  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. To be a Christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing.

  5. Martin Luther.

  6. Though in its beginnings prayer is so simple that the feeble child can pray,

  7. yet it is at the same time the highest and holiest work to which man can rise.

  8. It is the very essence of true religion, the channel of all blessings, the secret of power and life.

  9. Andrew Murray.

  10. What a man is alone on his knees before God, that he is and no more.

  11. Robert Murray McShane.

  12. Wow.

  13. Prayer is kind of important, right?

  14. Maybe you heard that.

  15. Maybe you thought it's supposed to be.

  16. Our church has said that prayer is one of our core commitments.

  17. It's one of those handful of things that we have said must shape how we do everything that we do.

  18. We recognize our deep dependence and need for prayer.

  19. As our session has talked about these core commitments, the things we want to increasingly define us,

  20. one of the things we've acknowledged also is that this particular one about dependence and prayer

  21. is one that doesn't currently define us nearly as much as we wish it did.

  22. I know it's a struggle for the pastor.

  23. I'm so much like Martha from last week's sermon, the story of Mary and Martha.

  24. I so quickly find my significance in things that I do, how much I'm able to accomplish what other people can see.

  25. And so prayer can feel inefficient, unimpressive, and therefore secondary a lot of times.

  26. We all live in a fast-paced, achievement-oriented culture where slowing down to talk with God is not often rewarded.

  27. Independence is praised more than dependence, right?

  28. So as we come to a place in God's Word in our study through Luke, where Jesus teaches us about prayer,

  29. we decided just to slow down for a few weeks, to talk about this together.

  30. We'll ask as His disciples ask Him here in this passage,

  31. Lord, teach us to pray.

  32. I've been studying these past few weeks, and I'm more and more convinced that I'm learning right along with you,

  33. over and over.

  34. You're probably going to notice that this morning in the unusually high number of other people that I quote,

  35. which could get a little bit annoying for you.

  36. But it's so good, y'all.

  37. The things that God's been teaching me over the last few months about a relationship with Him in prayer,

  38. I'm so eager to be able to share some of that with you as He continues teaching me.

  39. I'm really looking forward to how Jesus will teach us and transform us through this.

  40. So let's read this familiar passage and then ask for His help.

  41. Luke 11 at verse 1.

  42. This is God's Word.

  43. Now Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when He finished,

  44. one of His disciples said to Him,

  45. Lord, teach us to pray as John taught his disciples.

  46. And He said to them,

  47. When you pray, say,

  48. Father,

  49. hallowed be Your name.

  50. Your kingdom come.

  51. Give us each day our daily bread,

  52. and forgive us our sins,

  53. for we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us.

  54. And lead us not into temptation.

  55. The grass withers,

  56. the flowers fade,

  57. these words of our God will stand forever.

  58. Let's ask for His help as we look to them.

  59. Jesus, teach me to pray.

  60. Teach them to pray.

  61. Teach us to pray.

  62. We ask it in Your name.

  63. Amen.

  64. Notice briefly before we look at the famous words of the Lord's Prayer

  65. that we've prayed already this morning,

  66. that Jesus Himself is praying yet again

  67. as we turn the page to chapter 11.

  68. And it's actually His activity of praying

  69. that prompts His disciples' request, isn't it?

  70. Now, think about that request for a minute.

  71. Lord, teach us to pray.

  72. Why teach us to pray?

  73. Why not teach us to preach

  74. the way You do so incredibly well, Jesus?

  75. Teach us to perform miraculous signs and wonders

  76. as You do,

  77. and healing and other things.

  78. Teach us to lead so powerfully as You do, Jesus.

  79. Why teach us to pray?

  80. I think Jesus' disciples must have seen

  81. how vital prayer was to who Jesus was.

  82. They've been around Him.

  83. They've seen what drives Him.

  84. They've seen what fuels everything that He does.

  85. And Jesus praying is so often connected

  86. in the Gospel of Luke with His great deeds,

  87. with the things that He does.

  88. He's constantly praying as He goes into them.

  89. And the disciples have watched that.

  90. And they come to Him with a request,

  91. not for information on prayer,

  92. but rather, Lord, teach us to pray.

  93. Jesus gets that request.

  94. Where's He gonna go with that?

  95. Where will He take them to start?

  96. He loves prayer, right?

  97. He does it all the time.

  98. What's He gonna tell someone first?

  99. When to pray?

  100. Where to go to pray?

  101. No.

  102. Jesus starts with the identity

  103. of the person you're talking with in prayer.

  104. My favorite book on prayer,

  105. which is available in the guest center this morning,

  106. if you want a copy,

  107. is this one,

  108. A Praying Life by Paul Miller.

  109. It's a really helpful book.

  110. It's rich theologically and biblically.

  111. It's also very practical

  112. and gives you tips on how to develop

  113. a relationship with God

  114. where prayer is a natural part of life.

