  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. If you have your Bibles with you, open them to the Gospel of Luke as we continue our study.

  4. Once again, we'll be reading in Luke 7, beginning at verse 11 and reading down through verse 17.

  5. If you don't have a Bible, you'll see the words on the screen so you can follow along as I read.

  6. So here now, the Gospels, we see it, we hear it from Luke 7, beginning at verse 11.

  7. Soon afterward, he went to a town called Nain.

  8. And his disciples and a great crowd went with him.

  9. And he drew near to the gate of the town.

  10. As he drew near to the gate of the town, behold, a man who had died was being carried out,

  11. the only son of his mother.

  12. And she was a widow.

  13. And a considerable crowd from the town was with her.

  14. When the Lord saw her, he had compassion on her.

  15. And he said to her, do not weep.

  16. Then he came up and touched the bier.

  17. And the bearers stood still.

  18. And he said, young man, I say to you, arise.

  19. And the dead man sat up and began to speak.

  20. And Jesus gave him to his mother.

  21. And fear seized them all.

  22. And they glorified God, saying, a great prophet has arisen among us.

  23. And God has visited his people.

  24. And this report about him spread through the whole of Judea and all the surrounding country.

  25. As we just sang to cling to the crucified, let's pray together as I lead us that indeed as we go through the study of his word,

  26. that is where he'll take us to the crucified.

  27. Let's pray.

  28. Father, would you grant us the gift of your spirit?

  29. Would you help us to know you?

  30. Would you open up your word to us?

  31. We come in here to this place with so many things that potentially could distract us, could take our attention, could draw us away.

  32. But Father, would you pierce through all that?

  33. Would you shine the light of truth into our hearts?

  34. But not just truth.

  35. Would you shine the light of your glory?

  36. All that you are.

  37. And draw us into a deeper, fuller knowledge of you.

  38. Would you reveal to us the crucified?

  39. The one who died.

  40. The one who died.

  41. The one who lived for us.

  42. But yet the one who was raised.

  43. Would you draw us to him?

  44. And we pray in the name of the living word, our Lord Jesus.

  45. Amen.

  46. Amen.

  47. You know, if you remember back a couple months ago, as we were going through Luke, we were in chapter 4.

  48. And Jesus, as his ministry commenced, he preached his first sermon at a synagogue in Nazareth.

  49. And he quoted, he read words from Isaiah the prophet, Isaiah 61.

  50. And as Luke gives it to us in chapter 4, verses 18 and 19, Jesus said this.

  51. He said,

  52. Of course, right after reading these words, he takes his hearers back farther into the Old Testament,

  53. and tells them two stories.

  54. Stories of which almost got him killed prematurely.

  55. Of course, we know that was not going to happen, but still.

  56. One of those stories was about a Syrian general named Naaman.

  57. And Naaman had leprosy.

  58. And Naaman went to, heard of this great healing power that was with Elisha.

  59. And so he went to Israel to see Elisha that he might be cured.

  60. And we see a parallel of that story in the story that we looked at last week with the Roman centurion and his servant.

  61. This week, we see another parallel because the other story that Jesus referred to was a widow in Sidon.

  62. A non-Jew who had an only son who died.

  63. And she called on help from Elijah, the great prophet.

  64. And Elijah, through a miraculous intervention of the Spirit of God, was able to raise this widow's son from the dead.

  65. And here, now we see another parallel.

  66. And so what is Jesus doing in all this?

  67. Jesus is drawing direct parallels to this time where God came and visited his people.

  68. In those particular stories with the widow of Sidon and Naaman the Syrian demonstrated this.

  69. But now Luke is doing the same thing.

  70. Except he's doing it in an even bigger way.

  71. Because now it's not just a great prophet that has come to Israel.

  72. But God himself.

  73. The key, the main theme of all that Jesus was coming to do, we see in that sermon, in those words that he spoke way back in Nazareth.

