  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. Those great words are from Psalm 51, David's psalm of confession that we sang earlier,

  4. as God be merciful to me. And the same psalm that we're going to be looking at together

  5. for the next three Sundays. It's going to be a short break from our study through the Gospel of Luke

  6. over these next three weeks to talk together about confession. We'll talk about the nature of sin,

  7. the heart of repentance, and the God of forgiveness as well over the next three weeks.

  8. We're doing this for several reasons. One is that Luke is not the only book in the Bible,

  9. and we don't want you to forget that. That the Old Testament is also God's Word, and sometimes

  10. when you study through a particularly long book of the Bible, it's helpful along the way to

  11. take some breaks and expose your heart to other parts of God's Word. So this will be helpful in

  12. that. Another reason is that this is a time in the church calendar where we often spend some time

  13. considering our sin, our weakness, our need for Jesus' life and death and resurrection for us.

  14. We're preparing to celebrate that at Easter, and so we consider our need for it as we lead up

  15. to that celebration. And to be honest, any time is a good time to consider sin and repentance

  16. and forgiveness because those are to be regular parts of all of our lives as followers of Christ.

  17. One final reason that we're doing this now is that your session, the group of elders that you elected

  18. to lead, to shepherd this flock, has been wrestling for the last year and a half or so

  19. with our hearts before God. He's been showing us more of our own sin, more of his grace and forgiveness

  20. and teaching us what repentance looks like. Most of you know that several years ago, Southwood

  21. experienced a particularly difficult season of church conflict. One of the primary things that made that

  22. such a difficult season for us is that we as church leaders sinned deeply. We as church leaders failed to

  23. love God as we should. We failed to love our neighbor as God commands us to. Your church session failed to

  24. love others and failed to pursue reconciliation in a manner that was biblical and God

  25. dishonoring. As a result of those sins being a group that was called by God to represent him to his people

  26. and to this entire community. Instead, in many ways, we brought dishonor to his name. And as you can imagine,

  27. when godly leadership fails like that, and as we did, there are many people who are impacted by that. Many people

  28. who are hurt by that sin. Some of those dear brothers and sisters that we love are no longer a part of this

  29. congregation. Others of you are sitting right here this morning looking at me and you were hurt by our sin as well.

  30. And so we wanted all of you, whether you were here during that season or not, we wanted all of you to know

  31. that as a group, God has broken and continues to break our hearts over our sin. We've been as a group for some time

  32. in many different ways, confessing our sin to God and clinging to his forgiveness. You've heard previously,

  33. if you've been here several years, you've heard different people confess in different contexts, individuals

  34. confess sin from that season. But this confession is a corporate one from the session of Southwood.

  35. We wanted all of you here during that time or not to know how sorry we are for our sin

  36. and to know that it's a chapter in the story of this church. And if you're a part of it, then a chapter

  37. in your story, it's not our favorite chapter. It's not one that you perhaps hear a lot of discussion

  38. about on a regular basis. And it's not one that defines who we are as a church. But it is a chapter

  39. in our story. And it's one that can show us more of God's glorious grace and faithfulness and teach us

  40. to depend more desperately on Jesus than we naturally do. It's something he's been teaching us.

  41. We want you to have the opportunity to learn that along with us.

  42. It's also our heart in sharing this that anyone who is still confused, hurting, lacking resolution

  43. from this season in the life of the church would hear from us a warm invitation to talk more,

  44. to talk with us personally, that we could be in any way we possibly could a help, a part of the healing

  45. wherever we can. Now I'm sensitive to the fact that that's a weighty thing to throw at you during

  46. a sermon introduction. It's a weighty thing for me to say. It's been a weighty thing for us to

  47. wrestle with. But I want you to know some of our heart. I also want you to understand some of the

  48. context for what we're talking about here in this sermon series right up at the front

  49. as we look to God and His Word to teach us. We want to share with you some of what God's been

  50. teaching us, some of what He's been doing in our hearts. So we'll talk a little bit more about our

  51. confession and what we mean by that a little bit later. But for now let's pray. Let's ask God to teach

  52. us from His Word. Father, it's natural for there to be in our minds questions, confusion, noise in our

  53. heads that might prevent us from hearing well from You that would hinder our hearing of Your Word.

  54. Father, there is sin in all of our hearts that this morning would distract us from hearing and hinder us

  55. from hearing Your Word. And so Father, what we all need is to hear from You. And we ask that You would

  56. speak clearly to us. Speak to our hearts. Holy Spirit, we're in different places. We come from different

  57. weeks. We come from different experiences of our own sin and of Your grace. And we need You to speak to our hearts

  58. through Your Word. We ask that You would do it for Jesus' sake. Amen.

  59. Psalm 51. We'll read the first five verses. This is the Word of God.

  60. Psalm 51.

  61. Psalm 51.

  62. Psalm 51.

  63. Psalm 51.

  64. comes before God. He thinks about His sins. He thinks about His sins, the specific ways in which He has violated God's holy law.

  65. And He uses even several different words for them. You may have noticed in this particular psalm alone. We translate them things like sin, transgressions, iniquities, doing evil.

  66. Here in verse 3.

  67. Here in verse 3. David is what he's talking about the words he's using here. He's confessing these particular thoughts and actions.

  68. And the pictures, the words he's using here. And the pictures, the words he gives are that his sin has built up a great debt for him in the ledger, so to speak, of his account.

  69. Another word references that his sin is dirt that clings to him really tightly and is very difficult to wash off. He's dirty from his sin. And David feels this, doesn't he?

  70. I know my sin. I know my sin. I know my sin. I know my sin. I know my sin is ever before me. This is how I feel before you, God.

  71. He's begun to see his sin for what it really is. But it's important for us to ask, has David just become dirty or indebted because of his mistakes?

  72. Or was he dirty and in debt and so made some mistakes? In other words, is David a sinner because he committed sin?

  73. Or does he commit sin because he is a sinner? He answers these questions clearly in verse 5.

  74. Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity. And in sin did my mother conceive me. Sinful from birth. Sinful even from conception.

