  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. Yes, we did pick every song we could think of about that same theme this morning and

  5. sang them all.

  6. So that's always fun.

  7. Here's the roadmap for this morning.

  8. Long introduction, short sermon, great lunch.

  9. Okay?

  10. Y'all, anybody up for that?

  11. Yep, you in for that?

  12. You're voting for the short sermon part, aren't you?

  13. Those of you who sat through Sunday school with me already deserve the short sermon part.

  14. It's just for you.

  15. But there is a long introduction.

  16. So let me start with that long introduction before we read our passage for this morning.

  17. We're at the point in the book of Daniel where we begin to shift from stories about the life

  18. of Daniel and his friends living in Babylon and how they engage there, things that happen

  19. in their lives, to visions that Daniel has of the future, visions that happen during those

  20. years where there are fiery furnaces and lions' dens and so forth.

  21. But visions of the future God gives to Daniel that are recorded in these last six chapters

  22. of the book.

  23. This is what now in the second half of the book is called apocalyptic literature.

  24. What that means is that this is the revelation of the Old Testament.

  25. Some of you I know have studied revelation recently.

  26. If you've ever studied revelation, you know what it's like, right?

  27. It's chock full of incredible imagery and brilliant metaphors, wild pictures of beasts and battles

  28. and heaven and hell, all of these sorts of things.

  29. And that dynamic doesn't mean that the things described aren't real.

  30. It just means we recognize that often they can't be fully described by even the one who's

  31. seeing the vision.

  32. The emotion that's meant to be communicated by them requires this intense imagery, these

  33. vivid pictures.

  34. In fact, it's clear here in Daniel's visions that the ones he has should startle us, should

  35. some of them frighten us, should others of them shock us.

  36. That's what happens to Daniel himself when he sees these things in chapter 7.

  37. But I want us to ask the question, what is apocalyptic literature about?

  38. What are these visions of?

  39. What is it that we're seeing and reading?

  40. Perhaps when you think of apocalypse, you think of the end of the world, right?

  41. A tragic ending, a gloom and doom and terrible things happening in the end of the world.

  42. That's the way it's popularly talked about.

  43. That's not entirely unhelpful, actually.

  44. Daniel does have visions about other parts of history that lead up to the end times, but

  45. much of this is about the end.

  46. That's why there's so much controversy around so much of it.

  47. What does it mean and how's it all going to be in the end times?

  48. And much of it is indeed dark and dangerous.

  49. But it's important to understand this about Revelation, the book of Revelation, as well as

  50. this apocalyptic literature here in the next few chapters of Daniel, it's not just given

  51. to be scary and dark.

  52. As dark as they are, God gives the visions of the future and of heaven to his people, not

  53. merely to frighten them, but to encourage his struggling people.

  54. So that they are not surprised to find themselves suffering and sinking.

  55. So that they can be hopeful in a day yet to come when God will be finally victorious, when

  56. God's enemies will be judged, and when God's people will be saved.

  57. That's part of this literature as well.

  58. And that's why I want us in the next few weeks to slow down and get a look at what I'll call

  59. visions of heaven.

  60. We're going to jump around a little in Daniel 7 through 12 each week, but we'll be looking

  61. at those visions that Daniel has.

  62. You see, I would contend that we don't think about heaven enough.

  63. I don't.

  64. I don't think about heaven enough.

  65. I suspect many of you are like me in that thoughts of heaven get put into this category

  66. of I'll use them when I get there.

  67. That will be nice to know when I get there, but I'm not there yet.

  68. Kind of the way I treat thoughts of retirement.

  69. Or some of you may treat thoughts of adulthood or growing up and being a big...

  70. I mean, there's a lot to learn about that, but I'll handle it when I get there.

  71. That will be helpful to me when I arrive at that point.

  72. And you can see when you think about retirement or adulthood how unhelpful and dangerous that

  73. can be to put off thoughts of what that will be like until you're already in the midst of

  74. it.

  75. The same is true with heaven.

  76. We feel like we've got all we can handle today, right?

  77. I'm just trying to make it through day by day.

  78. I have no time to think of heaven.

  79. It'll be there when I need it.

  80. After all, as many of us have heard, when we think about heaven, we know that we don't

  81. want to be so heavenly minded that we're no earthly good, right?

