  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. Good morning. If you have your Bibles, take them and open them up. We'll be in Luke chapter 10 this morning.

    Luke 10 chapter mention

  4. We're going to continue on with our series in Luke.

  5. If you remember, Will last week preached on a couple of things from Luke chapter 9,

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  6. the rejection that the disciples face as they went forward with the message of gospel truth

  7. to the Samaritan city that wanted nothing at all to do with Jesus.

  8. And then he discussed in a roundabout way the reality of what should be of first importance to us

  9. as his followers, as he saw many say, I want to follow you.

  10. And he said, okay, let's do it.

  11. And they said, well, I have to do something else first.

  12. So that really laid the groundwork well for how we're moving this week

  13. as we discuss what is the mission that Jesus is calling these people to.

  14. He had to be serious about it.

  15. Jesus is getting pretty intense.

  16. He understands what is on the threshold for him

  17. and what is the fight that's set before his disciples and his followers.

  18. So let me pray for us.

  19. We have a lot of text this morning.

  20. We're going to cover chapter 10, verses 1 through 24.

  21. So I'm going to try to break it down into a couple different segments.

  22. But before I do, let's pray.

  23. Father, we desperately need you.

  24. You've given us your word, your communication to little minds of the great things that you are about,

  25. of your perfect love and your perfect character,

  26. your perfect joy and your perfect happiness,

  27. and the gift of your son to ungrateful people like us.

  28. We pray that we would sense the reality of your mission.

  29. We pray that we would sense anew the nearness of your kingdom

  30. as we hear about your son and read about him working in the world and using people,

  31. little human vessels as actual agents in the world to bring about your kingdom in it.

  32. I pray for myself as I'm not fit to preach this.

  33. So I pray that the words of my mouth and the meditations of all of our hearts would be glorifying to you.

  34. And I pray that we would be open, as Ron said,

  35. to the message that you are bringing of hope and of salvation.

  36. In the name, the great name of your son, our King Jesus. Amen.

  37. Military things run in my family.

  38. My grandfather always said that I should have gone to the military before going to college.

  39. He was right. I did not.

  40. But I'm interested when I see stories, and a lot of them these days are tragic.

  41. I was reading one recently of Army Captain William Swenson.

  42. He's a Medal of Honor winner,

  43. and he and an Army partner of his were assisting an Afghan security team,

  44. as well as 12 Marines and a Navy corpsman.

  45. And they were doing a walk to a location that was about 10 miles outside of Pakistan in Afghanistan.

  46. I can't pronounce the name of the town, so I'm not going to try.

  47. And as they were walking, the intention was to go and meet with the town's leaders,

  48. to have some tea with them,

  49. and discuss what it would look like to assist them in rebuilding a mosque that was there.

  50. Basically, you know, goodwill relations.

  51. And as they're on the road, they get ambushed.

  52. And they're flanked on three sides by insurgents.

  53. And Captain Swenson called for backup, but they declined him.

  54. The forward base Joyce that was there on that side of Afghanistan declined it,

  55. saying they were too close to a civilian population,

  56. and they couldn't provide them with anything.

  57. So here's this man and his partner who were kind of in charge of this mixed force of people

  58. getting ambushed and in the midst of a giant firefight.

  59. And the story of Captain Swenson is nothing less than amazing,

  60. because this guy's love and passion for his men,

  61. and even the people that weren't his men,

  62. was unmatched on that day as he ran to the front over and over again,

  63. pulling back men who were dead,

  64. pulling back men who were wounded,

  65. constantly putting himself in harm's way to try to execute the retreat.

  66. And he fought for hours.

  67. He was trained for war,

  68. but the Afghans and the Marines and the Navy Corpsmen around him

  69. desperately needed his leadership in this situation.

  70. And with all he could muster, he fought,

  71. and he loved, and he tried.

  72. He tried to save.

  73. With where we are in our text here with Jesus,

  74. his intensity and his intention is really starting to peak.

  75. He knows the road laid out before him,

  76. and he needs to equip his followers in the fight for eternity.

  77. The idolatry of self-motivation that Ron was speaking of earlier

  78. needs to be replaced by being motivated by Christ.

  79. And hopefully our text today will help us understand

  80. what it meant for the followers of Christ in Luke 10,

  81. as well as what it means for us to be able to declare

  82. the kingdom of God is near.

  83. You see a three-point outline on your bulletin,

  84. and I've broken it down to three sections.

  85. The instructions will try to cover verses 1 through 9 of Luke 10.

  86. So look down at your text or look on the screen behind me as I read.

  87. After this, the Lord appointed 72 others.

  88. After this meaning, after what Will preached on last week,

  89. there doesn't seem to be a time break there.

  90. We're just moving right along.

  91. After this, the Lord appointed 72 others and sent them ahead of him,

  92. two by two, into every town and place where he was about to go.

  93. And he said to them,

  94. the harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few.

  95. Therefore pray.

  96. Pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest

  97. to send out laborers into his harvest.

  98. Go your way.

  99. Behold, I'm sending you out as lambs in the midst of wolves.

  100. That's good news.

  101. Carry no money bag, no knapsack, no sandals,

  102. and greet no one on the road.

  103. Whatever house you enter, first say,

  104. peace be to this house.

  105. And if a son of peace is there,

  106. your peace will rest upon him.

  107. But if not, it'll return to you, better news.

  108. And remain in the same house,

  109. eating and drinking whatever they provide,

  110. for the laborer deserves his wages.

