  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. If you have a Bible with you, open them to Luke chapter 7.

    Luke 7 chapter mention

  5. We're continuing in our journey through the gospel of Luke.

  6. And this morning we're going to look at this situation here with Jesus meeting this Roman centurion

  7. where he begins to demonstrate a lot of things he has just taught in this sermon which we've just finished going through.

  8. So let me read for us from Luke 7, beginning of verse 1.

  9. We're going to read down through verse 10.

  10. After he had finished all his sayings and the hearing of the people, he entered Capernaum.

  11. Now a centurion had a servant who was sick and at the point of death who was highly valued by him.

  12. And when the centurion heard about Jesus, he sent to him elders of the Jews asking him to come and heal his servant.

  13. And when they came to Jesus, they pleaded with him earnestly saying,

  14. He is worthy to have you do this for him for he loves our nation and he is one who built us our synagogue.

  15. And Jesus went with them.

  16. But when he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends saying to him,

  17. Lord, do not trouble yourself for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof.

  18. Therefore, I did not presume to come to you.

  19. But say the word and let my servant be healed.

  20. For I too am a man set under authority with soldiers under me.

  21. And I say to one, go.

  22. And he goes.

  23. And to another, come.

  24. And he comes.

  25. And to my servant, do this.

  26. And he does it.

  27. And when Jesus heard these things, he marveled at him.

  28. And turning to the crowd that followed him said,

  29. I tell you, not even in Israel have I found such faith.

  30. And when those who had been sent returned to the house, they found the servant well.

  31. You know, one of the things I love about really the whole of the Bible,

  32. but especially when we come to the Gospels, is stories.

  33. I mean, I love stories.

  34. I think we all love stories.

  35. And one of the things about Luke, and it's a little different than especially, say, Matthew,

  36. Luke, we find very few extended sections that are just him explaining the kingdom.

  37. Where he's teaching us truths.

  38. Far more often than not, you have these stories that paint a picture of these principles that

  39. Jesus is communicating about the reality of this new kingdom that he brings in.

  40. And this is one of those examples.

  41. He's just finished, probably in the Gospel of Luke, the longest section of teaching that we have.

  42. But now, immediately, Luke is going to give us a pair of stories.

  43. And we're going to look at one this week and another one next week

  44. that illustrates all that he has just said about the kingdom.

  45. This week, we have the healing of this servant of a Gentile who expresses faith.

  46. But then next week, we're going to see how he returns a dead son alive to his widowed mother.

  47. And both of these are going to reflect something different about the kingdom.

  48. And in some ways, they are both scandalous.

  49. Because they fly directly in the face of common thought.

  50. And so today, we're going to look at the kingdom, and we're going to look at kingdom faith.

  51. What does kingdom faith look like?

  52. You know, and you have to say, when you say that you have faith, when you say your friends have faith,

  53. what do you look for in yourself or in someone else that says, yeah, they really do have faith?

  54. And if it's true faith, you know, what distinguishes that?

  55. So as Jesus just taught in this previous sermon, that you'll know a tree by its fruits.

  56. And so he says, a good tree is going to produce good fruits.

  57. A bad tree produces bad fruit.

  58. You know that tree by the fruit it produces.

  59. What does the kingdom, what does faith, this kingdom faith, produce in us

  60. that demonstrates that fruit of the kingdom?

