  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. Amen.

  5. Last week we began a journey through the book of Daniel.

  6. We began that journey by reading about the defeat of God's people.

  7. His people suffering defeat against Babylon and King Nebuchadnezzar.

  8. So God's people are going to be taken into Babylon where the rest of the book occurs.

  9. Today Daniel and his friends are taken into exile in Babylon.

  10. They're moved there and we begin to deal then with the question of when in Babylon?

  11. How should we live?

  12. What does it look like for God's people living in Babylon?

  13. Here's this pluralistic culture much like the one we live in and God's people called to a singular devotion to Him.

  14. How?

  15. How can that happen?

  16. In some ways it's the age-old challenge of being in the world but not of the world.

  17. And there are at least four ways that Christians have approached this idea through the years.

  18. The first is to isolate, right?

  19. You're faced with this dilemma living in Babylon and one option is to isolate, to avoid all possible interaction with this culture.

  20. To avoid contact with the world whenever possible.

  21. Create a separate culture of your own that protects from the ills of the world and is entirely Christian.

  22. This approach values safety and assumes, incorrectly I would say, that all evil is out there.

  23. And we can, with some degree of success, avoid being defiled by avoiding being near the world.

  24. A second option is to fight.

  25. Even in an angry or belligerent way.

  26. Always being angry about everything and always seeking to push back.

  27. At every turn, the way I'm engaging the culture is by defeating it to gain control or power.

  28. This approach values control.

  29. It would seek to see Christians in the majority and would fight politically or socially

  30. to see Christian influence in the culture increase by being in charge.

  31. It's the we're going to win approach.

  32. We're going to be stronger than they are.

  33. Now, if you're among the older generations in this room this morning and you've lived most of your life in America

  34. and particularly in the southern Bible belt,

  35. some version of this approach is pretty much the air you breathe, right?

  36. That you may have grown up and not actually felt at all like you were living in Babylon.

  37. You may have felt very much like Christian principles ruled the day in many areas of society

  38. and in the way that you engaged.

  39. Christians have even used terms like moral majority

  40. to talk about the way we engage with the culture,

  41. that that's what we're going to have and that's how we'll live.

  42. But if you're among the younger generations in the room today,

  43. you've never experienced a world quite like that,

  44. even in Huntsville, Alabama.

  45. Even growing up here, you're much more accustomed to a culture that disagrees with

  46. or actively discourages your values and beliefs.

  47. Younger Christians, you may have noticed, are in general not particularly interested

  48. in striving to be in control of cultural institutions.

  49. But rather, they're working to remain credible and relevant

  50. as a minority in an increasingly dismissive and sometimes hostile culture

  51. that they're growing up in.

  52. And as they do that, the temptation for them is actually towards a third approach,

  53. which is to assimilate.

  54. To determine to be a part of the world in every way.

  55. To take a passive, go-with-the-flow stance on most issues

  56. and just hope to blend in and get along, right?

  57. Not to attract too much negative attention or too much criticism.

  58. This approach values acceptance.

  59. In the end, perhaps, as other generations may notice,

  60. may sometimes find themselves left with little distinctively Christian.

  61. No distinctively Christian message at all, perhaps.

  62. We all have personal tendencies as we think about how to engage, don't we?

  63. Some of us to isolate, some of us to fight, some of us to assimilate.

  64. But while there are moments where each of these approaches may be helpful,

  65. in general, none of them is fully biblical.

  66. Is there a fourth approach?

  67. Is there another way to engage in a culture like Babylon?

  68. Like ours?

  69. Daniel will show us one as we read chapter 1.

  70. And we will learn this,

  71. that because God is supremely valuable,

  72. we must maintain our distinctive identity in the world.

  73. Because God is supremely valuable,

  74. we must stay distinctive,

  75. maintain that distinctive identity while engaging in the world.

  76. Let's give attention to God's word

  77. and see what this looks like for his people here in Babylon.

  78. It's a lengthy section in Daniel 1,

  79. but we'll start at verse 3,

  80. after Nebuchadnezzar has conquered Israel.

  81. This is God's word.

  82. The wine that the king drank.

  83. They were to be educated for three years,

  84. and at the end of that time,

  85. they were to stand before the king.

  86. Among these were Daniel, Hananiah,

  87. Mishael, and Azariah of the tribe of Judah.

  88. And the chief of the eunuchs gave them names.

  89. Daniel he called Belteshazzar.

  90. Hananiah he called Shadrach.

  91. Mishael he called Meshach.

  92. And Azariah he called Abednego.

  93. But Daniel resolved that he would not defile himself

  94. with the king's food or with the wine that he drank.

  95. Therefore he asked the chief of the eunuchs

  96. to allow him not to defile himself.

  97. And God gave Daniel favor and compassion

  98. in the sight of the chief of the eunuchs.

  99. And the chief of the eunuchs said to Daniel,

  100. I fear my lord the king who assigned your food and your drink,

  101. for why should he see that you were in worse condition

  102. than the youths who are of your own age?

