  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. We're going to be in Daniel chapter 5 this morning, Daniel 5.

    Daniel 5 chapter mention

  5. Before we go there, though, I want to talk for just a minute, share one kind of side

  6. note with you from my study this week, a little tidbit that I took away before we dive into

  7. the story itself.

  8. I share this with you because of our commitment to God's Word and its reliability as one of

  9. the most fundamental aspects of our faith.

  10. This is just one of those small instances this week where our faith can be strengthened

  11. in the trustworthiness of the Bible.

  12. A couple centuries ago, critical scholars began to attack the historical veracity of the Bible,

  13. particularly areas of the Bible that require supernatural involvement, right?

  14. You're aware of that.

  15. In an effort to support a naturalistic worldview where we can explain everything by what we

  16. see and experience, miracles were out, right?

  17. Prophecies were out.

  18. And so Daniel, which purports to be written in the 6th century B.C.

  19. He undeniably depicts accurately, everybody agrees, some of the events that happen in the next

  20. couple hundred years after the 6th century B.C.

  21. So how would the critical scholars explain that?

  22. How could the book of Daniel actually do that?

  23. Well, the agreed upon opinion was that Daniel was actually written after those events that

  24. it writes about.

  25. Probably somewhere in about the 2nd century B.C. is what popular opinion came to be among

  26. those scholars.

  27. And that explained it, right?

  28. No wonder he can write such a good account.

  29. The events already happened, they said.

  30. One of the key planks in their argument is the king in our story this morning, a guy named

  31. Belshazzar.

  32. In all the historical records there about Babylon from the 5th century and the 4th century B.C.,

  33. historians like Herodotus and others, there was no Belshazzar.

  34. None at all.

  35. Lists of all the kings of Babylon, he's not even there.

  36. So the biblical author appeared to have made this guy up.

  37. You know, 400 years later they said, of course.

  38. He didn't know any better.

  39. And he just made up another king of Babylon.

  40. Beginning in about 1860, archaeologists began to find more old records.

  41. They started digging other things up in southern Iraq, actually found several things that had

  42. histories of Babylon recorded and lists of kings.

  43. And lo and behold, there's this guy, Belshazzar.

  44. He is the oldest son of the last formal king of Babylon, Nabonidus.

  45. And these historical records detail how Belshazzar actually ruled in Babylon for several years

  46. during his father's reign, that he was the one actively ruling in Babylon when it fell.

  47. So not only, according to these newly discovered records, was Belshazzar there, not only was the

  48. biblical author correct in having him as the last king in the city of Babylon, but also

  49. in the second century when these scholars were arguing the Bible would have been written,

  50. there was no record of Belshazzar.

  51. Anybody in the second century trying to write about the fall of Babylon had no record of the

  52. guy, never would have made him up.

  53. So there's no way a second century author would have written Daniel chapter 5 with a guy named

    Daniel 5 chapter mention

  54. Belshazzar.

  55. To know about Belshazzar, you actually had to be there in the sixth century yourself.

  56. So Belshazzar argues against the possibility of Daniel being written after the events that

  57. it talks about and gives extra support to the reliability of the biblical account and the

  58. prophetic activity.

  59. Yes, wonderful.

  60. We love it when that happens, right?

  61. That's so encouraging.

  62. I don't usually share little tidbits like that, but I thought that one might really encourage

  63. your faith and it's part of what we're talking about this morning.

  64. If I lost you in that explanation, we don't usually spend a lot of hours here at Southwood

  65. talking through the archaeological evidence for critical scholarship and I don't do it

  66. real well.

  67. So if you didn't understand any of that, here's what you need to know.

  68. What you're about to hear is a trustworthy account of what actually took place at the end of

  69. a great kingdom the night Babylon fell in 539 B.C.