  75. Not only is David a person at conception, he's a sinner. From the moment he was conceived, David says, this is my nature.

  76. I was born self-focused with a heart, mind, and will broken and bent against God.

  77. We call that original sin. That's the theological term. Original sin that all of us descended from Adam, David included, you included, me included.

  78. All of us have a sinful nature. We're not born perfect the way God originally created.

  79. So the question of, am I a sinner because I commit sin? Or do I commit sin because I am a sinner?

  80. Is not just some silly chicken or egg kind of question that really makes no difference.

  81. It matters deeply.

  82. It matters not because David is trying to excuse his sin, to blame it on that old sinful nature,

  83. so it's not really his fault.

  84. That's just the way that I am.

  85. No, that's not the point.

  86. Rather, it matters because we often try to excuse our sin,

  87. our sinful words or actions,

  88. by saying, well, that's really not the way I am.

  89. That's not really me.

  90. I know that sounded very prideful, but I'm not really like that.

  91. I know it looked like I have an anger problem,

  92. but really I'm quite a good person.

  93. That was an aberration.

  94. That's not like me.

  95. I'm a very good person when you get to know me.

  96. Except that we're not.

  97. We're not naturally good people.

  98. But we often function that way, don't we?

  99. To my shame, I have spent a lot of time trying to convince my wife

  100. that I'm a really good husband who just did something totally inexplicable.

  101. When the reality is I'm a broken husband

  102. who just did something inexcusable,

  103. but not entirely unexpected.

  104. I need to deal with my heart,

  105. not merely just clean up my out-of-character actions

  106. that happen occasionally.

  107. In his first inauguration address,

  108. former President Bill Clinton said,

  109. there is nothing wrong with America

  110. that cannot be cured by what is right with America.

  111. That's a nice sentiment.

  112. A nice, hopeful, positive thing to say about your country.

  113. And my point is not at all a social or political one this morning.

  114. But rather, I know I tend to feel that way about myself personally.

  115. That really, if you just get to know me,

  116. there's nothing wrong with Will

  117. that can't be cured by what's right with Will.

  118. Just hang around long enough,

  119. you'll see what a great guy I am.

  120. I'll fix it.

  121. I'll balance the scales.

  122. I'll make up for it.

  123. It was just a little mistake after all,

  124. and I'm good enough to clean it up.

  125. I'm quite sure.

  126. I'll do it differently next time.

  127. That's no problem.

  128. I'm capable of that.

  129. God's Word is reminding us this morning

  130. that that is not the case at all.

  131. We need outside help.

  132. We are so deeply sinful at our core.

  133. When we sin,

  134. that's not so shocking

  135. as it is us being exactly

  136. who we are broken by nature.

  137. David sees the depth of his sin.

  138. That his sins are not merely outward violations of God's law,

  139. although they are that.

  140. But that the sinful actions flow from a sinful man

  141. with a sinful heart.

  142. Do you see why that difference matters

  143. when we begin to face the depth of our sin,

  144. when we're actually dealing with the things that we've done?

  145. It pushes us to see what truly needs to be repented of,

  146. what needs to be forgiven.

  147. It's not merely a surface issue,

  148. something that is easy to see.

  149. In fact, the iceberg underneath

  150. is probably a much bigger issue.

  151. For instance, in regard to this particular confession

  152. we're communicating to you about today,

  153. it means you don't have a pastor who messed up.

  154. You have a messed up pastor.

  155. And I say that not to be cute or funny,

  156. but rather because it's true.

  157. And because we've got to remember that reality

  158. of who we are, who I am.

  159. We as a church must remember that's true.

  160. If that's true, I need to repent,

  161. not merely of missteps and mistakes I've made,

  162. but of my heart attitudes beyond my actions.

  163. If that's true,

  164. then your session is capable of sinning deeply again.

  165. And you need to be praying

  166. that God would protect us from that.

  167. Because we're not just really great guys

  168. 99% of the time who messed up once a few years ago.

  169. But rather broken people.

  170. If that's true, then we are married to sinners.

  171. We work with sinners.

  172. We parent sinners.

  173. We worship with other sinners.

  174. And so we need to expect

  175. that we need God a lot.

  176. We must trust Him more than we trust our pastor.

  177. More than we trust anyone in any of our relationships.

  178. We have to trust Him as wholly reliable.

  179. Our sinful nature is not just active from birth.

  180. It also loves to keep fighting against us, doesn't it?

  181. Even after Jesus rescues us,

  182. it loves to fight back.

  183. So that's the first thing about the nature of sin here.

  184. Sinful actions flow from sinful hearts.

  185. But the other thing that's so important for us to see here

  186. is that our sinful nature that we have

  187. stands in stark contrast to God's holy nature.

  188. And this is the real issue with our sin.

  189. This is the problem.

  190. Look at verse 4.

  191. David says,

  192. Now, stop and think for a second.

  193. Can you make a pretty good list of the people

  194. impacted by David's sin?

  195. Remember the context of this psalm, right?

  196. Who all has been hurt by David's sin?

  197. I mean, you can start with Bathsheba herself

  198. who's been violated deeply.

  199. You can add Uriah who's now dead

  200. as a result of David's sin.

  201. Think about David's family

  202. that is thrown into tumult

  203. and suffers the effects of this for years

  204. and for generations.

  205. The entire nation of Israel

  206. who's looking to their king

  207. to be godly leadership

  208. that points them to follow after God.

  209. And what are they finding from their king?

  210. And yet, with all of that being true,

  211. David says to God,

  212. Against you, you only, have I sinned.

  213. What is he thinking?

  214. Could he really be right?

  215. What he's teaching us is the nature of sin

  216. is that all sin

  217. is first and foremost against God.

  218. And it's against God

  219. in a completely different way

  220. than it is against anyone else.

