  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. Amen. Thanks, y'all. Thanks, James.

  4. It's a beautiful arrangement of those beautiful words straight from Isaiah chapter 40,

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  5. which we're going to be reading here in just a minute.

  6. Remember, we're trying this Christmas season to slow down a little bit,

  7. to consider our hearts, how the reality of the Christmas story,

  8. the incarnation of the Son of God speaks to and should shape the deepest parts of who we are.

  9. And so last week we started by talking about our deep longings,

  10. our desire for fulfillment, for the things in this world to be as they should be.

  11. We saw in Isaiah 11 that the promise of Christmas is an eternal hope

  12. for those longings one day, someday to be truly met

  13. as Jesus comes to make us and the world everything we were created to be.

  14. Christmas gives us an eternal hope,

  15. not a hope placed in a temporary change of circumstances or improvement in life situation,

  16. but rather hope in an eternal Savior

  17. and His complete and lasting fulfillment of our deepest longings.

  18. And you may say, and you may have said to yourself last week,

  19. well, that's nice. That's all well and good.

  20. That's true. I believe that.

  21. But my life is hard.

  22. Things are tough.

  23. I'm looking forward to eternity, but today is really difficult for me.

  24. What I'm facing now is still overwhelming to me.

  25. Does God care anything about that?

  26. Does Christmas have anything to speak to me in this life at all?

  27. Well, it does.

  28. And it's never less than that eternal hope,

  29. but it's also a message of comfort for us right where we are today as well.

  30. That's what we'll hear this morning in Isaiah chapter 40.

    Isaiah 40 chapter mention

  31. This passage is written to God's people in exile,

  32. taken away from the promised land under an oppressive foreign ruler,

  33. without a home,

  34. seemingly without a God to care for them.

  35. Listen to God's message for those people in Isaiah 40 at verse 1.

  36. The message is comfort.

  37. Comfort.

  38. Comfort.

  39. Comfort my people, says your God.

  40. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem and cry to her that her warfare is ended,

  41. that her iniquity is pardoned,

  42. that she has received from the Lord's hand double for all her sins.

  43. A voice cries,

  44. in the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord.

