  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. This morning we're going to look at Philippians chapter 3.

    Philippians 3 chapter mention

  5. I'd like to read the first three, the first 16 verses.

  6. Philippians 3, beginning at verse 1, and I'll read down through verse 16.

  7. Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord.

  8. To write the same things to you is no trouble to me and is safe for you.

  9. Look out for the dogs.

  10. Look out for the evildoers.

  11. Look out for those who mutilate the flesh.

  12. For we are the circumcision who worship by the Spirit of God and glory in Christ Jesus and put no confidence in the flesh.

  13. Though I myself have reason for confidence in the flesh also.

  14. If anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more.

  15. As to the law, a Pharisee.

  16. As to zeal, a persecutor of the church.

  17. And as to righteousness under the law, blameless.

  18. But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ.

  19. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.

  20. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish.

  21. In order that I may gain Christ and be found in him.

  22. Not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law.

  23. But that which comes through faith in Christ.

  24. The righteousness from God that depends on faith.

  25. That I may know him and the power of his resurrection.

  26. And may share his sufferings.

  27. Becoming like him in his death.

  28. That by any means possible, I may attain the resurrection from the dead.

  29. Not that I've already obtained this or am already perfect.

  30. But I press on to make it my own.

  31. Because Christ Jesus has made me his own.

  32. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own.

  33. But one thing I do.

  34. Forgetting what lies behind.

  35. And straining forward to what lies ahead.

  36. I press on towards the goal.

  37. For the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

  38. Let those of us who are mature think this way.

  39. And if anything you think otherwise.

  40. God will reveal that also to you.

  41. Only let us hold true to what we have attained.

  42. One of these days my voice will clear.

  43. At least in theory.

  44. You know, this is the time of year where.

  45. And I've been, you see it.

  46. I've been seeing it on social media.

  47. And seeing it all over the place.

  48. It's just that time of year where we all kind of want to take stock.

  49. Of, you know, looking back on the last year.

  50. How's it gone?

  51. And thinking ahead to the new year.

  52. You know, and this is why at this time of year.

  53. We make New Year's resolutions.

  54. We don't make Fourth of July resolutions.

  55. We make New Year's.

  56. Because it's the end of the old beginning of something new.

  57. And I know that there's a lot of different thoughts and ideas about resolutions.

  58. Some people just don't like to make resolutions.

  59. You know, some people do every year.

  60. Some people don't think much of them.

  61. Because it seems almost like an exercise in futility.

  62. And I use that word exercise.

  63. Because it's probably one of those very common themes in some of our resolutions.

  64. You know, it's the season that if you watch television, you're going to see.

  65. Really, you've already seen it.

  66. The exercise machine advertisements are going to multiply.

  67. All the diet programs are going to multiply.

  68. And you're going to see that heavy on TV.

  69. And then what that's going to do, it's going to last for a little bit.

  70. But it's actually going to supply eBay with a lot of new merchandise come February.

  71. Because, you know, it just doesn't get us very far.

  72. The self-help section in the bookstore and on Amazon is by far the most popular.

  73. But again, where does it get us?

  74. You know, regardless of hair color, exercise, makeup, diets, or spandex if the diets don't work.

  75. Or hair transplants, self-management techniques, or other self-help.

  76. All that does for most of us is just increase our frustration with life.

  77. And so, New Year's resolutions are really a waste of time.

  78. And besides, we're grace people.

  79. God loves us unconditionally.

  80. And he accepts us exactly the way we are.

  81. So, here you have it.

  82. That said, you know, if I don't have any resolve to be different,

  83. maybe I've gotten too content with this broken self that I am.

  84. You know, maybe I've come to the point where I've got this very unhealthy sense of contentment

  85. for sinful patterns in my life.

  86. Ways that I damage relationships and other wasteful things.

  87. Yes, I am to accept myself fully as I am, as the broken self that I am.

  88. That is very true.

  89. But yet, am I to be content?

  90. The Bible says, be content in all circumstances.

  91. But does that mean that I have to be content

  92. in all of this junk that still seems to run rampant through my life?

  93. I think the gospel calls me to something different.

  94. Yes, the gospel says it calls me just as I am.

  95. And I am embraced just as I am.

  96. But the gospel comes never to leave me as I am.

  97. The gospel comes to take me somewhere.

  98. And God, because what Christ has come to do in his work of redemption

  99. is to make all things new and all things includes me.

