  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. If you have your Bibles with you, please open them up to Luke chapter 11.

    Luke 11 chapter mention

  4. We'll be finishing up this chapter today, starting in verse 37, going through the end of the chapter.

  5. If you don't have a Bible, it'll also be on the screen behind me.

  6. And we have deacons who will be going around to see if you're playing on Facebook or if you're listening to the sermon.

  7. There's going to be a lot of similarities between the sermon this week and the sermon last week for several reasons that I'll go into.

  8. So I'm going to dive right in and just read the text.

  9. The primary difference is Jesus is speaking to the Pharisees and lawyers this week.

  10. And while we might see that as him tailoring his message to the leadership of the church,

  11. I think we're going to find out today that there's a lot of it that has to do with all of us.

  12. So please read with me, beginning in Luke chapter 11, verse 37.

    Luke 11:37

  13. While Jesus was speaking, a Pharisee asked him to dine with him.

  14. So he went in and reclined at table.

  15. Now the Pharisee was astonished to see that he did not first wash before dinner.

  16. And the Lord said to him,

  17. Now you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside you're full of greed and wickedness.

  18. You fools!

  19. Did not he who made the outside of everything make the inside also?

  20. But give his alms those things that are within, and behold, everything is clean for you.

  21. But woe to you, Pharisees, for you tithe mint and rue and every herb and neglect justice and the love of God.

  22. These you ought to have done without neglecting the others.

  23. And woe to you, Pharisees, for you love the best seat in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces.

  24. Woe to you, for you are like unmarked graves, and people walk over them without knowing it.

  25. And one of the lawyers said, Hold on a minute, teacher, in saying these things, you're insulting us also.

  26. And Jesus said, Yeah, woe to you, lawyers, also.

  27. For you load people with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers.

  28. Woe to you, for you build the tombs of the prophets whom your fathers killed.

  29. So you are witnesses, and you consent to the deeds of your fathers, for they killed them, and you build their tombs.

  30. Therefore, also, the wisdom of God said, or in God's wisdom, he said, I'll send them prophets and apostles,

  31. some of whom they will kill and persecute, so that the blood of all the prophets shed from the foundation of the world

  32. may be charged against this generation, from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah,

  33. who perished between the altar and the sanctuary.

  34. Yes, I tell you, it will be required of this generation.

  35. Woe to you, lawyers, for you have taken away the key of knowledge.

  36. You did not enter yourselves, and you hindered those who were entering.

  37. And as he went away from there, the scribes and the Pharisees began to press him hard

  38. and to provoke him to speak about many things, lying in wait for him,

  39. to catch him in between something he might say.

  40. Pray with me, please.

  41. Father, these are difficult words for us, and as we explore them more this morning,

  42. we pray for your mercy and your grace.

  43. Send your Holy Spirit to illumine our hearts and our minds

  44. to know what we are to do with a text like this.

  45. I pray that you would be with the words of my mouth

  46. and the meditation of all of our hearts.

  47. They would be pleasing unto you.

  48. And most of all, that the name of your son, Jesus, would be made great

  49. and that we would know more of your love for us today than we did yesterday.

  50. For the sake of our Savior, King Jesus, amen.

  51. So last week, Ron spoke on many things about this generation of people

  52. who Jesus said, this is going to fall on you.

  53. And one of the bigger deals was back at the beginning in 1114

  54. when Jesus cast a demon out of a man

  55. and the people accused Jesus potentially of doing this because of Beelzebul

  56. and saying he was in cahoots with the devil.

  57. Pretty unfair accusation, and Jesus logically stepped through it with them,

  58. saying, well, if that's the case, how did your sons do it?

  59. What is actually happening here is the kingdom of God has come present, is there.

  60. If we read in the book of Matthew, it says the son of David is here,

  61. the Messiah, the very promised one, is here.

  62. And people are casting division in that.

  63. They're not unifying around the long-promised Savior.

  64. Instead, they're becoming divided by it, and Jesus sees it happening.

  65. And he says to the crowd, look, if you're not with me, you're against me.

  66. There's no other place to be.

  67. And he calls them a wicked generation.

  68. And this wicked generation is represented by these leaders

  69. that Jesus spent several verses here discussing the realities

  70. of who they are in light of what the gospel says.

  71. And we're going to dive right in this morning.

  72. The first point in your bulletin that you see there is called response versus rebuke.

  73. And the reason that I say that is because the gospel enables response,

  74. and ignoring the gospel demands rebuke.

  75. And the gospel is not something that magically started when Jesus came to earth.

  76. God's been on about this in the whole Bible to this point.

  77. We see the covenant starting with the covenant with Adam,

  78. and then the covenant with Noah, and then with Abraham,

  79. and then with Moses, and then with David.

