  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. Amen.

  5. It's a great, great day to look forward to, to be thrilled about and have our lives today

  6. shaped by what's going to happen eternally.

  7. That's a big theme in the book of Daniel.

  8. We've made it this morning to Daniel 6 in the lion's den, as I mentioned to the kids earlier.

  9. This is the final and climactic scene in the first half of the book of Daniel that recounts

  10. the stories of Daniel and his friends living in Babylon and learning how to follow the true

  11. king while living in another's kingdom.

  12. You've heard this story before, I suspect.

  13. Perhaps sung about it.

  14. Perhaps told your kids about it.

  15. But what is Daniel and the lion's den all about?

  16. Let's pray and ask for God's help.

  17. We'll read parts of the familiar story as we go.

  18. Pray with me.

  19. Father, we will recognize many of these words.

  20. Our kids have told us what happens here.

  21. But we need your spirit to speak to us through your word this morning.

  22. We need not to hear things that are assumptions of our own hearts, that feed our own idols and our own desires.

  23. We need to hear from you.

  24. Would you speak clearly and powerfully?

  25. And would you give us hearts to hear?

  26. Hearts to be sensitive to what you would teach us.

  27. Hearts to change and to become different people because we have encountered you in your word.

  28. Do that work this morning, we ask in Jesus' name.

  29. Amen.

  30. Imagine for me this morning as we get started that you're a journalist back in the 6th century BC.

  31. It's a very popular profession back then.

  32. There were a lot of them.

  33. Imagine that you are a reporter in Babylon for the Hebrew Herald.

  34. You know, the Hebrew Herald, the one that prints all the news for all the exiles in Babylon.

  35. That's their motto.

  36. And you've been on staff for a while.

  37. You've been stuck covering typical, unimpressive stuff.

  38. You never make it past the bottom of page 8.

  39. And then one day, you get your big break.

  40. You hear that there's this story about a Hebrew prophet who has survived the king's lion's den.

  41. And you've been told that you get the big interview.

  42. You've got an exclusive sit-down with Daniel.

  43. This is your big moment.

  44. This is going to be the career-making interview and story.

  45. Front page headlines for sure for the first time.

  46. And so you get in your chariot and you drive across town to meet with Daniel for the interview.

  47. And in your mind are all of these wonderful headlines and what it's going to look like splashed across the front page.

  48. You know, you start thinking things like, ageless wonder, 90-year-old escapes again.

  49. Yeah, that's what it's going to say.

  50. And then you think, no, no, no, miraculous.

  51. Hebrew shows overgrown cats what nine lives is all about.

  52. That's what it's going to say.

  53. Then you think, no, maybe what it should be is lion lunch turns lion whisperer.

  54. That's what it is.

  55. Daniel, he's going to be the cover boy for my new series of articles that's really going to show this.

  56. And then you think to yourself, no, none of those.

  57. The one that's really going to make it big is this one.

  58. And you settle on this.

  59. Cat food?

  60. Not our profit.

  61. And you've got it.

  62. So there you go to your interview with Daniel, certain that these wonderful headlines are going to make your career.

  63. You can't wait to talk to Daniel.

  64. This extraordinary guy who's obviously done amazing things.

  65. And you get to the interview and initially you're pretty unimpressed.

  66. Daniel's no young fella.

  67. He's pushing 90.

  68. He's tired.

  69. He's feeling weak the day that you talk with him.

  70. But you launch in and intent on finding the story here in Daniel.

  71. Tell me about the big night with the lions.

  72. What did you do or say?

  73. Daniel says, well, I patted a couple of them on the head and prayed for a bit.

  74. And then I slept for a bit.

  75. You think, all right, well, I'll try another angle.

  76. Tell me, how did you prepare for that moment of being thrown in?

  77. What did you do leading up to that moment?

  78. And Daniel says, well, let's see.

  79. I mean, I did pray a little bit.

  80. But really nothing else.

  81. I mean, I didn't have much time to prepare.

  82. You say, well, Daniel, did you always know you'd be safe?

  83. Maybe this is the angle, the faithful guy who was confident in the face of lions.

  84. And Daniel says, no, not at all, really.

  85. I was kind of wondering, actually.

  86. I mean, I knew God could save me.

  87. But I've lived a long life.

  88. And I was kind of thinking this might actually be the end.

  89. You're getting a little bit frustrated at this point.

  90. It's not coming together the way you expected.

  91. Make it political, maybe.

  92. We'll go political with it.

  93. Daniel, your decision to defy the decree, you know, when you decided to disobey the king,

  94. you really hate that guy, don't you?