  82. That's a common phrase.

  83. Johnny Cash even sang about that.

  84. I don't want to be like that.

  85. I mean, I want to be actually earthly good.

  86. I don't want to walk around with my head in the clouds, no help to anybody.

  87. But the Bible actually paints quite a different picture about the practical value today of

  88. thoughts of heaven.

  89. We've seen already in the book of Daniel, and we're going to see more, how remembering

  90. eternal realities and God's eternal perspective enables us to engage as we are called to here

  91. in this world.

  92. Paul agrees with that need to think more of heaven for today.

  93. Colossians chapter 3, if then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that

    Colossians 3 chapter mention

  94. are above where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.

  95. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on the earth.

  96. Think of heaven.

  97. Our minds are to be set on those eternal realities, right?

  98. C.S.

  99. Lewis has famously said it this way in his classic Mere Christianity.

  100. He says,

  101. A continual looking forward to the eternal world is not, as some modern people think,

  102. a form of escapism or wishful thinking, but one of the things a Christian is meant to do.

  103. It does not mean that we're to leave the present world as it is.

  104. If you read history, you will find that the Christians who did most for the present world

  105. were just those who thought most of the next.

  106. The apostles themselves who set on foot the conversion of the Roman Empire,

  107. the great men who built up the Middle Ages,

  108. the English evangelicals who abolished the slave trade,

  109. all left their mark on earth precisely because their minds were occupied with heaven.

  110. It is since Christians have largely ceased to think of the other world

  111. that they have become so ineffective in this one.

  112. Aim at heaven and you will get earth thrown in.

  113. Aim at earth and you will get neither, Lewis says.

  114. I think this is exactly why in the midst of the difficult realities of life

  115. in which Daniel found himself, that God kept giving him these visions.

  116. All the way through the stories we've already studied,

  117. what was keeping Daniel going?

  118. God was giving him visions of heaven.

  119. It's what he actually needed to live there in Babylon.

  120. I think a clear vision of heaven is helpful to us in at least two ways

  121. before we jump into the first one.

  122. First, it's helpful to us because seeing the end of the story,

  123. understanding where the story's headed and what the end is,

  124. helps us live appropriately in our part in the story.

  125. Theologian N.T. Wright uses the example of a Shakespearean play

  126. to talk about how this works.

  127. Shakespeare, if you're not an English major,

  128. often wrote his dramas in five acts, okay?

  129. So imagine that you're a character in a Shakespearean drama,

  130. maybe Hamlet, and you've read the first three acts.

  131. You've lived in them there.

  132. You know what Hamlet is like there.

  133. And then if you get act five, you know the end of the story.

  134. You may lose your script for act four,

  135. but you're going to have a pretty good idea how Hamlet should act,

  136. what kinds of things he would say,

  137. what's appropriate for him in that context,

  138. because you understand the story,

  139. where it started and where it's headed.

  140. If we imagine that the first three acts, so to speak,

  141. or what the Bible tells us in terms of the creation of the world,

  142. the fall of man, the history of Old Testament Israel,

  143. the coming of Jesus,

  144. there's the beginning of the story,

  145. and we know that.

  146. If we can live today in light of where the story is headed,

  147. in light of the end, if we know the end,

  148. then we'll know how to live as we ought right now

  149. in act four, so to speak, where we are.

  150. If we know where it's all going,

  151. if we know who finally wins,

  152. if we know what really matters eternally,

  153. we will live now as we should.

  154. Getting a vision of the future helps us live now

  155. in our part of God's story.

  156. And then secondly, a clear vision of heaven

  157. also helps us because there's a present reality

  158. that it reminds us of.

  159. I'll illustrate that with this story.

  160. When George Shultz was Secretary of State

  161. in Ronald Reagan's administration,

  162. Shultz kept a globe in his office.

  163. And whenever ambassadors to other countries

  164. would come in and meet with him,

  165. he would send them out,

  166. and on their way out the door,

  167. he would say,

  168. tell me, where's your country?