  100. And he's not waiting until the last day when he comes again

  101. and I enter into heaven.

  102. The process has begun.

  103. And it's continuing.

  104. And so this is his desire for me.

  105. And I love in this passage how Paul marries two glorious concepts.

  106. He marries this idea of my full acceptance and embracing of the Father

  107. through the work of Christ alone.

  108. That I am righteous in Christ.

  109. He takes that concept and then weds it with a passion

  110. to be something different.

  111. Because you see, in the first part of this chapter,

  112. there's a lot of passive ideas, passive concepts

  113. where he wants to be found in the righteousness of Christ.

  114. Not because of my works, but I want to be found in Christ.

  115. But then as soon as this, in his next breath,

  116. he says, I press on.

  117. And so how does all this work?

  118. Well, this is what I want us to look at

  119. in this passage this morning.

  120. And so I want us to see a couple of things.

  121. First, we are going to look at this reality of Christ.

  122. The reality of who we are because of the work of Christ alone.

  123. But then secondly, we're going to look at

  124. then the resulting call to pursue Christ.

  125. And then finally after that, we're going to look at

  126. at least I'm going to give you a window

  127. into some personal resolutions

  128. that I think flow from these words of Paul.

  129. First, let's look at the reality of being in Christ.

  130. You know, in the first six verses of this chapter,

  131. I really, this is one of my favorite chapters

  132. in all of Scripture.

  133. Because in these first six verses,

  134. what Paul does, he first gives us a warning

  135. about some false gospels.

  136. In one of those false gospels,

  137. the primary one is putting confidence in the flesh.

  138. And that is simply that I'm going to trust me

  139. to make everything happen.

  140. I'm going to trust me to be good enough.

  141. I'm going to trust me to gain my acceptance before God.

  142. And he calls those who promote such a gospel

  143. dogs.

  144. And he's not using dogs the way we use them,

  145. the word.

  146. We use the word dogs as people.

  147. He's talking about mongrels.

  148. These are beasts that are hated.

  149. So we're not talking about your little pet schnauzer.

  150. This is a junkyard dog who's vicious

  151. and will devour you.

  152. But then he goes through, starting in verse four,

  153. then he goes through his own testimony

  154. of how he used to put confidence in the flesh.

  155. And he said, I did it better than anybody.

  156. He said, I've got the pedigree.

  157. I was a Hebrew of Hebrews.

  158. I was no Johnny-come-lately convert.

  159. I was, I can trace my lineage

  160. all the way back to the tribe of Benjamin.

  161. He said, I was, I was zealous for the faith.

  162. But then he makes this statement and he says,

  163. as to the righteousness which is in the law,

  164. blameless.

  165. How many of you could say that about yourself?

  166. Blameless?

  167. Not me.

  168. Paul was the goodest of the good.

  169. But then he makes this amazing statement.

  170. He said he found something else.

  171. In all of this other stuff,

  172. he said, I counted his loss

  173. because of the surpassing value

  174. of knowing Christ.

  175. And what was it he found in Christ?

  176. He found righteousness

  177. or rightness.

  178. He was right.

  179. He was good.

  180. He was perfect.

  181. He was beautiful.

  182. He was as he should be.

  183. That's righteousness.

  184. And he found that in Christ.

  185. Not in his own works.

  186. Not in what he did.

  187. He found it through faith.

  188. It was passive.

  189. It was something he received.

  190. That he was in Christ right.

  191. It means he was good enough.

  192. It means he was beautiful enough.

  193. It means he was perfect enough

  194. that he would have God's full acceptance,

  195. approval, and delight.

  196. Wow.

  197. Wow.

  198. You know what?

  199. I'm not right.

  200. And I'm not.

  201. Just in and of myself.

  202. And I think this is the common experience

  203. for all of us.

  204. We feel guilty.

  205. When we do things

  206. or when we don't do things,

  207. when we fail

  208. to keep up that standard,

  209. we know.

  210. We sense it down inside.

  211. We're not right.

  212. But it's not just that.

  213. There's something else.

  214. It's not just guilt

  215. that makes us feel not right.

  216. It's shame.

  217. Because you go and look in the mirror

  218. in the mornings

  219. and you,

  220. what you see

  221. looking back at you

  222. is not right.