  95. Tell me about that king, how awful he is.

  96. Well, actually, I mean, I don't really hate him.

  97. He's a pretty decent guy.

  98. And I just, I didn't make a big decision.

  99. I just prayed like I do every other day.

  100. And with each answer from Daniel, your dreams of a front page career making story are dwindling, aren't they?

  101. This is not the guy, the star you expected to play big on the front page.

  102. There's nothing extraordinary about him, really.

  103. God seems to have done all of the hard work.

  104. I mean, at least some of the heroes in the Bible got to do cool stuff like pick up a slingshot and several stones

  105. or do cool things with their staff.

  106. And Daniel didn't even get to do those things.

  107. There's not much remarkable to tell about Daniel.

  108. Now, we know this morning that Daniel is famous, right?

  109. Particularly for this story, he's a hero of the Bible.

  110. But what I want us to notice this morning is that even in this story,

  111. Daniel does nothing grand or super spiritual.

  112. He puts on display here what I would call a very ordinary faith.

  113. But his faith, his ordinary faith, is in an extraordinary God who works beyond what Daniel or the rest of God's people could have ever imagined.

  114. I mean, if you're a reporter interviewing Daniel for this story, you're realizing you've got the wrong hero, right?

  115. And sadly, you don't have any great front page photos of this awesome lion silencing, king conquering God, do you?

  116. That's not working out for you.

  117. Notice how the story ends in Daniel 6.

  118. Look at verse 25.

  119. At the end of the lion's den story, King Darius wrote to all the peoples, nations, and languages that dwell in the earth,

  120. Peace be multiplied to you.

  121. I make a decree that in all my royal dominion, people are to tremble and fear before the God of Daniel.

  122. For he is the living God, enduring forever.

  123. His kingdom shall never be destroyed, and his dominion shall be to the end.

  124. He delivers and rescues.

  125. He works signs and wonders in heaven and on earth.

  126. He who has saved Daniel from the power of the lions.

  127. So this Daniel prospered during the reign of Darius and the reign of Cyrus the Persian.

  128. What happens at the end of the story?

  129. God is praised and honored, and Daniel gets a footnote, a brief mention.

  130. If you're going to understand the point of the story, and what God wants his people to take away from it,

  131. it's this great God they need to see in the lion's den story.

  132. We learn here that God is the true king who is always on the throne and always able to deliver.

  133. That's what that proclamation says, right?

  134. The one we just read there at the end of the story, he is the living God with the eternal kingdom.

  135. He delivers and rescues even when no one else can.

  136. You see, Darius liked Daniel, didn't he?

  137. They were buddies.

  138. Darius got tricked into passing this law, and when he found out what it would do to Daniel,

  139. remember how Darius responded, verse 14?

  140. The king, when he heard these words, when he heard about Daniel praying,

  141. was much distressed and set his mind to deliver Daniel.

  142. The king said, no, I will deliver Daniel.

  143. That's what I'm going to do.

  144. I'm setting my mind.

  145. That's what's going to happen.

  146. And he labored till the sun went down to rescue him.

  147. All day the king did nothing but seek to rescue Daniel.

  148. But his advisors remind him of the law he's passed.

  149. And at the end of the day, the king commanded, verse 16,

  150. and Daniel was brought and cast into the den of lions.

  151. Despite all the king's efforts, Daniel's cast into the lion's den.

  152. And what does the king say to Daniel?

  153. May your God, whom you serve continually, deliver you.

  154. Why?

  155. Because I can't.

  156. I'm the most powerful man in the world.

  157. And there's nothing else I can do for you, even though I'd like to.

  158. The most powerful human leaders, even when they want to,

  159. are often powerless to rescue.

  160. But God, who is the true king through the reigns of Nebuchadnezzar,

  161. Belshazzar, other kings, and now Darius,

  162. the true king, God is always powerful and able to deliver.

  163. Daniel, Darius says, has your God been able to deliver you?

  164. Yes, he sent his angel to shut the lions' mouths.

  165. God is the one doing the miraculous in this passage.

  166. And Daniel has learned to trust him.

  167. Just to trust him.

  168. You see, Daniel knows who the true king is, doesn't he?

  169. You've got to believe that Daniel helped Darius write this proclamation

  170. at the end of the chapter, don't you?

  171. First of all, it sounds like the ones at the end of most of the other stories

  172. we've read already,

  173. where one of these pagan kings writes a proclamation

  174. about the greatness of Yahweh, Daniel's God.

  175. It sounds like that.

  176. It sounds like Daniel's been helping out.

  177. I mean, after all, if you were Darius, wouldn't you ask for Daniel's help

  178. and how to honor and praise Daniel's God?

  179. So it's Daniel who knows and says in the proclamation

  180. what he's experienced over and over.

  181. The extraordinary reigning and rescuing nature of his God.

  182. That's what we read about in this story.

  183. It's knowing a God like that, that Daniel knows deeply and intimately.

  184. It's knowing a God like that that enables Daniel to have the faith

  185. he's so famous for in this story.