  111. Do not go from house to house.

  112. Whenever you enter a town and they receive you,

  113. eat what is set before you.

  114. Heal the sick in it and say to them,

  115. the kingdom of God has come near to you.

  116. 72 are sent out, two by two.

  117. Fairly customary in that time,

  118. two by two for multiple reasons,

  119. not the least of which,

  120. two people constituted a valid witness.

  121. So they're sent two by two out to go

  122. to places that Jesus is going to go.

  123. And he gives them the authority of himself.

  124. When they are going, they are going as him.

  125. It doesn't make you feel great when you're these people.

  126. You may remember I preached a few weeks ago

  127. on when he sent the 12 out and told them,

  128. hey, good news for you too.

  129. You're going to be fighting demons

  130. and stuff like that in my name.

  131. No, you're not prepared for it.

  132. But it's what's going to happen.

  133. The fight is real.

  134. Your day-to-day lives are over.

  135. You've been called by me.

  136. You are followers of me.

  137. And this is where we're headed.

  138. And he tells this group,

  139. don't take money.

  140. Don't take a backpack.

  141. Don't take sandals.

  142. And that doesn't mean they can't wear sandals.

  143. It means don't take an extra pair of sandals.

  144. Don't carry things with you.

  145. Don't even talk to people while you're going there.

  146. It's urgent.

  147. We need to get there.

  148. We need to do this.

  149. There were itinerant preachers

  150. that preached any number of things

  151. that would carry around their knapsacks and money

  152. because they were trying to raise money for themselves.

  153. And he's saying,

  154. no, you're not going to go with anything like that.

  155. You're going to go and simply bring the shalom,

  156. the peace of God to these people.

  157. And sons of peace will respond with that.

  158. Those who are not sons of peace

  159. will not respond to that.

  160. And here are my simple instructions for you.

  161. First thing we see there in verse two,

  162. pray.

  163. Pray.

  164. Why?

  165. Because the harvest is many,

  166. but the laborers are few.

  167. Sending out 72 of you,

  168. we need the laborers to be multiplied.

  169. Pray.

  170. You can't go forward on your own.

  171. Pray.

  172. It focuses you on the things of mine

  173. and of the kingdom,

  174. the nearness that you're bringing forth to people.

  175. Pray.

  176. In verses three through eight,

  177. he goes on to discuss several things

  178. that have to do with going.

  179. Go your way.

  180. Behold,

  181. I am sending you out as lambs

  182. in the midst of wolves.

  183. There's not encouraging news.

  184. Carry no money bag,

  185. no knapsack,

  186. no sandals,

  187. and don't talk to anybody.

  188. That'll take too long.

  189. When you get to the house,

  190. tell them peace is with them.

  191. And whatever they put in front of you,

  192. eat it.

  193. This is a little bit counter-cultural.

  194. What's happening in verse four?

  195. You have your lambs going out in the midst of wolves.

  196. Talk about having to trust God and trust Jesus.

  197. That doesn't come naturally.

  198. I'm afraid that most of us don't know

  199. the everyday reality of the chance of being killed

  200. or something of the sort for going out.

  201. And Jesus may be talking about that,

  202. but he's more than likely talking about

  203. their need to rely upon him

  204. and the dangers that they'll face

  205. as they go out to be self-sufficient,

  206. as Ron was talking about.

  207. I talked about how it was counter-cultural for them

  208. to not have anything with them.

  209. This doesn't make sense.

  210. They're going to be dirty.

  211. They're going to be smelly.

  212. If a sandal breaks,

  213. you leave it on the road.

  214. You don't have an extra pair.

  215. And yet you're going forth with the kingdom.

  216. Verses five and six is a beautiful picture

  217. of what they hope to encounter.

  218. When you say, peace be with you,

  219. if a son of peace in there,

  220. your peace will rest upon him.

  221. But if not, it'll return to you.

  222. Peace resting upon someone

  223. is not that you walked in

  224. and suddenly they were transformed.

  225. It was that the kingdom of God,

  226. that they're there to proclaim

  227. the nearness of the kingdom of God,

  228. is being taken by them

  229. and embraced in the heart.

  230. They're embracing the kingdom of God.

  231. And people who don't embrace the kingdom of God

  232. will reject them.

  233. And he tells them,

  234. you're going to be rejected.

  235. It's going to happen.

  236. My sovereignty works in both of these ways.

  237. In seven and eight,

  238. he talks about eating whatever is set before you.

  239. The dietary restrictions of the Jews

  240. is pretty significant.

  241. These people didn't eat certain things,

  242. but they were ministering in an area

  243. where you had Gentiles and Jews around each other.

  244. It was hard to tell where you were going to go

  245. as you walked into different houses

  246. and different towns.

  247. And Jesus says something

  248. that was probably a little bit mind-blowing

  249. to some of them.

  250. Whatever they put in front of you,

  251. eat it.

  252. The fulfillment is happening in front of them.

  253. The fulfillment of the Old Testament law.

  254. Foods are clean.

  255. You can eat it.

  256. You're on a bigger mission right now.

  257. You're on a mission to bring my kingdom

  258. near to these people.

  259. So they were to pray.

  260. They were to go.

  261. The third part under instructions.

  262. They were to declare.

  263. Look at verse nine.

  264. Healing.

  265. Healing.

  266. Heal the sick in it.

  267. And say to them,

  268. the kingdom of God has come near to you.

  269. Healing.

  270. It's a big deal.

  271. We don't do that a lot nowadays.

  272. We pray for it.

  273. We've seen it miraculously happen recently

  274. in our congregation with Michael Calhoun.