  221. You see how David looks to God's holy character?

  222. That you may be justified in your words

  223. and blameless in your judgment.

  224. God's utter righteousness,

  225. his perfect justice are highlighted.

  226. David says he's holy, holy, holy.

  227. And we're not.

  228. And this is the glorious God

  229. against whom our seemingly smallest sin

  230. because of his holiness

  231. is an odious, treasonous offense.

  232. One of my favorite prayers

  233. from the Valley of Vision

  234. includes this section.

  235. Let me never forget

  236. that the heinousness of sin,

  237. how awful it is,

  238. how terrible my sin is,

  239. lies not so much

  240. in the nature of the sin committed

  241. as in the greatness

  242. of the person sinned against.

  243. How bad my sin is,

  244. the level to which

  245. its offense rises

  246. is measured by God's greatness,

  247. his holiness and perfection.

  248. It makes our little white lies

  249. and momentary lusts

  250. and careless words

  251. loom a lot bigger

  252. all of a sudden, doesn't it?

  253. You see, we forget this so easily.

  254. We so easily engage with our sin

  255. merely in terms of others harmed

  256. or in how others are going to think of us.

  257. How badly is it going to reflect on me

  258. when someone knows about this?

  259. If they find out,

  260. what will they think?

  261. And we miss the real issue

  262. that's going on

  263. and even the smallest sin

  264. that our heart is rebelling

  265. against the King,

  266. the one who created us,

  267. the one who loves us,

  268. the one who designed us

  269. and we're rejecting

  270. his good design.

  271. This is probably the aspect

  272. of our sin

  273. that God has most deeply impressed

  274. upon the hearts of the session

  275. in the last several months.

  276. If you're a people pleaser at all

  277. like me,

  278. then when you have sinned

  279. and other people have been deeply hurt,

  280. when people you love deeply

  281. have been impacted by your sin,

  282. it's very difficult to consider

  283. the weight of your sin

  284. without seeing faces

  285. and stories

  286. when you think of how awful

  287. your sin is.

  288. You immediately think of

  289. his angst

  290. and her tears

  291. and their relationship.

  292. And your sin feels heavy.

  293. And we as a session

  294. focused a lot there

  295. because as I said,

  296. many people we love

  297. were hurt

  298. by our sin.

  299. But it was

  300. only when we

  301. realized this,

  302. the nature of our sin

  303. against God

  304. that the true weight

  305. of it really began

  306. to settle in

  307. when we considered

  308. first and foremost

  309. on a unique level

  310. our sin

  311. was against

  312. the name of Christ

  313. and the glory

  314. of God.

  315. He was the great

  316. one

  317. against whom

  318. we had sinned.

  319. So, Will,

  320. are you saying

  321. you just stopped

  322. caring about

  323. those people

  324. and how they felt

  325. when you realized that?

  326. Is that what

  327. David is saying?

  328. Is that what

  329. this means?

  330. No.

  331. Actually,

  332. understanding

  333. this part of the nature

  334. of sin

  335. increases

  336. the gravity

  337. of my sin

  338. against another person.

  339. Not diminishes it.

  340. Let me see

  341. if I can explain

  342. what I mean.

  343. when I sin

  344. thought

  345. word

  346. deed

  347. whatever it is

  348. it is the law

  349. of God

  350. that I am

  351. first and foremost

  352. violating.

  353. The way

  354. He has created

  355. me to live

  356. reflecting

  357. His image

  358. in true

  359. holiness.

  360. And then

  361. when others

  362. are involved

  363. when they're

  364. impacted

  365. my sin

  366. against someone

  367. else

  368. is always

  369. grievous

  370. first and foremost

  371. because of how

  372. I'm mistreating

  373. the image

  374. of God

  375. in them.

