  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. Turn with me this morning to Luke chapter 4.

    Luke 4 chapter mention

  5. Luke 4.

  6. We have seen recently in Luke's gospel, Jesus as the promised Messiah, the beloved Son of

  7. God.

  8. Seen Him confirmed in that identity through His faithful obedience and temptation, right?

  9. As He succeeded in the wilderness and the places that we have failed.

  10. Ron did such a great job with that, walking us through that.

  11. This morning we look at a passage where Jesus lays out His plan for public ministry.

  12. He gives the blueprint for kingdom ministry, you could say.

  13. This is what I'm going to do as the anointed deliverer, moving the kingdom of God forward.

  14. Here's what it's going to look like.

  15. It's a really helpful outline and list of priorities that the gospel story bears out.

  16. We're going to see themes we talk about this morning time and time again through the gospel

  17. of Luke.

  18. Luke.

  19. And Jesus sticks to His promises in His ministry as Luke 4 becomes a consistent pattern for

  20. Jesus.

  21. And of course then for His church as well.

  22. What does kingdom ministry look like for us?

  23. If we're to be His followers, then our role is to see His kingdom advanced.

  24. And He's the one who shows us and tells us what that's going to look like, right?

  25. What things should characterize the ministry of Southwood Presbyterian Church?

  26. What things should characterize the lives of her members?

  27. That sounds easy and exciting, right?

  28. What's it all going to be like?

  29. Tell us the plan.

  30. Let's go.

  31. Well, listen as we read because some of the people who first heard the plan were excited

  32. too.

  33. By the end of the day though, they wanted to kill Jesus rather than follow His plan.

  34. Read with me this remarkable day, Luke 4 at verse 14.

  35. This is God's holy word.

  36. And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit to Galilee and a report about Him went through

  37. all the surrounding country.

  38. And He taught in their synagogues being glorified by all.

  39. And He came to Nazareth where He had been brought up and as was His custom, He went to the synagogue

  40. on the Sabbath day and He stood up to read.

  41. And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was given to Him.

  42. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,

  43. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me because He has anointed me to proclaim good news to

  44. the poor.

  45. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind,

  46. to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.

  47. And He rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down.

  48. And the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on Him.

  49. And He began to say to them,

  50. Today, this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.

  51. And all spoke well of Him and marveled at the gracious words that were coming from His mouth.

  52. And they said,

  53. Is not this Joseph's son?

  54. And He said to them,

  55. Doubtless you will quote to me this proverb,

  56. Physician, heal yourself.

  57. What we have heard you did at Capernaum, do here in your hometown as well.

  58. And He said,

  59. Truly I say to you,

  60. No prophet is acceptable in his hometown.

  61. But in truth,

  62. I tell you there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah

  63. when the heavens were shut up three years and six months

  64. and a great famine came over all the land.

  65. And Elijah was sent to none of them,

  66. but only to Zarephath in the land of Sidon,

  67. to a woman who was a widow.

  68. And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of the prophet Elisha.

  69. And none of them was cleansed,

  70. but only Naaman the Syrian.

  71. When they heard these things,

  72. all in the synagogue were filled with wrath.

  73. And they rose up and drove him out of the town

  74. and brought him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built,

  75. so that they could throw him down the cliff.

  76. But passing through their midst,

  77. he went away.

  78. Thus far, God's holy word.

  79. Let's pray and ask for His help.

  80. Father, that is our heart.

  81. That is the posture in which we come to Your word,

  82. needing Your help.

  83. We don't just need help to understand the words

  84. and to make sense of them.

  85. We need Your help, Holy Spirit.

  86. That they might have their intended impact on our hearts.

  87. That they might show us our sin.

  88. That they might show us our Savior.

  89. That we might see and hope in Him.

  90. That we might be changed as a result of meeting with You.

  91. Holy Spirit, speak.

  92. Would You speak even through one such as me,

  93. who wrestles and struggles with this passage,

  94. perhaps more than anyone else in the room.