  61. And so Luke is going to show us in this section.

  62. Again, it's a scandalous section in a couple of ways.

  63. But he's going to show us and demonstrate for us what this kingdom faith is.

  64. And if you really do want to impress Jesus, this is how to do it.

  65. So, really we just see two things.

  66. The first is kingdom faith.

  67. It's always in a downward movement.

  68. We're going to see it in both of these.

  69. But it first moves downward in humility.

  70. Here's the story.

  71. What's going on here?

  72. Jesus has just finished teaching.

  73. And now he is moving towards Capernaum with this huge posse with him.

  74. In some ways, Luke at this point doesn't even give it much thought.

  75. Though we're going to see it come into play in the next story.

  76. Jesus has just finished teaching about all this new system of values.

  77. And now he's going to demonstrate in a very clear, very major way what he was trying to explain.

  78. And so as he's approaching the city, he is met by this group of Jewish elders.

  79. These are leaders in this community.

  80. And they've been sent to him on behalf of a Roman centurion.

  81. See, that in itself would make us scratch our heads.

  82. Because what do these Jews, what are they having to do, what do they have to do with this Roman centurion?

  83. These Romans were the occupying army.

  84. They were the force in Palestine then, in Israel, that the Jews hated.

  85. They hated them almost as much as they did Samaritans.

  86. But they hated the Romans because typically Roman centurions were not nice people.

  87. They could be, in many occasions, brutal.

  88. They were captors.

  89. They were occupiers.

  90. And the Jews were captives.

  91. And so many times that's the way they treated them.

  92. So what's going on here?

  93. The Jews have come to Jesus, these Jewish leaders,

  94. and they're kind of pleading this guy's case.

  95. They're making a case with Jesus that this guy deserves Jesus' help.

  96. That's a little weird.

  97. What are they doing?

  98. Well, is this Roman actually that nice a guy?

  99. Maybe.

  100. Maybe.

  101. I mean, we see here, the way Luke describes him, he's got a tender heart, especially towards this servant of his.

  102. And he's obviously done some good things for the Jewish community.

  103. So maybe there's something very tender about him and that he has indeed won the affections of his captives.

  104. There might be something else going on here.

  105. The way that society operated and worked in these kind of situations was on a quid pro quo basis.

  106. Jesus, if I do good for you, that means you owe me.

  107. And so what the Romans would do sometimes with their captives is, you know, the centurion spent money, you know, built their synagogue and so forth.

  108. But what he could be doing here with that is buying peace.

  109. I'll build your synagogue.

  110. You don't give me any trouble.

  111. And so the Jews, in a sense, you know, maybe what he's doing here with these Jewish elders is calling in his debts.

  112. So, yeah, maybe he did love this servant of his and this servant was obviously very valuable.

  113. And so he needed help.

  114. And now he has heard that there's this guy named Jesus out here who could bring life and healing back to my servant.