  115. But in this book,

  116. Miller reminds us

  117. that fixing your prayer life

  118. is not something that you do

  119. by focusing on prayer itself,

  120. but rather by focusing on the God

  121. to whom you pray.

  122. He gives this analogy

  123. I've shared with you before

  124. that focusing on prayer

  125. is like driving

  126. and looking at the windshield

  127. rather than looking through the windshield

  128. to the road

  129. and the people where you are driving.

  130. Trying to address prayer

  131. by focusing on prayer

  132. is like driving

  133. while staring only at the windshield.

  134. You're never going to get anywhere.

  135. What will motivate us,

  136. what will help our lives of prayer

  137. is knowing and trusting

  138. the person to whom we pray.

  139. That's so important to think about it

  140. in any conversation that you have.

  141. Who you're talking to

  142. is directly connected

  143. to what you're willing to share with them,

  144. what things you might ask of them.

  145. You have to know who they are.

  146. While prayer is in many ways

  147. hard for all of us,

  148. in one sense,

  149. nearly everyone prays.

  150. In the general sense

  151. of speaking to someone

  152. or something beyond yourself,

  153. all sorts of people pray.

  154. Perhaps you have prayed

  155. at some point in your life

  156. or heard someone else pray

  157. to the great being

  158. or to God if you're even there

  159. or can anyone help me.

  160. Certainly to gods of other religions

  161. different from the God of the Bible

  162. and Christianity.

  163. Well, certainly then the content

  164. and the effectiveness of your prayer

  165. hinges on who is hearing your prayer, right?

  166. Who's hearing those words

  167. when you throw them out there?

  168. Who will respond?

  169. And so when Jesus teaches us to pray,

  170. He begins with the identity

  171. of the one we're addressing.

  172. And He says,

  173. when you pray,

  174. say,

  175. Father.

  176. Father.

  177. We're actually going to stop

  178. at this word for today.

  179. I promise we'll move faster next week

  180. beyond the word who.

  181. But you really could stop

  182. at the word Father.

  183. And the rest of the prayer

  184. would fall out

  185. if we stop and contemplate

  186. what it means to be coming to God

  187. and saying,

  188. Father.

  189. Did you know in the Old Testament,

  190. no one ever addressed God as Father?

  191. Father.

  192. God is described there

  193. as a Father,

  194. but no one

  195. would ever address Him

  196. with such a comfortable,

  197. familiar, affectionate term.

  198. No Jew would ever speak

  199. to God that way

  200. except Jesus.

  201. And you turn to the Gospels

  202. and here is Jesus

  203. walking into a context

  204. where you don't call God Father

  205. in every single prayer

  206. in the Gospels

  207. with only one exception.

  208. on the lips of Jesus

  209. calls God Father.

  210. So the disciples have watched Him

  211. and heard Him pray this way.

  212. Undoubtedly,

  213. they've heard

  214. and they've wondered,

  215. what's He doing?

  216. That's not what you say.

  217. But they know

  218. that this is how Jesus,

  219. the one they're beginning to know

  220. is the one and only

  221. Son of God

  222. always begins.

  223. He can do it

  224. and nobody else can.

  225. He says Father.

  226. And now Jesus turns

  227. to His disciples

  228. and says,

  229. you call my Father

  230. your Father.

  231. You call God

  232. the same thing

  233. Jesus does.

  234. You come to Him

  235. in the same way

  236. as you pray.

  237. R.C. Sproul marvels

  238. at what he calls

  239. the unspeakable privilege

  240. privilege of addressing God

  241. in the same terms

  242. of filial familiarity

  243. that Jesus Himself used.

  244. Abba.

  245. Father.

  246. There's so much

  247. wrapped up in that one word.

  248. Relating with God

  249. as our Father

  250. is the essence

  251. of a life of prayer.

  252. It goes beyond

  253. just saying a word.

  254. It's a relationship

  255. where we relate to God

  256. as one who is indeed

  257. our Father

  258. and that's what

  259. a life of prayer

  260. is all about.

  261. Let me unpack

  262. what Jesus' disciples

  263. would be hearing there

  264. just a little bit

  265. and then we'll actually

  266. practice letting this

  267. guide us

  268. and guide our hearts

  269. into prayer.

  270. Two things this morning

  271. that Jesus is teaching us

  272. about praying

  273. in terms of God

  274. being our Father.

  275. and the first is

  276. that God our Father

  277. adopts us

  278. into His family.

  279. That's not just

  280. the heart of prayer.

  281. That's really

  282. the heart of Christianity

  283. if you were wondering

  284. about that this morning.

  285. We talk about Christianity

  286. don't we

  287. as a personal relationship

  288. with God.

  289. We're very prone

  290. to saying that

  291. or hearing that

  292. in the South.

  293. That's not unusual

  294. for you to hear about

  295. having a personal relationship

  296. with God

  297. but I think often

  298. we say that

  299. may not have any idea

  300. what we mean.

  301. What do you mean

  302. a personal relationship

  303. like do you all

  304. even communicate?