  103. So you would endanger my head with the king.

  104. Then Daniel said to the steward whom the chief of the eunuchs

  105. had assigned over Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,

  106. Test your servants for ten days.

  107. Let us be given vegetables to eat and water to drink.

  108. Then let our appearance and the appearance of the youths

  109. who eat the king's food be observed by you

  110. and deal with your servants according to what you see.

  111. So he listened to them in this matter

  112. and tested them for ten days.

  113. At the end of ten days it was seen

  114. that they were better in appearance and fatter in flesh

  115. than all the youths who ate the king's food.

  116. So the steward took away their food

  117. and the wine they were to drink

  118. and gave them vegetables.

  119. As for these four youths,

  120. God gave them learning and skill

  121. and all literature and wisdom.

  122. And Daniel had understanding

  123. and all visions and dreams.

  124. At the end of the time when the king had commanded

  125. that they should be brought in,

  126. the chief of the eunuchs brought them in

  127. before Nebuchadnezzar.

  128. And the king spoke with them

  129. and among all of them none was found

  130. like Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.

  131. Therefore they stood before the king.

  132. And in every matter of wisdom and understanding

  133. about which the king inquired of them,

  134. he found them ten times better

  135. than all the magicians and enchanters

  136. that were in all his kingdom.

  137. And Daniel was there until the first year

  138. of King Cyrus.

  139. Pray with me.

  140. Father, this is a familiar story

  141. for some of us.

  142. But it seems distant.

  143. It happened a long time ago.

  144. 600 B.C.

  145. Not a world we're familiar with.

  146. Would you teach us about yourself

  147. from your word this morning?

  148. Would you show us what you would have for us?

  149. This is your word

  150. and so we ask your spirit

  151. to teach us.

  152. Would you make our hearts open

  153. to what you would show us this morning?

  154. We ask it in Jesus' name.

  155. Amen.

  156. As the story opens here,

  157. what brings Daniel and his friends

  158. to Babylon

  159. is the king's plan

  160. of complete assimilation.

  161. It's in verses 3-7

  162. that we just read.

  163. The king has a plan

  164. for complete assimilation.

  165. Nebuchadnezzar wants to do what?

  166. He wants to cement his power

  167. over these newly conquered peoples,

  168. doesn't he?

  169. He wants to make sure

  170. that he's in power

  171. and that he stays in power

  172. by taking the best

  173. and the brightest of Israel

  174. and making them Babylonian

  175. in every way.

  176. Daniel and his friends

  177. are probably teenagers,

  178. by the way,

  179. when they are taken

  180. from their homes

  181. and dragged to Babylon.

  182. enrolled in Babylon Prep.

  183. The Babylonian public schools

  184. are well known

  185. for their excellence

  186. in academics.

  187. They're also well known

  188. for their excellence

  189. at inculcating

  190. the Babylonian worldview

  191. and way of life.

  192. So classes on literature

  193. and math

  194. and medicine,

  195. but also classes on omens,

  196. astrology,

  197. pagan religion,

  198. and others most likely.

  199. Don't miss that God,

  200. who is at work here,

  201. who we saw last week,

  202. is in control,

  203. has placed some of his beloved people

  204. right there.

  205. Right there

  206. in the world.

  207. The program of assimilation

  208. that they're to undergo

  209. includes new names,

  210. a new diet,

  211. new education,

  212. the best of everything

  213. that Babylon has to offer

  214. with the intent

  215. of communicating one message,

  216. one thing that the king wants

  217. these men

  218. who would serve

  219. before the king

  220. to know,

  221. the path

  222. to the things

  223. that are really valuable

  224. is to be like one of us.

  225. All those things

  226. you heard growing up

  227. in Israel,

  228. they're inferior.

  229. We've conquered them.

  230. That's not worthy

  231. of following.

  232. The path

  233. to the really valuable things

  234. is to be like us.

  235. You hear that message

  236. all the time,

  237. don't you?

  238. The path

  239. to what's really valuable

  240. is to be like us.

  241. Maybe you've been

  242. a part of a

  243. friend group,

  244. a workplace clique,

  245. a sorority

  246. that you've been engaged with

  247. and the reality

  248. is that backbiting

  249. and gossip

  250. and demeaning criticism

  251. of others

  252. is really the language

  253. of the land

  254. in this group.

  255. If you're going

  256. to be a part of it,

  257. if you're going

  258. to be in there

  259. getting or staying in

  260. requires compromising

  261. your commitment

  262. to Christ

  263. to get what's

  264. really valuable,

  265. to get in,

  266. to be a part of that.

  267. Caring for the marginalized

  268. will just get you

  269. marginalized.

  270. You can tell that.

  271. And then what good

  272. will you be,

  273. you ask yourself?

  274. Young people,

  275. some of you

  276. are going off

  277. to school

  278. and you're hearing

  279. a message there

  280. that if you're going

  281. to get what's

  282. really valuable,

  283. that if you're going

  284. to find love

  285. and what's really

  286. important in life,

  287. you will have to

  288. have a sexual morality

  289. like everyone else.