  80. And we think that somehow these covenants get replaced by each other.

  81. But in reality, God is building a layer cake of covenants

  82. where he knows that we aren't fulfilling our end of it.

  83. And ultimately, he makes that promise in Jeremiah of the new covenant

  84. that will be in the blood of the Messiah.

  85. And so, here he is.

  86. And in each of these terms, God's only requirement of his people

  87. is that they embrace his covenant from the heart.

  88. That we will see him for who he is,

  89. and know who we are,

  90. and therefore act accordingly.

  91. So, we see with the Pharisees that that's not necessarily what's going on.

  92. And he jumps right into it with rebuke number one there in verse 38.

  93. The Pharisee was astonished to see that he did not first wash before dinner.

  94. And this is not a matter of hygienic washing.

  95. This wasn't a question of did Jesus wash his hands.

  96. What was going on here is that the Pharisees required an extra-biblical set of rituals

  97. for people to do before they ate.

  98. And please don't doubt the zealousy of these men.

  99. These Pharisees were trying to protect what they thought was piety

  100. and what they thought was humility in front of God.

  101. And yet the God-man is sitting there with them,

  102. and he doesn't wash his hands as the beginning of a series of terrible things

  103. that you don't want said about you by, certainly not by Jesus.

  104. And he moves directly to rebuke number two, neglect.

  105. In verse 42.

  106. Rebuke number three, pride.

  107. And rebuke number four, death.

  108. So going back to the washing, Jesus says,

  109. You fools, didn't he who make the outside make the inside also?

  110. Give alms within, and what comes out of you will surely match that.

  111. Don't make things right on the outside.

  112. There's no good there.

  113. If you were truly embracing the covenant from the heart,

  114. which you as the leaders of the church

  115. and the people who are teaching the people of God

  116. how to live with him and live with each other,

  117. you would know that if you were to do that within,

  118. it would certainly spread to without.

  119. And rebuke number two, the neglect.

  120. Woe to you Pharisees, for you tithe mint and rue and every herb,

  121. and yet you neglect justice and the love of God.

  122. These you ought to have done.

  123. You should have done justice and the love of God

  124. without neglecting the others.

  125. Leviticus says, yeah, you've got to tithe that stuff.

  126. But this is going to be the crux of our whole passage

  127. because essentially what Jesus is saying is

  128. the thing that he said to the gentleman earlier

  129. in Luke 9, I believe.

  130. All of the law and the prophets can be summarized

  131. in the reality of loving your neighbor as yourself

  132. and loving God with all of your heart

  133. and your soul and mind.

  134. And what Jesus is saying is

  135. you're tithing mint and herbs and rue

  136. and you're denying love for other people

  137. and you're denying love for God.

  138. We see this pictured in Micah 6.8

  139. where it says that,

  140. for he's shown you, O man, what is good

  141. and what does the Lord require of you

  142. but to do justly and to love mercy

  143. and to walk humbly with your God.

  144. I'm going to look up my other verse too

  145. because it seems that we don't have those on the slides.

  146. Colossians 3.

  147. We're in sword drills now.

  148. Somebody can beat me there.

  149. Start reading Colossians 3.

  150. There we go.

  151. Study Bibles are great.

  152. They're just long.

  153. Colossians 3 starting in verse 12.

  154. Put on then as God's chosen ones

  155. holy and beloved compassionate hearts,

  156. kindness, humility, meekness, patience,

  157. bearing with one another

  158. and if one has a complaint against another,

  159. forgiving each other as the Lord's forgiven you.

  160. That's how you're supposed to forgive.

  161. And above all these things,

  162. put on love which binds everything together

  163. in perfect harmony.

  164. Justice in the time of Micah

  165. who had great success

  166. preaching and speaking

  167. and was able to turn the king's heart

  168. toward the Lord

  169. was the idea of the people

  170. who were in control

  171. looking out for those who had been oppressed,

  172. looking out for those who were being suppressed.

  173. We call it in our core values

  174. looking out for the lost

  175. and the lonely

  176. and the littlest

  177. and the left out.

  178. That's the role of these people

  179. but they're not doing that.

  180. The Pharisees aren't doing that.

  181. Instead, we move to rebuke number three

  182. starting in verse 43.

  183. Woe to you Pharisees

  184. for you love the best seat in the synagogues

  185. and greetings in the marketplace.

  186. That means that they like to go

  187. and sit in the front of the synagogue

  188. and be seen.

  189. They like to see

  190. and they like to have other people

  191. to know where they were.

  192. And the greetings in the marketplace

  193. wasn't a simple,

  194. hey, how you doing?