  115. So, the elders come and are trying to build a case for this centurion's worthiness.

  116. That word worthy is the key here.

  117. It's one of these key ideas because, you know, the Jews operate on this basis as well.

  118. What you do, how you behave, your standing in society, all of that makes you worthy.

  119. And the basic meaning of that word worthy is kind of substantive or heavy.

  120. You have weight to your life or you are valuable.

  121. You are somebody.

  122. And that is, you find worth on the basis of how you live, the good things you do, and so forth.

  123. And so that's the system.

  124. That's simply the way the world works here.

  125. And it's the way the Jews are working.

  126. Yes, this guy was a foreigner.

  127. Yes, in normal circumstances, they wouldn't have anything to do with him.

  128. But in this case, they are coming and trying to build a case.

  129. Now, the amazing thing here is Jesus goes.

  130. He never says a word about it.

  131. He just goes with him.

  132. And now what this does, it sets up a whole new crisis.

  133. Because a centurion hears that he's coming.

  134. And there's something else about society.

  135. This Jewish teacher cannot come into the house of a Gentile.

  136. And so, the centurion in some ways panics.

  137. And he sends a whole different group of people to Jesus.

  138. These are not Jewish elders that he's using to get something.

  139. Now he's got friends.

  140. And now they're saying something whole different.

  141. Something totally different about this Roman.

  142. He's not worthy.

  143. He's a Roman.

  144. He says, I am not worthy for you to enter under my roof.

  145. Enter into my house.

  146. And the word that their centurion uses.

  147. It's like, I'm insufficient.

  148. I am a nobody.

  149. In regard to you, comparison to you, I am not enough for you to care.

  150. And so, from a distance, he sends these friends to Jesus.

  151. Because basically, the Gentile says, I have no right to expect you to help me.

  152. But, you know, if you just say the word, which we'll look at in just a minute.

  153. But there is in this world this system of worth and value.

  154. And unfortunately, in that system, it's all based on what you do.

  155. Who you are.

  156. And this is what Jesus came to bring it into.

  157. Unfortunately, that same kind of system is what we have here.

  158. What makes you think that you are worthy to expect Jesus to come to you and to give you help?

  159. You know, help is given to those who are worthy of it.

  160. You know, we operate this way.

  161. If someone were to come to you and ask for financial help, they need money from you.

  162. What are you looking for in them that would make them worthy of your help?

  163. What if they were standing there puffing on a cigarette in front of you?

  164. What if they had the smell of alcohol on their breath?

  165. What if they were dressed very clearly as if they belonged to another religion?

  166. What would disqualify them from you giving them help?

  167. Would they be worthy?

  168. What makes us worthy?

  169. To ask and to expect something.

  170. But, you know, that is as big a question as that is.

  171. How do you approach God yourself?

  172. You need Him to work for you?

  173. You need something?

  174. You've got something going on in your life?

  175. And it's very, very dear to you.

  176. What gives you the right to go before God and expect Him to answer your prayer and to meet you in that need?

  177. Have you done enough?

  178. Are you good enough?

  179. You know, a few years ago, well, let me just say this first.

  180. A lot of us know intellectually that there's nothing we can do.

  181. But that's not the way we function.

  182. Some years ago, when not long I had actually become a Christian,

  183. I joined the staff of Campus Crusade for Christ.

  184. I was going to become a missionary.

  185. And I had, I was at new staff training,

  186. and they were trying to decide where I should fit,

  187. what ministry I should go into.

  188. And I had just auditioned for the music ministry.

  189. Not very well, I might say.

  190. But I auditioned.

  191. And that's where I really wanted to be placed.

  192. I didn't want to go just work on a college campus somewhere.

  193. I wanted to work with these music groups that they had.

  194. And so, you know, in that anxious time of waiting,

  195. and this was something I really, really wanted.

  196. And so I decided, you know, maybe I ought to pray about this.

  197. But I was like, oh, my God.

  198. And so I remember, I went up one evening.

  199. They had a, at the camp, the staff training grounds where I was,

  200. they had a chapel.

  201. And so I decided, let me, I'm just, I'm going to go up there

  202. in the quiet and the private, and I'm going to pray.

  203. But as I went up there and started praying, I realized something.

  204. That's the first time I had really prayed in a long time.

  205. I hadn't really, as far as my time and efforts go,

  206. I hadn't paid God much attention at all.

  207. Yeah, I was in training to be a missionary.

  208. And I wasn't in his word.

  209. I wasn't praying.

  210. And there were just other things in my life that were inconsistent

  211. with all of this.

  212. And it hit me that God, and I just started kind of rattling all this off.

  213. And I said, I really don't have much right to ask you for this.

  214. And it was kind of like, you know, this is a very un-Presbyterian thing.

  215. It was almost like God actually responded.

  216. To that prayer.

  217. And as clear as it could be in my mind, this thought came.

  218. And it says, okay, what difference would it have made

  219. if you had done all those things?

  220. Would you be more worthy?

  221. Well, no.

  222. See, I was very, very determined to make myself acceptable.

  223. I was determined that I was going to make myself good enough

  224. where I could be approved because I'd behaved well enough

  225. so that God would, that I would feel confident

  226. that God would actually come and take my desires to heart

  227. and meet me and answer my prayer.

  228. I was trying to be worthy.

  229. Well, what's keeping you from asking God

  230. for something that's very, very dear to your heart?

  231. And I don't know what that might be.

  232. It might be something that you really want.

  233. It might be him taking away something you really don't want.

  234. But that request, what is it?

  235. And see, a lot of times we hesitate

  236. to come before God because,

  237. yeah, I'm not good with devotional times.