  95. Would You use me to speak?

  96. Would You speak to me by Your Spirit

  97. and also through me,

  98. that we might hear Your voice.

  99. That's our need,

  100. to hear from You.

  101. And so we ask it in Jesus' name.

  102. Amen.

  103. So Jesus begins His public ministry here,

  104. traveling around to different towns.

  105. And regularly when He gets there,

  106. He's teaching, right?

  107. Particularly His habit is going to the synagogue on the Sabbath day.

  108. That's where you find Jesus.

  109. He's showing up to teach.

  110. So many sermons,

  111. Luke doesn't record all of them,

  112. but He gives us one particular account here from Nazareth,

  113. Jesus' hometown.

  114. So this first sermon kind of sets the agenda,

  115. is the blueprint,

  116. His priorities for His ministry,

  117. how God's kingdom is going to come.

  118. There are priorities that are to be hopeful and exciting,

  119. just as we've been promised already in the Gospel of Luke.

  120. There's good stuff coming.

  121. Jesus says,

  122. here's the message,

  123. the time has come.

  124. What you've been waiting for,

  125. those last days you've heard promised

  126. through the Old Testament Scriptures,

  127. they're here.

  128. Salvation is coming,

  129. now,

  130. through me.

  131. That's what He's declaring.

  132. It's really exciting, right?

  133. What they've all been waiting for.

  134. Don't forget these priorities as we go through Luke,

  135. because this is the paradigm that Jesus is setting up.

  136. Priorities for kingdom ministry.

  137. First,

  138. the ministry of His kingdom begins,

  139. and ends,

  140. with a Christ-centered focus.

  141. Look what He selects from the prophet Isaiah,

  142. verse 18.

  143. He opens to Isaiah 61,

  144. and says,

  145. the Spirit of the Lord is upon me,

  146. because He has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.

  147. He sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives,

  148. and recovering of sight to the blind,

  149. to set at liberty those who are oppressed,

  150. to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.

  151. And Jesus reads that,

  152. and then He rolls up the scroll that He's been given.

  153. He gives it back to the synagogue leader,

  154. as He would every week.

  155. And then this is what happens.

  156. In these synagogues,

  157. you stand for the reading of God's Word,

  158. and then you sit down to give the sermon.

  159. I'm not going to put that into practice this morning.

  160. You might feel a little awkward.

  161. But you sit down to preach.

  162. So that's what Jesus does.

  163. And everyone's looking to Him.

  164. What's He going to say now?

  165. And He began this way,

  166. today,

  167. this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.

  168. Notice what He's saying in the passage that He selected from Isaiah.

  169. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me.

  170. He has anointed me.

  171. He has sent me

  172. to do all of these things.

  173. And Jesus, having read that,

  174. says,

  175. today,

  176. this Scripture about me,

  177. fulfilled in your hearing.

  178. That's where the kingdom begins, right?

  179. The anointed one,

  180. the promised Messiah,

  181. the King has come.

  182. And the ministry of the kingdom

  183. never goes forward apart from the King.

  184. That sounds obvious, right?

  185. Well, that was really profound.

  186. But we can never lose sight of that.

  187. Churches can do lots of things.

  188. We can have a lot of fun doing a lot of things.

  189. But if we're not about the worship of King Jesus,

  190. the proclamation of King Jesus,

  191. the demonstration of the impact of King Jesus on our lives and our world,

  192. then it's not kingdom ministry that we're doing.

  193. You can't have the kingdom without the King.

  194. He sets the agenda.

  195. He provides the grace.

  196. He gets the glory.

  197. And no one else.

  198. Everything we do and say corporately must point to Him,

  199. not the preacher.

  200. Everything we do and say individually must point to Him,

  201. not the church member.

  202. We live in His strength rather than our own

  203. and for His glory rather than our own.

  204. Secondly, the ministry of the kingdom features both word and deed.

  205. Constantly, the kingdom has a message to proclaim

  206. and an impact to make.

