  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. If you'll turn with me this morning to Luke chapter 12, Luke 12.

    Luke 12 chapter mention

  5. We've heard Jesus address the Pharisees and the lawyers in the last couple of weeks.

  6. Pretty strong words for them that also have convicted us in many places.

  7. But as we turn the page to chapter 12 of Luke's gospel, Jesus speaks in the midst of very large crowds directly to his disciples.

  8. To those apparently following him.

  9. And in just the same few verses, Jesus will issue some of the most serious warnings that he ever gives to his disciples.

  10. Right alongside some of the most comforting words he ever speaks.

  11. This is God's holy word, which speaks to his followers truthfully, clearly, and unequivocally still today.

  12. Luke 12 at verse 1.

  13. In the meantime, when so many thousands of the people had gathered together that they were trampling one another,

  14. he began to say to his disciples first,

  15. Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.

  16. Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed or hidden that will not be known.

  17. Therefore, whatever you have said in the dark shall be heard in the light,

  18. and what you have whispered in private rooms shall be proclaimed on the housetops.

  19. I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body and after that have nothing more that they can do.

  20. But I will warn you whom to fear.

  21. Fear him who after he has killed has authority to cast into hell.

  22. Yes, I tell you, fear him.

  23. Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies?

  24. And not one of them is forgotten before God.

  25. Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered.

  26. Fear not.

  27. You are of more value than many sparrows.

  28. And I tell you, everyone who acknowledges me before men,

  29. the Son of Man also will acknowledge before the angels of God.

  30. But the one who denies me before men will be denied before the angels of God.

  31. And everyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven.

  32. But the one who blasphemes against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven.

  33. And when they bring you before the synagogues and the rulers and the authorities,

  34. do not be anxious about how you should defend yourself for what you should say.

  35. For the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.

  36. Pray with me.

  37. Father, this is your word.

  38. And your word is living and active.

  39. It's sharper than a double-edged sword.

  40. It pierces to divide soul and spirit, joints and marrow.

  41. It cuts to our hearts.

  42. So, Father, we ask that it would do that by your Spirit this morning.

  43. Even if it hurts, even if it challenges us,

  44. Father, might it show us our hearts and might it show us our Savior.

  45. Search us, O God.

  46. Know our hearts.

  47. Try us.

  48. Know our anxious thoughts.

  49. See if there's any wicked way in us so that you may point us back to the way everlasting.

  50. We need Him.

  51. We ask it in His name.

  52. Amen.

  53. If you are heading somewhere and you see one of these signs, it's not good.

  54. You know to be careful.

  55. There's danger ahead, right?

  56. Any number of things might happen.

  57. If you continue on the path that you're currently on, you might merely slip and fall.

  58. That wouldn't be too bad.

  59. You might run into a very unfriendly dog.

  60. Perhaps you've done that before.

  61. It's not good.

  62. Could be even worse.

  63. The bridge could be out.

  64. And there's no way to go forward.

  65. You can't stay on the same path.

  66. You could be facing even, one of the signs I hadn't personally seen before, danger of death.

  67. Yes, I'm not sure how, but stay away from that area.

  68. Don't keep going down that path, right?

  69. Jesus this morning is speaking to those of us who are on or considering the path of following Him.

  70. And He's saying, danger, warning, look out.

  71. And it's not just that you might get hurt, but Jesus is warning us of eternal dangers.

  72. He's raising the stakes beyond even these signs.

  73. And He's challenging us to consider seriously some eternal realities that are not merely matters of life and death,

  74. but are matters of eternal life and death.

  75. And let me remind you, these warnings are not for someone else.

  76. They're given to people like you and me.

  77. They're not for someone else.

  78. The audience of these warnings as Jesus speaks here to His disciples would be found in church on a morning like this.

  79. Would be hanging out, looking around, inquiring about Jesus.

  80. Jesus, we dare not treat these clear warnings lightly.

  81. They are tailor-made for us.

  82. People just like us.

  83. So first, Jesus says, warning.

  84. Religious pretense will be exposed.

  85. Look at verse 1.

  86. Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.

  87. Nothing is covered up that will not be revealed or hidden that will not be known.

  88. Therefore, whatever you've said in the dark shall be heard in the light.

  89. And what you've whispered in private rooms shall be proclaimed on the housetops.

  90. Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy.