  290. It's just normal

  291. and expected

  292. these days,

  293. isn't it?

  294. The commitments

  295. that your parents

  296. have taught you

  297. as you've grown up

  298. are mocked

  299. as ridiculous.

  300. Nobody really

  301. lives that way

  302. anymore.

  303. That's silly,

  304. that's old-fashioned,

  305. that's out of date.

  306. And the relationships,

  307. the guy or the girl

  308. that you really need,

  309. this is the only way

  310. you can get it

  311. is to do

  312. what everyone else

  313. is doing.

  314. We all know

  315. how valuable it is

  316. to provide

  317. for our families,

  318. don't we?

  319. To have a good job

  320. and to keep it

  321. and to be able

  322. to provide,

  323. that's valuable,

  324. isn't it?

  325. It's very valuable.

  326. And many of us

  327. realize if we don't

  328. fudge the numbers

  329. like the rest

  330. of the people

  331. in the office,

  332. we'll lose the promotion

  333. or the bonus

  334. or the job.

  335. And then if we

  336. don't make the money,

  337. we won't be able

  338. to live in the right place

  339. or get the valuable things

  340. to protect our kids

  341. and that would be terrible

  342. and after all,

  343. it's just a very small

  344. compromise

  345. for such a big payoff

  346. to be able to provide

  347. for my family,

  348. right?

  349. We live in these places,

  350. don't we?

  351. Where does your heart

  352. receive that clear message?

  353. The path to the things

  354. that are really valuable

  355. is to be like everyone else.

  356. You know,

  357. there's a reason

  358. my parents always

  359. used to say to me,

  360. if everybody else

  361. jumps off a bridge,

  362. are you gonna jump

  363. off a bridge too?

  364. Anybody else's parents

  365. ever say that to them?

  366. Why did we say that a lot?

  367. I mean,

  368. it sounds silly,

  369. but honestly,

  370. you know,

  371. I was a smart

  372. and sarcastic

  373. little kid sometimes.

  374. Sometimes I thought

  375. to myself

  376. but didn't have the guts

  377. to say it,

  378. yeah,

  379. maybe I would.

  380. I mean,

  381. because yeah,

  382. if everybody else

  383. is doing it,

  384. maybe they've found

  385. what's really valuable.

  386. Maybe they're

  387. in the right place

  388. and they've figured

  389. something out

  390. and I wanna,

  391. at least I'd be,

  392. I won't be alone.

  393. At least I'll be a part

  394. of the group

  395. even if they're wrong.

  396. You've felt that way.

  397. There's safety in numbers,

  398. right?

  399. Daniel determines

  400. not necessarily.

  401. Starting at verse eight,

  402. we see Daniel's commitment

  403. to his distinctive identity.

  404. His commitment

  405. to his distinctive identity.

  406. Look at verse eight.

  407. What does Daniel do?

  408. But Daniel,

  409. faced with this plan

  410. of assimilation,

  411. resolved that he would

  412. not defile himself

  413. with the king's food

  414. or with the wine

  415. that he drank.

  416. Daniel makes a decision.

  417. I'm not going to defile myself

  418. in that way.

  419. He doesn't isolate himself,

  420. does he?

  421. He doesn't try to just

  422. avoid Babylon altogether

  423. and to escape

  424. from Babylonian education

  425. or politics.

  426. No, he spends

  427. the rest of his life in it.

  428. He doesn't fight.

  429. He doesn't angrily attack

  430. those in charge

  431. of the program

  432. and seek to take over

  433. and be in charge.

  434. But he doesn't assimilate either.

  435. He doesn't just go along

  436. with this complete indoctrination

  437. into Babylonian culture,

  438. full loyalty to the king

  439. and forgetting his Jewish heritage.

  440. He doesn't do that.

  441. Instead, he resolves

  442. not to defile himself.

  443. He commits to maintaining

  444. his distinctive identity

  445. in some way

  446. even in the midst of that.

  447. And so it's a fair question

  448. to say,

  449. why here with the food and wine?

  450. Why is it there

  451. that Daniel draws the line?

  452. You may think perhaps

  453. that it's because

  454. of Jewish dietary laws

  455. that Daniel,

  456. these things would be unclean

  457. and so Daniel decides

  458. he won't eat them.

  459. That's actually not true

  460. in this case.

  461. It wouldn't make sense

  462. of why the wine

  463. would be included

  464. as not part of that.

  465. And later in Daniel,

  466. we actually see him

  467. probably eating

  468. some of this very food.

  469. So it seems like

  470. it wasn't black and white

  471. like that.

  472. You may think very reasonably

  473. that the food

  474. was offered to idols.

  475. And so it was important

  476. for Daniel

  477. not to partake of food

  478. offered to idols.

  479. Except that that really

  480. is not the context

  481. we're in here.

  482. Plus, the veggies

  483. probably would have been

  484. the same.

  485. And he's happy

  486. to partake of those.

  487. The Bible doesn't tell us

  488. why specifically

  489. Daniel drew the line here

  490. except that he determined

  491. not to defile himself

  492. in this way.