  70. Listen as I read God's holy, inerrant, infallible word, Daniel chapter 5 at verse 1.

    Daniel 5 chapter mention

  71. King Belshazzar made a great feast for a thousand of his lords and drank wine in front of the thousand.

  72. Belshazzar, when he tasted the wine, commanded that the vessels of gold and of silver that

  73. Nebuchadnezzar his father had taken out of the temple in Jerusalem be brought, that the

  74. king and his lords, his wives, and his concubines might drink from them.

  75. Then they brought in the golden vessels that had been taken out of the temple, the house

  76. of God in Jerusalem, and the king and his lords, his wives, and his concubines drank from

  77. them.

  78. They drank wine and praised the gods of gold and silver, bronze, iron, wood, and stone.

  79. Immediately, the fingers of a human hand appeared and wrote on the plaster of the wall of the

  80. king's palace opposite the lampstand.

  81. And the king saw the hand as it wrote.

  82. Then the king's color changed.

  83. And his thoughts alarmed him.

  84. His limbs gave way and his knees knocked together.

  85. And Belshazzar calls together all of his wise men and asks them to interpret what is going

  86. on.

  87. Finally, the queen remembers this guy named Daniel who's good at this stuff.

  88. Bring him in.

  89. And Daniel comes before the king.

  90. We'll skip ahead to verse 18.

  91. Daniel says to Belshazzar,

  92. O king, the most high God gave Nebuchadnezzar your father kingship and greatness and glory

  93. and majesty.

  94. And because of the greatness that he gave him, all peoples, nations, and languages trembled

  95. and feared before him.

  96. Whom he would, he killed, and whom he would, he kept alive.

  97. Whom he would, he raised up, and whom he would, he humbled.

  98. But when his heart was lifted up and his spirit was hardened so that he dealt proudly,

  99. he was brought down from his kingly throne, and his glory was taken from him.

  100. He was driven from among the children of mankind, and his mind was made like that of a beast,

  101. and his dwelling was with the wild donkeys.

  102. He was fed grass like an ox, and his body was wet with the dew of heaven, until he knew

  103. that the most high God rules the kingdom of mankind and sets it over whom he will.

  104. That was our story last week.

  105. Daniel 4, Nebuchadnezzar becoming a beast.

  106. And you, his son, Belshazzar, have not humbled your heart, though you knew all this.

  107. But you have lifted up yourself against the Lord of heaven, and the vessels of his house

  108. have been brought in before you.

  109. And you and your lords, your wives, and your concubines have drunk wine from them, and you

  110. have praised the gods of silver and gold, of bronze, iron, wood, and stone, which do not

  111. see or hear or know, but the God in whose hand is your breath, and whose are all your

  112. ways you have not honored.

  113. Then, from his presence, the hand was sent, and this writing was inscribed.

  114. And this is the writing that was inscribed, Mene, Mene, Tekel, and Parson.

  115. This is the interpretation of the matter.

  116. Mene, which means numbered.

  117. God has numbered the days of your kingdom and brought it to an end.

  118. Tekel, which means weighed.

  119. You have been weighed in the balances and found wanting.

  120. Perez, which sounds both like the word for divided and an awful lot like the Persians.

  121. Your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians.

  122. Then Belshazzar gave the command, and Daniel was clothed with purple.

  123. A chain of gold was put around his neck, and a proclamation was made about him that he should

  124. be the third ruler in the kingdom.

  125. That very night, Belshazzar the Chaldean king was killed, and Darius the Mede received the

  126. kingdom, being about 62 years old.

  127. Pray with me.

  128. Father, this is a sobering passage of your word.

  129. Holy Spirit, we ask that you would tenderly, but firmly, apply it to each of our hearts.

  130. Would you do that work with the word?

  131. We ask it in Jesus' name.

  132. Amen.

  133. Last week, we did see the glories of God's grace on great display as we see God pursuing

  134. the proud pagan king, Nebuchadnezzar, all the way to making him a beast in order to humble

  135. him, to help him see God's greatness and then restore him.

