  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. Amen.

  5. What a great song.

  6. We love those songs from the Behold the Lamb Christmas program.

  7. Y'all like those songs?

  8. We should sing them here more often, shouldn't we?

  9. You want to sing those more often, James?

  10. How about Thursday, December 14th at 7 p.m., we could sing these songs together here?

  11. Here.

  12. In this sanctuary?

  13. With the gentleman and scholar who wrote them, composed them on his own, Mr. Andrew Peterson.

  14. Yeah.

  15. So.

  16. Can we bring our friends and the rest of Huntsville?

  17. Yes.

  18. Yeah, yeah.

  19. Most of them will fit in here.

  20. I'll say this and then I'll leave.

  21. He's gotten really popular.

  22. And so we're telling you this now so that you all can get tickets.

  23. Before everybody else does and then there's not any left for us.

  24. So.

  25. There you go.

  26. I think you have the rest of it.

  27. They will sell out quickly.

  28. Southwood.org slash Behold the Lamb.

  29. You can buy them today.

  30. I encourage you to buy them today and buy some for friends you're inviting with you or whatever.

  31. We do anticipate them going quickly and we're really excited.

  32. It's been six years since they've been here to celebrate Christmas with us.

  33. Thursday, December 14th.

  34. They'll be back.

  35. We have been talking about prayer as we make our way through the Gospel of Luke and have made it to the Lord's Prayer.

  36. As we get back into that this morning, I just wanted to remind you in our guest center, there are a couple of really good books about prayer.

  37. This one is Paul Miller's prayer.

  38. Really good theologically, but especially good practically.

  39. If you're looking for something like that.

  40. This one is Tim Keller's book called Prayer.

  41. When you're Tim Keller, all you have to do is title it Prayer.

  42. Experiencing awe and intimacy with God.

  43. It is really good practically.

  44. It's especially good theologically.

  45. If you're more bent in that direction.

  46. Both of these are available in the guest center.

  47. I just, I tell you that to encourage you that as we study this together, one thing you might want to do is take advantage of where God has us corporately.

  48. As he's teaching us to pray and to study further on your own.

  49. If you've ever wanted to do that, these books would be good tools for you to follow up more with that.

  50. That said, let me read Luke chapter 11.

    Luke 11 chapter mention

  51. The first four verses for us.

  52. And then we'll study God's Word together.

  53. This is God's holy, inerrant, infallible Word given to us.

  54. Luke 11 at verse 1.

  55. Now Jesus was praying in a certain place.

  56. And when he finished, one of his disciples said to him,

  57. Lord, teach us to pray as John taught his disciples.

  58. And he said to them, when you pray, say,

  59. Father, hallowed be your name.

  60. Your kingdom come.

  61. Give us each day our daily bread.

  62. And forgive us our sins.

  63. For we ourselves forgive everyone who is indebted to us.

  64. And lead us not into temptation.

  65. This is God's Word.

  66. Let's pray and ask him to teach us as we look at it together.

  67. Father, we do give you thanks for your Word.

  68. Jesus, we thank you for teaching us to pray.

  69. For showing us how we can relate to our Father.

  70. And so we ask you again this morning that you would teach us to pray.

  71. Teach us to trust our Father.

  72. Might we see you as great and glorious as we've come into your presence,

  73. worshiping you this morning.

  74. And might it drive us to bring all of our needs before you.

  75. Teach us as we look at your Word.

  76. We ask in Jesus' name.

  77. Amen.

  78. How many of you have eaten at G's Country Kitchen on Oakwood?

  79. Yeah, ooh, that was some excited hands going up.

  80. Yeah, if you've eaten there, you've probably eaten fried chicken,

  81. mac and cheese, black-eyed peas, collard greens,

  82. things commonly referred to as soul food.

  83. And for many of us, comfort food.

  84. And I'm going to stop talking about it because if the sermon goes too long now,

  85. you're all going to start leaving for lunch.