  186. What is his faith like?

  187. You know, what do I have to do to be as amazing and spiritual as Daniel?

  188. Well, he doesn't do anything really remarkable.

  189. It's just ordinary faith.

  190. The kind of faith that you and I are called to have day by day.

  191. And so we see in this story that knowing this extraordinary God

  192. enables ordinary faith to be first daily faith.

  193. Daily faith.

  194. Daniel has been serving in leadership here in Babylon

  195. for the better part of seven decades.

  196. He's served multiple administrations and even different nations

  197. since he first started.

  198. And King Darius is about to set him over the whole kingdom.

  199. He trusts him so much.

  200. But then remember how the other officials feel about that.

  201. How do they feel about Daniel getting promoted?

  202. The high officials and the satraps sought to find a ground for complaint against Daniel.

  203. They're jealous.

  204. They want to complain against Daniel with regard to the kingdom,

  205. but they could find no ground for complaint or any fault

  206. because he was faithful and no error or fault was found in him.

  207. Then these men said,

  208. we shall not find any ground for complaint against this Daniel

  209. unless we find it in connection with the law of his God.

  210. They're jealous of Daniel.

  211. They want to catch him in something.

  212. But as they puzzled over this together,

  213. they determined the only thing they could convict him of was what?

  214. Faith in his God.

  215. You know that old question,

  216. if you were accused of being a Christian,

  217. would there be enough evidence to convict you?

  218. You heard that one before?

  219. Well, Daniel can't get convicted of anything else.

  220. There's nothing else that will stick.

  221. He hasn't been disrespectful or disruptive about his faith.

  222. He's been a trusted and faithful servant of multiple kings.

  223. And at the same time,

  224. those who work with him have learned over the years

  225. that there's no compromise on his faith in God.

  226. It's the one thing they know for sure about him.

  227. In other words,

  228. Daniel did his job with excellence day in and day out.

  229. He was honest and above reproach in his dealings with people.

  230. He persevered through transitions and difficult seasons.

  231. And he didn't hide his faith in God from anyone around him.

  232. Nothing really flashy there, is there?

  233. Pretty ordinary, right?

  234. Quite possibly what you are called to,

  235. where you are,

  236. day after day,

  237. year after year,

  238. faithful service in a pagan land

  239. with an uncompromising commitment

  240. to the true king.

  241. Is that where God's called you?

  242. As the story goes,

  243. those who decide they want to get Daniel out of their way

  244. resort to catching Daniel.

  245. How are they going to catch him with his faith to God?

  246. They say we're going to catch him praying, right?

  247. That we can count on.

  248. We're going to catch Daniel praying to his God

  249. and we need to come up with something

  250. so that it's a bad thing

  251. when we catch him praying to his God.

  252. So they tricked Darius into passing the law

  253. that people should pray only to him

  254. for the next month.

  255. Look at verse 10.

  256. When Daniel knew that the document,

  257. that that decree had been signed,

  258. he went to his house

  259. where he had windows in his upper chamber

  260. open toward Jerusalem.

  261. He got down on his knees three times a day

  262. and prayed and gave thanks before his God

  263. as he had done previously.

  264. This verse is a beautiful picture

  265. of Daniel's praying faith.

  266. If you like alliteration

  267. and you want three D words in your blanks,

  268. in your bulletin,

  269. you can call it dependent faith.

  270. But I didn't want us to miss

  271. the importance of prayer itself

  272. in this passage.

  273. It is, after all,

  274. what gets Daniel thrown in the lion's den, right?

  275. The fact that he's praying to his God.

  276. The fact that Daniel won't compromise

  277. for even a month.

  278. Just take a month off.

  279. The decree will expire

  280. and Daniel won't compromise

  281. even for a month on his praying faith.

  282. The kind of ordinary faith

  283. we are called to have

  284. trusts God enough to live daily

  285. in a way that is faithful to God.

  286. That God can take care of me

  287. if I live day by day for him.

  288. And at the same time,

  289. it also prays regularly to God.

  290. Because we know that he is the one

  291. who does the extraordinary.

  292. That he is the true king.

  293. And so what my heart needs

  294. is to trust and depend on him.

  295. I need to be molded into someone

  296. who trusts and prays.

  297. Look at this verse more closely

  298. and notice just a few instructive things

  299. about Daniel's praying faith.

  300. First, notice the windows

  301. in the upper chamber

  302. open toward Jerusalem.

  303. What does that mean?

  304. That's a strange detail to include.

  305. Well, what it means is that

  306. Daniel's prayers are focused

  307. on God's glory and God's people.

  308. You see, back in 1 Kings 8,

  309. after King Solomon built the temple

  310. to God in Jerusalem,

  311. he prayed a prayer

  312. dedicating the temple to God.