  136. And we said as we looked at that, God's grace knows no bounds, right?

  137. God's grace reaches even to the beast.

  138. It extends to the proudest, most hardened enemies of God.

  139. He forgives.

  140. He loves.

  141. He restores those who've fallen.

  142. That's what our God is like.

  143. In this next story, it doesn't feel quite as good.

  144. There's no fairy tale ending for this idolatrous king.

  145. But the gospel is still here as well.

  146. As God's justice is demonstrated, it's still full of grace for us.

  147. And the reason I say that is that what we learn about God here in this whole handwriting

  148. on the wall story is that he hates sin enough to judge evil and loves us enough to assure

  149. us that he will.

  150. It's both a word of warning and a word of comfort to us about the seriousness of sin and God's

  151. commitment to justice.

  152. And both the warning and the comfort come from the gracious heart of God.

  153. It's his grace that motivates him to give the firm warning and the tender comfort.

  154. I want us to see that this morning.

  155. To see this, we must remember for whom the book of Daniel was written.

  156. Who's the audience of Daniel chapter 5?

    Daniel 5 chapter mention

  157. It's not King Belshazzar, is it?

  158. He's not the one being warned here.

  159. He's dead before the book is written.

  160. The kingdom of Babylon is gone.

  161. The audience of the book of Daniel is God's people, right?

  162. This is not a warning for the nations necessarily.

  163. It's particularly a warning for God's exiled people coming straight from their prophet Daniel.

  164. They should be both warned and comforted by this account that they're given.

  165. We receive it as they would have.

  166. So first, the gracious warning.

  167. God's people are reminded that sin and its consequences are serious.

  168. Deadly serious.

  169. You hear the warning part, but you don't hear the gracious part yet, do you?

  170. Doesn't sound real gracious at first glance, does it?

  171. I still remember my driver's ed class back when I was 15 years old, headed into high school,

  172. so excited to get ready to drive.

  173. I remember that Shannon Pitner was the instructor.

  174. I don't remember a lot of particulars that Mr. Pitner taught us in that driver's ed class.

  175. But I do remember the video that he showed us on the first day of class before he even introduced himself.

  176. On the video, as sirens blared and lights flashed on the way to the scene of a traffic accident,

  177. the words scrolled across the screen.

  178. .01 seconds after impact, the steering column slams your chest.

  179. .05 seconds after impact, your head crashes through the windshield.

  180. .1 seconds after impact, and so on and so on for every fraction of a second.

  181. I don't remember all of the things, but within a matter of a few fractions of a second, you're pronounced dead.

  182. A morbid video, you might say.

  183. .10 seconds after impact, and so on and so on, you're going to be able to do that.

  184. But it grabbed the attention of some 15-year-old future drivers in a really stark way.

  185. Why did Mr. Pitner show a video like that at the very beginning of driver's ed?

  186. Why did he start the class that way?

  187. You know, right?

  188. Because Mr. Pitner wanted us to know in no uncertain terms the deadly seriousness of reckless driving.

  189. He wanted us to know the severe consequences of not paying attention and learning how to drive properly.

  190. He wanted to give us a gracious warning to caution us away from death and toward life.

  191. That's what God is doing in this equally morbid account here in Daniel 5.

  192. Look at verse 30 again towards the end of it.

  193. That very night, the very night all these things happened, Belshazzar, the Chaldean king, was killed.

  194. That very night, his life will be demanded of him.

  195. And how will his idols help him then?

  196. And he's throwing a party, right?

  197. This is supposed to be a fun night for him.

  198. He's going to worship the idols of gold and silver, bronze, iron, wood, and stone, verse 4 tells us.

  199. And immediately, verse 5 says, right in the middle of the party, the hand of the true God appears writing on the wall.

