  1. Thank you all so much for leading us in worship.

  2. If you'll turn with me this morning to Luke chapter 6, Luke 6, we're in the middle of

    Luke 6 chapter mention

  3. a sermon Jesus preached to his followers as he began to shape a new community in very

  4. unique ways.

  5. Last week we saw that he was calling them to have new values, strange values, very distinctive

  6. from those around them.

  7. They were going to be very different in what they treasured.

  8. So what would it look like when his followers began to live according to those unique values?

  9. You've got to expect at this point that the ethics Jesus calls his followers to will be

  10. unique as well if they're going to reflect those unique values.

  11. If you ask anyone in the world, just someone on the street, what Jesus told his followers

  12. to do and they could only give you one word to answer, what word do you think they might

  13. pick?

  14. What word would come to mind for you?

  15. A lot of them would say love, like I just heard several of you say.

  16. Love.

  17. Napoleon Bonaparte, the great French general, would agree with that answer.

  18. He reportedly once said, Alexander, Caesar, Charlemagne, and I have founded empires, but

  19. upon what did they depend?

  20. Force.

  21. Centuries ago, Jesus started an empire that was built on love and even to this day, millions

  22. will die for him.

  23. An empire built on love.

  24. Love.

  25. That's the essence of this new ethic Jesus has for his followers.

  26. Well, that doesn't sound real unique, right?

  27. I mean, lots of people recommend love, parents, preachers, politicians, singers.

  28. You know, everybody talks about all you need is love, love.

  29. I'll stop.

  30. Love is all you need, right?

  31. Love.

  32. Should be easy.

  33. This should be a happy sermon, a very simple, short, you hope.

  34. Jesus does indeed call us to love, but this is unique love.

  35. It's shaped by these new values he's given us.

  36. I wouldn't use the word easy for what Jesus is about to call us to.

  37. Hear God's word at Luke 6, verse 27.

    Luke 6:27

  38. Timeless truth from the God who designed us and this world.

  39. He speaks.

  40. Hear his voice.

  41. But I say to you who hear, love your enemies.

  42. Do good to those who hate you.

  43. Bless those who curse you.

  44. Pray for those who abuse you.

  45. To one who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also.

  46. And from one who takes away your cloak, do not withhold your tunic either.

  47. Give to everyone who begs from you.

  48. And from one who takes away your goods, do not demand them back.

  49. And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them.

  50. If you love those who love you, what benefit is that to you?

  51. For even sinners love those who love them.

  52. And if you do good to those who do good to you, what benefit is that to you?

  53. For even sinners do the same.

  54. And if you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you?

  55. Even sinners lend to sinners to get back the same amount.

  56. But love your enemies.

  57. And do good and lend, expecting nothing in return.

  58. And your reward will be great and you will be sons of the Most High.

  59. For he is kind to the ungrateful and the evil.

  60. Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.

  61. Pray with me.

  62. Father, we give you thanks for these, your words.

  63. But we struggle with living like this.

  64. They convict us even upon the reading of them.

  65. We do ask that you would give us your heart.

  66. Your love.

  67. Your eyes to see what it will look like to love others in the ways that you have called us to.

  68. Jesus, we ask that you would do that work in us this morning.

  69. That it would be a change of heart that flows out and changes our lives.

  70. And impacts many around us.

  71. Would you work by your spirit through your word this morning to change us?

  72. We ask in your name.

  73. Amen.

  74. I am not usually a fan of corny acrostics.

  75. Actually, maybe I am.

  76. But I don't want you to think that I am.

  77. And I saw one this week that is a little bit helpful, even if corny.

  78. Love.

  79. What's love?

  80. Love is living our values every day.

  81. I think that's helpful to us.

  82. Because to talk about love here, we need to see the connection between where we were last week in the first part of Jesus' sermon.