  195. It's good to see you today, pastor.

  196. It was a ritualistic,

  197. extra-biblical thing

  198. that they made people do.

  199. They had to stop

  200. and go through an entire rite with them

  201. publicly

  202. just so they could be seen.

  203. Scratch that itch of pride.

  204. And then he bookends it

  205. with the worst woe, number four.

  206. For you are like unmarked graves

  207. and people walk over them

  208. without knowing it.

  209. In the beginning,

  210. they had accused Jesus

  211. because he didn't wash his hands

  212. and Jesus is saying,

  213. look, you're an unmarked grave.

  214. And the significance of that

  215. to this culture

  216. is that touching anything dead

  217. or being around anything dead

  218. made you ceremonially unclean

  219. for seven days.

  220. And Jesus is saying,

  221. not only are you doing that to people,

  222. but they don't know

  223. you're doing it to people.

  224. In fact, they think

  225. they're approaching

  226. the leaders of the church,

  227. the leaders of the people of God,

  228. who are giving them good information.

  229. But you're defiling them.

  230. And while they're ceremonially unclean,

  231. you're spewing more

  232. of what you're spewing at them,

  233. more of the venom that you have.

  234. And you're leading them to death.

  235. And that's a terrible thought

  236. for people who are supposed to be

  237. the ones leading people to life.

  238. And all four of these rebukes

  239. center on the title of this sermon.

  240. The Pharisees are majoring on the minors.

  241. They're not paying attention

  242. to the heart of what the covenant is

  243. and the heart of what the gospel is.

  244. And instead, they're piling on to people.

  245. And we'll see more of that in a minute

  246. with the scribes.

  247. I abhor abortion

  248. with every fiber of my being.

  249. Yet I was raised,

  250. and I think many Gen Xers like me

  251. were raised in a time

  252. where I was not taught very well

  253. how to think about abortion.

  254. I was taught a lot of answers

  255. that became more ideology

  256. than they became interacting

  257. with the gospel

  258. on a terrible, heartbreaking issue.

  259. It became politicized,

  260. which is one of the problems, I think.

  261. And I'm not condemning any people

  262. in my past.

  263. I'm saying the net effect

  264. of that on me

  265. was that I looked at abortion

  266. as a set of things

  267. that were an ideology

  268. rather than the heartbreaking reality

  269. of a life being lost.

  270. and the heartbreaking reality

  271. of someone

  272. who could have been going

  273. through the worst circumstances.

  274. Instead, she's just kind of condemned

  275. and lost and forgotten about.

  276. And open and public displays

  277. of condemning that

  278. without the other side of that

  279. being the compassionate

  280. coming toward those people

  281. in love,

  282. men and women

  283. who would have found themselves

  284. in that situation.

  285. And I can't help but think

  286. that that's happening again

  287. with a different issue now,

  288. especially as I deal

  289. and speak with the youth on it.

  290. Emily and I,

  291. and the boys,

  292. well, three boys at the time,

  293. moved to St. Louis

  294. in the August of 2012.

  295. And a few things happened

  296. while we were living there,

  297. none bigger than,

  298. on August 9th,

  299. Michael Brown was shot

  300. by a police officer

  301. and killed.

  302. And I remember walking into work,

  303. I worked full-time for the seminary,

  304. and looking at a guy

  305. that I worked with

  306. and saying,

  307. hey, this is going to end up

  308. being a really big deal.

  309. And he looked at me

  310. and was like,

  311. no, this happens all the time.

  312. And I said,

  313. yeah,

  314. I think this is going to end up

  315. being a really big deal

  316. and I didn't know why.

  317. And that was the beginning

  318. of me walking

  319. for the rest of the time

  320. we lived there

  321. with African-American brothers

  322. and sisters,

  323. many of whom were in the PCA,

  324. through a situation

  325. that I kind of thought

  326. I knew about.

  327. Most of my friends growing up

  328. were African-American.

  329. I'd seen a few things

  330. being in that situation.

  331. But what I was experiencing there

  332. was something different

  333. because there was

  334. some kind of a heart change

  335. that was going on

  336. inside of me

  337. toward the issue.

  338. And for the first time

  339. in my life,

  340. I truly began

  341. to understand

  342. my neglect

  343. and my pride

  344. toward the issue

  345. of racial reconciliation

  346. and of systematic injustice

  347. and things like that.

  348. And really what Jesus

  349. is talking about here

  350. is that,

  351. is the response to that,

  352. not the conclusions

  353. we draw from that.

