  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. If you have the Bible with you, would you open it to Psalm 16?

  5. It is the psalm that we read already earlier in the worship service for our call to worship,

  6. but I'd like to read through it again.

  7. You can follow with me.

  8. As I read.

  9. May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face to shine upon us

  10. that your way may be known on earth, your saving power among all nations.

  11. Let the peoples praise you, O God.

  12. Let all the peoples praise you.

  13. Let the nations be glad and sing for joy,

  14. for you judge the peoples with equity and guide the nations upon earth.

  15. Let the peoples praise you, O God.

  16. Let all the peoples praise you.

  17. The earth has yielded its increase.

  18. God, our God, shall bless us.

  19. God, shall bless us.

  20. Let all the ends of the earth fear him.

  21. Bow with me as we pray before we enter into a study of this portion of God's word.

  22. Father, would you bless us now with the outpouring of your spirit,

  23. that we might understand your word, not just the words on the page,

  24. not just mental concepts.

  25. We need to know your word down deep in our souls,

  26. and only your spirit can take us there.

  27. So come and meet us and plant your truth in the depths of our hearts

  28. and cause it to grow and bear much fruit.

  29. So take the weakness of my words,

  30. that when all is said and done,

  31. we will know that through the working of your Holy Spirit,

  32. we will have heard from you.

  33. We pray in Jesus' name.

  34. Amen.

  35. Man, a pretty exciting day to see all these kids come up here

  36. and express their faith for the first time.

  37. I was a kid once, I think.

  38. It's been a while.

  39. But unfortunately, in my case,

  40. it was later in life when I came to faith,

  41. and because of that, I had to go through a lot of hard things,

  42. a lot of hard relationships and so forth,

  43. and a lot of just foolish things,

  44. until I came to the end of myself.

  45. And my heart was open to come to faith.

  46. And so for all of you kids,

  47. my prayer for you is really that you'll never have to do that,

  48. is that you will never know a day,

  49. and never lack of cherishing the fact that your Heavenly Father has embraced you as His own.

  50. And so as we, you know, as we witness this,

  51. I think it's a good opportunity for us,

  52. you know, for all the rest of us who have made our professions of faith,

  53. to go back and look at, really, what is,

  54. what does it mean for the rest of us to express faith?

  55. What does it mean for us, really, to be Christians?

  56. And so I would like to use and look at this Psalm 67,

  57. you know, that we have read earlier,

  58. because I think this Psalm really points us to

  59. one of the critical aspects of what it means to be in Christ.

  60. It points us to the core, in a sense,

  61. of what it means to be in relationship with God,

  62. and to enjoy fellowship with Him.

  63. And so let's dig in to this Psalm.

  64. And really, the first, I want us just to examine the Psalm itself,

  65. and then we will look at some of the implications of that.

  66. I love this Psalm.

  67. It's, you know, it's a very simply structured Psalm,

  68. which makes it pretty easy for us to understand.

  69. And the structure is called a chiasm.

  70. And this is a common literary tool in Hebrew writing,

  71. not just in poetry, but also in prose.

  72. But I pull this up for all you engineers.

  73. Because part of the beauty of the Psalms is in its structure.

  74. You know, it's not just the words, the flowery words,

  75. which Psalms is full of that,

  76. but the structure really points us to,

  77. and you'll see, I'm going to put a slide up here to show you,

  78. if we were going to structure this Psalm,

  79. this is what it would look like.

  80. In a chiasm, what you have is here in this Psalm,

  81. the first two verses are basically parallel

  82. and say the same thing, but in a little different way

  83. as the last two verses.

  84. And then you have verse 3 and verse 5 also parallel,

  85. but they are saying that they're exactly the same,

  86. which leads us to verse 4.

  87. And so all the structure acts like kind of a funnel

  88. pointing us to the core of what the Psalm says.

  89. And so, again, you engineers,

  90. you will rejoice in the symmetry of this Psalm.

  91. Everything's balanced.

  92. But what it points us to, again, is verse 4.

  93. So let's start at verse 4 and work our way back out.

  94. So verse 4, what's the core?

  95. What's the meaning of this?

  96. It's joy for the nations.

  97. God's intent and his purpose

  98. is that the nations, all the nations,

  99. would rejoice and know his joy.

  100. This Psalm really reflects, you know,

  101. it's a very strong missionary theme.

