  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. Wonderful, wonderful song.

  5. Man, you get a song like that, new members joining the church and being baptized, just

  6. makes you want to skip the sermon and go home, doesn't it?

  7. It does make you want to do that, doesn't it?

  8. Yeah, me too.

  9. Turn with me though to Daniel chapter 2.

    Daniel 2 chapter mention

  10. It is needful for us to hear from God's Word.

  11. Last week we began to look at what it's like for God's people to live in Babylon, to be

  12. engaged in a pluralistic culture in such a way that we maintain a singular devotion to

  13. God as His distinctive people.

  14. Last week we saw that it was absolutely essential to have a proper perspective on what's valuable,

  15. to know that God is supremely and eternally valuable above all the treasures of the world.

  16. Today in this next scene we'll see how important it is to have a proper perspective also on strength,

  17. on strength and where it really comes from.

  18. What happens here in chapter 2 is Daniel finds himself in another tense situation in relationship

  19. to a powerful and ungodly king.

  20. Nebuchadnezzar has a dream that troubles him.

  21. He's bothered by it and he demands that the magicians and sorcerers of Babylon tell him not only what it means,

  22. but tell him what the dream actually was.

  23. And his wise men and magicians, some of them come to him and say,

  24. King, we can't do that.

  25. That's not how this works.

  26. You tell us the dream and then we tell you what it means.

  27. And Nebuchadnezzar says, if that's the way it is, all of you will be killed.

  28. He commands the execution of all the wise men in Babylon,

  29. which includes by this point Daniel and his friends.

  30. So the captain of the king's guard comes to Daniel and he comes to execute him with his sword.

  31. Daniel slows him down, calls a prayer meeting,

  32. receives the dream and the interpretation from God,

  33. praises God for that,

  34. and then heads to tell the king what he has learned.

  35. We will come back to look more closely at the parts of the story I just ran through really quickly there.

  36. But all of that happens before we learn the dream and its meaning.

  37. I'll read that part to you from God's word in Daniel 2, beginning in verse 31.

  38. This is Daniel speaking to Nebuchadnezzar.

  39. You saw, O king, and behold, a great image.

  40. This image mighty and of exceeding brightness stood before you and its appearance was frightening.

  41. The head of this image was of fine gold, its chest and arms of silver,

  42. its middle and thighs of bronze, its legs of iron, its feet partly of iron and partly of clay.

  43. As you looked, a stone was cut out by no human hand,

  44. and it struck the image on its feet of iron and clay and broke them in pieces.

  45. Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver, and the gold all together were broken in pieces

  46. and became like the chaff of the summer threshing floors.

  47. And the wind carried them away so that not a trace of them could be found.

  48. But the stone that struck the image became a great mountain and filled the whole earth.

  49. This was the dream.

  50. Now we will tell the king its interpretation.

  51. You, O king, the king of kings, to whom the God of heaven has given the kingdom,

  52. the power, and the might, and the glory,

  53. and into whose hand he has given wherever they dwell the children of man,

  54. the beasts of the field, and the birds of the heavens,

  55. making you rule over them all, you are the head of gold.

  56. Another kingdom inferior to you shall arise after you,

  57. and yet a third kingdom of bronze which shall rule over all the earth.

  58. And there shall be a fourth kingdom, strong as iron,

  59. because iron breaks to pieces and shatters all things.

  60. And like iron that crushes, it shall break and crush all these.

  61. And as you saw the feet and toes partly of potter's clay and partly of iron,

  62. it shall be a divided kingdom.

  63. But some of the firmness of iron shall be in it,

  64. just as you saw iron mixed with the soft clay.

  65. And as the toes of the feet were partly iron and partly clay,

  66. so the kingdom shall be partly strong and partly brittle.

  67. As you saw the iron mixed with soft clay,

  68. so they will mix with one another in marriage,

  69. but they will not hold together just as iron does not mix with clay.

  70. And in the days of those kings,

  71. the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed,

  72. nor shall the kingdom be left to another people.

  73. It shall break in pieces all these kingdoms and bring them to an end,

  74. and it shall stand forever.

  75. Just as you saw that a stone was cut from a mountain by no human hand,

  76. and that it broke in pieces the iron,

  77. the bronze, the clay, the silver, and the gold.