  354. And I saw that my response

  355. was really steeped

  356. in an ideology

  357. that I'd either developed

  358. or been taught,

  359. culturally, personally,

  360. I don't know.

  361. And yet here I was

  362. face to face

  363. with believers

  364. who I knew

  365. and who I trusted

  366. who were telling me things

  367. that were wholly other

  368. than what I had ever experienced

  369. or known.

  370. and my heart

  371. began to break

  372. because of how much sin

  373. I saw inside of myself

  374. in that situation.

  375. As God's people,

  376. we are to be rushing

  377. to those situations

  378. and leading the way,

  379. not in solving

  380. all of the problems

  381. because that's not

  382. what we can do

  383. and that's not

  384. what God calls us to do

  385. but he calls us

  386. to rush to the situations

  387. with compassion

  388. and with mercy

  389. and with patience

  390. and with understanding

  391. and with love.

  392. All of those things

  393. I read that Paul spoke

  394. of in Colossians.

  395. Not to mention

  396. the historical reality

  397. of who God's people

  398. are in the earth.

  399. We're meant to be

  400. a taste of the kingdom

  401. for everybody

  402. that comes in contact

  403. with us.

  404. And a lot of the time

  405. we're judged

  406. on that first thing

  407. that happens,

  408. that response.

  409. How do we respond?

  410. And that's where

  411. I felt condemned

  412. because my first response

  413. is always a knee-jerk thing

  414. that's not very indicative

  415. of what I should be rushing to.

  416. I rush to my ideology

  417. and I don't rush

  418. to the gospel.

  419. I don't rush

  420. to consider

  421. how might God

  422. be working

  423. in this situation.

  424. What is broken?

  425. What is not broken?

  426. How do I engage

  427. with that

  428. trusting

  429. that my role

  430. is not to be the fixer

  431. or to hold on

  432. too tightly

  433. to things

  434. that I don't want

  435. to change

  436. but it's actually

  437. just to be present

  438. and to act

  439. like a Christian

  440. the way that God

  441. has called me

  442. to be.

  443. And don't hear

  444. what I'm not saying.

  445. I'm not discussing

  446. conclusions.

  447. I'm discussing

  448. initial response.

  449. And we can see

  450. the hearts

  451. of the Pharisees

  452. in this situation

  453. not responding

  454. but instead

  455. deserving rebuke.

  456. And the gospel

  457. of Jesus Christ

  458. lets me know

  459. where I stand

  460. as a humble sinner

  461. completely in need

  462. of saving.

  463. And I can't stand here

  464. and bind anyone's conscience

  465. based upon conclusions

  466. or outcomes.

  467. Can't do that.

  468. But I can absolutely

  469. point to a scripture

  470. that demands

  471. for you

  472. and me

  473. to humbly

  474. and patiently

  475. and compassionately

  476. and lovingly

  477. seek out

  478. and to listen

  479. to our brothers

  480. and sisters

  481. and to listen

  482. to people

  483. of all sorts

  484. of races

  485. because we are

  486. the ones

  487. who are the dominant

  488. culture

  489. not differently

  490. than what Micah

  491. was speaking to.

  492. And it's important

  493. that we understand

  494. as the church

  495. our responsibility

  496. to be out

  497. in front of that.

  498. Our posture

  499. is what is at stake

  500. well before the outcome

  501. of any of these situations.

  502. And defensiveness

  503. and self-preservationist motives

  504. are exactly

  505. what Jesus

  506. is condemning here.

  507. And this isn't lost

  508. on the audience

  509. as we see

  510. when we move on

  511. to the lawyers

  512. who said,

  513. hey man

  514. wait a second

  515. you're talking about them

  516. we're the ones

  517. who supply them

  518. with a lot

  519. of our information

  520. so what you're saying

  521. you're talking about us too

  522. slow down buddy

  523. we invited you to dinner.

  524. Actually

  525. the verb

  526. or the noun there

  527. would suggest

  528. it was earlier

  529. in the day meal

  530. but anyway

  531. we invited you

  532. to eat with us.

  533. And Jesus starts

  534. levying some woes

  535. on them

  536. and your second point

  537. there in the outline

  538. is repentance

  539. versus reaction.

  540. what does being faced

  541. with the reality

  542. of the gospel

  543. cause you to rush to?

  544. Does it prick your heart

  545. in a way

  546. that would

  547. cause you

  548. to desire

  549. to repent

  550. and even seek out

  551. what those things are

  552. to repent of?

  553. Or do we just

  554. viscerally react?

  555. Let's see what

  556. the lawyers did

  557. lawyers, scribes

  558. they studied the law

  559. they advised the Pharisees

  560. ultimately they're the ones

  561. who killed Jesus.

  562. Woe number one

  563. was unnecessary burdens

  564. we see in verse 46.