  313. And it anticipated some of the things

  314. that would happen to God's people,

  315. including where Daniel is in exile.

  316. In verse 48 of 1 Kings 8,

  317. Solomon's prayer says this,

  318. God, after they've gone into exile,

  319. if they repent with all their mind

  320. and with all their heart

  321. and the land of their enemies

  322. who carried them captive,

  323. and pray to you toward their land

  324. which you gave to their fathers,

  325. the city that you have chosen

  326. and the house that I have built

  327. for your name,

  328. then here in heaven

  329. your dwelling place,

  330. their prayer and their plea

  331. and maintain their cause,

  332. and forgive your people

  333. who have sinned against you

  334. and all their transgressions

  335. they've committed against you.

  336. Grant them compassion

  337. in the sight of those

  338. who carried them captive,

  339. that they may have compassion on them.

  340. For God, they are your people

  341. and your heritage

  342. which you brought out of Egypt.

  343. It's not just speculation

  344. that Daniel was praying this way.

  345. In Daniel chapter 9,

    Daniel 9 chapter mention

  346. a prayer of Daniel is recorded

  347. from the exact same year

  348. as the lion's den story,

  349. and these are the things he's praying.

  350. Praying for the people of God.

  351. God, forgive us.

  352. God, bless us.

  353. God, restore us to your land

  354. and the temple where you dwell with us.

  355. Your presence with your people

  356. is what I long for and hope for.

  357. God, bless, forgive,

  358. restore your people.

  359. Do you pray that way?

  360. Do you pray for God's glory

  361. through His care for His people?

  362. Do you get reoriented

  363. by focusing on God's glory

  364. and His kingdom?

  365. Is that what centers you?

  366. Is that what's most important?

  367. That's how Daniel prays.

  368. Next, notice that he got down

  369. on his knees three times a day

  370. and prayed and gave thanks

  371. before his God.

  372. Thanking God?

  373. You may take that for granted

  374. in prayer,

  375. but seriously?

  376. For what?

  377. You're in exile.

  378. People are trying to kill you.

  379. No one you live with

  380. honors your God.

  381. And you're thanking God

  382. three times a day?

  383. Every day?

  384. This is the eternal focus

  385. of Daniel's prayers.

  386. Thanking God

  387. despite the current circumstances

  388. because he trusts God's

  389. eternal promises

  390. to His people.

  391. He looks toward Jerusalem.

  392. He knows God has promised

  393. to restore His people.

  394. He knows despite the pain

  395. of the day,

  396. He has a promise

  397. of a brighter future.

  398. And so he thanks God

  399. over and over

  400. and over in prayer.

  401. Does God hear more gripes

  402. or gratitude

  403. from us?

  404. Listen, He does invite us

  405. to pour out our hearts

  406. before Him.

  407. But our prayers

  408. should be bathed

  409. in the promises

  410. of His Word

  411. so that our hearts

  412. pour out not only

  413. pleas for help

  414. in the difficulties

  415. of life,

  416. but also promises

  417. of God

  418. that ground us

  419. with an eternal perspective

  420. in the midst

  421. of those difficulties.

  422. Listen, life is hard

  423. and God wants

  424. to hear about it.

  425. But He wants you

  426. to see His Word

  427. and to know

  428. His promises

  429. to care for you

  430. and His eternal hope

  431. stands sure.

  432. And Daniel

  433. holds on to that,

  434. thanking God

  435. over and over,

  436. looking towards

  437. the promised land

  438. and saying,

  439. I know God

  440. has something

  441. for me.

  442. Finally,

  443. notice that he prays

  444. three times a day

  445. as he had done

  446. previously.

  447. This isn't something

  448. Daniel like all of a sudden

  449. starts to do

  450. because it's a big crisis,

  451. is it?

  452. This is Daniel's pattern.

  453. Not some magic formula,

  454. kneel down,

  455. face Jerusalem

  456. three times a day

  457. and God will hear

  458. your prayers.

  459. No, that's not the point.

  460. But this is Daniel's pattern.

  461. No decree from any human king

  462. is going to change

  463. his commitment.

  464. It's Daniel's pattern

  465. developed in the easy days

  466. that carries

  467. through the hard days.

  468. If we pray in peace,

  469. we will pray in peril

  470. when it's harder to start.

  471. If we depend on God

  472. in private,

  473. we will depend on God

  474. in public

  475. as we have seen Daniel do

  476. time and again already.

  477. His public faithfulness,

  478. being able to live

  479. day by day for God,

  480. is rooted in what's going on

  481. up in his room

  482. facing Jerusalem,

  483. pleading with his God,

  484. his private faithfulness,

  485. where he entrusts himself

  486. to the true king

  487. and centers his heart,

  488. brings it back

  489. day after day

  490. and moment by moment

  491. to what really matters

  492. and who really reigns.