  169. Point to your country on that globe on your way out.

  170. And every one of them had done that very successfully.

  171. That was a good sign.

  172. You know, if you couldn't find where you were headed,

  173. you needed to stay back and get some more training.

  174. And then one day,

  175. a guy named Mike Mansfield was in his office.

  176. This Mansfield was the ambassador to Japan.

  177. And they met,

  178. and Mansfield got up to leave,

  179. and just like everybody else,

  180. he was asked,

  181. point to your country.

  182. And Mansfield spun the globe

  183. and put his finger on the United States of America

  184. and turned back to Shultz and said,

  185. this is my country.

  186. And Shultz told that story

  187. to every other ambassador that he would meet with.

  188. And he would say to them,

  189. never forget,

  190. you're over there in that country,

  191. but your country is the United States.

  192. You are there to represent us.

  193. It is a present reality for us as God's people

  194. that we are citizens of where?

  195. Of heaven.

  196. That that's our home.

  197. That that is the country

  198. that we are truly first and foremost citizens of.

  199. We're exiles on earth.

  200. Our true home is in heaven

  201. where we are already seated with Christ,

  202. Paul tells us.

  203. So a clear vision of heaven

  204. helps us remember

  205. not merely what will be true one day someday,

  206. but what is already true today,

  207. that we are ambassadors for heaven

  208. and the king of heaven here on earth.

  209. All right,

  210. thus endeth the long introduction.

  211. All of it serving to say

  212. for the next couple of weeks

  213. that we,

  214. like Daniel,

  215. need a clear vision of heaven.

  216. The first one we'll see today

  217. comes in chapter 7

  218. at verse 9.

  219. Daniel 7 at verse 9.

  220. This is God's holy word.

  221. Daniel says,

  222. As I looked,

  223. thrones were placed

  224. and the ancient of days

  225. took his seat.

  226. His clothing was white as snow

  227. and the hair of his head

  228. like pure wool.

  229. His throne was fiery flames.

  230. Its wheels were burning fire.

  231. A stream of fire issued

  232. and came out from before him.

  233. A thousand thousands served him

  234. and ten thousand times

  235. ten thousand stood before him.

  236. The court sat in judgment

  237. and the books were opened.

  238. Thus far,

  239. God's holy word.

  240. Let's pray.

  241. God,

  242. this is your word

  243. and we need your help

  244. that we might see you

  245. more clearly.

  246. Holy Spirit,

  247. teach us,

  248. speak in ways

  249. that I can't

  250. to my heart,

  251. to all of our hearts,

  252. that we might be changed today

  253. by what we see

  254. of one day,

  255. someday.

  256. We ask it in Jesus' name.

  257. Amen.

  258. Have you ever seen

  259. a decorated military officer

  260. from a distance?

  261. You know,

  262. across a room

  263. or in a small shot

  264. on television?

  265. And you've seen him

  266. and you see his chest

  267. decorated with all sorts

  268. of medals and everything

  269. and just from a distance

  270. your initial impression is,

  271. wow,

  272. that's impressive.

  273. This guy is pretty special.

  274. This is no average guy.

  275. He's important.

  276. He's heroic.

  277. I can see the medals.

  278. I can tell there are stars

  279. on his shoulder.

  280. Due to your distance from him

  281. or perhaps your ignorance

  282. of military honors,

  283. you may not know

  284. any of the specifics.

  285. The things there

  286. may not mean anything

  287. particular to you,

  288. but at first glance

  289. you're impressed anyway.

  290. And then you get up close

  291. and you shake his hand

  292. and you learn

  293. that the stars were earned

  294. by a particular rank

  295. and that that purple heart

  296. is what it's called

  297. was earned

  298. in a particular incident

  299. where he acted

  300. very heroically

  301. and now you're impressed again,

  302. right?

  303. But in a different way

  304. by knowing the particulars

  305. of who the man is.

  306. I think we need to have

  307. both of those experiences

  308. this morning

  309. with the vision

  310. Daniel gets

  311. of the Ancient of Days

  312. on his throne.

  313. Remember,

  314. these visions

  315. are meant to evoke

  316. emotional response,

  317. to paint a picture,

  318. give an overall impression

  319. of something.