  275. But generally speaking,

  276. there's not a lot of average people

  277. walking up to somebody and healing them.

  278. It was the same back then.

  279. And here you have average people coming

  280. and healing people in the name of Jesus

  281. and declaring to them through that,

  282. the kingdom has come near to you.

  283. This is a hard passage to relate to you and I

  284. because most of these things just aren't us.

  285. We're not granted similar authority

  286. as is granted here to these

  287. or to the apostles in chapter nine

  288. or to what we see in Acts,

  289. Luke-Acts being one volume.

  290. That's not what we're called to do.

  291. But what are we called to do?

  292. What's the difference between the two things?

  293. Well, I can assure you these instructions

  294. still make absolute sense to us.

  295. Pray.

  296. Do you care to pray?

  297. What do we pray for?

  298. Parents, do you teach your children to pray

  299. and that it's important?

  300. Empty nesters, now that your kids are out of the house,

  301. do you still pray?

  302. Husbands and wives, do you pray together?

  303. Singles, do you pray?

  304. That's your first question.

  305. Do we even do it?

  306. Then the question is for what?

  307. What are we praying for?

  308. Kingdom nearness is a big deal to Jesus in this section

  309. and hopefully it becomes a bigger deal to us

  310. throughout the morning right now.

  311. But are you praying for you

  312. and for things that are motivated by you?

  313. Or are we praying for things that are brought on our hearts

  314. by the message of Jesus Christ?

  315. The urgency of the end is now.

  316. And you don't have to be someone suffering from a terminal disease

  317. to understand that and be convicted by that.

  318. And to Jesus, he's drawing our attention to that.

  319. The end, the kingdom being big.

  320. Colossians tells us that Jesus is bringing

  321. and reconciling all things to the Father.

  322. That's what he's doing through everything that we do.

  323. Pray to that end.

  324. What does it look like for you to participate in that?

  325. What does it look like for your children to participate in that?

  326. How do we think bigger than ourselves

  327. about the work that Christ is doing?

  328. But there's an obvious thing here

  329. that the go is less go for most of us.

  330. Some of us do go to other places,

  331. like hungry for nine years and serve with your family.

  332. But a lot of us are just going to be called to work tomorrow morning.

  333. Or going to be called to lunch with some friends,

  334. maybe to small group tonight.

  335. The go for most of us has already happened.

  336. We're already living the go all the time.

  337. How do we pray that the go we've been called to

  338. would impact the kingdom?

  339. What does that look like for me and for you

  340. on a day-to-day basis?

  341. I get paid to do it.

  342. But it's still hard.

  343. I don't remember to pray for these things.

  344. I have day-to-day activities.

  345. I have things, people I need to meet.

  346. Boxes I need to check off on a list.

  347. I'm the one being paid for kingdom activity.

  348. We're all called to it, though.

  349. And we're sent and we're already going.

  350. What are we doing in those moments?

  351. What does it look like for you to declare peace at work

  352. with your boss who's a jerk,

  353. with a fellow employee who's being put down,

  354. at home with relatives who don't get along

  355. and who actively seem to be trying to destroy your family?

  356. With siblings who seem to have everything in their lives

  357. set against you smiling ever?

  358. We go from small places.

  359. We go to big places.

  360. And God has sent us all out for a reason,

  361. to declare his kingdom,

  362. to be a taste of the kingdom of God

  363. in the world that we live in.

  364. And that's the declare.

  365. Is declare every time you're in your lunch break

  366. walking to someone else and saying,

  367. here's a tract, let's talk.

  368. I'm not sure.

  369. I'm not sure that's the most winsome way to go

  370. about declaring the kingdom of God.

  371. I think it's actually more in the way we go.

  372. And so we have instructions.

  373. They're pretty simple.

  374. Pray, go, declare.

  375. Be a taste of the kingdom.

  376. Be conscious of the people around you.

  377. Souls around you.

  378. Because the warnings are stark.

  379. And let's go into those now.

  380. The warnings in chapter 10.

  381. We'll be reading verses 10 through 20.

  382. Whenever you enter a town and they do not receive you,

  383. go into its streets and say,

  384. and this isn't randomly running up and down streets.

  385. It's go to the main part of town and say,

  386. even the dust of your town that clings to our feet,

  387. we wipe off against you.

  388. Nevertheless, know this,

  389. that the kingdom of God has come near.

  390. That's bad news now.

  391. The kingdom of God has come near and you've rejected us.

  392. You've rejected it.

  393. I tell you,

  394. it'll be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town.

  395. Woe to you,

  396. Shorzene.

  397. Woe to you,

  398. Bethsaida.

  399. For if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon,

  400. they would have repented long ago sitting in sackcloth and ashes.

  401. But it will be more bearable in the judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you.

  402. And you,

  403. Capernaum,

  404. will be exalted to heaven?

  405. No,

  406. I don't think so.

  407. You'll be brought down to Hades.

  408. The one who hears you,

  409. hears me.

  410. And the one who rejects you,

  411. rejects me.

  412. And the one who rejects me,

  413. rejects him who sent me.

  414. And the 72 went out.

  415. And the 72 returned with joy saying,

  416. Lord,

  417. even the demons are subject to us in your name.

  418. And he said to them,

  419. I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.

  420. Behold,

  421. I've given you authority to tread on serpents and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy.

  422. And nothing shall hurt you.

  423. Nevertheless,

  424. don't rejoice in this,

  425. that the spirits are subject to you.