  78. A great God has made known to the king what shall be after this.

  79. The dream is certain,

  80. and its interpretation sure.

  81. Thus far God's holy word,

  82. let's pray and ask for his help in understanding it.

  83. Father, it is your word,

  84. and we come as those unfamiliar with dreams and interpretations and prophecies,

  85. but also as those very familiar with the challenges of living in a world

  86. that doesn't share our beliefs,

  87. and sometimes is hostile to our values,

  88. and approaches things different from how you have directed us.

  89. And so we ask for your help that you would teach us

  90. what we need to know in order to live and to love and to serve

  91. where you have placed us.

  92. We believe you have placed us here and called us here.

  93. We believe by your spirit you will give us what we need for that,

  94. and so God, would you do that as we look to you.

  95. It is your word we would wish to hear this morning.

  96. Speak to us by your spirit.

  97. We ask in Jesus' name.

  98. Amen.

  99. When I was growing up,

  100. I would occasionally catch part of an episode

  101. of the World's Strongest Man competition on ESPN.

  102. It was one of those things that I sometimes slowed down on,

  103. and one of the names I remember hearing and seeing

  104. was the name Magnus Samuelson.

  105. Magnus Samuelson is pictured here.

  106. Quite a guy, isn't he?

  107. I mean, he actually holds the record

  108. for the most times participating

  109. in the World's Strongest Man finals of this competition.

  110. And of course, his name is Magnus, right?

  111. Great, mighty, and he looks the part.

  112. Magnus won the World's Strongest Man competition

  113. one of those years in 1998.

  114. Pretty impressive guy, don't you think?

  115. Looks pretty strong, especially behind me.

  116. He looks pretty sharp.

  117. But even the year he won,

  118. his strength had limits.

  119. He didn't pull that truck forever.

  120. He didn't hold that log up above his head forever.

  121. However, his strength eventually gave out.

  122. He faced his limits.

  123. He ran out of strength.

  124. In many ways, Nebuchadnezzar was the Magnus Samuelson

  125. of his day, the world's strongest man.

  126. He was the ruler over the glorious kingdom of Babylon,

  127. an ever-expanding kingdom at the time,

  128. full of human learning and accomplishment,

  129. featuring the hanging gardens of Babylon,

  130. one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, right?

  131. An amazing kingdom.

  132. And who's at the top?

  133. Nebuchadnezzar.

  134. He holds the lives of thousands and thousands of people

  135. in his not-so-safe hands.

  136. A very strong, very impressive guy.

  137. But what God is telling Nebuchadnezzar in this dream

  138. is that as impressive as his strength

  139. and the strength of his kingdom is,

  140. it is ultimately very limited.

  141. Like all other human sources of strength,

  142. his kingdom is a false source of strength

  143. and that it won't last.

  144. Daniel is clear in explaining the dream to the king

  145. how outwardly impressive the kingdom of Babylon is.

  146. He makes it very clear.

  147. Look at verse 31 that we read earlier.

  148. It says,

  149. You saw, O king, a great image.

  150. It's a mighty one with exceeding brightness.

  151. It's frightening when you look at,

  152. and the head is of fine gold.

  153. And as you keep reading down to the interpretation,

  154. which, by the way,

  155. how nice is it to have the dream interpreted for you?

  156. I mean, that saves us a lot of trouble

  157. and a lot of speculation.

  158. It's especially nice if you're the preacher.

  159. So the dream comes,

  160. and Nebuchadnezzar is told,

  161. You are the head of gold.

  162. The one that's described as great and mighty

  163. and exceedingly bright.

  164. It's sparkling.

  165. It's dazzling, isn't it?

  166. This statue.

  167. And Nebuchadnezzar, you're the head.

  168. Strong and impressive.

  169. The gold on the statue is the strongest material,

  170. the most glorious, dazzling part of the statue.

  171. Nonetheless, despite these wonderful outward appearances,

  172. it will be destroyed, right?

  173. Isn't that what we read?

  174. Not only will there be other kingdoms that take its place,

  175. but do you remember verse 35, what happens to them?

  176. All of those kingdoms,

  177. the wind carries them away

  178. so that not a trace of them could be found.

  179. When the statue is shattered,

  180. it doesn't just break up.