  86. So we love those things.

  87. We enjoy eating them.

  88. But Jesus is teaching us today about a different kind of soul food.

  89. And that's forgiveness.

  90. Father, forgive us our sins, Jesus tells us to pray.

  91. And it strikes me that Jesus in this model prayer is telling us things we can always pray for.

  92. That there's no reason ever to say,

  93. I just don't have anything that I could pray for.

  94. He starts with God-centered priorities about God's name and God's kingdom.

  95. And then he turns to praying for things that I need.

  96. And he says, pray for your daily bread.

  97. For the things you need today, you always need to eat, right?

  98. Is there anything else you always know you need?

  99. Forgiveness.

  100. I always need to eat.

  101. I always need to be forgiven.

  102. It's soul food for us.

  103. Absolutely essential for me spiritually.

  104. Without it, I die.

  105. Why?

  106. Andrew Murray said it this way.

  107. As bread is the first need of the body,

  108. so forgiveness for the soul.

  109. And the provision for the one is as sure as for the other.

  110. That's good stuff, isn't it?

  111. The provision for one is as sure as for the other.

  112. We talked last week about God's fatherly care and provision for us.

  113. That he meets all of our needs.

  114. That we can trust him in everything.

  115. The same is true with the forgiveness that we need.

  116. Jesus says, pray for daily bread and ask your father for forgiveness.

  117. I want us simply to look first at the focus of the petition that we need to be forgiven.

  118. And then we'll notice briefly the comment attached to it that we also need to be forgiving.

  119. First, let me ask you, are any of y'all friends with Mavis Wanzik?

  120. Anybody?

  121. Nobody?

  122. That's too bad.

  123. Mavis lives in Massachusetts and this week she bought the winning Powerball lottery ticket for $758 million.

  124. And it just struck me, I was thinking about this, that maybe if you're friends of hers and you didn't mind getting lottery money,

  125. which of course the Bible would have a few things to say about,

  126. but theoretically she could probably wipe out your student loan debt.

  127. Probably handle your credit card debt.

  128. Probably handle most of our mortgage debts.

  129. And it would cost her something, but I think she could handle it now.

  130. When the Bible speaks of forgiveness, it uses a number of different images.

  131. We've celebrated some of them this morning.

  132. Cleansing, covering in the sacrifices, releasing.

  133. But in particular in this passage, it's the idea of being set free from debt that is featured.

  134. The words used for forgive and indebted in the second line of this petition bring those legal monetary pictures into play.

  135. So we're asking God to release us from the debt that we owe to Him.

  136. What are we really asking when we pray that?

  137. And maybe you gloss over this petition in the Lord's Prayer sometime as though it were no big deal.

  138. Yes, God, forgive me my sins.

  139. I know I'm not perfect.

  140. I always ask for forgiveness.

  141. Yes.

  142. But let me tell you, it's a bigger deal than we often stop to calculate.

  143. Even Mavis and her $758 million can't touch this debt for you.

  144. Stop and think, what do we owe God?

  145. God created us to live in relationship with Him.

  146. A relationship where we desire His glory all the time.

  147. Where we trust Him, obey Him, enjoy Him, and therefore perfectly reflect His image in all His creation all the time.

  148. In other words, we owe Him lives of consistent, unfailing perfection for the sake of His glory all the time.

  149. He has told us we're to love Him with all our heart and soul and mind and strength.

  150. So we owe Him our emotions and our affections too, not just our actions.

  151. He's told us to love our neighbors as ourselves.

  152. So we are to take advantage of every opportunity to demonstrate His kingdom and His grace to everyone we could possibly tell and show it to.

  153. Now sometimes we rack up debt by specific violations of God's law.

  154. Those are probably the easy ones to think of.

  155. We lie.

  156. We covet.

  157. We worship idols.

  158. We harbor bitterness towards our kids.

  159. We lust.

  160. We lose our tempers with our spouse.

  161. And we could keep going on and on and naming things you know are our sins.

  162. If we had calculators and memories good enough, we could add up a big debt.

  163. But when we think of all that we owe God, much of our debt is actually what I was talking about a moment ago.

  164. We often overlook it, but it's those sins of omission.

  165. It's our failures to speak when we should have spoken, to act when we had the opportunity,

  166. to reflect God's perfect image to everyone around us all the time.

