  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. Amen. That's the story we talk about every week, isn't it?

  4. The story that never can get old to us of that Savior that God has sent,

  5. of what He's done, of how it impacts us. We're going to talk about it again this morning.

  6. We're back in Luke 4 today.

  7. Next week we will take a break briefly from Luke to talk about what God's Word has to say

  8. about some significant events coming up soon in the life of our country.

  9. So you'll not want to miss that, or maybe you will, one way or the other.

  10. But last week in Luke 4 we heard Jesus lay out the blueprint for His kingdom ministry.

  11. It's what Ron was just talking about as he's led us through the service this morning.

  12. Jesus coming to bring freedom, to bring release, to proclaim it, and to provide it.

  13. Word and deed together in His ministry.

  14. Last week Jesus was preaching in the synagogue and the focus was on the words that He was proclaiming.

  15. This week we begin to see some of the deeds, some of the reality of that, the demonstration of the kingdom.

  16. We can talk and Jesus can say, this is what I'm coming to do and this is why I was sent.

  17. And now Jesus starts to show us.

  18. We start to see what it looks like and what it feels like when the King shows up.

  19. Glimpses and tastes of freedom and release.

  20. What happens when Jesus the King begins to move.

  21. I'm going to read beginning in verse 31 of Luke chapter 4.

    Luke 4 chapter mention

  22. Notice as I do that most of this story happens in one day.

  23. There's a lot that happens.

  24. But honestly it's just another normal Sabbath day in many ways.

  25. Perhaps like your day today.

  26. Jesus goes to church in the morning.

  27. He has lunch at a friend's house.

  28. And then by evening some more people show up and come over to hang out.

  29. But a seemingly normal day is anything but normal when Jesus is involved.

  30. Into the mundane normalcy of life here, Jesus brings the power of the kingdom.

  31. Follow this story as I read at verse 31 of Luke 4.

  32. God's holy word.

  33. This carefully researched account from Luke.

  34. And he went down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee.

  35. And he was teaching them on the Sabbath.

  36. And they were astonished at his teaching for his word possessed authority.

  37. And in the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon.

  38. And he cried out with a loud voice, Ha!

  39. What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth?

  40. Have you come to destroy us?

  41. I know who you are, the Holy One of God.

  42. But Jesus rebuked him, saying, Be silent and come out of him.

  43. And when the demon had thrown him down in their midst, he came out of him, having done him no harm.

  44. And they were all amazed and said to one another, What is this word?

  45. For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits and they come out.

  46. And reports about him went out into every place in the surrounding region.

  47. And he arose and left the synagogue and entered Simon's house.

  48. Now Simon's mother-in-law was ill with a high fever.

  49. And they appealed to him on her behalf.

  50. And he stood over her and rebuked the fever.

  51. And it left her and immediately she rose and began to serve them.

  52. Now when the sun was setting, all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to him.

  53. And he laid his hands on every one of them and healed them.

  54. And demons also came out of many, crying, You are the Son of God!

  55. But he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak, because they knew that he was the Christ.

  56. And when it was day, he departed and went into a desolate place.

  57. And the people sought him and came to him and would have kept him from leaving them.

  58. But he said to them, I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well.

  59. For I was sent for this purpose.

  60. And he was preaching in the synagogues of Judea.

  61. Pray with me.

  62. Father, we come to your word and give you thanks for it.

  63. It is indeed the only infallible rule of faith and practice.

  64. The authority on which we can rest.

  65. The place where we can trust.

  66. The truth in which we can have confidence.

  67. And so, Father, we come trusting.

  68. We come expectant.

  69. That when your word is opened and it intersects with our hearts,

  70. that your spirit will do things that we wouldn't have expected could happen.

  71. That you will not merely teach us, but that you will change us.

  72. By your word and by your spirit.

  73. Would you do that now as we look to this portion of your word and we ask it in Jesus' name.

  74. Amen.

  75. I grew up on Disney princess movies, among other things.

  76. At least, I hope there were other things.

  77. But all of those great classic movies.

  78. Great fairy tales where most of which have at the center, like many good stories,

  79. this conflict between good and evil, right?

  80. Constantly.

  81. No matter which one you're watching.

  82. Whether you're watching Belle versus Gaston.

  83. Or Ariel versus Ursula.

  84. Jasmine versus Jafar.

  85. Pick your favorite one.

  86. They're all centered around that kind of idea.

  87. And I would find myself, no matter which one I was watching,

  88. pulling for the good guys, right?

  89. Naturally, you're pulled in that way.

  90. For the good guy to come out on top against the villain.

  91. Some of you may prefer Luke versus Darth.

  92. Frodo versus Sauron.

  93. Sherlock versus Moriarty.

  94. Even Harry versus Voldemort.

  95. Regardless of which one you prefer.

  96. We all know these great stories of good versus evil, right?

  97. That conflict, though, is not merely in movies and fairy tales.

  98. One of the reasons that those stories so resonate with us

  99. is that they reflect the great conflict of good versus evil

  100. that underlies all of history.

  101. It's the battle between a good and holy God

  102. and the fallen angel Satan and his evil spirits.

  103. In this passage, we see in real space and time,

  104. in the unfolding of human history,

  105. a crucial battle in the great conflict.

  106. And what we will see in this story

  107. is that King Jesus demonstrates his unrivaled power

  108. in the great war between good and evil.

  109. Before we look again at Luke chapter 4,

    Luke 4 chapter mention

  110. we need to set this passage and that conflict

  111. that I'm talking about

  112. in the context of the greater story that the Bible tells.

  113. So if you turn all the way back to Genesis,

  114. it's at the very beginning of the story

  115. that we will see the battle lines drawn.

  116. What's at issue in this conflict?

  117. You know the story begins with God creating, right?

  118. God makes a good creation

  119. with humanity as the crown of his creation,

  120. created to live in perfect relationship with him,

  121. to reflect his image in his creation,

  122. to rule over the rest of his creation.

