  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. We are back in our study of Luke. So if you have Bibles with you, you can put them to Luke 6,

  4. beginning of verse 1. If you don't, you can follow along on the screen up here behind me.

  5. But I'm going to read Luke 6, verses 1 down through verse 11.

    Luke 6:1

  6. So here now, God's inspired word of truth.

  7. On a Sabbath, while he was going through the grain fields, his disciples plucked and ate some heads of grain,

  8. rubbing them in their hands.

  9. But some of the Pharisees said,

  10. Why are you doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?

  11. And Jesus answered them,

  12. Have you not read what David did when he was hungry?

  13. He and those who were with him, how he entered the house of God and took and ate the bread of the presence,

  14. which is not lawful for any, but the priest who eats,

  15. and also gave it to those who were with him?

  16. Let's pray together.

  17. Father, I thank you for Christian,

  18. who knows how to work all this stuff,

  19. that enables your word to be heard,

  20. and for us to engage with you.

  21. And that's what we want now in this time.

  22. We want to engage with you.

  23. We want you to be speaking to us.

  24. And so we thank you for the opportunity,

  25. but we really need your spirit to come and be the one who speaks.

  26. So would you send your spirit to speak to our hearts?

  27. And Father, use my words, which are at best weak.

  28. Use them that we might know you more.

  29. And we pray in Jesus' name.

  30. Amen.

  31. Okay.

  32. It's been a while since we've been in Luke,

  33. so let's kind of step back a little bit and get caught up where we are.

  34. But also, we need to see that context,

  35. to see this growing conflict that is coming about.

  36. You know, and Jesus begins his ministry there in Luke 4,

  37. and everything seems to be going well,

  38. well, except they wanted to kill him after his first sermon,

  39. but that beside.

  40. Things are going well,

  41. but one of the things that Luke says down there

  42. is that word began to spread.

  43. Jesus, you know, after this point,

  44. he goes and heals a man,

  45. or he casts a demon out of this man,

  46. and people marveled, and they were amazed.

  47. But he did it on a Sabbath.

  48. And so, when word begins to spread all over about this Jesus,

  49. yes, they were amazed.

  50. He was casting out demons.

  51. But he did it on a Sabbath.

  52. And so, as we go on,

  53. these reports continue to spread.

  54. He is doing remarkable things.

  55. He's healing and doing all of these things.

  56. And down in Luke 5,

  57. you see that the word about him is spreading even broader.

  58. It's going farther and farther.

  59. And what you begin to see there in Luke 5

  60. is that as the crowds build,

  61. this other group of people starts showing up pretty regularly.

  62. So, when he's now confined in this house,

  63. he's got a whole crowd of people.

  64. When they bring the paralytic in

  65. and lower him down through the roof,

  66. sitting there in the midst of this crowd

  67. are now the Pharisees.

  68. the Jewish authorities.

  69. Because they have heard

  70. all of these things about Jesus.

  71. And so, they're listening and they're watching.

  72. And they're getting disturbed.

  73. Their blood pressure is going up.

  74. And so, as we continue to trace through Luke 5,

  75. you begin to see that they're not just listening anymore.

  76. They're actually asking questions.

  77. And so, when Jesus goes to this party that Levi has,

  78. because he's so excited when he comes to Jesus,

  79. he throws a party for all his non-Christian friends,

  80. all these tax collectors and sinners.

  81. The Pharisees are there.

  82. They're not actually in there.

  83. But they see what's happening.

  84. They ask the disciples,

  85. Hey, what is your master doing here?

  86. Eating with tax collectors and sinners.

  87. And so, at the end of this confrontation,

  88. Jesus basically tells them

  89. that a new system has come.

  90. You can't sew an old piece of material,

  91. a new piece of material,

  92. onto what's old.

  93. Because if you do,

  94. it'll basically destroy both.

  95. And he's telling them that there's a new system coming.

  96. There's a new kingdom that's coming.

  97. And the old has to go.

  98. It can't be tinkered with.

  99. It can't be modified.

  100. It can't be improved.

  101. It needs to be tossed.

  102. To make room,

  103. make way for the new kingdom.

  104. So now we get to Luke 6.

  105. And when we come to Luke 6,

  106. we see Luke gives us two different scenarios here,

  107. two different situations.

  108. But there are events that take place

  109. on two different Sabbaths.

  110. And that's the key thing.

  111. And this is the first of three big conflicts

  112. that Jesus is going to have

  113. with these Jewish authorities over the Sabbath.

  114. And the others will show up in Luke 13.

  115. Another one then in Luke 14.

  116. And it's the Sabbath becomes

  117. one of these primary issues,

  118. or it's kind of a symbolic issue

  119. of the old system.

  120. The Jews, the Sabbath observance for the Jews

  121. was so important

  122. that it was actually a huge statement

  123. of their identity as good Jews.

  124. These Pharisees,

  125. I mean, you have to understand,

  126. the Pharisees in that day,

  127. these were the religious conservatives.