  91. Hypocrisy.

  92. That thing that the world tells Christians that we're guilty of all the time, right?

  93. Perhaps so much so that you've kind of brushed it off.

  94. You don't really take that accusation seriously anymore.

  95. I'm not a hypocrite, right?

  96. But this time, it's from Jesus.

  97. Jesus says, beware of hypocrisy.

  98. He's been talking to the religious leaders about this danger of having your outward religiosity

  99. not match your inward reality.

  100. Doing lots of good religious things, but not having a genuine reality in your heart.

  101. You remember last week we saw in chapter 11 several examples of this as he talked to the Pharisees.

  102. Verse 39 of chapter 11, I think.

  103. Is that on the next slide?

  104. Verse 39.

  105. There it is.

  106. Now, you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside you're full of greed and wickedness.

  107. You fools, did not he who made the outside make the inside also?

  108. You see what Jesus has been challenging the leaders on, right?

  109. He does this repeatedly.

  110. The outside looks nice perhaps, but you're ignoring the inside.

  111. Inside.

  112. And now, Jesus says, that two-faced, double-life struggle that they have can seep into all the people around them.

  113. It's a danger for anyone following Jesus.

  114. That leaven, that yeast works its way through the whole loaf of bread.

  115. It starts with the leaders and spreads into all of the followers.

  116. Watch out, Jesus says.

  117. Be on your guard against hypocrisy.

  118. Why?

  119. Because one day everything will be known for what it truly is.

  120. You're not going to get away with it.

  121. You may fool your friends.

  122. You may fool your business partners.

  123. You may fool your spouse or your kids.

  124. But one day our ultimate commitments, what we truly value and truly live for, will be exposed for all to see.

  125. So hypocrisy is very short-sighted.

  126. It won't get you where you want to go ultimately.

  127. Be warned.

  128. Danger.

  129. Danger.

  130. How would you feel if everything you ever did or said was uncovered?

  131. Exposed?

  132. That makes you feel a little uncomfortable as it does me?

  133. Then you can see at least the seeds of hypocrisy sown in our hearts, right?

  134. Maybe we don't think of ourselves as hypocrites.

  135. I mean, we're not the Pharisees, right?

  136. What should we watch out for as signs that the bridge is out ahead, so to speak, in our lives?

  137. That we're not truly following Jesus?

  138. Here are some examples.

  139. Huntsville hypocrisy to consider in your own heart.

  140. Hypocrisy looks like saying God is sovereign and in control,

  141. but following your own feelings of what is best for your life,

  142. or trusting only your own plans for your life.

  143. Hypocrisy looks like being kind and patient in church and at small group,

  144. but being insufferable and hateful and quick-tempered at home.

  145. Hypocrisy looks like never missing time with God when others are watching,

  146. like right now.

  147. I'm here.

  148. But never making time for God in private.

  149. This leaven of hypocrisy, I don't know where it might show up in your life,

  150. but be honest with yourself.

  151. When that leaven starts to work its way in your heart, it's insidious, it's dangerous,

  152. it's devastating in our hearts.

  153. My girls like to play pretend, to make up stories where they get to play a variety of different roles.

  154. In particular, they like to play mommy and have someone else be the baby.

  155. And one time not too long ago, I was offering to play with one of my girls,

  156. and she wanted to make up a story.

  157. She wanted me to be the baby, and she would pretend to be the mommy, the one who is in charge.

  158. And this was delightful for a couple of minutes,

  159. until what began to happen is she started to kind of believe this story,

  160. that she was really in charge.

  161. And so what that meant was that I could only do what she told me to do.

  162. I couldn't quit playing the game and go do something else when I wanted to,

  163. because I was the baby and she was the mommy and she was in charge.

  164. Sit back down, Daddy.

  165. You see how quickly that happens for us?

  166. Sometimes if we pretend long enough,

  167. we begin to believe there's reality where there's not.

  168. Sometimes the yeast does in our heart what it does to a lump of dough.

  169. What happens to the bread if you've ever baked it?

  170. It begins to expand and to blow up so that it looks bigger,

  171. but inside it's actually not as substantial.

  172. There's nothing there.

  173. And so I play church and pretend to be religious for long enough that I begin to think,

  174. maybe I do know God.

  175. Yeah, maybe there is spiritual reality there.

  176. I think I've got everything I really need.

  177. I've kind of figured this church thing out.

  178. You just kind of go enough times and wear the right stuff

  179. and make sure you don't say the wrong thing.