  123. That's how the story starts.

  124. Here's mankind to be in this intimate,

  125. close relationship with God.

  126. And then enter Satan, the serpent,

  127. who we later find out has rebelled against God

  128. and his good authority.

  129. And Satan draws humanity, Adam and Eve,

  130. into his rebellion, doesn't he?

  131. Against God.

  132. He tempts them to distrust God,

  133. to disobey God's commands,

  134. and therefore to disrupt

  135. their good relationship with God.

  136. As a result of this rebellion,

  137. God comes in and God pronounces a curse,

  138. a curse on the serpent,

  139. on Adam and Eve,

  140. and on all of creation,

  141. as a matter of fact.

  142. God's good creation has been marred

  143. by the ones intended to care for it

  144. and rule over it.

  145. Thorns and thistles,

  146. diseases and death

  147. enter the perfect creation.

  148. And so the battle lines are drawn, right?

  149. There they are.

  150. Satan is attacking the world God has made

  151. and the people that he made for himself

  152. to live in relationship with.

  153. Satan would have all of that for himself.

  154. The world and the people.

  155. He wants it.

  156. And God, in pronouncing the curse,

  157. launches a counterattack, so to speak.

  158. Genesis chapter 3, verse 15,

    Genesis 3:15

  159. when God is cursing the serpent,

  160. he says,

  161. I'm going to put enmity

  162. between you and the woman.

  163. Hostility.

  164. There will be war

  165. between your offspring and her offspring.

  166. He shall bruise your head

  167. and you shall bruise his heel.

  168. See that conflict between good and evil?

  169. All the way back at the beginning of the story.

  170. The enmity between God and the serpent

  171. resulting in enmity

  172. between the serpent and the woman

  173. and her offspring.

  174. A battle will unfold.

  175. But God promises, even here,

  176. that it's one that he,

  177. and in particular,

  178. a particular offspring of the woman,

  179. will win.

  180. So now fast forward to Luke chapter 4.

    Luke 4 chapter mention

  181. With the arrival of the Son of God,

  182. the Messiah,

  183. onto the scene of human history

  184. where this battle has been waged,

  185. this great conflict has been underway now

  186. for centuries,

  187. and he shows up

  188. and it begins to rage much more intensely.

  189. The heat is turned up.

  190. Already we saw a couple weeks ago

  191. at the beginning of Luke 4

  192. that Satan tempts Jesus,

  193. as he did Adam and Eve, right?

  194. To disobey God.

  195. To distrust Him

  196. and His good care for them.

  197. He doesn't have your best interests at heart.

  198. Take another way

  199. rather than God's way, Jesus.

  200. You can get what you want

  201. by this path.

  202. And Jesus faithfully responds

  203. by trusting and following God's Word.

  204. The second Adam, Jesus,

  205. succeeds where we

  206. and the first Adam have failed.

  207. He succeeds three times

  208. in painful,

  209. physically painful circumstances.

  210. Jesus conquers Satan.

  211. And Satan leaves him, right?

  212. Defeated,

  213. but not yet giving up.

  214. Leaves, Luke tells us,

  215. until an opportune time.

  216. The war continues.

  217. Then in the passage we read this morning,

  218. Jesus leaves Nazareth,

  219. His hometown,

  220. and heads to Capernaum.

  221. I love Luke's careful attention

  222. to detail

  223. and historical foundation,

  224. building for us something

  225. that we can trust

  226. and rooting it

  227. in places we know.

  228. Just like Nazareth,

  229. Capernaum is easy to locate.

  230. The eyewitnesses there

  231. could testify easily

  232. to the veracity

  233. of these accounts.

  234. Evil spirits may sound

  235. fanciful to you.

  236. You think,

  237. oh, come on.

  238. You know, evil spirits,

  239. and what is all of this?

  240. This is no fairy tale

  241. of good versus evil.

  242. This is the real deal.

  243. Hundreds of people

  244. are impacted,

  245. perhaps thousands,

  246. by what we read.

  247. They have been there,

  248. many of them,

  249. to tell about it,

  250. to confirm,

  251. did this indeed happen?

  252. You can still see today,

  253. in fact,

  254. the ruins of the synagogue

  255. in Capernaum.

  256. In the top left there

  257. in this picture,

  258. the white limestone,

  259. is ruins of the synagogue

  260. that was built

  261. in the fourth century.

  262. And you'll see down here

  263. the black basalt rock.

  264. That's the material

  265. that was actually used

  266. to build the synagogue

  267. on that exact same site

  268. that Jesus would have preached in.

  269. You can still see portions of it

  270. remaining underneath

  271. the white limestone synagogue.

  272. Right here in human history,

  273. in places you can still go

  274. and see and touch,

  275. Jesus shows up.

  276. And so here we are

  277. in the long day

  278. that I spoke of earlier.

  279. It's Sunday, right?

  280. And Jesus finds Himself where?

  281. Preaching at church.

  282. Notice verse 32.

  283. Even before any of the miracles start,

  284. even before the wonderful things

  285. He's going to do,

  286. His authority is evident

  287. in His words, isn't it?

  288. Just in what He's saying,

  289. they're astonished

  290. at His teaching

  291. for His word possessed authority.

  292. He didn't preach

  293. like the teachers of the law

  294. that the people were used to.

  295. Most of them preached

  296. in the style of the day,

  297. which went like this.

  298. They would open up the scroll

  299. and read the passage of Scripture.

  300. And then when they sat down

  301. to preach,

  302. what they would do

  303. is they would recite

  304. one rabbi after another.

  305. He says this.

  306. He says that.

  307. This guy says

  308. the passage means this.

  309. But this guy,

  310. on the other hand,

  311. takes a different view.

  312. That's the way

  313. that they preached regularly.

  314. Not so with Jesus.

  315. He speaks as one

  316. with authority.

