  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. I'm going to finish reading the Christmas story from the Gospel of Luke that we started

  5. at the beginning of the service this morning.

  6. I am aware that we had a sermon on this passage just a couple of months ago when we celebrated

  7. Christmas in September, but I've just loved more and more as I've studied this, what God

  8. is doing, particularly with the shepherds in this story.

  9. Our text for this morning is verses 8 through 20 of Luke 2.

  10. It's really their story, how Christmas and how God brings a Savior to them and it impacts

  11. their hearts and their lives.

  12. It's a great window into what Christmas means for people like us.

  13. So notice the shepherds particularly as I read and notice how in this one day they move from

  14. fear to joy.

  15. Quickly, but very clearly from fear to joy.

  16. Luke 2 at verse 8.

  17. And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at

  18. night.

  19. An angel of the Lord appeared to them and the glory of the Lord shone around them and they

  20. were terrified.

  21. But the angel said to them, do not be afraid.

  22. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.

  23. Today in the town of David, a Savior has been born to you.

  24. He is Christ the Lord.

  25. This will be a sign to you.

  26. You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.

  27. Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel praising God and saying,

  28. glory to God in the highest and on earth peace to men on whom his favor rests.

  29. When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another,

  30. let's go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened which the Lord has told us about.

  31. So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph and the baby who was lying in the manger.

  32. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child.

  33. And all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them.

  34. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.

  35. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things they had heard and seen,

  36. which were just as they had been told.

  37. Let's pray together.

  38. Father, we thank you again for this familiar story.

  39. We've heard it now many times probably just this Christmas season.

  40. Would you write its truth on our hearts?

  41. Would we know not merely that it really happened,

  42. although that's a great, great joy.

  43. But would we know what that means for us and for our lives.

  44. Father, speak to us this morning, we ask in Jesus' name.

  45. Amen.

  46. We've been talking through the Christmas season about the impact of Christmas on our hearts.

  47. How the incarnation of the Son of God Himself impacts our longing and hope.

  48. Our grief and comfort.

  49. Our apathy and awe.

  50. Last night we talked about turmoil and peace in our hearts.

  51. This morning I want to see briefly, almost as briefly as last night, kids.

  52. Close to a homily.

  53. I want us to see how it transforms our fear.

  54. Now, fear is a pretty broad term, right?

  55. There are lots of things that you can be afraid of.

  56. See if you can think of something that you're afraid of.

  57. When I was growing up, and yeah, still today it's snakes.

  58. I'm so scared of snakes.

  59. Anybody else afraid of snakes?

  60. Tell me I'm not the only person.

  61. Okay, good.

  62. But that's not the kind of fear that I'm talking about this morning.

  63. There are a lot of phobias out there.

  64. A lot of people had a frightful night last night because they struggle with claustrophobia and heard that he was coming.

  65. All right.

  66. All right.

  67. Yeah, wow is right.

  68. It fit into the fear sermon, you know?

  69. My family is leaving right now.

  70. Terrible.

  71. I am definitely not talking about that kind of fear this morning.

  72. The kind of fear I want us to see Christmas address in our hearts is this persistent underlying fear,

  73. this feeling that we have of discomfort in relating to God,

  74. and having a close relationship with Him.

  75. I'll say it this way for our purposes this morning,

  76. that the fear I'm talking about is living with a deep sense that God is distant, dangerous, or dissatisfied.

  77. Remember, I'm talking about a feeling that you have,

  78. not necessarily something you believe intellectually.

  79. You may not believe any of those things about God,

  80. but this is how we relate to Him.

  81. What are the things in our hearts that drive us to relate to God in these ways?

  82. A lot of fear.

  83. Fear is where we find the shepherds in this Christmas story, right?

  84. The angel appears to them, verse 9, and they are terrified.

  85. Some versions say filled with great fear.

  86. Or my favorite one, they were sore afraid, right?

  87. They encounter this heavenly messenger, this representative of God,

  88. and fear is their immediate reaction.

  89. Now, of course, there are very good reasons for that.

  90. I mean, put yourself in their shoes, right?

  91. Here they are, not expecting anything,

  92. and all of a sudden, someone shows up like nothing they have ever seen before.

  93. They didn't know what to expect from or how to relate to an angel.

  94. But I think there's another reason behind their fear,

  95. that shepherds also knew well to be afraid of a divine representative

  96. because shepherds well understood in their culture they were religious outsiders.

  97. They were unclean, unreliable, unavailable for religious matters.

  98. Because of their crazy work schedules and the fact that they were often ceremonially unclean

  99. from touching dead things or from the animals they were around,

  100. they were usually absent from all things churchy, from religious stuff.