  180. And yeah, there is reality there.

  181. And Jesus says,

  182. beware of the temptation to think.

  183. The outward religiosity creates inward reality.

  184. Watch out.

  185. Secondly, Jesus says,

  186. warning, warning,

  187. don't fear man more than God.

  188. Verse 4.

  189. Next slide has verse 4.

  190. There we go.

  191. I tell you, my friends, do not fear those who kill the body

  192. and after that have nothing more that they can do.

  193. But I will warn you whom to fear.

  194. Fear him who after he has killed

  195. has authority to cast into hell.

  196. Yes, I tell you, fear him.

  197. What are you afraid of?

  198. Does it scare you to think of being exposed?

  199. Your hypocrisy being revealed

  200. so others can know the truth about you?

  201. Do you fear failure?

  202. Criticism as a Christian?

  203. Are you afraid you will suffer physical harm

  204. for your beliefs?

  205. I've dealt with all of those recently

  206. as I consider traveling to India

  207. to preach the gospel in a country

  208. where many are less keen on that taking place

  209. than the place I usually am.

  210. And the fear of other people's negative opinions

  211. is a daily struggle for me.

  212. Perhaps the most consistently frustrating struggle

  213. throughout my life.

  214. But Jesus says don't fear those temporary things.

  215. Rather, there's an appropriate fear of God

  216. we should have.

  217. An awareness of His awesome greatness.

  218. And that before Him,

  219. we deserve not only physical harm,

  220. but eternal damnation

  221. when we see who He is.

  222. The Bible tells us

  223. one of the results of our sinfulness

  224. is that there is no fear of God

  225. before our eyes.

  226. We don't consider the weight of His glory.

  227. We don't bow before Him quickly.

  228. We don't follow His commandments naturally.

  229. And as a result,

  230. there's a danger for all of us

  231. that as we stop fearing God,

  232. we become driven by other things we fear more.

  233. Things like physical harm,

  234. loss of reputation,

  235. status with men,

  236. discomfort,

  237. whatever the things are that you fear.

  238. Jesus says don't let those lesser fears

  239. drive you.

  240. You must fear God.

  241. Have you taken a sober look

  242. at His perfect holiness,

  243. His righteous anger,

  244. His just wrath against sin,

  245. and realized you should rightly tremble before Him

  246. because of His awesome greatness?

  247. Have you glimpsed just a little bit

  248. of His infinite majesty

  249. and seen yourself as finite?

  250. Perfect.

  251. Small.

  252. Vulnerable.

  253. Before Him.

  254. See, most of us don't regularly face

  255. those who are intent to kill us

  256. as Jesus' disciples soon would.

  257. And yet, we too find fear of man

  258. overwhelming our fear of God,

  259. don't we?

  260. Can you imagine

  261. what the temptation would be like for you

  262. if it actually was your very life

  263. that was threatened because of your faith?

  264. You're already being driven by

  265. lesser concerns than that.

  266. What someone might think,

  267. what someone might say,

  268. how you feel about yourself,

  269. and those things are driving us.

  270. When you begin to see your life

  271. driven by fear,

  272. Jesus says,

  273. watch out.

  274. There's one whom you should fear

  275. and with Him consequences are eternal.

  276. Not merely years of pain and embarrassment,

  277. but an eternity of torment and death.

  278. Which consequence is more fearful?

  279. He says.

  280. Finally, Jesus says,

  281. warning.

  282. Warning.

  283. Again, watch out.

  284. Willfully rejecting Jesus

  285. will have eternal consequences.

  286. You see how these three warnings

  287. are connected

  288. as Jesus continues that theme

  289. of what happens eternally

  290. by painting here a picture

  291. of the judgment seat of God.

  292. That's the picture here in verse 8

  293. that Jesus is giving for us.

  294. I tell you,

  295. everyone who acknowledges Me

  296. before men,

  297. the Son of Man also will acknowledge

  298. before the angels of God.

  299. But the one who denies Me

  300. before men will be denied

  301. before the angels of God.

  302. That's the setting here.

  303. God's eternal judgment

  304. before the throne of God.

  305. Whether or not one has embraced Jesus

  306. is the key to what happens

  307. before that throne.