  167. We start adding those in and our tab is ridiculously high, isn't it?

  168. We can never pay it, which is the point of a parable that Jesus tells where God ends up forgiving a debt

  169. that is absolutely unpayable.

  170. No one ever could live long enough to work hard enough to pay it off.

  171. Have you stopped to reckon your account before God?

  172. To consider what you owe Him?

  173. Have you considered not merely the sinful actions and attitudes you have,

  174. but just as certainly the times you failed to act?

  175. Neglected to pray?

  176. Failed to trust?

  177. Neglected to speak?

  178. And you might have thought this petition was smaller than,

  179. hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come.

  180. Those were the big things.

  181. No way.

  182. This is a huge request.

  183. Every time we ask it, every single one of those sins has earned us eternal death.

  184. We have a debt we can never repay.

  185. We say we're spiritually bankrupt.

  186. That's the truth of who we are.

  187. And that's where the good news, the glory of Jesus, meets us.

  188. We've already been celebrating that this morning, what He's done.

  189. And we've seen it through the Gospel of Luke.

  190. Remember, as we've gone through Luke,

  191. Jesus is promised as the one who is coming to forgive sins.

  192. He's going to bring forgiveness and freedom.

  193. He's forgiven the sins of a paralyzed man in one encounter.

  194. He's forgiven the sins of a sinful woman in another story.

  195. He has told us recently that He has set intensely on going to the cross

  196. where He will purchase the forgiveness of sins,

  197. and that's a priority for Him.

  198. That's where He's headed.

  199. So the one who teaches us to pray this way

  200. is the one who Himself provides the forgiveness

  201. that our souls so desperately need.

  202. He says, ask for it, and I'm going to purchase it for you.

  203. It's why we sing, Jesus paid it all, right?

  204. All to Him I owe.

  205. He paid for the whole debt.

  206. All the things we just talked about.

  207. Specifically, first, He paid for the penalty

  208. of all those sins we committed when we violated God's holy law.

  209. Colossians 2 talks about Jesus' death on the cross in these terms.

  210. You were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh,

  211. but God made you alive together with Christ,

  212. having forgiven us all our trespasses.

  213. How did He forgive us all of those?

  214. By canceling the record of debt

  215. that stood against us with its legal demands,

  216. this He set aside,

  217. nailing it to the cross.

  218. That record of debt would have been a legal document,

  219. a piece of paper that you would have had

  220. that showed what you owed to someone in this day.

  221. And Jesus takes that record of our debt

  222. and it is nailed to the cross.

  223. Jesus on the cross is famous for saying many things.

  224. One of the ones that is sweetest

  225. is that Jesus on the cross says,

  226. it is finished.

  227. Tetelestai, He cries out.

  228. That's actually a legal accounting term.

  229. It is finished.

  230. Paid in full.

  231. Stamped on your document,

  232. the record of your debt to God.

  233. What's the sin that you think you could never pay for?

  234. What's the sin that you think about it

  235. and you feel guilty

  236. and you think this keeps me at a distance from God.

  237. He couldn't possibly love me because of this.

  238. Jesus says,

  239. paid in full.

  240. It is finished.

  241. God no longer demands payment from you

  242. for that sin that Jesus pays for fully.

  243. The debt is forgiven by the death of Jesus.

  244. That's why we're saying,

  245. what mighty sum paid all my debt

  246. when I a bondman stood

  247. and has my soul at freedom set

  248. to His Jesus' precious blood?

  249. But what else do I owe God?

  250. We've said it's actually more than those violations of His law, right?

  251. I need a perfect record of righteousness,

  252. perfect obedience,

  253. perfect reflecting of God's image

  254. for all the times I've failed.

  255. I can't go back and redo them all.

  256. I can't go back and redo them all.

  257. I can't make my record perfect

  258. and I'm required to have that.