  101. They were despised in the community, thought of as thieves and so mistrusted by others

  102. they didn't even qualify as legal witnesses.

  103. Of course they were afraid about what God thought about them, right?

  104. What He might do to them when they encounter Him.

  105. How do you relate to God?

  106. Let's be clear as we start to talk about fear.

  107. There's an appropriate fear of God, isn't there?

  108. The Bible talks about living with the fear of God,

  109. having a reverence and an awe before Him,

  110. before His holiness and His glory bowing before Him and living that way.

  111. It's like Isaiah, when we get a glimpse of God,

  112. we should be reminded of our unworthiness

  113. and that His purity should rightly make us just disintegrate into ashes before Him.

  114. He's that holy and we're that unworthy.

  115. But we also have an inappropriate fear of God in our hearts

  116. that causes us to have unhealthy ways of relating to God.

  117. For some of us, we have like the shepherds,

  118. what I'll call the fear of the unknown.

  119. We keep our distance from God as though He's some distant relative

  120. that we never know what to expect from and we don't really trust.

  121. Having a relationship with God is,

  122. we don't even know what that would be like or feel like.

  123. We've heard some things about Him, but we don't really know Him.

  124. It's why we keep our distance from reading the Bible or praying much.

  125. It seems too close to God.

  126. Exposing my heart to Him just doesn't feel normal or right.

  127. Maybe you can relate to that in your relationship with God.

  128. For others of us, we live with this underlying feeling

  129. that God is a cosmic hall monitor.

  130. That He's always on the lookout for us to slip up.

  131. To fail Him in some small way that He can get us back for

  132. and balance the scales all the time

  133. because that's what He's always doing.

  134. I was volunteering in my daughter's first grade class a few weeks ago

  135. and the teacher left the room for a few minutes

  136. and she left one student in charge of the classroom.

  137. He was in charge of watching all the other students

  138. to make sure no one talked or got out of line

  139. and he stood at the front with a dry erase marker

  140. to write the name of any kid who spoke on the board.

  141. I gotta tell you, I hadn't had that feeling since I was in school.

  142. I was genuinely afraid He was gonna write my name on the board

  143. and she was gonna come back in and think,

  144. well, what did Mr. Spink do while I was gone?

  145. That fear that there's someone watching,

  146. that God sees everything and He's gonna catch you

  147. when you mess up.

  148. That He's gonna get you back.

  149. Sometimes we live as though God is dangerous.

  150. That He's out to get us.

  151. He's really gonna make us feel it if we mess up.

  152. And so we're just tightly wound all the time.

  153. We're playing it safe.

  154. In sports terms, you would call it playing not to lose.

  155. I mean, you've got the lead, right?

  156. You're supposed to be going to heaven.

  157. Just play it safe and don't blow it.

  158. As long as you don't mess it up enough,

  159. you'll make it through and you'll get into heaven in the end.

  160. Play it safe or else.

  161. The final way this shows up in my life

  162. is when serving God begins to feel like a drag.

  163. One more sermon to write this week.

  164. Another conference to attend, really?

  165. Saturday?

  166. I bet they're gonna want me to come back for church

  167. on Christmas Day.

  168. Golly.

  169. Small group?

  170. I did that years ago.

  171. Jobs for life?

  172. Nice idea, but who really has time for that kind of stuff?

  173. I'm exhausted.

  174. I'm worn out.

  175. This unhealthy way of relating to God

  176. is very prevalent among the most committed church members.

  177. And it's hard to see in our lives

  178. because we're doing so many godly things

  179. that it seems like we've got a wonderful relationship with God,

  180. but inside is this gnawing fear

  181. that perhaps we're not doing quite enough.

  182. We haven't done enough to wow God,

  183. to impress Him.

  184. It's like He's an Olympic judge

  185. and He hasn't seen quite enough fantastic stuff

  186. to give us that ten we want.

  187. I mean, we're pretty good,

  188. but we haven't impressed Him yet.

  189. And the result of that is that serving God becomes drudgery

  190. and leads to exhaustion.

  191. I've always got to do more.

  192. Could you see the shepherds feeling some of that kind of fear?

  193. Based on their likely lack of religious awards

  194. and recognition they had received?

  195. An unhealthy fear of God

  196. that leaves me cold and distant from Him.

  197. Often tired.

  198. Rarely joyful.

  199. Does that describe you sometimes?

  200. We all can slip into those feelings.

  201. Even if it's not what we say we believe about God,

  202. that He's distant or dangerous or dissatisfied.