  207. It sounds like something and it feels like something.

  208. Maybe the most obvious parallel is in the descriptions in verse 18.

  209. You'll see right there Jesus has been sent to proclaim liberty

  210. and then later to provide liberty, to set at liberty.

  211. He is both announcing it and bringing it.

  212. He's announcing that there's good news

  213. and He's actually bringing it into existence to reality.

  214. The word aspect of the kingdom,

  215. constantly present as Jesus, as He is here,

  216. preaches and teaches,

  217. calls to repentance,

  218. offers eternal hope,

  219. proclaims the good news of salvation.

  220. And the deeds accompany the words.

  221. He actually cures sick people

  222. while promising healing.

  223. He actually feeds hungry people

  224. while proclaiming Himself as the bread of life.

  225. He actually eats with the poor and the oppressed

  226. while teaching love for a neighbor, right?

  227. Do you see the priority of word and deed together?

  228. There's a message to proclaim here.

  229. Good news, the King is here.

  230. Forgiveness for the worst sinner.

  231. Freedom for those in bondage.

  232. Jubilee for the biggest debtors.

  233. That's a strange word, right?

  234. Jubilee, where'd you get that?

  235. That's what the hearers in that Jewish synagogue

  236. would have heard when Jesus read

  237. the year of the Lord's favor

  238. at the end of verse 19.

  239. Jubilee, right?

  240. Every 50 years, debts forgiven.

  241. Slave set free.

  242. Land returned to the owner.

  243. All of those things happening

  244. because the message must be accompanied

  245. by an experience of the same thing.

  246. A foretaste of glory.

  247. Let me say it this way.

  248. Forgiveness as the message

  249. can feel like a friend or a family member

  250. who finds you in shame and hiding

  251. and patiently accepts you

  252. and stays with you even in the midst of your struggle.

  253. Forgiveness can feel like that.

  254. Freedom can feel like societal systems

  255. that treat you equally

  256. regardless of your race or your background.

  257. Jubilee as the message can feel

  258. like communities who welcome a refugee

  259. or an outsider

  260. and help him find a place to fit in.

  261. Hearing about King Jesus

  262. and experiencing the reality of King Jesus

  263. must go together.

  264. Think about the priority of word and deed

  265. together in terms of marriage reconciliation.

  266. We know that this would be true.

  267. It's a good picture of it for us.

  268. Imagine Billy and Sally are married

  269. and Billy has an affair

  270. and Sally finds out.

  271. But they want to work things out.

  272. And so the message Billy needs to communicate

  273. is love.

  274. Right?

  275. But we know talk is cheap.

  276. That's what we say.

  277. If Billy just begins to say 30 times a day,

  278. I love you, I love you, I love you.

  279. But nothing ever changes in the way he acts.

  280. He's doing all of the same things

  281. that he has been doing.

  282. His words, the message won't be believed, will it?

  283. It'll fall on deaf ears.

  284. But the opposite is true too.

  285. If Billy starts washing the dishes all the time,

  286. even when they're not dirty,

  287. and he starts doing everything that Sally wants

  288. and trying to be this perfect husband,

  289. and yet he still spews hatred towards her

  290. and says hateful things all of the time,

  291. it won't work.

  292. The deeds will fall flat.

  293. They'll seem fake.

  294. In fact, even if he's just silent

  295. and never once says,

  296. I love you,

  297. she'll start to wonder about the message

  298. all these kind deeds are communicating,

  299. won't she?

  300. If she says to him,

  301. I love you,

  302. and his response is to ignore it

  303. or just to smile and carry on,

  304. she's going to begin to wonder,

  305. what's this game?

  306. What's he up to with all these things he's doing?

  307. He won't even tell me that he loves me.

  308. If the message is love,

  309. word and deed must go together.

  310. You can't neglect either.

  311. In Jesus' kingdom,

  312. it's always word and deed.

  313. We're going to see that

  314. throughout the Gospel of Luke.

  315. So one last priority of kingdom ministry

  316. here in this passage.

  317. It runs graciously toward the needy

  318. to provide help.

