  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. If you have Bibles with you in one form or the other, open them to Luke 11.

  5. We're continuing our journey through Luke.

  6. Luke, and now we have finished this section, and I'm glad we've taken an extended time dealing

  7. with this section on prayer.

  8. Now we get to a little bit different scene, and we begin to see the opposition come to

  9. Jesus.

  10. Now let's read.

  11. You can follow with me as I read, and it's going to be a rather long section from verse 14

  12. all the way down through verse 36.

  13. Now he was casting out a demon that was mute.

  14. When the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke, and people marveled.

  15. But some of them said, he cast out demons by Beelzebul, the prince of demons.

  16. While others, detest him, kept seeking from him a sign from heaven.

  17. But he, knowing their thoughts, said to them, every kingdom divided against itself is laid

  18. waste.

  19. And a divided household falls.

  20. So, and if Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand?

  21. For you say, I cast out demons by Beelzebul.

  22. And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out?

  23. Therefore, they will be your judges.

  24. But if it is by the finger of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come

  25. upon you.

  26. And when a strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace, his goods are safe.

  27. But when one stronger than he attacks him and overcomes him, he takes away his armor, in

  28. which he trusted, and divides his spoil.

  29. So whoever is not with me is against me.

  30. And whoever does not gather with me scatters.

  31. And when the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through waterless places

  32. seeking rest.

  33. And finding none, it says, I will return to my house from which I came.

  34. And when it comes, it finds the house swept and put in order.

  35. And then it goes and brings seven other spirits more evil than itself.

  36. And they enter and dwell there.

  37. And the state of that person is worse than at first.

  38. And as he said these things, a woman in the crowd raised her voice and said to him, blessed

  39. is the womb that bore you and the breasts at which you nursed.

  40. But he said, blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and keep it.

  41. And when the crowds were increasing, he began to say, this generation is an evil generation.

  42. It seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah.

  43. For as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so will the Son of Man be to this generation.

  44. The Queen of the South will rise up at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them.

  45. For she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon.

  46. Behold, someone greater than Solomon is here.

  47. The men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it.

  48. For they repented at the preaching of Jonah.

  49. And behold, something greater than Jonah is here.

  50. No one, after lighting a lamp, puts it in a cellar or under a basket, but on a stand,

  51. so that those who enter may see the light.