  45. Make straight in the desert a highway for our God.

  46. Every valley shall be lifted up and every mountain and hill be made low.

  47. The uneven ground shall become level and the rough places a plain.

  48. And the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together.

  49. For the mouth of the Lord has spoken.

  50. A voice says cry.

  51. And I said,

  52. What shall I cry?

  53. All flesh is grass and all its beauty is like the flower of the field.

  54. The grass withers.

  55. The flower fades when the breath of the Lord blows on it.

  56. Surely the people are grass.

  57. The grass withers.

  58. The flower fades.

  59. But the word of our God will stand forever.

  60. Get you up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good news.

  61. Lift up your voice with strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good news.

  62. Lift it up.

  63. Fear not.

  64. Say to the cities of Judah,

  65. Behold your God.

  66. Behold the Lord God comes with might.

  67. And his arm rules for him.

  68. Behold his reward is with him and his recompense before him.

  69. He will tend his flock like a shepherd.

  70. He will gather the lambs in his arms.

  71. He will carry them in his bosom.

  72. And gently lead those that are with young.

  73. Thus far God's holy, inerrant, infallible word.

  74. As we just read, the grass withers.

  75. The flower fades.

  76. But the word of our God will indeed stand forever.

  77. Let's ask for his help now as we look to his word together this morning.

  78. Pray with me.

  79. Father, we are so grateful for the gift of your word.

  80. For the privilege of holding it.

  81. Of reading it.

  82. Of hearing it.

  83. And then of your spirit working it into our hearts.

  84. Changing us by it.

  85. That it would be what shapes our hearts.

  86. More than anything else we read this week.

  87. More than anything else we watch or experience this week.

  88. Would you, Father, open our hearts.

  89. Soften them to your word.

  90. And speak to us clearly.

  91. I need to hear from you.

  92. We need to hear from you.

  93. And so would you speak through your word.

  94. As you love to do.

  95. We thank you for that.

  96. In Jesus' name.

  97. Amen.

  98. Kids, some of you will know my friend Alexander.

  99. Alexander had a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.

  100. Some of you have read about his day before.

  101. Alexander looks like that all the time.

  102. That's the kind of face you have when you have a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad days.

  103. I'm not going to read you his whole story this morning.

  104. But I want to give you just a taste of the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.

  105. It goes like this.

  106. I went to sleep with gum in my mouth.

  107. And now there's gum in my hair.

  108. And when I got out of bed this morning, I tripped on the skateboard.

  109. And by mistake, I dropped my sweater in the sink while the water was running.

  110. And I could tell it was going to be a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.

  111. At breakfast, Anthony found a Corvette Stingray car kit in his breakfast cereal box.

  112. And Nick found a junior undercover agent code ring in his breakfast cereal box.

  113. But in my breakfast cereal box, all I found was breakfast cereal.

  114. I think I'll move to Australia.

  115. At school, Mrs. Dickens liked Paul's picture of the sailboat better than my picture of the invisible castle.

  116. At singing time, she said I sang too loud.

  117. At counting time, she said I left out 16.

  118. Who needs 16?

  119. I could tell it was going to be a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.

  120. I could tell because Paul said I wasn't his best friend anymore.

  121. He said that Philip Parker was his best friend.

  122. And that Albert Moya was his next best friend.

  123. And that I was only his third best friend.

  124. There were two cupcakes in Philip Parker's lunch bag.

  125. And Albert got a Hershey bar with almonds.

  126. And Paul's mother gave him a piece of jelly roll that had little coconut sprinkles on the top.

  127. Guess whose mother forgot to put in dessert?

  128. It was a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.

  129. That's what it was because after school, my mom took us all to the dentist.

  130. And Dr. Fields found a cavity just in me.

  131. Come back next week and I'll fix it, Dr. Fields said.

  132. Next week, I said, I'm going to Australia.

  133. On the way downstairs, the elevator door closed on my foot.

  134. And while we were waiting for my mom to go get the car, Anthony made me fall where it was muddy.

  135. And then when I started crying because of the mud, Nick said I was a crybaby.

  136. And while I was punching Nick for saying crybaby, my mom came back with the car and scolded me for being muddy and fighting.

  137. It's a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day, I told everybody.

  138. No one even answered.

  139. There were lima beans for dinner and I hate limas.

  140. There was kissing on TV and I hate kissing.

  141. My bath was too hot, I got soap in my eyes, my marble went down the drain and I had to wear my railroad train pajamas.

  142. I hate my railroad train pajamas.

  143. When I went to bed, Nick took back the pillow he said I could keep and the Mickey Mouse nightlight burned out and I bit my tongue.

  144. The cat wants to sleep with Anthony, not with me.

  145. It has been a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day.

  146. My mom says some days are like that.

  147. Even in Australia.

  148. Those hard days happen, don't they?

  149. Even in Australia.

  150. Kids, have you ever had a really, really hard day?

  151. Anybody had a hard day?

  152. Yes, some of you have had.

  153. And all of your parents are thinking, no, you've never had a really, really hard day before.

  154. You have, we've all had hard days.

  155. The things that are hard for us may be different from the ones that are hard for Alexander.

  156. But we've all had really hard days, haven't we?

  157. Sometimes we feel like day after day after day for a season of days.

  158. God's people, as I said earlier, are facing some of those really hard days when God speaks to them in Isaiah 40.

  159. It's written to people in specific, difficult situations in their lives.

  160. Their whole world has been shattered.

  161. They're far away from home in exile.

  162. Nothing around that is comforting to them.

  163. They're feeling alone and abandoned by the God who has promised them good.

  164. Many of them are depressed about themselves because they know that their idolatry has led to this.

  165. The darkness has gotten so great around them, they describe that in Isaiah,

  166. that they've begun to wonder if God even cares about them and their plight.

  167. In verse 27 of this chapter, they say,

  168. Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel,

  169. My way is hidden from the Lord, and my cause is disregarded by my God?

  170. Why is God not fixing this?

  171. Where is He in the disappointment that I'm living?

  172. Does He even care and know about how hard this is?

  173. Those are only some of the questions that we ask in our grief, aren't they?

  174. Why is God not solving the problems I'm facing in this world?

  175. Where are you, God?

  176. Are you even there?

  177. Do you even care about my pain, about the deep disappointment I feel with where I am,

  178. with how things are?

  179. Some of us are asking those questions this morning.

  180. Some of us have asked them in other particular situations in our lives,

  181. when the grief has mounted in our hearts.

  182. Most of us will ask them again,

  183. when the pain and the grief comes back,

  184. and we weren't planning on it or expecting it,

  185. and these questions will come quickly to our hearts.

  186. Something happens and your world is shattered.

  187. You feel alone and overwhelmed with grief.

  188. Your husband abandons you,

  189. and you grieve the loss of a dream of family life.

  190. You suffer a life-changing illness or injury,

  191. and you grieve the loss of normalcy and functionality.