  319. Whether it's words or deeds,

  320. who's the object of all of these things

  321. that Jesus is doing in his ministry

  322. here in this passage?

  323. Look at verse 18 again.

  324. Who is it that's going to receive

  325. all of the things Jesus is doing?

  326. Proclaim good news to the poor.

  327. Proclaim liberty to the captives.

  328. Recovering of sight to the blind.

  329. Set at liberty,

  330. those who are oppressed.

  331. The poor,

  332. the captives,

  333. the blind,

  334. the oppressed.

  335. Later in the conversation,

  336. he'll use examples of a hungry widow,

  337. a desperate leper.

  338. This is the reality of the jubilee

  339. Jesus is proclaiming.

  340. The playing field is leveled,

  341. right?

  342. It's reset.

  343. It's another evidence

  344. of what we've been talking about

  345. as the theme of Luke.

  346. Good news of great joy for whom?

  347. For all people.

  348. And that's exciting, right?

  349. Hopefully you feel a little bit

  350. of what Jesus' audience

  351. apparently felt when they heard it.

  352. Awesome!

  353. The Messiah is here.

  354. Good things are happening.

  355. Needs are being met.

  356. This sounds great.

  357. Good news for all sorts of people.

  358. I'm so excited, Jesus.

  359. They all responded that way.

  360. But apparently,

  361. this is also the tipping point

  362. for the Jews in the synagogue.

  363. They're riding high, right?

  364. Excitement is palpable in the pews.

  365. I'm sure they had pews in the synagogue.

  366. In fact,

  367. the guy behind all of this

  368. is Joseph's son, right?

  369. This is our guy.

  370. We know him.

  371. He grew up here.

  372. All of a sudden,

  373. here's our hometown hero.

  374. We're gonna be on the inside.

  375. You used to say,

  376. what good could possibly come from Nazareth?

  377. You won't say that anymore.

  378. The guy we've all been waiting for,

  379. he's our guy.

  380. We're gonna be connected.

  381. This is our big chance.

  382. They're so excited.

  383. He's got them right there.

  384. He could say anything he wanted.

  385. They'd do anything he asks.

  386. And all I can think is,

  387. Jesus must have passed

  388. the magical 30-minute mark

  389. in his sermon,

  390. and they all just turned against him.

  391. Like,

  392. that's not what happened.

  393. It's actually something

  394. much more intentional

  395. in Jesus' words,

  396. because he senses

  397. this opportunistic desire

  398. from the crowd.

  399. He can tell they're thinking,

  400. yes,

  401. good news of great joy

  402. for all of us.

  403. All of us who've been waiting.

  404. We've been promised

  405. that there was something exciting coming.

  406. That's what we've been waiting for,

  407. Jesus.

  408. And he says,

  409. you need to understand,

  410. I mean all people.

  411. Gentile dogs,

  412. as you call them.

  413. Outsiders.

  414. I'm not here to fulfill Scripture

  415. only in Nazareth,

  416. but all over,

  417. and you won't like me for it,

  418. he says.

  419. Let me make sure you're hearing me.

  420. Like the prophet Elijah

  421. bringing the kingdom

  422. to the Gentile widow.

  423. Like the prophet Elisha

  424. bringing the kingdom

  425. to the Gentile leper.

  426. I'm here to run toward

  427. those kind of needy outsiders.

  428. And it sends them over the edge,

  429. doesn't it?

  430. They can't take it.

  431. When Jesus runs graciously

  432. toward needy outsiders,

  433. some who want to be insiders

  434. feel left out.

  435. They're so outraged, in fact,

  436. at this priority of Jesus' kingdom

  437. that they go from cheering him

  438. to chasing him out of town

  439. in order to kill him.

  440. You see, these Jews lived

  441. in a culture of a hierarchical

  442. social order.

  443. Some people were in,

  444. others were out.

  445. Even in the synagogue

  446. where they're sitting

  447. listening to Jesus,

  448. where you sat in the synagogue

  449. was determined

  450. based on your gender,

  451. your birth,

  452. the qualifications

  453. that you had achieved

  454. in your life.