  305. Yes.

  306. Yes we should.

  307. Praying to our Father

  308. is at the heart

  309. of having a relationship

  310. with Him.

  311. J.I. Packer

  312. famously wrote

  313. that if you want

  314. to judge

  315. how well a person

  316. understands Christianity

  317. find out how much

  318. He makes

  319. of the thought

  320. of being God's child

  321. and having God

  322. as His Father.

  323. Because see

  324. the family of God

  325. has how many sons?

  326. One.

  327. The family of God

  328. had one son.

  329. The only begotten

  330. Son of God

  331. Jesus Christ.

  332. So for God

  333. to be my Father

  334. He has to adopt me.

  335. He has to bring me

  336. into His family.

  337. And the Jews

  338. know immediately

  339. what that takes.

  340. They're familiar

  341. with this.

  342. Because in the Old Testament

  343. God is called

  344. the Father

  345. of the whole nation

  346. of Israel.

  347. It's referred to

  348. as God's Son.

  349. He is the Father.

  350. And they know

  351. that the context

  352. of that relationship

  353. being discussed

  354. that way

  355. began

  356. when God

  357. calls them

  358. out of slavery

  359. in Egypt

  360. in the Exodus

  361. to freedom

  362. to worship Him

  363. and leads them out

  364. delivers them.

  365. That's what it meant

  366. for God

  367. to be their Father.

  368. When Jesus

  369. tells His disciples

  370. to call God

  371. Father

  372. they hear

  373. that He is

  374. their deliverer.

  375. That the slaves

  376. are called

  377. to be sons

  378. as Peter read

  379. from Romans 8

  380. earlier.

  381. Jesus has come

  382. for a new Exodus

  383. hasn't He?

  384. to set the captives

  385. free

  386. to make slaves

  387. into sons

  388. and if that's

  389. going to happen

  390. that requires

  391. complete forgiveness

  392. because this is

  393. a holy family

  394. the one of which

  395. God

  396. the holy God

  397. is the Father.

  398. To have Jesus

  399. as your brother

  400. and the holy God

  401. as your Father

  402. you must be delivered

  403. from your slavery

  404. to sin

  405. and given a perfect

  406. record of a son

  407. and that's exactly

  408. what Jesus

  409. has come to do

  410. right?

  411. That's why He

  412. can tell us this.

  413. Jesus says

  414. you can call God

  415. Father

  416. because you're

  417. following me

  418. trusting me

  419. and I'm headed

  420. to a cross

  421. to purchase

  422. forgiveness

  423. from all your sins

  424. and in their place

  425. to give you

  426. my perfect

  427. righteousness

  428. so the Holy Father

  429. can welcome you

  430. into His family.

  431. See there's

  432. nothing you can do

  433. you can't

  434. clean yourself up

  435. enough

  436. to call God

  437. Father

  438. but Jesus can

  439. and does

  440. and so

  441. tells you

  442. to call God

  443. Father.

  444. I read this week

  445. the story of

  446. Stan

  447. and Laurie

  448. Helm

  449. you don't know

  450. them but

  451. they many years ago

  452. adopted

  453. a son

  454. Nicholas

  455. when they went

  456. to get him

  457. he was living

  458. as an infant

  459. in a squalid

  460. orphanage

  461. in Russia.

  462. The day they

  463. picked him up

  464. Nicholas was

  465. covered in

  466. scabies

  467. blisters on

  468. his hands

  469. and his feet

  470. and his mouth

  471. and covered

  472. in the stench

  473. of his own

  474. excrement

  475. and that's

  476. when they see

  477. their son.

  478. Stan said this

  479. I looked at

  480. him in all

  481. his distress

  482. I just

  483. wanted to

  484. hold him

  485. to comfort

  486. him

  487. to heal

  488. him

  489. but more

  490. than anything

  491. else I

  492. wanted Nicholas

  493. to know

  494. just how much

  495. Laurie and I

  496. love him.

  497. What a great

  498. picture of the

  499. heart of our

  500. Father

  501. who sees

  502. the filth

  503. of our sin

  504. and yet instead

  505. of being driven

  506. away desires

  507. to heal us

  508. and let us

  509. know how much

  510. he loves us.

  511. Someone said

  512. to Stan once

  513. years later

  514. wow with you

  515. and Laurie

  516. Nicholas just

  517. won the lottery

  518. of adoption

  519. and Stan said

  520. no

  521. no you're wrong

  522. we are the

  523. lucky ones

  524. we won

  525. the lottery

  526. here

  527. no one in the

  528. world could be

  529. happier than we

  530. are to have

  531. Nicholas as

  532. our son.

  533. Can you imagine

  534. that?

  535. Can you imagine

  536. that that's how

  537. God feels

  538. about sinful

  539. broken

  540. bleeding

  541. you?

  542. Could your

  543. Father love

  544. you like that?