  83. Talking about our values.

  84. What we value.

  85. What we value.

  86. And what it looks like now this week to connect that to how we live.

  87. To what actually shows up in our lives day in and day out.

  88. We said there were these new values Jesus was calling his followers to have.

  89. You may remember some of them.

  90. They would value eternity above today.

  91. They would treasure Jesus more than the things of this world.

  92. They would consider the have-nots more blessed than the haves.

  93. No big deal.

  94. That's easy, right?

  95. You got those all fixed in your hearts this week.

  96. Those of you who were here last time, a few days to straighten that out.

  97. Now that you've got the values straight, let's talk about the change that's taking place in our lives.

  98. Having set our hearts in the appropriate direction, what does that look like when we've lived following them?

  99. Challenging values and this will be challenging this morning as well.

  100. Jesus begins to tell his followers what it looks like when we live our values every day.

  101. When love is a feeling that flows into action.

  102. When the truth of the gospel and the values of the kingdom aren't just theoretical,

  103. but they begin to permeate every aspect of our lives.

  104. We're different people.

  105. We do different things.

  106. What's that going to look like?

  107. So I'll describe the love that Jesus is talking about here as being so full in Jesus

  108. that you give relentlessly with no need to receive repayment.

  109. Do you see in that the connection to the values?

  110. Jesus is the treasure.

  111. We have him.

  112. Nothing else is needed to make us blessed.

  113. To make us full.

  114. And so we share everything with others.

  115. We give away.

  116. Tangible, intangible.

  117. We'll talk about the details.

  118. Let me say up front that this is a mindset Jesus is calling us to have.

  119. An approach to all of life.

  120. A perspective on every situation we walk into that Jesus is giving us.

  121. This is the only disclaimer I'll give this morning.

  122. It's not a checklist that we go complete.

  123. A few things we need to do and be finished with.

  124. So there are times when we must love and we must use godly wisdom as to what that love will look like.

  125. It's not a detailed explanation of every particular situation we'll find ourselves in.

  126. So love in an abusive relationship for instance may look like getting out.

  127. Finding safety.

  128. Getting help for yourself and for the other person.

  129. That may be what love looks like.

  130. But regardless love is the ethic.

  131. The lens through which we are to approach all of life.

  132. What specifically does this love look like that Jesus calls us to?

  133. First it is intentionally for those who are against you.

  134. Verse 27.

  135. I say to you who hear love your enemies.

  136. Do good to those who hate you.

  137. Bless those who curse you.

  138. Pray for those who abuse you.

  139. Martin Luther King Jr. was in prison in 1963 when he worked on polishing up his sermon on love your enemies.

  140. He was held against his will by those working against him and against his heart for our country.

  141. His enemies were powerful and he was suffering as a result of that.

  142. But it was in that great sermon that he said,

  143. Hate cannot drive out hate.

  144. Only love can do that.

  145. Have we not come to such an impasse in our modern world that we must love our enemies or else?

  146. 1963.