  192. You fall into that sin again,

  193. and you feel beaten down,

  194. and you grieve the loss of self-worth,

  195. and your hope for ever being different,

  196. or ever overcoming this.

  197. You feel the darkness of depression closing in around you,

  198. and you grieve the loss of joy in life,

  199. and the hope of having a good day ever again.

  200. Getting out of bed may be hard.

  201. Laughing may be hard.

  202. Praying may be really hard.

  203. And we say things in those moments like,

  204. no one has been where I am.

  205. I just feel so alone.

  206. No one understands or cares about how I feel.

  207. And when we say those things,

  208. we quite naturally start to feel the same things about God,

  209. don't we?

  210. Just like the Israelites,

  211. feeling,

  212. He's abandoned me too.

  213. He doesn't care about me.

  214. Perhaps I don't even deserve for Him to care

  215. about me after what I've done.

  216. How could He possibly still care about me?

  217. And He can't be trusted anyway.

  218. I become a Christian.

  219. I start going to church.

  220. I really start trying to live for Jesus.

  221. And then all this happens?

  222. I mean,

  223. here I am.

  224. I find myself,

  225. God, is this how you treat people

  226. who try to live for you?

  227. Is that the way you work, God?

  228. So deep,

  229. deep grief is something that we're all familiar with

  230. in one way or another.

  231. It may be different for each of us,

  232. but we know the feeling.

  233. Now Isaiah in his prophecy

  234. has already promised eternal hope

  235. in a coming Messiah.

  236. But here in chapter 40,

  237. the focus of his ministry shifts

  238. from talking to people

  239. about a potential coming exile

  240. and warning them about that

  241. to actually speaking to those

  242. who find themselves in exile.

  243. And for most of the rest

  244. of this lengthy prophetic book,

  245. that's what he's doing.

  246. He's addressing those people,

  247. offering comfort

  248. to those who are in exile,

  249. grieving their difficult plight.

  250. And that's how Isaiah starts

  251. this section at the beginning

  252. of chapter 40, right?

  253. Comfort!

  254. Comfort my people,

  255. says the Lord.

  256. And the comfort is not complex.

  257. I'm not going to pretend

  258. like it is this morning,

  259. but it's exactly the comfort

  260. that we need.

  261. The essence of comfort

  262. in Isaiah 40,

  263. the comfort of Christmas,

  264. is God is with us.

  265. You are not alone.

  266. You have not been abandoned.

  267. Your pain is not purposeless.

  268. God is with you.

  269. That's actually the essence

  270. of comfort, isn't it?

  271. Think about it.

  272. What's most comforting to you

  273. in your low, dark places?

  274. What does comfort feel like?

  275. Who's been comforting to you?

  276. Comfort is the person

  277. who just shows up with you,

  278. isn't it?

  279. Who enters into your pain

  280. and your grief

  281. and who stays with you

  282. while it hurts.

  283. And even if it keeps hurting,

  284. they stay with you.

  285. They stay there with you.

  286. They're for you.

  287. And God Himself

  288. shows up with us.

  289. I'm not going to make it

  290. more complex than that.

  291. But as you walk through

  292. these verses

  293. and see more of who God is,

  294. it makes it perhaps

  295. even more beautiful

  296. and even more comforting

  297. to us.

  298. Tell me more about this God

  299. who's there with me,

  300. who shows up.

  301. How can I know He's with me

  302. and for me?

  303. Because, well,

  304. it does not feel like that.

  305. That's not what I feel

  306. in those moments.

  307. I don't feel like He's with me

  308. or for me.

  309. Who is He?

  310. Well, the God promised

  311. to be with us first

  312. is the God whose commitment

  313. to His people

  314. is unwavering.

  315. Look at just the first verse

  316. of this chapter.

  317. There's enough comfort

  318. in these two pronouns alone

  319. for the whole sanctuary

  320. of us this morning.

  321. Look at that.

  322. Comfort, comfort,

  323. my people,

  324. says your God.

  325. Comfort, my people,

  326. says your God.

  327. They've done nothing

  328. to earn the status

  329. as His people

  330. and everything

  331. to lose it.

  332. God has even had to send them

  333. into exile,

  334. into agony,

  335. apart from the things

  336. that He has promised

  337. for them.

  338. But as I do that,

  339. He says,

  340. you are still

  341. my people

  342. and I am still

  343. your God.

  344. He says,

  345. speaking tenderly

  346. to us,

  347. verse 2.

  348. It's the comfort

  349. of a crying child

  350. who has failed

  351. and fears the rejection

  352. of everyone

  353. being scooped up

  354. by a parent

  355. and told,

  356. oh my sweet girl,

  357. your daddy is here.