  317. He speaks for Himself,

  318. doesn't He?

  319. Last week,

  320. today this Scripture

  321. is fulfilled

  322. in your hearing.

  323. You want to know

  324. what this passage

  325. from Isaiah means?

  326. Today it's fulfilled

  327. in your hearing.

  328. Says who?

  329. Says me.

  330. I declare to you

  331. the truth of God

  332. straight from me

  333. on my own authority.

  334. But then Jesus' authority

  335. is challenged

  336. in this passage.

  337. Satan's minions

  338. have entered people

  339. in Capernaum.

  340. And when they encounter Jesus,

  341. they attack,

  342. don't they?

  343. Verse 34 and verse 41,

  344. we hear them crying out

  345. the identity of Jesus.

  346. Jesus of Nazareth.

  347. The Holy One of God.

  348. The Son of God.

  349. These are terms

  350. of attack actually.

  351. Part of gaining

  352. the upper hand

  353. in conflict

  354. is knowing your opponent.

  355. Being able

  356. to identify them.

  357. The demons say,

  358. I know you.

  359. I know who you are.

  360. Did you hear

  361. that declaration of war?

  362. I know who you are

  363. so I can control you.

  364. I'm against you.

  365. What are you coming

  366. against us with,

  367. Jesus of Nazareth?

  368. The demons declaring war,

  369. the attack that's there,

  370. but also doing something else,

  371. seeking to discredit Jesus.

  372. What's the quickest way

  373. to discredit somebody

  374. for them?

  375. Hey,

  376. if the demons

  377. are the first ones

  378. to tell you who he is,

  379. that's definitely

  380. not who he is, right?

  381. If I heard it first

  382. from the demons,

  383. I'm never gonna believe it.

  384. So if the demon yells

  385. he's the son of God,

  386. he's the holy one of God,

  387. that can't be true.

  388. And so Jesus does what?

  389. He silences them immediately.

  390. Both times that they say this,

  391. Jesus rebukes them.

  392. Who's in charge?

  393. Jesus is in charge.

  394. He sends them away

  395. and does not even

  396. allow them to speak.

  397. So great is his authority

  398. over them.

  399. Jesus rebukes Satan

  400. and his demons

  401. and he shows his power

  402. in doing so.

  403. The people notice,

  404. don't they?

  405. Look at verse 36.

  406. What do the people say

  407. about Jesus

  408. when they see him

  409. cast these demons out?

  410. Verse 36.

  411. Verse 36,

  412. they look at him

  413. and they say,

  414. what's going on?

  415. What is this word?

  416. For with authority and power

  417. he commands the unclean spirits

  418. and they come out.

  419. What is it

  420. when he speaks like that?

  421. With authority and power

  422. he commands the unclean spirits.

  423. He speaks with authority

  424. and he backs it up

  425. demonstrating his authority

  426. so that it's undeniable

  427. who's in charge.

  428. The kingdom of Jesus

  429. comes in power.

  430. A king who powerfully

  431. brings freedom

  432. to those in the bondage

  433. of Satan

  434. and he does it

  435. with a word.

  436. This is not just a king

  437. who says things

  438. like what Ron read earlier.

  439. You can have freedom.

  440. You can have release

  441. from your bondage

  442. but it's just wishful thinking.

  443. No.

  444. The king comes with power

  445. and where he shows up

  446. there is freedom.

  447. When he speaks

  448. he acts.

  449. The people are amazed.

  450. What likely amazes them

  451. is the simplicity

  452. and the authority

  453. with which he

  454. casts out the demons.

  455. There were people

  456. who attempted exorcisms

  457. back in these days

  458. and they did it

  459. with a lot of elaborate

  460. tricks and spells.

  461. You would think of

  462. hocus pocus type

  463. stuff that happened.

  464. Jesus doesn't do anything

  465. tricky.

  466. No fancy words.

  467. He just commands

  468. the demons to come out.

  469. Jesus simply

  470. and authoritatively

  471. speaks

  472. and the power

  473. of the king

  474. is evident

  475. in its simplicity

  476. and in its freeing power

  477. that it actually happens

  478. as he says.

  479. Jesus comes

  480. to set captives free

  481. and in order

  482. to do that

  483. if he's going

  484. to set the captive free

  485. as he later explains

  486. you first have to

  487. bind the strong man

  488. holding them captive

  489. and then you can set

  490. the captives free

  491. and so Jesus

  492. does that.

  493. He binds

  494. the strong man

  495. Satan.

  496. The stronger man

  497. Jesus

  498. comes to demonstrate

  499. his great power.

  500. He overpowers

  501. Satan

  502. and then

  503. sets the captives

  504. free

  505. from the demons.

  506. He speaks

  507. the word

  508. they must

  509. obey

  510. and many people

  511. are released

  512. from their bondage

  513. and entirely

  514. unharmed

  515. aren't they?

  516. Protected

  517. by King Jesus.

  518. The demon

  519. comes out of him

  520. and he is not

  521. harmed.

  522. So Jesus

  523. is showing himself

  524. greater

  525. and stronger

  526. than Satan

  527. and his demons.

  528. But he doesn't

  529. stop there.

  530. You remember

  531. the forces of evil

  532. have wreaked

  533. havoc

  534. on God's

  535. good creation

  536. right?

  537. You know

  538. just think about

  539. what's happened

  540. since the fall

  541. of man.

  542. all of the ways

  543. that this curse

  544. on God's creation

  545. has played itself out.

  546. They've brought

  547. all of creation

  548. under a curse

  549. and so even

  550. when Satan

  551. and his minions

  552. aren't personally

  553. present

  554. the evil

  555. of the fall

  556. their trail

  557. of brokenness

  558. and destruction

  559. and disease

  560. persists

  561. doesn't it?

  562. They're limited

  563. in where they can be

  564. but the effects

  565. of what they've caused

  566. run rampant

  567. throughout

  568. the world.