  128. These were the evangelicals of Jerusalem

  129. standing in the forefront,

  130. in the cultural war

  131. to keep away the infection

  132. of Hellenistic thought

  133. into their religion.

  134. They didn't want it to be corrupted.

  135. So the Pharisees developed all of these systems

  136. of regulations and laws

  137. to keep their religion pure.

  138. And they did it,

  139. one of the biggest places they did it

  140. was in Sabbath observance.

  141. There were about five volumes

  142. of rabbinic teaching known as the Talmud.

  143. And there was one whole volume

  144. devoted to how do you keep the Sabbath.

  145. Because, I mean, how do you keep the Sabbath?

  146. You go back to the Ten Commandments,

  147. it's just one little,

  148. one verse that says,

  149. don't work on the Sabbath,

  150. not you or your animals or whatever,

  151. you know, and rest on the Sabbath.

  152. Okay, what does that mean?

  153. Can I travel anywhere on the Sabbath?

  154. How far can I travel?

  155. Well, you know, can I eat?

  156. Can I prepare food?

  157. What can I do?

  158. What can I not do?

  159. And so there's a lot of uncertainty

  160. if that's all that you have

  161. as to whether you're keeping the Sabbath

  162. the way it's supposed to.

  163. So they built up all these definitions

  164. of what it meant to keep the Sabbath.

  165. But these definitions

  166. ended up becoming a litmus test

  167. as to whether you were

  168. an Orthodox,

  169. a good Jew.

  170. And so this was so much

  171. part of the old system.

  172. And so when Jesus comes to town

  173. and starts preaching

  174. and acting the part of this new prophet,

  175. the Pharisees are wondering,

  176. he says, wait a minute.

  177. He's not keeping the Sabbath rules.

  178. How can he be such a prophet?

  179. But this is where we see

  180. this growing conflict.

  181. But it's important for us.

  182. Not so much about for us

  183. as to what we're supposed to do

  184. or not supposed to do on Sunday.

  185. What it is,

  186. is a primary,

  187. maybe an extreme,

  188. but it's a great example

  189. of something that is innately true

  190. of every one of us.

  191. And that is

  192. our tendency towards

  193. and our commitment to

  194. self-justification.

  195. because we are all,

  196. every one of us,

  197. in search of something

  198. that gives us identity,

  199. that gives us value,

  200. that gives us,

  201. that just says that we are right.

  202. And deep down,

  203. we know that we're not.

  204. But we are trying to.

  205. We are looking for something

  206. to give us that sense

  207. that we're okay.

  208. And that's what we see in this.

  209. And so,

  210. I think what I want us to do

  211. is we study down through this.

  212. There are four things

  213. I want us to see.

  214. We're going to look at

  215. the whole methodology

  216. of self-justification,

  217. what that means.

  218. We're going to look at

  219. the tragedy of self-justification.

  220. We're going to look at

  221. the insanity

  222. of self-justification.

  223. And then finally,

  224. we're going to look at

  225. the remedy

  226. for self-justification.

  227. Let's look at the methodology.

  228. You know, again,

  229. the Ten Commandments,

  230. the Sabbath,

  231. there's just not much there.

  232. You're supposed to rest

  233. from your labor.

  234. You're not supposed to travel.

  235. Or you're not,

  236. we don't know exactly

  237. what is rest.

  238. Because even for us,

  239. we wrestle with it.

  240. For some of us,

  241. rest is going out

  242. and working in the yard.

  243. For me,

  244. I like to rest

  245. from working in the yard.

  246. So what does it mean

  247. to rest?

  248. Well,

  249. well,

  250. but that command

  251. that was given to us

  252. in the Ten Commandments

  253. was not just

  254. a piece of,

  255. one article of a legal code,

  256. but it described more

  257. of a posture

  258. of our hearts.

  259. It was a posture

  260. that,

  261. it was a day

  262. where we were to set,

  263. step back

  264. from all that our duties,

  265. all the things

  266. that we were involved with,

  267. and it was supposed

  268. to be a day

  269. of celebration

  270. for all that God

  271. had done

  272. and that we were

  273. to rest in that

  274. and even trust Him

  275. that we don't have

  276. to work

  277. this one day

  278. of the week.

  279. But instead

  280. of it becoming,

  281. just being a heart posture,

  282. it became a whole list

  283. so often

  284. of specific duties.

  285. And so,

  286. you know,

  287. how to keep the Sabbath

  288. and so forth.

  289. And what the Pharisees

  290. came and accused

  291. the disciples of here

  292. were three violations

  293. of the Sabbath.

  294. The disciples

  295. were allowed to

  296. walk through

  297. someone else's field

  298. and just with their hands

  299. pluck grain

  300. and eat.

  301. They weren't allowed

  302. to take a sickle

  303. to someone else's fields,

  304. but the Bible

  305. did provide

  306. four hungry travelers

  307. that you could go

  308. through a field,

  309. pluck grain

  310. with your hands,

  311. and then eat.