  52. Your eye is the lamp of your body.

  53. And when your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light.

  54. But when it is bad, your body is full of darkness.

  55. Therefore, be careful, lest the light in you be darkness.

  56. And if then your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, it will be wholly bright.

  57. It's when a lamp with its rays gives you light.

  58. Let's bow in prayer and ask the giver of God's word to come and now give us insight into his word.

  59. Father, we pray that you would come and be our teacher.

  60. There is so much here that you would say to us.

  61. But our hearts need your work.

  62. So would you come and make our hearts soft?

  63. Make them fertile ground for the planting of your word.

  64. Use my own foolishness to bring us into the light of wisdom.

  65. The wisdom that comes from you and not from man.

  66. So would you come and speak to us in this time as we study together.

  67. And we pray in the name of the living word.

  68. Even Jesus.

  69. Amen.

  70. You know, we're moving from a very pleasant situation where Jesus' disciples come to him.

  71. And they ask that great question.

  72. He says, Lord, teach us to pray.

  73. You know, how do you pray?

  74. I mean, you are praying and they've observed him praying all this time.

  75. And so they want to learn.

  76. And that really shows a great posture of what it means to be a disciple.

  77. And so Jesus teaches them.

  78. And in so doing, teaches them at the core of what he taught was who it is to whom they pray.

  79. It's not the mechanics of prayer.

  80. But it's the object of prayer.

  81. It's the one for whom they bow.

  82. But now as we come out of that, and we're going to see more and more of this.

  83. We're going to see opposition.

  84. Beginning to face Jesus.

  85. Because now we see in a lot of ways a contrast between the posture of a disciple.

  86. And then the posture of an unbelieving world.

  87. And so as we encounter this, there's so much in this text.

  88. What I want us to do is really look at what we can learn about this unbelief that we see demonstrated in the world.

  89. And what we're going to see here is that opposition always comes.

  90. Opposition will always come when the kingdom advances.

  91. This is a fact for us as believers.

  92. So when we see the kingdom move here in our community.

  93. When we see it move in our own lives.

  94. We will see and experience opposition to that kingdom.

  95. But one of the things about this opposition is the opposition is not necessarily over the facts.

  96. But the implications.

  97. One of the things here when we look at this scene.

  98. Is there something very striking here to me.

  99. And every time I read through the gospels I always marvel at this.

  100. Jesus is now in this group of people.

  101. And he casts out a demon from this man who was unable to speak.

  102. It's a very obvious miracle.

  103. And Luke says that everybody marveled.

  104. And then they got ticked off.

  105. So what is there about a miracle that Jesus performs that gets people so upset?

  106. And look at the two responses they have.

  107. One they're ascribing the work that he does to the devil himself.

  108. Or even in the face of this very obvious miracle.

  109. They're looking at Jesus and says.

  110. Alright prove.

  111. That you can do this miracle.

  112. Prove.

  113. That you have authority.

  114. How do we know.

  115. Who you are.

  116. And that you are legit.

  117. Even in the face of.

  118. What just happened.

  119. Unfortunately.

  120. What we see in these people.

  121. Is all too normal.

  122. And that is.

  123. That is a picture.

  124. In many ways.

  125. As all of this section is that I've read through.

  126. A picture of what unbelief looks like.

  127. And we're not going to be able to go through and examine all of this down into the details.

  128. We're going to take kind of a high altitude look at this.

  129. But I think in this passage.

  130. We are given a great picture here.

  131. Of what unbelief.

  132. Really looks like.

  133. And I will say this too.

  134. That as we look at this.

  135. And we think about unbelief.

  136. The first thing that's going to come to our minds.

  137. Is unbelief out there.

  138. This is what we're going to experience.

  139. From the world.

  140. And from people outside of the kingdom.

  141. But it's not just them.

  142. It's us too.

  143. So.

  144. With that in mind.

  145. What do we learn here.

  146. About this whole nature of unbelief.

  147. The first thing.

  148. We see is unbelief.

  149. Belief.

  150. Is.

  151. Intentional.

  152. It's not accidental.

  153. It's not just out of ignorance.

  154. It's purposeful.

  155. It's interesting here.

  156. As we see this section.

  157. In some ways.

  158. Luke kind of frames it.

  159. By this demand.

  160. Of this generation.

  161. For signs.

  162. For Jesus.

  163. To do something.

  164. To validate.

  165. His authority.

  166. To do what he does.

  167. And to say.

  168. What he does.

  169. And so we have it up there.

  170. At the front.

  171. You know.