  493. That's what Daniel

  494. re-centers on every day.

  495. What really matters

  496. as I go into

  497. where God's called me today

  498. and who really reigns?

  499. Who's in charge today

  500. even if it doesn't

  501. feel like it?

  502. That's vital for us.

  503. Again, though,

  504. I mean,

  505. it makes it sound good

  506. but nothing really remarkable,

  507. right?

  508. He prays.

  509. I mean,

  510. I was told

  511. when I was like two

  512. that God's people

  513. were supposed to pray.

  514. My daughters pray.

  515. They've been praying

  516. since that was

  517. one of the first things,

  518. ways they learned to talk.

  519. That's not really

  520. that impressive.

  521. Daniel prays.

  522. But in getting down

  523. on his knees

  524. day after day,

  525. Daniel reminds us

  526. that in the kingdom

  527. of the true king,

  528. greatness and heroism

  529. looks like bowing down,

  530. not stepping up.

  531. Greatness is not

  532. remarkable feats of strength,

  533. some wonderful,

  534. amazing things

  535. you've never imagined

  536. doing before.

  537. It's not shutting

  538. lions' mouths

  539. with your wonderful skills

  540. or your magic powers.

  541. God does that stuff.

  542. God does those

  543. extraordinary things.

  544. But it's faithful dependence.

  545. That's what greatness

  546. looks like

  547. in the kingdom

  548. of the true king.

  549. Faithful dependence.

  550. Ordinary prayers

  551. to an extraordinary God.

  552. Finally, of course,

  553. we actually get to

  554. the lion's den.

  555. Better get there.

  556. See briefly

  557. Daniel's desperate faith.

  558. His faith

  559. when the crisis hits.

  560. What does it

  561. look like then?

  562. He's trusted his God

  563. day in and day out

  564. for decades.

  565. He's been praying

  566. to his God

  567. over and over

  568. and then

  569. the crisis comes.

  570. Your world

  571. is suddenly

  572. turned upside down.

  573. Your life

  574. is all of a sudden

  575. in the balance.

  576. what happens?

  577. Verse 23.

  578. The king comes.

  579. Daniel's

  580. safe

  581. and he's exceedingly glad

  582. and commanded Daniel

  583. be taken up

  584. out of the den.

  585. So Daniel was taken up

  586. out of the den

  587. and no kind of harm

  588. was found on him

  589. because

  590. he had trusted

  591. in his God.

  592. Because

  593. even in the midst

  594. of the lions

  595. he had trusted

  596. in his God.

  597. Why did Daniel

  598. trust?

  599. Because God

  600. is always

  601. on the throne

  602. and always

  603. able

  604. to deliver.

  605. He can be trusted

  606. even when it appears

  607. all is lost.

  608. Even when

  609. all other options

  610. seem to have

  611. been exhausted.

  612. Even when you

  613. look around

  614. and there's no good

  615. reason for hope.

  616. He can be trusted.

  617. We could suspect

  618. Daniel was probably

  619. like his friends

  620. in the face

  621. of the fiery furnace.

  622. Not certain

  623. how

  624. God would

  625. deliver

  626. but confident

  627. God would

  628. deliver.

  629. Daniel didn't know

  630. what the lions

  631. would do

  632. but he knew

  633. that God

  634. could be trusted.

  635. He didn't depend

  636. on his own strength.

  637. He didn't trust

  638. his own plans,

  639. try to come up

  640. with a way out.

  641. He didn't hope

  642. in his power

  643. or position

  644. to use his influence

  645. to rescue him.

  646. He entrusted

  647. himself

  648. to God

  649. which as we learned

  650. last week

  651. is always

  652. the safe place

  653. to be.

  654. Even in the

  655. lion's den.

  656. Even in your

  657. crisis

  658. or tragedy.

  659. See Daniel

  660. may have been

  661. spared from

  662. the lions

  663. but he's

  664. still in exile

  665. in Babylon.

  666. There's still

  667. a crisis

  668. for Daniel.

  669. He still

  670. hasn't seen

  671. some remarkable

  672. repentance

  673. or restoration

  674. on behalf

  675. of God's people

  676. the way a faithful

  677. prophet might hope

  678. to see in his

  679. lifetime.

  680. He's 90 now

  681. and not really

  682. seeing much

  683. change.

  684. He's still

  685. in a crisis.

  686. But God

  687. has reminded him

  688. again

  689. that Yahweh

  690. is the true

  691. king.

  692. He's still

  693. on the throne

  694. and still

  695. able

  696. to deliver.

  697. That's what we

  698. want our kids

  699. to know

  700. isn't it?

  701. Daniel and the

  702. lion's den

  703. is one of those

  704. stories that

  705. kids love.

  706. It's a great

  707. story to tell

  708. our kids

  709. isn't it?