  376. So when you

  377. run someone

  378. down behind

  379. her back

  380. the size

  381. of your sin

  382. the weight

  383. of your sin

  384. the seriousness

  385. of your sin

  386. is measured

  387. not so much

  388. by whether

  389. she finds out

  390. or by how

  391. hurt she is

  392. and how much

  393. damage you've

  394. done

  395. to her

  396. reputation

  397. rather the

  398. severity of it

  399. is measured

  400. by the image

  401. of God

  402. in her

  403. that you

  404. defamed

  405. when you

  406. violated

  407. God's law.

  408. when an elder

  409. neglects

  410. or misleads

  411. one of

  412. Christ's

  413. sheep

  414. a precious

  415. lamb

  416. created

  417. in His

  418. image

  419. and purchased

  420. with the

  421. blood of

  422. His Son

  423. it is

  424. that reality

  425. that makes

  426. the sin

  427. so awful

  428. that

  429. drives us

  430. to desperate

  431. confession

  432. temptation

  433. oh we care

  434. about the

  435. one who's

  436. been hurt

  437. because of

  438. God's

  439. care for

  440. them

  441. you see

  442. you're still

  443. heartbroken

  444. over the

  445. harm you

  446. did to

  447. another

  448. but it's

  449. not just

  450. sad that

  451. they caught

  452. you

  453. or sorry

  454. that they

  455. feel frustrated

  456. with you

  457. but rather

  458. grieved

  459. that you did

  460. violence

  461. to the image

  462. of God

  463. in them

  464. or that you

  465. denigrated

  466. someone

  467. that God

  468. values

  469. and treasures

  470. that's

  471. where our

  472. sin gets

  473. weighty

  474. John Calvin

  475. said what

  476. David meant

  477. in verse 4

  478. against you

  479. and you

  480. only

  481. have I

  482. sinned

  483. is that

  484. God

  485. Himself

  486. was the

  487. holy

  488. and righteous

  489. judge

  490. David was

  491. facing

  492. Calvin

  493. wrote

  494. the voice

  495. of man

  496. could administer

  497. no relief

  498. to him

  499. however much

  500. that man

  501. might be

  502. disposed

  503. to forgive

  504. or to

  505. excuse

  506. or to

  507. flatter

  508. he stood

  509. guilty

  510. before the

  511. one

  512. ultimately

  513. in charge

  514. the one

  515. who created

  516. and owned

  517. him

  518. regardless

  519. of what

  520. men knew

  521. about

  522. or felt

  523. about it

  524. against

  525. you

  526. you

  527. only

  528. have

  529. I

  530. sinned

  531. I don't

  532. know if

  533. you can

  534. see or

  535. feel it

  536. this morning

  537. but maybe

  538. as you

  539. reflect

  540. you'll

  541. begin

  542. to see

  543. how that

  544. reality

  545. can turn

  546. your stomach

  547. at sins

  548. that you

  549. otherwise

  550. might have

  551. only given

  552. a passing

  553. thought

  554. because

  555. because you

  556. haven't

  557. seen

  558. much

  559. damage

  560. but all

  561. of a

  562. sudden

  563. you

  564. see a

  565. holy

  566. God

  567. against

  568. whom

  569. you

  570. have

  571. sinned

  572. David

  573. knew

  574. well

  575. that he

  576. could not

  577. walk

  578. into the

  579. presence

  580. of this

  581. holy

  582. God

  583. without

  584. a

  585. sacrifice

  586. for his

  587. sins

  588. even

  589. on a

  590. good

  591. day

  592. for

  593. King

  594. David

  595. that the

  596. sacrificial

  597. system

  598. in the

  599. nation

  600. of

  601. Israel

  602. reminded

  603. him

  604. that

  605. by

  606. nature

  607. he

  608. could

  609. not

  610. get

  611. near

  612. the

  613. place

  614. where

  615. God

  616. lived

  617. in the

  618. holiest

  619. part

  620. of the

  621. temple

  622. where

  623. God

  624. had

  625. taken

  626. up

  627. residence

  628. among

  629. his

  630. people

  631. David

  632. couldn't

  633. get

  634. near

  635. there

  636. even

  637. on a

  638. good

  639. day

  640. he

  641. certainly

  642. could

  643. not

  644. approach

  645. without

  646. a

  647. sacrifice

  648. right

  649. much

  650. less

  651. after

  652. adultery

  653. and

  654. murder

  655. and

  656. that's

  657. the

  658. reality

  659. that brings

  660. him

  661. to his

  662. knees

  663. so to

  664. speak

  665. in

  666. this

  667. prayer

  668. of

  669. confession

  670. have

  671. mercy

  672. on

  673. me

  674. oh

  675. God

  676. my

  677. sinfulness

  678. and

  679. my

  680. sins

  681. are

  682. utterly

  683. repugnant

  684. to

  685. your

  686. holiness

  687. you

  688. are

  689. righteous

  690. you

  691. are

  692. just

  693. nothing

  694. you

  695. could

  696. do

  697. to

  698. me

  699. would

  700. be

  701. an

  702. overreaction

  703. in

  704. response

  705. to

  706. my

  707. sin

  708. that's

  709. what

  710. David's

  711. saying

  712. in

  713. these

  714. words

  715. God

  716. you

  717. couldn't

  718. possibly

  719. be

  720. unfair

  721. no

  722. matter

  723. what

  724. you

  725. did

  726. to

  727. me

  728. and

  729. this

  730. is

  731. David's

  732. problem

  733. right

  734. God

  735. is

  736. the

  737. only

  738. one

  739. who

  740. can

  741. truly

  742. forgive

  743. him

  744. for

  745. who

  746. he

  747. is

  748. and

  749. what

  750. he's

  751. done

  752. the

  753. one

  754. owed

  755. the

  756. debt

  757. is

  758. the

  759. only

  760. one

  761. who

  762. can

  763. forgive

  764. it

  765. right

  766. we

  767. know

  768. this

