1990. painful

  1991. place

  1992. to

  1993. look

  1994. but

  1995. the

  1996. healing

  1997. you

  1998. find

  1999. in

  2000. the

  2001. place

  2002. of

  2003. the

  2004. shame

  2005. and

  2006. disgrace

  2007. you

  2008. deserve

  2009. is so

  2010. sweet

  2011. that

  2012. it

  2013. sets

  2014. you

  2015. free

  2016. and

  2017. sets

  2018. others

  2019. free

  2020. as

  2021. well

  2022. let me

  2023. pray

  2024. with

  2025. me

  2026. father

  2027. we are

  2028. gathered

  2029. here

  2030. as

  2031. a

  2032. community

  2033. of

  2034. great

  2035. sinners

  2036. we are

  2037. so

  2038. thankful

  2039. for

  2040. our

  2041. great

  2042. savior

  2043. bearing

  2044. shame

  2045. and

  2046. scoffing

  2047. rude

  2048. in

  2049. my

  2050. place

  2051. condemned

  2052. he

  2053. stood

  2054. I

  2055. deserve

  2056. to be

  2057. condemned

  2058. like

  2059. that

  2060. and he

  2061. didn't

  2062. he

  2063. sealed

  2064. my

  2065. pardon

  2066. with

  2067. his

  2068. blood

  2069. hallelujah

  2070. what a

  2071. savior

  2072. thank you

  2073. Jesus

  2074. that you

  2075. were lifted

  2076. up

  2077. to die

  2078. that you

  2079. cried

  2080. it is

  2081. finished

  2082. that all

  2083. of our

  2084. sin was

  2085. taken care

  2086. of

  2087. that you

  2088. became

  2089. sin

  2090. for us

  2091. might that

  2092. change our

  2093. hearts

  2094. give us

  2095. great joy

  2096. give us

  2097. great forgiveness

  2098. for others

  2099. make us

  2100. grateful for

  2101. how much you

  2102. love us