  493. So the particular reason

  494. why must not be the issue

  495. but rather that Daniel

  496. determined to maintain

  497. his identity

  498. as a follower of Yahweh

  499. in some way

  500. and not give himself

  501. wholly over

  502. to dependence on

  503. and commitment

  504. to the king.

  505. Just taking it all in

  506. and just being loyal

  507. to the king.

  508. It's a foothold

  509. in that sense

  510. for Daniel

  511. in the midst of the program

  512. of complete assimilation.

  513. A way not to forget

  514. who he is.

  515. Notice just a few things

  516. about the way

  517. that Daniel engages

  518. the ungodly culture

  519. at this point.

  520. He's not fearful,

  521. is he?

  522. But he's bold.

  523. Determining that he would

  524. take a stand here

  525. and going straight

  526. to the chief of the eunuchs

  527. with his request.

  528. He's willing to risk,

  529. isn't he?

  530. It's risky.

  531. Perhaps even risking

  532. his life to suggest

  533. this idea.

  534. Verse 10 tells us

  535. that it could cost

  536. the chief of the eunuchs

  537. his head.

  538. So it certainly was

  539. risky for Daniel.

  540. In asking this though,

  541. he's humble,

  542. isn't he?

  543. Not pridefully insisting

  544. that he knows better

  545. but asking permission.

  546. And he's respectful.

  547. Personally and patiently

  548. engaging two different officials

  549. to ask for their help

  550. rather than taking to Facebook

  551. as you would probably expect him

  552. to have done

  553. to rant about

  554. the ridiculous new program

  555. and the fools in charge of it.

  556. But he doesn't do that.

  557. Finally, he's dependent.

  558. Verse 9 says,

  559. and God gave.

  560. You hear an echo

  561. from verse 2 last week?

  562. And God gave.

  563. It actually happens again

  564. in this chapter.

  565. Three times in the first chapter.

  566. It'll happen in verse 17.

  567. We'll see in a minute.

  568. And God gave.

  569. Who's still in charge?

  570. God is in charge.

  571. God is the one

  572. who gives Daniel favor

  573. in the eyes of these foreign officials

  574. who would really have had no reason

  575. to listen to Daniel.

  576. He's engaging in a foreign culture

  577. in a distinctive way.

  578. In a way that's consistent

  579. with his identity

  580. as a follower of Yahweh.

  581. And in a way that is not forcing

  582. his own agenda

  583. to become reality

  584. but is rather completely dependent

  585. on God to grant him success.

  586. It won't happen

  587. if God doesn't give him favor.

  588. And these may seem like

  589. small things here

  590. that we're talking about.

  591. In a decision not to eat the food

  592. and drink the wine.

  593. But in the small things,

  594. if you know the story

  595. of the rest of Daniel,

  596. you know God's offering here,

  597. Daniel and his friends,

  598. a training ground

  599. for idols

  600. and fiery furnaces

  601. and lion's dens.

  602. A training ground

  603. that allows them

  604. to be distinctive now

  605. in preparation

  606. for even more difficult days

  607. that lie ahead.

  608. Friends, as followers

  609. of Jesus Christ,

  610. we have a distinctive identity.

  611. We are in Christ.

  612. And that is to be

  613. what primarily defines us

  614. in every facet of life.

  615. That means, for example,

  616. that we find value

  617. in that we are loved by God

  618. and adopted into His family.

  619. So we are distinctively

  620. not looking for our value

  621. in the approval of others.

  622. In worldly success

  623. and accumulating the things

  624. of the world.

  625. In the comfort

  626. and the fame

  627. that we might otherwise

  628. chase after.

  629. We rest in the grace of God

  630. for ourselves

  631. and extend that grace

  632. to others

  633. even at great cost

  634. to ourselves.

  635. And that is to be distinctive.

  636. In fact, it is distinctive

  637. if you live and love

  638. others like that.

  639. The point of Daniel 1

  640. is not to tell you

  641. that it's okay

  642. to change your name

  643. but it's not okay

  644. to change what you eat.

  645. That's not the point

  646. of this chapter.

  647. It's not a detailed list

  648. of do's and don'ts

  649. for living in Babylon.

  650. Do these particular things

  651. but make sure

  652. you avoid the others.

  653. It's a reminder here

  654. of the primacy

  655. of our identity

  656. in Christ.

  657. That we sacrifice

  658. that distinctive identity

  659. and blend in

  660. with our loyalties

  661. and priorities

  662. looking just like

  663. the world's

  664. at our own peril.

  665. We really can't go

  666. any further

  667. without stopping

  668. to admit

  669. how easy that is.

  670. Right?

  671. How easy would it have been

  672. for Daniel

  673. just to go along

  674. with one more thing.

  675. Right?

  676. Everybody else

  677. is a part of the program.

  678. It would have been

  679. very easy.

  680. It wasn't even

  681. best we can tell

  682. individually more evil

  683. than any other part

  684. of the program.

  685. It didn't stick out

  686. as the one thing

  687. to avoid.

  688. How easy is it

  689. just to give in

  690. in one more area?