  455. This structure of society

  456. and your social rank

  457. determined where you sat to eat,

  458. to whom you spoke

  459. or didn't speak,

  460. what kind of work you did

  461. or didn't do.

  462. This is the world

  463. in which they lived.

  464. And they,

  465. those listening to Jesus,

  466. they were the religious insiders,

  467. weren't they?

  468. They were there in the synagogue

  469. and that religious insider status

  470. must be maintained.

  471. So they'd been rejoicing, right?

  472. After all these years,

  473. I'm finally getting

  474. what has been coming to me.

  475. And they are finally getting

  476. what has been coming to them.

  477. And then they realized

  478. it was all social outsiders

  479. that Jesus mentioned

  480. coming to bless.

  481. And it wasn't just an accident,

  482. He really meant it.

  483. It was no accident

  484. that Jesus left out

  485. that verse at the end

  486. in Isaiah 61

  487. to proclaim the year

  488. of the Lord's favor

  489. and they know what was next

  490. and the day of vengeance

  491. of our God.

  492. The Jews were ready

  493. for all the outsiders

  494. to get what was coming to them

  495. that day of vengeance.

  496. And Jesus says,

  497. that day is coming,

  498. but not yet.

  499. First, I'm running with grace

  500. towards them.

  501. And the Jews can't stand it.

  502. They're outraged.

  503. They run Him towards a cliff

  504. in order to kill Him.

  505. When I first read this passage,

  506. I thought to myself,

  507. oh, that's good

  508. because I don't struggle with that.

  509. And neither does Southwood.

  510. We love God's grace.

  511. We love to see Him work.

  512. We love needy people

  513. to hear and feel

  514. the reality of the kingdom.

  515. Of course,

  516. we would never begrudge

  517. the kingdom moving

  518. somewhere over there,

  519. would we?

  520. But I love to be an insider.

  521. I love to get special treatment,

  522. even if it's free food

  523. at a football game.

  524. It makes me feel special

  525. and important.

  526. And most of us

  527. are like the people

  528. in the synagogue,

  529. religious insiders.

  530. We were either born that way

  531. or we've become that way.

  532. How do we as insiders

  533. struggle with the priorities

  534. of kingdom ministry

  535. when Jesus runs graciously

  536. toward needy outsiders

  537. and we feel left out?

  538. How does that happen

  539. in our hearts?

  540. Does it?

  541. Often in my heart,

  542. it's comparison.

  543. Here's one example

  544. from your pastor

  545. that I struggled with this week.

  546. I noticed kingdom ministry

  547. happening somewhere else.

  548. Even at another church in town,

  549. people flocking there

  550. and baptisms all over the place

  551. and the spirit seems to be moving

  552. and I say,

  553. man, I don't feel excited about that.

  554. Instead of rejoicing,

  555. I'm resentful

  556. because you see,

  557. they have bad theology

  558. and I have good theology.

  559. God, why are you blessing them

  560. with all their bad theology

  561. when I've got better training

  562. and better understanding

  563. of your word?

  564. All of a sudden,

  565. I'm not happy

  566. Jesus is being praised

  567. over there

  568. because I'm not.

  569. And God says,

  570. oh, by the way,

  571. did you want to talk

  572. about theology?

  573. Because your idea

  574. that my spirit works

  575. only in places

  576. with more accurate theology,

  577. there's maybe the first bit

  578. of bad theology you have.

  579. Maybe your theology

  580. is not so good

  581. as you thought it was.

  582. I think in comparison

  583. to someone else,

  584. I deserve more from God

  585. and I don't.

  586. And I resent Him for that.

  587. So did the Jews

  588. with the Gentiles.

  589. Imagine, ladies,

  590. that girl you competed with

  591. all through high school.

  592. Academically,

  593. athletically,

  594. socially,

  595. you know who I'm talking about.

  596. Y'all were always rivals

  597. and competing for things.

  598. But she was a mean girl

  599. and you were the moral girl.