  426. But rejoice that your names are written in heaven.

  427. And this section gives a stark warning to two groups of people.

  428. The first group being the unrepentant.

  429. And the second group being the repentant.

  430. To the unrepentant,

  431. let's define repentance.

  432. Because I think a lot of times we conflate repentance with confession.

  433. We're happy to get together with our accountability group,

  434. or with another group of people,

  435. or something of the sort,

  436. and say,

  437. hey,

  438. I did this thing.

  439. And most of those guys or girls love you,

  440. and they say,

  441. I'm so sorry.

  442. Hey,

  443. I'm thinking about the chicken salad.

  444. Have you had that here?

  445. Is that good?

  446. We throw it out into the ether as though telling one another that we're sinners is going to be the end of it.

  447. Repentance is something different than just naming the fact that you've sinned.

  448. Repentance is actually actively striving against that sin.

  449. Primarily by turning to Christ.

  450. Your sin is not supposed to leave you with guilt and wallowing in shame.

  451. It's supposed to turn you towards your Savior.

  452. That's the primary action.

  453. I think Westminster Confession is helpful with this because it says,

  454. oh, by the way,

  455. saying that you've turned towards the Savior should probably be followed up by you actively doing that.

  456. You've been given grace to do that.

  457. Repentance is turning from your sin to Christ

  458. and then striving by all the grace given to you

  459. to continue on that path away from sin.

  460. So to the unrepentant,

  461. it's not embracing kingdom nearness in the heart.

  462. And it's a difficult thing to see here

  463. because we all know

  464. what we think of when we hear some of these names.

  465. But the declaration has been made.

  466. They entered the town and they weren't received.

  467. So they said,

  468. even the dust of your town that clings to our feet,

  469. we wipe off against you.

  470. Nevertheless,

  471. know this,

  472. that the kingdom of God has come near.

  473. They came near.

  474. It came near.

  475. And they were rejected.

  476. Then he goes through all the cities.

  477. I'll tell you,

  478. it'll be more bearable on that day

  479. for Sodom than for that town.

  480. That town is a random town.

  481. He's just giving them instructions as to what they're to do

  482. when they are rejected.

  483. But he's talking about in this whole passage,

  484. hospitality.

  485. You're entering the town.

  486. You declare the kingdom.

  487. A son of peace will accept you.

  488. A town of peace will accept you.

  489. They will show hospitality to the kingdom of God.

  490. And then he compares it to Sodom.

  491. And I think most of us,

  492. when we think of Sodom,

  493. think of one particular sin.

  494. And this passage is laying out relatively clearly

  495. that that sin is only the tip of the iceberg of the problem.

  496. Because Sodom actually didn't embrace the kingdom

  497. as it came near.

  498. And that's the bigger problem.

  499. But the comparison here is not necessarily

  500. apples to apples

  501. because Sodom is not a city

  502. who knew the nearness of King Jesus

  503. and his followers

  504. who had been authoritatively sent forth.

  505. We see the other comparisons.

  506. Shorazin and Bethsaida.

  507. Mighty works have been done in each of you.

  508. These are Galilean towns

  509. that Jesus and his disciples have been in

  510. doing this crazy healing stuff.

  511. Preaching the kingdom.

  512. Casting demons out.

  513. Stuff you just don't see every day.

  514. And those towns said,

  515. no.

  516. We don't want any part of this.

  517. And then he goes to the big one, Capernaum.

  518. And you, Capernaum,

  519. will you be exalted to heaven?

  520. You'll be brought down to Hades.

  521. That is not something you want Jesus saying about you

  522. because he's serious.

  523. This isn't Jesus telling you to go to hell.

  524. This is Jesus declaring

  525. that rejection of the kingdom

  526. results in your judgment.

  527. The warnings are stark

  528. because these people have been taught

  529. the promises of God

  530. through their religion for a long time.

  531. And then the fulfillment

  532. of all of the Old Testament prophecies

  533. came to them.

  534. And they pushed it away.

  535. It's funny.

  536. As I was looking at this,

  537. it's not funny,

  538. but as I was looking at this,

  539. I couldn't help but think to myself,

  540. man, does that sound like us.

  541. Man, does that sound like people

  542. I know in Huntsville.

  543. It's in the air here.

  544. We've all,

  545. there are churches everywhere.

  546. We have giant,

  547. massive churches on this street,

  548. right down the street,

  549. over on Whitesburg.

  550. There's gonna be another one

  551. put right across the street from us.

  552. The gospel is here

  553. and being taught

  554. and teached in many different ways

  555. and proclaimed around our city.

  556. And yet,

  557. it makes me wonder,

  558. has it ever been embraced

  559. from the heart?

  560. For all of you tennis fans,

  561. Federer won in straight sets this morning.

  562. For all of you who aren't tennis fans,

  563. you may have heard of another guy

  564. called Bernard Tomic.

  565. He is an Australian player

  566. who was actually born,

  567. I think,

  568. in Croatia

  569. and now lives in Monaco.

  570. I don't know how these things work.

  571. His name is Bernard Tomic.

  572. And after losing

  573. in the first round of Wimbledon

  574. on the 6th,

  575. July 6th,

  576. this was the quote

  577. he gave to a reporter afterwards.

  578. This might sound familiar

  579. after you hear it.

  580. I couldn't care less

  581. if I make a fourth round

  582. at the US Open

  583. or if I lose in the first round.

  584. To me,

  585. everything is the same.