  691. Just to say

  692. I'll buy what you buy

  693. and pursue what you pursue

  694. and I'll watch

  695. what you watch

  696. and I'll say

  697. what you say

  698. and eventually

  699. over time

  700. just forget

  701. that my life

  702. is to be shaped

  703. distinctively

  704. by who I am

  705. in Christ

  706. not by just

  707. receiving the air

  708. that I breathe

  709. around me

  710. every day.

  711. It's so easy

  712. isn't it

  713. just to go

  714. with the flow.

  715. Some days

  716. I feel like

  717. that's all

  718. I've got the energy

  719. for.

  720. Not to determine

  721. to do anything

  722. at all

  723. just kind of

  724. whatever the culture

  725. seems to do.

  726. It's like going

  727. through Atlanta

  728. at the flow

  729. of traffic

  730. and you can look

  731. up and not even

  732. realize you were

  733. going 80

  734. in a 55

  735. right?

  736. It's natural

  737. it's easy

  738. it feels right.

  739. It's so hard

  740. to resolve

  741. not to defile

  742. yourself

  743. to be committed

  744. to your

  745. distinctive identity

  746. to be driven

  747. in everything you do

  748. by who you are

  749. in Christ.

  750. That's hard.

  751. You can't do it

  752. without trusting

  753. God's provision

  754. of lasting

  755. blessing.

  756. That's what

  757. we see here

  758. at the end

  759. of the chapter.

  760. We see again

  761. in verse 17

  762. that God

  763. gave

  764. this time

  765. blessing them

  766. with learning

  767. and skill

  768. and their

  769. training

  770. and Daniel

  771. particularly

  772. with expertise

  773. and vision

  774. and dreams

  775. so they far

  776. surpass all

  777. the other youths

  778. in the king's

  779. training right?

  780. Now that seems

  781. like a triumph

  782. doesn't it?

  783. There it is

  784. they've conquered

  785. they've won

  786. everything's good

  787. stories over

  788. and there is

  789. blessing

  790. there is a

  791. temporal blessing

  792. from God

  793. God's people

  794. are honored

  795. but things are

  796. not all good

  797. for Daniel

  798. and his friends

  799. are they?

  800. And they experience

  801. some of that

  802. temporal protection

  803. blessing from God

  804. yes they do

  805. but also

  806. quite a bit

  807. of suffering

  808. they spend

  809. the rest

  810. of their lives

  811. in exile

  812. away from

  813. the promised land

  814. facing persecution

  815. at the hands

  816. of jealous

  817. colleagues

  818. and ungodly

  819. kings

  820. listen the

  821. lasting blessing

  822. is not a few

  823. good days

  824. in Nebuchadnezzar's

  825. court

  826. it can't be

  827. can it?

  828. But the thing

  829. that's really

  830. worth it for

  831. Daniel enough

  832. to risk his

  833. life in this

  834. case can't

  835. just be a few

  836. good days of

  837. being smarter

  838. than the guys

  839. around him

  840. the lasting

  841. blessing is

  842. God

  843. himself

  844. we see

  845. that relationship

  846. they have

  847. with God

  848. is highlighted

  849. there in

  850. verse 17

  851. as God

  852. gives them

  853. learning

  854. and understanding

  855. particularly

  856. Daniel

  857. with the

  858. dreams

  859. and visions

  860. where does

  861. that come

  862. from?

  863. Whenever it

  864. comes up

  865. the interpretation

  866. of the dream

  867. comes from

  868. God

  869. doesn't it?

  870. It shows

  871. that Daniel

  872. understands

  873. God's heart

  874. that he's

  875. a man

  876. of God

  877. that he's

  878. in relationship

  879. with God

  880. you see

  881. the gift

  882. with lasting

  883. value

  884. is knowing

  885. God

  886. a relationship

  887. with God

  888. is lasting

  889. and is

  890. strengthened

  891. by the

  892. commitment

  893. to that

  894. primary

  895. and distinctive

  896. identity

  897. as his

  898. child

  899. in the midst

  900. of temptation

  901. to compromise

  902. or assimilate

  903. it strengthens

  904. the relationship

  905. and the truly

  906. valuable thing

  907. is being his

  908. and eternally

  909. being his

  910. look at verse 21

  911. again

  912. didn't probably

  913. catch your

  914. attention

  915. Daniel was there

  916. until the first

  917. year of

  918. King Cyrus

  919. until the first

  920. year of King Cyrus

  921. we know at that

  922. point in time

  923. Daniel would have

  924. to be in his

  925. 80s

  926. or older

  927. that's his

  928. entire life

  929. right?

  930. A note here

  931. about King Cyrus

  932. to wrap up

  933. the first chapter

  934. that we said

  935. is about two

  936. kingdoms in

  937. conflict

  938. the kingdom

  939. of Israel

  940. and the kingdom

  941. of Babylon

  942. Yahweh

  943. and Nebuchadnezzar

  944. they're in

  945. conflict

  946. who's greater

  947. it appears

  948. at the beginning

  949. that Babylon

  950. is greater

  951. and that Yahweh

  952. is defeated

  953. right?