  565. What are you lawyers also

  566. for you load people

  567. with burdens

  568. hard to bear

  569. and you yourselves

  570. don't touch the burdens

  571. with one of your fingers.

  572. It was interesting

  573. to read different commentators

  574. discuss this

  575. because they're discussing

  576. a couple of different things.

  577. One

  578. they're talking

  579. about several things

  580. that they add on

  581. to the requirements

  582. of the law

  583. and the gospel

  584. I mean I'm sorry

  585. the law

  586. and

  587. two things

  588. are probably happening

  589. one

  590. the people can't

  591. meet the requirements

  592. that they're adding

  593. they're burdening the people

  594. and the people

  595. have no ability

  596. to rise to it

  597. and so

  598. and it's hopeless

  599. because if you can't

  600. rise to it

  601. there's no other way

  602. these are the people

  603. who are telling you

  604. the way to God

  605. and so if you can't

  606. rise to that

  607. and the other part

  608. of that is

  609. they weren't even

  610. doing it themselves

  611. and they didn't care

  612. it was hypocritical

  613. of them

  614. and Jesus

  615. is pointing that out

  616. saying this is

  617. this is not right

  618. this is not good

  619. so going back

  620. to what he said

  621. to the Pharisees

  622. in place of justice

  623. and mercy

  624. you're actually

  625. levying

  626. undue burden

  627. and hypocrisy

  628. on these people

  629. stay with me

  630. for these next couple

  631. because they're

  632. they're a little bit

  633. it was difficult to read

  634. I'm sure it was difficult

  635. to hear

  636. and I'll try

  637. to explain it

  638. a little bit

  639. because it's

  640. it's very important

  641. what Jesus was saying

  642. the second woe

  643. was the woe

  644. of the tombs

  645. verses 47

  646. and 48

  647. woe to you

  648. for you build

  649. the tombs

  650. of the prophets

  651. whom your fathers

  652. killed

  653. so your witnesses

  654. and you consent

  655. to the deeds

  656. of your fathers

  657. for they killed them

  658. and you built

  659. their tombs

  660. these people

  661. obviously didn't

  662. kill the prophets

  663. what he's speaking

  664. of there

  665. is their complicit

  666. response

  667. to what

  668. their fathers

  669. had done

  670. their motivations

  671. show their collusion

  672. and much like

  673. he does

  674. in Matthew 5

  675. when we see

  676. Jesus talking

  677. about

  678. if you even

  679. think

  680. sexually

  681. about a woman

  682. you have

  683. committed adultery

  684. and even

  685. if you

  686. think

  687. hateful thoughts

  688. about your brother

  689. you've committed

  690. murder

  691. this is another

  692. floor and ceiling

  693. type of a thing

  694. they would say

  695. well

  696. they killed him

  697. back several hundred

  698. years ago

  699. this didn't have

  700. anything to do

  701. with us

  702. and Jesus is saying

  703. no you're not

  704. you're missing the point

  705. you are complicit

  706. in this

  707. willingly complicit

  708. in this

  709. so

  710. verses 49

  711. and 51

  712. this will be more

  713. of an explanatory

  714. aside

  715. but therefore

  716. also

  717. the wisdom

  718. of God

  719. said

  720. the NIV

  721. I really like

  722. there

  723. it said

  724. God in his

  725. wisdom

  726. said

  727. that

  728. I lost

  729. myself

  730. there

  731. I will send

  732. the prophets

  733. and apostles

  734. some of whom

  735. they will kill

  736. and persecute

  737. so this is part

  738. of God's plan

  739. that this is

  740. going to happen

  741. so that the

  742. blood of all

  743. the prophets

  744. shed from the

  745. foundation of the

  746. world may be

  747. charged against

  748. you guys

  749. this generation

  750. from the blood

  751. of Abel

  752. who we don't

  753. usually think

  754. about as a

  755. prophet

  756. but he was

  757. someone who

  758. embraced love

  759. for God

  760. we could say

  761. embraced the

  762. covenant

  763. from the

  764. heart

  765. to Zechariah

  766. and Zechariah

  767. is a little bit

  768. hard to pin down

  769. but most likely

  770. if you have a

  771. study Bible

  772. in front of you

  773. you'll look at

  774. the note there

  775. most likely

  776. it was Zechariah