  358. I've got you.

  359. My beloved friend,

  360. I'm your friend.

  361. I'm here for you.

  362. I'm not going anywhere.

  363. God says,

  364. our relationship

  365. hasn't changed

  366. because you ran

  367. the other way

  368. or because life

  369. made you feel

  370. like I had.

  371. It didn't change

  372. our relationship.

  373. I'm your God

  374. and you're my

  375. people,

  376. my children.

  377. Then the God

  378. promised to be with us

  379. is the God

  380. whose arrival

  381. coming to us

  382. is promised

  383. and prepared for.

  384. Remember from our study

  385. of Luke recently

  386. the very words

  387. of these next few verses

  388. being used of John the Baptist?

  389. Verses 3-5,

  390. he came to prepare hearts

  391. to welcome

  392. and receive

  393. the coming Savior.

  394. That's what's meant

  395. by these verses.

  396. A voice cries,

  397. in the wilderness

  398. prepare the way

  399. of the Lord.

  400. Make straight in the desert

  401. a highway for our God.

  402. Every valley

  403. shall be lifted up.

  404. Every mountain

  405. and hill

  406. be made low.

  407. The uneven ground

  408. shall become level.

  409. The rough places

  410. a plain.

  411. What can happen?

  412. What's all the

  413. geographical description

  414. for?

  415. The glory of the Lord

  416. shall be revealed

  417. and all flesh

  418. shall see it together.

  419. The way for God

  420. to come to us

  421. is being prepared

  422. and made smooth.

  423. God's coming to us

  424. is so certain

  425. and so important

  426. that it's been

  427. carefully prepared for

  428. so he can come quickly

  429. and surely

  430. to us.

  431. a smooth

  432. straight path

  433. has been made

  434. so God's glory

  435. can be revealed

  436. in our midst.

  437. God is showing

  438. up

  439. with us.

  440. But how do I know

  441. for sure?

  442. Can I trust

  443. that promise?

  444. The one that it says

  445. the mouth

  446. of the Lord

  447. has spoken

  448. that this is going

  449. to happen.

  450. Will it?

  451. Really?

  452. Because I mean

  453. lots of people

  454. promise things

  455. to me

  456. only to let me down.

  457. I've experienced

  458. that.

  459. Will that's

  460. even some of the

  461. people I've trusted

  462. the most

  463. and that's a large

  464. part of where

  465. my grief

  466. is coming from

  467. this morning.

  468. even the ones

  469. I thought

  470. would always

  471. be here

  472. with me

  473. are not

  474. anymore.

  475. The God

  476. promising

  477. to come

  478. be with you

  479. is the God

  480. whose word

  481. can be trusted

  482. when nothing

  483. and no one

  484. else

  485. can.

  486. It's what Isaiah

  487. tells us in verse 6.

  488. A voice says

  489. cry.

  490. I said what shall I cry?

  491. All flesh is grass

  492. and all its beauty

  493. like the flower

  494. of the field.

  495. The grass

  496. withers

  497. the flower

  498. fades

  499. when the breath

  500. of the Lord

  501. blows on it.

  502. Surely the people

  503. are grass.

  504. The grass

  505. withers

  506. the flower

  507. fades

  508. but different

  509. from all of those

  510. from all those

  511. people

  512. from everything

  513. in creation

  514. the word

  515. of our God

  516. will stand

  517. forever.

  518. People are weak

  519. right?

  520. They may lie.

  521. They may die.

  522. A spouse

  523. may abandon

  524. you.

  525. A best friend

  526. may move

  527. away.

  528. A pastor

  529. may fall

  530. into moral

  531. failure.

  532. Ultimate

  533. trust

  534. can't be placed

  535. in any

  536. person.

  537. So ultimate

  538. comfort

  539. can't come

  540. from any

  541. person.

  542. But

  543. the word

  544. of our God

  545. will stand

  546. forever.

  547. you can

  548. count

  549. on what

  550. he says

  551. he's going

  552. to do

  553. happening

  554. in your

  555. life.

  556. Even when

  557. you feel

  558. everyone else

  559. has left

  560. you

  561. your God

  562. promises

  563. he's moving

  564. towards you.

  565. He's with

  566. you

  567. and for

  568. you.

  569. We got to

  570. keep moving

  571. because it's

  572. just getting

  573. better and I'm

  574. going to keep

  575. talking more.

  576. Here's the

  577. great announcement

  578. of comfort

  579. that God

  580. wants everyone

  581. to hear.