  181. It disappears.

  182. It's blown away.

  183. There's no trace.

  184. It comes to nothing.

  185. Nebuchadnezzar, you and your kingdom are being put on notice

  186. along with all the other man-made kingdoms of the world.

  187. Your strength might look good,

  188. but it won't last.

  189. This story teaches the same reality in another way.

  190. It's not only human kingdoms that are limited in their strength,

  191. but also human strengths.

  192. This chapter is not only about the meaning of the dream itself,

  193. but we also have this life and death situation

  194. before Daniel even gets to the interpretation of the dream, right?

  195. The king wants to know his dream and what it means.

  196. All the wise men in the nation are failing to be wise enough to do it.

  197. Daniel, though, if you recall from last week,

  198. is just finishing up as valedictorian of Babylon Prep.

  199. He's the guy, right?

  200. Dreams are his thing.

  201. Dreams and visions, we've been told,

  202. that's Daniel's strength, his expertise.

  203. He graduated at the top of his class in those fields.

  204. Certainly, he will know what to do

  205. with Nebuchadnezzar's question, right?

  206. Certainly, this impressive guy, valedictorian Daniel,

  207. will craft a way out of this mess.

  208. Listen to how Daniel responds when it comes to him.

  209. Verse 17.

  210. Daniel went to his house

  211. and made the matter known to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,

  212. his companions,

  213. and told them to seek mercy from the God of heaven

  214. concerning this mystery.

  215. And then Daniel comes to Nebuchadnezzar later.

  216. Verse 27.

  217. Daniel answered the king and said,

  218. no wise men, enchanters, magicians, or astrologers

  219. can show to the king the mystery.

  220. The king has asked,

  221. but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries,

  222. and he's made known to King Nebuchadnezzar what will be.

  223. But as for me, the wisest guy you've got,

  224. this mystery's revealed to me,

  225. not because of any wisdom I have

  226. more than anyone else alive,

  227. but in order that the interpretation may be made known

  228. to the king.

  229. Here was one of Daniel's strengths,

  230. but he knew he wasn't strong enough or wise enough

  231. to handle it on his own.

  232. We have such a warped sense of strength, don't we?

  233. We are such capable people here in general at Southwood.

  234. Very strong.

  235. Most of the people in the world would look and say,

  236. y'all are successful, capable, strong,

  237. self-made men and women,

  238. able to handle life and lots of things

  239. that would come at you.

  240. And here's the problem.

  241. Every one of us has the natural tendency

  242. to live in our own strength for our own kingdom.

  243. We do.

  244. Every one of us,

  245. especially those of us who are capable and successful.

  246. You want to tell me my strength is limited?

  247. I'll train longer.

  248. I'll work harder.

  249. I'll plan better.

  250. And I'll jump over the next hurdle.

  251. Just wait and see.

  252. Listen, Babylon is child's play.

  253. Around here,

  254. we're working on ruling solar systems, right?

  255. We can handle it.

  256. And in that strength,

  257. we live for our own kingdoms.

  258. It can be an actual nation focused on man's strength.

  259. Or it can be a self-made family or company

  260. or whatever else you think your strength can control.

  261. The kingdom of will, for example,

  262. to tell you what it looks like in my life,

  263. that I'm often seeking to build in my strength,

  264. consists of an always pleasant wife

  265. with three always obedient kids

  266. in an always moral country,

  267. leading an always growing church

  268. that is always delighted when sermons run over 40 minutes.

  269. It's a fictional kingdom,

  270. but it's nice to dream.

  271. These are things I think I can control, right?

  272. Things that I know I so naturally and consistently live for.

  273. How do I know that?

  274. It's because I see how I respond

  275. when I don't get those things.

  276. When those things don't go the way I desire.

  277. The emotions of anger

  278. or anxiety

  279. or fear.

  280. The responses of ratcheting down,

  281. working harder,

  282. this will happen,

  283. or just yelling louder,

  284. you will be that way.

  285. Maybe that's happened in your kingdom before.

  286. But sometimes we look around

  287. and we think we've done a pretty decent job

  288. building our kingdoms.

  289. I'm just like Nebuchadnezzar

  290. in this passage,

  291. thinking I can build a strong and glorious kingdom

  292. where I'll be safe and secure,

  293. supported by my own remarkable strengths,

  294. gifts, abilities, wisdom.