  586. I'm going to play another 10 years

  587. and I know that after my career,

  588. I won't have to work again.

  589. He's 24.

  590. Even with losing

  591. in the first round at Wimbledon,

  592. he's ranked 59th in the world.

  593. He was as high as 17th last year.

  594. And catch this,

  595. playing tennis,

  596. he's won $5,142,239

  597. in career prize money

  598. by being 168 and 153.

  599. Average 500 tennis player,

  600. 59th in the world.

  601. Don't get me wrong,

  602. that's incredible

  603. as far as skill level goes.

  604. But this guy is not playing

  605. from a passionate place

  606. with tennis.

  607. He has a skill

  608. that he's honed

  609. and he's working

  610. from the outside in.

  611. He's been making,

  612. I think he turned pro

  613. in 2008,

  614. nine years,

  615. $5 million,

  616. he's been making

  617. about $570,000 a year.

  618. It's an okay living,

  619. playing a game,

  620. right?

  621. He's got sponsors.

  622. Well, he lost one sponsor

  623. after the statement.

  624. But he has sponsors

  625. that pay him.

  626. Idolatry takes many forms

  627. for us.

  628. But sin is a result

  629. primarily of a binary choice.

  630. You heard Ron talk about earlier

  631. and I'm going to talk about now.

  632. And the binary choice is this.

  633. Are you motivated by Christ?

  634. Or are you motivated by yourself?

  635. What motivates you?

  636. To put it in a different way,

  637. are you motivated

  638. from the outside in?

  639. Or are you motivated

  640. from the inside out?

  641. And I think that's

  642. an important question

  643. for people like us

  644. who have been raised in

  645. and around the church

  646. and the gospel

  647. to ask ourselves.

  648. Because a lot of us

  649. have no problem

  650. going to church

  651. on Sunday morning,

  652. 12 or 13 times a year.

  653. A lot of us

  654. have no problem

  655. being members of a church

  656. because we're in the south

  657. and if you're not a member

  658. of the church,

  659. that's a problem.

  660. We don't have a problem

  661. passing the peace of Christ

  662. on to each other

  663. because we don't.

  664. We send our kids

  665. to Christian school,

  666. we do all of the right things

  667. that we're supposed to do

  668. because that's how

  669. we've been brought up.

  670. Nothing wrong

  671. with being brought up

  672. that way, by the way.

  673. We're charged

  674. to bring our children up

  675. in the nurture

  676. and admonition of the Lord.

  677. But at some point

  678. it gets to a reality line

  679. where we become consumers

  680. of the Christian faith

  681. as opposed to those

  682. who are driven by

  683. the reality of the Holy Spirit

  684. in our hearts

  685. and in our lives.

  686. This thing of

  687. wiping the dust

  688. off of your feet

  689. is not a pre-cross thing.

  690. This is the same thing

  691. that happens to

  692. Paul and Barnabas

  693. at the end of Acts 13.

  694. They have a successful time

  695. in the synagogues

  696. in Antioch

  697. and the people

  698. want to hear more

  699. and they want to hear more

  700. and you know what happens.

  701. They're so on fire

  702. for the gospel

  703. that the Jewish people

  704. who run the town

  705. work up

  706. a lot of people

  707. against Paul

  708. who are also Jewish people

  709. and they go to kick

  710. Paul and Barnabas

  711. out of the town.

  712. And the same phrase appears.

  713. Paul and Barnabas

  714. dusted their feet off

  715. and said,

  716. we tried to come to you

  717. with the gospel

  718. and now we're going

  719. to those who don't know it

  720. because you've not embraced

  721. the kingdom from the heart.

  722. and we do other things

  723. like think that

  724. if we get rid of a petty sin

  725. or if we live

  726. just in a certain way

  727. that that will also show people

  728. that we're better than them.

  729. I think that's where

  730. the idea of Sodom

  731. comes in as a very

  732. poignant thing for us

  733. because in our minds

  734. the one sin we associate

  735. with Sodom

  736. is reprobate in our eyes

  737. and we would never

  738. participate in it

  739. and we would never

  740. condone people who do

  741. and we are better

  742. than them.

  743. And it doesn't stop there.

  744. It goes across the board

  745. with whatever your thing is.

  746. I don't smoke.

  747. I don't chew.

  748. I don't go with girls who do.

  749. Whatever the little thing is

  750. that you're better

  751. than somebody else about

  752. is an idol

  753. that you are trying

  754. to improve yourself on.

  755. I have them.

  756. I guarantee you,

  757. you have them.

  758. And the question is not

  759. do they exist inside of us?

  760. The question is

  761. what motivates you

  762. towards that?

  763. Is it because you need

  764. to look good

  765. from the outside

  766. or is it because

  767. Christ in you

  768. is actively pushing you

  769. against sin

  770. which should result

  771. in some humility

  772. when dealing with

  773. a situation like that?

  774. haughtiness from the outside

  775. is a completely

  776. different thing.

  777. And if you walk

  778. into church

  779. every Sunday

  780. or every other Sunday

  781. or whenever you can get here

  782. woe be unto you

  783. if you're not embracing

  784. the kingdom from the heart.

  785. if you hear the message

  786. over and over again

  787. and your heart is cold

  788. and your heart is stone

  789. and you're not turned

  790. to the one

  791. who came to save you

  792. it's terrible news.

  793. It is judgment.

  794. That's the end result.

  795. people come flying

  796. down that hill

  797. all the time.

  798. Terrible results

  799. can happen like that.