  569. So perhaps

  570. Jesus is too weak

  571. or too late

  572. to be able

  573. to handle

  574. all the destruction

  575. that they've caused.

  576. What will he be able

  577. to do?

  578. Is it possible

  579. that they've brought

  580. so much devastation

  581. that the king

  582. won't be able

  583. to push it back?

  584. No way.

  585. No way.

  586. Not this king.

  587. He is coming

  588. as we sang

  589. just a few minutes ago

  590. to make his blessing

  591. flow

  592. where?

  593. Far as the curse

  594. is found

  595. everywhere

  596. all over the place

  597. throughout creation

  598. watch as Jesus

  599. rebukes

  600. the effects

  601. of the fall.

  602. Verse 38

  603. He arose

  604. and left the synagogue

  605. and entered

  606. Simon's house.

  607. Simon's mother-in-law

  608. was ill

  609. with a high fever

  610. and so they

  611. appealed to Jesus

  612. on her behalf

  613. and he stood

  614. over her

  615. and rebuked

  616. the fever

  617. and it left her

  618. and immediately

  619. she rose

  620. and began

  621. to serve them.

  622. I said Jesus

  623. rebukes

  624. the effects

  625. of the fall

  626. which may sound

  627. a little odd

  628. or strange

  629. to you.

  630. It seems to make

  631. them personal

  632. that he's speaking

  633. to them

  634. and rebuking them.

  635. It's because

  636. he uses

  637. the exact same

  638. word here

  639. as he does

  640. when he rebukes

  641. the demons

  642. twice in this passage.

  643. He rebukes

  644. the fever

  645. here

  646. and it

  647. leaves her.

  648. While it may be

  649. a fever

  650. an effect

  651. of the fall

  652. rather than

  653. a personal

  654. enemy

  655. Jesus sees

  656. the two

  657. as connected

  658. in the great

  659. conflict

  660. doesn't he?

  661. This may not be

  662. the personal

  663. enemy

  664. Satan

  665. and his demons

  666. but this is part

  667. of what they have

  668. brought

  669. into this

  670. creation

  671. and again

  672. Jesus demonstrates

  673. his power.