  295. And God's putting me on notice this morning

  296. as He does Nebuchadnezzar

  297. that all the kingdoms of man

  298. will be wiped away,

  299. will come to nothing.

  300. There may be days that I'm impressive to myself

  301. how well I've built my little kingdom,

  302. how in control of it I am,

  303. how things seem to go my way.

  304. And God says,

  305. it's false.

  306. You've been tricked.

  307. It'll be gone in an instant.

  308. It'll disappear.

  309. You know, there's another tendency I have

  310. besides living in my own strength

  311. for my own kingdom.

  312. And that's a tendency to despair

  313. at the end of my own strength.

  314. When my strength runs out to give up entirely,

  315. it would seem reasonable for God's people

  316. at this point in exile, wouldn't it?

  317. They're far away from the promised land,

  318. looking around,

  319. and from all appearances,

  320. God is absent.

  321. Babylon is strong.

  322. There's really no hope.

  323. Put yourself in Daniel's shoes.

  324. He made it through training, right?

  325. I mean, that was nice.

  326. He might not have been expected

  327. to survive that long,

  328. but now the captain of the king's guard

  329. is at his door with a sword

  330. and orders to execute him and his friends.

  331. Certainly, it would be right to give up at this point.

  332. Hope is lost.

  333. At the very least, Daniel, give up on God.

  334. He's obviously not coming through for you.

  335. Following him is not paying off.

  336. Go to your strengths.

  337. You know this stuff.

  338. Come up with a new plan.

  339. Then, right?

  340. At least try to figure your own way

  341. out of this mess.

  342. Where have you said to yourself

  343. or to a friend,

  344. I just can't do it anymore?

  345. Maybe it's a piece of that kingdom

  346. you've been seeking to build

  347. that seems to have no hope.

  348. I've tried everything I know to do

  349. and this marriage is hopeless.

  350. I'm done with it.

  351. Or perhaps because that marriage

  352. did fall apart,

  353. that this family

  354. or this life I have with God is over.

  355. He's never come through

  356. and I just can't wait for him anymore.

  357. Maybe it's a crisis with a child.

  358. I was such a godly parent

  359. and I did everything I was supposed to do

  360. and God never showed up

  361. and did his part.

  362. I give up.

  363. Perhaps it's a professional crisis.

  364. I tried to live for God

  365. in the workplace

  366. and now I'm fired

  367. and I got a bad review.

  368. There's nowhere for me to go.

  369. If this is how God treats

  370. his children who seek to honor him,

  371. then I'm done.

  372. Get me out.

  373. Have you been in one of those low places

  374. where the strength you've been living on

  375. is just gone?

  376. There's nothing left.

  377. You don't even have the heart

  378. to hope God could come through anymore.

  379. That's how it feels sometimes, isn't it?

  380. There doesn't seem to be any evidence

  381. that he's there

  382. and I'm tired of hoping he'll show up.

  383. Here's where God wants to surprise

  384. our very capable,

  385. self-reliant hearts

  386. with the true source of strength.

  387. And I know that part of your being

  388. very capable people

  389. is that you already know

  390. the true source of strength,

  391. don't you?

  392. You're so well educated.

  393. You've been to church before.

  394. You know the true source of strength.

  395. I'm not confused about that.

  396. I do know that we all like to live

  397. in our own strength,

  398. that I'm not the only one

  399. who struggles in my own strength

  400. to build my own kingdom.

  401. So maybe we're missing something.

  402. Perhaps one reason we're missing it

  403. is that the true source of strength

  404. appears at first unimpressive.

  405. This right here is 91-year-old

  406. Svend Steensgaard.

  407. That's Svend.

  408. Svend, just before this picture was taken,

  409. walked about 10 steps across the room.

  410. Not only does Svend Steensgaard

  411. not sound quite like Magnus Samuelsson,

  412. if you had seen Svend walking across the room

  413. twice in 10 steps,

  414. you would have leaned forward

  415. to catch him from falling down.

  416. It appeared he could hardly keep himself up.

  417. Not particularly impressive at first.

  418. But 91-year-old Svend Steensgaard,

  419. while outwardly unimpressive,

  420. is actually quite strong.

  421. Svend, at 91 years old,

  422. deadlifts about 300 pounds.