  710. But what is it

  711. that we want

  712. them to hear?

  713. Listen

  714. if the message

  715. of the story

  716. of Daniel

  717. is about

  718. how great

  719. Daniel is

  720. in the face

  721. of lions

  722. we got two

  723. problems.

  724. First of all

  725. that's not

  726. the point.

  727. We've missed

  728. the whole point

  729. of the story.

  730. Second of all

  731. how many

  732. of your kids

  733. have been

  734. thrown into

  735. a lion's

  736. den recently?

  737. I could have

  738. asked them

  739. up here

  740. and they

  741. all would have

  742. said no.

  743. How great

  744. Daniel was

  745. when he

  746. hit the

  747. lion?

  748. No.

  749. Never been

  750. there.

  751. But what you

  752. have an

  753. opportunity to

  754. do when you

  755. look at the

  756. stories of the

  757. Bible that

  758. your kids

  759. love is to

  760. see what they

  761. learn about

  762. God.

  763. Who is God

  764. there in the

  765. story of Daniel

  766. in the lion's

  767. den?

  768. And when you

  769. find there a

  770. God who can

  771. be trusted in

  772. all kinds of

  773. circumstances

  774. then your

  775. kids are

  776. helped to

  777. trust him in

  778. whatever difficult

  779. circumstances they

  780. face.

  781. When they see

  782. God as the

  783. true king

  784. always on the

  785. throne always

  786. able to

  787. deliver then

  788. they have a

  789. king they

  790. can trust

  791. wherever they

  792. are.

  793. One of the

  794. reasons I

  795. started out

  796. having you

  797. imagine being

  798. a journalist

  799. with all those

  800. silly headlines

  801. is that there's

  802. definitely a story

  803. to be told

  804. here in

  805. Daniel 6

  806. isn't there?

  807. Who recognizes

  808. that there's a

  809. story to be

  810. told?

  811. Darius a

  812. pagan king

  813. sees there's a

  814. story to be

  815. told he knows

  816. it at the end

  817. remember verse

  818. 25?

  819. Darius wrote

  820. to whom?

  821. To all the

  822. peoples nations

  823. and languages

  824. that dwell in

  825. all the earth

  826. you got to

  827. know about

  828. this there's a

  829. story to be

  830. told a story

  831. that should be

  832. told to everyone

  833. by very

  834. ordinary people

  835. about the

  836. true king

  837. about the

  838. God they can

  839. trust

  840. about how

  841. this story

  842. is a picture

  843. of God's

  844. ultimate rescue

  845. and deliverance

  846. of his people

  847. through Jesus

  848. what's your

  849. story?

  850. Is it

  851. very

  852. very

  853. ordinary?

  854. Do you feel

  855. much less

  856. spiritual

  857. than Daniel?

  858. I do

  859. God hasn't

  860. called us

  861. to be

  862. extraordinary

  863. by definition

  864. most of us

  865. on most days

  866. will be very

  867. ordinary

  868. we feel that

  869. don't we?