  769. if

  770. I

  771. owe

  772. Peter

  773. a

  774. hundred

  775. dollars

  776. you

  777. can't

  778. come

  779. walking

  780. up

  781. to

  782. me

  783. right

  784. now

  785. and

  786. say

  787. don't

  788. worry

  789. about

  790. anymore

  791. let

  792. me

  793. forgive

  794. that

  795. debt

  796. for

  797. you

  798. if

  799. I

  800. punch

  801. James

  802. in the

  803. face

  804. you

  805. can't

  806. come

  807. running

  808. up

  809. here

  810. and

  811. say

  812. well I

  813. forgive

  814. you

  815. for

  816. that

  817. don't

  818. worry

  819. about

  820. it

  821. no

  822. he

  823. must

  824. forgive

  825. the

  826. one

  827. who's

  828. owed

  829. the

  830. debt

  831. must

  832. be

  833. the

  834. one

  835. who

  836. forgives

  837. it

  838. and

  839. when

  840. I

  841. transgress

  842. God's

  843. law

  844. when

  845. I

  846. mar

  847. his

  848. image

  849. when

  850. I

  851. mistreat

  852. someone

  853. or

  854. something

  855. that

  856. he

  857. made

  858. he

  859. is

  860. the

  861. only

  862. one

  863. who

  864. can

  865. forgive

  866. me

  867. and

  868. so

  869. I'm

  870. stuck

  871. David's

  872. stuck

  873. why

  874. what do

  875. we both

  876. know

  877. about

  878. God

  879. God's

  880. just

  881. David

  882. says

  883. it

  884. God

  885. must

  886. punish

  887. sin

  888. even

  889. if

  890. it

  891. carries

  892. to

  893. the

  894. third

  895. or

  896. fourth

  897. generation

  898. in

  899. order

  900. to

  901. see

  902. the

  903. debt

  904. repaid

  905. right

  906. God's

  907. told

  908. him

  909. that

  910. about

  911. himself

  912. when

  913. he

  914. introduced

  915. himself

  916. to

  917. his

  918. people

  919. so

  920. David

  921. has

  922. a

  923. problem

  924. and

  925. you

  926. and

  927. I

  928. have

  929. a

  930. problem

  931. and

  932. God

  933. has

  934. a

  935. solution

  936. we'll

  937. talk

  938. about

  939. it

  940. more

  941. the

  942. next

  943. couple

  944. of

  945. weeks

  946. but

  947. here's

  948. the

  949. heart

  950. of

  951. it

  952. Romans

    Romans 3 chapter mention

  953. chapter

  954. 3

  955. God

  956. presented

  957. Christ

  958. as a

  959. sacrifice

  960. of

  961. atonement

  962. through

  963. the

  964. shedding

  965. of

  966. his

  967. blood

  968. to

  969. be

  970. received

  971. by

  972. faith

  973. he

  974. did

  975. this

  976. why

  977. was it

  978. that

  979. God

  980. had

  981. to

  982. send

  983. his

  984. son

  985. he

  986. did

  987. this

  988. to

  989. demonstrate

  990. his

  991. righteousness

  992. that

  993. he's

  994. righteous

  995. and

  996. just

  997. because

  998. in

  999. his

  1000. forbearance

  1001. he left

  1002. sins

  1003. committed

  1004. beforehand

  1005. unpunished

  1006. and God

  1007. can't do

  1008. that

  1009. forever

  1010. he did

  1011. it to

  1012. demonstrate

  1013. his

  1014. righteousness

  1015. at the

  1016. present

  1017. time

  1018. so as

  1019. to be

  1020. just

  1021. and

  1022. the

  1023. one

  1024. who

  1025. justifies

  1026. those

  1027. who have

  1028. faith

  1029. in

  1030. Jesus

  1031. my

  1032. sins

  1033. rightly

  1034. deserve

  1035. death

  1036. my

  1037. blood

  1038. deserved

  1039. to be

  1040. shed

  1041. the

  1042. just

  1043. God

  1044. had

  1045. to

  1046. meet

  1047. out

  1048. the

  1049. death

  1050. penalty

  1051. that

  1052. my

  1053. sins

  1054. had

  1055. deserved

  1056. but

  1057. Jesus

  1058. shed

  1059. his

  1060. blood

  1061. in

  1062. my

  1063. place

  1064. so that

  1065. God

  1066. could

  1067. remain

  1068. just

  1069. and

  1070. punish

  1071. sin

  1072. and

  1073. at the

  1074. same

  1075. time

  1076. and this

  1077. is

  1078. amazing

  1079. the

  1080. just

  1081. and

  1082. holy

  1083. God

  1084. could

  1085. stay

  1086. just

  1087. and

  1088. I

  1089. could

  1090. stand

  1091. before

  1092. him

  1093. justified

  1094. embraced

  1095. by

  1096. him

  1097. how

  1098. because

  1099. my

  1100. sin

  1101. had been

  1102. given

  1103. to

  1104. another

  1105. a

  1106. sinner

  1107. by

  1108. nature

  1109. and

  1110. by

  1111. action

  1112. finds

  1113. himself

  1114. covered

  1115. by the

  1116. blood

  1117. of

  1118. another

  1119. by the

  1120. sacrifice

  1121. of the

  1122. son

  1123. of

  1124. God

  1125. covered

  1126. in his

  1127. shed

  1128. blood

  1129. and his

  1130. perfect

  1131. righteousness

  1132. God

  1133. is both

  1134. just

  1135. and

  1136. the

  1137. one

  1138. who

  1139. justifies

  1140. those

  1141. who

  1142. hide

  1143. themselves

  1144. in

  1145. Jesus

  1146. who

  1147. have

  1148. faith

  1149. in

  1150. Jesus

  1151. so

  1152. in

  1153. his

  1154. day

  1155. David

  1156. would

  1157. place

  1158. his

  1159. hands

  1160. on

  1161. a

  1162. lamb

  1163. confess

  1164. his

  1165. sins

  1166. watch

  1167. it

  1168. die

  1169. in

  1170. his

  1171. place

  1172. as

  1173. a

  1174. picture

  1175. of

  1176. the

  1177. lamb

  1178. of

  1179. God

  1180. who

  1181. would

  1182. come

  1183. to be

  1184. the

  1185. full

  1186. and

  1187. final

  1188. sacrifice

  1189. for

  1190. sins

  1191. and

  1192. just

  1193. as

  1194. David

  1195. placed

  1196. his

  1197. hands

  1198. on

  1199. that