  320. What is the image

  321. portrayed here

  322. when you just listen

  323. and imagine

  324. the picture that's painted?

  325. Listen to it again.

  326. As I looked,

  327. thrones were placed

  328. and the Ancient of Days

  329. took his seat.

  330. His clothing was white as snow

  331. and the hair of his head

  332. like pure wool.

  333. His throne was fiery flames,

  334. its wheels were burning fire.

  335. A stream of fire issued

  336. and came out from before him.

  337. A thousand thousand served him

  338. and ten thousand times

  339. ten thousand stood before him.

  340. The court sat in judgment

  341. and the books were opened.

  342. Whatever the particulars,

  343. even if you don't know

  344. what any of that means,

  345. you can already tell

  346. this is a vision

  347. of someone important.

  348. Right?

  349. The words that came to mind

  350. for me

  351. as I read it this week

  352. were majesty,

  353. authority,

  354. grandeur,

  355. images like that.

  356. Picture the infinite sea

  357. of people bowing before him.

  358. That's what's being pictured here.

  359. Bowing before him

  360. and surrounding him

  361. to serve him.

  362. infinite stretching

  363. as far as the eye can see.

  364. John's vision of God's throne room

  365. in Revelation 4

  366. highlights some different details

  367. but also shows us the response.

  368. These other people

  369. surrounding the throne

  370. who are responding

  371. to what they see on the throne.

  372. Let's read this description

  373. and get a picture of it

  374. from Revelation 4.

  375. At once I was in the spirit

  376. and behold a throne stood in heaven

  377. with one seated on the throne

  378. and he who sat there

  379. had the appearance

  380. of Jasper and Carnelian

  381. and around the throne

  382. was a rainbow

  383. that had the appearance

  384. of an emerald.

  385. Around the throne

  386. were 24 thrones

  387. and seated on the thrones

  388. were 24 elders

  389. clothed in white garments

  390. with golden crowns

  391. on their heads.

  392. From the throne

  393. came flashes of lightning

  394. and rumblings

  395. and peals of thunder

  396. and before the throne

  397. were burning seven torches

  398. of fire

  399. which are the seven spirits

  400. of God

  401. and before the throne

  402. there was as it were

  403. a sea of glass

  404. like crystal

  405. and around the throne

  406. on each side of the throne

  407. are four living creatures

  408. full of eyes

  409. in front and behind.

  410. The first living creature

  411. like a lion

  412. the second living creature

  413. like an ox

  414. the third living creature

  415. with the face of a man

  416. and the fourth living creature

  417. like an eagle in flight.

  418. And the four living creatures

  419. each of them

  420. with six wings

  421. are full of eyes

  422. all around and within

  423. and day and night

  424. they never cease to say

  425. holy, holy, holy

  426. is the Lord God Almighty

  427. who was and is

  428. and is to come.

  429. And whenever the living creatures

  430. give glory and honor

  431. and thanks to him

  432. who is seated on the throne

  433. who lives forever and ever

  434. the 24 elders fall down

  435. before him

  436. who is seated on the throne

  437. and worship him

  438. who lives forever and ever

  439. they cast their crowns

  440. before the throne

  441. saying worthy are you

  442. our Lord and God

  443. to receive glory

  444. and honor and power

  445. for you created all things

  446. and by your will

  447. they existed

  448. and were created.

  449. You get a picture

  450. of their response

  451. when they see

  452. the throne of God?

  453. Holy, holy, holy

  454. they keep saying

  455. all the time.

  456. Worthy of honor

  457. and glory

  458. and power

  459. that's the picture

  460. that we get

  461. that's the response

  462. that ought to come.

  463. There's no doubt

  464. when we read

  465. Daniel's vision

  466. we've got a majestic ruler

  467. sitting on the throne

  468. someone awesome

  469. and glorious.

  470. But then let's look up close

  471. and understand

  472. the particular metals

  473. so to speak.

  474. Now the specific parts

  475. of the vision

  476. are important too.

  477. What do they teach us

  478. about God?

  479. What do we see

  480. about him here?

  481. First

  482. notice his clothing.

  483. His clothing was white

  484. as snow.