  600. You always had that on her.

  601. She did things

  602. you never would have spoken of

  603. and you stayed clean.

  604. In fact,

  605. she edged you out

  606. for valedictorian

  607. because she did some bonus work

  608. while you were on a mission trip.

  609. It's terrible.

  610. You've always kind of

  611. held that against her.

  612. But then someone at your church

  613. took the idea seriously

  614. of going and sharing Jesus

  615. with everyone,

  616. especially outsiders.

  617. And they talked to her

  618. and she met Jesus.

  619. And she came to your church

  620. and everybody got so excited

  621. about her.

  622. Like it was such a big deal.

  623. In fact,

  624. when she came to Jesus,

  625. part of that process

  626. was watching God

  627. heal her mom of cancer.

  628. And you lost your mom

  629. to cancer.

  630. Even though you prayed.

  631. Way more.

  632. Not fair, God.

  633. If you're not frustrated yet,

  634. she has a fourth grade daughter

  635. just like you do.

  636. And when she and all of her other

  637. unchurched friends

  638. came to heyday,

  639. they took all the candy

  640. so your kid didn't get

  641. to go home with any.

  642. But you were actually okay with that

  643. because not a big deal.

  644. Their health,

  645. you know,

  646. kids are going to be healthy

  647. so they didn't really need the candy.

  648. But what's worse is

  649. she came to their Sunday school class

  650. and now your daughter's coming home

  651. from church complaining

  652. because she's lonely.

  653. And the other girl

  654. has taken all her friends.

  655. And you're outraged.

  656. God, this was my church.

  657. I prayed more.

  658. I've served longer.

  659. I deserve.

  660. I ought.

  661. It's there in our hearts too,

  662. isn't it?

  663. When we see ourselves

  664. compared to others

  665. and we think we deserve

  666. something more than they do.

  667. It shows up not only in comparison

  668. but in my consumerism.

  669. It's what the Jews say

  670. when they're saying,

  671. physician, heal yourself.

  672. Jesus, do miracles.

  673. Heal people here.

  674. We want our issues handled.

  675. Defeat the Gentiles ruling over us.

  676. Don't rescue them.

  677. You're supposed to be conquering them.

  678. It's about us.

  679. And we today are so trained

  680. to be consumers, right?

  681. Constantly evaluating

  682. what I'm getting out of

  683. wherever I spend my time

  684. and my energy

  685. and my resources.

  686. And so naturally,

  687. I do that at church.

  688. Church becomes about

  689. getting my desires fulfilled,

  690. my needs met,

  691. and becomes about complaining

  692. or leaving when I don't.

  693. And we've already violated

  694. the first priority of the kingdom.

  695. That it has a Christ-centered focus.

  696. That it's about Jesus,

  697. not about me.

  698. My questions need to change.

  699. It's no longer,

  700. do I like how this sounds

  701. or how that is organized?

  702. But rather,

  703. does it glorify Jesus?

  704. Does it exalt His name?

  705. Does it advance His kingdom

  706. in someone's life?

  707. And if so, I rejoice

  708. because it's about Him.

  709. One more way I have this struggle

  710. is in regards to community.

  711. There's a reality about community

  712. and the family of God

  713. that Peter has actually

  714. helped me learn a lot about

  715. in the past few weeks

  716. and understand better.

  717. And the reality of that community

  718. is that when someone comes

  719. into a community,

  720. when an outsider comes in,

  721. that existing family

  722. changes its shape.

  723. Right?

  724. It's no longer the same.

  725. The Jews wanted no part

  726. of these uncircumcised

  727. lower class Gentiles

  728. getting worked into their community.

  729. Think of the analogy

  730. with adopting a new child

  731. into your family.

  732. Some family principles

  733. and practices

  734. may stay the same, right?

  735. But you may now have bunk beds

  736. in your room

  737. and you may not get your own room.

  738. The family may not be able

  739. to do some things

  740. or go some places

  741. in the same way

  742. because it's grown

  743. and the shape of the family

  744. has changed.