  800. And all of a sudden

  801. you're there

  802. to what Jesus is intense

  803. and fighting for

  804. and equipping his people

  805. for eternity.

  806. Because you can fool me

  807. and you can fool

  808. the people around you.

  809. You can fool

  810. the people at work

  811. who think you're pious

  812. and that you're good.

  813. But if your motivation

  814. is from the outside in

  815. you have no place

  816. with our Heavenly Father.

  817. And that's a terrifying

  818. terrifying thought.

  819. And you're not left there.

  820. you're not meant

  821. to be left there.

  822. The fact that you're here

  823. today

  824. hearing a message

  825. about the gospel

  826. of Jesus Christ

  827. is proof of God's love

  828. for you.

  829. It's proof of his

  830. pursuit of you.

  831. It's proof of him

  832. saying one more time

  833. this is serious.

  834. The end result

  835. is very,

  836. very serious.

  837. I love you.

  838. Embrace

  839. my kingdom.

  840. Come to me

  841. the way

  842. that I am coming

  843. towards you

  844. because I want you

  845. to be there.

  846. For the repentant

  847. this says a lot of

  848. really good things.

  849. I thought it was neat

  850. to read

  851. some of the stuff

  852. that people were able

  853. to say to him

  854. when they came back.

  855. Lord,

  856. even the demons

  857. are subject to us

  858. in your name.

  859. And then Jesus says

  860. something that's not

  861. a remembrance,

  862. it's something of

  863. a prophetic utterance

  864. or a vision.

  865. He says,

  866. this is happening.

  867. You went out

  868. in my name

  869. and Satan

  870. is falling

  871. from heaven.

  872. It's happening now.

  873. The fulfillment

  874. is now.

  875. I am conquering death.

  876. I am conquering

  877. all of this

  878. and you're a part

  879. of it.

  880. And then he reaches

  881. back into some

  882. thoughts of the

  883. Old Testament.

  884. I gave you authority

  885. to tread on scorpions

  886. and serpents.

  887. That's something

  888. back from

  889. Deuteronomy 9

  890. and even if you

  891. think about serpents

  892. that can take you

  893. all the way back

  894. to what is said

  895. in Genesis 3.15

  896. the proto-evangelium

  897. the first time

  898. that God says

  899. I'm not through

  900. with you

  901. I'm going to crush

  902. the head of the serpent

  903. and I'm going to

  904. chase you down.

  905. Is he chasing you

  906. down today?

  907. Hear it.

  908. This is good news.

  909. It's the beginning

  910. of the end

  911. for Satan

  912. but then the best news

  913. comes there

  914. in verse 20.

  915. Nevertheless,

  916. don't rejoice in this.

  917. the power of the spirits

  918. are subject to you

  919. but rejoice

  920. in the fact

  921. that your names

  922. are written in heaven.

  923. I've equipped you

  924. to fight

  925. but the battle's

  926. won for you.

  927. You're there.

  928. In Luther's

  929. commentary on Romans

  930. in the preface

  931. he says

  932. faith is a living

  933. daring confidence

  934. on God's grace

  935. so sure and certain

  936. that a man

  937. would stake

  938. his life

  939. on it

  940. a thousand times.

  941. This confidence

  942. in God's grace

  943. and knowledge

  944. of it

  945. makes men

  946. glad and bold

  947. and happy

  948. in dealing with God

  949. and all of his creatures

  950. and this is the work

  951. of the Holy Ghost

  952. in faith.

  953. Hence,

  954. a man is ready

  955. and glad

  956. without compulsion

  957. to do good

  958. to everyone

  959. and to serve everyone

  960. to suffer everything

  961. in love

  962. and praise God

  963. who has shown him

  964. this grace

  965. and thus

  966. it's impossible

  967. to separate works

  968. from faith

  969. quite as impossible

  970. as to separate

  971. heat and light

  972. from fire.

  973. And so the same

  974. question is posed

  975. to us who are repentant

  976. what motivates us?

  977. Is it coming

  978. outside in

  979. or inside out?

  980. It's more of a question

  981. of identity

  982. if you're repentant

  983. than it is of anything else.

  984. What about contentment?

  985. What does that look like?

  986. We fight for a place

  987. America man

  988. this is a great place

  989. to live

  990. Huntsville

  991. a great place

  992. in America

  993. to live.

  994. you can get content

  995. very quickly

  996. and the things

  997. we talked about

  998. and the instructions

  999. leave us quickly

  1000. because life

  1001. is kind of okay.

  1002. My wife and I

  1003. get along

  1004. and our kids

  1005. are insane

  1006. but they're

  1007. generally okay.

  1008. I can be content

  1009. in that.

  1010. The passion

  1011. for my neighbors

  1012. and the passion

  1013. for my work

  1014. and the passion

  1015. for everything

  1016. God has set

  1017. before me

  1018. in terms of go

  1019. leaves

1020. because I can be content

  1021. in what I have.

  1022. And Jesus

1023. is throwing in our faces

  1024. once again

  1025. no judgment

  1026. is awaiting souls.

  1027. Don't be content

  1028. there.

  1029. And then there's

  1030. the idolatry

  1031. of fear

  1032. the special

  1033. dispensations

  1034. that we see

  1035. given to these

  1036. followers

  1037. and some in Acts

  1038. are not normative

  1039. for us

  1040. and so when things

  1041. work against us

  1042. we operate

  1043. from a place

  1044. of fear.