  147. And King proposed a new path.

  148. To our most bitter opponents we say,

  149. We shall match your capacity to inflict suffering by our capacity to endure suffering.

  150. We shall meet your physical force with soul force.

  151. Do to us what you will and we shall continue to love you.

  152. To one who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also.

  153. And from one who takes away your cloak, do not withhold your tunic either.

  154. This is revolutionary.

  155. In case you hadn't noticed.

  156. Love has a target, Jesus says.

  157. And it's targeted towards someone.

  158. Perhaps towards someone who's targeted you for ill.

  159. And Jesus says,

  160. You target them for good.

  161. Perhaps the person has betrayed you.

  162. Perhaps the person has excluded you.

  163. Perhaps the person has let you down.

  164. Failed you.

  165. Disappointed you.

  166. Caused you great harm.

  167. And Jesus is calling us to move intentionally toward those pushing away from us.

  168. To begin demonstrating love toward those who don't deserve it.

  169. Toward those our hearts are rightfully struggling to have warm feelings towards.

  170. See that's part of what agape love means.

  171. That's the word in the Greek for love in this passage.

  172. You may know there are several types of love in Greek.

  173. This is not the word for romantic love.

  174. This is also not the word for appreciative love.

  175. Like, I love Dabo Swinney because I think he's a great coach and I root for his team.

  176. Or like, you love your friend because you think they're a great friend and they like the things that you do.

  177. You appreciate that about them.

  178. This is not that word either.

  179. No, the word Jesus uses for love has in mind, in the word itself, love for the unlovely.

  180. The undeserving.

  181. Because it's an enemy you choose to love.

  182. Not something you see and appreciate in them.

  183. But someone you choose to love.

  184. Being intentionally for those who are against you.

  185. To our most bitter opponents, we say, do to us what you will and we shall continue to love you.

  186. Secondly, when we find those who are against us, love is then actively sacrificial in its generosity.

  187. Look at verse 29.

  188. I can't read these verses without picturing the priest in Les Mis.

  189. You may know the story that the thief, Jean Valjean, has taken advantage of his hospitality.

  190. Has assaulted the priest and has run off with the valuable silverware.

  191. And then Valjean is caught and dragged back to stand before the priest, guilty and ashamed.

  192. And his head is down.

  193. And the priest is upset with Valjean.

  194. But only because he hasn't taken enough.

  195. Valjean meets grace when he comes back before the priest.

  196. It's agape love.

  197. Why did you leave the candlesticks?

  198. They're valuable.

  199. Please take them too.

  200. Now let him go.

  201. A crazy, perhaps seemingly irresponsible love.

  202. A self-giving.

  203. That is exactly what this agape love means.

  204. It's agape love is the love of someone higher, lifting one who is lower.

  205. Bending to aid one who is in need.

  206. And again, just as with the directive to be intentional in seeking out and moving toward our enemies,

  207. the passionate and personal nature of agape love is significant here.

  208. Being actively generous with our forgiveness, with our finances, whatever it happens to be.

  209. Seeking out the one we would show love to.

  210. Finding the one who needs, not the one who deserves.

  211. I often think to myself when I've been offended,

  212. well, I'm willing to forgive.

  213. I'm such a gracious guy.

  214. I'm willing to forgive him as soon as he comes groveling back to ask for it.

  215. As soon as he realizes what he's done and repents,

  216. I'll be here to forgive.

  217. And I feel very gracious and very Christian when I sit back and think I'd be delighted to show forgiveness.

  218. Jesus says, no, no, no.

  219. No, no.

  220. Don't wait for him.

  221. Go to him.

  222. Don't sit back and wait for him to ask.

  223. Move toward your enemy preemptively.

  224. Don't sit back and wait for him to steal your shirt when he takes your coat.

  225. Go ahead and give him the shirt.

  226. At the same time.

  227. That's love.

  228. That's Christian.

  229. That doesn't make any sense.

  230. Unless you've received forgiveness like that from someone who moved toward you.

  231. That doesn't make any sense unless you're so full of the treasure of Jesus

  232. that giving away the shirt off your back again and again could never make you empty.

  233. That giving away the vengeful thirst for justice against your enemy,

  234. giving away the moral high ground against your enemy who's not as good as you,

  235. could never make you empty.

  236. When you've been given to like that,

  237. so full that nothing could take it away from you,

  238. Jesus says you go running around looking for others to give to.

  239. The so-called golden rule right there in verse 31.

  240. As you wish that others would do to you,

  241. do so to them.

  242. Kids, your parents have told you that a hundred times, haven't they?

  243. Treat other people the way you want them to treat you,

  244. and it's still hard to do, isn't it?

  245. You know why it's so hard?

  246. Because they may not treat us back that way.

  247. You may be kind to them,

  248. and they may still be mean back to you,

  249. and that's hard.

  250. It doesn't guarantee that you'll feel good

  251. and that nice things will happen to you.

  252. It actually requires that you think of them first

  253. and how you would want them to feel

  254. rather than how you feel and what happens to you.

  255. But think for just a second, kids.

  256. If you were lonely,

  257. would you want someone to come include you?

  258. If you had hurt someone or said something mean about them,

  259. would you want them to come and forgive you

  260. and tell you it was okay?

  261. If you needed help,

  262. would you want someone to help you just enough

  263. to kind of get you by

  264. or help you a whole lot,

  265. more than you even thought you needed?

  266. What would show you that they really loved you

  267. and cared about you?

  268. Kids, we are to love others so much

  269. that we have to sacrifice ourselves

  270. to give of ourselves,

  271. to be so generous to them

  272. that it actually costs us something,

  273. that we would share something

  274. that means something to us.

  275. Now that's not easy or normal, is it?

  276. Parents, let me ask you this.

  277. How many arguments have you broken up

  278. where both of your kids were insisting

  279. on the other one getting to have their way?

  280. Just imagine it.

  281. You've had this happen many times.

  282. You walk into the room

  283. to the argument that starts with,

  284. dear sweet sister,

  285. I want you to use the doll first.

  286. To which you hear the response,

  287. no darling sister,

  288. I insist that you play with it first.

  289. And the response is,

  290. mom,

  291. why do we always have to do things

  292. the way I want to do them?