  259. I owe it to God.

  260. And 2 Corinthians 5 says,

  261. God made Him who knew no sin

  262. to be sin for our sake

  263. so that in Him, in Jesus,

  264. we might become what?

  265. The righteousness of God.

  266. Romans 4 talks about God crediting to our account

  267. righteousness that is not ours originally.

  268. The righteousness of Jesus credited into our account.

  269. Jesus pays this part of my debt too, right?

  270. The need for righteousness.

  271. Every year I go online

  272. and I transfer some funds

  273. from my savings account

  274. into my daughter's college accounts.

  275. And we've been doing that for a few years.

  276. Hope to continue to do that.

  277. I haven't started the wedding fund

  278. for three girls

  279. because that's a little scary

  280. and intimidating to me.

  281. But here's how this college fund

  282. is supposed to work.

  283. Many of you are living in this right now.

  284. You understand this.

  285. You make the payments in

  286. and then if Caitlin goes to college,

  287. she'll rack up a tuition debt

  288. and that debt that she owes,

  289. this money will come out of this fund

  290. and pay that tuition debt, right?

  291. Let me keep dreaming for a minute.

  292. Then there's gonna be some left.

  293. And that just brings her up to zero.

  294. She just doesn't owe them for tuition

  295. but she's gotta live, right?

  296. While she's in college.

  297. And so in this dream world that I'm in

  298. where all this money has accumulated,

  299. she says, dad, I need books

  300. and I need to eat

  301. and I need something to wear

  302. and I go in and I click transfer

  303. and a thousand dollars shows up

  304. in Caitlin's account

  305. and she can live.

  306. And she didn't contribute a dime

  307. to this account.

  308. It's only hers

  309. because she's connected to me, right?

  310. Because she's my daughter,

  311. she gets these benefits coming to her.

  312. Debts forgiven.

  313. Even.

  314. Active righteousness,

  315. what she needs to live provided for.

  316. That's what Jesus does

  317. when we're connected to him.

  318. He pays the penalty

  319. for losing my temper,

  320. for lusting over someone else's family

  321. or home or body,

  322. for lying about my homework.

  323. Jesus pays that penalty

  324. and at great cost to himself

  325. brings my account to zero.

  326. I'm back even.

  327. Then he makes the righteousness transfer.

  328. Speaking God's truth to my neighbors

  329. as I'm called to.

  330. Quoting scripture to resist

  331. the temptation of the devil.

  332. Humbly trusting God in pain.

  333. And those things start showing up

  334. in my account.

  335. Who did those?

  336. Jesus.

  337. They start showing up in my account.

  338. Things that I need.

  339. And that's the full picture

  340. of what my soul needs.

  341. The forgiveness for the debt

  342. and the righteousness credited.

  343. I need both

  344. and Jesus has provided them for me.

  345. So why does he tell me

  346. to keep praying about it?

  347. This is not just Jesus talking about forgiveness.

  348. This is Jesus teaching us to pray

  349. and he says,

  350. when you pray,

  351. pray,

  352. Father,

  353. forgive us our sins.

  354. It's another thing

  355. that Jesus has already accomplished.

  356. It's already secure

  357. that he tells us to pray for

  358. in this prayer.

  359. You know by now why,

  360. don't you?

  361. Why does Jesus keep telling us

  362. to pray for things

  363. that are secure already?

  364. What's prayer about?

  365. It's about the relationship,

  366. isn't it?

  367. The relationship

  368. with the one we're praying to.

  369. We've said it over and over.

  370. Our Father wants relationship with us

  371. and forgiveness

  372. is the very basis

  373. of that relationship.

  374. As we come to pray to him,

  375. when I come to talk with my Father,

  376. I'm remembering that I do so

  377. only through the blood of Christ

  378. that pays my debts

  379. and brings me into relationship

  380. with God.

  381. It's absolutely essential

  382. or otherwise I can't pray to him.

  383. I can't talk and have relationship

  384. with him.