  223. You see all the flaws,

  224. all the mistakes,

  225. places where there used to be hair

  226. and now you see places

  227. where there is hair

  228. where there shouldn't be.

  229. And you,

  230. you see parts sagging out

  231. and,

  232. but that's just the physical.

  233. And we work hard

  234. at hiding all of that.

  235. But it's also that behavior,

  236. the words that we say,

  237. the things that we do,

  238. we're just not right.

  239. And we know it.

  240. So what do we do with that?

  241. Well,

  242. our options are

  243. basically two.

  244. The first one is

  245. you fix it yourself.

  246. You become right.

  247. You change your behavior

  248. to be good.

  249. You fix all the flaws

  250. so that you can be beautiful.

  251. Or you just try to

  252. cover them over

  253. and deny that they're there.

  254. It's kind of the

  255. Photoshop approach

  256. to life.

  257. that at least

  258. I can make a good impression

  259. out there

  260. for everyone else

  261. to see.

  262. I can fix myself

  263. well enough

  264. that when people

  265. look at me,

  266. they'll approve

  267. and accept me.

  268. But we still know

  269. the truth.

  270. It doesn't get us

  271. very far.

  272. It doesn't get us

  273. very far.

  274. There's another option.

  275. You can get it

  276. from somebody else.

  277. And this is what Paul did.

  278. As good as he was

  279. and as well as he did,

  280. he could not be good enough.

  281. He could not stand

  282. before God

  283. and say,

  284. I've done enough.

  285. But what he could do

  286. is he could stand

  287. before God

  288. with what he received.

  289. You see,

  290. he was clothed

  291. with rightness.

  292. It was kind of like

  293. being covered

  294. with all of your

  295. dirt and your filth

  296. and your dirty clothes

  297. and ragged pants

  298. and shirt.

  299. All of that is covered

  300. with glorious,

  301. beautiful wedding garments

  302. that you didn't make,

  303. you didn't purchase,

  304. were given to you

  305. and were put on you

  306. by another.

  307. And now,

  308. in those garments,

  309. we're beautiful.

  310. In that rightness,

  311. I am beautiful.

  312. It's amazing, isn't it?

  313. It's amazing, isn't it?

  314. It's amazing.

  315. It's amazing.

  316. It's amazing.

  317. It's amazing.

  318. That's who we are

  319. in Christ.

  320. That's what we get

  321. from Christ

  322. and we receive it

  323. by faith.

  324. That is the gift,

  325. the surpassing value

  326. of knowing Christ

  327. that I can quit working.

  328. I can quit covering up.

  329. I can just enjoy

  330. the pleasure

  331. and delight

  332. and approval

  333. and acceptance

  334. of this holy God.

  335. And that's the gospel.

  336. It has nothing to do

  337. with what we do.

  338. It has nothing to do

  339. with what we can earn.

  340. It's everything to do

  341. with Christ.

  342. Coming to Christ means

  343. I simply quit

  344. this self-centered,

  345. self-focused,

  346. self-sufficient,

  347. self-justification.

  348. And I rest

  349. in a righteousness

  350. which is given to me

  351. that is enough

  352. and will always be enough.

  353. And I'll never be,

  354. when I get to heaven

  355. and stand before Christ,

  356. I will not then

  357. be more righteous

  358. than I am right now.

  359. And it's all because

  360. of Christ.

  361. Think about that.

  362. Every time I think about this,

  363. it just,

  364. it blows me away

  365. because when I look back

  366. at all my failure,

  367. all of the crud

  368. that I can see,

  369. especially you take stock

  370. and look back

  371. over a whole year

  372. and there's plenty there.

  373. But God,

  374. the Holy One,

  375. looks upon me

  376. with delight.

  377. He's not.

  378. He's pleased.

  379. because of Christ.

  380. And we have to get this.

  381. This cannot be diluted.

  382. If we don't get this,

  383. we miss everything.

  384. I stand before God

  385. and I am pleasing to him

  386. because someone else

  387. was righteous

  388. and gave that credit to me.

  389. Now,

  390. that is glorious.

  391. But Paul doesn't stop there.

  392. He moves on.

  393. That truth,

  394. that wonderful theology

  395. does something to Paul.

  396. It doesn't make him

  397. just sit back on his laurels

  398. and do nothing.

  399. It drives him.

  400. It energizes him

  401. for a whole new work,

  402. a whole new pursuit.