  102. And I love this because a lot of times

  103. we think you have to go to the New Testament

  104. to find missionary stuff in the Bible.

  105. But oh no, it's all through it.

  106. And this Psalm is such a great example.

  107. But even here, it points to the very heart of God.

  108. Because even way back in Genesis 12,

  109. when he first gives,

  110. God makes his first covenant with Abraham,

  111. at the heart of that covenant,

  112. he says,

  113. and I will bless those who bless you

  114. and him who dishonors you.

  115. I will curse it.

  116. And you all,

  117. the families of the earth

  118. will be blessed.

  119. All the families of the earth.

  120. God is saying,

  121. not just you,

  122. but you,

  123. through you,

  124. my intent,

  125. my focus,

  126. is to see blessing come to

  127. every family

  128. on the earth.

  129. And so this is his work

  130. that he's doing in Abraham.

  131. And so his promise

  132. that he's making with this one family

  133. is global

  134. from the very beginning.

  135. And so why would the nations

  136. be so joyful?

  137. Well,

  138. in that verse 4,

  139. I love the words that he says there

  140. because God judges the earth,

  141. the peoples,

  142. with equity.

  143. In other words,

  144. he is just.

  145. God is just.

  146. And again,

  147. I love this.

  148. When we think of the beauty of God,

  149. we think of reasons

  150. why we rejoice in God.

  151. Justice is not one of those things

  152. that immediately jumps out at us

  153. because sometimes it scares us.

  154. But I want you to imagine.

  155. I want you to think

  156. of a world,

  157. what our world would be like

  158. if it was just.

  159. Let's try to imagine

  160. a just world.

  161. In a just world,

  162. people no longer

  163. experience

  164. and have to suffer

  165. under injustice.

  166. In a just world,

  167. people are no longer oppressed.

  168. In a just world,

  169. the powerful

  170. no longer

  171. exploit

  172. the weak

  173. and the helpless.

  174. In a just world,

  175. all men,

  176. women,

  177. and children

  178. are treated

  179. with dignity.

  180. Dignity

  181. as of those

  182. that those deserve

  183. who are created

  184. in the very image

  185. of God.

  186. A just world

  187. is a world

  188. where there's no more abuse

  189. for the vulnerable.

  190. There's no more brutality

  191. on the innocent.

  192. There's no more

  193. racism.

  194. There's no more exploitation.

  195. Our society

  196. will be a society

  197. of dignity

  198. and a place

  199. of peace.

  200. And everything

  201. will be

  202. as it was meant

  203. to be.

  204. And that's the promise

  205. that comes with God.

  206. He is a just

  207. king.

  208. He rules

  209. with justice.

  210. And if that's the case,

  211. no wonder

  212. the nations

  213. rejoice

  214. and sing

  215. for gladness

  216. because

  217. this is the world

  218. that he is moving

  219. to create.

  220. This is why

  221. the world rejoices.

  222. They rejoice

  223. in a king

  224. who reigns

  225. over all things

  226. gloriously

  227. and beautifully

  228. and justly.

  229. So that is the source.

  230. The nations

  231. rejoice

  232. and are glad

  233. in all that God is

  234. because they see now

  235. that he is

  236. beautiful.

  237. And so then

  238. we move out

  239. a little bit.

  240. Now we look at

  241. verse 3

  242. and verse 5.

  243. And then he simply says,

  244. let all the peoples

  245. praise you.

  246. Oh God,

  247. let all the peoples

  248. praise you.

  249. And it through

  250. their joy,

  251. the people

  252. of the world,

  253. all of the nations

  254. are brought

  255. to worship.

  256. And this is

  257. important to note,

  258. joy for the world

  259. comes

  260. through

  261. worship.

  262. You know,

  263. I'm not talking

  264. about just

  265. a church service.

  266. I'm not talking

  267. about like what

  268. we do here

  269. on Sunday morning

  270. though I hope

  271. that's what takes

  272. place here

  273. on Sunday morning.

  274. But it's

  275. worship.

  276. Worship is

  277. something that's

  278. not just

  279. things,

  280. you know,

  281. practices that we

  282. do,

  283. but it refers

  284. to something

  285. deep in our

  286. hearts,

  287. something that

  288. actually gives

  289. us our greatest

  290. sense of joy.

  291. Worship

  292. is integral

  293. to what

  294. we

  295. love.

  296. What I enjoy

  297. the most.