  308. That's what it all hinges on.

  309. And Jesus continues,

  310. verse 10,

  311. everyone who speaks a word

  312. against the Son of Man

  313. will be forgiven.

  314. But the one who blasphemes

  315. against the Holy Spirit

  316. will not be forgiven.

  317. Perhaps no more frightening warning

  318. in the world.

  319. You can't be forgiven.

  320. What's the unpardonable,

  321. the unforgivable sin?

  322. Those words get our attention,

  323. don't they?

  324. They got my attention

  325. when I was a kid.

  326. I remember reading them

  327. and going in tears to my dad,

  328. scared to death

  329. that I had committed

  330. the unforgivable sin,

  331. even though I had no idea

  332. what it would have been

  333. that I would have done.

  334. I just,

  335. I knew there couldn't be

  336. a worse place to find myself.

  337. Dad, what does this mean?

  338. Have I done it?

  339. I don't want to spend a lot of time

  340. on this verse,

  341. but two things to say

  342. about it briefly.

  343. And the first is,

  344. what is it?

  345. This blaspheming

  346. the Holy Spirit?

  347. In the context here,

  348. this unpardonable sin

  349. seems to be persistent,

  350. willful rejection

  351. of Jesus.

  352. The person, Jesus,

  353. that the Holy Spirit

  354. testifies to us

  355. is the Son of God

  356. and the Savior of sinners.

  357. It says we can say something

  358. against Jesus.

  359. We might have a negative word

  360. to say about Him

  361. and be forgiven for that,

  362. but not against

  363. the Holy Spirit

  364. when we willfully

  365. and repeatedly

  366. shut our hearts

  367. to the truth of Jesus

  368. from His Spirit.

  369. We're choosing

  370. to face death

  371. on our own.

  372. Secondly,

  373. have I done it?

  374. Perhaps it makes you feel

  375. as it made me feel

  376. when I was a child.

  377. I'll tell you

  378. what my dad told me.

  379. If you are worried

  380. about it,

  381. you haven't done it.

  382. Because of the nature

  383. of the sin

  384. described here

  385. and elsewhere

  386. in Scripture

  387. as this unforgivable sin,

  388. you can know

  389. that sincere conviction

  390. and concern

  391. not to be stuck

  392. in this sin

  393. is evidence

  394. that you are not

  395. stuck in this sin.

  396. If there's a sensitivity

  397. to God's Spirit

  398. in your heart

  399. bringing conviction

  400. of some sin

  401. upon you,

  402. then keep listening

  403. to Him

  404. and let Him

  405. point you

  406. to the forgiveness

  407. of Jesus.

  408. See, that's the whole point

  409. of this final warning

  410. in these verses

  411. is that eternity

  412. hinges on your

  413. active embrace

  414. of Jesus.

  415. You must be

  416. clinging to Him

  417. or you are standing

  418. on shaky ground.

  419. if you are merely

  420. pretending

  421. religiously

  422. but don't truly

  423. know Jesus.

  424. If you are more afraid

  425. of earthly consequences

  426. than eternal judgment.

  427. If you are denying

  428. Jesus

  429. before men,

  430. then beware

  431. when you stand

  432. before the judge

  433. of all the earth

  434. and your only hope

  435. is that Jesus speaks up

  436. to advocate

  437. for you.

  438. There is a judge.

  439. There is a heaven.

  440. There is a hell.

  441. And the determining

  442. factor for your

  443. eternal destiny

  444. is not what you've done

  445. or who you're

  446. associated with

  447. but whether you

  448. know Jesus.

  449. The judge will either

  450. say,

  451. welcome

  452. my child

  453. or depart

  454. from me.

  455. I never

  456. knew you.

  457. To those of you

  458. here this morning

  459. still wondering

  460. about Jesus

  461. still trying to figure

  462. out what you would

  463. make of Him.

  464. Let me encourage you

  465. fully to entrust

  466. yourself

  467. forever

  468. to Jesus.

  469. If He speaks

  470. on your behalf

  471. before His Father

  472. the judge

  473. that's all that matters.

  474. It's all you need.

  475. I remember

  476. my childhood

  477. best friend

  478. his father

  479. was the head

  480. of the P.E.

  481. department

  482. at Memphis

  483. State University

  484. is what it was

  485. called then.

  486. And so

  487. he and I

  488. could go

  489. and as little

  490. kids

  491. we could go

  492. into the

  493. practice gym

  494. where the Tigers

  495. practiced

  496. college basketball.