  1045. And the reality

  1046. of the gospel

  1047. of grace

  1048. is that our names

  1049. are written

  1050. in heaven

  1051. and when things

  1052. come at us

  1053. on earth

  1054. we've been given

  1055. the Holy Spirit

  1056. and Christ

1057. to stand in the gap

  1058. to fight against them.

  1059. Our sins

  1060. are not inevitable.

  1061. Don't hear me

  1062. saying that you're

  1063. perfect.

  1064. That's not what

  1065. I just said.

  1066. I just said

  1067. your sin

  1068. is not

  1069. inevitable.

  1070. You can fight

  1071. against it.

  1072. We're not slaves

  1073. to sin anymore.

  1074. We've been given

  1075. the power

  1076. of Christ

  1077. living within us.

  1078. Do you trust that?

  1079. Do I trust that?

  1080. Listen to me.

  1081. Your name

  1082. is written

  1083. in heaven.

  1084. Fear

  1085. does not

  1086. have to be

  1087. the answer.

  1088. Hard situations

  1089. come on us

  1090. all the time

  1091. and our faithful

  1092. God

  1093. the same one

  1094. who pursued us

  1095. and guarantees

  1096. that our names

  1097. are written in heaven

  1098. is ready to stand

  1099. in that gap

  1100. for us.

  1101. Fighting our battles

  1102. for us

  1103. so that we may

  1104. be his righteousness.

  1105. That's a great

  1106. thing to be able

  1107. to trust in.

  1108. We make hard

  1109. decisions all

  1110. the time

  1111. and we don't

  1112. know what the

  1113. outcome is going

  1114. to be

  1115. so we get

  1116. paralyzed

  1117. or we run

  1118. away from it.

  1119. And then the rest

  1120. and I'll go

  1121. through this quickly

  1122. I'm sorry

  1123. I've taken up

  1124. so much of your

  1125. time.

  1126. I'm not sorry

1127. I just had to say

  1128. that.

  1129. Luke 10

  1130. 20 through 24

  1131. it starts

  1132. with that

  1133. nevertheless

  1134. do not rejoice

  1135. in this

  1136. that the spirits

  1137. are subjected

  1138. to you

  1139. but rejoice

  1140. that your names

  1141. are written

  1142. in heaven.

  1143. Then the Holy

  1144. Spirit comes

  1145. into Jesus

  1146. and in that

  1147. same hour

  1148. he rejoiced

  1149. in the Holy

  1150. Spirit

  1151. and said

  1152. I thank you

  1153. Father

  1154. Lord of heaven

  1155. and earth

  1156. that you've

  1157. hidden these

  1158. things from

  1159. the wise

  1160. in understanding

  1161. and revealed

  1162. them to little

  1163. children.