  1200. lamb

  1201. we

  1202. now

  1203. lay

  1204. hold

  1205. of

  1206. Jesus

  1207. sacrificed

  1208. on the

  1209. cross

  1210. for us

  1211. and we

  1212. find

  1213. as we

  1214. do

  1215. that

  1216. the

  1217. only

  1218. one

  1219. who

  1220. can

  1221. truly

  1222. and

  1223. fully

  1224. forgive

  1225. us

  1226. has

  1227. already

  1228. done

  1229. so

  1230. he's

  1231. forgiven

  1232. messed

  1233. up

  1234. pastors

  1235. sinful

  1236. sessions

  1237. and

  1238. struggling

  1239. sinners

  1240. because

  1241. that's

  1242. who

  1243. he

  1244. is

  1245. and

  1246. that's

  1247. how

  1248. great

  1249. his

  1250. love

  1251. is

  1252. let's

  1253. pray

  1254. father

  1255. that there

  1256. is any

  1257. hope

  1258. for us

  1259. is a

  1260. miracle

  1261. of your

  1262. grace

  1263. and

  1264. kindness

  1265. to us

  1266. and we

  1267. thank you

  1268. for it

  1269. we are

  1270. grateful

  1271. that that

  1272. hope allows

  1273. us to

  1274. look at

  1275. our sin

  1276. honestly

  1277. so even

  1278. as we

  1279. confess

  1280. our sin

  1281. this morning

  1282. even as

  1283. we grieve

  1284. over it

  1285. we look

  1286. to you

  1287. and we

  1288. depend upon

  1289. you

  1290. and we

  1291. even rejoice

  1292. through tears

  1293. that you

  1294. love us

  1295. because of

  1296. Jesus

  1297. we thank you

  1298. for that

  1299. in his name

  1300. amen

  1301. as some of our

  1302. elders come

  1303. forward

  1304. and two of our

  1305. ruling elders

  1306. Skeet Simonis

  1307. and Alan Judge

  1308. are going to

  1309. speak to you

  1310. just briefly

  1311. this morning

  1312. good morning

  1313. I am

  1314. Skeet Simonis

  1315. and I do

  1316. serve as one

  1317. of your elders

  1318. here at

  1319. Southwood

  1320. and I've

  1321. been asked

  1322. on behalf

  1323. of the

  1324. session

  1325. to come

  1326. and speak

  1327. to you

  1328. for a few

  1329. minutes

  1330. I'd like

  1331. to begin

  1332. my remarks

  1333. by reading

  1334. a statement

  1335. from your

  1336. Southwood

  1337. session

  1338. a few

  1339. years ago

  1340. our church

  1341. endured a

  1342. season of

  1343. conflict

  1344. that impacted

  1345. many people

  1346. both in our

  1347. own congregation

  1348. and in the

  1349. broader Huntsville

  1350. community

  1351. during this

  1352. season in

  1353. particular

  1354. we corporately

  1355. as church

  1356. leaders

  1357. failed to

  1358. love

  1359. as God

  1360. has called

  1361. us to

  1362. and sinned

  1363. against the

  1364. name of

  1365. God

  1366. the church

  1367. in general

  1368. and many

  1369. brothers and

  1370. sisters

  1371. we care for

  1372. deeply

  1373. rather than

  1374. focusing on

  1375. the glory

  1376. of God

  1377. and our

  1378. own sin

  1379. we focused

  1380. on our

  1381. own agendas

  1382. and others

  1383. sin

  1384. in our

  1385. zeal for

  1386. being right

  1387. and defending

  1388. ourselves

  1389. in our

  1390. positions

  1391. we neglected

  1392. to love

  1393. well

  1394. spoke

  1395. harshly

  1396. to some

  1397. overlooked

  1398. the concern

  1399. of others

  1400. and so

  1401. wounded

  1402. many

  1403. we are

  1404. sorrowful

  1405. over our

  1406. sins

  1407. and in

  1408. particular

  1409. we grieve

  1410. the dishonor

  1411. they cause

  1412. to the

  1413. name

  1414. of

  1415. Christ

  1416. and then

  1417. the pain

  1418. they cause

  1419. to others

  1420. we desire

  1421. to humbly

  1422. repent

  1423. to

  1424. and be a

  1425. part of

  1426. healing

  1427. for anyone

  1428. still struggling

  1429. with the

  1430. consequences

  1431. of our

  1432. sin

  1433. we acknowledge

  1434. that we do

  1435. not know

  1436. all the ways

  1437. that our

  1438. sin hurt

  1439. and continues

  1440. to hurt

  1441. some

  1442. but the

  1443. heart of

  1444. our session

  1445. is to

  1446. listen to

  1447. to learn

  1448. from

  1449. and to

  1450. aid

  1451. in the

  1452. healing

  1453. process

  1454. for everyone

  1455. we can

  1456. we are

  1457. grateful

  1458. for God's

  1459. continued

  1460. mercy

  1461. upon us

  1462. and upon

  1463. Southwood

  1464. as well

  1465. as for

  1466. his faithfulness

  1467. to work

  1468. through

  1469. and in

  1470. spite of

  1471. us

  1472. to see

  1473. his

  1474. kingdom

  1475. advance

  1476. you may

  1477. be asking

  1478. yourself

  1479. so why

  1480. is the

  1481. session

  1482. doing

  1483. this

  1484. our

  1485. answer

  1486. is that

  1487. God

  1488. has moved

  1489. in the

  1490. hearts

  1491. of the

  1492. elders

  1493. who

  1494. currently

  1495. serve

  1496. on the

  1497. session

  1498. and

  1499. convicted

  1500. us

  1501. of the

  1502. need

  1503. to

  1504. repent

  1505. even

  1506. though

  1507. it's

  1508. been

  1509. about

  1510. five

  1511. years

  1512. since

  1513. so many

  1514. left

  1515. our

  1516. church

  1517. as a

  1518. result

  1519. of

  1520. conflict

  1521. we know

  1522. that there

  1523. are some

  1524. here at

  1525. Southwood

  1526. and some

  1527. in other

  1528. places

  1529. who are still

  1530. struggling

  1531. with the

  1532. consequences

  1533. of our

  1534. sin

  1535. as a

  1536. result

  1537. as Will

  1538. mentioned

  1539. earlier

  1540. we began

  1541. to discuss

  1542. this about

  1543. a year

  1544. and a half

  1545. ago