  298. What I think

  299. is the most

  300. beautiful.

  301. What I think

  302. is the most

  303. attractive.

  304. What consumes

  305. me.

  306. You know,

  307. if,

  308. in all this,

  309. what I worship

  310. then will

  311. shape my

  312. life

  313. in all

  314. that I do.

  315. If I love

  316. golf,

  317. then

  318. I'm going

  319. to play

  320. golf

  321. a lot.

  322. Golf

  323. is going

  324. to consume

  325. my time.

  326. Golf

  327. is going

  328. to consume

  329. my money

  330. because I've

  331. got to have

  332. the right

  333. equipment in

  334. order to

  335. play.

  336. I'm going

  337. to talk

  338. to you

  339. a lot

  340. about golf

  341. and my

  342. whole

  343. mentality,

  344. my sense

  345. of well-being

  346. is going

  347. to rest

  348. on how

  349. well I

  350. play golf,

  351. which is

  352. scary,

  353. to say the

  354. least.

  355. I'm going

  356. to spend

  357. my time

  358. on the

  359. course,

  360. you know,

  361. and it's,

  362. I find

  363. my greatest

  364. joy,

  365. my greatest

  366. satisfaction,

  367. and my

  368. interest in

  369. golf,

  370. and so it

  371. becomes all

  372. consuming.

  373. And there

  374. are some

  375. of us

  376. out here

  377. like that.

  378. For you

  379. it might

  380. not be

  381. golf.

  382. Maybe it's

  383. music.

  384. Maybe it's

  385. your friends.

  386. Maybe it's

  387. your kids,

  388. your grandkids.

  389. Maybe it's

  390. your job.

  391. I don't

  392. know what

  393. it would

  394. be.

  395. But the

  396. problem

  397. with all

  398. of these

  399. things,

  400. these things,

  401. is that

  402. as we

  403. find so

  404. much,

  405. we devote

  406. ourselves to

  407. them so

  408. much,

  409. and we

  410. get consumed

  411. by them

  412. so much,

  413. they have

  414. no power

  415. to satisfy

  416. the deep

  417. hunger down

  418. in our

  419. souls,

  420. down in

  421. our hearts.

  422. They do

  423. not have

  424. the power

  425. to bring

  426. the satisfaction

  427. for which

  428. we are

  429. hungry,

  430. especially

  431. golf.

  432. they just

  433. leave us

  434. empty.

  435. And there's

  436. only one

  437. who can

  438. help us

  439. to find

  440. and can

  441. satisfy

  442. that hunger

  443. for deep

  444. joy,

  445. and that

  446. one is

  447. the king

  448. who rules

  449. justly,

  450. who is

  451. beautiful

  452. beyond

  453. all others.

  454. And so

  455. when the

  456. world comes

  457. to the place

  458. where he

  459. is the one

  460. that they

  461. worship,

  462. of course,

  463. they find

  464. the joy

  465. that they

  466. have longed

  467. for all

  468. their lives.

  469. And the

  470. heart finally

  471. sings in

  472. tune with

  473. the very

  474. source of

  475. life itself.

  476. And so

  477. worship is

  478. integral here.

  479. But now we

  480. move out to

  481. the first

  482. two verses

  483. again and

  484. then the

  485. last two

  486. verses.

  487. In here

  488. we see

  489. where it

  490. all begins.

  491. Now how

  492. do they

  493. find this

  494. ultimate

  495. source of

  496. joy?

  497. How are

  498. they led

  499. to this

  500. place of

  501. worship

  502. and where

  503. they see

  504. that this

  505. king is

  506. the most

  507. desirable

  508. and their

  509. affections are

  510. captured by

  511. it?

  512. Well,

  513. it's that

  514. God

  515. himself

  516. takes the

  517. initiative

  518. and pours

  519. out his

  520. blessings upon

  521. us.

  522. It's like

  523. he

  524. intentionally

  525. wins over

  526. our

  527. affections.

  528. He wins

  529. our hearts

  530. by the

  531. goodness that

  532. he pours

  533. out on

  534. all of us.

  535. But what

  536. does that

  537. goodness look

  538. like?

  539. You know,

  540. it's not just

  541. in material

  542. benefits which

  543. we see a

  544. glimpse of in

  545. verses 6 and

  546. 7.

  547. But in

  548. verses 1 and

  549. 2, he's

  550. talking about

  551. blessings on

  552. a whole

  553. different level.