  293. She won't play with the doll first.

  294. You interrupt those arguments a lot?

  295. Happens at our house all the time.

  296. We're very spiritual.

  297. That's not natural.

  298. That's not usually the way things are, right?

  299. Thankfully, we grow out of that

  300. me first mentality

  301. and we learn to love

  302. like Jesus is describing

  303. by sometime in early adulthood.

  304. So kids,

  305. now we get to pick on the parents

  306. a little.

  307. How many kids have overheard

  308. their parents saying,

  309. whom would you like to have over

  310. for dinner tonight, honey?

  311. Is there anyone

  312. you're really struggling

  313. to get along with right now?

  314. Let's get them over here.

  315. Spend some time together.

  316. Or,

  317. you know whom we really need

  318. to pray for tonight, y'all?

  319. That family that didn't invite us

  320. to the party

  321. and then went

  322. and told hateful lies

  323. about us to everyone

  324. who was there.

  325. That they seem to be going

  326. through some hard things

  327. and let's pray that God

  328. would meet them there

  329. and bless them.

  330. Can't we pray for them

  331. together tonight?

  332. Is that what happens

  333. at your dinner table?

  334. Those conversations sound

  335. as rare as the

  336. kids' argument I made up?

  337. Seem unnatural to you?

  338. They are.

  339. But I promise

  340. they're not exaggerated

  341. from what Jesus

  342. is calling us to.

  343. Not in the slightest.

  344. I'm taking it easy,

  345. I think,

  346. in those examples.

  347. And that's part of

  348. why we know

  349. that this kind of love

  350. is not natural

  351. to any of us.

  352. No matter what age

  353. we are,

  354. it's entirely

  355. supernatural.

  356. Look at verse 32.

  357. If you love those

  358. who love you,

  359. what benefit is that to you?

  360. Even sinners love

  361. those who love them.

  362. If you do good

  363. to those who do good to you,

  364. what benefit is that to you?

  365. Even sinners do the same.

  366. And if you lend to those

  367. from whom you expect

  368. to receive,

  369. what credit is that to you?

  370. Even sinners lend to sinners

  371. to get back the same amount.

  372. Listen,

  373. it's fine to hang out

  374. with friends,

  375. to host people for dinner

  376. who will invite you

  377. over next weekend,

  378. to do someone else a favor

  379. because they're doing

  380. a favor for you.

  381. That's fine.

  382. Just don't think

  383. it's unusual

  384. or particularly Christian.

  385. Do you want to be part

  386. of something

  387. that's not natural?

  388. To be part of something

  389. that is world-changing,

  390. that shakes the way

  391. things work

  392. and transforms

  393. a city or the world?

  394. Do you want to be part

  395. of something supernatural?

  396. Verse 35.

  397. Love your enemies.

  398. Do good.

  399. Lend expecting nothing

  400. in return

  401. and your reward

  402. will be great

  403. and you will be sons

  404. of the Most High

  405. for He is kind to whom?

  406. To the ungrateful

  407. and the evil.

  408. Be merciful

  409. even as your Father

  410. is merciful.

  411. When was the last time

  412. you loved somebody

  413. beyond their capability

  414. to love you back?

  415. When was the last time?

  416. The last time

  417. you had someone

  418. in your home

  419. who doesn't have

  420. enough of a home

  421. to invite you back

  422. into theirs?

  423. Gave to someone

  424. financially

  425. who does not have

  426. the means

  427. to pay you back

  428. and probably never will?

  429. Spoke well of someone

  430. and got them in somewhere

  431. when you know

  432. they have no intention

  433. of ever helping

  434. or speaking well

  435. of you.

  436. Spent time investing

  437. in a relationship

  438. with someone

  439. who could never

  440. benefit you socially.

  441. Prayed for God

  442. to bless someone

  443. that you know

  444. isn't praying for you

  445. unless it's

  446. an imprecatory psalm

  447. against you.

  448. Those are the ones

  449. about God please

  450. get the wicked.

  451. That may be the only thing

  452. they'd ever pray for you.

  453. Have you prayed for them?

  454. Jesus says

  455. pray

  456. for those

  457. who abuse you.

  458. It may be the first step

  459. we need to take.