  200. And the message is this, you will not find safety in being idolatrous.

  201. Be warned, those other gods you're seeking pleasure in will not save you.

  202. Think of the warning, not just to Belshazzar, but to God's people here.

  203. God's people in exile in a foreign land.

  204. Why is it, after all, that they find themselves in exile in Babylon?

  205. Of all of the sins the Bible mentions that they've committed, what's the one that it most often comes back to?

  206. Wandering after other gods.

  207. Bowing down to their idols and serving them instead of the true God.

  208. A warning to God's people who found themselves wandering after other gods.

  209. Where are you bowing down to a God of your own design?

  210. An idol of your own pleasure?

  211. You've shirked the call of the one true God to faithful obedience and told yourself you're safe following the ways of your own desires and direction.

  212. You've told yourself you're safe to indulge in the sins of the day like everyone else.

  213. Hey, come on, everybody's struggling with these things.

  214. It's okay.

  215. Materialism.

  216. Self-defined sexual morality.

  217. Greed.

  218. Lying to get ahead.

  219. And God loves you enough to warn you, sin is deadly serious.

  220. Stop.

  221. Turn back.

  222. You're not safe there chasing those idols.

  223. We see not only a warning against the idolatry of other gods, but also a warning against the idolatry of human strength.

  224. What does Daniel say to Belshazzar?

  225. It's a very pointed conversation he has with him.

  226. You haven't learned anything.

  227. Did you not see Nebuchadnezzar, your father, meaning your predecessor as king, a couple kings before you?

  228. Nebuchadnezzar was taught this lesson in a painful way about his pride.

  229. God turned him into a beast to humble him until he understood and acknowledged who was truly great and in charge.

  230. And Belshazzar, you know this.

  231. And you, his son, Belshazzar, have not humbled your heart, though you knew all this.

  232. But you've lifted yourself up against the Lord of heaven, just like he did, and you saw what happened to him.

  233. How many times have we as parents thought, I wish you could learn from my mistakes.

  234. And you know what?

  235. It looks like you're going to have to make them again yourself.

  236. We think we're stronger.

  237. We'll be safe where others fell.

  238. Listen, what's happening in this picture, while he's at the party that night, Belshazzar is surrounded by the armies of Persia.

  239. They're laying siege to Babylon.

  240. But instead of being worried about that, he throws a huge party for a thousand people.

  241. After all, I'm safe behind these great walls at points 87 feet thick, the walls of Babylon.

  242. 350 feet tall.