  545. He is not

  546. ashamed to be

  547. called our

  548. God

  549. He's our

  550. Father who

  551. delivers us

  552. and delights

  553. in us

  554. because the

  555. love of God

  556. is a perfect

  557. love

  558. He's everything

  559. a father is

  560. supposed to

  561. be

  562. and that

  563. many fathers

  564. often aren't

  565. He's perfect

  566. always

  567. present

  568. tender

  569. strong

  570. bringing

  571. security

  572. reassuring

  573. guiding

  574. He loves

  575. to care

  576. for His

  577. children

  578. That's why

  579. Andrew Murray

  580. urges us

  581. to pray

  582. in our

  583. lowest

  584. darkest

  585. most

  586. pathetic

  587. moments

  588. He says

  589. just because

  590. your heart

  591. is cold

  592. and prayerless

  593. get you

  594. into the

  595. presence

  596. of the

  597. loving

  598. Father

  599. as a

  600. father

  601. pitieth

  602. his

  603. children

  604. so the

  605. Lord

  606. pitieth

  607. you

  608. do not

  609. be thinking

  610. of how

  611. little

  612. you have

  613. to bring

  614. to God

  615. but of

  616. how much

  617. He wants

  618. to give

  619. you

  620. think of

  621. His love

  622. His wonderful

  623. tender

  624. pitying

  625. love

  626. just tell

  627. Him how

  628. sinful

  629. and cold

  630. and dark

  631. all is

  632. it is the

  633. Father's

  634. loving heart

  635. will give

  636. light

  637. and warmth

  638. to yours

  639. look up

  640. and say

  641. my

  642. Father

  643. that's

  644. what it

  645. means

  646. to have

  647. a

  648. Father

  649. that even

  650. when you

  651. have

  652. nothing

  653. to offer

  654. Him

  655. He's

  656. already

  657. planning

  658. to care

  659. for you

  660. when there's

  661. little

  662. to give

  663. and you

  664. know you

  665. have nothing

  666. to bring

  667. He's

  668. waiting

  669. to give

  670. to you

  671. when you've

  672. blown it

  673. and life

  674. is falling

  675. apart

  676. when you're

  677. sleepless

  678. in the

  679. middle of

  680. the night

  681. when your

  682. closest

  683. friends

  684. have

  685. hurt you

  686. deeply

  687. you can

  688. call out

  689. to the

  690. Heavenly

  691. Father

  692. and be

  693. confident

  694. that He

  695. loves you

  696. and forgives

  697. you

  698. because of

  699. Jesus

  700. but many of

  701. you have

  702. heard those

  703. things before

  704. and sometimes

  705. you don't

  706. feel lovable

  707. like that

  708. right

  709. when life

  710. hits hard

  711. a lot of

  712. times

  713. we feel

  714. more

  715. orphaned

  716. than we

  717. do

  718. beloved

  719. I feel

  720. fearful

  721. alone

  722. weak

  723. unwanted

  724. how could

  725. anyone

  726. possibly

  727. care

  728. perhaps

  729. even for

  730. many of

  731. you feel

  732. cynical

  733. that God

  734. would hear

  735. at all

  736. or would

  737. care

  738. if He

  739. did

  740. and it's

  741. actually

  742. especially

  743. in those

  744. moments

  745. when we

  746. feel emotions

  747. like this

  748. that we

  749. need

  750. to pray

  751. Father

  752. Martin Luther

  753. says

  754. in prayer

  755. we wage

  756. a mighty

  757. warfare

  758. in prayer

  759. we wrestle

  760. against the

  761. anxiety

  762. and unworthiness

  763. we feel

  764. within us

  765. do you fight

  766. that battle

  767. with anxiety

  768. and unworthiness

  769. I mean

  770. not sure

  771. do you

  772. have a

  773. father

  774. who listens

  775. and cares

  776. what we

  777. need to

  778. remember

  779. in that

  780. battle

  781. is that

  782. because

  783. He has

  784. adopted

  785. us

  786. into

  787. His

  788. family

  789. God

  790. our

  791. Father

  792. always

  793. always

  794. invites

  795. us

  796. into

  797. His

  798. presence

  799. you may

  800. have seen

  801. this

  802. iconic

  803. photograph

  804. of

  805. John

  806. F

  807. Kennedy

  808. Jr

  809. underneath

  810. the desk

  811. of his

  812. dad

  813. in the

  814. Oval

  815. office

  816. peering

  817. out

  818. from

  819. the

  820. neat

  821. little

  822. door

  823. there

  824. in

  825. the

  826. desk

  827. it's

  828. a

  829. famous

  830. photo

  831. of course

  832. because

  833. of

  834. how

  835. remarkable

  836. it is

  837. that

  838. someone

  839. would

  840. be

  841. there

  842. in

  843. that

  844. place

  845. where

  846. no

  847. one

  848. goes

  849. in

  850. that

  851. office

  852. right

  853. it's

  854. reported

  855. that

  856. John

  857. Kennedy

  858. Jr.

  859. would

  860. come

  861. running

  862. into

  863. the

  864. office

  865. in

  866. the

  867. middle

  868. of

  869. all

  870. sorts

  871. of

  872. important

  873. meetings

  874. and

  875. jump

  876. right

  877. into

  878. his

  879. dad's

  880. lap

  881. and

  882. start

  883. talking

  884. gets

  885. in

  886. there

  887. because

  888. he's

  889. his

  890. son

  891. because

  892. he

  893. was

  894. not

  895. at

  896. work

  897. but

  898. at

  899. home

  900. he

  901. had

  902. full

  903. access

  904. full

  905. access

  906. to

  907. the

  908. father

  909. Tim

  910. Keller

  911. says

  912. just

  913. like

  914. the

  915. only

  916. person

  917. who

  918. dares

  919. wake

  920. up

  921. a

  922. king

  923. at

  924. 3

  925. a.m.