  238. Oh, yeah, I've been going the wrong places on my computer.

  239. Oh, yeah, I mean, I have just yelled at my kids

  240. for the seventh time and it's barely lunch.

  241. Why would I think that God would listen to me?

  242. Why would I think he would have anything to do with my desires?

  243. See, in the old system,

  244. worthiness is on what we do.

  245. But there's a new system.

  246. And Jesus went to the Gentiles' home

  247. without a word, without hesitation,

  248. because there's a new system.

  249. That those who are the least worthy

  250. can be made worthy,

  251. but not because of their lineage,

  252. not because of their religion,

  253. not because of their behavior,

  254. but because of what he was about to do.

  255. The Holy One of Israel

  256. was about to embrace unworthiness.

  257. The Holy One of Israel

  258. was about to enter in the sewer

  259. of human depravity

  260. and take it away.

  261. And he was going to embrace it

  262. so that us who are lost in it

  263. and stuck in it

  264. we who cannot be good enough

  265. ever

  266. can be made

  267. worthy.

  268. And how worthy has he made us?

  269. that same Holy One

  270. of Israel

  271. has now declared

  272. that through his work,

  273. through his death,

  274. through his intervention,

  275. has made me

  276. not only acceptable enough

  277. that he would enter

  278. into my dwelling,

  279. he's chosen to take up residence there.

  280. the Holy One

  281. has cleansed me

  282. so fully,

  283. so completely,

  284. and has made me

  285. so ultimately

  286. beautiful

  287. that he

  288. says,

  289. I'll come.

  290. No problem.

  291. I'm on my way.

  292. There's nothing

  293. to keep us

  294. from inviting him

  295. and expecting him

  296. to hear us

  297. and to

  298. bless us.

  299. Nothing.

  300. Faith

  301. embraces

  302. the humility

  303. of unworthiness

  304. because

  305. we have a Savior

  306. that we trust

  307. and makes us worthy.

  308. Secondly,

  309. faith

  310. moving downward

  311. now in submission.

  312. You know,

  313. when the centurion,

  314. and this is the part

  315. that sometimes

  316. we might scratch our heads

  317. about this,

  318. and this is okay,

  319. as soon as,

  320. you know,

  321. with the second group of people

  322. he sends them to Jesus,

  323. and the reason

  324. he tells Jesus,

  325. no,

  326. don't come,

  327. he gets into this

  328. discussion of authority

  329. and it's kind of

  330. this hierarchy

  331. of authority.

  332. And what's this

  333. all about?

  334. And he says,

  335. Jesus,

  336. look,

  337. just say the word

  338. because I understand

  339. authority.

  340. I mean,

  341. I'm a centurion.

  342. I got guys under me.

  343. I tell one,

  344. do this,

  345. and he does it,

  346. and go here,

  347. and he goes,

  348. and so all you've

  349. got to do

  350. is say the word.

  351. And see,

  352. obviously,

  353. the centurion

  354. has heard the stories

  355. about Jesus

  356. and what he's doing

  357. and how he's not only

  358. teaching with authority,

  359. he's been working

  360. with authority,

  361. something that

  362. the Jewish elders

  363. in a lot of ways

  364. were blind to,

  365. but he's caught on.

  366. This guy's got authority,

  367. and he can speak,

  368. and all he's got to do

  369. is speak,

  370. and it's done.

  371. And so he's,

  372. this centurion

  373. is submitting himself

  374. to the authority

  375. of Jesus.

  376. And Jesus hears this.

  377. Jesus was impressed.

  378. The text says

  379. he marveled.

  380. And he says,

  381. in all Israel,

  382. and here's the scandal

  383. of the story,

  384. in all Israel,

  385. I have not seen

  386. such faith,

  387. and that faith

  388. came from a

  389. scum

  390. Roman centurion.

  391. because he understood

  392. the dynamics

  393. of a new kingdom.