  674. This is a

  675. serious

  676. fever

  677. perhaps

  678. even malaria

  679. related

  680. that Dr. Luke

  681. carefully

  682. diagnoses

  683. for us

  684. and it is

  685. no match

  686. for King

  687. Jesus

  688. that dear woman

  689. is so

  690. freed from

  691. her fever

  692. that she is

  693. immediately

  694. up and

  695. serving

  696. right away

  697. fully

  698. functional

  699. back to

  700. her healthy

  701. self

  702. immediately

  703. but Jesus

  704. is not

  705. finished

  706. with one

  707. fever

  708. verse 40

  709. when the sun

  710. was setting

  711. all those

  712. who had

  713. any who

  714. were sick

  715. with various

  716. diseases

  717. brought them

  718. to him

  719. and he

  720. laid his

  721. hands

  722. on every

  723. one of

  724. them

  725. and healed

  726. them

  727. not just

  728. the one

  729. fever

  730. but now

  731. the sun

  732. goes down

  733. on the

  734. Sabbath

  735. and the

  736. people are

  737. able now

  738. again

  739. to carry

  740. people

  741. that they

  742. weren't allowed

  743. to carry

  744. on the

  745. Sabbath

  746. and so

  747. they begin

  748. to bring

  749. them to

  750. Jesus

  751. over and

  752. over

  753. person

  754. after person

  755. they bring

  756. the sick

  757. to him

  758. and with a

  759. personal

  760. touch

  761. Jesus

  762. heals

  763. them all

  764. that was

  765. uncommon in

  766. this culture

  767. you didn't

  768. touch

  769. the sick

  770. in order

  771. to heal

  772. and Jesus

  773. reaches and

  774. touches and

  775. heals

  776. though many

  777. people are there

  778. they're not mere

  779. numbers to

  780. Jesus

  781. he's not just

  782. trying to

  783. increase his

  784. count

  785. and how

  786. impressive it

  787. is

  788. no he

  789. cares

  790. personally

  791. he rules

  792. over all

  793. these effects

  794. of the fall

  795. many various

  796. diseases

  797. to bring

  798. freedom

  799. and to bring

  800. it to

  801. particular

  802. people

  803. that he cares

  804. about

  805. specifically

  806. and personally

  807. freeing them

  808. from the

  809. darkness

  810. that they

  811. are living

  812. under

  813. and restoring

  814. them

  815. to health

  816. see this is

  817. what happens

  818. when the king

  819. shows up

  820. isn't it

  821. this is what

  822. the kingdom

  823. looks like

  824. and feels

  825. like

  826. good starts

  827. to push

  828. back

  829. evil

  830. light begins

  831. to drive

  832. out

  833. darkness

  834. blessing

  835. starts

  836. overcoming

  837. the curse

  838. wherever it

  839. is found

  840. when Jesus

  841. and his

  842. kingdom

  843. show up

  844. somewhere

  845. Satan

  846. is run

  847. out of

  848. town

  849. the effects

  850. of the fall

  851. are reversed

  852. people

  853. experience

  854. freedom

  855. listen

  856. this is not

  857. a fairy tale

  858. this is not

  859. just a nice

  860. story

  861. friends

  862. this is

  863. this is

  864. Jesus

  865. this is

  866. the king

  867. we know

  868. and serve

  869. this is

  870. our older

  871. brother

  872. the one

  873. who is

  874. alive

  875. and ruling

  876. and working

  877. in our

  878. lives

  879. by his

  880. spirit

  881. so I

  882. say to

  883. those of

  884. you who

  885. are weary

  886. in the

  887. fight

  888. who feel

  889. like you're

  890. losing the

  891. battle

  892. like darkness

  893. is closing

  894. in

  895. be of

  896. good cheer

  897. listen

  898. in your

  899. life

  900. for the

  901. soft

  902. footsteps

  903. and the

  904. strong

  905. voice

  906. of the

  907. king

  908. and have

  909. hope

  910. because of

  911. him

  912. we do

  913. indeed

  914. have an

  915. active

  916. personal

  917. enemy

  918. Satan

  919. who is

  920. constantly

  921. waging

  922. spiritual

  923. warfare

  924. against

  925. us

  926. we do

  927. live in

  928. a world

  929. where the

  930. effects of

  931. the fall

  932. and the

  933. power of

  934. darkness

  935. are all

  936. over our

  937. hearts

  938. and our

  939. world

  940. day in

  941. and day

  942. out

  943. we're

  944. confronted

  945. with it

  946. it looks

  947. different

  948. for each

  949. of us

  950. you may

  951. be suffering

  952. under the

  953. bondage

  954. of

  955. pornography

  956. you may

  957. be suffering

  958. under the

  959. bondage

  960. of

  961. bitterness

  962. and

  963. unforgiveness

  964. the

  965. bondage

  966. of

  967. addiction

  968. the

  969. bondage

  970. of

  971. oppression

  972. many of

  973. those

  974. that we

  975. we confessed

  976. our struggle

  977. with

  978. and our

  979. bondage

  980. to

  981. earlier

  982. in our

  983. world

  984. these

  985. kinds

  986. of

  987. bondage

  988. often feel

  989. inescapable

  990. don't

  991. they

  992. you've

  993. felt

  994. that

  995. before

  996. there'll

  997. be no

  998. end

  999. to this

  1000. captivity

  1001. but know

  1002. this

  1003. while the

  1004. struggle

  1005. may be

  1006. hard

  1007. King

  1008. Jesus

  1009. rules

  1010. over

  1011. all of

  1012. these

  1013. in order

  1014. to bring

  1015. freedom

  1016. the

  1017. struggle

  1018. may

  1019. persist

  1020. even

  1021. to help

  1022. you

  1023. lean

  1024. more

  1025. upon

  1026. his

  1027. strength

  1028. and

  1029. trust

  1030. him

  1031. more

  1032. deeply

  1033. trust

  1034. his

  1035. love

  1036. for

  1037. you

  1038. but

  1039. don't

  1040. lose

  1041. heart

  1042. King

  1043. Jesus

  1044. fights

  1045. and

  1046. wins

  1047. for

  1048. you

  1049. and

  1050. he

  1051. will

  1052. Southwood

  1053. as we

  1054. seek

  1055. to bring

  1056. the

  1057. kingdom

  1058. to bear

  1059. in

  1060. Huntsville