  954. That's what we

  955. saw last week

  956. but Cyrus

  957. is not just

  958. another king

  959. who steps in

  960. after Nebuchadnezzar

  961. is gone

  962. Cyrus is a

  963. Persian

  964. king

  965. his nation

  966. has conquered

  967. Babylon

  968. even in

  969. Daniel's

  970. lifetime

  971. Daniel

  972. is still

  973. there

  974. still standing

  975. still

  976. serving

  977. the king

  978. kings pass

  979. kingdoms

  980. pass

  981. but God

  982. remains

  983. in control

  984. knowing him

  985. therefore

  986. is of

  987. much

  988. greater value

  989. than getting

  990. in with

  991. Nebuchadnezzar

  992. do you see that?

  993. if you just

  994. got in with

  995. Nebuchadnezzar

  996. he's gonna be

  997. gone

  998. it's gonna

  999. pass

  1000. but knowing

  1001. God

  1002. is much

  1003. greater

  1004. value

  1005. being connected

  1006. to his son

  1007. is of much

  1008. greater value

  1009. than being

  1010. connected

  1011. to the power

  1012. players of

  1013. society

  1014. that's the

  1015. eternal

  1016. perspective

  1017. that God

  1018. truly

  1019. lasts

  1020. even kings

  1021. pass

  1022. people

  1023. people who

  1024. seem to be

  1025. powerful

  1026. and valuable

  1027. and will really

  1028. get us

  1029. somewhere

  1030. and they're

  1031. gone

  1032. but

  1033. God

  1034. remains

  1035. kids

  1036. that's something

  1037. that's hard

  1038. to wrap your

  1039. minds around

  1040. God being

  1041. eternal

  1042. God lasting

  1043. forever

  1044. that's

  1045. that's hard

  1046. to picture

  1047. sometimes

  1048. isn't it?