  394. This is huge.

  395. This whole idea

  396. of authority

  397. is huge

  398. for me.

  399. For the centurion,

  400. he was dealing

  401. with this physical illness

  402. of this beloved servant,

  403. and all he knew

  404. that all Jesus

  405. had to do

  406. was to speak

  407. into this,

  408. and this servant

  409. would be healed.

  410. you know,

  411. for us,

  412. the issue

  413. might be

  414. a little less material.

  415. You know,

  416. what has Jesus

  417. already said to me

  418. about me

  419. that I simply

  420. do not believe

  421. or that I openly

  422. reject

  423. and that I cannot,

  424. I will not

  425. accept?

  426. what has he said?

  427. What has he already

  428. declared?

  429. Well,

  430. who's the one

  431. in your life?

  432. And I have

  433. asked the question,

  434. you know,

  435. who's the one

  436. in my life

  437. that actually

  438. has the authority

  439. to speak

  440. into my heart

  441. and I will submit

  442. and believe

  443. and accept

  444. what they say?

  445. Is it a parent?

  446. Maybe a spouse?

  447. Do we live

  448. with parents

  449. who are speaking

  450. into our lives

  451. and what they're saying

  452. actually is not

  453. very good

  454. but yet we believe

  455. and we live

  456. under this burden

  457. of what they're

  458. declaring about us?

  459. are we living

  460. in slavery

  461. to certain people

  462. because we need

  463. their words

  464. to speak

  465. into us

  466. that we actually

  467. have value?

  468. Who is it

  469. in your life

  470. that can speak

  471. and you're going

  472. to believe

  473. and accept

  474. and embrace?

  475. Who has the authority?

  476. You know,

  477. because of these voices

  478. sometimes we can

  479. either feel

  480. very defeated,

  481. very worthless,

  482. very small,

  483. enslaved.

  484. You know,

  485. some of the loudest

  486. voices that we believe

  487. unfortunately

  488. are our own.

  489. we don't need

  490. somebody else.

  491. Some of those voices

  492. simply say,

  493. I'll look in the mirror

  494. and it says,

  495. I'm a failure,

  496. I am a zero.

  497. I am insignificant.

  498. I mean nothing

  499. to no one.

  500. Now,

  501. what I'm talking

  502. about here

  503. in getting into

  504. is not

  505. psychological

  506. gymnastics.

  507. Psychology

  508. today

  509. will tell you,

  510. you know,

  511. you might think

  512. this is just

  513. well,

  514. positive speak.

  515. We need to have

  516. positive messages.

  517. We need to speak

  518. to ourselves

  519. and listen to

  520. the positive messages

  521. that people give us

  522. and ignore

  523. the negative ones

  524. and so that we can

  525. have a better image

  526. of ourselves

  527. and you know,

  528. I'm not talking

  529. about that

  530. because what

  531. psychology does

  532. unfortunately

  533. is just saying

  534. giving us

  535. positive messages

  536. and they're

  537. ignoring the truth

  538. and what is the

  539. truth?

  540. truth.

  541. One of my

  542. spiritual mentors

  543. had this saying

  544. and he says,

  545. you know,

  546. when people

  547. criticize you,

  548. rejoice

  549. because it's not

  550. anything as bad

  551. as the reality.

  552. reality.

  553. What modern

  554. psychology today

  555. does is ignore

  556. the reality.

  557. I am unworthy.

  558. I am broken.

  559. I'm a mess.

  560. And this is

  561. the paradox

  562. or the crazy

  563. thing about

  564. Christianity

  565. because what

  566. Christianity says,

  567. what the gospel

  568. says about it,

  569. the gospel is

  570. by far the most

  571. absolutely negative

  572. message we could

  573. hear,

  574. but at the same

  575. time the most

  576. glorious.

  577. Because the gospel

  578. says you are far

  579. worse than you

  580. ever believed.

  581. But you're far

  582. more beloved

  583. than you ever

  584. dreamed.