  460. Man if

  461. several hundred of us

  462. took Jesus

  463. seriously

  464. on this thing

  465. it would be

  466. so transformative.

  467. I dare say

  468. it would change

  469. the character

  470. of this city

  471. if not

  472. the broader world

  473. if we actually

  474. lived

  475. like this.

  476. day in

  477. and day out

  478. it's not

  479. normal.

  480. It's supernatural.

  481. See that's what

  482. Jesus says

  483. be merciful

  484. even as your

  485. father

  486. is merciful.

  487. How's that?

  488. What's the

  489. mercy of God

  490. his

  491. grace

  492. his love

  493. look like

  494. toward us?

  495. It's this

  496. agape love

  497. we've been talking

  498. about this morning.

  499. One last thing

  500. about agape

  501. love

  502. in the Bible

  503. agape

  504. is most often

  505. God's

  506. love.

  507. Romans 5

  508. gives us

  509. one picture

  510. of it

  511. while we were

  512. still weak

  513. at the right

  514. time

  515. Christ died

  516. for the ungodly.

  517. God shows

  518. his love

  519. for us

  520. in that

  521. while we were

  522. still sinners

  523. Christ died

  524. for us.

  525. If while we were

  526. enemies

  527. we were

  528. reconciled

  529. to God

  530. by the

  531. death

  532. of his

  533. son

  534. much more

  535. now that

  536. we're

  537. reconciled

  538. shall we

  539. be saved

  540. by his

  541. life.

  542. We were

  543. enemies

  544. of God

  545. attacking

  546. him

  547. pushing

  548. away

  549. from him

  550. wishing

  551. harm

  552. on him

  553. even at

  554. times

  555. unknowingly

  556. by pursuing

  557. our own

  558. agendas

  559. rather than

  560. his

  561. wanting

  562. what we

  563. wanted

  564. rather than

  565. what he

  566. called us

  567. to.

  568. And he

  569. was

  570. for

  571. those

  572. who

  573. were

  574. against

  575. him

  576. loving

  577. unlovely

  578. enemies.

  579. In fact

  580. his

  581. love

  582. was

  583. actively

  584. sacrificial

  585. in its

  586. generosity.

  587. He gave

  588. of himself

  589. the higher

  590. bending

  591. down

  592. to the

  593. lower

  594. and sending

  595. his son

  596. for us.

  597. He poured

  598. himself

  599. out

  600. sacrificially

  601. not just

  602. giving

  603. until it

  604. hurt

  605. but even

  606. to the

  607. point

  608. of death

  609. and as

  610. he died

  611. praying

  612. father

  613. forgive

  614. them

  615. because

  616. we were

  617. so

  618. lovable

  619. he did

  620. that.

  621. Now

  622. weak

  623. ungodly

  624. enemies

  625. he did

  626. that

  627. to make

  628. a wretch

  629. his treasure

  630. in the words

  631. of the song

  632. we sang

  633. earlier.