  403. And it's not something

  404. that's from self-effort.

  405. It's something else

  406. inside of him

  407. that is now driving him.

  408. And I think,

  409. I want to call our attention,

  410. especially as we look now

  411. in verses 12

  412. down through verse 16.

  413. There's four things

  414. I want us to see

  415. about what is now

  416. at work in Paul.

  417. And the first thing is

  418. there's a new calling.

  419. Look what he says.

  420. He talks about this

  421. upward call

  422. of God

  423. which is in Christ Jesus.

  424. I am called

  425. to something new.

  426. He is called

  427. out of the old.

  428. But he's called

  429. to something.

  430. And this is where

  431. I may have used

  432. this illustration before

  433. but I love fairy tales

  434. because they reflect

  435. realities of,

  436. I think,

  437. even some spiritual realities,

  438. some hopes

  439. that we have.

  440. And one of my favorite

  441. in this is Cinderella.

  442. Cinderella lived

  443. in the ash heap

  444. with these three ugly

  445. brutal stepsisters.

  446. But she was called

  447. to something new.

  448. She was called

  449. out of that world.

  450. She was now called

  451. to live in the palace.

  452. She was called

  453. to be the bride

  454. of the prince himself.

  455. To have nothing more

  456. to do

  457. with the ash bin.

  458. It says,

  459. and in Christ

  460. I am now the bride.

  461. I am more beautiful

  462. than Cinderella

  463. ever dreamed of.

  464. Because I'm with the prince.

  465. I am called

  466. to be like him.

  467. I am called

  468. to serve him.

  469. I am called

  470. to reflect his glory.

  471. And let me tell you something.

  472. This is not laborious.

  473. If you would have

  474. asked Cinderella,

  475. what do you want to do?

  476. She says,

  477. I want to be with him.

  478. Because he's totally

  479. changed my life.

  480. So there's this new calling

  481. out of the old

  482. to glory.

  483. Because we are now

  484. wedded

  485. to

  486. the glorious

  487. prince.

  488. You know,

  489. I experienced this somewhat

  490. when I got married

  491. to my wife,

  492. my bride,

  493. a little over

  494. 34 years ago.

  495. 34 and a half years ago.

  496. Because I know

  497. for,

  498. when you think about

  499. weddings for so many,

  500. you have

  501. the night before

  502. the wedding,

  503. these bachelor parties

  504. and so forth.

  505. And they're almost

  506. kind of like wakes.

  507. It's kind of a last

  508. ditch

  509. thrill session

  510. before

  511. you take on

  512. the bondage

  513. of marriage.

  514. So it's this,

  515. we're going to celebrate,

  516. you know,

  517. these last moments

  518. of freedom.

  519. We're going to have fun

  520. because that's all

  521. going to end tomorrow.

  522. I'm sorry.

  523. I never had one of those.

  524. And I didn't want one.

  525. Because I wanted to be

  526. with her.

  527. There was no,

  528. this was no labor.

  529. This is no bondage.

  530. This was a fulfillment

  531. of the dreams

  532. of my life.

  533. life.

  534. And it still is.

  535. And so,

  536. for me

  537. to give myself

  538. to her

  539. alone

  540. and now say

  541. no

  542. to everyone

  543. else,

  544. to say

  545. no

  546. to just

  547. a life

  548. of

  549. self-focus,

  550. I'm not

  551. complaining.

  552. Because it's the

  553. great joy

  554. of my life.

  555. And when we

  556. come to Christ,

  557. this is the call

  558. to a glorious

  559. wedding

  560. where our

  561. prince

  562. is the fulfillment

  563. of every desire.

  564. Secondly,

  565. there is this

  566. new focus.

  567. Paul says

  568. in verse 13,

  569. he says,

  570. forgetting what

  571. lies behind

  572. and straining

  573. forward

  574. to what lies

  575. ahead.

  576. I love these

  577. verbs.

  578. As you read

  579. through this,

  580. look at the verbs.

  581. He's straining.

  582. He's not just

  583. leaning.

  584. He's not just

  585. looking.

  586. He's straining.

  587. You know,

  588. this is

  589. how he

  590. describes

  591. his new

  592. calling,

  593. this upward

  594. call.

  595. His focus

  596. is no longer

  597. on the past,

  598. but it's

  599. all on

  600. what's to

  601. come.