  1061. we

  1062. should

  1063. expect

  1064. King

  1065. Jesus

  1066. to bring

  1067. freedom

  1068. we

  1069. come up

  1070. against

  1071. all

  1072. sorts

  1073. of

  1074. bondage

  1075. you

  1076. may

  1077. feel

  1078. like

  1079. you're

  1080. beating

  1081. your

  1082. head

  1083. against

  1084. the

  1085. wall

  1086. running

  1087. into

  1088. the

  1089. bondage

  1090. created

  1091. by

  1092. unjust

  1093. systems

  1094. the

  1095. bondage

  1096. of

  1097. generational

  1098. poverty

  1099. the

  1100. bondage

  1101. of

  1102. power

  1103. hungry

  1104. leaders

  1105. and

  1106. money

  1107. hungry

  1108. payday

  1109. lenders

  1110. and

  1111. you

  1112. think

  1113. there's

  1114. nothing

  1115. that can

  1116. help

  1117. look

  1118. again

  1119. to

  1120. King

  1121. Jesus

  1122. who

  1123. rules

  1124. over

  1125. all

  1126. of

  1127. these

  1128. two

  1129. to

  1130. bring

  1131. freedom

  1132. and

  1133. go

  1134. forward

  1135. with

  1136. him

  1137. the

  1138. bondage

  1139. you

  1140. can't

  1141. seem

  1142. to

  1143. break

  1144. through

  1145. is

  1146. pushing

  1147. you

  1148. to

  1149. trust

  1150. him

  1151. more

  1152. because

  1153. he's

  1154. the

  1155. one

  1156. with

  1157. the

  1158. power

  1159. so

  1160. don't

  1161. lose

  1162. heart

  1163. King

  1164. Jesus

  1165. fights

  1166. and

  1167. wins

  1168. for

  1169. you

  1170. and

  1171. through

  1172. you

  1173. his

  1174. church

  1175. where

  1176. King

  1177. Jesus

  1178. is

  1179. proclaimed

  1180. and

  1181. promoted

  1182. Satan

  1183. evil

  1184. and

  1185. all

  1186. the

  1187. effects

  1188. of

  1189. the

  1190. fall

  1191. are

  1192. pushed

  1193. back

  1194. before

  1195. King

  1196. Jesus

  1197. angels

  1198. prostrate

  1199. fall

  1200. demons

  1201. shudder

  1202. Satan

  1203. himself

  1204. flees

  1205. and

  1206. all

  1207. of

  1208. creation

  1209. rejoices

  1210. in the

  1211. power

  1212. of her

  1213. king

  1214. that's

  1215. what

  1216. happens

  1217. when

  1218. the

  1219. king

  1220. shows

  1221. up

  1222. that's

  1223. what

  1224. happens

  1225. in

  1226. your

  1227. life

  1228. that's

  1229. what

  1230. happens

  1231. in

  1232. your

  1233. neighborhood

  1234. in

  1235. your

  1236. friend's

  1237. life

  1238. in

  1239. your

  1240. spouse's

  1241. life

  1242. in

  1243. your

  1244. kid's

  1245. life

  1246. when

  1247. Jesus

  1248. shows

  1249. up

  1250. that's

  1251. good

  1252. news

  1253. it's

  1254. been

  1255. quite a

  1256. day

  1257. for

  1258. Jesus

  1259. right

  1260. the

  1261. kingdom's

  1262. been

  1263. power

  1264. going

  1265. out

  1266. from

  1267. him

  1268. all

  1269. over

  1270. the

  1271. place

  1272. it's

  1273. not

  1274. surprising

  1275. perhaps

  1276. the next

  1277. morning

  1278. we find

  1279. him

  1280. alone

  1281. and

  1282. Mark

  1283. tells

  1284. us

  1285. in

  1286. his

  1287. gospel

  1288. that

  1289. he's

  1290. praying

  1291. look

  1292. at

  1293. the

  1294. end

  1295. of

  1296. our

  1297. passage

  1298. when

  1299. it

  1300. was

  1301. day

  1302. he

  1303. departed

  1304. and

  1305. went

  1306. into

  1307. a

  1308. desolate

  1309. place

  1310. and

  1311. the

  1312. people

  1313. sought

  1314. him

  1315. and

  1316. came

  1317. to

  1318. him

  1319. and

  1320. would

  1321. have

  1322. kept

  1323. him

  1324. from

  1325. leaving

  1326. them

  1327. but

  1328. he

  1329. said

  1330. to

  1331. them

  1332. I

  1333. must

  1334. preach

  1335. the

  1336. good

  1337. news

  1338. of

  1339. the

  1340. kingdom

  1341. of

  1342. God

  1343. to

  1344. the

  1345. other

  1346. towns

  1347. as

  1348. well

  1349. for

  1350. I

  1351. was

  1352. sent

  1353. for

  1354. this

  1355. purpose

  1356. and

  1357. he

  1358. was

  1359. preaching

  1360. in

  1361. the

  1362. synagogues

  1363. in

  1364. Judea

  1365. can

  1366. you

  1367. blame

  1368. the

  1369. people

  1370. in

  1371. Capernaum

  1372. I

  1373. mean

  1374. after

  1375. all

  1376. the

  1377. great

  1378. things

  1379. that

  1380. he's

  1381. doing

  1382. hey

  1383. hang

  1384. around

  1385. Jesus

  1386. stay

  1387. a

  1388. while

  1389. I

  1390. like

  1391. how

  1392. this

  1393. feels

  1394. you

  1395. know

  1396. neat

  1397. things

  1398. happening

  1399. if I

  1400. ever

  1401. need

  1402. a

  1403. doctor

  1404. it

  1405. seems

  1406. to

  1407. go

  1408. pretty

  1409. quickly

  1410. this

  1411. is

  1412. wonderful

  1413. stay

  1414. around

  1415. they

  1416. would

  1417. have

  1418. had

  1419. him

  1420. stay

  1421. but

  1422. Jesus

  1423. is

  1424. no

  1425. localized

  1426. domesticated

  1427. miracle

  1428. worker

  1429. is

  1430. he

  1431. you

  1432. can't

  1433. tame

  1434. this

  1435. king

  1436. he

  1437. must

  1438. go

  1439. the

  1440. kingdom

  1441. is

  1442. not

  1443. for

  1444. any

  1445. one

  1446. ethnic

  1447. group

  1448. or

  1449. any

  1450. one

  1451. geographical

  1452. region

  1453. Jesus

  1454. must

  1455. go

  1456. elsewhere

  1457. because

  1458. this

  1459. is

  1460. why

  1461. he

  1462. was

  1463. sent

  1464. his

  1465. mission

  1466. is

  1467. bigger

  1468. than

  1469. Capernaum

  1470. isn't

  1471. it

  1472. the

  1473. good

  1474. news

  1475. of

  1476. his

  1477. kingdom

  1478. the

  1479. freedom

  1480. the

  1481. release

  1482. the

  1483. forgiveness

  1484. the fact

  1485. that it

  1486. is

  1487. now

  1488. jubilee

  1489. for

  1490. everyone

  1491. because

  1492. the

  1493. king

  1494. is

  1495. here

  1496. that

  1497. needs

  1498. to

  1499. be

  1500. shared

  1501. elsewhere

  1502. the