  634. I know

  635. you've

  636. heard this

  637. before

  638. I'm not

  639. giving new

  640. information

  641. to most

  642. of you

  643. but just

  644. stop and

  645. marvel at

  646. that for

  647. a minute

  648. God

  649. loves

  650. you

  651. like

  652. that

  653. that's

  654. how

  655. merciful

  656. your

  657. heavenly

  658. father

  659. had been

  660. he could

  661. have had

  662. anything

  663. or anyone

  664. he wanted

  665. in his

  666. entire

  667. creation

  668. and he

  669. chose

  670. a wretch

  671. to be

  672. his

  673. treasure

  674. that's

  675. supernatural

  676. love

  677. I love

  678. the story

  679. Corrie

  680. Ten Boom

  681. tells

  682. of the day

  683. she met a

  684. man who

  685. had been

  686. a Nazi

  687. prison guard

  688. at the

  689. concentration

  690. camp where

  691. she had been

  692. a prisoner

  693. this man

  694. is an

  695. enemy

  696. whose face

  697. she could

  698. never forget

  699. she knew him

  700. as soon as

  701. she saw him

  702. there in

  703. Munich

  704. at a

  705. church

  706. where she

  707. was speaking

  708. on forgiveness

  709. and he

  710. comes

  711. running up

  712. to her

  713. afterwards

  714. and he

  715. said I've

  716. become a

  717. Christian

  718. I know

  719. God has

  720. forgiven me

  721. for all

  722. the cruel

  723. things I

  724. did

  725. but I

  726. want to

  727. hear it

  728. from your

  729. lips

  730. as well

  731. Fraulein

  732. will you

  733. forgive me

  734. she

  735. struggled

  736. she felt

  737. nothing

  738. warm

  739. at first

  740. there was

  741. no love

  742. for him

  743. in her

  744. then she

  745. remembered

  746. in that

  747. moment

  748. that Christ

  749. had died

  750. for this

  751. man

  752. how could

  753. she demand

  754. more payment

  755. from him

  756. and so she

  757. held out her

  758. hand with

  759. yet no words

  760. to say to

  761. him

  762. and suddenly

  763. she felt a

  764. love for the

  765. man that she

  766. never expected

  767. to come

  768. she writes

  769. this

  770. I had

  771. never

  772. known

  773. God's

  774. love

  775. so

  776. intensely

  777. as I

  778. did

  779. then

  780. so I

  781. discovered

  782. that it

  783. is not

  784. on our

  785. forgiveness

  786. she didn't

  787. have any

  788. of that

  789. in her

  790. any more

  791. than on

  792. our

  793. goodness

  794. that the

  795. world's

  796. healing

  797. hinges

  798. but on

  799. him

  800. when he

  801. tells us

  802. to love

  803. our enemies

  804. he gives

  805. along with

  806. the command

  807. the love

  808. itself

  809. isn't

  810. God like

  811. that

  812. doesn't

  813. he give

  814. exactly

  815. what he

  816. commands

  817. supernatural

  818. love

  819. that God

  820. has poured

  821. into us

  822. in the

  823. person

  824. of Jesus

  825. so that

  826. we are

  827. so full

  828. that we

  829. can give

  830. it away

  831. to others

  832. with no

  833. need of

  834. repayment

  835. there's

  836. something else

  837. about

  838. Corey's

  839. story

  840. that I

  841. really

  842. love

  843. she

  844. explains

  845. how

  846. dependent

  847. she

  848. remained

  849. on God

  850. to give

  851. her love

  852. for her

  853. enemies

  854. she

  855. writes

  856. further

  857. having

  858. thus

  859. in this

  860. situation

  861. with the

  862. prison guard

  863. learned to

  864. forgive

  865. in the

  866. hardest

  867. of

  868. situations

  869. I

  870. never

  871. again

  872. had

  873. difficulty

  874. in

  875. forgiving

  876. I

  877. wish

  878. I

  879. could

  880. say

  881. it

  882. if

  883. there's

  884. one

  885. thing

  886. I've

  887. learned

  888. at

  889. 80

  890. years

  891. of

  892. age

  893. it's

  894. that

  895. I

  896. can't

  897. store

  898. up

  899. good

  900. feelings

  901. and

  902. behavior

  903. but

  904. only

  905. draw

  906. them

  907. fresh

  908. from

  909. God

  910. each

  911. day

  912. she

  913. confesses

  914. as she

  915. writes

  916. this