  1164. Then the intimacy

  1165. shows again

  1166. he repeats

  1167. his father's

  1168. name

  1169. yes Father

  1170. for such

  1171. was your

  1172. gracious

  1173. will

  1174. all things

  1175. have been

  1176. handed over

  1177. to me

  1178. by my

  1179. father

  1180. and no one

  1181. knows who

  1182. the son

  1183. is except

  1184. the father

  1185. who the

  1186. father is

  1187. except the

  1188. son

  1189. and anyone

  1190. to whom

  1191. the son

  1192. chooses

  1193. to reveal

  1194. himself

  1195. and then

  1196. turning to

  1197. his disciples

  1198. he says

  1199. privately

  1200. blessed are

  1201. the eyes

  1202. that see

  1203. what you

  1204. see

  1205. for I

  1206. tell you

  1207. that many

  1208. prophets

  1209. and kings

  1210. desired to

  1211. see what

  1212. you see

  1213. and didn't

  1214. see it

  1215. and to

  1216. hear what

  1217. you hear

  1218. but they

  1219. never heard

  1220. it

  1221. I'm going

  1222. to reiterate

  1223. from verse

  1224. 20

  1225. it says

  1226. rejoice

  1227. that your

  1228. names are

  1229. written in

  1230. heaven

  1231. that is a

  1232. word

  1233. rejoice

  1234. that can

  1235. read

  1236. rejoicing

  1237. constantly

  1238. it's a

  1239. reminder to

  1240. you all

  1241. the time

  1242. your names

  1243. are written

  1244. in heaven

  1245. rejoice in

  1246. it

  1247. live in

  1248. it

  1249. verse 22

  1250. what does

  1251. it look

  1252. like

  1253. to rest

  1254. in the

  1255. idea

  1256. that

  1257. you're a

  1258. child of

  1259. the father

  1260. you're a

  1261. beloved

  1262. child of

  1263. father

  1264. god

  1265. that's

  1266. who you

  1267. are

  1268. verse 22

  1269. rest in

  1270. the sovereign

  1271. grace of

  1272. the father

  1273. I want to

  1274. be careful

  1275. to those

  1276. of you

  1277. who may

  1278. not be

  1279. feeling

  1280. like

  1281. you're

  1282. embracing

  1283. the spirit

  1284. from the

  1285. heart

  1286. the idea

  1287. of God's

  1288. sovereignty

  1289. is a

  1290. God

  1291. concept

  1292. that our

  1293. minds

  1294. can't

  1295. understand

  1296. we just

  1297. see it

  1298. revealed to

  1299. us in

  1300. places like

  1301. this in

  1302. scripture

  1303. if you

  1304. if you

  1305. actively choose

  1306. against the

  1307. kingdom

  1308. that is

  1309. not

  1310. an

  1311. indemnifying

  1312. thing

  1313. against

  1314. God's

  1315. sovereignty

  1316. that is

  1317. against

  1318. us

  1319. as

  1320. individuals

  1321. so the

  1322. question is

  1323. never has

  1324. God

  1325. chosen you

  1326. the question

  1327. is a very

  1328. simple one

  1329. actually do

  1330. you believe

  1331. do you

  1332. embrace the

  1333. kingdom from

  1334. the heart

  1335. the answer

  1336. is yes or

  1337. no and

  1338. then the

  1339. explanation

  1340. gets more

  1341. complicated

  1342. but it's as

  1343. simple as

  1344. starting there

  1345. do you

  1346. believe

  1347. have you

  1348. embraced the

  1349. kingdom

  1350. I pray that

  1351. you will

  1352. and then we

  1353. see what time

  1354. is it in

  1355. history

  1356. Jesus pulls

  1357. the disciples

  1358. aside and

  1359. says guys

  1360. you wouldn't

  1361. believe the

  1362. awesome folks

  1363. who came

  1364. before you

  1365. that didn't

  1366. get to see

  1367. this

  1368. you wouldn't

  1369. believe that

  1370. so after

  1371. six hours

  1372. of fighting

  1373. Captain

  1374. Swenson

  1375. was still

  1376. alive

  1377. but three

  1378. of those

  1379. marines

  1380. the Navy

  1381. corpsmen

  1382. his good

  1383. friend who

  1384. was the

  1385. other army

  1386. guy who

  1387. was supervising

  1388. and advising

  1389. the Afghan

  1390. soldiers

  1391. eight of

  1392. those Afghan

  1393. soldiers

  1394. had all

  1395. died and

  1396. the firefighting

  1397. had ended

  1398. and they'd

  1399. been pulled

  1400. out

  1401. and there's

  1402. a really

  1403. interesting

  1404. video which

  1405. was hard

  1406. to watch

  1407. but it

  1408. was one

  1409. of the

  1410. medics

  1411. that came

  1412. in on a

  1413. medevac

  1414. had a

  1415. GoPro on

  1416. his helmet

  1417. and showed

  1418. some of the

  1419. action of

  1420. him going

  1421. in and

  1422. pulling people

  1423. out

  1424. and then

  1425. the most

  1426. dominant

  1427. scene to

  1428. me is

  1429. his partner

  1430. his first

  1431. he was

  1432. I'm sorry

  1433. I don't

  1434. remember his

  1435. name but

  1436. at any rate

  1437. he picked

  1438. him up and

  1439. carried him

  1440. and set

  1441. him on the

  1442. gurney

  1443. in the

  1444. helicopter

  1445. and just

  1446. gave him

  1447. a sweet

  1448. kiss on

  1449. the cheek

  1450. and that

  1451. man succumbed

  1452. to his

  1453. injuries

  1454. a couple

  1455. months later

  1456. leaving a

  1457. wife and

  1458. three kids

  1459. I believe

  1460. behind

  1461. he was

  1462. set to

  1463. retire

  1464. a month

  1465. after that

  1466. it's

  1467. amazing

  1468. to think

  1469. of the

  1470. heroic

  1471. nature

  1472. of Captain

  1473. Swenson

  1474. as he went

  1475. through

  1476. it's no

  1477. wonder he

  1478. received

  1479. the medal

  1480. of honor

  1481. we see

  1482. that type

  1483. of love

  1484. and that

  1485. type

  1486. of resolve

  1487. out of

  1488. a man

  1489. and this

  1490. story is

  1491. actually about

  1492. the love

  1493. and the

  1494. resolve

  1495. of the

  1496. God

  1497. man

  1498. who came

  1499. for you

  1500. who died

  1501. for you

  1502. who rose

  1503. again for

  1504. you so

  1505. that your

  1506. name might

  1507. be written

  1508. in heaven

  1509. so that as

  1510. you approach

  1511. the task

  1512. of going

  1513. through the

  1514. instructions

  1515. of praying

  1516. and going

  1517. and declaring

  1518. that's coming

  1519. from actually

  1520. a place

  1521. of rest

  1522. resting

  1523. in the

  1524. reality

  1525. of who

  1526. you

  1527. are

  1528. be a

  1529. child

  1530. of God

  1531. and I

  1532. pray that

  1533. all of us

  1534. when we

  1535. go out

  1536. of here

  1537. today

  1538. can be

  1539. willing

  1540. to

  1541. declare

  1542. that the

  1543. kingdom

  1544. is near

  1545. that it's

  1546. come near

  1547. and that

  1548. Jesus is

  1549. coming

  1550. again

  1551. pray with

  1552. me

  1553. and let's

  1554. finish

  1555. up

  1556. father

  1557. god

  1558. we are

  1559. grateful

  1560. and humbled

  1561. by your

  1562. words

  1563. I pray

  1564. that you

  1565. would bless

  1566. the going

  1567. forth of

  1568. all of us

  1569. as we

  1570. leave here

  1571. today

  1572. troubled

  1573. and

  1574. confident

  1575. in the

  1576. love that

  1577. you've

  1578. shown us

  1579. I pray

  1580. that we

  1581. would

  1582. embrace

  1583. your

  1584. kingdom

  1585. from the

  1586. heart

  1587. and truly

  1588. move to

  1589. a place

  1590. of being

  1591. motivated

  1592. from the

  1593. inside

  1594. by Christ

  1595. our

  1596. great

  1597. king

  1598. in whose

  1599. name

  1600. we

  1601. pray

  1602. amen