  385. Forgiveness is needed

  386. for my every sin

  387. and my every failure.

  388. See, this is an ongoing prayer

  389. for Christians,

  390. isn't it?

  391. Not just some of y'all

  392. need to pray this once.

  393. This is how Jesus teaches

  394. his followers to pray.

  395. Always praying for forgiveness.

  396. Always remembering our need

  397. for forgiveness

  398. and laying hold

  399. of what Jesus has done.

  400. God knows we're still sinners.

  401. And the full debt for our sins

  402. has been fully paid by Jesus.

  403. So what's this?

  404. This prayer is another chance

  405. for us to experience

  406. his grace personally.

  407. Every day.

  408. To experience in our lives

  409. that account transfer.

  410. Transfer.

  411. The funds are there

  412. from an account

  413. that will last

  414. well beyond any account

  415. Mavis ever has.

  416. It will never run out.

  417. They've been credited to me

  418. by faith.

  419. But when I pray this,

  420. I'm laying hold

  421. of that reality

  422. practically for me.

  423. For my specific debts.

  424. debts.

  425. I'm opening my account page

  426. and recognizing again

  427. where my righteousness

  428. comes from.

  429. That's experiencing grace.

  430. It's for me personally.

  431. It's why someone once said

  432. that Jesus died on the cross

  433. is history.

  434. That Jesus died for sin

  435. is theology.

  436. That Jesus died for my sin

  437. is Christianity.

  438. I need to remember

  439. and revel in Jesus

  440. paying for my debt

  441. over and over.

  442. Just as surely as I see

  443. God provide my daily needs

  444. one day after another.

  445. Remember the provision

  446. for this need

  447. in my relationship with God

  448. is just as certain.

  449. This forgiveness

  450. is soul food for me

  451. in my relationship with God.

  452. I'm at peace with him.

  453. And forgiveness works

  454. the same way

  455. in other relationships too.

  456. It's soul food for others

  457. in my relationship with them.

  458. This is the second part

  459. of the petition.

  460. Not only do we pray

  461. about being forgiven,

  462. but also we pray

  463. about being forgiving.

  464. See, the kingdom of God

  465. is one characterized

  466. by this lavish grace.

  467. forgiveness full and free

  468. where Jesus pays

  469. a high price

  470. and I am released

  471. from my debts.

  472. And if the kingdom

  473. is going to come

  474. in my life,

  475. it also,

  476. my life also,

  477. must be characterized

  478. by lavish grace.

  479. Forgiveness full and free

  480. where I in turn

  481. pay a high price

  482. and release others

  483. from their debts

  484. to me.

  485. That's why we talk

  486. at Southwood

  487. about our mission

  488. being to experience

  489. and express grace.

  490. We can't forgive

  491. others' debts

  492. unless our account

  493. is paid up

  494. and full of credit.

  495. But once it is,

  496. and as it is continually

  497. in our experience of it,

  498. we're to be passing

  499. that blessing along

  500. with the same lavish generosity,

  501. I might add.

  502. Over and over,

  503. the money transfers in.

  504. We experience grace

  505. and over and over

  506. we're told to express

  507. that grace to others.

  508. In this case,

  509. the grace of forgiveness.

  510. For we ourselves

  511. forgive everyone

  512. who is indebted to us.

  513. Wonderful.

  514. God, I've got a great idea.

  515. You forgive me

  516. at the same rate

  517. I forgive everybody else

  518. in my life.

  519. Be as generous

  520. in my account

  521. as I am in theirs.

  522. You good with that?

  523. That cool?

  524. You comfortable?

  525. Feeling good

  526. about the forgiveness

  527. you need for this?

  528. You know how we are.

  529. I mean,

  530. really gracious

  531. if you like them

  532. and a bit stingy

  533. on the days

  534. they're really getting

  535. under your skin.

  536. full pardon

  537. for the little things

  538. but breaking off

  539. the relationship

  540. altogether

  541. when they really hurt you.