  917. that as

  918. a 65

  919. year old

  920. some

  921. friends

  922. from her

  923. church

  924. wounded

  925. her

  926. deeply

  927. and that

  928. she

  929. harbored

  930. bitterness

  931. against

  932. them

  933. it

  934. became

  935. in her

  936. heart

  937. something

  938. that

  939. ate

  940. her up

  941. it

  942. caused

  943. her

  944. to have

  945. sleepless

  946. nights

  947. it

  948. caused

  949. her

  950. to

  951. be

  952. hateful

  953. towards

  954. them

  955. and she

  956. found

  957. that forgiving

  958. them

  959. was as

  960. supernatural

  961. and as

  962. much

  963. something

  964. she

  965. needed

  966. God's

  967. love

  968. for

  969. as

  970. forgiving

  971. the

  972. Nazi

  973. prison

  974. guard

  975. years

  976. before

  977. you see

  978. loving

  979. your enemies

  980. only comes

  981. by drawing

  982. fresh

  983. from God

  984. each

  985. day

  986. each

  987. situation

  988. each

  989. moment

  990. where the

  991. truth

  992. of God's

  993. love

  994. for us

  995. has to

  996. come

  997. to bear

  998. on that

  999. relationship

  1000. and that

  1001. conversation

  1002. it's his

  1003. supernatural

  1004. love

  1005. that we

  1006. share

  1007. you know

  1008. that's what

  1009. we mean

  1010. when we

  1011. talk at

  1012. Southwood

  1013. about expressing

  1014. grace

  1015. we don't

  1016. just mean

  1017. being

  1018. kind of

  1019. nice

  1020. and friendly

  1021. to nice

  1022. church

  1023. people

  1024. who are

  1025. nice

  1026. to you

  1027. and say

  1028. nice

  1029. things

  1030. about

  1031. you

  1032. and so

  1033. that's

  1034. expressing

  1035. the grace

  1036. that we've

  1037. received

  1038. hogwash

  1039. the grace

  1040. we've

  1041. received

  1042. is so much

  1043. bigger

  1044. than that

  1045. isn't

  1046. it

  1047. it's

  1048. so much

  1049. more

  1050. amazing

  1051. than that

  1052. the grace

  1053. we receive

  1054. is not

  1055. to a bunch

  1056. of nice

  1057. people

  1058. the grace

  1059. that's been

  1060. poured

  1061. into our

  1062. lives

  1063. is the

  1064. kind of

  1065. grace

  1066. where

  1067. wretches

  1068. become

  1069. treasures

  1070. expressing

  1071. grace

  1072. as this

  1073. self

  1074. sacrificing

  1075. enemy

  1076. pursuing

  1077. gratuitously

  1078. generous

  1079. intentionally

  1080. self

  1081. giving

  1082. love

  1083. permeating

  1084. all of

  1085. our lives

  1086. in every

  1087. relationship

  1088. even the ones

  1089. we don't

  1090. want to

  1091. have

  1092. it pushes

  1093. us

  1094. towards

  1095. them

  1096. that's the

  1097. kind of

  1098. supernatural

  1099. love

  1100. Jesus

  1101. calls

  1102. all his

  1103. followers

  1104. to have

  1105. it's not

  1106. just for

  1107. things I've

  1108. told stories

  1109. about this

  1110. morning

  1111. like

  1112. healing

  1113. racism

  1114. and

  1115. reconciling

  1116. world wars

  1117. too

  1118. I think

  1119. Corey's

  1120. story

  1121. reminds us

  1122. that

  1123. we all

  1124. have

  1125. people

  1126. in our

  1127. lives

  1128. who are

  1129. hard

  1130. to love

  1131. don't we

  1132. who comes

  1133. to mind

  1134. for you

  1135. who is it

  1136. in your

  1137. life

  1138. that's

  1139. hard

  1140. to love

  1141. for you

  1142. sometimes

  1143. it may

  1144. be a

  1145. spouse

  1146. sometimes

  1147. a child

  1148. sometimes

  1149. a parent

  1150. a boss

  1151. a homeless

  1152. beggar

  1153. a behaviorally

  1154. challenged

  1155. kid

  1156. in your

  1157. class

  1158. a socially

  1159. challenged

  1160. adult

  1161. in your

  1162. neighborhood

  1163. a fellow

  1164. church

  1165. member

  1166. and Jesus

  1167. says

  1168. in all of

  1169. those

  1170. situations

  1171. I've

  1172. poured

  1173. my love

  1174. into

  1175. you

  1176. so that

  1177. it would

  1178. overflow

  1179. from you

  1180. to them

  1181. that's

  1182. how it's

  1183. supposed to

  1184. work

  1185. beyond

  1186. what they

  1187. deserve