  554. The blessings

  555. he's talking

  556. about here

  557. begin with,

  558. look where he

  559. says, may

  560. God bless us,

  561. be gracious to

  562. us and bless

  563. us and make

  564. his face to

  565. shine upon

  566. us.

  567. That,

  568. kind of with

  569. the purpose

  570. of making

  571. known on,

  572. making your

  573. way to be

  574. known on

  575. earth and

  576. your saving

  577. power among

  578. all nations.

  579. This calls

  580. us back to

  581. a blessing

  582. that was

  583. given to

  584. Aaron back

  585. in Numbers

    Numbers 6 chapter mention

  586. chapter 6,

  587. which reads,

  588. the Lord

  589. bless you and

  590. keep you.

  591. The Lord

  592. make his face

  593. to shine upon

  594. you and be

  595. gracious to

  596. you.

  597. The Lord

  598. lift up his

  599. countenance

  600. upon you and

  601. give you

  602. peace.

  603. Do you see

  604. what the heart

  605. of that blessing

  606. is?

  607. it's not

  608. stuff.

  609. It's God.

  610. It's not

  611. the gifts.

  612. It's the

  613. giver.

  614. And so in

  615. a Jewish

  616. mind,

  617. when they

  618. thought of

  619. blessing,

  620. when they

  621. thought of

  622. getting good

  623. things from

  624. God and

  625. God being

  626. gracious to

  627. them,

  628. they weren't

  629. thinking

  630. necessarily of

  631. just about

  632. all the

  633. stuff that

  634. he might

  635. provide.

  636. And when

  637. they start

  638. asking for

  639. this and

  640. that and

  641. that that

  642. he gives

  643. them,

  644. they want

  645. God himself

  646. to turn

  647. his face

  648. towards them.

  649. They want

  650. him near.

  651. They want

  652. him to be

  653. present with

  654. them.

  655. Because they

  656. know that

  657. if they get

  658. him,

  659. they've got

  660. everything.

  661. That there's

  662. nothing better.

  663. There's nothing

  664. more gracious.

  665. There's nothing

  666. more that they

  667. could get.

  668. And so this

  669. is what they

  670. want.

  671. The greatest

  672. gift was

  673. God himself.

  674. You know,

  675. I remember

  676. when I was a

  677. teenager,

  678. you know,

  679. I may have

  680. mentioned this

  681. before,

  682. that, you

  683. know,

  684. with my dad,

  685. my dad was

  686. kind of

  687. distant from

  688. me in a lot

  689. of ways.

  690. And I remember

  691. a lot of those

  692. teenage years,

  693. I was an

  694. angry teenager.

  695. teenager.

  696. And I was

  697. angry primarily

  698. at my dad.

  699. But when I

  700. look back on

  701. those days,

  702. there was one

  703. thing I wanted.

  704. My dad gave

  705. me a lot.

  706. He paid for

  707. all of my

  708. college.

  709. He provided

  710. so much for

  711. us and for

  712. me.

  713. I really was

  714. lacking nothing.

  715. But I

  716. remember down

  717. inside, there

  718. was only one

  719. thing I wanted.

  720. I wanted him.

  721. Because what

  722. satisfies us

  723. is not

  724. things.

  725. It's

  726. someone.

  727. I'm made for

  728. relationship.

  729. I'm not just

  730. made for stuff.

  731. I'm made for

  732. relationship.

  733. relationship.

  734. And God

  735. gives us

  736. relationship.

  737. And he

  738. pours it out

  739. in such

  740. abundance

  741. that the

  742. God of all

  743. creation

  744. would now

  745. come and

  746. call us

  747. friend.

  748. Even

  749. better,

  750. he calls us

  751. son or

  752. daughter.

  753. brother.

  754. He calls us

  755. beloved.

  756. And he

  757. does it

  758. graciously.

  759. No, we

  760. don't deserve

  761. it.

  762. But he

  763. pours it out

  764. on us.

  765. And so

  766. this blessing

  767. is given to

  768. his people

  769. with a

  770. purpose.

  771. he gives

  772. it to

  773. his people,

  774. to Israel,

  775. so that

  776. that the

  777. world would

  778. know,

  779. that the

  780. nations

  781. would come

  782. to know

  783. his joy

  784. and worship

  785. him as

  786. beautiful,

  787. and through

  788. that,

  789. that they

  790. would know

  791. finally the

  792. depth of

  793. joy that

  794. they were

  795. created to

  796. know.