  312. But what the Pharisees

  313. had decided,

  314. though,

  315. on the Sabbath

  316. was you could not

  317. reap,

  318. you could not

  319. winnow,

  320. which is separating

  321. the grain from the chaff,

  322. and you could not

  323. prepare food.

  324. Well, the disciples

  325. did all those things.

  326. They plucked grain

  327. with their hands,

  328. which was reaping,

  329. they rubbed it

  330. in their hands

  331. to separate it

  332. from the chaff,

  333. which was winnowing,

  334. and preparing

  335. a meal.

  336. So the Pharisees

  337. were accusing

  338. the disciples here

  339. of breaking

  340. the Sabbath rule,

  341. but this is the problem

  342. with the Sabbath.

  343. What can you do?

  344. What can you not do?

  345. What is right?

  346. And so,

  347. in effect,

  348. the Jewish leaders

  349. erected a system,

  350. a whole system

  351. of laws

  352. that defined

  353. everything.

  354. There were no questions.

  355. There were no gray areas.

  356. Those laws defined

  357. how far you could go

  358. from your residence

  359. on the Sabbath.

  360. They even defined

  361. what your residence was.

  362. It defined

  363. everything

  364. down to the minutiae.

  365. So that

  366. when the Pharisees

  367. looked at their lives,

  368. when they wanted

  369. to obey God,

  370. they could see,

  371. I did it.

  372. I kept

  373. all of those

  374. rules.

  375. Of course,

  376. the other advantage,

  377. too,

  378. is that when you

  379. kept it,

  380. everybody else

  381. would see you

  382. keeping it

  383. as well.

  384. I mean,

  385. what good is it

  386. to be good

  387. if nobody

  388. sees you being good?

  389. It also kept them

  390. from the riffraff

  391. of society.

  392. Because when others

  393. would see them

  394. keeping the Sabbath,

  395. that separated them

  396. in a whole better

  397. class of people.

  398. They were better.

  399. They were good.

  400. They were

  401. not

  402. the ordinary

  403. sinners.

  404. And so,

  405. this is what it does.

  406. But also notice,

  407. what the disciples

  408. were accused of

  409. were not breaking

  410. necessarily

  411. biblical commandments.

  412. The Pharisees

  413. were upset

  414. because they

  415. broke their

  416. rules about

  417. the commandments.

  418. These were

  419. man-made.

  420. These were things

  421. that they had

  422. concocted.

  423. And so,

  424. even in this,

  425. Jesus never

  426. throws out

  427. the concept

  428. of Sabbath.

  429. He actually

  430. promotes it

  431. in a whole

  432. new way.

  433. but what

  434. he was

  435. throwing out

  436. were the

  437. man-made

  438. rules.

  439. And so,

  440. I know this,

  441. in some ways,

  442. it all sounds

  443. kind of silly,

  444. but this is

  445. what we do.

  446. We all do

  447. this.

  448. I mean,

  449. what is it

  450. that makes

  451. you

  452. a good

  453. Christian?

  454. What do you

  455. do

  456. that makes

  457. you feel

  458. good about

  459. yourself

  460. as a

  461. Christian?

  462. I mean,

  463. sometimes,

  464. you know,

  465. it's not,

  466. it's enough,

  467. well,

  468. excuse me,

  469. let me step

  470. back a second.

  471. You know,

  472. sometimes maybe

  473. we don't just

  474. have to be

  475. good,

  476. or we just

  477. have to be

  478. better.

  479. I feel good

  480. about myself

  481. as long as

  482. I'm just

  483. better than

  484. somebody else.

  485. But,

  486. what makes

  487. me better?

  488. What have

  489. I erected?

  490. What kind

  491. of man-made

  492. rule have

  493. I created

  494. that now

  495. gives me

  496. a sense

  497. of superiority

  498. or betterness

  499. or just

  500. feeling good

  501. about myself?

  502. Am I a good

  503. Christian because

  504. I'm against

  505. abortion?

  506. Well,

  507. I hope you

  508. are.

  509. This is

  510. Right to Life

  511. Sunday if you

  512. didn't remember.

  513. You know,

  514. I think it's

  515. good to be

  516. opposed to

  517. be against

  518. abortion,

  519. but does

  520. that make

  521. me better

  522. than you

  523. if you're

  524. not?

  525. Am I a good

  526. Christian because

  527. I'm a

  528. Republican

  529. or because

  530. I'm not?

  531. We won't

  532. say anything

  533. else about

  534. that.

  535. Am I a good

  536. Christian because

  537. of my stance

  538. on same-sex

  539. marriage?

  540. Am I

  541. better because

  542. I am

  543. reformed

  544. theologically?

  545. Am I

  546. better because

  547. I'm a

  548. grace man?

  549. Am I

  550. superior?

  551. Do I

  552. have a

  553. great sense

  554. of value

  555. because I

  556. graduated from

  557. Marshall

  558. University?

  559. I'm really

  560. glad not many

  561. of you have

  562. to deal

  563. with that

  564. kind of

  565. temptation.