  423. That's way beyond my limits.

  424. Okay, just to clarify,

  425. that's a lot.

  426. Svend is a strong guy.

  427. Outwardly unimpressive, perhaps,

  428. but amazing strength

  429. in a place you didn't expect to find it.

  430. God shows us the source of true strength

  431. again in this passage,

  432. both in the events taking place

  433. and in the dream itself.

  434. First, notice the divine strength

  435. that Daniel appeals to in his crisis.

  436. Even the pagan magicians know

  437. this situation is beyond human strength.

  438. And in verse 11, they say,

  439. King, the thing you're asking is difficult.

  440. No one can show it to the king

  441. except the gods whose dwelling is not with flesh.

  442. Daniel's not pretending to be wiser than they are.

  443. He agrees.

  444. Daniel goes, they come to him for an answer,

  445. and he gets his friends and says,

  446. Seek mercy from the God of heaven.

  447. That's the only place that an answer could come from.

  448. Here's what I mean by being unimpressive.

  449. The armies of the nation of Babylon

  450. are coming to kill you.

  451. And Daniel's response is,

  452. Hey, could we hold on a sec?

  453. I need to have a prayer meeting.

  454. There will be four of us in attendance

  455. at the prayer meeting

  456. before you decide to kill us.

  457. That doesn't make a lot of sense, right?

  458. Not real impressive.

  459. Seriously, Daniel,

  460. you're the valedictorian of the wise men.

  461. Come up with a real plan, right?

  462. What?

  463. And Daniel says,

  464. Oh, yes, that's right.

  465. A real plan.

  466. Huddle up.

  467. Here's the plan.

  468. Seek mercy from the God of heaven.

  469. Hmm.

  470. To our warped sense of strength,

  471. this makes no sense.

  472. We chuckle.

  473. And we're people who've sat in church,

  474. and we know that praying

  475. is supposed to be a good thing,

  476. but seriously,

  477. the captain of the king's guard

  478. is at the door with a sword.

  479. Well, after God comes through

  480. and reveals the dream

  481. and its meaning to Daniel,

  482. Daniel prays again,

  483. and here we get in his prayer

  484. the heart of what this passage

  485. teaches us about God.

  486. This is a beautiful prayer.

  487. Daniel says,

  488. Blessed be the name of God

  489. forever and ever,

  490. to whom belong wisdom and might.

  491. He changes times and seasons.

  492. He removes kings and sets up kings.

  493. He gives wisdom to the wise

  494. and knowledge to those

  495. who have understanding.

  496. He reveals deep and hidden things.

  497. He knows what is in the darkness

  498. and the light dwells with him.

  499. To you, O God of my fathers,

  500. I give thanks and praise,

  501. for you have given me wisdom and might

  502. and have now made known to me

  503. what we asked of you,

  504. for you've made known to us

  505. the king's matter.

  506. Be so encouraged by this,

  507. by who God is.

  508. The point of the prayer

  509. is that God has true strength

  510. and wisdom.

  511. Notice all the particular ways

  512. this can comfort us

  513. as Daniel gets specific.

  514. It is God who removes

  515. and sets up kings.

  516. He's in charge of the nations, right?

  517. Including ours.

  518. He makes those who trust him wise.

  519. He will direct you

  520. in difficult situations

  521. when you look to him.

  522. He even knows

  523. what is in the darkness.

  524. The things you can't understand

  525. and don't know

  526. that are going on.

  527. When life makes no sense to you,

  528. he gets that too.

  529. He's in control of it.

  530. But it's not just that God's strength

  531. is the one we should trust

  532. instead of human strengths.

  533. It's also true that only a divine kingdom

  534. will stand forever.

  535. Back to the king's dream.

  536. In the midst of these impressive metals

  537. that are making up this statue,

  538. enter a rock.

  539. A stone cut out by no human hand

  540. that strikes the statue

  541. and breaks the whole thing into pieces.

  542. End of verse 35.

  543. But the stone that struck the image

  544. became a great mountain

  545. and filled the whole earth.

  546. And in the days of those kings,

  547. the ones who've built their human kingdoms,

  548. the God of heaven will set up a kingdom

  549. that shall never be destroyed.

  550. Nor shall the kingdom be left

  551. to another people.