  74. In chapter 4.

  75. And the theme is this.

  76. Is that I, the Redeemer, have come to bring release.

  77. Release from the captives.

  78. Release from those who are oppressed.

  79. And in these two accounts that we see of the centurion and this widow from Nain.

  80. We see the ministry of release that Jesus proclaimed is now demonstrated in a very tangible form.

  81. And so we not only hear about release that's coming, we see it.

  82. And so this is what I want to turn our attention to, particularly in this story of the widow.

  83. How we see redemption unfold in these very tangible situations.

  84. The first thing I want us to see here is how in redemption despair is turned to hope.

  85. What we've got here is a story of a widow.

  86. And this is a very, this is a far more desperate situation that you might initially realize.

  87. For a widow, a widow in that culture was in many ways the most desperate of people.

  88. A woman was dependent upon her husband to not only provide for her and to care for her and all of her material needs.

  89. She really found much of her place in society through him.

  90. And then if something happened to him, then her son, her offspring would then take care of her for the rest of her days.

  91. This woman is on her way to a funeral.

  92. And unfortunately, it's a path she's already been on once before.

  93. She had a husband and one son.

  94. Her husband, we don't know how long ago, died.

  95. But it wasn't that terribly long ago because this man who was on this funeral bar was a young man.

  96. The words that are used here is that he was more likely a teenager who died very prematurely.

  97. And so now she is at the head of this large procession coming out of this village.

  98. A most desperate, helpless, alone widow.

  99. And you imagine, I mean, the grief that she bears over losing a son.

  100. And I know some of you here have experienced that.

  101. But that grief was just multiplied because she is now looking at hopelessness.

  102. She has no one.

  103. No one to care for her.

  104. No one to provide for her.

  105. She is a most desperate woman.

  106. And so to this widow, Jesus brings the ministry of release.

  107. He meets her.

  108. And it's interesting.

  109. This whole setting, it's like there's a collision of two worlds.

  110. You see this great crowd of people coming out of the city, out of the gate of the village,

  111. right when another crowd is just about to come.

  112. And so they meet with Jesus right in the middle.

  113. And Jesus does three things.

  114. The first thing he does, if you look at the text, he says he felt compassion.

  115. And I love that, but this is a strong word.

  116. In other words, Jesus felt this woman's pain and desperation and hopelessness down in his gut.

  117. He embraced her pain.

  118. He knew her pain.

  119. This is what we would call empathy.

  120. But yet even more than that.

  121. He had compassion on her.

  122. He was willing to enter into that pain to the point that he knew what she felt.

  123. He didn't hurt just for her.

  124. He hurt with her.

  125. When Jesus comes to us, he doesn't just know about our struggle.

  126. He knows our struggle.

  127. He knows it personally.

  128. He knows it intimately.

  129. He enters into it.

  130. And he doesn't just throw little help grenades from the outside.

  131. But he dives into it himself and helps us there.

  132. You know, how can he enter into this kind of pain?

  133. How can he do that even with us?

  134. Well, with this woman in particular, he knows.

  135. He knows.

  136. And he will know very, very soon.

  137. Because of his close relationship with his father, who will lose his only son.

  138. But in this life, Jesus comes in full humanity.

  139. He comes into our world.

  140. He doesn't help us from afar.

  141. He comes into life to help us.

  142. He knows what it means for us to hurt.

  143. I love the words from Hebrews 4, verse 15 through 16, where the writer there says,

    Hebrews 4:15–16

  144. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses,

  145. but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.

  146. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace that we may receive mercy

  147. and find grace to help in time of need.

  148. You know, some years ago when we lived overseas, that was a really hard time for me.

  149. It was a time where I struggled with depression because life was just hard.

  150. I got some severe tension headaches every time I heard the gate bell ring and somebody speaking Hungarian.

  151. Because I didn't know if they were come collecting money or they were going to turn off my water or what.

  152. But you add all this stuff, it was really hard.

  153. And so I looked to find some help, somebody to talk to, somebody that I can engage with.

  154. To guide me and just help steer me through this really hard time.

  155. But I wanted somebody who had lived as a missionary,

  156. who had struggled as a missionary,

  157. who had followed Christ faithfully as a missionary.

  158. I wanted someone, I had to have somebody who understood,

  159. who knew what I was going through because they had been where I was.

  160. But that's what we get with Jesus.

  161. He has been tempted in every way.

  162. He has faced every struggle.

  163. He knows.

  164. He knows.

  165. Intimately and personally.

  166. Just like he did with this woman.

  167. But the second thing he does with her

  168. is he tells her to stop crying.