  566. It's

  567. brutal.

  568. What makes

  569. you significant?

  570. What makes

  571. you good?

  572. What gives

  573. you a good

  574. sense about

  575. yourself?

  576. We narrow

  577. the law of

  578. God down

  579. to something

  580. just like

  581. the Pharisees,

  582. something that

  583. we can now

  584. do,

  585. we can

  586. achieve,

  587. and we

  588. build our

  589. identity on

  590. that.

  591. To the

  592. neglect,

  593. unfortunately,

  594. of everything

  595. else.

  596. self-justification.

  597. So that's

  598. the method.

  599. We create

  600. a whole set

  601. of laws

  602. that not

  603. only we

  604. have to

  605. keep

  606. ourselves,

  607. we will

  608. also enforce

  609. on other

  610. people.

  611. So what's

  612. the tragedy

  613. of self-justification?

  614. Well,

  615. really,

  616. I think

  617. there's two

  618. things.

  619. The first

  620. thing is

  621. that it's

  622. a joyless

  623. religion.

  624. religion.

  625. There is

  626. no fun

  627. here.

  628. I want you

  629. to find

  630. one place

  631. in Scripture

  632. where these

  633. Pharisees

  634. are at a

  635. party.

  636. Oh,

  637. they're at

  638. parties,

  639. but they're

  640. trying to

  641. break them

  642. up.

  643. This

  644. approach,

  645. this kind

  646. of religion

  647. is an

  648. approach to

  649. God that

  650. requires strict

  651. ritual.

  652. I have to

  653. do right

  654. right or

  655. else.

  656. I am

  657. nothing.

  658. If I don't

  659. do right,

  660. I am an

  661. outcast.

  662. If I don't

  663. do right,

  664. then I'm

  665. not right.

  666. And God

  667. then becomes

  668. somebody

  669. not to

  670. love,

  671. but to

  672. appease.

  673. I've got to

  674. do something

  675. to make

  676. him smile,

  677. to make

  678. him happy,

  679. or maybe

  680. not that

  681. far.

  682. Maybe I'm

  683. not trying to

  684. make him

  685. smile.

  686. I'm just

  687. trying to

  688. keep him

  689. from getting

  690. ticked off

  691. and getting

  692. angry and

  693. whacking me

  694. around somehow.

  695. all.

  696. And what it

  697. says here is

  698. that their

  699. God that they

  700. worship is

  701. not fun.

  702. He's not

  703. fun to be

  704. with.

  705. He's not a

  706. joy to

  707. deal with.

  708. He is a

  709. God that is

  710. hard to

  711. please.

  712. And

  713. typically,

  714. he's angry.

  715. You know,

  716. how do you

  717. enjoy a

  718. God that

  719. you have to

  720. constantly

  721. placate?

  722. How do

  723. you live

  724. with

  725. someone

  726. who's always

  727. looking over

  728. your shoulder

  729. and he's

  730. got a

  731. scorecard?

  732. How do

  733. you rest?

  734. How do

  735. you enjoy

  736. life?

  737. Are you

  738. excited about

  739. this person

  740. with a

  741. scorecard?

  742. Don't you

  743. wish that he

  744. would just

  745. leave?

  746. so you

  747. could rest?

  748. Well,

  749. that's the

  750. tragedy.

  751. That's the

  752. way a lot

  753. of us

  754. live our

  755. religion.

  756. God is

  757. not somebody

  758. that's fun.

  759. He's a

  760. necessary evil

  761. who's

  762. constantly

  763. displeased.

  764. He's

  765. disappointed

  766. because his

  767. scorecards

  768. are not

  769. favorable

  770. for us.

  771. you

  772. know,

  773. I lived

  774. for years

  775. and years

  776. with this

  777. one

  778. very

  779. haunting

  780. question.

  781. Am I

  782. good

  783. enough?

  784. You know,

  785. not am I

  786. good,

  787. am I

  788. good

  789. enough?

  790. Have I

  791. kept

  792. enough?

  793. Have I

  794. been

  795. doing

  796. enough?

  797. And I

  798. never

  799. could answer

  800. that

  801. question.

  802. And the

  803. answer to

  804. that

  805. question

  806. would

  807. determine

  808. what this

  809. God was

  810. like

  811. that I

  812. had to

  813. deal

  814. with.

  815. If I

  816. have

  817. devotional

  818. times

  819. every day

  820. for 10

  821. years,

  822. is that

  823. going to

  824. make God

  825. happy?

  826. Would he

  827. require me

  828. 30 minutes

  829. a day

  830. or maybe

  831. 45?

  832. Is that

  833. enough?

  834. How do

  835. we ever

  836. do enough?

  837. See,

  838. that's the

  839. problem with

  840. the scorecard.

  841. And that's

  842. the problem

  843. with a God

  844. who keeps

  845. score.