  582. What's it

  583. going to

  584. what's the

  585. whole thing

  586. building towards

  587. God's being

  588. revealed.

  589. He's here.

  590. You can

  591. trust him.

  592. Go up on a

  593. high mountain

  594. Zion.

  595. Herald of

  596. good news.

  597. Lift up your

  598. voice with

  599. strength.

  600. Jerusalem

  601. herald of

  602. good news.

  603. Lift it

  604. up.

  605. Fear not.

  606. Say

  607. what's the

  608. announcement?

  609. Behold

  610. your God.

  611. That's the

  612. big news.

  613. It's short.

  614. It's simple.

  615. God's here.

  616. Ta-da!

  617. That's the

  618. announcement.

  619. commitment.

  620. That's what

  621. Isaiah has to

  622. declare.

  623. The tidings of

  624. comfort and

  625. joy.

  626. Behold your

  627. God.

  628. Behold your

  629. God comes

  630. with might.

  631. And his arm

  632. rules for him.

  633. He's coming.

  634. He's strong and

  635. mighty.

  636. The rest of the

  637. chapter here in

  638. Isaiah is going

  639. to go to great

  640. lengths to talk

  641. about God's

  642. awesome power.

  643. Nothing can

  644. keep him from

  645. us.

  646. He's the

  647. sovereign

  648. creator and

  649. ruler whose

  650. might is

  651. incomparable.

  652. Nothing in

  653. all of creation

  654. could keep him

  655. from us.

  656. But what I want

  657. you to see even

  658. more so,

  659. before I get

  660. distracted by that

  661. more,

  662. before God goes

  663. into all of

  664. that about his

  665. great might,

  666. is that it is

  667. matched only

  668. by his tender

  669. care.

  670. Verse 11.

  671. He will tend

  672. his flock like

  673. a shepherd.

  674. He will gather

  675. the lambs in

  676. his arms.

  677. He will carry

  678. them in his

  679. bosom and

  680. gently lead

  681. those that are

  682. with young.

  683. He will tend

  684. his flock like

  685. a shepherd.

  686. He will gather

  687. the lambs in

  688. his arms.

  689. And we say it

  690. that way because

  691. that's the way we

  692. talk.

  693. He gathers the

  694. lambs in his

  695. arms.

  696. Actually,

  697. in the Hebrew,

  698. the word arms

  699. is the exact same

  700. word from verse

  701. 10.

  702. His arm that

  703. rules for him

  704. is again singular

  705. down here.

  706. He will gather

  707. the lambs in

  708. his arm.

  709. In the same

  710. mighty arm.

  711. God's strong

  712. arm is his

  713. tender arm.

  714. It's the same

  715. mighty arm that

  716. demolishes kings

  717. that also scoops

  718. us up when

  719. we're broken and

  720. holds us close

  721. to his heart and

  722. cares for us.

  723. The arm that

  724. provides ruling

  725. power for the

  726. whole world

  727. provides resting

  728. peace for his

  729. lambs, for his

  730. little children.

  731. It controls the

  732. stars and the

  733. seasons and

  734. carries us at

  735. the same time.

  736. Wow.

  737. You know why?

  738. You know why God

  739. does that?

  740. You know why his

  741. mighty arm can be

  742. his tender arm?

  743. Why do we get

  744. that kind of

  745. attention from the

  746. ruler of the

  747. universe?

  748. You know.

  749. Because he loves

  750. us.

  751. No, no, it's not

  752. possible.

  753. If he loved me,

  754. he wouldn't let...

  755. No, listen.

  756. He loves you

  757. so much

  758. that he would

  759. lead you

  760. into those dark

  761. places partially

  762. so you'll

  763. experience and

  764. know for sure

  765. that he will

  766. never leave

  767. you.

  768. Even there.

  769. He hasn't led

  770. you there so

  771. that you'll prove

  772. to yourself he

  773. doesn't care about

  774. you.

  775. He's walked with

  776. you there so

  777. that you can know

  778. if he's there,

  779. he'll never leave

  780. you anywhere,

  781. that you can

  782. always trust him

  783. to be with you.

  784. He didn't stop

  785. short of death

  786. itself for you.

  787. He's with you

  788. when you don't

  789. feel it.

  790. His heart

  791. treasures his

  792. people personally.

  793. Look back at

  794. verse 10.

  795. The Lord God

  796. comes with might

  797. and his arm

  798. rules for him.

  799. Behold, his

  800. reward is with

  801. him and his

  802. recompense, the

  803. thing he's getting

  804. back, is before

  805. him.