  497. It seemed

  498. incredible.

  499. I think it was

  500. just a normal

  501. court.

  502. But we could

  503. go in there

  504. after hours

  505. with all the

  506. lights off

  507. and we could

  508. flip a switch

  509. and go

  510. play basketball

  511. and man

  512. we felt like

  513. we were awesome.

  514. Except every

  515. once in a while

  516. his dad

  517. had gone

  518. to his office

  519. and somebody

  520. would walk

  521. down and stick

  522. his head in

  523. and look at me

  524. like I was

  525. doing something

  526. I shouldn't

  527. be doing.

  528. And I felt

  529. very guilty.

  530. I felt like

  531. I was being

  532. caught somewhere

  533. I wasn't

  534. supposed to be.

  535. And I'd look

  536. for my friend

  537. really fast.

  538. Hey Bill!

  539. Bill!

  540. And he would

  541. come up

  542. Hey!

  543. He's okay!

  544. He's with me!

  545. And they'd

  546. smile and wave

  547. and go off.

  548. And I kind of

  549. hung next to him

  550. and thought

  551. yeah that's right

  552. with him

  553. I can be right here.

  554. I can come

  555. right into this

  556. place where

  557. nobody else

  558. gets to come

  559. where all

  560. these awesome

  561. basketball players

  562. are because

  563. I'm with

  564. him.

  565. If God's

  566. son speaks

  567. on your

  568. behalf

  569. before his

  570. throne

  571. you're good.

  572. You're in.

  573. It's all

  574. that's required

  575. is for you

  576. to be connected

  577. to the son.

  578. In fact

  579. it's the only

  580. thing that

  581. matters.

  582. It's not

  583. what you've

  584. done.

  585. It's not

  586. how you've

  587. failed.

  588. It's not

  589. even how

  590. hypocritical

  591. you've been

  592. that determines

  593. your eternal

  594. destiny at that

  595. point.

  596. It's whether

  597. or not

  598. Jesus

  599. acknowledges

  600. you.

  601. His blood

  602. pays for

  603. your sins.

  604. His

  605. perfection

  606. replaces

  607. your failures

  608. and your

  609. eternity

  610. is secure.

  611. Nothing

  612. else is

  613. enough.

  614. Nothing

  615. else

  616. matters.

  617. Nothing

  618. else

  619. is

  620. needed.

  621. So if

  622. you haven't

  623. embraced

  624. him don't

  625. be content

  626. dabbling

  627. with religion.

  628. Don't be

  629. content

  630. playing around

  631. with church

  632. and showing

  633. up

  634. occasionally.

  635. Be all

  636. in on

  637. Jesus.

  638. Entrust

  639. yourself to

  640. Jesus

  641. forever

  642. as you

  643. do so.

  644. As we

  645. trust in

  646. Jesus

  647. the comfort

  648. offered to

  649. us is

  650. as profound

  651. as the

  652. warnings that

  653. we've been

  654. given this

  655. morning.

  656. It's a

  657. comfort from

  658. the Father,

  659. the Son,

  660. and the

  661. Holy Spirit.

  662. All of

  663. them together

  664. speaking comfort

  665. to us.

  666. First we

  667. see here

  668. your secure

  669. identity

  670. from the

  671. Son.

  672. If you're

  673. headed towards

  674. a dangerous

  675. dog,

  676. if you're

  677. headed towards

  678. a bridge

  679. that's out

  680. ahead,

  681. the danger

  682. of death,

  683. and someone

  684. gives you a

  685. sign to let

  686. you know

  687. that,

  688. that's a

  689. friendly thing

  690. to do.

  691. Right?

  692. Friends

  693. warn us of

  694. danger.

  695. Good friends

  696. say hard

  697. things to

  698. those they

  699. love,

  700. particularly

  701. warning them

  702. of danger

  703. in the path

  704. they're walking

  705. on.

  706. These may be

  707. stern warnings,

  708. but Jesus

  709. speaks them

  710. as a friend

  711. and even

  712. reaffirms

  713. that intention

  714. in this

  715. passage.

  716. The one

  717. place in

  718. all the

  719. Bible where

  720. He addresses

  721. His disciples

  722. directly as

  723. friends.

  724. Verse 4,

  725. I tell you

  726. my friends.