  1546. since that

  1547. time

  1548. God

  1549. has used

  1550. our

  1551. discussions

  1552. his word

  1553. prayer

  1554. fasting

  1555. and his

  1556. Holy Spirit

  1557. to bring

  1558. us to

  1559. this

  1560. conclusion

  1561. but before

  1562. we communicated

  1563. anything

  1564. publicly

  1565. we wanted

  1566. God to

  1567. deal with

  1568. our own

  1569. hearts

  1570. as

  1571. individuals

  1572. on the

  1573. session

  1574. although that

  1575. certainly is an

  1576. ongoing process

  1577. we feel like

  1578. we have reached

  1579. the point

  1580. to publicly

  1581. confess our

  1582. sin

  1583. and humbly

  1584. we ask

  1585. the forgiveness

  1586. of those

  1587. who we've

  1588. sinned

  1589. against

  1590. you also

  1591. may be asking

  1592. yourself

  1593. why communicate

  1594. about this

  1595. publicly

  1596. it is typically

  1597. appropriate

  1598. that the

  1599. repentance

  1600. over sin

  1601. be as public

  1602. as the sin

  1603. committed

  1604. our corporate

  1605. sin

  1606. impacted

  1607. not only

  1608. the congregation

  1609. of Southwood

  1610. but also

  1611. the broader

  1612. Huntsville

  1613. community

  1614. we want

  1615. others to

  1616. know

  1617. of the

  1618. repentance

  1619. that God

  1620. has worked

  1621. in our own

  1622. hearts

  1623. and for

  1624. him to

  1625. be praised

  1626. because of

  1627. that work

  1628. we also

  1629. want those

  1630. who are

  1631. impacted

  1632. by our

  1633. sin

  1634. to know

  1635. that we

  1636. desire

  1637. healing

  1638. and

  1639. reconciliation

  1640. so as I

  1641. read in the

  1642. statement

  1643. from the

  1644. session

  1645. we as

  1646. your church

  1647. leaders

  1648. fail to

  1649. love

  1650. as God

  1651. has called

  1652. us to

  1653. love

  1654. thus we

  1655. sinned

  1656. against

  1657. God

  1658. himself

  1659. the church

  1660. in general

  1661. and our

  1662. brothers and

  1663. sisters

  1664. who are

  1665. in our

  1666. church

  1667. please

  1668. understand

  1669. that we

  1670. are

  1671. repenting

  1672. over our

  1673. attitudes

  1674. and our

  1675. actions

  1676. we are

  1677. not trying

  1678. to make

  1679. any kind

  1680. of statement

  1681. for or

  1682. against

  1683. either side

  1684. on any

  1685. issue

  1686. in the

  1687. conflict

  1688. that our

  1689. church

  1690. experienced

  1691. we are

  1692. seeking to

  1693. follow God's

  1694. leading

  1695. as we

  1696. trust him

  1697. to continue

  1698. to bring

  1699. healing

  1700. in our

  1701. own

  1702. hearts

  1703. and in

  1704. the hearts

  1705. of those

  1706. who we

  1707. love

  1708. and care

  1709. for

  1710. so we

  1711. wanted to

  1712. share our

  1713. heart as a

  1714. session with

  1715. you the

  1716. members of

  1717. our congregation

  1718. first

  1719. since our

  1720. church split

  1721. is part of

  1722. the story

  1723. of God's

  1724. work here

  1725. at Southwood

  1726. this week

  1727. we will begin

  1728. meeting with

  1729. some of those

  1730. who were here

  1731. during the

  1732. conflict and

  1733. who are no

  1734. longer part of

  1735. our congregation

  1736. we want you to

  1737. know that we

  1738. are eager to

  1739. speak with

  1740. anyone about

  1741. the nature of

  1742. our sin

  1743. the pain it

  1744. caused to

  1745. others

  1746. and our

  1747. desire for

  1748. reconciliation

  1749. so please

  1750. contact us

  1751. with your

  1752. questions and

  1753. feedback

  1754. feel free

  1755. to call

  1756. any one

  1757. of your

  1758. elders

  1759. or send

  1760. us an

  1761. email

  1762. our

  1763. email

  1764. addresses

  1765. are

  1766. listed on

  1767. the

  1768. Southwood

  1769. tower

  1770. and several

  1771. of your

  1772. elders are

  1773. seated down

  1774. here in

  1775. the front

  1776. rows

  1777. and we

  1778. would be

  1779. glad to

  1780. talk with

  1781. you about

  1782. this

  1783. after

  1784. today's

  1785. service

  1786. now my

  1787. brother

  1788. Alan Judge

  1789. will pray

  1790. for us

  1791. before I

  1792. pray I'm

  1793. going to

  1794. pray I

  1795. want you

  1796. to pray

  1797. with me

  1798. but I

  1799. want to

  1800. address a

  1801. couple of

  1802. things

  1803. one there

  1804. are many

  1805. sitting here

  1806. who have

  1807. no idea

  1808. really what

  1809. we're even

  1810. talking about

  1811. or

  1812. you know

  1813. this is

  1814. you came

  1815. since that

  1816. time

  1817. and only

  1818. have vague

  1819. references

  1820. of it

  1821. and

  1822. there are

  1823. others

  1824. who are

  1825. sitting here

  1826. saying I

  1827. didn't do

  1828. anything wrong

  1829. why would I

  1830. confess or why

  1831. would I be a

  1832. part of this

  1833. as I pray I

  1834. want to

  1835. encourage you

  1836. if you're

  1837. sitting here

  1838. this morning

  1839. and you

  1840. know that

  1841. you have

  1842. been wronged

  1843. and you

  1844. know

  1845. that you

  1846. feel in

  1847. your heart

  1848. that you

  1849. didn't do

  1850. anything

  1851. to justify

  1852. that wrong

  1853. but because

  1854. of that

  1855. you have

  1856. allowed

  1857. yourself

  1858. you have

  1859. justified

  1860. in your

  1861. own mind

  1862. of treating

  1863. someone

  1864. not like

  1865. you should

  1866. treat them

  1867. of not

  1868. loving

  1869. them

  1870. I'm