  169. And you might think this a little strange.

  170. I mean, if I was at a funeral and I walked up to the,

  171. to a widow who had just lost her husband

  172. and said, ah, stop crying,

  173. I'd probably get slapped.

  174. And I should.

  175. So what, what's Jesus doing here?

  176. Well, there's, the big difference here with him

  177. is that he knew what was coming.

  178. He knew what was about to happen.

  179. And because he knows the end of the story,

  180. he can say, hey, hey, don't cry.

  181. Just wait and see what's coming.

  182. She was about to experience something

  183. that was beyond her wildest imaginations

  184. because her dead son she was going to walk home with

  185. in just a few minutes.

  186. You know, we see throughout the scriptures

  187. what Jesus tells us.

  188. He commands us over and over and over again

  189. to rejoice.

  190. To celebrate.

  191. To be filled with joy.

  192. Rejoice.

  193. Again, I'll say rejoice.

  194. Though your life may be full of trouble right now.

  195. Rejoice.

  196. And we think, what?

  197. But those commands to rejoice point us to something.

  198. And he tells us to rejoice

  199. because he knows the end of the story.

  200. He's not just caught up in the moment.

  201. He knows where it's all going.

  202. And in a sense, what he's saying to us is,

  203. guys, just wait.

  204. Just wait a minute.

  205. What's coming is beyond your wildest imagination.

  206. Just hang on.

  207. Rejoice.

  208. Oh, it's going to be good.

  209. He knows the rest of the story.

  210. This is one of the things I love about being a Christian.

  211. You know, oftentimes we're,

  212. you go buy a book

  213. and the last thing you were tempted to

  214. jump to the end and read that final chapter

  215. because I want to know who did it.

  216. I don't know how it was done.

  217. And then you maybe go back and read the rest.

  218. But we know that takes a lot of the fun

  219. and the mystery out of the story.

  220. Well, Jesus does that for us intentionally.

  221. He says, read the end.

  222. It's good.

  223. And then go back

  224. and look at the rest.

  225. And so even though we struggle,

  226. even though we're in the midst of pain and hardship

  227. at the moment,

  228. Jesus said, hang on.

  229. Story's not over.

  230. It ends up really good.

  231. You know, but then finally,

  232. Jesus says to the son,

  233. I love this.

  234. He says, not to the woman, but to the son.

  235. He says, I say to you, arise.

  236. And as soon as he does it,

  237. or before he does it,

  238. he does something else.

  239. If you'll notice this little detail here

  240. is that he reaches out and touches the buyer.

  241. That is, it's kind of like a stretcher

  242. or a platform that is carrying this dead body.

  243. And Jesus reaches out and touches it.

  244. You're not supposed to do that.

  245. Because anything that touches that,

  246. anything that's associated with death

  247. can ceremonially pollute

  248. and make unclean whoever touches it.

  249. Jesus intentionally,

  250. he could have told the guys carrying it,

  251. just say, hold up a second.

  252. He doesn't do that.

  253. He touches it.

  254. Why is this?

  255. It's because he is about to enter into

  256. this very death

  257. of this young man.

  258. And he's, it also says that Jesus gives him back to his mother.

  259. And he does so

  260. because

  261. this son's death.

  262. Jesus just made his own.

  263. He touched it

  264. because he was taking that death upon himself.

  265. He was going to die.

  266. But he also was going to be raised.

  267. As we see the young man sitting up.

  268. But this is what Jesus has come to do.

  269. He has come to enter into the darkness,

  270. enter into our hopelessness,

  271. enter into our struggle.

  272. And he embraces it

  273. and takes it upon himself.

  274. He doesn't just tell us about it.

  275. He makes it his own.

  276. And he breaks the hold.

  277. And he gives us release.

  278. So what are we struggling with?

  279. Something going on in your life

  280. that's kind of given you a sense of hopelessness,

  281. a sense of struggle,

  282. and says, you don't know what you're going to do.

  283. You don't know where you're going to go.

  284. You don't know how you're going to get out of this.

  285. You need somebody to set you free.

  286. Jesus enters into that.

  287. And he says, come to me.

  288. I made it my own.

  289. So that you can now be set free.

  290. Jesus not only replaces

  291. hopelessness or despair

  292. with hope.