  846. the other

  847. part of

  848. this,

  849. the other

  850. tragedy in

  851. this,

  852. is that

  853. if that

  854. is the

  855. way I

  856. live with

  857. God,

  858. it's also

  859. the way I

  860. live with

  861. people around

  862. me.

  863. You know,

  864. it's I

  865. become God.

  866. When I

  867. set up the

  868. rules,

  869. that's

  870. something that

  871. only God

  872. can do.

  873. And then

  874. when I

  875. use the

  876. rules to

  877. judge other

  878. people as

  879. to whether

  880. they are

  881. meeting the

  882. standard,

  883. that puts

  884. me in the

  885. judgment seat,

  886. which is

  887. only a

  888. place for

  889. God.

  890. And in

  891. so doing,

  892. with people

  893. around me,

  894. I'm the one

  895. that ends up

  896. carrying the

  897. scorecard.

  898. And I

  899. become the

  900. lawgiver,

  901. the judge,

  902. and the

  903. jury,

  904. and the

  905. executioner.

  906. God

  907. because if

  908. you don't

  909. meet up to

  910. my standards,

  911. you'll

  912. become an

  913. outcast.

  914. From my

  915. circle,

  916. from my

  917. favor,

  918. you'll

  919. become an

  920. outcast.

  921. And see,

  922. these Pharisees,

  923. that's exactly

  924. what they did.

  925. They created

  926. this law,

  927. and it's

  928. funny,

  929. well, it's not

  930. really funny,

  931. it's tragic.

  932. There's a man

  933. there with a

  934. withered hand.

  935. It was a

  936. right hand.

  937. And if you

  938. know anything

  939. about Middle

  940. Eastern culture,

  941. the right hand

  942. is everything,

  943. and you never

  944. do anything

  945. with the left

  946. hand because

  947. of certain

  948. things you

  949. do with

  950. the left

  951. hand.

  952. And this

  953. guy had a

  954. withered right

  955. hand.

  956. He was

  957. helpless.

  958. The Pharisees

  959. did not

  960. care.

  961. And they

  962. started judging

  963. Jesus because

  964. he didn't

  965. follow their

  966. specific rules.

  967. They got

  968. angry at

  969. him.

  970. You know,

  971. you can find

  972. a place where

  973. you get angry

  974. or where

  975. you're self-justifying

  976. by simply

  977. looking at

  978. those places

  979. where you

  980. get angry

  981. the quickest.

  982. You know,

  983. we've talked

  984. about anger

  985. before,

  986. but it's

  987. such a great

  988. window into

  989. our soul.

  990. Who is it

  991. that makes

  992. you angry?

  993. Is it

  994. homosexuals?

  995. Is it

  996. liberals?

  997. Is it

  998. Yankees?

  999. Who makes

  1000. you angry?

  1001. People that

  1002. don't use

  1003. their signal

  1004. lights?

  1005. Or people

  1006. that constantly

  1007. drive on the

  1008. left lane

  1009. and not the

  1010. right lane?

  1011. when I

  1012. feel the

  1013. right to

  1014. condemn

  1015. somebody

  1016. because

  1017. they're

  1018. doing

  1019. something

  1020. that I

  1021. think

  1022. is

  1023. stupid

  1024. or wrong,

  1025. that's a

  1026. window

  1027. into

  1028. something

  1029. that I'm

  1030. using

  1031. to justify

  1032. myself.

  1033. the

  1034. Pharisees

  1035. majored

  1036. on

  1037. outward

  1038. religion

  1039. but it

  1040. was a

  1041. religion

  1042. that was

  1043. very cold,

  1044. it was

  1045. very harsh

  1046. and in

  1047. many ways

  1048. they missed

  1049. everything

  1050. about their

  1051. religion

  1052. because they

  1053. would have

  1054. known

  1055. that way

  1056. back in

  1057. the Old

  1058. Testament

  1059. one of

  1060. the minor

  1061. prophets

  1062. had already

  1063. spoken of

  1064. this whole

  1065. thing,

  1066. his name

  1067. was Micah.

  1068. In Micah

    Micah 6:6–8

  1069. chapter 6

  1070. verses 6

  1071. through 8

  1072. Micah

  1073. came to

  1074. them and

  1075. said,

  1076. look,

  1077. your

  1078. outward

  1079. religion

  1080. means

  1081. nothing

  1082. to me

  1083. but this

  1084. is what

  1085. God

  1086. requires

  1087. of you.

  1088. He says

  1089. to do

  1090. justice

  1091. and that

  1092. is

  1093. to treat

  1094. people

  1095. with the

  1096. dignity

  1097. and the

  1098. value

  1099. and the

  1100. respect

  1101. that they

  1102. deserve

  1103. as being

  1104. created

  1105. in the

  1106. image of

  1107. God.

  1108. Did they

  1109. do that

  1110. with that

  1111. man with

  1112. their hand?

  1113. No.

  1114. Do I

  1115. do that

  1116. with these

  1117. crazy

  1118. drivers out

  1119. here on

  1120. the road?