  485. God is entirely

  486. pure

  487. completely

  488. righteous.

  489. What this means

  490. is that God

  491. doesn't make mistakes.

  492. He hasn't messed up.

  493. He didn't do wrong

  494. by you

  495. even though sometimes

  496. it may feel like it.

  497. What e'er my God

  498. ordains

  499. is right

  500. as the hymn writer says.

  501. Entirely pure

  502. and completely

  503. righteous.

  504. But his clothes

  505. aren't all that's white

  506. so is his hair.

  507. White hair

  508. as white

  509. and pure

  510. as lamb's wool.

  511. The passage tells us

  512. white hair

  513. is often used

  514. in these days

  515. and in ours

  516. to depict what?

  517. Wisdom.

  518. God is

  519. most

  520. wise.

  521. His hair

  522. is as white

  523. as lamb's wool

  524. a picture of something

  525. as pure and white

  526. as can be imagined.

  527. He is the most

  528. wise.

  529. Have you ever felt

  530. like you know

  531. better than God?

  532. I mean

  533. who's going to admit

  534. that in church

  535. really?

  536. I mean

  537. you wouldn't have said it

  538. yes somebody is.

  539. You wouldn't have said it

  540. that way

  541. perhaps

  542. but if you're like me

  543. you've thought before

  544. I know

  545. what God

  546. should do

  547. now.

  548. I see what

  549. he's up to

  550. and this is what

  551. he needs to do

  552. next.

  553. God

  554. this would be

  555. so good

  556. if you would

  557. just help

  558. this person.

  559. If you would

  560. just make this

  561. work this way

  562. that would be

  563. the best thing.

  564. It would make

  565. so much sense.

  566. And in my life

  567. at least

  568. that seems

  569. to be a guarantee

  570. for I've missed

  571. something.

  572. I've gotten

  573. caught up

  574. in my own

  575. plans

  576. and ideas

  577. and forgotten

  578. what was

  579. really

  580. best.

  581. Tim Keller

  582. says this

  583. God will

  584. either

  585. give us

  586. what we

  587. ask

  588. or give us

  589. what we

  590. would have

  591. asked

  592. if we knew

  593. everything

  594. God

  595. knows.

  596. Interesting.

  597. Either what we

  598. ask

  599. or what we

  600. would have

  601. asked

  602. if we knew

  603. everything

  604. God knows.

  605. He knows

  606. what is best

  607. because he

  608. is most

  609. wise.

  610. Next we see

  611. God is the

  612. powerful

  613. warrior.

  614. Look at the

  615. rest of

  616. verse 9.

  617. His throne

  618. was fiery

  619. flames.

  620. Its wheels

  621. were burning

  622. fire.

  623. A stream

  624. of fire

  625. issued and

  626. came out

  627. from before

  628. him.

  629. This is no

  630. normal throne.

  631. It's not

  632. just some

  633. tiny chair

  634. is it?

  635. This is a

  636. chariot.

  637. A war

  638. chariot

  639. with fire

  640. coming out

  641. with wheels

  642. on it.

  643. It pictures

  644. God as the

  645. mighty general

  646. ready to

  647. carry out

  648. justice

  649. and vengeance.

  650. patience.

  651. He's not

  652. some meek

  653. loving

  654. grandfather

  655. in the sky

  656. known only

  657. for his

  658. gentleness.

  659. No this

  660. is a

  661. powerful

  662. warrior

  663. with fire

  664. coming forth

  665. from his

  666. throne

  667. to consume.

  668. But maybe

  669. it's just

  670. a powerful

  671. guy just

  672. sitting there

  673. waiting to

  674. be told

  675. what he's

  676. allowed to

  677. do,

  678. where he

  679. can go

  680. in force.

  681. Maybe this

  682. is just

  683. the muscle

  684. with no

  685. real authority.

  686. Could that

  687. be?

  688. No way.

  689. Perhaps the

  690. clearest detail

  691. communicated in

  692. this vision

  693. of God

  694. is that God

  695. is the

  696. final judge,

  697. the ultimate

  698. authority.