  926. for

  927. a

  928. glass

  929. of

  930. water

  931. it's

  932. his

  933. child

  934. that's

  935. what

  936. we

  937. are

  938. so

  939. that

  940. as

  941. Galatians

  942. 4

  943. says

  944. we

  945. have

  946. the

  947. full

  948. rights

  949. of

  950. sons

  951. we're

  952. not

  953. just

  954. partially

  955. included

  956. like

  957. because

  958. he

  959. has

  960. to

  961. the

  962. full

  963. rights

  964. of

  965. sons

  966. full

  967. access

  968. to

  969. the

  970. father

  971. who

  972. welcomes

  973. us

  974. into

  975. the

  976. throne

  977. room

  978. of

  979. heaven

  980. walking

  981. straight

  982. into

  983. his

  984. presence

  985. all

  986. the

  987. time

  988. never

  989. doubt

  990. that

  991. you're

  992. welcome

  993. there

  994. at

  995. the

  996. throne

  997. of

  998. the

  999. king

  1000. of

  1001. heaven

  1002. you can

  1003. run

  1004. in

  1005. and jump

  1006. in

  1007. his

  1008. lap

  1009. anytime

  1010. because

  1011. you're

  1012. his

  1013. child

  1014. if

  1015. you can

  1016. imagine

  1017. it

  1018. actually

  1019. gets

  1020. better

  1021. than

  1022. that

  1023. it

  1024. actually

  1025. gets

  1026. better

  1027. than

  1028. just

  1029. you

  1030. can

  1031. come

  1032. in

  1033. anytime

  1034. he

  1035. doesn't

  1036. just

  1037. accept

  1038. us

  1039. into

  1040. his

  1041. presence

  1042. he

  1043. actually

  1044. invites

  1045. us

  1046. in

  1047. and

  1048. wants

  1049. us

  1050. there

  1051. and

  1052. I

  1053. gotta

  1054. confess

  1055. to

  1056. you

  1057. this

  1058. is

  1059. where

  1060. I

  1061. really

  1062. struggle

  1063. to

  1064. believe

  1065. this

  1066. and

  1067. feel

  1068. this

  1069. because

  1070. when

  1071. I'm

  1072. struggling

  1073. with

  1074. prayer

  1075. it's

  1076. not

  1077. usually

  1078. that

  1079. I

  1080. think

  1081. if

  1082. I

  1083. went

  1084. and

  1085. prayed

  1086. God

  1087. would

  1088. ignore

  1089. me

  1090. or

  1091. he

  1092. just

  1093. tuned

  1094. me

  1095. out

  1096. and

  1097. nobody

  1098. would

  1099. listen

  1100. it's

  1101. just

  1102. that

  1103. I'm

  1104. not

  1105. always

  1106. convinced

  1107. that

  1108. it's

  1109. all

  1110. that

  1111. important

  1112. to

  1113. him

  1114. so

  1115. if

  1116. it's

  1117. not

  1118. a

  1119. big

  1120. deal

  1121. to

  1122. me

  1123. if

  1124. I

  1125. don't

  1126. really

  1127. need

  1128. to

  1129. pray

  1130. or

  1131. if

  1132. I

  1133. don't

  1134. really

  1135. have

  1136. time

  1137. exactly

  1138. today

  1139. then

  1140. no

  1141. big

  1142. deal

  1143. to

  1144. him

  1145. I

  1146. don't

  1147. need

  1148. it

  1149. carry

  1150. on

  1151. and

  1152. then

  1153. I

  1154. think

  1155. of

  1156. how

  1157. my

  1158. parents

  1159. always

  1160. seem

  1161. to

  1162. answer

  1163. the

  1164. phone

  1165. when

  1166. I

  1167. call

  1168. they

  1169. may

  1170. be

  1171. in

  1172. a

  1173. meeting

  1174. or

  1175. at

  1176. lunch

  1177. with

  1178. friends

  1179. or

  1180. on

  1181. vacation

  1182. and

  1183. they

  1184. answer

  1185. and

  1186. there

  1187. are

  1188. other

  1189. people

  1190. talk

  1191. I'm

  1192. afraid

  1193. one

  1194. day

  1195. they're

  1196. going

  1197. to

  1198. answer

  1199. at

  1200. a

  1201. wedding

  1202. or

  1203. in

  1204. the

  1205. middle

  1206. of

  1207. a

  1208. classical

  1209. music

  1210. concert

  1211. or

  1212. something

  1213. to

  1214. talk

  1215. with

  1216. me

  1217. I

  1218. think

  1219. of

  1220. how

  1221. I

  1222. drove

  1223. home

  1224. from

  1225. work

  1226. a

  1227. little

  1228. faster

  1229. this

  1230. Wednesday

  1231. because

  1232. I