  203. We felt the drudgery,

  204. the lack of joy,

  205. the distance from God lately.

  206. Often that comes from fear.

  207. An aspect of fear in our hearts.

  208. Well, the angel speaks into that terrified bunch of shepherds

  209. the first Christmas

  210. and he says to these very fearful shepherds,

  211. fear not.

  212. Verse 10, right?

  213. The angel said to them,

  214. Do not be afraid.

  215. I bring you good news of great joy

  216. that will be for all the people.

  217. Today in the town of David,

  218. a Savior has been born to you.

  219. He is Christ the Lord.

  220. Fearful people,

  221. fear not.

  222. Something is happening

  223. that must transform your fear.

  224. That makes something different.

  225. Jesus comes to change the way we relate to God.

  226. That these unhealthy, fear-driven approaches

  227. would be replaced with joyful relationship.

  228. Good news of great joy.

  229. See, joy is, as we said with the kids,

  230. not something you can open in a present, right?

  231. Even an empty one, apparently.

  232. It's not happiness.

  233. It's not merely warm feelings

  234. and positive vibes from life's circumstances.

  235. No, joy, biblically, is a deep sense

  236. that God is near,

  237. safe,

  238. and satisfied.

  239. See, joy is relational.

  240. Just like fear.

  241. Having a deep sense of joy

  242. comes from relating differently

  243. to your Creator.

  244. It's a relationship thing.

  245. The message of Christmas,

  246. the announcement of the angels

  247. to the shepherds,

  248. is that there's a change

  249. in their relationship with God.

  250. The angel says it this way.

  251. Look at verse 11 again.

  252. Today in the town of David,

  253. a Savior has been born to you.

  254. Christ the Lord.

  255. God has come to be born

  256. to be your Savior.

  257. Notice what that means

  258. for our relationship with God.

  259. What God has done

  260. to change our relationship with Him.

  261. He's not distant.

  262. He has come near.

  263. This is Emmanuel,

  264. God with us,

  265. who insists on nothing

  266. keeping Him from us.

  267. He wants you to know Him,

  268. to draw close to Him,

  269. to share your heart with Him.

  270. A Savior has been born to you.

  271. God has become man.

  272. He's come near.

  273. Secondly, He's not dangerous,

  274. out to harm you.

  275. He's safe.

  276. He comes to rescue you

  277. and do you good.

  278. I know some of my fellow C.S. Lewis fans

  279. will be bothered

  280. by God being called safe.

  281. He's not safe.

  282. He's good.

  283. He's not a tame lion.

  284. Listen,

  285. what I mean by safe

  286. is that He's safe to trust.

  287. That He loves you

  288. and has your best interest at heart.

  289. John writes in John 3, 17

  290. that God sent His only begotten Son

  291. into the world

  292. not to condemn the world,

  293. not to catch you doing something wrong

  294. so He can get you,

  295. so that He can get back at you

  296. and even things out.

  297. But why?

  298. He sent His Son in the world

  299. to save the world,

  300. to rescue you

  301. in your mess.

  302. He wasn't trying to catch you making it.

  303. He wanted to rescue you

  304. in the midst of it.

  305. That's grace.

  306. That's God's heart toward you.

  307. Finally,

  308. in Jesus,

  309. God

  310. is satisfied.

  311. The need to perform

  312. your way

  313. into His good graces

  314. is over.

  315. Jesus has done it

  316. and He now

  317. dignifies you

  318. with the abundant life

  319. full and free,

  320. finally living the way

  321. God designed you

  322. to live in the first place

  323. without the fear

  324. of His disappointment.

  325. free,

  326. full of joy

  327. knowing your Father

  328. is smiling on you

  329. regardless of your performance

  330. because of Jesus.

  331. Do you hear why

  332. the writers of Scripture

  333. say our salvation

  334. produces

  335. an inexpressible

  336. and glorious joy?

  337. That's the result

  338. of what God does

  339. in fixing our relationship

  340. with Him.

  341. He gives us

  342. an entirely new relationship

  343. from the one

  344. we naturally have.

  345. free and full

  346. relationship with God

  347. of new approach

  348. to all of life.

  349. There's no more

  350. distant relative.

  351. No more cosmic

  352. hall monitor.

  353. No more frowning

  354. Olympic judge.

  355. We have a loving

  356. heavenly Father.

  357. This is why grace

  358. produces joyful obedience

  359. rather than drudgery

  360. in relationship with God.

  361. No more fear

  362. of God's critical eye

  363. having to be appeased

  364. by a perfect performance.

  365. Instead,

  366. delighting in the

  367. light burden

  368. that is ours.