  552. It'll break into pieces

  553. all these kingdoms

  554. and it will stand forever

  555. just like that stone cut

  556. from the mountain

  557. by no human hand

  558. grew and stood forever.

  559. A small piece of rock

  560. whose origin is what really mattered.

  561. That it was not man-made,

  562. but divine.

  563. Not from a human hand.

  564. The kingdom that destroys the others

  565. will not be passed

  566. to another group of people.

  567. It will be divine

  568. and will last.

  569. And the little stone

  570. will become a great mountain

  571. and the mountain will expand

  572. to fill the entire earth.

  573. Of the increase of His government

  574. and of peace,

  575. there will be no end.

  576. Unlimited strength.

  577. Incredible might.

  578. An unending kingdom.

  579. The stone, of course,

  580. is Jesus

  581. who after the Babylonian Empire,

  582. the head of gold,

  583. the Medo-Persian Empire

  584. that comes next,

  585. the Greek Empire

  586. under Alexander the Great,

  587. and then in the midst

  588. of the Roman Empire

  589. where the iron and clay

  590. down at the legs and feet,

  591. in the midst of that Roman Empire,

  592. Jesus shows up

  593. in an unimpressive manner,

  594. doesn't He?

  595. Outwardly,

  596. very unimpressive,

  597. little beauty or majesty

  598. that would attract us to Him,

  599. Isaiah tells us.

  600. With a ragtag group of fishermen

  601. and other Jews

  602. in the midst of the mighty Roman Empire

  603. and in the midst of apparent weakness,

  604. He displays immeasurable strength

  605. that changed the world forever.

  606. In Luke 20,

  607. Jesus refers to Himself

  608. as that stone

  609. that crushes those

  610. on whom it falls.

  611. The unimpressive stone

  612. that hits the clay feet

  613. of the impressive statue

  614. and causes human kingdoms

  615. to crumble.

  616. In a passage discussing

  617. the cross of Jesus,

  618. Paul explains,

  619. 1 Corinthians 1,

  620. the surprising strength

  621. of God.

  622. That Jesus,

  623. the one seemingly weak

  624. and hung on a cross,

  625. is actually the power of God

  626. and the wisdom of God.

  627. 1 Corinthians 1,

  628. 25,

  629. the foolishness of God

  630. is wiser than human wisdom

  631. and the weakness of God

  632. is stronger than human strength.

  633. Jesus,

  634. in many ways,

  635. the weakness of God,

  636. the cross is foolishness.

  637. Jesus,

  638. Jesus first is stronger

  639. than man's strength

  640. in crushing human kingdoms

  641. and then becomes a mountain

  642. that in its magnificence

  643. and might

  644. fills the entire earth

  645. with His kingdom

  646. that never ends.

  647. So what?

  648. So what for us?

  649. Listen,

  650. so we too find

  651. our true strength

  652. in our own weakness.

  653. as Paul says

  654. in 2 Corinthians 12,

  655. admitting our own weakness

  656. turns us to Christ's strength.

  657. The power of God

  658. rests on me

  659. so that when I am weak,

  660. then I am strong.

  661. That's just the way

  662. our Heavenly Father is.

  663. He loves to be strong

  664. for His people.

  665. So not only is He

  666. immeasurably strong,

  667. which is nice to know

  668. theoretically,

  669. but God's unlimited strength

  670. is especially

  671. for weak people like me.

  672. Kids,

  673. you can write that down

  674. in your bulletin.

  675. It's not just kids

  676. that Jesus loves me

  677. is for,

  678. that we are weak

  679. but He is strong.

  680. That's for all of us

  681. who know ourselves

  682. as little,

  683. who are weak

  684. so that He

  685. is strong.

  686. That's the point

  687. of the gospel,

  688. isn't it?

  689. None of us

  690. very capable adults

  691. is any more capable

  692. of working our way

  693. to God,

  694. of standing for God

  695. before pagan rulers,

  696. of having faith

  697. when faced

  698. with persecution.

  699. See,

  700. it's vital

  701. that we admit

  702. our weakness

  703. in the hardest times.

  704. At the times

  705. it seems most dangerous

  706. to acknowledge weakness.

  707. When we're tempted

  708. as Daniel

  709. must have been

  710. to think

  711. the solution here

  712. is to assert

  713. our strength,

  714. then especially

  715. we must cry

  716. to God

  717. for mercy.