  172. That they're.

  173. They're seeking signs.

  174. And Luke.

  175. Again.

  176. Gives us insight.

  177. They're not just wanting more evidence.

  178. They're testing.

  179. They've got enough evidence.

  180. But it's not enough for them.

  181. So they're testing.

  182. And then down later.

  183. He talks about this evil generation.

  184. Seeks a sign.

  185. And so what is it about signs?

  186. Why is this such a problem?

  187. If we remember.

  188. We go back to Gideon.

  189. In Judges.

  190. And Gideon asked for signs.

  191. Repeatedly.

  192. Before.

  193. He went.

  194. To do the work that God had called him to do.

  195. And God condescended to him.

  196. Didn't rebuke him.

  197. But actually met him.

  198. With the two signs Gideon asked for.

  199. And then gave him another one that he didn't ask for.

  200. The problem here.

  201. Is that.

  202. They've just seen one.

  203. And they've seen a sign.

  204. That they were.

  205. They knew.

  206. That only.

  207. Could be.

  208. Could happen.

  209. When the kingdom.

  210. The Messiah.

  211. Came.

  212. And it happened right in front of their face.

  213. And it wasn't enough.

  214. And so they keep.

  215. Pushing.

  216. And they're asking for.

  217. On the service.

  218. What looks like.

  219. Said look.

  220. That was nice.

  221. We just need a little bit more.

  222. To be convinced here.

  223. But that's not what's going on.

  224. There's something much deeper.

  225. Much more insidious.

  226. In looking.

  227. For.

  228. Evidence.

  229. So actually.

  230. Inwardly.

  231. As they're asking for.

  232. More evidence.

  233. What they're doing.

  234. Is not.

  235. Trying to draw nearer to Jesus.

  236. They're trying to hold him off.

  237. They're pushing him away.

  238. And they themselves.

  239. Have now set up standard.

  240. A standard.

  241. By which.

  242. They.

  243. Are going to judge.

  244. The king.

  245. And the judge himself.

  246. On his authenticity.

  247. And I think we need to understand this.

  248. Especially when we do go out.

  249. Into the world.

  250. Unbelief.

  251. By people out there.

  252. You will hear.

  253. A lot of people will.

  254. Will struggle.

  255. And it says.

  256. Well.

  257. You know.

  258. Prove to me that.

  259. Jesus is who he is.

  260. Prove to me.

  261. That the bible is the word of God.

  262. Prove to me that God exists.

  263. You know.

  264. Prove to me.

  265. All of this.

  266. And so.

  267. Our challenge is.

  268. A lot of times.

  269. We take.

  270. That posture.

  271. And it says.

  272. You know.

  273. If I just give them.

  274. Enough proofs.

  275. Enough evidence.

  276. They're going to believe.

  277. Because we know.

  278. Our faith is rational.

  279. It is based on.

  280. Real knowledge.

  281. And real truth.

  282. And so.

  283. We think.

  284. That all we've got to do.

  285. Is just.

  286. Let's clarify the issue here.

  287. Make a good case.

  288. Sometimes.

  289. That issue.

  290. May be.

  291. Intellectual.

  292. Because we know.

  293. Great stories.

  294. Of people who.

  295. When they heard.

  296. The arguments.

  297. Their heart was changed.

  298. But that is not.

  299. Normally the case.

  300. Normally.

  301. The problem.

  302. The problem is not.

  303. Intellectual.

  304. It's moral.

  305. They're not struggling.

  306. Over evidence.

  307. It's the implications.

  308. Romans 1.

  309. Paul lays this out for us.

  310. Very clearly.

  311. Romans 1 verse 18.

    Romans 1:18

  312. He says to us.

  313. For the wrath of God.

  314. Is revealed.

  315. Against all.

  316. All ungodliness.

  317. And unrighteousness.

  318. Of men.

  319. Who.

  320. By their.

  321. Unrighteousness.

  322. Suppress.

  323. The truth.

  324. Suppressing the truth.

  325. Is an active.

  326. Verb.

  327. Unbelievers.

  328. And Paul goes on.

  329. To say through that text.

  330. They have all the evidence.

  331. They need.

  332. They can see the glory.

  333. Of God.

  334. In creation.

  335. They can see it.

  336. In all of the world.

  337. And they know it.

  338. But they won't accept it.

  339. And so they're actively.

  340. At work.

  341. Keeping it.

  342. Underwrapped.

  343. So.

  344. It does not.

  345. Interfere.

  346. Because unbelievers.

  347. Those who do not believe.

  348. Have built a world.

  349. Shaped.

  350. Around themselves.

  351. We have a clash.

  352. Of kingdoms.

  353. Here.

  354. Jesus comes.

  355. And we see that.

  356. Even as Jesus.

  357. Talks about the whole thing.

  358. With a kingdom.

  359. Divided against himself.

  360. And the strong man.

  361. And so forth.

  362. Well Jesus.

  363. Is the strong man.

  364. Who's come.

  365. To take over.

  366. And to occupy.

  367. To take the man's goods.

  368. He is the one.

  369. Who's coming.

  370. But see.

  371. We built a whole different world.

  372. It's built around us.

  373. In our own autonomy.

  374. And if the reality.

  375. Of Jesus coming.

  376. If that's true.