  369. Following a Savior

  370. who has come

  371. and performed

  372. perfectly in our place

  373. brought us into

  374. an entirely new

  375. relationship

  376. with God.

  377. That's what a Savior

  378. means.

  379. What it would have meant

  380. to the shepherds.

  381. Look at the change

  382. they experience

  383. when they see

  384. the Savior.

  385. Verse 17.

  386. When they'd seen Him

  387. they spread the word

  388. concerning what had

  389. been told them

  390. about this child

  391. and all who heard it

  392. were amazed

  393. at what the shepherds

  394. said to them.

  395. Verse 20.

  396. The shepherds returned

  397. glorifying and

  398. praising God

  399. for all the things

  400. they'd heard and seen

  401. which were just

  402. as they had been told.

  403. How did they go

  404. from fearful

  405. outcasts

  406. to those who are

  407. praising and

  408. rejoicing in God

  409. and telling everybody

  410. about Him

  411. and talking with people

  412. about this God.

  413. What changed

  414. the shepherds?

  415. It was that they heard

  416. and saw

  417. a Savior.

  418. It's that simple.

  419. That's all that happens

  420. in between.

  421. They hear there's a Savior

  422. they go see the Savior

  423. and they're changed.

  424. They let go of their fear.

  425. They don't cower

  426. before God anymore.

  427. Now they praise Him

  428. and rejoice

  429. in Him.

  430. This change

  431. is portrayed

  432. subtly

  433. but beautifully

  434. in a TV special

  435. you may have seen

  436. recently

  437. called

  438. Charlie Brown's

  439. Christmas.

  440. If you're not

  441. a Peanuts aficionado

  442. Linus

  443. is a character.

  444. Linus

  445. is known

  446. for always

  447. having his blanket

  448. with him.

  449. He's somewhat

  450. of a fearful

  451. character

  452. in the comic.

  453. he's not able

  454. to go anywhere

  455. without that

  456. security blanket.

  457. Recently social media

  458. has noticed

  459. something about

  460. Linus

  461. and his blanket

  462. on this special.

  463. I want to show you

  464. a short clip.

  465. Watch the blue blanket

  466. carefully.

  467. Isn't there anyone

  468. who knows

  469. what Christmas

  470. is all about?

  471. Sure Charlie Brown

  472. I can tell you

  473. what Christmas

  474. is all about.