  870. Sometimes it

  871. hurts

  872. but being

  873. extraordinary

  874. is his

  875. job

  876. not ours

  877. I think

  878. of the

  879. amazing things

  880. God does

  881. with ordinary

  882. faith

  883. and I

  884. think of

  885. the

  886. elderly

  887. church

  888. member

  889. who

  890. can't get

  891. out much

  892. anymore

  893. but trusts

  894. God for

  895. every breath

  896. wakes up

  897. and faithfully

  898. gets through

  899. the day

  900. with the only

  901. activity more

  902. consistent than

  903. doctor's appointments

  904. being

  905. prayer

  906. day

  907. after day

  908. after day

  909. ordinary

  910. faith

  911. and an

  912. extraordinary

  913. God

  914. who does

  915. miraculous

  916. things with

  917. those mundane

  918. prayers

  919. I think of

  920. the young

  921. single mom

  922. who works

  923. so hard

  924. and in the

  925. face of

  926. seemingly

  927. overwhelming

  928. daily

  929. struggles

  930. tells her

  931. kids the

  932. story about

  933. a great

  934. God who

  935. provides

  936. better than

  937. she can

  938. and then

  939. praise to

  940. that God

  941. for her

  942. kids

  943. over

  944. and over

  945. and over

  946. ordinary

  947. faith

  948. and an

  949. extraordinary

  950. God

  951. I think of

  952. the government

  953. engineer who

  954. goes to the

  955. same office

  956. every day

  957. for the

  958. 28th year

  959. doing things

  960. that many

  961. days don't

  962. seem to

  963. matter at

  964. all

  965. and like

  966. Daniel most

  967. of those

  968. days not

  969. seeing any

  970. of the

  971. amazing

  972. things that

  973. God is

  974. doing

  975. no evidence

  976. of him

  977. at work

  978. at all

  979. but praying

  980. for his

  981. co-workers

  982. working

  983. faithfully

  984. sharing his

  985. struggles with

  986. them over

  987. and over

  988. even when

  989. they mock

  990. his trust

  991. in God

  992. ordinary

  993. faith in

  994. an extraordinary

  995. God

  996. I think of

  997. the blog

  998. many of you

  999. will have

  1000. read

  1001. a young

  1002. mom

  1003. and PCA

  1004. pastor's

  1005. wife named

  1006. Kara Tippetts

  1007. who died

  1008. last year

  1009. of cancer

  1010. who through

  1011. her blog

  1012. which you

  1013. may know

  1014. as mundane

  1015. faithfulness

  1016. shared her

  1017. story with

  1018. thousands

  1019. an honest

  1020. story of

  1021. weakness

  1022. sickness

  1023. struggles

  1024. and faith

  1025. in the midst

  1026. of cancer

  1027. in a God

  1028. who would

  1029. deliver her

  1030. forever

  1031. and care

  1032. for her

  1033. husband

  1034. and kids

  1035. when she

  1036. was gone

  1037. I think of

  1038. the letter

  1039. one of our

  1040. members sent

  1041. to co-workers

  1042. this week

  1043. after getting

  1044. transferred

  1045. at work

  1046. it begins

  1047. this way

  1048. someday

  1049. everything

  1050. will make

  1051. perfect sense

  1052. so for now

  1053. laugh at the

  1054. confusion

  1055. smile through

  1056. the tears

  1057. and keep

  1058. reminding yourself

  1059. everything happens

  1060. for a reason

  1061. my life has

  1062. always brought

  1063. change at

  1064. inopportune times

  1065. that don't line

  1066. up with what I

  1067. think should

  1068. happen

  1069. the Lord does

  1070. that for me

  1071. to teach me to

  1072. trust him

  1073. on a deeper

  1074. level

  1075. pretty ordinary

  1076. people

  1077. telling the

  1078. story

  1079. story

  1080. of an

  1081. extraordinary

  1082. God

  1083. who is

  1084. worthy

  1085. of their

  1086. trust

  1087. in some

  1088. tough

  1089. times

  1090. just like

  1091. Daniel

  1092. I think

  1093. making the

  1094. hall of fame

  1095. of faith

  1096. alongside

  1097. Daniel

  1098. because that's

  1099. all he did

  1100. isn't it

  1101. faithful

  1102. in work

  1103. faithful

  1104. in prayer

  1105. faithful

  1106. in crisis

  1107. watching

  1108. God

  1109. do the

  1110. extraordinary

  1111. all

  1112. peoples

  1113. nations

  1114. and languages

  1115. need to

  1116. hear the

  1117. story

  1118. of this

  1119. delivering

  1120. God

  1121. that's

  1122. the story

  1123. that is

  1124. your story

  1125. just like

  1126. it's the

  1127. story

  1128. that's

  1129. Daniel's

  1130. story

  1131. will you

  1132. tell that

  1133. story

  1134. of how

  1135. he has

  1136. rescued

  1137. you

  1138. through

  1139. Jesus

  1140. of how

  1141. he

  1142. delivered

  1143. you

  1144. from

  1145. your

  1146. most

  1147. desperate

  1148. crisis

  1149. and your

  1150. greatest

  1151. enemies

  1152. how he

  1153. endured

  1154. the cross

  1155. for you

  1156. and you

  1157. just

  1158. entrusted

  1159. yourself

  1160. to him

  1161. that's

  1162. the story

  1163. isn't it

  1164. he did

  1165. the amazing

  1166. work

  1167. you just

  1168. entrusted

  1169. yourself

  1170. to him

  1171. I don't

  1172. think one

  1173. ordinary