  1121. No.

  1122. Then it

  1123. says

  1124. to love

  1125. kindness

  1126. or to

  1127. love

  1128. mercy

  1129. and that

  1130. is to

  1131. desire

  1132. to come

  1133. to the

  1134. aid of

  1135. those who

  1136. are helpless

  1137. and needy

  1138. and

  1139. needy

  1140. help

  1141. basically

  1142. to love.

  1143. And when

  1144. I've got my

  1145. rule book

  1146. out and

  1147. scorecard

  1148. out,

  1149. that's not

  1150. what comes

  1151. out of

  1152. me.

  1153. And it

  1154. says to

  1155. walk humbly

  1156. with their

  1157. God because

  1158. see what they

  1159. were doing

  1160. in all of

  1161. this was

  1162. they were

  1163. becoming

  1164. God

  1165. in and

  1166. of

  1167. themselves.

  1168. They were

  1169. the law

  1170. giver.

  1171. They were

  1172. the judge.

  1173. They were

  1174. the jury.

  1175. They were

  1176. the executioner.

  1177. That's not

  1178. humility.

  1179. That's the

  1180. opposite of

  1181. humility.

  1182. That's exactly

  1183. what Satan

  1184. was doing

  1185. when he

  1186. was thrown

  1187. out.

  1188. But this

  1189. is a picture

  1190. of us

  1191. when we

  1192. are self

  1193. justifying

  1194. according to

  1195. a set of

  1196. standards

  1197. we create

  1198. and then

  1199. apply to

  1200. everybody else

  1201. around us.

  1202. And it's

  1203. tragic.

  1204. But it's

  1205. also

  1206. insanity.

  1207. I mean

  1208. there's a

  1209. word here

  1210. that I've

  1211. got to

  1212. point out

  1213. to you

  1214. that really

  1215. is unfortunate

  1216. the way it

  1217. was translated

  1218. in our

  1219. text.

  1220. In verse

  1221. 11 down

  1222. there it

  1223. says,

  1224. and they

  1225. were filled

  1226. with fury.

  1227. Well that

  1228. word is

  1229. not just a

  1230. word for

  1231. strong anger.

  1232. It's actually

  1233. a word that

  1234. can be

  1235. translated as

  1236. dementia

  1237. or insanity.

  1238. So when

  1239. the Pharisees

  1240. heard what

  1241. Jesus said

  1242. and watched

  1243. him do

  1244. what he

  1245. did and

  1246. they had

  1247. no answer

  1248. literally I

  1249. wish the

  1250. writers of

  1251. this of

  1252. the ESV

  1253. had said

  1254. they went

  1255. nuts.

  1256. They were

  1257. out of

  1258. their minds.

  1259. They were

  1260. out of

  1261. control.

  1262. They were

  1263. so enraged.

  1264. But it

  1265. was an

  1266. insane

  1267. they were

  1268. mad.

  1269. Literally

  1270. they were

  1271. mad.

  1272. when the

  1273. foolishness

  1274. was brought

  1275. to the

  1276. lights

  1277. and it

  1278. was

  1279. foolishness

  1280. they

  1281. couldn't

  1282. see it

  1283. and they

  1284. didn't give

  1285. it up

  1286. but they

  1287. dug their

  1288. heels in

  1289. even

  1290. farther

  1291. and in

  1292. their

  1293. rage

  1294. in their

  1295. insane

  1296. rage

  1297. they

  1298. tried to

  1299. recapture

  1300. this

  1301. foundation

  1302. upon which

  1303. they were

  1304. standing

  1305. that Jesus

  1306. had just

  1307. knocked out

  1308. from under

  1309. their feet.

  1310. It's

  1311. insane.

  1312. Self-justification

  1313. is insane.

  1314. I mean

  1315. how many of us

  1316. do enough?

  1317. How many of us

  1318. are good enough?

  1319. I mean

  1320. so what

  1321. what is it

  1322. that makes

  1323. me good?

  1324. What am I

  1325. doing

  1326. that

  1327. gives me

  1328. more value?

  1329. How is it

  1330. that I can

  1331. think

  1332. that I have

  1333. a right

  1334. to condemn

  1335. another

  1336. people

  1337. simply because

  1338. they throw

  1339. a switch

  1340. in their

  1341. car

  1342. or they

  1343. don't

  1344. throw it?

  1345. Why would

  1346. I think

  1347. that I have

  1348. a greater

  1349. value

  1350. and I can

  1351. feel better

  1352. about myself

  1353. than you

  1354. because of

  1355. my low

  1356. carb

  1357. diet?

  1358. And that

  1359. I'm

  1360. better

  1361. than those

  1362. who would

  1363. eat donuts

  1364. every day

  1365. and I

  1366. will

  1367. not mention

  1368. any names.

  1369. Though

  1370. the brownie

  1371. I had last

  1372. weekend

  1373. didn't count

  1374. or the

  1375. biscuits I

  1376. had yesterday

  1377. morning.

  1378. You got

  1379. any donuts

  1380. left?