  542. Immediate release

  543. from the debt

  544. sometimes

  545. if they're really sorry

  546. but probation

  547. for a while

  548. if you're not sure

  549. they're really

  550. going to change.

  551. Right?

  552. Sounds like forgiveness

  553. to me.

  554. Just doesn't

  555. sound like

  556. Jesus' forgiveness.

  557. forgiveness.

  558. Forgiving others

  559. is hard

  560. isn't it?

  561. The reason for that

  562. is that forgiveness

  563. is costly.

  564. Someone has to

  565. absorb the cost

  566. when a debt

  567. is forgiven.

  568. Ken Sandy

  569. of Peacemakers

  570. says it this way

  571. forgiveness can be

  572. a costly activity.

  573. When you cancel a debt

  574. it does not just

  575. simply disappear

  576. instead

  577. you absorb

  578. a liability

  579. that someone else

  580. deserves to pay.

  581. Similarly

  582. forgiveness requires

  583. that you absorb

  584. certain effects

  585. of another person's sins

  586. and you release

  587. that person

  588. from liability

  589. to punishment.

  590. That's hard.

  591. You have to choose

  592. to absorb

  593. the cost.

  594. But that's the essence

  595. of forgiveness.

  596. Right?

  597. Absorbing the cost

  598. of someone else's

  599. debt.

  600. The payback

  601. you could have

  602. demanded

  603. rightfully.

  604. The weeks

  605. of housework

  606. you could have

  607. held over your husband.

  608. The weeks

  609. of cold shoulder

  610. you could have

  611. used to make

  612. your wife pay.

  613. The weeks

  614. of favors

  615. you could have

  616. demanded

  617. from your friend.

  618. Whatever it is

  619. you're

  620. forgiving

  621. that

  622. debt.

  623. Now to be clear

  624. forgiveness

  625. doesn't always

  626. remove all

  627. consequences.

  628. You may forgive

  629. and still need

  630. physical separation

  631. for your own

  632. protection.

  633. You may forgive

  634. and still take

  635. the person to rehab

  636. for their own

  637. good at the same

  638. time.

  639. But forgiveness

  640. means you absorb

  641. the cost that the

  642. offender owes

  643. to you.

  644. And that is so

  645. hard to do

  646. because it is so

  647. much easier to be

  648. bitter

  649. and distant

  650. or hateful

  651. in your heart.

  652. Isn't it?

  653. Who are you

  654. thinking of

  655. right now

  656. when you think

  657. of forgiving

  658. others?

  659. It's so hard

  660. to absorb

  661. the cost

  662. of those

  663. debts

  664. but it's

  665. so Christian.

  666. Sandy

  667. concludes

  668. this way

  669. this is

  670. precisely

  671. what Christ

  672. accomplished

  673. on Calvary.

  674. The absorbing

  675. certain effects

  676. of another

  677. person's sin

  678. to release

  679. them

  680. from

  681. punishment.

  682. It's exactly

  683. what Jesus

  684. did for us.

  685. He set us

  686. free

  687. from our

  688. debt

  689. at great

  690. cost

  691. to himself

  692. right?

  693. It hurt.

  694. It wasn't

  695. easy.

  696. And that's

  697. how he has

  698. forgiven us.

  699. And so

  700. Jesus is now

  701. saying

  702. that forgiven

  703. people

  704. forgive

  705. people.

  706. It's not

  707. that you're

  708. forgiving

  709. others

  710. earns

  711. your right

  712. to be

  713. forgiven

  714. by God

  715. but rather

  716. if you

  717. don't

  718. forgive

  719. others

  720. you

  721. evidence

  722. the

  723. reality

  724. that

  725. you

  726. have

  727. not

  728. received

  729. the

  730. greater

  731. gracious

  732. forgiveness

  733. of God.

  734. This is

  735. why it's

  736. so important

  737. regularly

  738. to calculate

  739. our debt

  740. to God

  741. the unpayable

  742. debt

  743. that cost

  744. him

  745. his only

  746. son

  747. because

  748. no debt

  749. anyone owes

  750. us

  751. is that

  752. great.