  1503. fight

  1504. against

  1505. evil

  1506. must

  1507. be

  1508. carried

  1509. on

  1510. more

  1511. must

  1512. be

  1513. brought

  1514. in

  1515. to

  1516. hear

  1517. and

  1518. taste

  1519. and

  1520. feel

  1521. the

  1522. kingdom

  1523. now

  1524. Jesus

  1525. has

  1526. certainly

  1527. lodged

  1528. some

  1529. resounding

  1530. initial

  1531. victories

  1532. here in

  1533. Capernaum

  1534. on this

  1535. one

  1536. day

  1537. but

  1538. this

  1539. reminder

  1540. I

  1541. think

  1542. at the

  1543. end

  1544. of the

  1545. passage

  1546. is

  1547. here

  1548. particularly

  1549. to help

  1550. us

  1551. remember

  1552. that it's

  1553. not

  1554. over

  1555. the

  1556. mission

  1557. for which

  1558. he was

  1559. sent

  1560. is not

  1561. yet

  1562. complete

  1563. Jesus

  1564. says

  1565. the

  1566. conflict

  1567. with

  1568. evil

  1569. not

  1570. yet

  1571. over

  1572. and that

  1573. points us

  1574. to where

  1575. it's all

  1576. headed

  1577. you see to

  1578. this point

  1579. Jesus

  1580. has merely

  1581. been

  1582. declaring

  1583. and asserting

  1584. his authority

  1585. over Satan

  1586. and his

  1587. demons

  1588. right

  1589. pronouncing it

  1590. with a word

  1591. that he is

  1592. in charge

  1593. he declares

  1594. his power

  1595. over Satan

  1596. and the

  1597. demons

  1598. that he

  1599. as they have

  1600. correctly

  1601. identified

  1602. the holy

  1603. son of

  1604. God

  1605. rules over

  1606. them

  1607. by divine

  1608. right

  1609. and fiat

  1610. he speaks

  1611. and they must

  1612. obey

  1613. his righteous

  1614. word

  1615. but he

  1616. couldn't just

  1617. pronounce

  1618. for us

  1619. eternal

  1620. victory

  1621. over Satan

  1622. could he

  1623. he had to

  1624. procure it

  1625. he couldn't

  1626. just say

  1627. that we

  1628. win

  1629. and it

  1630. be a

  1631. reality

  1632. because

  1633. there's

  1634. something

  1635. wrong

  1636. with us

  1637. see

  1638. when I

  1639. think about

  1640. watching all

  1641. of those

  1642. movies

  1643. with good

  1644. versus evil

  1645. in them

  1646. I said

  1647. I always

  1648. end up

  1649. rooting for

  1650. the good

  1651. guys

  1652. right

  1653. and part

  1654. of that

  1655. is really

  1656. good and

  1657. true

  1658. because

  1659. who always

  1660. wins

  1661. the good

  1662. guys

  1663. because

  1664. that story

  1665. reflects

  1666. this story

  1667. and so

  1668. you like

  1669. to root

  1670. for them

  1671. we like

  1672. to root

  1673. for the

  1674. winning

  1675. team

  1676. but I

  1677. think

  1678. along

  1679. the way

  1680. I

  1681. convince

  1682. myself

  1683. that

  1684. it's not

  1685. just

  1686. that I'm

  1687. cheering

  1688. for the

  1689. good

  1690. guys

  1691. to win

  1692. but I'm

  1693. one of

  1694. them

  1695. I'm on

  1696. the good

  1697. side

  1698. like

  1699. I mean

  1700. after all

  1701. I'm in

  1702. church

  1703. right

  1704. I mean

  1705. obviously

  1706. this is

  1707. the good

  1708. side

  1709. we naturally

  1710. assume

  1711. that we're

  1712. on the

  1713. side of

  1714. good

  1715. but remember

  1716. the beginning

  1717. of the

  1718. story

  1719. you remember

  1720. when this

  1721. conflict

  1722. was first

  1723. played out

  1724. back in

  1725. Genesis

  1726. we have

  1727. rebelled

  1728. against

  1729. God

  1730. we've

  1731. joined

  1732. the

  1733. rebellion

  1734. having

  1735. rebelled

  1736. we are

  1737. in bondage

  1738. to sin

  1739. by birth

  1740. by nature

  1741. all of us

  1742. the Bible

  1743. says

  1744. enemies

  1745. of God

  1746. not

  1747. not on

  1748. his side

  1749. naturally

  1750. but his

  1751. enemies

  1752. and so

  1753. Jesus

  1754. has to

  1755. rescue

  1756. us

  1757. he doesn't

  1758. just

  1759. declare

  1760. something

  1761. he has

  1762. to go

  1763. do

  1764. something

  1765. in order

  1766. to address

  1767. our

  1768. problem

  1769. to do

  1770. that

  1771. to rescue

  1772. us

  1773. he doesn't

  1774. just assert

  1775. his unrivaled

  1776. power and

  1777. authority

  1778. which he

  1779. clearly

  1780. has

  1781. no he

  1782. does

  1783. what

  1784. he lays

  1785. down

  1786. his

  1787. very

  1788. life

  1789. on the

  1790. cross

  1791. the

  1792. strong

  1793. one

  1794. the

  1795. mighty

  1796. one

  1797. before

  1798. whom

  1799. no one

  1800. could

  1801. stand

  1802. and whom

  1803. no one

  1804. could

  1805. bind

  1806. becomes

  1807. seemingly

  1808. weak

  1809. willingly

  1810. is held

  1811. on the

  1812. cross

  1813. in order

  1814. to rescue

  1815. us

  1816. and set

  1817. us

  1818. free

  1819. and remarkably

  1820. in so doing

  1821. when Jesus

  1822. goes to the

  1823. cross

  1824. he actually

  1825. achieves

  1826. ultimate

  1827. victory

  1828. over Satan

  1829. and evil

  1830. Colossians

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  1831. chapter 2

  1832. how does

  1833. Paul say it

  1834. when you

  1835. are dead

  1836. in your

  1837. sins

  1838. and the

  1839. uncircumcision

  1840. of your

  1841. flesh

  1842. our

  1843. problem

  1844. right

  1845. we were

  1846. dead

  1847. God

  1848. made you

  1849. alive

  1850. with Christ

  1851. how

  1852. he forgave

  1853. us all

  1854. our sins

  1855. having

  1856. cancelled

  1857. the charge

  1858. of our

  1859. legal

  1860. indebtedness

  1861. which stood

  1862. against us

  1863. and condemned

  1864. us

  1865. we were

  1866. doomed

  1867. he did

  1868. it

  1869. how

  1870. he took

  1871. it away

  1872. nailing

  1873. it

  1874. to the

  1875. cross

  1876. and having

  1877. disarmed

  1878. the powers

  1879. and authorities