  1871. treating

  1872. them

  1873. the way

  1874. you think

  1875. the wrong

  1876. deserves

  1877. to be

  1878. treated

  1879. then this

  1880. confession

  1881. is for

  1882. you too

  1883. so as

  1884. I pray

  1885. pray with

  1886. me

  1887. oh most

  1888. merciful

  1889. loving

  1890. God

  1891. our

  1892. Lord

  1893. Savior

  1894. and Father

  1895. we have

  1896. sinned

  1897. against

  1898. you

  1899. and done

  1900. what is

  1901. evil

  1902. in your

  1903. sight

  1904. we

  1905. who

  1906. were

  1907. dead

  1908. in our

  1909. sin

  1910. who

  1911. formerly

  1912. lived

  1913. in the

  1914. lusts

  1915. of our

  1916. flesh

  1917. indulging

  1918. the

  1919. desires

  1920. of the

  1921. flesh

  1922. and of

  1923. the

  1924. mind

  1925. who

  1926. were

  1927. by

  1928. nature

  1929. children

  1930. of

  1931. wrath

  1932. but

  1933. you

  1934. oh

  1935. merciful

  1936. God

  1937. because

  1938. of

  1939. your

  1940. great

  1941. love

  1942. with

  1943. which

  1944. you

  1945. loved

  1946. us

  1947. even

  1948. when

  1949. we

  1950. were

  1951. dead

  1952. in

  1953. our

  1954. transgressions

  1955. made

  1956. us

  1957. alive

  1958. together

  1959. with

  1960. Christ

  1961. and

  1962. raised

  1963. us

  1964. up

  1965. with

  1966. him

  1967. seated

  1968. us

  1969. with

  1970. him

  1971. in

  1972. the

  1973. heavenly

  1974. places

  1975. in

  1976. Christ

  1977. Jesus

  1978. all

  1979. of

  1980. this

  1981. being

  1982. a

  1983. gift

  1984. of

  1985. God

  1986. for

  1987. by

  1988. grace

  1989. we

  1990. have

  1991. been

  1992. saved

  1993. so

  1994. that

  1995. we

  1996. have

  1997. no

  1998. reason

  1999. to

  2000. boast

  2001. in

  2002. anything

  2003. that

  2004. we

  2005. have

  2006. done

  2007. indeed

  2008. our

  2009. only

  2010. boast

  2011. is

  2012. in

  2013. the

  2014. life

  2015. death

  2016. and

  2017. resurrection

  2018. of

  2019. Christ

  2020. Jesus

  2021. the

  2022. author

  2023. and

  2024. finisher

  2025. of

  2026. our

  2027. faith

  2028. having

  2029. been

  2030. thus

  2031. called

  2032. and

  2033. saved

  2034. by

  2035. the

  2036. grace

  2037. because

  2038. of

  2039. the

  2040. great

  2041. love

  2042. of

  2043. God

  2044. toward

  2045. us

  2046. sinners

  2047. we

  2048. have

  2049. been

  2050. called

  2051. to set

  2052. our

  2053. mind

  2054. on

  2055. things

  2056. above

  2057. and

  2058. not

  2059. on

  2060. earthly

  2061. things

  2062. to

  2063. die

  2064. to

  2065. ourselves

  2066. to

  2067. be

  2068. alive

  2069. to

  2070. Christ

  2071. and

  2072. thus

  2073. live

  2074. in

  2075. the

  2076. same

  2077. grace

  2078. and

  2079. love

  2080. toward

  2081. one

  2082. another

  2083. that

  2084. we

  2085. have

  2086. been

  2087. shown

  2088. we

  2089. have

  2090. been

  2091. called

  2092. to

  2093. put

  2094. aside

  2095. anger

  2096. wrath

  2097. malice

  2098. slander

  2099. and

  2100. abusive

  2101. speech

  2102. from

  2103. our

  2104. mouths

  2105. and

  2106. put

  2107. on

  2108. a

  2109. heart

  2110. of

  2111. compassion

  2112. kindness

  2113. humility

  2114. gentleness

  2115. and

  2116. patience

  2117. bearing

  2118. with

  2119. one

  2120. another

  2121. and

  2122. forgiving

  2123. each

  2124. other

  2125. just

  2126. as

  2127. the

  2128. Lord

  2129. in

  2130. Christ

  2131. forgave

  2132. us

  2133. and

  2134. beyond

  2135. these

  2136. things

  2137. we

  2138. are

  2139. to

  2140. put

  2141. on

  2142. love

  2143. which

  2144. is

  2145. the

  2146. perfect

  2147. bond

  2148. of

  2149. unity

  2150. oh

  2151. Lord

  2152. we

  2153. have

  2154. failed

  2155. in

  2156. every

  2157. regard

  2158. to

  2159. do

  2160. what

  2161. you

  2162. have

  2163. called

  2164. us

  2165. to

  2166. do

  2167. but

  2168. most

  2169. importantly

  2170. we

  2171. have

  2172. failed

  2173. to

  2174. put

  2175. on

  2176. love

  2177. even

  2178. though

  2179. Jesus

  2180. told

  2181. us

  2182. that

  2183. the

  2184. law

  2185. and

  2186. the

  2187. prophets

  2188. are

  2189. summed

  2190. up

  2191. in

  2192. this

  2193. that

  2194. we

  2195. are

  2196. to

  2197. love

  2198. God

  2199. and

  2200. love

  2201. our

  2202. neighbor

  2203. and

  2204. then

  2205. demonstrated

  2206. for

  2207. us

  2208. that

  2209. we

  2210. show

  2211. our

  2212. love

  2213. for

  2214. God

  2215. by

  2216. loving

  2217. our

  2218. neighbor

  2219. yet

  2220. we

  2221. have

  2222. failed

  2223. we

  2224. have

  2225. sinned

  2226. against

  2227. you

  2228. oh

  2229. dear

  2230. Lord

  2231. hear

  2232. us

  2233. have

  2234. mercy

  2235. on

  2236. us

  2237. and

  2238. forgive

  2239. us

  2240. save

  2241. us

  2242. from

  2243. ourselves

  2244. again

  2245. and

  2246. even

  2247. despite

  2248. our

  2249. failures

  2250. glorify

  2251. your

  2252. name

  2253. give

  2254. us

  2255. the

  2256. grace

  2257. to

  2258. love

  2259. and

  2260. fully

  2261. surrender

  2262. to

  2263. you

  2264. that

  2265. you

  2266. would

  2267. love

  2268. through

  2269. us

  2270. with

  2271. the

  2272. same

  2273. love

  2274. with

  2275. which

  2276. you

  2277. have

  2278. loved

  2279. us

  2280. we

  2281. pray

  2282. this

  2283. knowing

  2284. your

  2285. faithful

  2286. in

  2287. Christ's

  2288. name