  797. That's

  798. why he

  799. pours out

  800. his

  801. blessing.

  802. I mean,

  803. this is

  804. what we

  805. mean when

  806. we say

  807. experiencing

  808. and expressing

  809. grace.

  810. This is

  811. why this

  812. is kind

  813. of our

  814. great motto

  815. here at

  816. Southwood,

  817. because this

  818. is the

  819. flow of

  820. what God

  821. intends

  822. for us.

  823. He pours

  824. out his

  825. rich

  826. abundance

  827. upon us

  828. with a

  829. purpose

  830. so that

  831. as we

  832. experience

  833. the lavish

  834. abundance

  835. of knowing

  836. Christ and

  837. being in

  838. Christ and

  839. being forgiven

  840. by Christ,

  841. that that

  842. abundance is

  843. more than

  844. what can be

  845. contained in

  846. us.

  847. And it's

  848. got to

  849. flow.

  850. And so

  851. that's what

  852. he intends.

  853. Coming to

  854. Christ brings

  855. to us this

  856. deep satisfaction

  857. and joy which

  858. we have

  859. craved,

  860. sets our

  861. hearts to

  862. worship in

  863. joy,

  864. and that

  865. joy has

  866. got to go

  867. somewhere.

  868. Joy is

  869. not full

  870. until it

  871. is expressed.

  872. when Marshall

  873. wins the

  874. national

  875. championship

  876. next year,

  877. I am

  878. going to

  879. be excited.

  880. And you

  881. will hear

  882. about it

  883. if.

  884. love.

  885. But when

  886. something,

  887. when we

  888. rejoice over

  889. something,

  890. it has to

  891. go from

  892. us because

  893. it's not

  894. full until

  895. we're able

  896. to share

  897. it.

  898. And so

  899. this is the

  900. plan.

  901. This is the

  902. way God

  903. designs us.

  904. So what

  905. he's called

  906. us to,

  907. he pours out

  908. the abundance

  909. of his,

  910. the wealth

  911. of his

  912. grace,

  913. lavishes it

  914. upon us,

  915. fills our

  916. hearts with

  917. joy to

  918. the point

  919. where it

  920. just overflows

  921. on anybody

  922. and everybody

  923. close and

  924. even on

  925. some far

  926. away.

  927. But it

  928. goes from

  929. us.

  930. It cannot

  931. be contained.

  932. So,

  933. what are

  934. the implications?

  935. Well, I

  936. think there

  937. are several.

  938. first is

  939. grace is

  940. never given

  941. just for

  942. you.

  943. It's

  944. never given

  945. just for

  946. you.

  947. When God

  948. pours out

  949. his grace

  950. and we

  951. experience that

  952. glorious blessing,

  953. knowing him,

  954. it's never just

  955. for us,

  956. it's intended

  957. from the very

  958. beginning to

  959. go from

  960. us outward

  961. to others.

  962. because he

  963. pours so

  964. much into

  965. our hearts

  966. that our

  967. hearts cannot

  968. contain it.

  969. And I

  970. think some

  971. of us live

  972. with this

  973. misconception

  974. that when we

  975. come to

  976. Christ,

  977. we come to

  978. Christ because

  979. we need

  980. his grace

  981. because our

  982. life is a

  983. wreck and we

  984. need Jesus to

  985. come and work

  986. in us

  987. to make us

  988. whole and to

  989. give us

  990. life again.

  991. I mean,

  992. that's the

  993. way I

  994. came.

  995. Early on

  996. back at the

  997. university,

  998. I mean,

  999. my life was

  1000. a wreck

  1001. in so many

  1002. ways.

  1003. And so when

  1004. I finally

  1005. began to

  1006. understand the

  1007. gospel,

  1008. I remember

  1009. the prayer

  1010. that I

  1011. prayed and

  1012. I said,

  1013. Jesus,

  1014. you know

  1015. more about

  1016. my life

  1017. than I

  1018. do.

  1019. Come and

  1020. help me.

  1021. And so in

  1022. so many

  1023. ways,

  1024. he did

  1025. bring sanity

  1026. and order

  1027. in life

  1028. again to

  1029. me.

  1030. But,

  1031. as soon as

  1032. that happened

  1033. though,

  1034. I started

  1035. sharing what

  1036. had happened

  1037. and what I

  1038. experienced

  1039. because it

  1040. was incredible.