  699. That's how it

  700. begins and

  701. ends with

  702. thrones placed

  703. in the

  704. ancient of

  705. days taking

  706. his seat on

  707. what we find

  708. out is the

  709. center throne

  710. from that

  711. picture in

  712. Revelation.

  713. The court

  714. sat in

  715. judgment and

  716. the books

  717. were opened.

  718. Who else

  719. needed to

  720. sit down

  721. before the

  722. court could

  723. start?

  724. Nobody.

  725. The judge

  726. has taken

  727. his seat

  728. and he's

  729. ready to

  730. start.

  731. The image

  732. is one of

  733. God as

  734. judge.

  735. He is the

  736. one who

  737. decides who

  738. is raised

  739. up and

  740. who is

  741. cast down.

  742. He is the

  743. one dispensing

  744. judgments on

  745. all of

  746. history.

  747. He is the

  748. one in

  749. whose

  750. righteous

  751. and wise

  752. hands is

  753. the authority

  754. for all

  755. decisions.

  756. In fact,

  757. that's immediately

  758. what happens

  759. in the next

  760. two verses

  761. after this

  762. vision.

  763. Without

  764. awaiting a

  765. jury vote,

  766. without a

  767. lot of

  768. fanfare,

  769. great human

  770. kings and

  771. kingdoms are

  772. dethroned and

  773. destroyed in

  774. an instant.

  775. Justice is

  776. served.

  777. The ancient

  778. of days is

  779. seated on the

  780. throne and

  781. there is no

  782. room for

  783. anyone else.

  784. An awesome

  785. vision of our

  786. glorious and

  787. mighty God.

  788. Last question

  789. this morning.

  790. When do we

  791. need this

  792. vision?

  793. Well, you

  794. said a vision

  795. of heaven would

  796. be practically

  797. helpful in the

  798. here and now.

  799. Would be

  800. something that

  801. would help

  802. me today.

  803. I mean, of

  804. course, it's

  805. always helpful to

  806. see God more

  807. clearly, but when

  808. do we especially

  809. need this

  810. vision?

  811. We could make

  812. up answers, but

  813. in what context

  814. does God give it

  815. to Daniel and

  816. the rest of his

  817. people?

  818. When does he

  819. think we need

  820. it?

  821. It's actually

  822. really interesting

  823. if you start at

  824. the beginning of

  825. Daniel 7, when

  826. the ancient of

  827. days shows up.

  828. Because the

  829. vision up to

  830. that point is

  831. actually not about

  832. heaven.

  833. All the way up to

  834. verse 9 where we

  835. started, the first

  836. eight verses are

  837. about the next few

  838. hundred years of

  839. human history after

  840. Daniel.

  841. They're about kings

  842. and kingdoms and

  843. wars and terrible

  844. things that are

  845. going on.

  846. And with no

  847. transition whatsoever,

  848. it shifts to the

  849. throne room of

  850. heaven.

  851. Look, this is the

  852. end of those first

  853. eight verses.

  854. I considered the

  855. horns on one of

  856. these beasts, one

  857. of these kings.

  858. There came up among

  859. them another horn, a

  860. little one, before

  861. which three of the

  862. first horns were

  863. plucked up by the

  864. roots.

  865. And behold, in this

  866. horn were eyes like

  867. the eyes of a man in

  868. a mouth, speaking

  869. great things.

  870. As I looked, thrones

  871. were placed in the

  872. ancient of days, took

  873. his seat.

  874. He shows up right

  875. there in the midst

  876. of it with no

  877. transition.

  878. It's as though your

  879. television set is

  880. sounding beep, beep,

  881. beep.

  882. We interrupt this

  883. current broadcast to

  884. give you breaking

  885. news of something

  886. else that's happening

  887. simultaneously somewhere

  888. else.

  889. Right in the midst of

  890. human history, of

  891. great conflict, of

  892. deep evil, another

  893. reality is true.

  894. And the camera just

  895. pans over to the

  896. ancient of days, seated

  897. on his throne, right

  898. in the midst of it.

  899. Let me read you just

  900. a sample of the

  901. setting that the

  902. vision comes in to

  903. help us see when we

  904. especially need it.

  905. Chapter 7, as I said,

  906. actually begins with a

  907. vision of kingdoms.