  602. And it's

  603. the past,

  604. you know,

  605. we can think

  606. of it in two

  607. different ways.

  608. That past

  609. is,

  610. okay,

  611. I no longer

  612. look on the

  613. negative.

  614. I no longer

  615. look on

  616. the bad

  617. and all

  618. of that

  619. that's behind

  620. me.

  621. It's done.

  622. It's forgiven.

  623. But there's

  624. something else

  625. I turn away

  626. from.

  627. I don't look

  628. on my

  629. successes

  630. either.

  631. You know,

  632. I can go

  633. back in

  634. time and

  635. relive

  636. those glorious

  637. moments and

  638. you have them

  639. too.

  640. Those moments

  641. where you

  642. experience just

  643. a taste of

  644. glory.

  645. Like for me,

  646. it was that

  647. backwards,

  648. over the

  649. top,

  650. catch the

  651. ball in

  652. the air,

  653. slam dunk,

  654. goal on

  655. a foosball

  656. table.

  657. The very

  658. last shot I

  659. took as I

  660. was leaving

  661. World Harvest

  662. Mission,

  663. I left

  664. in glory.

  665. And I can

  666. relive that

  667. and obviously

  668. I do.

  669. I do.

  670. I do.

  671. I do.

  672. I do.

  673. I do.

  674. It doesn't

  675. count for

  676. anything anymore

  677. because I've

  678. got something

  679. else.

  680. The past,

  681. the negative

  682. is resolved

  683. in Christ.

  684. And even

  685. what was

  686. positive is

  687. swallowed up

  688. in righteousness

  689. which is

  690. far,

  691. far more

  692. profitable

  693. and glorious.

  694. So all

  695. of that,

  696. all that I

  697. would count

  698. as valuable,

  699. it's nothing

  700. now because

  701. I'm looking

  702. forward to

  703. what I have

  704. in Christ.

  705. That is my

  706. goal.

  707. That is my

  708. identity.

  709. And to

  710. that I

  711. strain.

  712. thirdly,

  713. there's a

  714. new passion

  715. in Paul.

  716. In these

  717. verses,

  718. twice he

  719. uses the

  720. same word.

  721. He says,

  722. I press

  723. on.

  724. And that

  725. word is a

  726. strong word.

  727. It's a little

  728. stronger than

  729. what's communicated

  730. in English.

  731. And especially

  732. since this is

  733. a great football

  734. weekend,

  735. this is,

  736. the way I

  737. think of this

  738. word is that

  739. that pressing

  740. on is kind

  741. of the gleam

  742. in the eye

  743. of a defensive

  744. end with a

  745. quarterback in

  746. his sight.

  747. And there's

  748. nothing going to

  749. stop him from

  750. getting there.

  751. That is the

  752. passion now that

  753. is driving Paul

  754. to press on.

  755. He has one

  756. thing in mind.

  757. Notice there

  758. again he says,

  759. one thing I

  760. do.

  761. Just one.

  762. And basically

  763. this is a new

  764. love.

  765. It's a new

  766. heart passion.

  767. And that's

  768. where Paul's

  769. getting his

  770. energy.

  771. And that's

  772. what's driving

  773. him.

  774. We are driven

  775. by our loves.

  776. We're not

  777. driven by our

  778. thoughts,

  779. but the things

  780. that we love

  781. drive us.

  782. And Paul now

  783. had one

  784. love.

  785. fourthly,

  786. there's new

  787. resources.

  788. And you have

  789. to step back

  790. to verse 10.

  791. He says,

  792. I want to

  793. know him

  794. and the

  795. power of

  796. his resurrection.

  797. And in

  798. that power,

  799. that's the

  800. same power

  801. now working

  802. in Paul

  803. that raised

  804. Christ from

  805. the dead.

  806. And a lot

  807. of times we

  808. think that we

  809. are beyond

  810. change.

  811. I have tried

  812. to change

  813. year after

  814. year,

  815. month after

  816. month.

  817. I'm getting

  818. nowhere.

  819. I can't

  820. do it,

  821. but the

  822. Holy Spirit

  823. himself,

  824. the one

  825. who brought

  826. Christ up

  827. from the

  828. dead,

  829. now dwells

  830. in me,

  831. and I

  832. think I

  833. can't

  834. change.

  835. See,

  836. for Paul,

  837. he knew

  838. it wasn't

  839. up to

  840. him.