  806. He will tend

  807. his flock like a

  808. shepherd, gather

  809. the lambs in his

  810. arms, carry them

  811. in his bosom, gently

  812. lead those that are

  813. with young.

  814. Who's his reward?

  815. What's his

  816. recompense?

  817. It's his flock,

  818. right?

  819. That he will gather

  820. and carry and not

  821. just as one big

  822. group that he has

  823. gathered to himself

  824. but with intimate

  825. personal care

  826. and gently

  827. lead those

  828. that are

  829. with young.

  830. He is most

  831. tender

  832. with those

  833. who are

  834. most

  835. hurting.

  836. What a good

  837. God.

  838. Most tender

  839. with those

  840. who are

  841. most

  842. hurting

  843. and he knows

  844. them.

  845. If you're thinking

  846. that your grief

  847. might be too

  848. deep,

  849. that your sin

  850. might be too

  851. big,

  852. that your pain

  853. might be too

  854. devastating,

  855. it's not.

  856. You can actually

  857. expect him

  858. in your life

  859. to be

  860. especially

  861. present

  862. there.

  863. Especially

  864. forgiving.

  865. Especially

  866. comforting.

  867. He is most

  868. tender with

  869. those

  870. most

  871. hurting.

  872. You will

  873. experience

  874. over time

  875. what Joseph

  876. learned when

  877. he was

  878. being sold

  879. into Egypt

  880. away from

  881. the promised

  882. land.

  883. What

  884. Corrie ten Boom

  885. articulated

  886. after enduring

  887. a Nazi

  888. prison camp.

  889. There is

  890. no pit

  891. so deep

  892. that he

  893. is not

  894. deeper

  895. still.

  896. Dear ones,

  897. listen.

  898. This is the

  899. good shepherd.

  900. You may have

  901. known some

  902. bad ones.

  903. This is the

  904. good shepherd.

  905. He calls

  906. his sheep

  907. by name

  908. and they

  909. hear his

  910. voice.

  911. Your name

  912. is written

  913. on the

  914. palm of

  915. his hand.

  916. He will

  917. never forget

  918. you.

  919. No matter

  920. how bad

  921. your day

  922. has been,

  923. no matter

  924. how terrible

  925. your life

  926. circumstances

  927. are and

  928. what they're

  929. telling you,

  930. he has not

  931. abandoned you

  932. and he

  933. never will

  934. forget you.

  935. He will

  936. always,

  937. always be

  938. with you

  939. wherever

  940. you are.

  941. Dare I

  942. say even

  943. in Australia.

  944. This last

  945. image here

  946. of God

  947. as the

  948. tender shepherd,

  949. I couldn't

  950. help but

  951. think of

  952. Psalm 23.

  953. Right?

  954. The Lord

  955. is my

  956. shepherd.

  957. And so

  958. even when

  959. I walk

  960. through the

  961. valley of

  962. the shadow

  963. of death,

  964. I will fear

  965. no evil

  966. for you

  967. are what?

  968. With me.

  969. Your rod

  970. and your

  971. staff,

  972. they do

  973. what?

  974. Comfort

  975. me.

  976. Because you're

  977. with me.

  978. Even there,

  979. even in the

  980. darkest places

  981. David has

  982. been,

  983. you're

  984. with me.

  985. And so

  986. I'm

  987. comforted.

  988. That's the

  989. comfort

  990. of Christmas

  991. for our

  992. grieving,

  993. hurting

  994. hearts.

  995. God

  996. is

  997. with us.

  998. Emmanuel.

  999. That's what it

  1000. means.

  1001. Ron read the

  1002. verse,

  1003. the angel

  1004. telling

  1005. Joseph,

  1006. his name

  1007. will be

  1008. Emmanuel.

  1009. God

  1010. with us.

  1011. In the

  1012. person of

  1013. Jesus,

  1014. the baby

  1015. in the

  1016. manger,

  1017. God has

  1018. broken

  1019. into our

  1020. pain

  1021. and endured

  1022. the worst

  1023. of it

  1024. with us

  1025. and for

  1026. us.

  1027. The message

  1028. of Christmas

  1029. is that God

  1030. loves us

  1031. so much

  1032. that nothing

  1033. can keep

  1034. him from

  1035. us.

  1036. He will

  1037. come and

  1038. find us

  1039. wherever we

  1040. are.

  1041. From the

  1042. lowly

  1043. manger

  1044. to the

  1045. sorrowful

  1046. shedding of

  1047. tears at

  1048. the grave

  1049. of a loved

  1050. one,

  1051. to the

  1052. horrific

  1053. pain

  1054. of the

  1055. cross,

  1056. he knows

  1057. our

  1058. grief,

  1059. doesn't he?