  293. He also replaces death

  294. with life.

  295. And this is the second thing we have to know.

  296. This is a head-on collision

  297. between this crowd and this woman.

  298. And this woman following this path

  299. that's become all too familiar,

  300. heading to the graveyard,

  301. heading to the grave

  302. where the son was going to be laid.

  303. And the only thing that was standing in her way

  304. was Jesus.

  305. And Jesus stopped everything.

  306. That young man was going to be laid

  307. next to his father,

  308. except today,

  309. Jesus interrupted that journey.

  310. You know, Hebrews 12,

  311. or Hebrews 2,

  312. excuse me,

  313. verse 14 and 15 says this.

  314. Since therefore the children share

  315. in flesh and blood,

  316. he himself likewise partook of the same things,

  317. that through death

  318. he might destroy the one

  319. who has the power of death,

  320. that is the devil,

  321. and deliver all those

  322. who through fear of death

  323. were subject to lifelong slavery.

  324. You know, this is the part of the sermon

  325. that not too many preachers

  326. really like to preach,

  327. to preach about death.

  328. But there's something pretty critical

  329. for us to understand.

  330. Because unfortunately,

  331. if you haven't heard

  332. or gotten the memo,

  333. all of us are going to face death.

  334. It is part of the curse

  335. that we have inherited from Adam

  336. because of his disobedience.

  337. He was promised death

  338. in all of those who follow him.

  339. And because he didn't do

  340. what he was supposed to,

  341. every one of us have a common,

  342. a common end.

  343. And we can't avoid it.

  344. We are cursed with death.

  345. But yet it's the fear of death

  346. that enslaves us.

  347. I mean, we will do anything.

  348. What?

  349. You don't talk about it.

  350. You don't want to think about it.

  351. We're doing everything we can

  352. to avoid it.

  353. You know, our medicine cabinets

  354. are full of drugs

  355. which are designed to put it off.

  356. We go to the health club

  357. to try to stop the aging process.

  358. We do everything we can to avoid it.

  359. But in so much of life

  360. death lives under the control

  361. or the shadow

  362. of death.

  363. Death is the end.

  364. We know that

  365. when that time comes,

  366. all second chances are over.

  367. we're going to stand and face

  368. our maker.

  369. I honestly think that's the part

  370. that scares us the most.

  371. But it's all going to be done

  372. and we're going to give account

  373. for how we've lived.

  374. And that thought

  375. for some of us

  376. sends chills

  377. through our bones.

  378. Because we know

  379. we deserve it.

  380. But that's the road

  381. we're headed to

  382. and the final verdict.

  383. And boy, aren't you encouraged.

  384. So we avoid talking about it.

  385. We don't want to think about it.

  386. We make jokes about it

  387. to kind of just ease our tension

  388. and the fear.

  389. And so

  390. and that's where we're headed

  391. when this life is over.

  392. Unless

  393. we meet Jesus on the way.

  394. And if we meet Jesus on the way

  395. he could disrupt everything.

  396. Even our journey

  397. to the grave.

  398. You know,

  399. and again,

  400. that's

  401. it goes back to Jesus

  402. even touching,

  403. entering into

  404. this man's death.

  405. Very intentionally.

  406. He touched it because

  407. in that short time

  408. he

  409. would be

  410. the dead son.

  411. You know,

  412. I hate death.

  413. Sort of.

  414. You know,

  415. a couple years ago

  416. I was diagnosed

  417. with cancer.

  418. Fortunately,

  419. in my case,

  420. it was the kind

  421. that was very easily cured.

  422. word.

  423. And,

  424. you know,

  425. you go have surgery

  426. and it's over

  427. and it's done.

  428. It's not always the case.

  429. But there's something

  430. about that C word

  431. that when we hear it,

  432. especially in relationship

  433. to us,

  434. that is like a kick

  435. in the gut.

  436. But I remember

  437. thinking about it.

  438. I was standing

  439. in my bathroom doorway

  440. one day,

  441. it was just right after,

  442. and I thought about it

  443. and all of a sudden

  444. this thought went

  445. through my mind

  446. and it says,

  447. um,

  448. this might be it.

  449. This just might be

  450. my ticket home.