  908. And the vision is very

  909. similar to the one we

  910. talked about in

  911. chapter 2 when

  912. Nebuchadnezzar had a

  913. dream of a statue

  914. that was crushed, if you

  915. remember that.

  916. This vision and the

  917. one in chapter 8 that

  918. I'll reference here

  919. speak of the kingdoms

  920. of Babylon and Persia

  921. and Greece and

  922. Alexander the Great

  923. and Rome and so

  924. forth with some

  925. really amazingly

  926. accurate detail.

  927. But here's the

  928. situation.

  929. Look at some of the

  930. things going on.

  931. Daniel begins his

  932. vision.

  933. He sees a vision in

  934. there.

  935. Four winds of heaven

  936. stirring up the great

  937. sea and four great

  938. beasts come out of the

  939. great sea different

  940. from one another.

  941. The first a lion,

  942. with eagle's wings.

  943. The second a bear who's

  944. told, arise, devour

  945. much flesh.

  946. That's what that king

  947. does.

  948. And then there's another

  949. like a leopard who

  950. rises fast with four

  951. wings of a bird on its

  952. back and had four heads

  953. and dominion was given

  954. to this one, this

  955. powerful one.

  956. And then there's the

  957. fourth one.

  958. Terrifying and dreadful

  959. and exceedingly strong.

  960. Great iron teeth that

  961. devoured and broke in

  962. pieces and stamped what

  963. was left with its feet.

  964. A powerful but painful

  965. infliction on God's

  966. people and many others.

  967. Go to the next screen.

  968. Verse 21.

  969. As I looked, this horn

  970. that was on the last

  971. beast made war with the

  972. saints and prevailed over

  973. them.

  974. This fourth powerful beast

  975. that was terrifying and

  976. dreadful is prevailing over

  977. God's people.

  978. He shall speak words

  979. against God himself, the

  980. Most High, and shall wear

  981. out the saints of the

  982. Most High.

  983. Shall think to change the

  984. times and the law and

  985. they shall be given into

  986. his hand for a time, times

  987. and half a time.

  988. And Daniel sees all of

  989. this and what's happening

  990. to God's people and he

  991. says, as for me, Daniel,

  992. my thoughts greatly

  993. alarmed me and my color

  994. changed.

  995. He sees what's going to

  996. happen to God's people and

  997. it stresses him out.

  998. He's deeply anxious.

  999. We read in chapter 8 of

  1000. one of these rulers,

  1001. He shall make deceit

  1002. prosper under his hand

1003. and in his own mind he

  1004. shall become great.

  1005. Without warning he shall

  1006. destroy many and he

1007. shall even rise up against

1008. the prince of princes and

1009. he shall be broken but by

  1010. no human hand.

  1011. And Daniel's response at

1012. the end of that vision,

1013. I was overcome and lay

  1014. sick for some days.

  1015. What's the general

  1016. impression given by these

  1017. parts of the vision?

1018. What are our emotions when

  1019. we especially need this

  1020. vision of God?

  1021. Daniel feels it well,

  1022. doesn't he?

1023. When we feel like him,

  1024. greatly alarmed,

1025. overcome to the point of

1026. being sick for days as he

1027. sees the things that will

1028. happen to God's people or

1029. for us things that are

  1030. happening to God's people?

  1031. When we are overwhelmed,

1032. when the world around us

1033. seems to be spinning out

1034. of control and we become

1035. scared and when we feel

1036. helpless and when we grow

  1037. increasingly anxious,

1038. that's the general feel of

1039. what's going on when you

1040. read about wild beasts and

  1041. their terrifying power.

1042. It's how we ought to feel,

  1043. isn't it?

1044. And that's when God gives

  1045. the vision of himself.

1046. That's when we need this

1047. clear vision of God and of

  1048. our eternal home.

1049. Have you felt like that

  1050. lately?

  1051. Overwhelmed or out of

  1052. control, scared, helpless,

  1053. anxious?

  1054. And this vision is

  1055. especially for you.

  1056. But now close up,

  1057. specifically what situations

1058. does God give this vision

  1059. for?