  777. in 2 Chronicles

  778. which in the

  779. Hebrew Bible

  780. means that

  781. Jesus was laying

  782. out for them

  783. Abel

  784. in the beginning

  785. of the Hebrew

  786. Bible

  787. all the way

  788. to Zechariah

  789. at the end

  790. of the Hebrew

  791. Bible

  792. you're responsible

  793. for all of this

  794. this blood

  795. is on you

  796. and woe number

  797. three

  798. which is

  799. going again

  800. back to

  801. similar

  802. to the

  803. final rebuke

  804. against the

  805. Pharisees

  806. with the

  807. unmarked graves

  808. verse 52

  809. woe to you

  810. lawyers

  811. for you've

  812. taken away

  813. the key

  814. of knowledge

  815. you did

  816. not enter

  817. yourselves

  818. and you

  819. hindered

  820. those who

  821. were

  822. entering

  823. key of

  824. knowledge

  825. that idea

  826. that they

  827. had the

  828. key

  829. as the

  830. teachers

  831. of the

  832. law

  833. and the

  834. ones who

  835. review

  836. and translate

  837. and advise

  838. on the

  839. law

  840. that they

  841. never even

  842. knew it

  843. themselves

  844. and not only

  845. that but

  846. because of

  847. what he said

  848. at the

  849. beginning

  850. that they

  851. were burdening

  852. unnecessarily

  853. the people

  854. of Israel

  855. God's chosen

  856. people with

  857. all of these

  858. other things

  859. was hindering

  860. them from

  861. getting inside

  862. as well

  863. they didn't

  864. have the

  865. key

  866. you don't

  867. have the

  868. key

  869. and you're

  870. keeping other

  871. people who

  872. want to go

  873. in from

  874. going in

  875. pretty harsh

  876. stuff

  877. and then we

  878. see in

  879. 53 and

  880. 54

  881. what reaction

  882. looks like

  883. because in

  884. repentance

  885. you hear

  886. that and

  887. tear your

  888. clothes

  889. right

  890. lay in

  891. sackcloth

  892. and ashes

  893. like the

  894. Ninevites

  895. and as

  896. Jesus alluded

  897. to in the

  898. sign of

  899. Jonah

  900. you realize

  901. who you

  902. are

  903. how you've

  904. acted

  905. before a

  906. holy God

  907. how much

  908. more so

  909. for the

  910. people who

  911. were supposed

  912. to be the

  913. leaders

  914. but they

  915. don't

  916. repent

  917. they react

  918. and this

  919. language

  920. is so

  921. strong in

  922. the original

  923. language that

  924. it's hard to

  925. catch in

  926. English but I

  927. think in

  928. English it's

  929. pretty strong

  930. also

  931. as he went

  932. away from

  933. there the

  934. scribes and

  935. Pharisees began

  936. to press him

  937. hard and to

  938. provoke him to

  939. speak about many

  940. things lying in

  941. wait for him to

  942. catch him in

  943. something that he

  944. might say and

  945. as I was reading

  946. this the visual

  947. image I had was

  948. someone trying to

  949. leave and like a

  950. pack of dogs

  951. circling him and

  952. foaming at the

  953. mouth and

  954. seething and

  955. angrily going

  956. at Jesus

  957. trying to get

  958. him to show

  959. that he's not

  960. who he's claiming

  961. to be

  962. because if he's

  963. who he's claiming

  964. to be

  965. who are they

  966. there are many

  967. difficult things

  968. facing us as the

  969. church of Jesus

  970. Christ today

  971. and we

  972. we can't help

  973. but look and

  974. see that we

  975. stand in the

  976. midst of some

  977. kind of a

  978. transition in our

  979. country and it's

  980. scary to think

  981. that the things

  982. that were might

  983. not be the

  984. things that are

  985. or the things

  986. that will be

  987. and we clutch

  988. and we grasp

  989. and that's that's

  990. my I shouldn't

  991. lay that on you

  992. that can be my

  993. reaction

  994. to what's

  995. happening

  996. and what's

  997. going on

  998. we think of

  999. the immigrants

  1000. from Syria

  1001. and from Haiti

  1002. from the

  1003. Dominican Republic

  1004. from Cuba

  1005. from Central

  1006. and South

  1007. America

  1008. from other

  1009. places

  1010. we have been

  1011. in war

  1012. at war

  1013. for a long

  1014. time in one

  1015. place and now

  1016. we're scared

  1017. of a war

  1018. starting in

  1019. another place

  1020. potentially