  753. And what

  754. does the

  755. gospel say?

  756. that

  757. unpayable

  758. debt

  759. has been

  760. forgiven

  761. us

  762. by God.

  763. No holds

  764. barred

  765. no strings

  766. attached

  767. running

  768. off the

  769. porch

  770. counter

  771. cultural

  772. throwing

  773. your arms

  774. around

  775. the

  776. prodigal

  777. son

  778. kissing

  779. him

  780. kind

  781. of

  782. forgiveness

  783. that we've

  784. received

  785. right?

  786. That's how

  787. God forgives

  788. us.

  789. He's not

  790. waiting

  791. to see

  792. how well

  793. we perform.

  794. He's not

  795. hedging his

  796. bets on

  797. how sincere

  798. we are.

  799. He's

  800. running

  801. to forgive

  802. us.

  803. And then

  804. he tells

  805. us

  806. that's how

  807. you forgive

  808. others.

  809. It's the

  810. very essence

  811. of Christianity

  812. of our

  813. relationship

  814. with our

  815. heavenly

  816. father

  817. that he

  818. loves

  819. and delights

  820. in us

  821. the way

  822. that father

  823. delights

  824. in the

  825. son who

  826. has deeply

  827. sinned

  828. against

  829. him.

  830. Do those

  831. who've

  832. offended

  833. you who

  834. are indebted

  835. to you

  836. feel that

  837. kind

  838. of

  839. love

  840. from

  841. you?

  842. And if

  843. they did

  844. imagine

  845. that they

  846. begin to

  847. feel that

  848. from you

  849. wouldn't it

  850. transform

  851. your

  852. relationship?

  853. Wouldn't

  854. forgiveness

  855. like that

  856. make your

  857. relationship

  858. with them

  859. entirely

  860. different?

  861. Couldn't

  862. it transform

  863. even a

  864. seemingly

  865. hopeless

  866. marriage?

  867. Couldn't

  868. it transform

  869. even a

  870. community

  871. with diverse

  872. people

  873. and a

  874. lot of

  875. wounds?

  876. Couldn't

  877. it transform

  878. our fractured

  879. world

  880. these days?

  881. Ten years

  882. ago in

  883. Lancaster,

  884. Pennsylvania

  885. Charles Carl

  886. Roberts

  887. broke into

  888. an Amish

  889. schoolhouse

  890. and out

  891. of anger

  892. at God

  893. took hostage

  894. several

  895. elementary

  896. aged

  897. schoolgirls

  898. and shot

  899. and killed

  900. five of

  901. them before

  902. killing

  903. himself.

  904. It was a

  905. horrific

  906. event,

  907. you may

  908. remember it

  909. from the

  910. news.

  911. For that

  912. Amish

  913. community

  914. the grief

  915. was intense.

  916. A quiet

  917. old fashioned

  918. Christian

  919. community

  920. broken

  921. into

  922. by the

  923. evil

  924. of murder.

  925. But as

  926. intense as

  927. their grief

  928. was,

  929. their grace

  930. was equally

  931. intense.

  932. By the

  933. afternoon of

  934. the shooting

  935. members of

  936. that community

  937. were praying

  938. and crying

  939. with the

  940. widow of

  941. the shooter

  942. and her

  943. family.

  944. They began

  945. to make

  946. public

  947. pronouncements

  948. of their

  949. forgiveness

  950. of the

  951. shooter.

  952. And they

  953. demonstrated

  954. tangible

  955. reality of

  956. that forgiveness

  957. by inviting

  958. the widow

  959. as one of

  960. the few

  961. outsiders to

  962. the funeral

  963. of these

  964. girls.

  965. And by

  966. setting up

  967. a fund

  968. to provide

  969. for her

  970. children,

  971. not just

  972. their own.

  973. This

  974. widow,

  975. her name

  976. is Marie

  977. Monville

  978. now,

  979. thought for

  980. sure she'd

  981. be leaving

  982. this area,

  983. needing to

  984. move to a

  985. different community.