  1060. He knows

  1061. our grief.

  1062. That's why

  1063. it's tidings

  1064. of comfort

  1065. and joy

  1066. that in

  1067. Bethlehem

  1068. was born

  1069. the Son

  1070. of God

  1071. by name.

  1072. The God

  1073. of heaven

  1074. was right

  1075. there with

  1076. them,

  1077. the angels

  1078. telling the

  1079. shepherds.

  1080. He's over

  1081. there in

  1082. Bethlehem,

  1083. right over

  1084. there near

  1085. you.

  1086. God

  1087. himself

  1088. in

  1089. Bethlehem.

  1090. Tidings

  1091. of comfort

  1092. and joy.

  1093. You can

  1094. behold

  1095. your God

  1096. with you.

  1097. As we

  1098. prepare to

  1099. come to

  1100. the Lord's

  1101. table

  1102. together,

  1103. let me see

  1104. if I can

  1105. connect

  1106. last week

  1107. and this

  1108. week in

  1109. one really

  1110. important

  1111. way.

  1112. Last week

  1113. we talked

  1114. about our

  1115. hope for

  1116. eternity,

  1117. right?

  1118. that we

  1119. still long

  1120. and await

  1121. the coming

  1122. of Jesus

  1123. again to

  1124. make us

  1125. and all

  1126. creation

  1127. as we

  1128. should be.

  1129. And this

  1130. morning we've

  1131. been talking

  1132. about comfort

  1133. for today

  1134. that God

  1135. is with us

  1136. now.

  1137. But you see

  1138. those two

  1139. things can't

  1140. be separated

  1141. entirely.

  1142. When we

  1143. experience the

  1144. comfort of

  1145. God with

  1146. us, we

  1147. are experiencing

  1148. eternity

  1149. today.

  1150. That's what

  1151. is happening

  1152. this morning.

  1153. Part of the

  1154. comfort we

  1155. receive is

  1156. that the

  1157. God who

  1158. is with

  1159. us today

  1160. has made

  1161. our eternity

  1162. sure.

  1163. Verse two

  1164. says he's

  1165. not just

  1166. going to

  1167. hang around,

  1168. just be

  1169. here with

  1170. us.

  1171. He's bringing

  1172. peace to

  1173. our warfare.

  1174. He's a

  1175. mighty God.

  1176. He's doing

  1177. something for

  1178. us.

  1179. He's forgiving

  1180. our sins

  1181. so that

  1182. he can be

  1183. with us

  1184. forever.

  1185. And we

  1186. get a

  1187. foretaste,

  1188. a glimpse,

  1189. a taste

  1190. of that

  1191. eternal

  1192. reality

  1193. today

  1194. in his

  1195. being

  1196. with

  1197. us.

  1198. The

  1199. communion

  1200. table that

  1201. God sets

  1202. before us

  1203. today is

  1204. a picture

  1205. of the

  1206. wedding feast

  1207. of the

  1208. Lamb that

  1209. will go on

  1210. and we

  1211. will enjoy

  1212. for

  1213. eternity

  1214. with our

  1215. God.

  1216. This is a

  1217. picture of

  1218. that.

  1219. This is a

  1220. rehearsal

  1221. dinner,

  1222. if you

  1223. will,

  1224. where there

  1225. is a

  1226. wedding feast

  1227. to come

  1228. with God.

  1229. Those who

  1230. will be

  1231. seated at

  1232. that table

  1233. at the

  1234. wedding feast

  1235. of the

  1236. Lamb are

  1237. those seated

  1238. at this

  1239. table today

  1240. tasting just

  1241. a little bit

  1242. of eternity

  1243. because that's

  1244. true.

  1245. true.

  1246. It's true

  1247. that Jesus

  1248. has gone

  1249. to the

  1250. cross so

  1251. that our

  1252. sins can

  1253. be forgiven.

  1254. That's an

  1255. eternal reality

  1256. that we taste

  1257. a little bit

  1258. of this

  1259. morning at

  1260. this table

  1261. even while

  1262. we still

  1263. struggle

  1264. with our

  1265. sins.

  1266. There's an

  1267. eternal reality

  1268. that God is

  1269. with us

  1270. forever

  1271. and you

  1272. get to

  1273. taste

  1274. just a

  1275. little bit

  1276. of God

  1277. being with

  1278. you

  1279. today

  1280. even while

  1281. you still

  1282. wait to

  1283. be with

  1284. Him

  1285. forever.