  243. Ain't nobody coming in here.

  244. We can have a party.

  245. They can stand out there and hold us siege as long as they want.

  246. We're safe.

  247. No one's coming through.

  248. And we've got the Euphrates River flowing right through the city.

  249. We can eat and drink as long as we want while they sit out there and get tired.

  250. It reminds you of Nebuchadnezzar from last week on the roof of the palace.

  251. Sitting out there and thinking, wow, this is pretty amazing.

  252. I'm something.

  253. Marveling in his arrogance at his own human might.

  254. Thinking he finds safety there.

  255. And here it rears its ugly head again.

  256. That very night, the Persians will kill Belshazzar in his palace and take his city.

  257. I think of God's people.

  258. Prophet after prophet.

  259. Warning after warning.

  260. And yet, failure to trust God after failure to trust God.

  261. Wandering again and again.

  262. And you must see your own frailty, Daniel would be saying to these people in exile.

  263. You must see the devastation sin has brought upon you and your fathers.

  264. If you don't see it, if you don't turn from it, you too will perish in exile.

  265. But return to God and you can be restored.

  266. That's a clear warning to us as well, isn't it?

  267. Don't think you're safe hiding behind the thick walls of outward strength or success.

  268. That you won't be found out or that your sin won't receive dire consequences.

  269. Don't pull into your garage and close the door.

  270. Walk into your office and close the door.

  271. And in the privacy of your own heart and life.

  272. Think that you're safe and that your sin won't bear painful fruit.

  273. Be warned.

  274. Sin is deadly serious.

  275. So we won't find safety in being idolatrous.

  276. In serving other gods of sin and self.

  277. But perhaps even closer to home.

  278. Even more under the radar in the church this morning.

  279. We will not find safety in being religious.

  280. And you may have thought that's the answer.

  281. If I need to stop running after all these other gods.

  282. I better run into church this morning and do some religious.

  283. I better start being more religious.

  284. And Daniel gives a very clear warning.

  285. And we can tend to deflect this warning.

  286. And say, oh, it's for somebody else.

  287. But it's so clear in this passage.

  288. Look at verse 3.

  289. Look what's happening before the hand shows up.

  290. They brought in what?

  291. The golden vessels that had been taken out of the temple.

  292. The house of God in Jerusalem.

  293. These were the vessels back from the first verse of this book.

  294. That Nebuchadnezzar had taken out of the temple in Jerusalem.

  295. They were there for the worship of God.

  296. And he'd taken them into Babylon.

  297. And Belshazzar calls for them and has them brought.

  298. So they can drink from them.

  299. Immediately when that happens.

  300. The fingers of a human hand appeared and wrote on the wall.

  301. Immediately God shows up with a message.

  302. Daniel connects these same dots.

  303. We're not just reading into it when he's talking to him.

  304. Here's what it's looked like to lift yourself up against the Lord of heaven.

  305. The vessels of his house have been brought in before you.

  306. And you've all drunk wine from them and praised other gods with the vessels used to worship Yahweh.

  307. You've worshipped gods who don't see or hear or know.

  308. But the God in whose hand is your breath and whose are all your ways you have not honored.

  309. You've held his cup but you haven't honored him.

  310. You have held in your hand the things of God.

  311. But the God who holds you in his hand you have not honored.

  312. God will not be mocked will he?

  313. There's not safety in the outward forms of religion.

  314. In external religiosity.

  315. And God's people need to heed that warning.

  316. Lest they think they're safe because they've worshipped in the temple.

  317. Or because they've been circumcised.

  318. God takes your sins seriously.

  319. And he's calling you to return not merely to the outward forms of religion.

  320. Not merely to find a holy cup to hold on to.

  321. But to a heart that embraces him.

  322. And his ways.

  323. You will not find safety in merely being religious.

  324. In holding in your hands the things of God.

  325. While not truly honoring the God who holds your breath in his hand.

  326. Are you rationalizing sin?

  327. Telling yourself the sin you're consistently indulging in is okay.

  328. Because you're consistently showing up at church too.

  329. Do you think you're keeping God placated?

  330. By showing up regularly.

  331. Giving occasionally.

  332. Not even serving when asked.

  333. Is your religiosity merely a charade?

  334. Like Belshazzar's.

  335. Holding the cups from Yahweh's temple.

  336. Bringing them to his party as though he cared about Yahweh.

  337. But using them to serve his own pleasure and worship his own gods.

  338. God says be warned.

  339. You will not find safety in being religious.

  340. And we're the ones who have to hear that warning.

  341. We're the ones sitting in the pews at church.

  342. The ones who have easy access to the things of God.

  343. Who so easily grab on to them and hold them in our hands.

  344. And God says that's not what it's about.

  345. It's not merely outward forms of religion.

  346. While living a life completely differently.

  347. Indulging your sin every other day.

  348. The sin in your heart playing out in your life is deadly serious.

  349. The solution is not to hide it.

  350. Not to cover it with outward religious activity so that everybody thinks I'm a good guy.

  351. Because I wear a suit and go to church and show up so often.

  352. The solution is not to medicate it with human success.

  353. That it appears like I've got my life together.

  354. You must confess it.

  355. You must turn from it.

  356. Receive God's forgiveness.

  357. And seek to be guided by His Spirit.

  358. Spirit, I'd ask you this morning.

  359. What is the sin that you're thinking?

  360. You're crazy.

  361. I could never let anyone know about this struggle.

  362. Or that failing.

  363. Don't you understand, Pastor?

  364. Have you not lived in Huntsville, Alabama?

  365. The consequences would be terrible if people knew about this.

  366. Can you imagine if people found out?

  367. What would happen to me?

  368. What people would say?

  369. What about my family?

  370. Hear the gracious warning of God's Word to you this morning.

  371. The consequences may indeed be terrible.

  372. But if you do not turn from your sin,

  373. the consequences of that,

  374. of not turning from sin and seeking Jesus,

  375. will most certainly be worse.