  377. I have a dilemma.

  378. Am I going to continue.

  379. To serve me.

  380. Or am I going to bow to another king.

  381. And we don't bow easily.

  382. And so we use these kind of arguments.

  383. You know.

  384. We've got a good thing going.

  385. You know.

  386. Even those Jews of that day.

  387. They had their system.

  388. They had their world.

  389. And they had it all controlled.

  390. And Jesus comes in.

  391. And disrupts everything.

  392. And so as we do evangelism.

  393. Even.

  394. As we encounter non-believers.

  395. There are going to be times.

  396. We have to be prepared.

  397. To defend.

  398. The rationality.

  399. Of our faith.

  400. And that it is built.

  401. On sound thinking.

  402. Sound logic.

  403. It is reasonable.

  404. And you know.

  405. We have to be able.

  406. To defend that.

  407. But that will not win the day.

  408. What we're struggling with.

  409. Is a heart.

  410. That is in rebellion.

  411. Against knowledge.

  412. That is already aware of.

  413. And it just refuses to bow.

  414. And so that changes.

  415. The way we do evangelism.

  416. One thing.

  417. Instead of just.

  418. Spending all our time.

  419. Arguing.

  420. We need to spend.

  421. A lot more time praying.

  422. And instead of just.

  423. Challenging people.

  424. With the truth.

  425. We need to focus.

  426. On the implications.

  427. Of that truth.

  428. And instead of just.

  429. Calling them to an understanding.

  430. We need to call them.

  431. To repentance.

  432. We are.

  433. When we do evangelism.

  434. We're calling people.

  435. To worship.

  436. We're calling them.

  437. To bow.

  438. And that is where.

  439. As Jesus said.

  440. At the end of that last section.

  441. Where God gives his Holy Spirit.

  442. That's what he has to do.

  443. So that they'll turn.

  444. But is that.

  445. The same way with us.

  446. God.

  447. Is that.

  448. The same way with us.

  449. Is that.

  450. Eh.

  451. Yeah.

  452. How many promises.

  453. In the scripture do you know.

  454. How many are you aware of.

  455. See.

  456. When we come to Christ.

  457. When we first believe.

  458. Everything doesn't change overnight.

  459. I still.

  460. I still.

  461. Have a heart.

  462. That has.

  463. Developed a reality.

  464. Where I am the center.

  465. I am in control.

  466. I determine.

  467. What my life will be.

  468. I determine.

  469. What values.

  470. Will be.

  471. I determine.

  472. The definition.

  473. Of what good is.

  474. And so.

  475. Life.

  476. Revolves.

  477. Around me.

  478. And when the truth of God.

  479. Comes.

  480. And I hear these promises.

  481. They can be very.

  482. Very.

  483. Disruptive.

  484. We heard in the.

  485. The men's retreat.

  486. This last weekend.

  487. And.

  488. One moment.

  489. I really thought.

  490. I'd.

  491. Asked the wrong speaker.

  492. To come.

  493. Because it was getting.

  494. Hot.

  495. In the room.

  496. At least for me.

  497. And he was.

  498. In a sense.

  499. In a way.

  500. Delving into.

  501. An area of.

  502. In my life.

  503. That I was.

  504. Where I was.

  505. Refusing to bow.

  506. And it was.

  507. Because of situations.

  508. You know.

  509. It was a hard situation.

  510. And.

  511. In that situation.

  512. I know his promise.

  513. That he is good.

  514. I know.

  515. His control.

  516. Over all things.

  517. I know.

  518. Up here.

  519. That everything.

  520. He gives me.

  521. Is a gift.

  522. But yet.

  523. I whine.

  524. I complain.

  525. I get angry.

  526. I get angry.

  527. With him.

  528. And say.

  529. You absolutely.

  530. Do not love me.

  531. And I've got.

  532. All the evidence.

  533. In the world.

  534. How much more.

  535. Evidence.

  536. Do I need?

  537. I have a savior.

  538. Who came.

  539. And died.

  540. And was raised again.

  541. What more.

  542. Do I need to see?

  543. The problem is not.

  544. Evidence.

  545. The problem is worship.

  546. Worship.

  547. And when the king comes.

  548. He demands.

  549. Worship.

  550. For himself.

  551. Alone.

  552. And I have to get off the throne.

  553. Unbelief.

  554. Belief.

  555. Calls me instead.

  556. To give thanks.

  557. Instead of complaining.

  558. Belief.

  559. Belief.

  560. Calls me to rejoice.

  561. Instead of my incessant whining.

  562. Belief.

  563. Calls me to trust.

  564. And rest.

  565. And give up.

  566. The fight.

  567. Because.

  568. I want to set a new sheriff's in town.

  569. But a new king.

  570. Has come to the throne.

  571. Secondly.

  572. Unbelief.

  573. Is intentional.

  574. But it is also.

  575. Unreasonable.

  576. Or we could say.

  577. It is.

  578. Unbelief is irrational.

  579. It's crazy.

  580. The arguments put forth.

  581. Here.

  582. To Jesus.

  583. Are silly.

  584. And he.

  585. And he very.

  586. Calmly.

  587. And gently.

  588. Straightens out.

  589. These arguments.

  590. This is why.

  591. Satan is.

  592. Throwing out his own.

  593. Demons.

  594. And Jesus said.