  727. My friends,

  728. Jesus says.

  729. There's a

  730. wealth of

  731. security in

  732. those words

  733. as Jesus

  734. warns those

  735. He loves.

  736. But listen,

  737. if you're

  738. with the

  739. Son,

  740. if by faith

  741. you're a

  742. friend of

  743. Jesus,

  744. the one who

  745. is by nature

  746. a friend of

  747. sinners,

  748. your identity

  749. is secure.

  750. You're safe

  751. in the gym.

  752. Your relationship

  753. with God

  754. is settled.

  755. There's also

  756. comfort from

  757. the Holy Spirit

  758. in this

  759. passage.

  760. At the end,

  761. verse 11,

  762. when they

  763. bring you

  764. before the

  765. synagogues

  766. and the

  767. rulers and

  768. the authorities,

  769. do not be

  770. anxious about

  771. how you

  772. should defend

  773. yourself or

  774. what you

  775. should say,

  776. for the

  777. Holy Spirit

  778. will teach

  779. you in

  780. that very

  781. hour what

  782. you ought

  783. to say.

  784. The Holy

  785. Spirit with

  786. you,

  787. constant help

  788. from the

  789. Spirit,

  790. ever present,

  791. dwelling in

  792. you.

  793. Because yes,

  794. this passage

  795. speaks primarily

  796. of eternal

  797. dangers,

  798. but it doesn't

  799. overlook the

  800. earthly dangers,

  801. the trying

  802. situations we

  803. will face

  804. beyond our

  805. wisdom or

  806. strength to

  807. handle.

  808. Jesus says

  809. be comforted

  810. because the

  811. Spirit will

  812. show us how

  813. we can testify

  814. to Jesus.

  815. He will give

  816. us the words

  817. to speak before

  818. men that will

  819. proclaim our

  820. hope in our

  821. Savior.

  822. What a great

  823. comfort that is

  824. for whatever

  825. the trial we

  826. will face,

  827. for whatever

  828. the situation

  829. we will find

  830. ourselves unsure

  831. of what

  832. faithfulness to

  833. Jesus will

  834. look like.

  835. He gives

  836. us His

  837. Spirit for

  838. constant,

  839. unfailing

  840. help.

  841. But I think

  842. easily my

  843. favorite word

  844. of comfort in

  845. this passage is

  846. the assurance of

  847. our unchanging

  848. value from the

  849. Father Himself.

  850. Look at verse

  851. six.

  852. Are not five

  853. sparrows sold

  854. for two pennies?

  855. And not one

  856. of them is

  857. forgotten before

  858. God?

  859. Why, even the

  860. hairs of your

  861. head are all

  862. numbered.

  863. Fear not,

  864. you are of

  865. more value

  866. than many

  867. sparrows.

  868. The very one

  869. who because of

  870. our natures we

  871. are told rightly

  872. to fear,

  873. because of our

  874. relationship we

  875. are told not

  876. to fear.

  877. Verse five,

  878. fear Him.

  879. Verse six and

  880. seven, fear

  881. not.

  882. The one who

  883. because of what

  884. we're like and

  885. what He's like

  886. should be the one

  887. we would fear

  888. above all others

  889. because He's our

  890. Father,

  891. do not fear.

  892. Have you ever

  893. considered putting

  894. a price tag on

  895. your children?

  896. Don't answer that

  897. if they're sitting

  898. next to you.

  899. How valuable

  900. are they to you?

  901. Your heavenly

  902. Father says you

  903. are precious

  904. to Him.

  905. He cares about

  906. sparrows,

  907. about things

  908. that others

  909. overlook and

  910. devalue and

  911. are worthless

  912. to them.

  913. He's interested

  914. in the minute,

  915. seemingly

  916. insignificant

  917. details of

  918. our lives.

  919. That's how much

  920. He cares.

  921. Some of you

  922. find it more

  923. amazing than

  924. others that He

  925. can count all

  926. the hairs on

  927. your head.

  928. I understand

  929. that.

  930. For many of us

  931. I'm told it's

  932. over a hundred

  933. thousand hairs.

  934. And He knows

  935. every single

  936. one.

  937. The Bible tells

  938. us He counts

  939. our hairs.

  940. It says He counts

  941. our tears.

  942. You may have

  943. cried a lot.