  1286. We already

  1287. sit today

  1288. at this

  1289. table and

  1290. experience

  1291. the comfort

  1292. of God

  1293. with us

  1294. that He

  1295. would come

  1296. and eat

  1297. with us.

  1298. May that

  1299. eternal hope

  1300. and that

  1301. comfort today

  1302. both give us

  1303. great joy

  1304. as we come

  1305. to celebrate

  1306. together.

  1307. These are

  1308. the words of

  1309. institution of

  1310. this supper

  1311. in 1 Corinthians

  1312. 11.

  1313. Paul writes,

  1314. I received

  1315. from the

  1316. Lord what I

  1317. also delivered

  1318. to you

  1319. that the

  1320. Lord Jesus

  1321. on the night

  1322. He was

  1323. betrayed

  1324. took bread

  1325. and when

  1326. He had

  1327. given thanks

  1328. He broke

  1329. it and

  1330. said,

  1331. this is

  1332. my body

  1333. which is

  1334. for you.

  1335. Do this

  1336. in remembrance

  1337. of me.

  1338. In the same

  1339. way also

  1340. He took

  1341. the cup

  1342. after supper

  1343. saying,

  1344. this cup

  1345. is the new

  1346. covenant

  1347. in my blood.

  1348. Do this

  1349. as often

  1350. as you

  1351. drink it

  1352. in remembrance

  1353. of me

  1354. for as often

  1355. as you

  1356. eat this

  1357. bread

  1358. and drink

  1359. the cup

  1360. you proclaim

  1361. the Lord's

  1362. death

  1363. until He

  1364. comes.

  1365. This table

  1366. is the Lord's

  1367. table.

  1368. He has

  1369. said it.

  1370. He comes

  1371. to eat

  1372. with us.

  1373. It's not

  1374. the table

  1375. of Southwood

  1376. or the

  1377. Presbyterian

  1378. church.

  1379. So if you

  1380. know by

  1381. trusting in

  1382. Christ

  1383. the hope

  1384. of eternity

  1385. with God

  1386. come and

  1387. celebrate a

  1388. foretaste

  1389. of that

  1390. this morning

  1391. at this

  1392. table.

  1393. And if you

  1394. don't know

  1395. Jesus,

  1396. if you don't

  1397. know the

  1398. eternal hope

  1399. of having

  1400. your sins

  1401. forgiven,

  1402. if you're

  1403. not willing

  1404. this morning

  1405. to turn

  1406. from your

  1407. sins and

  1408. trust Him

  1409. again,

  1410. believer,

  1411. don't come

  1412. to this

  1413. table.

  1414. I'd encourage

  1415. you not to

  1416. come to

  1417. the thing

  1418. that's

  1419. temporary

  1420. and try

  1421. to have

  1422. a foretaste

  1423. of something

  1424. that's not

  1425. eternally

  1426. true for

  1427. you.

  1428. Rather,

  1429. come to

  1430. Jesus and

  1431. have eternity

  1432. dealt with.

  1433. Then come

  1434. and celebrate

  1435. with us

  1436. something that

  1437. for you

  1438. will then be

  1439. truly a

  1440. foretaste

  1441. of an

  1442. eternal

  1443. reality.

  1444. If you

  1445. trust Jesus,

  1446. if He

  1447. secures your

  1448. eternity,

  1449. your God

  1450. meets with

  1451. you now.

  1452. Come.

  1453. Come and

  1454. meet with

  1455. Him.

  1456. Let's pray.

  1457. Father,

  1458. that you

  1459. would have

  1460. ever moved

  1461. towards us

  1462. is astonishing

  1463. to us.

  1464. We ran

  1465. from you.

  1466. We run

  1467. from you.

  1468. And you've

  1469. set the table

  1470. again this

  1471. morning.

  1472. Day after

  1473. day,

  1474. you invite

  1475. us home.

  1476. Moment by

  1477. moment,

  1478. you remind

  1479. us that

  1480. we're your

  1481. children.

  1482. And we're

  1483. so grateful.

  1484. Might these

  1485. common elements

  1486. have a very

  1487. sacred purpose

  1488. this morning.

  1489. Father,

  1490. in our

  1491. hearts,

  1492. would they

  1493. remind us

  1494. deeply,

  1495. would they

  1496. comfort us

  1497. with the

  1498. knowledge of

  1499. your presence

  1500. and your

  1501. love,

  1502. that you're

  1503. with us

  1504. and that

  1505. you're for

  1506. us always

  1507. because of

  1508. Jesus.

  1509. And we ask

  1510. it in His

  1511. name.

  1512. Amen.

  1513. Amen.