  451. And strangely,

  452. I started feeling

  453. not terrified,

  454. but giddy.

  455. Because I knew

  456. what that meant

  457. was

  458. I could very soon

  459. be in the arms

  460. of my true love.

  461. I mean,

  462. I would hate it

  463. because of the pain

  464. that my family

  465. would experience,

  466. especially my dear bride.

  467. But

  468. there was something

  469. inside that said,

  470. yes!

  471. Finally!

  472. All the struggle here

  473. is going to be over.

  474. I'm going to be home

  475. with

  476. the one

  477. that I loved.

  478. Because

  479. Jesus met me

  480. on the way

  481. to the grave.

  482. When I was dead,

  483. Jesus spoke

  484. and brought life.

  485. Because there is life

  486. on the other side.

  487. A life

  488. so rich

  489. and deep

  490. it is beyond

  491. imagination.

  492. the one

  493. whom I loved

  494. and placed

  495. my hope,

  496. the one

  497. who died

  498. in my place,

  499. who tasted

  500. death for me,

  501. the one

  502. who was raised

  503. to new life

  504. for me,

  505. I would see

  506. with outstretched arms

  507. welcoming me

  508. home.

  509. and that

  510. only comes

  511. about

  512. when we

  513. meet Jesus.

  514. Facing

  515. our hope

  516. in a hope

  517. that supersedes

  518. all fear

  519. and that kind

  520. of hope

  521. can set us

  522. free

  523. from this

  524. fear

  525. of death

  526. that enslaves

  527. us.

  528. Because

  529. the only

  530. begotten

  531. son

  532. took the

  533. place

  534. of that

  535. widow's

  536. son

  537. and became

  538. the son

  539. who died

  540. instead.

  541. And suffered

  542. death

  543. to its

  544. fullest degree.

  545. and now

  546. offers us

  547. life

  548. to its

  549. fullest

  550. degree.

  551. So,

  552. have you

  553. met him?

  554. You know,

  555. in a way,

  556. I really want

  557. to speak

  558. to some

  559. of you

  560. younger ones.

  561. You know,

  562. and this is

  563. not at all

  564. to scare

  565. you,

  566. but it is

  567. to bring

  568. some sobriety

  569. because when

  570. we're young,

  571. we think

  572. we're

  573. indestructible,

  574. we think

  575. we're

  576. invulnerable.

  577. And we

  578. don't think

  579. about this

  580. at all.

  581. But unfortunately,

  582. it's a reality.

  583. I've been

  584. to funerals

  585. of young

  586. ones

  587. who were

  588. taken way

  589. before their

  590. time.

  591. I've been

  592. to funerals

  593. from older

  594. folks

  595. who die

  596. of disease

  597. or

  598. those who

  599. have even

  600. taken their

  601. own lives.

  602. and funerals

  603. are good

  604. because they

  605. remind us

  606. of this

  607. end

  608. and they

  609. call us

  610. to be

  611. sober.

  612. One of the

  613. scriptures

  614. that

  615. we see

  616. in

  617. Psalm

    Psalms 90:12

  618. 90

  619. verse 12,

  620. Moses writes

  621. in this

  622. Psalm,

  623. teach us

  624. to number

  625. our days

  626. so that we

  627. can have

  628. a heart

  629. of wisdom.

  630. wisdom

  631. is knowing

  632. that we're

  633. vulnerable.

  634. Wisdom

  635. is knowing

  636. that we

  637. are not

  638. immortal.

  639. Wisdom

  640. is knowing

  641. that our

  642. days are

  643. numbered

  644. and how

  645. are we

  646. going to

  647. face

  648. that

  649. reality?

  650. Well,

  651. see,

  652. it's a good

  653. thing

  654. if we've

  655. met Jesus

  656. because he

  657. takes that

  658. place.

  659. One more

  660. thing.

  661. We see

  662. dread

  663. becomes

  664. faith.

  665. In the

  666. last couple

  667. of verses,

  668. the people

  669. that respond

  670. to this

  671. miracle,

  672. when Jesus

  673. raises this

  674. young man

  675. from the

  676. dead,

  677. he raised

  678. him up

  679. and the

  680. response

  681. of the

  682. people

  683. is almost

  684. verbatim

  685. what the

  686. people said

  687. or the

  688. woman,

  689. the widow

  690. from Sidon

  691. said when

  692. Elijah raised

  693. her son.