  1233. was

  1234. so

  1235. eager

  1236. to

  1237. hear

  1238. about

  1239. the

  1240. first

  1241. day

  1242. of

  1243. school

  1244. and

  1245. I

  1246. wanted

  1247. each

  1248. of

  1249. my

  1250. girls

  1251. to

  1252. come

  1253. up

  1254. on

  1255. my

  1256. lap

  1257. and

  1258. just

  1259. talk

  1260. and

  1261. talk

  1262. and

  1263. talk

  1264. until

  1265. they

  1266. couldn't

  1267. think

  1268. of

  1269. anything

  1270. else

  1271. to

  1272. tell

  1273. me

  1274. about

  1275. what

  1276. happened

  1277. at

  1278. the

  1279. first

  1280. day

  1281. of

  1282. school

  1283. think

  1284. of

  1285. how

  1286. you

  1287. respond

  1288. when

  1289. your

  1290. pregnant

  1291. daughter

  1292. calls

  1293. to

  1294. give

  1295. you

  1296. an

  1297. update

  1298. on

  1299. your

  1300. grandchild

  1301. or

  1302. how

  1303. you

  1304. rush

  1305. into

  1306. the

  1307. crying

  1308. child

  1309. in

  1310. the

  1311. middle

  1312. of

  1313. the

  1314. night

  1315. eager

  1316. to

  1317. know

  1318. what's

  1319. going

  1320. on

  1321. these

  1322. are

  1323. images

  1324. of

  1325. your

  1326. heavenly

  1327. father's

  1328. eagerness

  1329. to

  1330. hear

  1331. from

  1332. you

  1333. to

  1334. hear

  1335. your

  1336. heart

  1337. let me

  1338. give you

  1339. one more

  1340. image

  1341. of

  1342. that

  1343. think

  1344. of

  1345. Jesus

  1346. praying

  1347. in

  1348. the

  1349. garden

  1350. of

  1351. Gethsemane

  1352. sweating

  1353. drops

  1354. of

  1355. blood

  1356. in

  1357. his

  1358. anguish

  1359. and

  1360. as

  1361. he

  1362. struggles

  1363. and

  1364. bows

  1365. he

  1366. cries

  1367. out

  1368. father

  1369. Abba

  1370. what

  1371. do you

  1372. think

  1373. his

  1374. father

  1375. feels

  1376. do you

  1377. think

  1378. God

  1379. was

  1380. eager

  1381. to

  1382. hear

  1383. from

  1384. his

  1385. son

  1386. in

  1387. that

  1388. moment

  1389. he

  1390. hears

  1391. the

  1392. same

  1393. word

  1394. out

  1395. of

  1396. your

  1397. mouth

  1398. father

  1399. you

  1400. get

  1401. to

  1402. cry

  1403. out

  1404. exactly

  1405. what

  1406. Jesus

  1407. did

  1408. in

  1409. that

  1410. moment

  1411. no

  1412. line

  1413. more

  1414. special

  1415. or

  1416. quicker

  1417. access

  1418. than

  1419. the

  1420. one

  1421. you

  1422. have

  1423. you

  1424. call

  1425. Jesus

  1426. his

  1427. father

  1428. your

  1429. father

  1430. and

  1431. he's

  1432. on

  1433. the

  1434. edge

  1435. of

  1436. his

  1437. seat

  1438. to

  1439. hear

  1440. from

  1441. you

  1442. amazing

  1443. Thomas

  1444. Watson

  1445. writes

  1446. were

  1447. a

  1448. man

  1449. to

  1450. petition

  1451. his

  1452. enemy

  1453. there

  1454. were

  1455. little

  1456. hope

  1457. but

  1458. when

  1459. a

  1460. child

  1461. petitions

  1462. his

  1463. father

  1464. he

  1465. may

  1466. hope

  1467. with

  1468. confidence

  1469. to

  1470. succeed

  1471. the

  1472. word

  1473. father

  1474. works

  1475. upon

  1476. God

  1477. it

  1478. touches

  1479. his

  1480. very

  1481. bowels

  1482. the

  1483. word

  1484. father

  1485. on

  1486. the

  1487. lips

  1488. of

  1489. Jesus

  1490. the

  1493. on

  1494. your

  1721. father

  1722. is

  1723. eager

  1724. to

  1728. that's

  1731. to

  1732. whom

  1733. we

  1734. pray

  1735. Jesus

  1736. says

  1737. each

  1738. week

  1739. of this

  1740. series

  1741. on the

  1742. Lord's

  1743. prayer

  1744. we're

  1745. going

  1746. to

  1747. stop

  1748. and

  1749. take

  1750. some

  1751. time

  1752. to

  1753. practice

  1754. what

  1755. Jesus

  1756. is

  1757. teaching

  1758. us

  1759. give

  1760. me

  1761. a

  1763. to

  1764. make

  1765. you

  1766. feel