  841. But he

  842. had a

  843. resource

  844. that now

  845. he could

  846. turn to.

  847. In all

  848. of these

  849. things,

  850. this new

  851. calling,

  852. this new

  853. focus,

  854. new passion,

  855. in this new

  856. resource,

  857. it's not just

  858. true of Paul.

  859. It's true of

  860. every one of

  861. us in

  862. Christ.

  863. So,

  864. what does

  865. it mean?

  866. What does

  867. this mean

  868. for me?

  869. I'll try

  870. to go

  871. through

  872. these

  873. quickly.

  874. But that's

  875. probably one

  876. resolution I

  877. won't

  878. fulfill.

  879. First,

  880. there's three

  881. things.

  882. I need to

  883. develop a

  884. healthier

  885. discontentment.

  886. I need to

  887. develop a

  888. healthier

  889. discontentment

  890. with myself,

  891. with where

  892. I am,

  893. and what

  894. I'm doing.

  895. I need to

  896. more fully

  897. comprehend

  898. the things

  899. that I

  900. love,

  901. and the

  902. things that I

  903. love that

  904. are worthless

  905. and cheap.

  906. Paul says

  907. in verse

  908. eight,

  909. he says,

  910. I count

  911. everything as

  912. a loss

  913. because of

  914. the surpassing

  915. value of

  916. knowing Christ

  917. Jesus,

  918. my Lord.

  919. He said,

  920. for his

  921. sake I have

  922. suffered the

  923. loss of

  924. all things

  925. and count

  926. them as

  927. rubbish.

  928. That word

  929. rubbish is a

  930. four-letter word.

  931. And it

  932. describes

  933. something you

  934. would flush

  935. down a

  936. toilet.

  937. And that's

  938. the value

  939. he gives

  940. all of his

  941. past

  942. accomplishments.

  943. And there

  944. are a lot

  945. of things

  946. that I am

  947. pursuing in

  948. my life

  949. that smell

  950. bad.

  951. And I

  952. need to

  953. know.

  954. This last

  955. fall, I'm

  956. given some

  957. insight into

  958. some of

  959. these things.

  960. One of the

  961. things the

  962. Lord has

  963. begun to

  964. show me,

  965. well, not

  966. show me for

  967. the first

  968. time, this

  969. is a long

  970. running issue

  971. with me,

  972. is that I

  973. can be

  974. very,

  975. very,

  976. very

  977. arrogant.

  978. To the

  979. point which

  980. I will,

  981. any group

  982. of people,

  983. in order for

  984. me to get

  985. attention and

  986. recognition and

  987. acknowledgement,

  988. even just by

  989. way of a few

  990. laughs, I'll

  991. throw you under

  992. the bus.

  993. I'll put you

  994. down, I'll

  995. belittle you,

  996. and I'm not

  997. proud of that.

  998. I hate it.

  999. I grieve

  1000. over it.

  1001. But that

  1002. revelation is

  1003. a gift.

  1004. Because what he's

  1005. showing me is

  1006. that there's this

  1007. value that I

  1008. have is

  1009. rubbish.

  1010. And we

  1011. need to get

  1012. rid of it.

  1013. And so I

  1014. think I need

  1015. more of this.

  1016. How and

  1017. when we're

  1018. going to do

  1019. this?

  1020. Well, one of

  1021. the things that I

1022. need to do is a

  1023. practice that I

  1024. did some years

  1025. ago.

  1026. I need to have

  1027. people praying

  1028. for me.

  1029. Some of you

  1030. think in your

  1031. resolutions you

  1032. need to start

  1033. praying more.

  1034. Well, that

  1035. might be, and

  1036. we'll talk about

  1037. that in a

  1038. second, but I

  1039. need people

  1040. praying for me.

  1041. I need to go

  1042. out and enlist a

  1043. few people who

  1044. will faithfully

  1045. pray that God

  1046. would make me

  1047. very, very

  1048. discontent with

  1049. who I am until

  1050. I get to the

  1051. perfection of

  1052. Christ.

  1053. Second thing, I

  1054. need to develop a

  1055. healthier obsession.

  1056. And that

  1057. obsession needs to

  1058. be with Jesus.

  1059. you know, what I

  1060. find is that I'm

  1061. willing, you

  1062. know, I fill my

  1063. life with so many

  1064. things, so many

  1065. worthless things.