  595. That's dumb.

  596. How's this kingdom.

  597. Going to stand.

  598. If they follow your.

  599. Rational thinking.

  600. And so.

  601. It's just.

  602. Unreasonable.

  603. Unreasonable.

  604. That they would come up.

  605. With this kind.

  606. Of a defense.

  607. In what Jesus does.

  608. He moves then.

  609. From that.

  610. And he's moving them.

  611. Towards those implications.

  612. Because.

  613. You know.

  614. If.

  615. And this is where.

  616. They don't want to go.

  617. Because.

  618. If.

  619. The king.

  620. Has actually come.

  621. He's taken over.

  622. There's a.

  623. A great book.

  624. On apologetics.

  625. I really like.

  626. It was written.

  627. A couple years ago.

  628. By Os Guinness.

  629. It's called.

  630. Fool's Talk.

  631. And in this.

  632. Book.

  633. He talks about.

  634. These two poles.

  635. That.

  636. Unbelievers.

  637. Have to.

  638. Wrestle with.

  639. Because.

  640. One of those poles.

  641. Is.

  642. The pole of dilemma.

  643. And let me just read.

  644. What he says here.

  645. The dilemma pole.

  646. Expresses the logic.

  647. Of the fact.

  648. That the more consistent.

  649. People are.

  650. To their own.

  651. View of reality.

  652. Which is highly inconsistent.

  653. The less close.

  654. They are to God's reality.

  655. And the more likely.

  656. They are to feel their dilemma.

  657. In other words.

  658. The more they see.

  659. This deep.

  660. In consistency.

  661. The more they get.

  662. Away from God's.

  663. Reality.

  664. And close to themselves.

  665. And become aware of.

  666. This false.

  667. Unsubstantial.

  668. View of reality.

  669. They're in a dilemma.

  670. Because now they see.

  671. Very clearly.

  672. That what they have constructed.

  673. Is a house.

  674. Made on sand.

  675. And.

  676. That's what they are.

  677. And.

  678. But then he goes on.

  679. There's another pole.

  680. It says.

  681. The diversion pole.

  682. Expresses the fact.

  683. That the less consistent.

  684. People are.

  685. To their own view of reality.

  686. And the closer they are.

  687. To God's.

  688. The more they have.

  689. They must find.

  690. A diversion.

  691. In other words.

  692. All right.

  693. They can't live.

  694. Over here.

  695. And.

  696. See clearly.

  697. Their.

  698. Very.

  699. False.

  700. Construction.

  701. Of reality.

  702. Because that produces.

  703. A dilemma.

  704. But over here.

  705. If they start getting close.

  706. To the real idea.

  707. Of reality.

  708. That.

  709. Produces.

  710. A dilemma.

  711. And so.

  712. What they.

  713. Turn to.

  714. In the face of.

  715. All of this.

  716. To avoid.

  717. Reality.

  718. Is diversion.

  719. In other words.

  720. They have to hide.

  721. From the truth.

  722. And not face.

  723. The real issues.

  724. Of life.

  725. So that.

  726. The life.

  727. Of inconsistency.

  728. In which they live.

  729. Is not disrupted.

  730. It's relatively.

  731. Comfortable.

  732. But to do that.

  733. They have to avoid.

  734. The questions of.

  735. What is the meaning of life?

  736. Who am I?

  737. Where do I come from?

  738. Why am I here?

  739. Where am I going?

  740. What is death like?

  741. What's on the other side?

  742. And so they live.

  743. Because they can't face those.

  744. Because they take them to.

  745. Reality.

  746. They live in diversion.

  747. One of those diversions.

  748. Which he speaks about.

  749. He said.

  750. He refers to.

  751. As objects of mass distraction.

  752. Are these.

  753. Or the ones you have.

  754. In your pockets.

  755. Through all the networks.

  756. Anything.

  757. Entertainment.

  758. You know.

  759. I like this.

  760. Well.

  761. I don't like it.

  762. There's this commercial.

  763. On TV.

  764. And I can't remember.

  765. If it's AT&T.

  766. And Verizon.

  767. But Mark Wahlberg.

  768. Is out there.

  769. Talking about.

  770. Makes this statement.

  771. Is we want.

  772. Our entertainment.

  773. Now.

  774. And we want it.

  775. Everywhere we go.

  776. We can't go anywhere.

  777. Without our shows.

  778. Without our movies.

  779. Without our sports.

  780. All of these things.

  781. And we live this life.

  782. The world lives this life.

  783. Of total diversion.

  784. To escape.

  785. Reality.

  786. To avoid reality.

  787. And where they come to.

  788. Is just.

  789. It's irrational.

  790. The positions.

  791. That they take.

  792. Are so inconsistent.

  793. And we can see it.

  794. But it doesn't bother them.

  795. They just don't think about it.

  796. You know.

  797. Ideas.

  798. That.

  799. There are no moral absolutes.

  800. Except.

  801. That there are no moral absolutes.

  802. As soon as you say that.

  803. You declare an absolute.

  804. They want to say.

  805. That we.

  806. There.

  807. There is no God.

  808. Who shaped us.

  809. Or created things.

  810. We have evolved.

  811. From these little cells.

  812. That began at the bottom.