  1188. beyond

  1189. what you

  1190. can afford

  1191. that you

  1192. would love

  1193. that's

  1194. what it

  1195. looks like

  1196. to walk

  1197. around

  1198. in daddy's

  1199. footsteps

  1200. like the

  1201. little boy

  1202. you know

  1203. little boys

  1204. who want

  1205. to do

  1206. everything

  1207. just like

  1208. their dad

  1209. I want

  1210. to be

  1211. just like

  1212. dad

  1213. and they're

  1214. trying to

  1215. mimic

  1216. his

  1217. every

  1218. move

  1219. that's

  1220. what it

  1221. looks like

  1222. to be

  1223. merciful

  1224. as your

  1225. heavenly

  1226. father

  1227. is

  1228. merciful

  1229. Korean

  1230. pastor

  1231. Yang

  1232. Won

  1233. son

  1234. lost

  1235. his

  1236. two

  1237. eldest

  1238. sons

  1239. at the

  1240. hands

  1241. of

  1242. communist

  1243. rebels

  1244. who

  1245. murdered

  1246. them

  1247. during

  1248. an

  1249. uprising

  1250. in

  1251. 1948

  1252. shortly

  1253. after the

  1254. event

  1255. police

  1256. apprehended

  1257. a young

  1258. man

  1259. in

  1260. connection

  1261. to

  1262. their

  1263. murders

  1264. and

  1265. pastor

  1266. son

  1267. said

  1268. I demand

  1269. to speak

  1270. to that

  1271. man

  1272. who

  1273. killed

  1274. my

  1275. sons

  1276. when he

  1277. sat

  1278. before

  1279. his

  1280. great

  1281. enemy

  1282. for the

  1283. first

  1284. time

  1285. pastor

  1286. son

  1287. said

  1288. these

  1289. words

  1290. to him

  1291. don't

  1292. worry

  1293. I

  1294. have

  1295. already

  1296. forgiven

  1297. you

  1298. and

  1299. God

  1300. is

  1301. longing

  1302. to

  1303. forgive

  1304. you

  1305. too

  1306. he

  1307. asked

  1308. that

  1309. the

  1310. young

  1311. man

  1312. not

  1313. be

  1314. punished

  1315. but

  1316. instead

  1317. that

  1318. he

  1319. be

  1320. forgiven

  1321. released

  1322. actually

  1323. released

  1324. into

  1325. his

  1326. custody

  1327. to

  1328. be

  1329. adopted

  1330. as

  1331. his

  1332. son

  1333. in

  1334. place

  1335. of

  1336. the

  1337. two

  1338. sons

  1339. he

  1340. had

  1341. lost

  1342. at

  1343. the

  1377. I

  1411. isn't

  1412. it

  1413. that's

  1414. exactly

  1415. how

  1416. God

  1417. has

  1418. loved

  1419. us

  1420. who've

  1421. laid

  1422. our

  1424. on

  1425. his

  1433. that

  1458. to

  1459. you

  1485. like

  1486. our

  1488. father

  1489. let's

  1490. pray

  1491. father

  1492. thank you

  1493. for

  1494. your

  1495. love

  1496. because

  1497. we so

  1498. often

  1499. fashion

  1500. ourselves

  1501. as

  1502. good

  1503. people

  1504. we

  1505. forget

  1506. that

  1507. your

  1508. love

  1509. is

  1510. designed

  1511. to

  1512. seek

  1513. out

  1514. wretches

  1515. and

  1516. make

  1517. them

  1518. your

  1519. treasure

  1520. we'd

  1521. so

  1522. much

  1523. rather

  1524. love

  1525. good

  1526. people

  1527. than

  1528. be

  1529. called

  1530. to

  1531. seek

  1532. out

  1533. wretches

  1534. but

  1535. you're

  1536. making

  1537. us

  1538. to

  1539. share

  1540. your

  1541. heart

  1542. so

  1543. would

  1544. you

  1545. do

  1546. that

  1547. put

  1548. someone

  1549. on

  1550. our

  1551. minds

  1552. now

  1553. bring

  1554. someone

  1555. into

  1556. our

  1557. path

  1558. this

  1559. week

  1560. give

  1561. us

  1562. your

  1563. eyes

  1564. as

  1565. we

  1566. prayed

  1567. earlier

  1568. that

  1569. we

  1570. would

  1571. see

  1572. and

  1573. share

  1574. your

  1575. love

  1576. with

  1577. others

  1578. we

  1579. would

  1580. overlook

  1581. with

  1582. those

  1583. who

  1584. don't

  1585. deserve

  1586. it

  1587. with

  1588. those

  1589. we

  1590. are

  1591. certain

  1592. we

  1593. can't

  1594. afford

  1595. to

  1596. give

  1597. it

  1598. to

  1599. make

  1600. us

  1601. a

  1602. new

  1603. community

  1604. together

  1605. for

  1606. the

  1607. sake

  1608. of

  1609. your

  1610. kingdom

  1611. we

  1612. ask

  1613. in

  1614. Jesus

  1616. Amen