  1066. I mean, they're

  1067. not bad in

  1068. themselves, but

  1069. they're just,

  1070. they're not the

  1071. best.

  1072. And so I need

  1073. this year, I

  1074. need more and

  1075. more to fill my

  1076. eyes, to fill my

  1077. mind, to fill my

  1078. vision with

  1079. glory.

  1080. Real glory.

  1081. So what does

  1082. that mean?

  1083. Well, how do I

  1084. do that?

  1085. Well, it probably

  1086. means that I start

  1087. reading my Bible

  1088. from my Bible and

  1089. not from my

  1090. iPad.

  1091. The iPad is

  1092. great, especially

  1093. the older you get,

  1094. you can make that

  1095. text really big.

  1096. but there's too

  1097. many things on

  1098. there that are

  1099. distracting, that

  1100. take my attention,

  1101. that again are not

  1102. evil in themselves,

  1103. but when they

  1104. capture the love of

  1105. my heart, they've

  1106. become evil.

  1107. people.

  1108. So, I need to

  1109. probably put that

  1110. away and get

  1111. back to filling my

  1112. mind, my eyes, with

  1113. the vision of the

  1114. beauty of Christ.

  1115. To read more

  1116. from people who

  1117. also see this

  1118. beauty.

  1119. Finally, the

  1120. third thing is I

  1121. need to develop a

  1122. healthier dependence.

  1123. A dependence on the

  1124. power of God to

  1125. transform.

  1126. And this is

  1127. something I, like

  1128. many of you, have

  1129. trouble believing.

  1130. You know, if I'm

  1131. honest, this is

  1132. where I struggle

  1133. because, like you,

  1134. I have tried to

  1135. change.

  1136. I have tried to

  1137. reform my life.

1138. I have tried to do

1139. better in a lot of

  1140. these areas.

  1141. And sometimes, when I

  1142. don't see a whole lot

  1143. of success, I get

  1144. very cynical.

  1145. I have tried to

  1146. do better in a

  1147. way.

  1148. I have tried to

  1149. do better in a

  1150. way.

  1151. I have tried to

  1152. do better in a

  1153. way.

  1154. The problem is, though,

  1155. it's me that I've

  1156. been trusting and not

  1157. him.

  1158. And so, instead of

  1159. determining myself what

  1160. must be done and

  1161. determining that I

  1162. myself will make it

  1163. happen, I need a

  1164. different outlook.

  1165. work.

1166. It's not up to me.

  1167. But I am not

  1168. helpless.

1169. And I have not been

  1170. abandoned to myself.

  1171. I have the spirit.

1172. And to him, I need to

  1173. more often, more

  1174. constantly turn in

  1175. prayer and

  1176. dependence that he

1177. might come and do in

1178. me what he desires to

  1179. do.

1180. and then rest in his

  1181. work.

1182. So how am I going to

  1183. see all this happen?

1184. If it's just me, it

  1185. won't.

1186. But it has to start

  1187. here.

  1188. That I am in

  1189. Christ.

  1190. I am righteous.

  1191. I am pleasing.

  1192. I have been drawn

  1193. near.

  1194. I have been approved.

  1195. He accepts me.

  1196. And I am the

  1197. delight of his

  1198. heart.

  1199. Because I am

  1200. his bride.

  1201. And that has

  1202. to capture my

  1203. heart.

  1204. So that now

  1205. me,

  1206. the bride,

  1207. who is totally

  1208. overcome

  1209. by the love

  1210. of my bridegroom,

  1211. I want nothing

  1212. more than

  1213. him.

  1214. May this

  1215. year,

  1216. may God

  1217. through his

  1218. spirit,

  1219. give me

  1220. a greater

  1221. sense

  1222. of him.

  1223. And I hope

1224. he'll do it for you

  1225. too.

  1226. Let's pray.

  1227. Father,

  1228. thank you for

  1229. your grace.

  1230. thank you for

  1231. your love.

  1232. Help us to

  1233. comprehend it

  1234. more fully.

  1235. That you would

  1236. have our hearts

  1237. holy to

  1238. yourself.

  1239. Because it's

  1240. only in you

  1241. that we will

  1242. find the joy

  1243. that you've

  1244. promised.

  1245. Thank you,

  1246. in Jesus' name.

  1247. Amen.

  1248. Amen.