  1041. I felt I was

  1042. walking this far

  1043. off the ground.

  1044. I was so

  1045. elated about

  1046. what I

  1047. received in

  1048. Christ.

  1049. I started

  1050. talking to

  1051. everybody who

  1052. would listen

  1053. to me about

  1054. Jesus.

  1055. And some

  1056. who didn't

  1057. listen to

  1058. me.

  1059. In fact,

  1060. I earned

  1061. the title

  1062. of being

  1063. a Jesus

  1064. freak.

  1065. I know my

  1066. haircut didn't

  1067. help much.

  1068. But it

  1069. wasn't work.

  1070. It was just

  1071. something that I

  1072. had to do.

  1073. it just

  1074. came out.

  1075. I'm not

  1076. that way

  1077. much anymore.

  1078. Yeah,

  1079. my hair's

  1080. more sane

  1081. now.

  1082. I haven't

  1083. been referred

  1084. to as a

  1085. freak in

  1086. quite a

  1087. while.

  1088. I'm not

  1089. as belligerent

  1090. or obnoxious

  1091. in talking to

  1092. people about

  1093. the gospel.

  1094. Yeah,

  1095. I mean,

  1096. I've

  1097. matured.

  1098. I'm not

  1099. sure that's

  1100. all there

  1101. is.

  1102. Have I

  1103. lost the

  1104. wonder

  1105. of what it

  1106. means to be

  1107. in Christ?

  1108. Have I

  1109. lost a

  1110. sense of

  1111. wonder

  1112. that I

  1113. am totally

  1114. forgiven?

  1115. Have I

  1116. lost a

  1117. sense of

  1118. wonder

  1119. that me

  1120. in all

  1121. of my

  1122. brokenness

  1123. Christ?

  1124. Am in

  1125. Christ?

  1126. That I

  1127. am

  1128. his

  1129. beloved?

  1130. That he

  1131. has now

  1132. made me

  1133. the suitable

  1134. dwelling

  1135. for himself.

  1136. is that

  1137. why

  1138. I'm not

  1139. so obnoxious

  1140. anymore?

  1141. Maybe I've

  1142. I've lost

  1143. a sense

  1144. of wonder.

  1145. I think

  1146. it's so

  1147. easy for

  1148. me,

  1149. for us,

  1150. to come

  1151. to the

  1152. place

  1153. where when

  1154. we go to

  1155. the Father

  1156. to experience

  1157. more of

  1158. his grace,

  1159. we're simply

  1160. going because

  1161. I want

  1162. myself to

  1163. be better.

  1164. And we

  1165. never see

  1166. the depth

  1167. and the

  1168. riches

  1169. and the

  1170. wealth

  1171. of all

  1172. that he

  1173. has poured

  1174. out on

  1175. us in

  1176. Christ.

  1177. And so

  1178. our own

  1179. joy

  1180. is

  1181. stunted

  1182. and it

  1183. doesn't

  1184. go very

  1185. far.

  1186. so maybe

  1187. what I

  1188. need

  1189. is not

  1190. just to

  1191. be more

  1192. obedient.

  1193. Maybe I

  1194. need a

  1195. fresh look

  1196. at all

  1197. that Jesus

  1198. is for

  1199. me.

  1200. you know,

  1201. secondly,

  1202. grace is

  1203. never for

  1204. just us,

  1205. but also

  1206. grace leads

  1207. us to

  1208. worship.

  1209. When we

  1210. experience that

  1211. lavish grace

  1212. that comes

  1213. from Jesus

  1214. alone,

  1215. you know,

  1216. his tender,

  1217. loving,

  1218. gracious heart

  1219. towards us,

  1220. our

  1221. affections,

  1222. our hearts

  1223. are then

  1224. captured

  1225. by that

  1226. grace and

  1227. love.

  1228. And when I

  1229. am loved

  1230. like that,

  1231. then I am

  1232. going to

  1233. love him.

  1234. when I

  1235. see him

  1236. as

  1237. beautiful,

  1238. when I

  1239. see him

  1240. as so

  1241. desirable,

  1242. then he

  1243. is,

  1244. I am

  1245. going to

  1246. become

  1247. consumed

  1248. by him.

  1249. In my

  1250. affections,

  1251. my heart,

  1252. everything is

  1253. going to be

  1254. directed

  1255. towards him.