  813. Of some pond.

  814. Somewhere.

  815. And then they want to say.

  816. In the same breath.

  817. We have great dignity.

  818. And value.

  819. And they cannot see.

  820. The problem.

  821. With those two statements.

  822. And so.

  823. Unbelief.

  824. That people.

  825. That we're dealing with.

  826. Is irrational.

  827. It cannot be rational.

  828. Because the closer.

  829. You get to rationality.

  830. The closer.

  831. You get to God's reality.

  832. And the implications.

  833. Become clear.

  834. So.

  835. But we're enlightened.

  836. We're.

  837. We're.

  838. We've come to Jesus.

  839. Yeah.

  840. I think.

  841. I can actually control my life.

  842. I think.

  843. I know what's best.

  844. I think.

  845. I think.

  846. That.

  847. My little efforts.

  848. Of making sure.

  849. That my dishwasher.

  850. Is loaded the proper way.

  851. Gives me value.

  852. But.

  853. That's true.

  854. That.

  855. Who's irrational.

  856. Unbelief.

  857. It's intentional.

  858. But it's crazy.

  859. Because I know.

  860. The one.

  861. Who shapes.

  862. All things.

  863. I know.

  864. The one.

  865. Who gives me value.

  866. I know him.

  867. and I still don't bow.

  868. I live in this delusion

  869. that somehow it's all me.

  870. The reality is I am powerless.

  871. I am helpless.

  872. And I'm just a creature.

  873. But if the king has come,

  874. he has come to do so much in me

  875. that I could never do

  876. and to control my life in such a good way

  877. that I could never accomplish.

  878. Wouldn't it be rational just to submit?

  879. Unbelief is intentional.

  880. Unbelief is irrational.

  881. Unbelief is also short-sighted.

  882. We have this little section there.

  883. In some ways, it really looks kind of out of place

  884. where Jesus is saying all these things

  885. and then you have this mother pops up

  886. and says,

  887. blessed is the woman who bore you

  888. and who nursed you.

  889. And then Jesus,

  890. you would have thought

  891. this nice little old woman here,

  892. he would have been nice to.

  893. But he very immediately basically says,

  894. no,

  895. blessed are those

  896. who hear the word of God

  897. and keep it.

  898. Because see,

  899. what she's done,

  900. I mean,

  901. she

  902. was not doing anything overtly evil.

  903. But it was her idea

  904. of what blessedness is.

  905. Her idea of blessedness

  906. was something innate about her.

  907. Something she did.

  908. She was able to accomplish.

  909. And that was a very prevalent idea

  910. in that society.

  911. Because if women were not able

  912. to bear children,

  913. they were really pariahs.

  914. They were outcasts.

  915. They were seen as rejects by God.

  916. And we've seen a lot of examples of that

  917. through the scriptures.

  918. So what her idea here,

  919. her glory,

  920. her value

  921. is found in a natural function

  922. of her life.

  923. Who she is as a woman

  924. and so forth.

  925. But what she really

  926. kind of reflects is

  927. because of our intentional

  928. rejection

  929. of submission to the king,

  930. in our irrational

  931. recreation

  932. of reality,

  933. reality,

  934. we still end up empty

  935. and we've got to find something

  936. to fill

  937. that void.

  938. And so we

  939. fill it,

  940. we try to,

  941. in vain,

  942. with many lesser things.

  943. We go on and read down

  944. a little farther in Romans,

  945. Romans 1,

  946. 23

  947. through 26

  948. or through 25,

  949. I mean,

  950. Paul writes,

  951. claiming to be wise,

  952. there's the,

  953. you know,

  954. there's all of this other,

  955. again,

  956. they became fools

  957. and exchanged

  958. the glory of God,

  959. the glory of the immortal God

  960. for images

  961. resembling mortal man

  962. and birds

  963. and animals

  964. and creeping things.

  965. Therefore,

  966. God gave them up

  967. to the lust of their hearts,

  968. to impurity,

  969. to the dishonoring

  970. of their bodies

  971. among themselves

  972. because

  973. they exchanged

  974. the truth

  975. of God

  976. for a lie

  977. and worshiped

  978. and served

  979. the creature

  980. rather than

  981. the creator.

  982. And that's what

  983. this woman was doing.

  984. All of a sudden now,

  985. her whole world,

  986. an idea of goodness

  987. and blessedness

  988. and identity

  989. was based on

  990. something that she could do,

  991. not on the

  992. immortal

  993. king

  994. himself.

  995. And so Jesus

  996. counters that

  997. blessedness

  998. and basically

  999. calls them

  1000. again

  1001. to

  1002. submission

  1003. to the king.

  1004. you know,

1005. it's not what you do

  1006. but it's

  1007. it's hearing the word

  1008. of God himself

  1009. and keeping it

  1010. and basically

  1011. it is bowing.

  1012. Blessedness

  1013. is bowing

  1014. to the true God

  1015. and not some

  1016. artificial thing

  1017. we've set up

  1018. for ourselves.