  1021. and then

  1022. we even

  1023. think about

  1024. in our

  1025. recreation

  1026. which is going

  1027. to be interesting

  1028. to see today

  1029. how many players

  1030. if not whole

  1031. teams in the NFL

  1032. are going to

  1033. respond to the

  1034. call from many

  1035. for them to be

  1036. silenced

  1037. and the question

  1038. that faces us

  1039. is what about

  1040. us

  1041. what about you

  1042. and what about

  1043. me

  1044. the church

  1045. the people

  1046. of God

  1047. we're called

  1048. to lead

  1049. in these

  1050. things

  1051. we're not

  1052. called to sit

  1053. back and wait

  1054. for others

  1055. to respond

  1056. and then

  1057. see how it

  1058. goes

  1059. we're to

  1060. lead

  1061. so that

  1062. others

  1063. can have

  1064. a taste

  1065. of the

  1066. kingdom

  1067. do we

  1068. begin

  1069. to think

  1070. about

  1071. situations

  1072. with

  1073. compassion

  1074. and with

  1075. mercy

  1076. with a

  1077. desire

  1078. and a

  1079. passion

  1080. for justice

  1081. and patience

  1082. and kindness

  1083. and loving

  1084. do we

  1085. pray

  1086. do we

  1087. care

  1088. to

  1089. and if

  1090. we do

  1091. do we

  1092. do we

  1093. pray

  1094. with

  1095. passion

  1096. and

  1097. heartbreak

  1098. for those

  1099. who stand

  1100. to suffer

  1101. greatly

  1102. or do we

  1103. begin

  1104. with

  1105. ideology

  1106. do we

  1107. rush out

  1108. with bleeding

  1109. hearts

  1110. to seek

  1111. a quick

  1112. fix

  1113. until the

  1114. next thing

  1115. flashes across

  1116. the news

  1117. screen

  1118. that we

  1119. need to

  1120. go

  1121. and be

  1122. championing

  1123. that next

  1124. cause

  1125. do we

  1126. react

  1127. with

  1128. condemnation

  1129. and premise

  1130. coldness

  1131. and a

  1132. lack of

  1133. willingness

  1134. to engage

  1135. or do we

  1136. understand

  1137. who we

  1138. are

  1139. at the

  1140. foot of

  1141. the cross

  1142. Jesus

  1143. calls

  1144. I think

  1145. this is

  1146. in your

  1147. bulletin

  1148. I'm not

  1149. sure

  1150. Jesus

  1151. calls his

  1152. followers

  1153. to examine

  1154. their heart

  1155. motivations

  1156. at every

  1157. turn

  1158. and the

  1159. question for

  1160. us is

  1161. when we

  1162. lead

  1163. do we

  1164. follow

  1165. my wife

  1166. looked at me

  1167. cross-eyed

  1168. when I told

  1169. her that was

  1170. going to be

  1171. in the

  1172. bulletin

  1173. and here's

  1174. what I

  1175. meant by

  1176. that

  1177. all of

  1178. our

  1179. situations

  1180. are

  1181. impossible

  1182. whether we

  1183. levy our

  1184. ideology on

  1185. others

  1186. as was done

  1187. by the

  1188. Pharisees

  1189. and the

  1190. scribes

  1191. or we

  1192. have

  1193. ideology

  1194. of others

  1195. levied

  1196. upon us

  1197. both of

  1198. those

  1199. situations

  1200. they create

  1201. impossible

  1202. outcomes

  1203. and completely

  1204. hopeless

  1205. outcomes

  1206. which is

  1207. probably the

  1208. real tragedy

  1209. that we

  1210. read in

  1211. this passage

  1212. that the

  1213. people could

  1214. not meet

  1215. these

  1216. standards

  1217. and there

  1218. was no

  1219. hope for

  1220. them

  1221. and Jesus

  1222. also presents

  1223. us with an

  1224. impossible

  1225. outcome

  1226. if we're

  1227. left to

  1228. ourselves

  1229. but the

  1230. difference is

  1231. that he

  1232. covers the

  1233. impossibilities

  1234. we are

  1235. unable to

  1236. respond in

  1237. and of

  1238. ourselves

  1239. because it's

  1240. not natural

  1241. to be inclined

  1242. to the

  1243. things of

  1244. God

  1245. and we're

  1246. not able

  1247. to repent

  1248. not because

  1249. just because

  1250. we lack

  1251. the

  1252. inclination

  1253. but we

  1254. also don't

  1255. have the

  1256. ability

  1257. and that's

  1258. the beauty

  1259. of where

  1260. we are

  1261. as the

  1262. people of

  1263. God

  1264. when found

  1265. in Christ

  1266. because through

  1267. Jesus

  1268. who's our

  1269. perfect

  1270. covenant

  1271. representative

  1272. our

  1273. Savior

  1274. our God

  1275. the one

  1276. through whom

  1277. all things

  1278. have been

  1279. made