  1880. Satan

  1881. and his

  1882. demons

  1883. he made

  1884. a public

  1885. spectacle

  1886. of them

  1887. triumphing

  1888. over them

  1889. by the

  1890. cross

  1891. triumphing

  1892. over them

  1893. when

  1894. when was

  1895. it clear

  1896. when was

  1897. the decisive

  1898. blow

  1899. delivered

  1900. on the

  1901. cross

  1902. at great

  1903. cost

  1904. to himself

  1905. when the

  1906. almighty

  1907. king

  1908. humbled

  1909. himself

  1910. to the

  1911. point

  1912. of death

  1913. even

  1914. death

  1915. on a

  1916. cross

  1917. he achieved

  1918. for us

  1919. what he

  1920. already

  1921. had

  1922. for himself

  1923. victory

  1924. power

  1925. power

  1926. over

  1927. Satan

  1928. and all

  1929. the effects

  1930. of evil

  1931. in our

  1932. world

  1933. sin

  1934. death

  1935. and the

  1936. grave

  1937. no longer

  1938. rule

  1939. over us

  1940. in fact

  1941. death

  1942. starts

  1943. working

  1944. backwards

  1945. the effects

  1946. of the fall

  1947. begin to be

  1948. reversed

  1949. in our

  1950. lives

  1951. and in

  1952. our

  1953. world

  1954. I love

  1955. the way

  1956. the valley

  1957. of vision

  1958. prayer

  1959. says it

  1960. Jesus

  1961. strides

  1962. forth

  1963. as the

  1964. victor

  1965. conqueror

  1966. of death

  1967. hell

  1968. and all

  1969. opposing

  1970. might

  1971. he bursts

  1972. the bands

  1973. of death

  1974. tramples

  1975. the powers

  1976. of darkness

  1977. down

  1978. and lives

  1979. forever

  1980. he

  1981. my

  1982. gracious

  1983. surety

  1984. apprehended

  1985. for payment

  1986. of my

  1987. debt

  1988. comes

  1989. forth

  1990. from the

  1991. prison

  1992. house

  1993. of the

  1994. grave

  1995. free

  1996. and

  1997. triumphant

  1998. over sin

  1999. Satan

  2000. and death

  2001. show me

  2002. herein

  2003. the proof

  2004. that his

  2005. vicarious

  2006. offering

  2007. the one

  2008. in my

  2009. place

  2010. the one

  2011. that if

  2012. he made

  2013. it

  2014. and he

  2015. came forth

  2016. free

  2017. and victorious

  2018. shows that

  2019. I will

  2020. too

  2021. show me

  2022. that offering

  2023. is accepted

  2024. that the

  2025. claims of

  2026. justice

  2027. are satisfied

  2028. that the

  2029. devil's

  2030. scepter

  2031. is

  2032. shivered

  2033. that his

  2034. wrongful

  2035. throne

  2036. is

  2037. leveled

  2038. King

  2039. Jesus

  2040. reigns

  2041. you

  2042. can't

  2043. tame

  2044. this

  2045. King

  2046. he

  2047. will

  2048. reign

  2049. forever

  2050. and ever

  2051. and ever

  2052. and because

  2053. he does

  2054. no throne

  2055. or power

  2056. or ruler

  2057. or authority

  2058. can rival

  2059. him

  2060. can stand

  2061. before him

  2062. or before

  2063. us

  2064. his people

  2065. because we

  2066. will reign

  2067. with him

  2068. because his

  2069. power lives

  2070. within us

  2071. by his

  2072. spirit

  2073. the mighty

  2074. king

  2075. reigns

  2076. with

  2077. unrivaled

  2078. power

  2079. power

  2080. and the

  2081. mighty

  2082. king

  2083. with

  2084. unrivaled

  2085. power

  2086. takes

  2087. our

  2088. place

  2089. of

  2090. weakness

  2091. pays

  2092. our

  2093. debts

  2094. which

  2095. were

  2096. great

  2097. redeems

  2098. us

  2099. from

  2100. our

  2101. sins

  2102. which

  2103. were

  2104. many

  2105. so that

  2106. we

  2107. might

  2108. live

  2109. and reign

  2110. with

  2111. him

  2112. forever

  2113. completely

  2114. forgiven

  2115. from a

  2116. debt

  2117. that we

  2118. could

  2119. never

  2120. repay

  2121. completely

  2122. free

  2123. from

  2124. bonds

  2125. that we

  2126. could

  2127. never

  2128. break

  2129. in fact

  2130. back to

  2131. the beginning

  2132. back to

  2133. a restored

  2134. creation

  2135. the way

  2136. God created

  2137. it to be

  2138. and most

  2139. importantly

  2140. back in a

  2141. perfect

  2142. relationship

  2143. with God

  2144. the way

  2145. he made

  2146. us to be

  2147. the desire

  2148. of his

  2149. heart

  2150. for us

  2151. and Jesus

  2152. brings us

  2153. back there

  2154. amen

  2155. amen

  2156. let's pray

  2157. Jesus

  2158. thank you

  2159. what

  2160. what

  2161. what more

  2162. could we

  2163. say

  2164. for what

  2165. you our

  2166. king

  2167. have done

  2168. we are

  2169. those who

  2170. are weak

  2171. who are

  2172. are not

  2173. able

  2174. to rescue

  2175. ourselves

  2176. we're in

  2177. bondage

  2178. even when

  2179. we're not

  2180. aware of

  2181. it

  2182. we

  2183. battle

  2184. against

  2185. sin

  2186. and

  2187. Satan

  2188. foes

  2189. that on

  2190. our own

  2191. we're

  2192. powerless

  2193. to

  2194. defeat

  2195. but

  2196. foes

  2197. that in

  2198. Jesus

  2199. we have

  2200. already

  2201. conquered

  2202. and we

  2203. are more

  2204. than conquerors

  2205. through him

  2206. who loves

  2207. us

  2208. and will

  2209. never be

  2210. separated

  2211. from us

  2212. with whom

  2213. we will

  2214. reign

  2215. forever

  2216. and ever

  2217. Lord

  2218. Jesus

  2219. would the

  2220. confidence

  2221. of seeing

  2222. your

  2223. power

  2224. at work

  2225. give us

  2226. hope

  2227. not in

  2228. ourselves

  2229. we have

  2230. no hope

  2231. there

  2232. but in

  2233. you

  2234. may give us

  2235. great confidence

  2236. this week

  2237. as we battle

  2238. wherever you

  2239. have placed us

  2240. and in whatever

  2241. difficult place

  2242. you have us

  2243. that King

  2244. Jesus can

  2245. conquer there

  2246. and will

  2247. conquer there

  2248. may we

  2249. trust him

  2250. every moment

  2251. of every day

  2252. we give

  2253. praise to

  2254. him

  2255. amen