  745. You may have to share the remote.

  746. You may have to do some things

  747. that are important

  748. to your new brother

  749. and are part of his background

  750. and his experiences.

  751. And that can be hard.

  752. And it can be beautiful.

  753. I can hear the words

  754. coming out of my own mouth.

  755. Oh, small group is just

  756. so much harder

  757. now that they come.

  758. You may have said,

  759. my church just doesn't look

  760. or smell

  761. or sound the same anymore.

  762. It's too big.

  763. It's too small.

  764. It's too young.

  765. It's too old.

  766. Think back to the mean girl

  767. who met Jesus.

  768. Imagine that she was living

  769. out of town,

  770. nowhere near you

  771. and you read on Facebook

  772. that she'd met Jesus.

  773. You might genuinely rejoice, right?

  774. You love that God works that way.

  775. That He runs graciously

  776. towards needy outsiders.

  777. That He loves them

  778. until she shows up in your church.

  779. That's where the rub is, isn't it?

  780. Until she shows up there

  781. and the shape of your family changes.

  782. It can be hard.

  783. And it can be beautiful.

  784. Don't you love older people?

  785. That God has graciously run

  786. toward crazy young people

  787. in the next generation

  788. who don't think like you do

  789. or look like you do

  790. and He's brought them

  791. into your family

  792. here at Southwood?

  793. Don't you love that?

  794. I know that you do.

  795. Even though it's disruptive

  796. to you sometimes,

  797. I know you love it

  798. because you tell me you love it.

  799. You love seeing God do that.

  800. Even if things change

  801. and the shape of your family

  802. looks different,

  803. you rejoice.

  804. You see the beauty in that.

  805. because y'all have learned

  806. what we struggle to learn.

  807. Wouldn't it be beautiful, Southwood,

  808. if God brought so many new members here

  809. that we had a budget crisis

  810. because the new members coming

  811. were those who needed

  812. financial assistance

  813. rather than those giving

  814. financial assistance?

  815. Wouldn't it be beautiful

  816. if we started singing different songs

  817. because they kept being suggested

  818. by all the new members

  819. who'd come from different

  820. ethnic backgrounds?

  821. Wouldn't that be beautiful?

  822. Southwood Kingdom Ministry

  823. that focuses on Jesus

  824. constantly follows Him

  825. in sharing and showing the kingdom

  826. to those who are outside

  827. and different from us.

  828. It must be absolutely

  829. and exclusively focused on Jesus

  830. and so it must be

  831. intentionally inclusive

  832. of the outsiders

  833. for whom King Jesus has come.

  834. who else needs to be in

  835. here?

  836. In your home?

  837. In your life?

  838. And then maybe even later

  839. in these pews?

  840. Think this morning of a person

  841. or group of people.

  842. How will you welcome them in?

  843. How will they experience

  844. the welcome of King Jesus

  845. in relationship with you?

  846. All of that.

  847. All these outsiders

  848. being welcomed in

  849. would be beautiful

  850. but perhaps hard

  851. for our hearts.

  852. That's the scary reality

  853. of this passage.

  854. We can't avoid it.

  855. How quickly they seek

  856. to get rid of Jesus.

  857. Verse 28.

  858. They heard all these things.

  859. All in the synagogue

  860. were filled with wrath.

  861. They rose up

  862. and drove him out of the town

  863. and brought him

  864. to the brow of the hill

  865. on which their town was built

  866. so they could throw him

  867. down the cliff

  868. but passing through their midst

  869. he went away.

  870. They had him there.

  871. Jesus do all these amazing things.

  872. We're so excited.

  873. Here's the big moment

  874. and they chase him out

  875. to kill him

  876. and he walks away.

  877. We are tempted

  878. to get rid of Jesus

  879. to maintain

  880. our preferred status quo.

  881. That's scary, isn't it?

  882. We're capable of that

  883. just as they were.

  884. And we may not

  885. throw him off a cliff

  886. and stone him

  887. as a false prophet

  888. but we might ignore

  889. his commands

  890. for my life.