  1767. awkward

  1768. we're

  1769. not

  1770. just

  1771. learning

  1772. things

  1773. about

  1774. prayer

  1775. right

  1776. we're

  1777. asking

  1778. that

  1779. Jesus

  1780. would

  1781. teach

  1782. us

  1783. to

  1784. pray

  1785. I'll

  1786. try

  1787. to

  1788. give

  1789. us

  1790. questions

  1791. to

  1792. consider

  1793. each

  1794. time

  1795. in

  1796. light

  1797. of

  1798. how

  1799. Jesus

  1800. is

  1801. directing

  1802. our

  1803. hearts

  1804. in

  1805. prayer

  1806. which

  1807. he's

  1808. begun

  1809. today

  1810. with

  1811. one

  1812. word

  1813. and

  1814. is

  1815. going

  1816. to

  1817. keep

  1818. explaining

  1819. in

  1820. the

  1821. weeks

  1822. ahead

  1823. today

  1824. when

  1825. Jesus

  1826. says

  1827. father

  1828. when

  1829. he's

  1830. inviting

  1831. you

  1832. to

  1833. come

  1834. and

  1835. begin

  1836. your

  1837. prayer

  1838. as

  1839. father

  1840. what

  1841. are

  1842. things

  1843. we

  1844. could

  1845. consider

  1846. questions

  1847. we

  1848. could

  1849. ask

  1850. ourselves

  1851. to

  1852. prepare

  1853. our

  1854. hearts

  1855. and lead

  1856. us

  1857. into

  1858. prayer

  1859. we need

  1860. to slow

  1861. down

  1862. and consider

  1863. what

  1864. what is

  1865. my

  1866. relationship

  1867. with

  1868. God

  1869. what does

  1870. it mean

  1871. that he's

  1872. my father

  1873. we should

  1874. meditate

  1875. on

  1876. how is

  1877. it

  1878. that I

  1879. have

  1880. this

  1881. relationship

  1882. how is

  1883. that even

  1884. possible

  1885. then

  1886. finally

  1887. ask

  1888. yourself

  1889. how does

  1890. that

  1891. reality

  1892. impact

  1893. how I

  1894. pray

  1895. how I'm

  1896. about to

  1897. pray

  1898. now

  1899. if I've

  1900. set

  1901. aside

  1902. some

  1903. time

  1904. how I

  1905. live

  1906. through

  1907. this

  1908. day

  1909. and

  1910. relationship

  1911. with

  1912. him

  1913. will

  1914. I

  1915. pray

  1916. again

  1917. before

  1918. this

  1919. time

  1920. tomorrow

  1921. I'm

  1922. going to

  1923. guide us

  1924. through

  1925. a season

  1926. of

  1927. prayer

  1928. considering

  1929. these

  1930. three

  1931. questions

  1932. for each

  1933. one I'm

  1934. going to

  1935. have us

  1936. read

  1937. together

  1938. out

  1939. loud

  1940. a passage

  1941. of

  1942. scripture

  1943. on the

  1944. screen

  1945. that will

  1946. direct us

  1947. into

  1948. prayer

  1949. in these

  1950. areas

  1951. then we're

  1952. going to

  1953. take some

  1954. time

  1955. privately

  1956. silently

  1957. to

  1958. contemplate

  1959. that

  1960. and to

  1961. pray

  1962. to our

  1963. father

  1964. and then

  1965. after

  1966. each

  1967. section

  1968. I'll

  1969. close

  1970. us

  1971. in

  1972. prayer

  1973. join

  1974. me

  1975. as we

  1976. read

  1977. 1 John

    1 John 3 chapter mention

  1978. chapter

  1979. 3

  1980. at

  1981. verse

  1982. 1

  1983. what's

  1984. our

  1985. relationship

  1986. with

  1987. God

  1988. let's

  1989. read

  1990. together

  1991. see

  1992. what

  1993. great

  1994. love

  1995. the

  1996. father

  1997. has

  1998. lavished

  1999. on

  2000. us

  2001. that

  2002. we

  2003. should

  2004. be

  2005. called

  2006. children

  2007. of

  2008. God

  2009. and

  2010. that

  2011. is

  2012. what

  2013. we

  2014. are

  2015. take

  2016. a moment

  2017. silently

  2018. to

  2019. contemplate

  2020. that

  2021. and pray

  2022. to your

  2023. father

  2024. spent

  2025. year

  2026. or

  2027. Invest

  2028. around

  2029. Jeff

  2030. him

  2031. son

  2032. a

  2033. dog

  2034. been

  2035. a

  2036. son

  2037. minutes

  2038. that

  2039. S

2040. Father, we marvel at the privilege,

2041. the wonderful reality that we call you Father.