  1381. You got

  1382. what makes

  1383. me think

  1384. that these

  1385. trivial

  1386. little things

  1387. gives me

  1388. a basis

  1389. to separate

  1390. myself from

  1391. the riffraff

  1392. and it

  1393. puts me

  1394. in a

  1395. superior

  1396. place

  1397. that somehow

  1398. my scorecard

  1399. looks better

  1400. because of

  1401. that.

  1402. Insanity.

  1403. It is

  1404. also.

  1405. And it's

  1406. so contrary

  1407. and this

  1408. is interesting

  1409. why did

  1410. Jesus pick

  1411. the Sabbath?

  1412. Because a

  1413. life like

  1414. this has

  1415. no rest.

  1416. None.

  1417. Because how

  1418. can you

  1419. rest

  1420. with a

  1421. scorecard?

  1422. how can you

  1423. ever rest

  1424. that you've

  1425. done enough?

  1426. How can you

  1427. ever rest

  1428. in your

  1429. value?

  1430. You can't.

  1431. do you

  1432. think of God

  1433. instead of

  1434. bringing a

  1435. smile to your

  1436. face it

  1437. probably

  1438. strikes

  1439. terror in

  1440. your heart.

  1441. Do you

  1442. ever think of

  1443. what the

  1444. judgment day

  1445. is going to

  1446. be?

  1447. You get to

  1448. stand before

  1449. God and the

  1450. records opened.

  1451. Are you looking

  1452. forward to it?

  1453. Because he's

  1454. going to pull

  1455. out your

  1456. scorecard.

  1457. how are you

  1458. going to be?

  1459. How are you

  1460. going to do?

  1461. Well there is

  1462. a remedy

  1463. and we see it

  1464. here in two

  1465. places.

  1466. First in

  1467. verse 5

  1468. and I love

  1469. this.

  1470. When Jesus

  1471. goes through

  1472. and he's

  1473. answering the

  1474. Pharisees

  1475. and gives

  1476. them this

  1477. tale of

  1478. look you

  1479. make

  1480. exception for

  1481. David who

  1482. was the

  1483. king and

  1484. he broke

  1485. the rules

  1486. of the

  1487. tabernacle

  1488. by eating

  1489. bread.

  1490. See you've

  1491. got a

  1492. greater king

  1493. here.

  1494. Because I'm

  1495. not David.

  1496. I'm Lord

  1497. of David.

  1498. I'm Lord

  1499. of the

  1500. Sabbath

  1501. itself.

  1502. And little

  1503. did these

  1504. Pharisees

  1505. realize that

  1506. they were

  1507. standing before

  1508. the face of

  1509. the one who

  1510. declared the

  1511. Sabbath to

  1512. come into

  1513. being.

  1514. And why

  1515. did he

  1516. create the

  1517. Sabbath?

  1518. To celebrate.

  1519. To celebrate

  1520. all that God

  1521. had done.

  1522. To celebrate

  1523. his creation.

  1524. To celebrate

  1525. the goodness

  1526. of it.

  1527. You know where

  1528. he pronounced

  1529. it at the end

  1530. of that sixth

  1531. day and it

  1532. was very

  1533. good.

  1534. And then he

  1535. had this day

  1536. to again

  1537. to rest from

  1538. his labor.

  1539. But then to

  1540. celebrate all

  1541. of this great

  1542. work.

  1543. And the one

  1544. now that

  1545. stood in

  1546. front of

  1547. them

  1548. was not

  1549. only the

  1550. creator who

  1551. called it

  1552. into being

  1553. but he was

  1554. also the

  1555. one who

  1556. was making

  1557. all things

  1558. new.

  1559. It was

  1560. his work

  1561. that was

  1562. going to

  1563. become the

  1564. scorecard.

  1565. he was

  1566. going to

  1567. go and

  1568. it was

  1569. going to

  1570. be on

  1571. the cross

  1572. where he

  1573. would say

  1574. it is

  1575. finished.

  1576. It is

  1577. done.

  1578. He was

  1579. going to

  1580. go and

  1581. he was

  1582. going to

  1583. live and

  1584. fulfill

  1585. everything

  1586. that God

  1587. required.

  1588. Fill the

  1589. scorecard

  1590. with

  1591. righteousness

  1592. and then

  1593. hand it

  1594. to us

  1595. if we

  1596. believed.

  1597. and in

  1598. that

  1599. we can

  1600. rest.

  1601. Jesus

  1602. would

  1603. do all

  1604. that was

  1605. required

  1606. of us

  1607. himself.

  1608. He would

  1609. do the

  1610. work

  1611. and then

  1612. invite us

  1613. into his

  1614. rest.

  1615. And it

  1616. would be

  1617. a rest

  1618. that would

  1619. go on

  1620. forever.

  1621. God

  1622. would

  1623. do the

  1624. rest.

  1625. But

  1626. secondly

  1627. there was

  1628. something

  1629. else.