  718. When Daniel

  719. opts to admit

  720. his need

  721. and cry for mercy,

  722. God answers

  723. and it gives Daniel

  724. the opportunity

  725. to point others

  726. to God's strength

  727. as he does

  728. in verse 30

  729. with Nebuchadnezzar.

  730. Because he's willing

  731. to admit

  732. that he's not stronger

  733. or wiser

  734. than any other man,

  735. he's able to say

  736. there's a God

  737. in heaven

  738. who is

  739. and he gets

  740. to testify

  741. to the world's

  742. strongest man

  743. that there's

  744. someone stronger

  745. than he is.

  746. Y'all,

  747. when we pretend

  748. that we are

  749. the strong ones,

  750. our friends

  751. and neighbors

  752. are offered

  753. the hope

  754. merely of being

  755. more like us.

  756. When we admit

  757. we are weak,

  758. our friends

  759. and neighbors

  760. are offered

  761. the comfort

  762. of us being

  763. like them

  764. and the hope

  765. of one strong

  766. enough

  767. for all of us.

  768. Isn't that so much better?

  769. Isn't that

  770. what we've been called

  771. to point people

  772. to one strong enough

  773. for all of us

  774. to depend on?

  775. Here's the rub for us.

  776. Do we actually

  777. practically

  778. believe this?

  779. Really,

  780. ask yourself.

  781. I've told you

  782. very little new

  783. this morning

  784. and you may

  785. nod your head

  786. today

  787. but honestly

  788. will you

  789. bow your head

  790. and cry out

  791. to God

  792. tomorrow

  793. the next time

  794. you're in a tight

  795. spot?

  796. We really struggle

  797. here,

  798. don't we?

  799. I know I do.

  800. This week

  801. I really wanted

  802. to preach

  803. a good sermon

  804. and I had a little

  805. bit smaller

  806. window of time

  807. than usual

  808. for a variety

  809. of reasons

  810. so I thought

  811. to myself,

  812. you know,

  813. I kind of

  814. have a general

  815. idea of what

  816. the sermon's about.

  817. It's about our

  818. weakness

  819. and God's

  820. strength

  821. and the value

  822. of prayer

  823. so I know

  824. exactly

  825. how to get

  826. this sermon

  827. ready.

  828. This is one

  829. of the things

  830. I do.

  831. I do sermons.

  832. I did what?

  833. Cracked the study

  834. Bible,

  835. spread out the

  836. commentaries,

  837. dove in,

  838. got to work

  839. fast.

  840. Right there

  841. in the middle

  842. of it I get

  843. to Daniel

  844. turning to God

  845. in prayer

  846. and I think

  847. that's important

  848. I should tell

  849. people to do

  850. that.

  851. I'm going to

  852. prepare skillfully

  853. and efficiently

  854. to tell everyone

  855. to rely on God.

  856. Stop depending

  857. on their own

  858. strength and

  859. trust God.

  860. That's what I'm

  861. going to do.

  862. That happened.

  863. It's not just

  864. a sermon

  865. illustration.

  866. I was reading

  867. about Daniel

  868. turning immediately

  869. to prayer

  870. but I sure

  871. wasn't.

  872. I more naturally

  873. trust my own

  874. human strengths.

  875. I give lip

  876. service to

  877. prayer but

  878. often my lips

  879. don't actually

  880. pray.

  881. I decided

  882. this week

  883. that probably

  884. if a pastor

  885. forgets that

  886. when it's

  887. staring him

  888. in the face

  889. and he's

  890. writing a sermon

  891. about it

  892. I suspect

  893. life gets

  894. going fast

  895. and engineers

  896. forget

  897. when they're

  898. hard pressed

  899. at work.

  900. I suspect

  901. moms forget

  902. when their

  903. family seems

  904. to be

  905. falling apart.

  906. I suspect

  907. Christians forget

  908. when their

  909. friends are

  910. hurting and

  911. they're more

  912. comfortable

  913. offering human

  914. solutions to

  915. them than a

  916. divine savior.

  917. We're quicker

  918. to give advice

  919. than admit we

  920. need to cry

  921. out for help

  922. and we know

  923. the one who's

  924. strong to save.

  925. Haven't you

  926. been there?