  1049. but that's

  1050. what's so

  1051. important

  1052. in this

  1053. passage

  1054. to

  1055. remember

  1056. God

  1057. is

  1058. so valuable

  1059. that knowing

  1060. him

  1061. is a

  1062. greater

  1063. treasure

  1064. than having

  1065. all the

  1066. treasures

  1067. of the

  1068. world

  1069. kids

  1070. that's

  1071. our

  1072. thing

  1073. to

  1074. write

  1075. down

  1076. about

  1077. God

  1078. this

  1079. morning

  1080. it's

  1081. it's

  1082. what

  1083. Daniel

  1084. learns

  1085. about

  1086. God

  1087. and what

  1088. enables

  1089. Daniel

  1090. to take

  1091. the stand

  1092. that he

  1093. does here

  1094. in chapter

  1095. one

  1096. God is

  1097. so valuable

  1098. that knowing

  1099. him is a

  1100. greater

  1101. treasure

  1102. than having

  1103. all the

  1104. treasures

  1105. of the

  1106. world

  1107. the most

  1108. valuable

  1109. thing

  1110. is being

  1111. his

  1112. eternally

  1113. remember

  1114. y'all

  1115. in Christ

  1116. in that

  1117. distinctive

  1118. identity

  1119. what do we

  1120. have

  1121. we

  1122. forgotten

  1123. we have

  1124. every

  1125. spiritual

  1126. blessing

  1127. the ones

  1128. that

  1129. really

  1130. last

  1131. we're

  1132. children

  1133. of the

  1134. king

  1135. the

  1136. everlasting

  1137. king

  1138. we have

  1139. an

  1140. eternal

  1141. inheritance

  1142. that can

  1143. never

  1144. fade

  1145. away

  1146. listen

  1147. I know

  1148. all the

  1149. things

  1150. that we

  1151. long

  1152. for

  1153. seem

  1154. so

  1155. valuable

  1156. and the

  1157. way to

  1158. get them

  1159. seems

  1160. so

  1161. simple

  1162. just

  1163. blend

  1164. in

  1165. and get

  1166. ahead

  1167. just

  1168. blend

  1169. in

  1170. and get

  1171. love

  1172. just

  1173. blend

  1174. in

  1175. and get

  1176. what you

  1177. really

  1178. want

  1179. and need

  1180. but when

  1181. you weigh

  1182. things in

  1183. eternal

  1184. scales

  1185. there's no

  1186. comparison

  1187. with the

  1188. relationship

  1189. you have

  1190. with God

  1191. and the

  1192. distinctive

  1193. identity

  1194. that you

  1195. have

  1196. in Christ

  1197. it's

  1198. that

  1199. grace

  1200. that

  1201. gift

  1202. that

  1203. he

  1204. gives

  1205. us

  1206. that

  1207. enables

  1208. us

  1209. to

  1210. remain

  1211. committed

  1212. to the

  1213. one

  1214. who

  1215. has

  1216. committed

  1217. himself

  1218. to

  1219. us

  1220. I want

  1221. to close

  1222. by talking

  1223. from my

  1224. heart

  1225. to the

  1226. younger

  1227. generation

  1228. in the

  1229. room

  1230. this

  1231. morning

  1232. that's

  1233. those

  1234. of us

  1235. I don't

  1236. know

  1237. maybe

  1238. south

  1239. of our

  1240. 40s

  1241. something

  1242. like that

  1243. you can

  1244. be a part

  1245. of the

  1246. group

  1247. if you

  1248. want

  1249. if you

  1250. know

  1251. you're

  1252. not

  1253. you can

  1254. listen

  1255. in

  1256. anyway

  1257. all of

  1258. us

  1259. who

  1260. Lord

  1261. willing

  1262. are

  1263. going

  1264. to be

  1265. around

  1266. when

  1267. a few

  1268. kings

  1269. pass

  1270. you know

  1271. I wasn't

  1272. a teenager

  1273. too long

  1274. ago

  1275. sometimes I

  1276. think it

  1277. was just

  1278. yesterday

  1279. but even

  1280. now in

  1281. my 30s

  1282. I remember

  1283. and still

  1284. say to

  1285. myself

  1286. some of

  1287. the same

  1288. things I

  1289. used to

  1290. say as

  1291. a teenager

  1292. one of

  1293. those that

  1294. I find

  1295. saying to

  1296. myself

  1297. is you

  1298. know what

  1299. I'll

  1300. follow

  1301. Christ

  1302. later

  1303. in that

  1304. area of

  1305. my life

  1306. I'll be

  1307. committed

  1308. to Christ

  1309. later

  1310. because to

  1311. be quite

  1312. honest with

  1313. you there's

  1314. so much

  1315. going on

  1316. there are

  1317. so many

  1318. areas of

  1319. life and

  1320. I am so

  1321. busy just

  1322. one thing

  1323. at a time

  1324. you know

  1325. what I'll

  1326. deal with

  1327. that another

  1328. time

  1329. I'll

  1330. follow

  1331. Christ

  1332. later

  1333. you know

  1334. what I've

  1335. realized after

  1336. telling myself

  1337. that for

  1338. a lot

  1339. of

  1340. years

  1341. it only

  1342. costs

  1343. more

  1344. later

  1345. to have

  1346. that

  1347. distinctive

  1348. identity

  1349. the cost

  1350. keeps going

  1351. up

  1352. not

  1353. down

  1354. the cost

  1355. of following

  1356. Christ

  1357. isn't going

  1358. down

  1359. in our

  1360. culture

  1361. if you

  1362. won't pay

  1363. it now

  1364. you won't

  1365. pay it

  1366. later

  1367. if you

  1368. won't

  1369. sacrifice

  1370. for Christ

  1371. now

  1372. you won't

  1373. sacrifice

  1374. later

  1375. that's

  1376. what God

  1377. has taught

  1378. me

  1379. don't say

  1380. to yourself

  1381. after college

  1382. after I get

  1383. to go

  1384. really enjoy

  1385. my life

  1386. then I'll

  1387. follow God's

  1388. model for

  1389. morality

  1390. after I

  1391. get to have

  1392. my fun

  1393. don't say

  1394. to yourself

  1395. you know

  1396. after I get

  1397. the job

  1398. that I

  1399. really need

  1400. once I've

  1401. got that

  1402. job

  1403. then I'll

  1404. start

  1405. working

  1406. honestly

  1407. and treating

  1408. others

  1409. respectfully

  1410. that's when

  1411. I'll do

  1412. it

  1413. don't say

  1414. to yourself

  1415. you know

  1416. what

  1417. after

  1418. after we

  1419. finally get

  1420. through this

  1421. season

  1422. and really

  1423. get settled

  1424. then I'll

  1425. start making

  1426. my family

  1427. the priority

  1428. that they

  1429. should be

  1430. and loving

  1431. them the way

  1432. that God

  1433. tells me

  1434. to love

  1435. them