2042. You who are rich in every way,

  2043. perfectly loving, always forgiving,

2044. full of compassion and tenderness.

2045. You have made us your children.

2046. We're reminded that even though we fail as parents,

2047. even though a human parent may forget her child,

2048. yet you will not forget us.

2049. You've engraved our names in the palm of your hand.

  2050. We're precious to you.

2051. So Father, I'm a child of the King,

  2052. a recipient of a love I can't even comprehend,

2053. an heir of glory today and forever.

  2054. Thank you.

  2055. Amen.

2056. How do we come into that kind of relationship?

2057. We know what Jesus has done for us.

2058. Galatians 4 reminds us of that.

2059. Join me as we read.

  2060. Amen.

2061. But when the fullness of time had come,

2062. God sent forth His Son,

  2063. born of woman,

  2064. born under the law,

2065. to redeem those who were under the law

2066. so that we might receive adoption as sons.

2067. And because you are sons,

2068. God has sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts,

  2069. crying,

  2070. Abba, Father.

2071. So you are no longer a slave,

  2072. but a son.

  2073. And if a son,

2074. then an heir through God.

  2075. Spend a minute praying.

  2076. Amen.

  2077. Amen.

  2078. Amen.

  2079. Amen.

  2080. Amen.

  2081. Amen.

  2082. Amen.

  2083. Amen.

  2084. Amen.

  2085. Amen.

  2086. Amen.

  2087. Amen.

  2088. Amen.

  2089. Amen.

  2090. Amen.

  2091. Amen.

  2092. Amen.

  2093. Amen.

  2094. Amen.

  2095. Amen.

  2096. Amen.

  2097. Amen.

  2098. Amen.

  2099. Amen.

  2100. Amen.

  2101. The lengths

  2102. that You've gone to

  2103. to make us

  2104. Your own astonish us.

2105. To make those of us

2106. who are in no way worthy

  2107. of Your love,

  2108. who've often chased after

  2109. other pleasures,

  2110. who don't deserve

  2111. a Father like You.

2112. You sent the One who did,

  2113. who was deserving,

  2114. Your own perfect,

  2115. worthy,

  2116. beloved Son

  2117. for us.

2118. Remind us of how precious we are to you.

2119. Jesus, we praise you for your perfect life,

  2120. for your atoning death.

2121. We thank you for your sacrifice to wash us clean,

2122. to clothe us in your royal robes,

2123. to usher us into the family table

2124. and seat us in front of the King forever.

  2125. Thank you, Jesus.

  2126. Amen.

2127. These are realities that as we begin to contemplate them

2128. ought to change the way we talk to our Father,

2129. the way we enter into prayer.

2130. And God's Word directs us in that

2131. for what it can look like in our lives.

2132. Hebrews chapter 4, let's read this together.

    Hebrews 4 chapter mention

2133. Since then we have a great high priest

2134. who has passed through the heavens,

2135. Jesus, the Son of God.

2136. Let us hold fast our confession.

2137. For we do not have a high priest

2138. who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses,

2139. but one who in every respect

2140. has been tempted as we are,

  2141. yet without sin.

2142. Let us then with confidence

2143. draw near to the throne of grace

2144. that we may receive mercy

2145. and find grace to help

  2146. in time of need.

2147. Come boldly to the throne now.

  2148. Amen.

  2149. Amen.

  2150. Amen.

  2151. Amen.

  2152. Amen.

  2153. Amen.

  2154. Amen.

  2155. Amen.

  2156. Amen.

  2157. Amen.

  2158. Amen.

  2159. Amen.

  2160. Amen.

  2161. Amen.

  2162. Amen.

2163. Father, in the silence we hear some of the cries of your children

2164. and we delight in them as you do.

2165. You love to hear your children.

2166. And it seems so easy and obvious that we would come to you often

2167. to find mercy and grace in time of need.

2168. And we know the needs in this room alone are many.

2169. The needs of my heart alone are many.

2170. And yet, Father, I confess my heart's slow to learn,

2171. slow to approach the throne of grace and admit that need

2172. and plead for your help.

2173. So, Father, thank you for the amazing gift that I never stand before you alone,

2174. that I have no need to fear entering your presence in any moment

2175. because through the blood of Jesus you've welcomed me in

2176. and you delight to hear from me.

2177. Father, might I come boldly and expectantly before such a gracious God.

2178. Would we have such a vision of you this morning

2179. that there's nowhere we'd rather run than to talk with you?

2180. Might I come often into your presence to cry out in grief,

2181. to rejoice in your provision, to plead for those I love,

2182. to cling to the promises of your word.

2183. Lord, teach me, Jesus, to pray like this.

2184. We ask in your name. Amen.