  694. He says

  695. a great

  696. prophet has

  697. come to

  698. his people.

  699. God has

  700. visited his

  701. people.

  702. And so

  703. this is

  704. really the

  705. message.

  706. it brings

  707. us to

  708. that

  709. identity

  710. of

  711. Jesus.

  712. And as

  713. we're facing

  714. life and

  715. we're facing

  716. all that is

  717. about it,

  718. who is

  719. this

  720. Jesus?

  721. And this

  722. is what we

  723. have to

  724. come to

  725. terms with.

  726. The people

  727. thought a

  728. great prophet

  729. had risen.

  730. Well,

  731. Jesus is

  732. more than

  733. a great

  734. prophet.

  735. prophet.

  736. He has

  737. to be

  738. because a

  739. great prophet

  740. is not

  741. going to be

  742. the answer

  743. for our

  744. eternity.

  745. If you

  746. think that

  747. Jesus is

  748. just a

  749. great prophet,

  750. a great

  751. moral person,

  752. a great

  753. teacher,

  754. that's fine.

  755. You'll learn

  756. some things,

  757. but that's

  758. not going

  759. to help

  760. because we

  761. need release

  762. from much

  763. bigger things.

  764. We need

  765. release from

  766. not only the

  767. struggles of

  768. this life,

  769. but what is

  770. to come.

  771. And Jesus

  772. can help

  773. us because

  774. he's not

  775. just a

  776. great prophet,

  777. but God

  778. has visited

  779. his people.

  780. God

  781. himself

  782. has come.

  783. God

  784. himself

  785. has

  786. entered

  787. into

  788. the darkness,

  789. the curse

  790. of this

  791. world

  792. and this

  793. life,

  794. and he

  795. has embraced

  796. it as

  797. his own.

  798. And now

  799. has put it

  800. to death

  801. through

  802. his death.

  803. And he's

  804. bringing light

  805. into the

  806. darkness.

  807. Christ.

  808. Have you

  809. embraced

  810. this

  811. Christ?

  812. Is this

  813. who Jesus

  814. is?

  815. Well,

  816. it is

  817. who he

  818. is.

  819. And he

  820. now invites

  821. you

  822. to come.

  823. To come

  824. to him,

  825. to give you

  826. release from

  827. your fears,

  828. to give you

  829. release from

  830. your struggle

  831. and hopelessness

  832. and impotence

  833. to deal

  834. with the

  835. struggles

  836. of life.

  837. Come.

  838. God

  839. has

  840. visited

  841. his people.

  842. Come

  843. to the

  844. one

  845. who is

  846. crucified.

  847. Come

  848. to the

  849. one who

  850. was raised.

  851. Come

  852. to the

  853. one

  854. who

  855. ascended.

  856. Come

  857. to the

  858. one

  859. who

  860. now

  861. reigns

  862. even

  863. over

  864. death

  865. itself.

  866. come

  867. to the

  868. redeemer

  869. as we

  870. pray

  871. together.

  872. Father,

  873. would you

  874. give us

  875. eyes

  876. to see

  877. the

  878. crucified?

  879. Would you

  880. give us

  881. eyes to

  882. see

  883. that you

  884. have

  885. visited?

  886. And would

  887. you shine

  888. the light

  889. into our

  890. darkness

  891. and drive

  892. it away

  893. that we

  894. might know

  895. the light

  896. of life?

  897. Would you

  898. shine the

  899. light of

  900. your glory

  901. into our

  902. darkness so

  903. that even

  904. in the

  905. struggles of

  906. this life,

  907. we might

  908. rejoice because

  909. we have

  910. real hope?

  911. And if

  912. there are

  913. those here

  914. who do

  915. not know

  916. you,

  917. would you

  918. pull back

  919. the darkness,

  920. push back

  921. the darkness,

  922. shine the

  923. light of

  924. your glory,

  925. and invite

  926. them home

  927. to the

  928. place they

  929. were made

  930. for.

  931. Do this

  932. in Jesus'

  933. name.

  934. Amen.

  935. Amen.