  1630. In that

  1631. second

  1632. episode

  1633. I loved

  1634. it because

  1635. there was

  1636. there was

  1637. somebody in

  1638. that group

  1639. in that

  1640. place

  1641. of the

  1642. synagogue

  1643. who was

  1644. lame

  1645. who was

  1646. weak

  1647. and he

  1648. was

  1649. helpless

  1650. and

  1651. everybody

  1652. thinks

  1653. it was

  1654. the man

  1655. with

  1656. the

  1657. withered

  1658. hand.

  1659. But it

  1660. wasn't

  1661. just him.

  1662. it was

  1663. all those

  1664. Pharisees.

  1665. And he

  1666. basically

  1667. told the

  1668. guy with

  1669. the

  1670. withered

  1671. hand

  1672. he says

  1673. come to

  1674. me.

  1675. Stretch

  1676. out your

  1677. hand.

  1678. And in

  1679. the same

  1680. way he

  1681. was calling

  1682. to the

  1683. Pharisees

  1684. to do

  1685. the same

  1686. thing.

  1687. He said

  1688. come to

  1689. me.

  1690. Come

  1691. stretch

  1692. out your

  1693. hand.

  1694. you're

  1695. helpless.

  1696. You

  1697. can't

  1698. do

  1699. enough.

  1700. Come

  1701. to

  1702. me.

  1703. Just

  1704. like he

  1705. says in

  1706. Matthew

  1707. 11.

  1708. Come

  1709. to me

  1710. all who

  1711. are weary

  1712. and heavy

  1713. laden

  1714. and I

  1715. will give

  1716. you rest.

  1717. Let me

  1718. ask you a

  1719. question.

  1720. How many

  1721. of y'all

  1722. are tired?

  1723. how many

  1724. of you are

  1725. tired of

  1726. the

  1727. scorecard?

  1728. How many

  1729. of you are

  1730. tired of

  1731. trying to

  1732. perform and

  1733. trying to

  1734. be good

  1735. enough?

  1736. And not

  1737. really knowing

  1738. if you ever

  1739. get there?

  1740. Well you do

  1741. kind of know

  1742. because you

  1743. know you

  1744. never get

  1745. there.

  1746. There's a lot

  1747. of us are

  1748. tired.

  1749. Jesus

  1750. says come

  1751. to me.

  1752. Don't worry

  1753. about doing

  1754. all this

  1755. stuff.

  1756. I've already

  1757. done it.

  1758. You can't do

  1759. anything with

  1760. the scorecard

  1761. that's enough.

  1762. I've already

  1763. done it.

  1764. The scorecard

  1765. is full.

  1766. It is

  1767. fulfilled.

  1768. It is

  1769. complete.

  1770. There will

  1771. nothing else

  1772. to be done.

  1773. Come to

  1774. me.

  1775. And in

  1776. me

  1777. you'll

  1778. find

  1779. what he

  1780. means

  1781. by rest

  1782. and the

  1783. Sabbath.

  1784. Because it's

  1785. the end of

  1786. labor.

  1787. It's the

  1788. end of

  1789. performance.

  1790. It's the

  1791. celebration

  1792. now of

  1793. all that

  1794. Christ

  1795. has

  1796. done

  1797. for us.

  1798. Because now

  1799. we are

  1800. in

  1801. Christ.

  1802. So if

  1803. you're

  1804. tired

  1805. come to

  1806. Jesus

  1807. and know

  1808. his rest.

  1809. Let's

  1810. pray.

  1811. Father

  1812. we

  1813. there's a

  1814. lot of

  1815. us here

  1816. that are

  1817. tired.

  1818. some of

  1819. us are

  1820. tired

  1821. and we

  1822. don't

  1823. know

  1824. it.

  1825. But some

  1826. of us

  1827. know it

  1828. very

  1829. acutely.

  1830. Would

  1831. you

  1832. give us

  1833. ears to

  1834. hear your

  1835. invitation?

  1836. And would

  1837. you give us

  1838. the strength

  1839. to get up

  1840. and go

  1841. to Jesus

  1842. and stretch

  1843. out our

  1844. hands to

  1845. him?

  1846. and help

  1847. us to

  1848. believe

  1849. that in

  1850. Jesus

  1851. we can

  1852. finally find

  1853. our rest.

  1854. No more

  1855. self-justifying.

  1856. No more

  1857. performing.

  1858. Just rest.

  1859. Because Jesus

  1860. has done it

  1861. all.

  1862. Would you

  1863. do that

  1864. for us?

  1865. Jesus.

  1866. And

  1867. Father

  1868. if there's

  1869. some here

  1870. who've never

  1871. known

  1872. Jesus at

  1873. all

  1874. and are

  1875. so tired

  1876. would you

  1877. speak to

  1878. their hearts

  1879. that they

  1880. might hear

  1881. his voice

  1882. his

  1883. inviting

  1884. voice

  1885. that they

  1886. might come

  1887. to you.

  1888. And we

  1889. pray in

  1890. Jesus name.

  1891. Amen.

  1892. Amen.