  1256. This has

  1257. everything to

  1258. do also

  1259. with how

  1260. we go

  1261. about

  1262. doing

  1263. missions,

  1264. in our

  1265. communities,

  1266. or wherever

  1267. it is,

  1268. is that

  1269. we're not

  1270. out for

  1271. conversions.

  1272. We're

  1273. out to

  1274. call people

  1275. to worship,

  1276. to fall

  1277. in love

  1278. with and

  1279. be consumed

  1280. by the

  1281. beauty and

  1282. the glory

  1283. of Jesus.

  1284. You know,

  1285. a couple

  1286. weeks,

  1287. actually,

  1288. three weeks

  1289. from tomorrow,

  1290. I'm going

  1291. to have

  1292. my second

  1293. granddaughter.

  1294. And it's

  1295. about time.

  1296. Because

  1297. there's

  1298. seven

  1299. grandsons

  1300. and one

  1301. other little

  1302. princess.

  1303. And to

  1304. have one

  1305. other little

  1306. granddaughter

  1307. is going

  1308. to be

  1309. great

  1310. with all

  1311. those boys.

  1312. And she's

  1313. not here yet,

  1314. three weeks

  1315. away,

  1316. but she's

  1317. beautiful.

  1318. beautiful.

  1319. I know

  1320. she's

  1321. beautiful.

  1322. And you're

  1323. going to

  1324. hear more

  1325. about her.

  1326. But if I

  1327. can be

  1328. captivated

  1329. by this

  1330. little,

  1331. very

  1332. broken,

  1333. as beautiful

  1334. she is,

  1335. yet very

  1336. sinful

  1337. little

  1338. girl,

  1339. how

  1340. greatly

  1341. is my

  1342. heart going

  1343. to be

  1344. captivated

  1345. when it

  1346. sees and

  1347. experiences

  1348. the

  1349. beautiful

  1350. one.

  1351. And then

  1352. turn to

  1353. worship.

  1354. And see,

  1355. that's what

  1356. missions is.

  1357. It is us

  1358. worshiping.

  1359. And out

  1360. of our

  1361. worship,

  1362. being consumed

  1363. by this

  1364. person who

  1365. is so

  1366. beautiful and

  1367. glorious that

  1368. we cannot

  1369. help but

  1370. talk about

  1371. them.

  1372. But that's

  1373. what we

  1374. call the

  1375. world to.

  1376. Not just

  1377. to convert,

  1378. but to

  1379. love.

  1380. Third

  1381. implication.

  1382. Grace

  1383. leads to

  1384. joy.

  1385. for the

  1386. nations.

  1387. And this

  1388. has big

  1389. implications

  1390. for me.

  1391. You know,

  1392. worship is

  1393. that gift

  1394. that God

  1395. gives us

  1396. through which

  1397. we can

  1398. express

  1399. our joy

  1400. and our

  1401. gladness

  1402. in Him

  1403. and all

  1404. that He

  1405. is.

  1406. Joy,

  1407. though,

  1408. in our

  1409. worship,

  1410. joy

  1411. is the

  1412. ultimate

  1413. expression

  1414. of worship.

  1415. We love

  1416. what gives

  1417. us joy.

  1418. And so,

  1419. this is the

  1420. response.

  1421. This is what

  1422. God's grace

  1423. does for us.

  1424. When we

  1425. experience that

  1426. freedom,

  1427. we experience

  1428. His lavish

  1429. abundance

  1430. poured out

  1431. upon us.

  1432. It is joy.

  1433. joy.

  1434. But if

  1435. joy is the

  1436. essence

  1437. of worship,

  1438. and if that's

  1439. what we're

  1440. calling the

  1441. world to

  1442. do,

  1443. then that

  1444. is how

  1445. they're going

  1446. to hear

  1447. about Jesus.

  1448. It's going

  1449. to be

  1450. from my

  1451. joy.

  1452. joy.

  1453. You know,

  1454. I've got a

  1455. group of

  1456. very close

  1457. friends who

  1458. are not

  1459. believers.

  1460. And I so

  1461. much would

  1462. long for

  1463. them to

  1464. know Jesus,

  1465. but again,

  1466. it's not that

  1467. I want them

  1468. to become

  1469. religious.

  1470. I see

  1471. emptiness.

  1472. And I

  1473. want them

  1474. to taste

  1475. the joy.