  475. Lights please.

  476. And there were

  477. in the same country

  478. shepherds

  479. abiding in the field

  480. keeping watch

  481. over their flock

  482. by night

  483. and lo

  484. the angel

  485. of the Lord

  486. came upon them

  487. and the glory

  488. of the Lord

  489. shone round about them

  490. and they were

  491. sore afraid

  492. and the angel

  493. said unto them

  494. fear not

  495. for behold

  496. I bring you

  497. tidings of great joy

  498. which shall be

  499. to all people

  500. for unto you

  501. is born this day

  502. in the city of David

  503. a savior

  504. which is Christ the Lord

  505. and this shall be

  506. a sign unto you

  507. you shall find

  508. the babe wrapped

  509. in swaddling clothes

  510. lying in a manger

  511. and suddenly

  512. there was with the angel

  513. a multitude

  514. of the heavenly host

  515. praising God

  516. and saying

  517. glory to God

  518. in the highest

  519. and on earth

  520. peace

  521. good will toward men

  522. that's what Christmas

  523. is all about

  524. Charlie Brown

  525. that's what Christmas

  526. is all about

  527. I know you know

  528. what Christmas

  529. is all about

  530. did you notice

  531. the blanket

  532. did you notice

  533. when he says

  534. do not fear

  535. what he's able

  536. to let go of

  537. what the angels

  538. have announced

  539. what the shepherds

  540. witnessed

  541. is something

  542. that allows us

  543. to let go

  544. of our fears

  545. you may know that

  546. but have you actually

  547. dropped

  548. your blanket

  549. have you let go

  550. of other things

  551. that you'd find

  552. security in

  553. in order to cling

  554. to Jesus

  555. has the truth

  556. the angels announced

  557. enabled you

  558. to let go

  559. of fearful

  560. ways of

  561. relating to God

  562. and experience

  563. the deep joy

  564. of being

  565. his beloved

  566. child

  567. what does it mean

  568. to you

  569. to have a savior

  570. that's the question

  571. I want you to

  572. consider

  573. as we close

  574. this morning

  575. what does a savior

  576. change

  577. in your

  578. heart

  579. and life

  580. we're celebrating

  581. him today

  582. right

  583. what difference

  584. does it make

  585. for you

  586. I really want you

  587. to write something

  588. or something's

  589. down

  590. on your bulletin

  591. what does a savior

  592. mean

  593. to you

  594. what's the difference

  595. in your life

  596. I'll prime the pump

  597. for you

  598. while you're

  599. thinking

  600. it's good news

  601. of great joy

  602. for all people

  603. so that includes

  604. you and me

  605. right

  606. changes something

  607. for us

  608. so the fact

  609. that you have

  610. a savior

  611. means all

  612. these things

  613. it means you

  614. will never

  615. be completely

  616. alone

  617. because God

  618. is with us

  619. you will never

  620. face the fires

  621. of hell

  622. for your sin

  623. never

  624. it means no

  625. failure in your

  626. life will

  627. cost you

  628. God's

  629. smile

  630. no sin

  631. you commit

  632. can make

  633. God stop

  634. loving you

  635. it means

  636. there's nothing

  637. you lack

  638. for being

  639. welcomed

  640. into God's

  641. family

  642. it means

  643. you're assured

  644. of life

  645. full and free

  646. the way God

  647. created and

  648. designed you

  649. to live

  650. can you believe

  651. that all of

  652. those things

  653. and many

  654. many more

  655. are true

  656. all of that

  657. because of

  658. Christmas

  659. because a savior

  660. has been born

  661. born to you

  662. write something

  663. in your own

  664. words

  665. what difference

  666. does it make

  667. in your life

  668. that you

  669. have a savior

  670. I don't know

  671. how you feel

  672. this morning

  673. but I can

  674. assure you

  675. you're not

  676. worse off

  677. or more

  678. fearful

  679. than those

  680. shepherds

  681. on the hillside

  682. that night

  683. who started

  684. fearful

  685. and ended

  686. joyful

  687. all because

  688. of seeing

  689. Jesus

  690. Jesus

  691. can do that

  692. for you

  693. too

  694. and you can

  695. know the joy

  696. of life

  697. lived with

  698. nothing

  699. to lose

  700. nothing to

  701. protect

  702. nothing to

  703. hide

  704. nothing to

  705. fear

  706. because you're

  707. a beloved

  708. child of the

  709. king of the

  710. universe

  711. dancing

  712. and preaching

  713. and playing

  714. and sacrificing

  715. and serving

  716. all freely

  717. and knowing

  718. that he's

  719. smiling

  720. having the

  721. comfort of

  722. your father's

  723. smile

  724. and his

  725. perfect care

  726. for you

  727. if that were

  728. really true

  729. what might

  730. you do

  731. if you could

  732. really live

  733. like that

  734. what might

  735. you try

  736. if you had

  737. that kind

  738. of comfort

  739. and joy

  740. there's

  741. Christmas dinner

  742. conversation

  743. for you

  744. kids let me

  745. say it this

  746. way to you

  747. you can write

  748. what having

  749. a savior

  750. means to you

  751. in your own

  752. words

  753. doesn't have

  754. to be long

  755. Christmas

  756. Jesus your

  757. savior being

  758. born for

  759. you means

  760. God loves

  761. you even

  762. when you have

  763. a bad day

  764. even when

  765. you're bad

  766. having a

  767. savior means

  768. you never

  769. ever have

  770. to be scared

  771. of God

  772. he loves

  773. you

  774. you can

  775. trust him

  776. kids having

  777. a savior

  778. means that

  779. that no matter

  780. how great a day

  781. it is and this

  782. might be a

  783. great day

  784. for many of you

  785. that your best

  786. day is always

  787. ahead of you

  788. there's always

  789. a best day

  790. coming in the

  791. future when

  792. when God makes

  793. everything right

  794. the way it

  795. should be

  796. that's something

  797. to be excited

  798. about

  799. no matter what

  800. gifts you get

  801. or don't get

  802. today

  803. you have an

  804. incredible gift

  805. a savior

  806. who's been

  807. born to you

  808. a wonderful

  809. wonderful savior

  810. amen

  811. let's pray

  812. father thank you

  813. for that gift

  814. thank you for

  815. our savior

  816. may our

  817. hearts

  818. rejoice

  819. that we

  820. have a

  821. father

  822. that we

  823. live in his

  824. presence and

  825. under his

  826. smile

  827. and that that

  828. will never

  829. change

  830. we know

  831. that's only

  832. possible not

  833. because of

  834. who we

  835. are but

  836. because of

  837. who Jesus

  838. is and

  839. how much he

  840. loves us

  841. give us great

  842. joy in that

  843. today and

  844. always we

  845. ask in his

  846. name

  847. amen