  1060. Here's a few particulars from

  1061. these verses here in

  1062. Daniel.

  1063. First, when injustice

  1064. rages, when human

  1065. rulers war and fight,

1066. when human power is used to

  1067. harm, not help,

  1068. when God's enemies have

  1069. exhausted God's people,

  1070. when God's people have

  1071. wandered after idols.

1072. Those are the things going

1073. on on the news when the

1074. camera pans over to the

  1075. breaking news that the

1076. ancient of days is on his

  1077. throne.

1078. And God says that's not all

  1079. that's true.

1080. That may be what's in the

  1081. news, but there's something

  1082. else.

  1083. A righteous, wise, powerful,

1084. just judge on the throne

  1085. over it all.

1086. And he gives you that picture

1087. in order to bring true

  1088. comfort to you.

  1089. When injustice rages,

1090. things that drive us crazy

1091. and we can't seem to fix

1092. them for ourselves or for

1093. others that are being taken

1094. advantage of, we need to see

1095. the eternally just judge and

1096. know that he will do right in

1097. his time in a way we can trust

  1098. even to death.

1099. When human rulers war and

1100. fight and seek power and

1101. everything seems to hang in the

1102. balance of how this plays

1103. out, we need to see the

1104. ancient of days who is on his

1105. throne long before the beast

1106. took theirs and remains on his

1107. throne well after the last one

  1108. is declawed.

1109. And we need to know that our

1110. ultimate home is there with our

  1111. father.

1112. There where we will find true

  1113. safety and true rest.

1114. When human power is used to harm

1115. not help, we need to see the one

1116. who is gracious with his power and

  1117. righteously protects the oppressed.

1118. When God's enemies have exhausted

1119. God's people so that we feel that the

1120. wicked prosper and the righteous

1121. perish and we can't stand before it any

1122. longer, we need to see the eternal

1123. victor who destroys those great

1124. beasts with a flick of his wrist.

1125. Who breaks their power, Daniel 8.25

  1126. with no human hand.

1127. Second time we've seen that one in

  1128. Daniel, isn't it?

1129. That rock from chapter 2 that was

1130. hewn with no human hand.

1131. The divine Savior who crushes the

1132. kingdoms and becomes a rock that

  1133. fills the whole earth.

1134. We need to see that Savior so that his

  1135. people finally see justice.

1136. And when God's people have wandered

1137. after idols and allowed other things

1138. that won't last or fulfill us to

1139. distract us from what's truly valuable,

1140. we need to see the all-glorious,

1141. ultimately worthy God who fights for us

1142. and knows what's best for us and is worthy of

1143. all of our praise and all of our attention

  1144. and time and zeal.

1145. Do you see him there this morning?

1146. Do you know that reality is true alongside

1147. and above the reality that you are facing?

1148. Do you know that the ancient of days has never

1149. left the throne Daniel saw him on?

1150. Do you know that he's there right now

1151. just the way he was described in Daniel 7?

1152. One more look because he is there now

1153. and this is true for you today.

1154. As I looked, thrones were placed

1155. and the ancient of days took his seat.

1156. His clothing was white as snow

1157. and the hair of his head like pure wool.

1158. His throne was fiery flames.

1159. Its wheels were burning fire.

1160. A stream of fire issued and came out from before him.

1161. A thousand thousand served him

1162. and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him.

1163. The court sat in judgment

1164. and the books were opened.

  1165. Pray with me.

1166. Our great God, King of all kings,

1167. supreme judge over all judges,

1168. we this morning join the multitude

  1169. surrounding that throne

  1170. and bowing before you

1171. because we are not worthy.

1172. And in proclaiming that you are worthy

1173. and the honor and the glory and the power is yours,

1174. Father, would you comfort us

1175. with the reminder of your presence on the throne

1176. that the just judge is on the throne

1177. and he is also our good Father.

1178. Father, we need that reminder today

1179. when we would be so prone

1180. to put ourselves on the throne

1181. or to feel the throne is unoccupied.

  1182. It's not.

1183. Give us that clear vision

1184. that we may know where we're headed

1185. and know where we already are

  1186. in heaven with you.

1187. We ask it in Jesus' name.

  1188. Amen.

  1189. Amen.

  1190. Amen.