  986. She stayed

  987. there and

  988. lived,

  989. never had to

  990. leave.

  991. she's since

  992. written books

  993. about the

  994. Amish grace,

  995. the incredible

  996. forgiveness she

  997. was shown,

  998. that she

  999. says,

  1000. and I

  1001. quote,

  1002. helped to

  1003. provide the

  1004. healing we

  1005. so desperately

  1006. need.

  1007. Gifts

  1008. you've given

  1009. have touched

  1010. our hearts

  1011. in a way

  1012. no words

  1013. can describe.

  1014. Your compassion

  1015. has reached

  1016. beyond our

  1017. family,

  1018. beyond our

  1019. community,

  1020. and is

  1021. changing

  1022. our world.

  1023. now you

  1024. might not

  1025. have realized

  1026. that many

  1027. criticized the

  1028. Amish for

  1029. this whole

  1030. situation.

  1031. This

  1032. forgiveness was

  1033. ridiculous,

  1034. they said it

  1035. denied the

  1036. reality of

  1037. the evil

  1038. that had

  1039. taken place,

  1040. they forgave

  1041. too quickly

  1042. and too

  1043. thoroughly,

  1044. but they

  1045. knew it

  1046. was quite

  1047. the opposite.

  1048. Forgiveness

  1049. like that

  1050. doesn't deny

  1051. the reality

  1052. of evil

  1053. or sizable

  1054. debt,

  1055. quite the

  1056. opposite.

  1057. It rather

  1058. acknowledges

  1059. the reality

  1060. of debt

  1061. and says

  1062. there is

  1063. nothing

  1064. that can

  1065. pay a

  1066. debt like

  1067. this other

  1068. than the

  1069. blood of

  1070. Jesus.

  1071. It requires

  1072. his payment

  1073. for this

  1074. to be

  1075. covered and

  1076. it chooses

  1077. to say

  1078. that God's

  1079. grace is

  1080. bigger than

  1081. the debt

  1082. that is

  1083. owed.

  1084. That even

  1085. though the

  1086. Amish had

  1087. lost their

  1088. own children,

  1089. their God

  1090. had forgiven

  1091. them a debt

  1092. at the cost

  1093. of his

  1094. very own

  1095. son.

  1096. How could

  1097. they not

  1098. also

  1099. forgive?

  1100. And forgiveness

  1101. like that

  1102. really does

  1103. change the

  1104. world.

  1105. It's soul

  1106. food for

  1107. you

  1108. and for

  1109. the one

  1110. you forgive,

  1111. healing your

  1112. relationship

  1113. in a way

  1114. nothing else

  1115. can,

  1116. giving them

  1117. something to

  1118. share with

  1119. others as

  1120. Jesus has

  1121. given to

  1122. you forgiveness

  1123. to pass

  1124. along.

  1125. And so

  1126. we pray

  1127. regularly,

  1128. Father,

  1129. forgive us

  1130. our sins

  1131. for we

  1132. ourselves

  1133. forgive all

  1134. those who

  1135. are indebted

  1136. to us.

  1137. We pray

  1138. that God

  1139. would forgive

  1140. the evil

  1141. we do,

  1142. the good

  1143. that we

  1144. neglect

  1145. to do.

  1146. We pray

  1147. God would

  1148. continue to

  1149. allow that

  1150. grace to

  1151. change us

  1152. and flow

  1153. through us,

  1154. that the

  1155. very forgiveness

  1156. we experience

  1157. would be

  1158. expressed to

  1159. many others.

  1160. Let's spend

  1161. a minute

  1162. reflecting on

  1163. our own

  1164. hearts,

  1165. confessing our

  1166. personal sins

  1167. and then we'll

  1168. join together

  1169. in praying

  1170. for God's

  1171. forgiveness.

  1172. Pray silently

  1173. for a minute.

  1226. forgive us

1227. we have neglected your word

  1234. father forgive us

1235. we confess our intemperate love

  1239. father

  1240. forgive us