  1019. Blessedness

  1020. is not having

  1021. material resources.

  1022. It is not having

1023. a name well thought of.

  1024. It is not

  1025. accomplishing

  1026. great things.

  1027. There's so many

  1028. things that we

  1029. use to replace

  1030. and now we're

  1031. talking about us.

  1032. We use to replace

  1033. that sense

  1034. of blessedness.

  1035. You know,

  1036. we,

  1037. you know,

  1038. it is our job.

  1039. It is our work.

  1040. It is our

  1041. youthful

  1042. manly

  1043. vigor.

  1044. And those

  1045. of us

  1046. who have

  1047. chosen

  1048. that route

  1049. are

  1050. very disappointed

  1051. the farther

  1052. in life

  1053. we get.

  1054. Because,

  1055. you know,

  1056. we pursue

  1057. this great

  1058. vigor and

  1059. strength

  1060. and then

  1061. I've got to

  1062. have a hip

  1063. replaced

  1064. because it

  1065. doesn't work

  1066. anymore

  1067. and I can't

  1068. walk.

  1069. And then

  1070. you get

  1071. cancer.

  1072. And then

  1073. you go out

  1074. in the very

  1075. midst of

  1076. proving how

  1077. youthful

  1078. and vigorous

  1079. you are

  1080. on your

  1081. bicycle.

  1082. One morning

  1083. you have

  1084. a heart

  1085. attack.

  1086. And God

  1087. in heaven

  1088. just smiles

  1089. gently

  1090. saying,

  1091. you're barking

  1092. up the wrong

  1093. train.

  1094. This dog

  1095. won't

  1096. hunt.

  1097. Come to

  1098. the source

  1099. of real

  1100. life

  1101. and real

  1102. blessedness.

  1103. Because that

  1104. it's not

  1105. you.

  1106. It's not

  1107. what you

  1108. create.

  1109. It's not

  1110. what you

  1111. experience.

  1112. It's not

  1113. what you

  1114. accomplish.

  1115. It's who

  1116. you know.

  1117. It's

  1118. me.

  1119. Come

  1120. to the

  1121. king.

  1122. Unbelief

  1123. we see

  1124. here.

  1125. It's

  1126. finally

  1127. broken.

  1128. And I

  1129. will

  1130. go

  1131. through

  1132. this

  1133. quickly.

  1134. Jesus

  1135. gives

  1136. a

  1137. parable

  1138. basically

  1139. or a

  1140. sign.

  1141. He

  1142. says the

  1143. only sign

  1144. this evil

  1145. generation

  1146. is going

  1147. to get

  1148. is the

  1149. sign of

  1150. Jonah.

  1151. There's a

  1152. lot of

  1153. debate

  1154. about what

  1155. this is

  1156. but I

  1157. think it

  1158. really

  1159. points us

  1160. to two

  1161. things.

  1162. What do

  1163. we know

  1164. about

  1165. Jonah?

  1166. Jonah

  1167. was called

  1168. by God

  1169. to go

  1170. to an

  1171. evil

  1172. generation

  1173. in

  1174. Nineveh

  1175. to proclaim

  1176. the gospel.

  1177. In the

  1178. process he

  1179. was thrown

  1180. overboard

  1181. from this

  1182. boat

  1183. as dead.

  1184. These

  1185. were saved.

  1186. He was in

  1187. the belly

  1188. of a

  1189. whale

  1190. for three

  1191. of a

  1192. whale

  1193. not a

  1194. well.

  1195. Someplace

  1196. it's the

  1197. same

  1198. word.

  1199. For

  1200. three

  1201. days

  1202. he was

  1203. resurrected

  1204. on the

  1205. shore

  1206. went to

  1207. preach

  1208. to Nineveh

  1209. and they

  1210. repented

  1211. amazingly.

  1212. One of the

  1213. most wicked

  1214. people on

  1215. the face

  1216. of the

  1217. earth

  1218. repented.

  1219. And Jesus

  1220. said this

  1221. is the

  1222. sign.

  1223. And yes

  1224. we think

  1225. it is

  1226. pointing to

  1227. his

  1228. resurrection

  1229. but that

  1230. resurrection

  1231. says two

  1232. things to

  1233. me from

  1234. this

  1235. passage.

  1236. One is

  1237. the

  1238. resurrection

  1239. is the

  1240. ultimate

  1241. sign.

  1242. If

  1243. Christ

  1244. has been

  1245. raised from

  1246. the dead

  1247. there's no

  1248. more question.

  1249. about

  1250. who's

  1251. king.