  585. And so the voice

  586. of Jesus

  587. says what

  588. to us?

  589. it says,

  590. yep,

  591. you got a

  592. problem.

  593. You got a

  594. big one.

  595. You have no

  596. clue.

  597. You're a broken

  598. mess

  599. and there's not

  600. one single thing

  601. you can do

  602. to take care

  603. of it.

  604. He doesn't

  605. stop there.

  606. what does

  607. he also

  608. say?

  609. You're

  610. forgiven.

  611. You're

  612. accepted.

  613. You're

  614. approved.

  615. You are

  616. righteous.

  617. You are

  618. beloved.

  619. You are

  620. beloved.

  621. Now

  622. how are you

  623. going to

  624. listen to?

  625. does

  626. Jesus

  627. have

  628. the

  629. authority

  630. to speak

  631. truth

  632. into your

  633. heart?

  634. Because

  635. this is

  636. the truth.

  637. This is

  638. what he

  639. comes to

  640. do.

  641. faith

  642. always

  643. begins

  644. moving

  645. downward.

  646. Always.

  647. It is

  648. grasping

  649. the truth

  650. of my

  651. unworthiness.

  652. But

  653. faith

  654. also

  655. submits

  656. to the

  657. declaration

  658. that comes

  659. from the

  660. cross

  661. that it

  662. is

  663. finished.

  664. That we

  665. who believe

  666. him are

  667. in

  668. Christ.

  669. And

  670. there is

  671. now no

  672. barrier

  673. to keep

  674. us

  675. away.

  676. To keep

  677. us from

  678. expecting

  679. anything

  680. other

  681. than

  682. God's

  683. ultimate

  684. good.

  685. That is

  686. kingdom

  687. faith.

  688. Is that

  689. what you

  690. have?

  691. Is that

  692. yours?

  693. Are you

  694. still living

  695. a life

  696. trying to

  697. improve

  698. so you'll

  699. get a

  700. hearing?

  701. Are you

  702. still living

  703. a life

  704. that's

  705. trying to

  706. earn it

  707. on your

  708. own?

  709. Are you

  710. still

  711. or have

  712. you just

  713. maybe

  714. given up

  715. and you

  716. quit asking

  717. God for

  718. anything

  719. because you

  720. can't get

  721. there?

  722. Let's see a

  723. new system

  724. has come

  725. inaugurated

  726. by the

  727. king

  728. himself

  729. that it's

  730. not up to

  731. you.

  732. You come

  733. to him

  734. and he

  735. takes care

  736. of all

  737. of it.

  738. In

  739. Christ

  740. through

  741. going down

  742. and accepting

  743. your unworthiness

  744. submitting

  745. ourselves to

  746. his declaration

  747. of us

  748. we can

  749. fully

  750. expect

  751. this good

  752. king

  753. to hear

  754. our cries

  755. and to

  756. meet us

  757. in our

  758. needs

  759. because he

  760. has declared

  761. us worthy.

  762. Let's pray.

  763. Father

  764. what you

  765. have done

  766. to make

  767. us your

  768. own

  769. what you

  770. have done

  771. to make

  772. us suitable

  773. for you

  774. to dwell

  775. a place

  776. where you

  777. can dwell

  778. what you

  779. have done

  780. to make

  781. us

  782. your very

  783. sons and

  784. daughters

  785. oh

  786. father

  787. would you

  788. speak

  789. truth

  790. into our

  791. hearts

  792. expose

  793. our

  794. natural

  795. brokenness

  796. expose

  797. that

  798. unworthiness

  799. that we

  800. did earn

  801. but then

  802. show us

  803. the ultimate

  804. gift

  805. of the

  806. cross

  807. where all

  808. was done

  809. show us

  810. that we

  811. might more

  812. fully

  813. and readily

  814. run to

  815. you

  816. with our

  817. hearts

  818. with our

  819. needs

  820. we pray

  821. in Jesus

  822. name

  823. amen