  1280. when he

  1281. condescends

  1282. to sinners

  1283. like me

  1284. and sinners

  1285. like you

  1286. we have

  1287. the ability

  1288. to do

  1289. these things

  1290. not because

  1291. suddenly we

  1292. want to

  1293. but because

  1294. he brings

  1295. that about

  1296. in us

  1297. and in

  1298. our hearts

  1299. he sends

  1300. down

  1301. closely to

  1302. us

  1303. and he

  1304. says

  1305. follow me

  1306. and when

  1307. you follow

  1308. me

  1309. I'm going

  1310. to give

  1311. you the

  1312. ability

  1313. to follow

  1314. me

  1315. how can

  1316. this not

  1317. humble us

  1318. as the

  1319. people of

  1320. God

  1321. how can

  1322. this not

  1323. drive us

  1324. to lead

  1325. how can

  1326. this not

  1327. spur

  1328. conversations

  1329. of the

  1330. gospel

  1331. and the

  1332. goodness

  1333. of the

  1334. grace

  1335. of Jesus

  1336. Christ

  1337. with everyone

  1338. around us

  1339. how can

  1340. our hearts

  1341. not be

  1342. pricked

  1343. at signs

  1344. of injustice

  1345. at signs

  1346. of people

  1347. running to

  1348. ideology

  1349. for comfort

  1350. passionately

  1351. screaming

  1352. about politics

  1353. or anything

  1354. other than

  1355. the love

  1356. of Jesus

  1357. Christ

  1358. and so

  1359. when we're

  1360. out there

  1361. leading with

  1362. those

  1363. conversations

  1364. that are

  1365. put on

  1366. our hearts

  1367. because of

  1368. the Holy

  1369. Spirit

  1370. that's coming

  1371. from both

  1372. the Father

  1373. who loves

  1374. us

  1375. and his

  1376. Son

  1377. who is

  1378. our King

  1379. and Savior

  1380. the Holy

  1381. Spirit is

  1382. driving us

  1383. into those

  1384. situations

  1385. and we

  1386. don't have

  1387. to be

  1388. afraid

  1389. you don't

  1390. look dumb

  1391. when you

  1392. walk into

  1393. a situation

  1394. because it's

  1395. not politically

  1396. right where

  1397. we live

  1398. you're part

  1399. of the

  1400. kingdom of

  1401. God

  1402. as God's

  1403. people

  1404. we lead

  1405. in those

  1406. situations

  1407. and when

  1408. we lead

  1409. in those

  1410. situations

  1411. by following

  1412. Jesus

  1413. that's when

  1414. reconciliation

  1415. happens

  1416. not because

  1417. we bring it

  1418. about

  1419. but because

  1420. we're willing

  1421. to be

  1422. there

  1423. and be

  1424. patient

  1425. to respond

  1426. and to

  1427. repent

  1428. we're known

  1429. into the

  1430. deepest parts

  1431. of our

  1432. being

  1433. by a

  1434. God

  1435. who still

  1436. loved us

  1437. and pursued

  1438. us while

  1439. we were yet

  1440. sinners

  1441. Christ died

  1442. for us

  1443. we don't

  1444. have to be

  1445. afraid of

  1446. that

  1447. so I

  1448. want to

  1449. encourage us

  1450. as we

  1451. leave today

  1452. after our

  1453. 15 minute or

  1454. so

  1455. congregational

  1456. meeting

  1457. I want to

  1458. encourage us

  1459. to consider

  1460. how do we

  1461. respond

  1462. and how do

  1463. we repent

  1464. because we

  1465. have a

  1466. father who

  1467. loves us

  1468. very very

  1469. much

  1470. and his

  1471. son stands

  1472. there on

  1473. our behalf

  1474. interceding

  1475. for us

  1476. and we're

  1477. his church

  1478. we're the

  1479. taste of

  1480. his kingdom

  1481. here on

  1482. earth

  1483. and we're

  1484. called to

  1485. do that

  1486. pray with

  1487. me please

  1488. father we're

  1489. grateful for

  1490. your love

  1491. and your

  1492. care for

  1493. us

  1494. we're

  1495. grateful for

  1496. the

  1497. responsibilities

  1498. you put

  1499. on us

  1500. as your

  1501. people

  1502. not because

  1503. we can rise

  1504. to the

  1505. challenge

  1506. and not

  1507. because we're

  1508. worthy of

  1509. them

  1510. but because

  1511. you're not

  1512. going to

  1513. leave us

  1514. or forsake

  1515. us

  1516. it's a joy

  1517. to respond

  1518. to your

  1519. Holy Spirit

  1520. it's a joy

  1521. to repent

  1522. because we

  1523. know how

  1524. much you

  1525. love us

  1526. help us

  1527. to look

  1528. to your

  1529. son

  1530. help us

  1531. to lead

  1532. as your

  1533. church

  1534. in the

  1535. world

  1536. in his

  1537. great name