  376. will most certainly be even more terrible

  377. than the ones you anticipate right now.

  378. God is deadly serious about sin.

  379. First and foremost,

  380. repent and turn to God.

  381. Plead for His mercy.

  382. He delights to forgive.

  383. We have celebrated that this morning.

  384. Don't forget who He is in the midst of your sin.

  385. Alongside that,

  386. I'd urge you to find someone else that you can share with.

  387. Someone you can tell about your sin.

  388. Someone you can ask to pray with you about your struggle.

  389. Someone who can walk with you through the painful,

  390. but fruitful process of repentance.

  391. You'll need help.

  392. You may think,

  393. no one will understand.

  394. These church people,

  395. they've got it figured out.

  396. They won't understand.

  397. I can't tell them.

  398. Y'all,

  399. that's the beauty of a community like this.

  400. That's the way we're supposed to be,

  401. that it is a safe place

  402. for you to share your struggle with someone.

  403. Because our hearts are all wracked by sin.

  404. I won't be looking down on you

  405. when you share something with me.

  406. I'll be looking in the mirror.

  407. I'll be right there beside you.

  408. We're all in it together.

  409. Father, you can uncover your sin.

  410. You can share and find safety.

  411. You see, those of us who have declared

  412. that our hope is in Jesus

  413. as we have this morning,

  414. we have to admit the seriousness of our sin

  415. in order to do that.

  416. The hymn writer reminds us

  417. it took the death of the Son of God

  418. to pay for our sin.

  419. That's how serious it was.

  420. The hymn,

  421. Stricken, Smitten, and Afflicted

  422. is one we often sing around

  423. Easter.

  424. Ye who think of sin

  425. but lightly,

  426. nor suppose the evil great,

  427. here, here at the cross,

  428. may view its nature rightly,

  429. here its guilt may estimate.

  430. Because we look,

  431. mark the sacrifice appointed.

  432. What had to happen

  433. to pay for the sin?

  434. How serious was it?

  435. See the one who bears the awful load.

  436. Tis the Word,

  437. the Lord's anointed,

  438. Son of Man and Son of God.

  439. It's the perfect one

  440. who had to die

  441. because of our sin.

  442. Those of us who hope in Christ

  443. know and admit

  444. the seriousness of our sin.

  445. Nowhere better than at the cross

  446. do we see

  447. how seriously God takes sin.

  448. His grace does not mean

  449. that sin gets ignored

  450. and the bar lowered.

  451. Quite the opposite.

  452. It means sin gets punished

  453. and we sinners

  454. are warned and urged

  455. to throw ourselves

  456. upon the only one

  457. who reached the bar.

  458. Jesus.

  459. That's grace

  460. according to God's Word.

  461. So the gracious warning

  462. is that God takes sin seriously.

  463. And that same truth

  464. is for God's people

  465. a gracious comfort.

  466. Try to put yourselves

  467. in the shoes

  468. of God's exiled people

  469. for a minute.

  470. You're in Babylon

  471. away from the promised land.

  472. You've been dragged there

  473. by mighty but pagan Babylon.

  474. who's come into your land.

  475. Who's tortured your families.

  476. Taunted your God.

  477. Dragged you away

  478. into servitude.

  479. What are you thinking?

  480. What's going through your mind?

  481. Where is God?

  482. Will the Babylonians

  483. ever get what's coming to them?

  484. Why do the wicked prosper

  485. while the righteous suffer?

  486. Why do those who trust in God

  487. seem to have it hardest?

  488. Have you ever felt

  489. something was so unfair

  490. but you couldn't do anything

  491. about it?

  492. Perhaps at work

  493. with a promotion.