  927. Don't you feel

  928. that in your

  929. own heart?

  930. In a pluralistic

  931. culture that

  932. preaches

  933. independence

  934. you could

  935. easily be

  936. like every

  937. other voice

  938. around.

  939. That's the

  940. world we

  941. live in.

  942. You can do

  943. it.

  944. I'm going to

  945. encourage you.

  946. You're strong

  947. enough.

  948. God's people

  949. should be

  950. marked

  951. distinctively

  952. by our

  953. dependence

  954. and prayer.

  955. Here's the

  956. reality we

  957. have to face

  958. today.

  959. We are

  960. God's

  961. children.

  962. We have

  963. a direct

  964. line to

  965. the one

  966. who rules

  967. over the

  968. kingdoms

  969. of the

  970. world,

  971. who removes

  972. and sets

  973. up kings

  974. and we

  975. don't pray.

  976. We fret

  977. and read

  978. political

  979. analysis

  980. instead.

  981. We talk

  982. about

  983. passionately

  984. wanting God's

  985. kingdom to

  986. advance in the

  987. world and

  988. wanting to be a

  989. part of that

  990. ourselves,

  991. but we're so

  992. self-reliant

  993. that we don't

  994. pray.

  995. We don't

  996. pray to the

  997. one who has

  998. promised to

  999. turn a small

  1000. stone into a

  1001. mountain that

  1002. fills the whole

  1003. earth.

  1004. We must

  1005. repent this

  1006. morning of our

  1007. warped sense

  1008. of strength,

  1009. that we would

  1010. turn to

  1011. ourselves before

  1012. turning to

  1013. God.

  1014. Where are you

  1015. longing this

  1016. morning to

  1017. see God's

  1018. kingdom come,

  1019. but it feels

  1020. hopeless or

  1021. unreasonable?

  1022. Get four

  1023. weak,

  1024. desperate people

  1025. pleading to a

  1026. strong God.

  1027. Cry out to

  1028. Him and watch

  1029. what He does.

  1030. Do you believe

  1031. that's who He is

  1032. or does that

  1033. still sound

  1034. silly?

  1035. Are you

  1036. willing this

  1037. morning to

  1038. lay hold of

  1039. Him and say,

  1040. I believe He's

  1041. like that,

  1042. that He delights

  1043. to show Himself

  1044. to be strong

  1045. for you

  1046. and to make

  1047. His kingdom

  1048. into that

  1049. massive mountain

  1050. that you can

  1051. stand firm

  1052. on.

  1053. May we hope

  1054. in no other

  1055. kingdom and no

  1056. other strength

  1057. than the one

  1058. that will fill

  1059. the earth

  1060. forever.

  1061. Let's pray.

  1062. Father, we

  1063. confess that

  1064. we like the

  1065. feeling a lot

  1066. more of

  1067. thinking we

  1068. can handle

  1069. it.

  1070. For a while

  1071. at least it

  1072. makes us feel

  1073. better.

  1074. We confess

  1075. we're quick to

  1076. give up on

  1077. You and to

  1078. think there's a

  1079. better shot

  1080. with our own

  1081. methods than

  1082. with crying

  1083. out to You.

  1084. We think we

  1085. could fix

  1086. something and

  1087. You probably

  1088. wouldn't care

  1089. to.

  1090. Father, give us

  1091. eyes to see

  1092. how strong

  1093. You are,

  1094. how magnificent

  1095. Your kingdom

  1096. is,

  1097. to know

  1098. the love

  1099. of a Father

  1100. that is strong

  1101. for us,

  1102. who delights

  1103. to care for

  1104. His children.

  1105. children,

  1106. and as we

  1107. see You

  1108. like that,

  1109. might we

  1110. indeed cry

  1111. out to You

  1112. more often.

  1113. Might our

  1114. hearts become

  1115. increasingly

  1116. dependent on

  1117. You.

  1118. Do that work

  1119. in our hearts,

  1120. not just for

  1121. our sakes,

  1122. not just so

  1123. we'll be better

  1124. people,

  1125. but so that

  1126. Your kingdom

  1127. will be made

  1128. great,

  1129. and many will

  1130. know of the

  1131. greatness of

  1132. Your name.

  1133. We ask it in

  1134. Jesus' name.

  1135. Amen.

  1136. Amen.