  891. We might rationalize away

  892. his agenda

  893. for his church

  894. when it doesn't suit ours

  895. or doesn't seem comfortable to us.

  896. We may do whatever it takes

  897. to stay comfortable

  898. on the inside.

  899. Even keeping Jesus

  900. at arm's length.

  901. Oh, I would never do that.

  902. Even keeping Jesus

  903. at arm's length

  904. possibly because

  905. we so want to be comfortable

  906. on the inside.

  907. God, may it never be here

  908. that we would pursue

  909. our agenda

  910. and our glory

  911. and practically

  912. get rid of Jesus.

  913. Might we more and more

  914. share the heart

  915. of Jesus?

  916. You see,

  917. the beauty of Jesus' kingdom

  918. is its inclusive

  919. exclusivism.

  920. It's a phrase

  921. I'm borrowing

  922. from my friend

  923. Dane Ortlund.

  924. Let me explain briefly

  925. as we close.

  926. Our world,

  927. the culture in which we live

  928. is inclusive.

  929. Living under an ethic

  930. of tolerance

  931. where everyone

  932. and everything

  933. is in.

  934. Unless, of course,

  935. you believe

  936. that there's right

  937. and wrong

  938. or things that should

  939. or shouldn't happen

  940. and then

  941. there might be

  942. an outsider.

  943. So the inclusion

  944. is actually rather empty,

  945. isn't it?

  946. Religion,

  947. on the other hand,

  948. is exclusive.

  949. Because only the initiated

  950. or those who measure up

  951. or meet all the requirements

  952. and perform well enough

  953. are in

  954. and everyone else

  955. is out.

  956. Jesus is entirely different

  957. from either of those.

  958. It's an inclusive

  959. exclusivism.

  960. He as always unites

  961. word and deed.

  962. He doesn't merely

  963. talk about salvation.

  964. He actually achieves it.

  965. He meets all the requirements

  966. to be in

  967. and then He's treated

  968. as one who doesn't

  969. and is left out.

  970. When He goes to the cross

  971. in our place

  972. where we deserve

  973. ultimate rejection,

  974. He is left out

  975. away from the Father

  976. so that we can be welcomed in

  977. with all our debts paid,

  978. all our sins forgiven.

  979. That's what He does for us, right?

  980. That's inclusive exclusivism.

  981. We are in

  982. only through Jesus.

  983. And Jesus graciously invites

  984. all to come in

  985. through Him.

  986. You don't have to measure up.

  987. He's done that.

  988. You don't have to get it right.

  989. He has done that.

  990. All can come in

  991. because of Him.

  992. Lifelong outsiders,

  993. those who long to be insiders,

  994. all are welcomed

  995. into His family

  996. because of Him.

  997. May we rejoice

  998. in that gracious welcome.

  999. May we extend it

  1000. to many others.

1001. Pray with me to that end.

  1002. Father, that's

  1003. Your heart.

  1004. So often it's not

  1005. ours.

1006. Thank You for being a God

  1007. who consistently

  1008. and in

  1009. book after book

  1010. and page after page

  1011. and story after story

  1012. chases graciously

  1013. after those

  1014. who are far away,

  1015. who don't deserve

  1016. His love.

  1017. Because if You weren't

  1018. like that,

1019. none of us would know You.

  1020. Thank You.

  1021. Father, may it not

  1022. stop there.

  1023. May Your grace

1024. that You have poured out

  1025. on us

  1026. overflow

  1027. to many.

  1028. May we never begrudge

  1029. Your generosity,

  1030. but may we rejoice

  1031. in getting to share

  1032. with others

  1033. what You have shared

  1034. with us.

1035. Do it in our hearts

  1036. this morning.

  1037. Make it change

  1038. the way we approach

  1039. this afternoon

  1040. and every day

1041. for the rest of our lives.

1042. We ask that You would

  1043. do that work

  1044. for Your glory.

1045. We ask it in Jesus' name.

  1046. Amen.