  1174. housewife

  1175. in the

  1176. 1700s

  1177. in England

  1178. could have

  1179. foreseen

  1180. how she

  1181. would tell

  1182. that story

  1183. to peoples

  1184. and nations

  1185. and languages

  1186. she was

  1187. the 25th

  1188. of 25

  1189. children

  1190. in her

  1191. family

  1192. that wasn't

  1193. hard enough

  1194. she had

  1195. 19

  1196. children

  1197. of her

  1198. own

  1199. only

  1200. 10

  1201. of those

  1202. however

  1203. survived

  1204. infancy

  1205. she

  1206. buried

  1207. 11

  1208. children

  1209. in her

  1210. life

  1211. her

  1212. husband

  1213. left her

  1214. for a

  1215. season

  1216. and she

  1217. raised the

  1218. others

  1219. alone

  1220. then

  1221. during

  1222. that

  1223. time

  1224. she

  1225. faced

  1226. poverty

  1227. constantly

  1228. sickness

  1229. often

  1230. and tragedy

  1231. regularly

  1232. but she

  1233. told her

  1234. children

  1235. about

  1236. God

  1237. and changed

  1238. diapers

  1239. and prayed

  1240. for them

  1241. and made

  1242. meals

  1243. and prayed

  1244. for them

  1245. and cleaned

  1246. the house

  1247. and prayed

  1248. for them

  1249. she hardly

  1250. had time

  1251. for praying

  1252. to be honest

  1253. but they

  1254. would find

  1255. her

  1256. all the

  1257. time

  1258. with her

  1259. apron

  1260. thrown up

  1261. over her

  1262. head

  1263. and they

  1264. knew not

  1265. to interrupt

  1266. that was

  1267. the way

  1268. she got

  1269. private time

  1270. with God

  1271. throwing her

  1272. apron

  1273. over her

  1274. head

  1275. and talking

  1276. with him

  1277. for a while

  1278. they knew

  1279. who she

  1280. was talking

  1281. to and they

  1282. knew she

  1283. was probably

  1284. talking to

  1285. God

  1286. about them

  1287. and they

  1288. waited

  1289. until she

  1290. was finished

  1291. she never

  1292. did anything

  1293. the world

  1294. would call

  1295. extraordinary

  1296. never

  1297. published

  1298. a book

  1299. never

  1300. made

  1301. a fortune

  1302. but

  1303. Susanna

  1304. Wesley

  1305. is called

  1306. the mother

  1307. of Methodism

  1308. two of

  1309. those

  1310. 19

  1311. kids

  1312. John

  1313. and

  1314. Charles

  1315. Wesley

  1316. began

  1317. the Christian

  1318. movement

  1319. that has

  1320. told the

  1321. story

  1322. of a

  1323. great

  1324. God

  1325. who does

  1326. extraordinary

  1327. things

  1328. for ordinary

  1329. people

  1330. to millions

  1331. upon millions

  1332. around the

  1333. world

  1334. you know

  1335. what story

  1336. they told

  1337. they told

  1338. the story

  1339. that they

  1340. heard

  1341. from their

  1342. mom

  1343. they told

  1344. the story

  1345. of

  1346. praying

  1347. all the

  1348. time

  1349. in the

  1350. midst of

  1351. everything

  1352. and a

  1353. God who

  1354. could be

  1355. trusted

  1356. who would

  1357. listen

  1358. and act

  1359. she didn't

  1360. get to

  1361. see the

  1362. millions

  1363. God

  1364. used her

  1365. story

  1366. to impact

  1367. but you

  1368. know

  1369. neither did

  1370. Daniel

  1371. not during

  1372. their

  1373. ordinary

  1374. lives

  1375. on this

  1376. earth

  1377. but God

  1378. worked

  1379. he worked

  1380. in extraordinary

  1381. ways

  1382. we serve

  1383. an

  1384. extraordinary

  1385. God

  1386. in very

  1387. ordinary

  1388. ways

  1389. most days

  1390. when we

  1391. face lions

  1392. when we

  1393. go to

  1394. work

  1395. tomorrow

  1396. morning

  1397. when we

  1398. kneel

  1399. to pray

  1400. tonight

  1401. may

  1402. that

  1403. reality

  1404. give us

  1405. great

  1406. hope

  1407. let's

  1408. pray

  1409. father

  1410. that you

  1411. listen to

  1412. our

  1413. prayers

  1414. that you

  1415. care about

  1416. our lives

  1417. that you

  1418. act

  1419. on our

  1420. behalf

  1421. that you

  1422. are the

  1423. one on

  1424. the throne

  1425. today

  1426. is our

  1427. only

  1428. comfort

  1429. that there

  1430. is a

  1431. hope

  1432. because of

  1433. that for

  1434. the future

  1435. is a

  1436. great gift

  1437. of your

  1438. grace

  1439. to us

  1440. that in

  1441. sending

  1442. your son

  1443. you have

  1444. rescued us

  1445. forever

  1446. thank you

  1447. give us

  1448. hearts to

  1449. trust you

  1450. give us

  1451. hearts that

  1452. trust you

  1453. while we do

  1454. very ordinary

  1455. things

  1456. while we do

  1457. things that we

  1458. wish were

  1459. greater

  1460. and gained

  1461. more notoriety

  1462. and fame

  1463. for ourselves

  1464. give us

  1465. hearts that

  1466. are delighted

  1467. for you

  1468. to be the

  1469. one that

  1470. gets all

  1471. the headlines

  1472. whose glory

  1473. is promoted

  1474. ahead of

  1475. ours

  1476. Jesus

  1477. meet us

  1478. and remind

  1479. us that you're

  1480. working in

  1481. great ways

  1482. right where

  1483. we are

  1484. we give you

  1485. thanks for

  1486. that
