  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace. Join us.

  3. If you have Bibles with you, you can open them to Habakkuk.

  4. If you need directions on how to get there, you can turn to Zephaniah.

  5. And it's one more back.

  6. No, honestly, just turn to Matthew and make a left and go five books.

  7. And Habakkuk is a part of that group of minor prophets, which sadly, we don't read very often.

  8. But this is one of the jewels in that group.

  9. We're going to look at today, chapter 2, beginning at verse 2, and read down through verse 20.

  10. So if you would, follow with me as I read this portion of God's inspired word of truth.

  11. And the Lord answered me, write the vision, make it plain on tablets, so that he may run who reads it.

  12. For still the vision awaits its appointed time.

  13. It hastens to the end.

  14. It will not lie.

  15. If it seems slow, wait for it.

  16. It will surely come.

  17. It will not delay.

  18. Behold, his soul is puffed up.

  19. It is not upright within him, but the righteous shall live by his faith.

  20. Moreover, wine is a traitor, an arrogant man who is never at rest.

  21. His greed is as wide as Sheol, like death he has never enough.

  22. He gathers for himself all nations and collects as his own all peoples.

  23. Shall not all these take up their taunt against him with scoffing and riddles for him and say,

  24. Woe to him who heaps up what is not his own?

  25. For how long?

  26. And loads himself with pledges.

  27. Will not your debtors suddenly arise and those awake who will make you tremble?

  28. Then you will be spoiled for them.

  29. Because you have plundered many nations, all the remnant of the people shall plunder you.

  30. For the blood of man and violence to the earth, to cities and all who dwell in them.

  31. Woe to him who gets evil gain for his house, to set his nest on high, to be safe from the reach of harm.

  32. You have divided shame for your house by cutting off many peoples.

  33. You have forfeited your life.

  34. For the stone will cry out from the wall and the beam from the woodwork respond.

  35. Woe to him who builds a town with blood and founds a city on iniquity.

  36. Behold, is it not from the Lord of hosts that people's labor merely for fire and nations weary themselves for nothing?

  37. For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.

  38. Woe to him who makes his neighbors drink.

  39. You pour out your wrath and make them drunk in order to gaze at their nakedness.

  40. You will have your fill of shame instead of glory.

  41. Drink yourself and show your uncircumcision.

  42. The cup in the Lord's right hand will come around to you and utter shame will come upon your glory.

  43. The violence done to Lebanon will overwhelm you as will the destruction of the beasts that terrified them.

  44. For the blood of man and violence to the earth, to cities and all who dwell in them.

  45. What profit is an idol when its maker has shaped it?

  46. A metal image, a teacher of lies?

  47. For its maker trusts in his own creation when he makes speechless idols.

  48. Woe to him who says to a wooden thing,

  49. Awake!

  50. To a silent stone, arise!

  51. Can these teach?

  52. Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver,

  53. and there is no breath at all in it.

  54. But the Lord is in his holy temple.

  55. Let all the earth keep silence before him.

  56. Let's pray together as we enter into the study of this portion of God's word.

  57. Father, we thank you for your word and how you reveal yourself.

  58. We also thank you for how you reveal us to ourselves.

  59. Your word is powerful and effective and cuts to the quick, to the very core of who we are.

  60. As it reveals your glory and greatness, it shows the corruption that remains.

  61. And we, as we come to study, need to see both.

  62. We need to see ourselves.

  63. We need to see all that we are.

  64. But then we need to see you.

  65. We need to see you in all that you have done for us.

  66. So draw us deeper into the knowledge of ourselves and of you.

  67. Father, pour out your spirits.

  68. Use me and all the weakness of my words,

  69. so that when all is said and done,

  70. we will know that by your spirit we have heard from you.

  71. And we pray in Jesus' name.

  72. Amen.

  73. You know, this is the second of a three-week study through this prophecy.

  74. It's a little-known book by most of us in the Old Testament,

  75. but it is quite appropriate for us,

  76. especially if you are personally going through struggles and hard times,

  77. or, you know, those hard times could be on a personal level,

  78. but they can also be on a much broader social level.

  79. Regardless, Habakkuk is in a similar place,

  80. and he's going through some very difficult times,

  81. and he's wrestling with who God is in the midst of all of this.