  494. Perhaps with your kids

  495. at school.

  496. Perhaps with someone you know

  497. suffering unjustly

  498. and you just can't help them.

  499. There's nothing you can do.

  500. Doesn't that burn you up?

  501. Don't you hate that feeling?

  502. You're longing to see

  503. justice prevail

  504. and things be made right

  505. and it's not in your power

  506. to do it.

  507. So often we're not

  508. powerful enough

  509. or connected enough

  510. or knowledgeable enough

  511. to bring the justice

  512. we long for.

  513. But God is.

  514. both of His hands

  515. we said

  516. equally skilled

  517. at ruining evil.

  518. At administering justice.

  519. That's the grace

  520. of God's justice again.

  521. This time from a little bit

  522. of a different angle.

  523. God loves us enough

  524. to assure us

  525. that He will judge sin.

  526. The judge of all the earth

  527. will do right.

  528. The bully will be called

  529. to account by someone

  530. bigger and stronger

  531. than He is.

  532. The mighty Babylonian kingdom

  533. comes to an end

  534. in an instant.

  535. Even in a moment

  536. where it still looks

  537. splendid and powerful.

  538. The Persian army

  539. has taken their strength

  540. and used it against them.

  541. They've dammed up

  542. that Euphrates river

  543. so that the water level

  544. begins to get lower.

  545. And what happened

  546. the night of the handwriting

  547. on the wall

  548. is the Persian army

  549. rode right in

  550. on that river

  551. underneath the passageways

  552. that ran right through

  553. those thick walls.

  554. Right into the middle

  555. of Babylon

  556. and the city fell.

  557. That's what happened

  558. the night Belshazzar

  559. saw God's hand

  560. writing on the wall

  561. Mene.

  562. Mene.

  563. Tekel.

  564. Parson.

  565. He was weighed

  566. in the scales

  567. of God's justice

  568. and found wanting.

  569. His days were numbered

  570. by the God of heaven.

  571. His kingdom was given

  572. to another

  573. and his life

  574. taken.

  575. That very night

  576. Belshazzar

  577. the Chaldean king

  578. was killed

  579. and Darius the Mede

  580. walks in

  581. and receives

  582. the kingdom.

  583. Why?

  584. Because God

  585. will judge

  586. sin

  587. and will bring

  588. justice

  589. to his people.

  590. Listen to the comfort

  591. of this y'all.

  592. If you haven't been

  593. in their shoes

  594. it may be hard

  595. to feel the comfort

  596. of Babylon

  597. falling.

  598. But this is not

  599. a parable

  600. that teaches us

  601. a theoretical

  602. principle

  603. about God

  604. and justice.

  605. This is an actual

  606. historical account

  607. of a story

  608. you are a part of

  609. as God's people.

  610. These are

  611. your ancestors.

  612. This is

  613. your God

  614. at work.

  615. God created

  616. the world good

  617. and he is committed

  618. not only to

  619. defeating evil

  620. but to ridding

  621. the world

  622. of evil

  623. forever

  624. so that we enjoy

  625. his perfect world

  626. with him

  627. as he always

  628. intended.

  629. He will do that.

  630. That's your story

  631. that you're

  632. living in

  633. and this is a glimpse

  634. of what's

  635. coming.

  636. Isn't that our hope

  637. that God's going

  638. to do that?

  639. That we would

  640. then live

  641. forever

  642. with him

  643. and his world

  644. made perfect

  645. with evil

  646. being eliminated?

  647. That's our hope.

  648. That is so

  649. comforting.

  650. For you

  651. it may be

  652. a particular

  653. individual

  654. who has

  655. mistreated you.

  656. A particular

  657. injustice

  658. you've

  659. suffered in the

  660. past

  661. that continues

  662. to haunt you.

  663. or it may

  664. indeed feel

  665. like an

  666. entire

  667. kingdom

  668. opposed to

  669. you

  670. and your

  671. God

  672. and you face

  673. the weight

  674. of that

  675. today.