  944. It says He calls

  945. us by name

  946. that He knows

  947. every activity

  948. we're ever

  949. involved in.

  950. His eye is

  951. on the sparrow

  952. and so I know

  953. He watches

  954. me.

  955. It's a great

  956. reminder, a great

  957. comfort.

  958. let not your

  959. heart be troubled.

  960. His tender

  961. word I hear

  962. and resting

  963. on His goodness

  964. I lose my

  965. doubts and

  966. fears.

  967. Though by the

  968. path He leadeth

  969. but one step

  970. I may see

  971. His eye

  972. is on the

  973. sparrow

  974. and I know

  975. He watches

  976. me.

  977. His eye

  978. is on the

  979. sparrow.

  980. I can't

  981. sing that

  982. part.

  983. And I know

  984. He watches

  985. me.

  986. Even though I

  987. only see one

  988. step maybe

  989. I don't actually

  990. know whether

  991. the bridge is

  992. out, whether

  993. there's danger

  994. ahead.

  995. There's someone

  996. watching me

  997. who cares

  998. for me

  999. and it's the

  1000. comfort of

  1001. that beautiful

  1002. song.

  1003. It's the

  1004. one that

  1005. Jesus is

  1006. giving us

  1007. here speaking

  1008. about our

  1009. value to

  1010. His Father.

  1011. That's the

  1012. kind of

  1013. comfort offered

  1014. to every

  1015. one of you

  1016. this morning

  1017. in the

  1018. gospel of

  1019. Jesus Christ.

  1020. The warnings

  1021. in this passage

  1022. are clear that

  1023. if we continue

  1024. in our hypocrisy,

  1025. if we shape

  1026. our lives

  1027. around the

  1028. fear of man

  1029. and deny

  1030. before others

  1031. the authority

  1032. of Jesus,

  1033. we do so

  1034. at our own

  1035. peril.

  1036. We find

  1037. eternal

  1038. safety

  1039. nowhere else

  1040. but in

  1041. fully

  1042. entrusting

  1043. ourselves

  1044. to Jesus.

  1045. And the

  1046. comforts

  1047. tell us

  1048. that as we

  1049. trust our

  1050. God,

  1051. not just

  1052. once but

  1053. again today

  1054. as you

  1055. trust Him,

  1056. we're His

  1057. children.

  1058. We always

  1059. have His

  1060. presence

  1061. and His

  1062. help and

  1063. we are

  1064. treasured

  1065. and cared

  1066. for by Him

  1067. beyond

  1068. what we

  1069. could

  1070. understand.

  1071. And it

  1072. won't stop.

  1073. He treasures

  1074. us and

  1075. cares for us

  1076. forever.

  1077. When you

  1078. see the

  1079. bridge out

  1080. ahead,

  1081. if you see

  1082. that this

  1083. morning,

  1084. that the

  1085. path you're

  1086. on won't

  1087. get you

  1088. to God,

  1089. cling to

  1090. Jesus.

  1091. Find Him

  1092. to be the

  1093. bridge to

  1094. the Father,

  1095. the great

  1096. Savior we all

  1097. need.

  1098. let's pray.

  1099. Jesus,

  1100. thank You

  1101. for loving

  1102. us enough

  1103. to warn

  1104. us.

  1105. Thank You

  1106. for knowing

  1107. that when

  1108. we see those

  1109. warnings for

  1110. what they

  1111. really are,

  1112. we need

  1113. Your comfort

  1114. too.

  1115. And so

  1116. where we

  1117. need to

  1118. be shaken

  1119. into seeing

  1120. the reality

  1121. of our

  1122. hearts and

  1123. lives,

  1124. would You

  1125. do that

  1126. by Your

  1127. Spirit?

  1128. And call

  1129. us back

  1130. to the only

  1131. place of

  1132. comfort.

  1133. Call us

  1134. back to

  1135. clinging so

  1136. tightly to

  1137. You that

  1138. we couldn't

  1139. possibly stand

  1140. without You.

  1141. Might we

  1142. trust You

  1143. again today?

  1144. Might we

  1145. depend upon

  1146. You every

  1147. moment of

  1148. this week?

  1149. And might

  1150. we then

  1151. stand before

  1152. our God

  1153. confident

  1154. because of

  1155. our great

  1156. Savior.

  1157. We ask

  1158. it in

  1159. His name.

  1160. Amen.