  1252. We will

  1253. bow

  1254. before his

  1255. throne

  1256. at his

  1257. feet

  1258. one way

  1259. or the

  1260. other.

  1261. Whether you

  1262. believe it

  1263. or not.

  1264. Whether you

  1265. submit now

  1266. or not.

  1267. Jesus has

  1268. come and

  1269. because he

  1270. died

  1271. and it was

  1272. raised again

  1273. to life

  1274. and exalted

  1275. to the right

  1276. hand of the

  1277. father.

  1278. Everything

  1279. is about

  1280. him.

  1281. He

  1282. rightfully

  1283. declares

  1284. authority

  1285. over all

  1286. things.

  1287. But there's

  1288. something else.

  1289. It also

  1290. declares

  1291. God's

  1292. intentions.

  1293. sins.

  1294. Because what

  1295. he does

  1296. he sends

  1297. Jesus

  1298. to die.

  1299. He

  1300. sent

  1301. Jonah

  1302. to

  1303. Nineveh

  1304. because his

  1305. heart

  1306. longed

  1307. for the

  1308. Ninevites.

  1309. Why would

  1310. he send

  1311. Jonah

  1312. to the

  1313. Ninevites

  1314. unless he

  1315. wanted them

  1316. to repent

  1317. wanted them

  1318. to turn

  1319. from their

  1320. wickedness.

  1321. God

  1322. and now

  1323. we see

  1324. through the

  1325. resurrected

  1326. Christ

  1327. a much

  1328. more vivid

  1329. a much

  1330. greater

  1331. demonstration

  1332. of that

  1333. heart of

  1334. God for

  1335. an evil

  1336. generation.

  1337. That he

  1338. would give

  1339. his son

  1340. to perish

  1341. and then to

  1342. raise him

  1343. to life

  1344. again

  1345. to proclaim

  1346. the coming

  1347. of the

  1348. kingdom.

  1349. Why would

  1350. he do

  1351. that

  1352. if he

  1353. didn't

  1354. have the

  1355. heart

  1356. of a

  1357. father

  1358. who loved

  1359. his

  1360. creation

  1361. and longed

  1362. for

  1363. those

  1364. of us

  1365. to be

  1366. blessed

  1367. to have

  1368. it all.

  1369. And so

  1370. he calls

  1371. us to

  1372. faith

  1373. calls us

  1374. out of

  1375. our

  1376. unbelief

  1377. calls us

  1378. to come

  1379. to the

  1380. one

  1381. who can

  1382. indeed

  1383. give us

  1384. life

  1385. life that

  1386. is rich

  1387. and full.

  1388. And so

  1389. that's the

  1390. choice.

  1391. We either

  1392. come to

  1393. Jesus

  1394. in faith

  1395. we bow

  1396. before him

  1397. and when

  1398. we do

  1399. we will

  1400. know that

  1401. blessedness

  1402. that he

  1403. promises

  1404. but also

  1405. know this

  1406. we will

  1407. bow

  1408. either

  1409. voluntarily

  1410. or under

  1411. compulsion.

  1412. Jesus

  1413. comes as

  1414. the king

  1415. and he

  1416. allows no

  1417. rivals

  1418. us.

  1419. And so

  1420. he calls

  1421. us

  1422. to

  1423. repentance

  1424. to bow

  1425. of our

  1426. own

  1427. autonomy

  1428. to bow

  1429. to our

  1430. own

  1431. rule

  1432. to bow

  1433. to our

  1434. own

  1435. control

  1436. and

  1437. worship

  1438. at the

  1439. foot

  1440. of the

  1441. one

  1442. who loved

  1443. us

  1444. to his

  1445. own

  1446. death.

  1447. It

  1448. sounds

  1449. rational

  1450. to me

  1451. why would

  1452. we not

  1453. do that?

  1454. let's

  1455. pray.

  1456. Oh Lord

  1457. Jesus

  1458. our hearts

  1459. are hard

  1460. we need

  1461. you to

  1462. work

  1463. would you

  1464. help us

  1465. in our

  1466. unbelief?

  1467. You

  1468. promised

  1469. that as

  1470. we come

  1471. to the

  1472. father

  1473. that father

  1474. you would

  1475. give your

  1476. holy spirit

  1477. you would

  1478. give him

  1479. great

  1480. abundance

  1481. we need

  1482. him

  1483. so would

  1484. you come

  1485. turn our

  1486. hard hearts

  1487. and hearts

  1488. that believe

  1489. that we

  1490. might know

  1491. the riches

  1492. and the

  1493. wealth

  1494. of your

  1495. kingdom

  1496. we pray