  676. I'll admit

  677. that Babylon

  678. looked mighty

  679. for a long

  680. time before

  681. its fall

  682. in this story.

  683. God's justice

  684. sometimes lingers

  685. even into

  686. eternity.

  687. eternity.

  688. But God

  689. says I've

  690. got eternal

  691. scales that

  692. on many

  693. days you

  694. can't

  695. understand or

  696. appreciate.

  697. Trust me.

  698. That's his

  699. call this

  700. morning.

  701. Trust me.

  702. I'm committed

  703. to justice.

  704. I will punish

  705. evil.

  706. I will vindicate

  707. my people

  708. against those

  709. who mistreat

  710. them.

  711. And you

  712. can find

  713. great comfort

  714. in that

  715. promise.

  716. The cross

  717. of Jesus

  718. is once again

  719. our great

  720. assurance of

  721. that isn't

  722. it?

  723. The cross

  724. of Jesus

  725. there where

  726. God defeats

  727. the greatest

  728. of our

  729. enemies.

  730. Death.

  731. Satan.

  732. Sin.

  733. There where

  734. God shows

  735. his hatred

  736. for sin by

  737. pouring out

  738. his wrath

  739. on the

  740. sin bearer.

  741. There where

  742. the justice

  743. and grace

  744. of God

  745. kiss.

  746. There at

  747. the cross

  748. we know

  749. that as

  750. serious as

  751. sin is

  752. it will

  753. not haunt

  754. us forever.

  755. While God

  756. has promised

  757. to punish

  758. sin he

  759. has also

  760. promised not

  761. to punish

  762. you again

  763. for the

  764. sin Jesus

  765. has already

  766. died for.

  767. Hallelujah.

  768. You won't

  769. be punished

  770. for it

  771. because Jesus

  772. was.

  773. And while

  774. other lesser

  775. enemies still

  776. haunt you

  777. today and

  778. life is

  779. painful and

  780. justice seems

  781. far off

  782. because of

  783. it you

  784. can be

  785. confident

  786. your Savior

  787. will deliver

  788. you from

  789. them as

  790. well because

  791. he's delivered

  792. you on the

  793. cross from

  794. your greatest

  795. enemies.

  796. So it's

  797. safe.

  798. The first

  799. safety we've

  800. been able to

  801. find it's

  802. safe to

  803. entrust

  804. yourself even

  805. as a great

  806. sinner.

  807. even as

  808. one greatly

  809. sinned

  810. against

  811. to Jesus.

  812. It's safe

  813. to entrust

  814. yourself to

  815. him.

  816. The warning

  817. of this

  818. chapter is

  819. clear.

  820. God takes

  821. sin

  822. seriously.

  823. You will

  824. not find

  825. safety in

  826. being idolatrous.

  827. You will

  828. not find

  829. safety in

  830. being religious.

  831. you will

  832. find safety

  833. only in

  834. your

  835. perfectly

  836. just and

  837. gracious

  838. God.

  839. Let's pray

  840. to him

  841. now.

  842. Father, we

  843. don't look

  844. forward to

  845. sermons like

  846. these.

  847. We like

  848. the other

  849. stories better.

  850. sin.

  851. But we

  852. believe we

  853. need to

  854. know the

  855. truth about

  856. sin because

  857. sin is

  858. something we

  859. know all

  860. too well.

  861. And we

  862. need when we

  863. face the

  864. reality of

  865. our sins

  866. something to

  867. give us

  868. hope.

  869. And it is

  870. only you

  871. that gives

  872. us hope.

  873. Don't let us

  874. look anywhere

  875. else but to

  876. Jesus.

  877. Might we

  878. find hope

  879. in him for

  880. today and

  881. enough hope

  882. in him to

  883. make us

  884. confident for

  885. eternity.

  886. Do that

  887. work in our

  888. hearts.

  889. We ask it in

  890. his name.

  891. Amen.