  1476. I want

  1477. them to

  1478. taste

  1479. what it's

  1480. like to

  1481. be forgiven

  1482. and to be

  1483. counted as

  1484. righteous

  1485. and to be

  1486. given the

  1487. hope of

  1488. being the

  1489. friend of

  1490. God.

  1491. I want

  1492. them to

  1493. taste that.

  1494. But how

  1495. are they

  1496. going to

  1497. hear it?

  1498. How are

  1499. they going

  1500. to taste

  1501. it?

  1502. They're

  1503. going to

  1504. taste it

  1505. because of

  1506. my joy

  1507. overflowing

  1508. to them.

  1509. That is

  1510. how the

  1511. nations

  1512. will know.

  1513. So what

  1514. has to

  1515. happen

  1516. with me?

  1517. it all

  1518. starts

  1519. here.

  1520. And it

  1521. starts

  1522. for me

  1523. remembering

  1524. what does

  1525. his grace

  1526. mean?

  1527. What have

  1528. I been

  1529. given?

  1530. What has

  1531. he done

  1532. for me

  1533. in Christ?

  1534. Christ.

  1535. And so

  1536. as we

  1537. come

  1538. really

  1539. and

  1540. celebrate

  1541. at the

  1542. table

  1543. together,

  1544. this is

  1545. what we're

  1546. doing.

  1547. We are

  1548. remembering.

  1549. As we

  1550. come here

  1551. to this

  1552. table,

  1553. we are

  1554. remembering

  1555. this gift

  1556. of lavish

  1557. grace

  1558. that my

  1559. sin

  1560. was paid

  1561. for

  1562. in

  1563. full.

  1564. In my

  1565. sin that

  1566. was so

  1567. great,

  1568. it required

  1569. the death

  1570. of the

  1571. Son of

  1572. God

  1573. who paid

  1574. it

  1575. gladly.

  1576. And now

  1577. I am

  1578. washed

  1579. clean

  1580. and I

  1581. am united

  1582. to him.

  1583. And so

  1584. as we

  1585. remember,

  1586. this table

  1587. is a

  1588. table,

  1589. yes,

  1590. of somber

  1591. reflection

  1592. because we

  1593. have to see

  1594. the context

  1595. of why

  1596. it's here.

  1597. but this

  1598. is a

  1599. place

  1600. of joy

  1601. because

  1602. here

  1603. through

  1604. the

  1605. sacrifice

  1606. I have

  1607. been made

  1608. the friend

  1609. and the

  1610. beloved

  1611. of God

  1612. himself.

  1613. And so

  1614. as we

  1615. eat

  1616. and drink

  1617. remember

  1618. this

  1619. lavishness

  1620. of grace

  1621. and let

  1622. it fill

  1623. your hearts

  1624. with joy

  1625. again

  1626. so that

  1627. the

  1628. nations

  1629. will

  1630. rejoice.

  1631. Let's

  1632. pray

  1633. together.

  1634. Father,

  1635. we thank

  1636. you for

  1637. this

  1638. table

  1639. but yet

  1640. our

  1641. words

  1642. are so

  1643. trite

  1644. when we're

  1645. faced with

  1646. really what

  1647. took place

  1648. here

  1649. because you

  1650. loved us

  1651. when we

  1652. hated you.

  1653. you came

  1654. for us.

  1655. You won

  1656. us to

  1657. yourself

  1658. and you

  1659. continue to

  1660. win us to

  1661. yourself by

  1662. lavishing your

  1663. goodness upon

  1664. us.

  1665. Father,

  1666. help us to

  1667. remember

  1668. we give you

  1669. thanks for

  1670. this table

  1671. but help us

  1672. to

  1673. comprehend

  1674. the enormity

  1675. of this

  1676. gift

  1677. that our

  1678. hearts would

  1679. swell with

  1680. joy

  1681. and that

  1682. joy

  1683. would

  1684. overflow

  1685. to

  1686. everyone

  1687. around us.

  1688. Our

  1689. cul-de-sacs,

  1690. our

  1691. subdivisions,

  1692. our

  1693. communities

  1694. and the

  1695. nations.

  1696. So as we

  1697. eat,

  1698. would you

  1699. feed us

  1700. with your

  1701. grace?

  1702. We pray

  1703. in Jesus'

  1704. name.

  1705. Amen.

  1706. Amen.