  1436. don't say

  1437. to yourself

  1438. after I

  1439. get my

  1440. kids out

  1441. of the

  1442. house

  1443. take good

  1444. care of

  1445. them

  1446. protect

  1447. them

  1448. and get

  1449. them out

  1450. of the

  1451. house

  1452. then I'll

  1453. have a

  1454. zeal for

  1455. the lost

  1456. like you've

  1457. never seen

  1458. then I'm

  1459. really going

  1460. to care

  1461. about that

  1462. y'all I want

  1463. to stop

  1464. saying those

  1465. things

  1466. I need you

  1467. to help

  1468. me stop

  1469. saying those

  1470. things to

  1471. myself

  1472. it's not

  1473. going to

  1474. cost

  1475. less

  1476. and in

  1477. these early

  1478. small

  1479. decisions

  1480. we begin

  1481. to set the

  1482. pattern for

  1483. our lives

  1484. for future

  1485. decisions

  1486. here's how

  1487. it works

  1488. if getting

  1489. what's really

  1490. valuable

  1491. in life

  1492. requires

  1493. setting God

  1494. aside now

  1495. why in the

  1496. world would

  1497. that change

  1498. later

  1499. if getting

  1500. what's really

  1501. valuable

  1502. requires setting

  1503. God aside

  1504. I'm not going

  1505. to change

  1506. that later

  1507. and bring

  1508. him back

  1509. in

  1510. in other

  1511. words if

  1512. God's not

  1513. worth it

  1514. now he

  1515. won't be

  1516. then either

  1517. but if you

  1518. decide to be

  1519. distinctive

  1520. now if you

  1521. find following

  1522. Jesus to be

  1523. worth it

  1524. now even

  1525. at great

  1526. cost he

  1527. will be

  1528. worth it

  1529. it will be

  1530. worth it

  1531. again

  1532. later

  1533. because when

  1534. we say the

  1535. cost of

  1536. following Jesus

  1537. of being

  1538. distinctive in

  1539. that identity

  1540. is not going

  1541. down that

  1542. means something

  1543. else has to

  1544. change doesn't

  1545. it if that's

  1546. true you know

  1547. what has to

  1548. happen God

  1549. has to become

  1550. more valuable

  1551. to us doesn't

  1552. he if that

  1553. cost is going

  1554. to go up he's

  1555. got to become

  1556. more valuable

  1557. faster and

  1558. more consistently

  1559. remember what

  1560. said of Moses

  1561. in Hebrews 11

  1562. by faith Moses

  1563. when he was

  1564. grown up

  1565. refused to be

  1566. called the son

  1567. of Pharaoh's

  1568. daughter choosing

  1569. rather to

  1570. be mistreated

  1571. with the people

  1572. of God than

  1573. to enjoy the

  1574. fleeting pleasures

  1575. of sin

  1576. he considered

  1577. the reproach of

  1578. Christ greater

  1579. wealth than the

  1580. treasures of

  1581. Egypt for he was

  1582. looking to the

  1583. reward because he

  1584. had an eternal

  1585. perspective he

  1586. considered the

  1587. reproach of

  1588. Christ greater

  1589. wealth than the

  1590. treasures of

  1591. Egypt y'all

  1592. that's the choice

  1593. we're going to be

  1594. making next

  1595. generation the

  1596. choice will be

  1597. the reproach of

  1598. Christ

  1599. over the

  1600. treasures of

  1601. Egypt it

  1602. will cost and

  1603. Moses said even

  1604. reproach with

  1605. Christ is greater

  1606. value than the

  1607. treasures of

  1608. Egypt it reminds

  1609. me of Jesus when

  1610. he's tempted by

  1611. Satan what's he

  1612. tempted to do to

  1613. find control to

  1614. find comfort Satan's

  1615. way rather than God's

  1616. way and Jesus says

  1617. God is so valuable

1618. he is so worth it

  1619. that I'll choose the

1620. path that I know at

1621. the end of it is what

  1622. waiting for me a

  1623. cross torment and

  1624. pain and rejection by

  1625. my father is worth

  1626. it Jesus says it's

  1627. going to cost

  1628. something and it's

  1629. worth it to choose

  1630. that path he says

1631. God is the treasure he

  1632. is the one of

  1633. lasting value

  1634. knowing God himself

  1635. is the treasure that

  1636. is most precious

  1637. solid joys and

  1638. lasting treasure

  1639. none but Zion's

  1640. children know

1641. so that's in front of

1642. us if we're going to

  1643. be anything like what

1644. God intends for us as

  1645. his church here at

  1646. Southwood in the years

  1647. to come if we're

  1648. going to be God's

  1649. agent of changing the

  1650. world don't you want

1651. to be a part of that

  1652. don't you want to be a

1653. part of God's agency to

  1654. change the world to

  1655. fill every person in

  1656. every corner of

  1657. creation with his

  1658. glory that's what he's

1659. doing and he wants us

1660. to be a part of it if

1661. we're going to get to

1662. do that we will have to

  1663. learn together and we

1664. will have to help each

  1665. other remember in the

1666. hard times that God is

  1667. supremely and eternally

  1668. valuable pray with me

1669. God we need your help

  1670. for that there's so

  1671. many other things in

  1672. our hearts that seem

  1673. more valuable and that

1674. we want we want to be a

  1675. community of people we

1676. want to be your body that

  1677. truly believes that you're

  1678. worth whatever cost you

1679. might ask us to pay that

  1680. truly believes that the

1681. people who have yet to

  1682. meet you are worth

  1683. whatever cost we would

1684. pay to show your love to

1685. them we just confess that

1686. many days it's not true

1687. many days our choices are

1688. for ourselves and our own

1689. comfort and father I pray

1690. that you would by your

  1691. grace make yourself so

1692. precious in our hearts so

1693. valuable in our eyes that

1694. everything else would pale in

1695. comparison I pray that you

1696. would make the song we're

  1697. about to sing increasingly

1698. true of us would you make

1699. Jesus more valuable to us than

1700. anything else that we would be

  1701. forever different that the

1702. world would be changed because

1703. Jesus was indeed the pearl of

1704. great price and we did

1705. anything to have him and to

1706. share him with others do that

1707. work we ask in his name amen