  82. But he also leads us and teaches us of how we ourselves

  83. can better face these times.

  84. This week, as we looked last week,

  85. we saw the beginning of this conversation,

  86. that there's a dialogue going on here between Habakkuk,

  87. who offers his complaints before God,

  88. then God comes and answers him,

  89. but answers him in ways that are totally outside of anything

  90. Habakkuk could have expected,

  91. and caused Habakkuk some really great turmoil.

  92. And he goes back to God again and complains even more.

  93. But the last time we saw him,

  94. he enters into the ramparts,

  95. that high place on the wall of Jerusalem,

  96. where he is now waiting,

  97. waiting for God to respond to him.

  98. He wants, by faith,

  99. he has gone to God,

  100. and he is determined to hear from God.

  101. And so he's waiting.

  102. And this is the response.

  103. This is the response that God gives to him

  104. in light of all of his complaints

  105. in his previous prayers.

  106. And I think one of the things that tells us

  107. this whole book

  108. is that we need to beware

  109. when there are these very obvious villains

  110. in our lives.

  111. And those villains,

  112. and when we get into hard places,

  113. when we get into

  114. these great struggles in life,

  115. very, very often,

  116. and I think by far more times than not,

  117. there are villains involved.

  118. There is someone,

  119. either on a broad scale,

  120. like on a public stage,

  121. or somebody maybe in your family,

  122. there's someone

  123. that we turn to

  124. and we can see

  125. is a true villain

  126. and what they've done is wrong

  127. and maybe

  128. are really demonstrating

  129. some evil things.

  130. But there's a real danger

  131. for us to have people like that.

  132. And it's not because of the evil

  133. that they bring upon us,

  134. but it's the way they hide

  135. who we really are.

  136. Because when I have a villain,

  137. and that villain is evil,

  138. then my focus is there

  139. on the villain.

  140. That's the evil.

  141. That's the problem.

  142. I am the innocent victim.

  143. They are bad

  144. and what happens is

  145. I then fail

  146. to see

  147. the real nature

  148. of who I am.

  149. And in many ways,

  150. this is where Habakkuk is.

  151. He has gone to God

  152. and made his complaints

  153. and in verse 13,

  154. this is what he said.

  155. He says,

  156. why do you idly look

  157. at traitors

  158. and remains silent

  159. while the wicked

  160. swallows up the man

  161. more righteous than he?

  162. And so here's the villain.

  163. It's the Chaldeans

  164. and they are villains.

  165. No doubt about it.

  166. They are a brutal,

  167. violent group

  168. of people here.

  169. And Israel,

  170. I mean,

  171. obviously they're more righteous.

  172. They're God's people.

  173. evil.

  174. But now there's a problem.

  175. When we begin to see

  176. that they are the evil

  177. and we end up

  178. taking the eyes off

  179. of our own hearts,

  180. we are in danger.

  181. So how are we to live?

  182. How are we to live

  183. even in light of

  184. these villains?

  185. I mean,

  186. where's the difference

  187. between them and us

  188. if they are,

  189. in a sense,

  190. if we are,

  191. well,

  192. we could say this,

  193. you know,

  194. their evil

  195. may not be expressed

  196. so graphically,

  197. but at the same time,

  198. we all

  199. have Chaldean roots.

  200. And if that's the case,

  201. if we are all similar,

  202. if we all have

  203. these same roots,

  204. what's the difference?

  205. Where does the difference

  206. come in between us

  207. and them?

  208. Well,

  209. the difference

  210. is faith.

  211. We live by faith.

  212. Not our righteousness,

  213. not our goodness.

  214. We live with the knowledge

  215. of who we are.

  216. And we live by faith.

  217. Faith is the antidote

  218. to arrogance.

  219. To arrogance.

  220. And so,

  221. what does faith

  222. look like?

  223. Well,

  224. what we're going to do here

  225. is in these verses,

  226. as God responds

  227. from verse 5

  228. down through

  229. verse 19,

  230. we get a good picture

  231. of what arrogance is

  232. as we see this description

  233. of the Chaldeans.

  234. So,

  235. what God is doing here

  236. in his response

  237. to Habakkuk

  238. is he's pointing to

  239. this,

  240. yes,

  241. the Chaldeans

  242. are going to come,

  243. yes,

  244. they're going to carry out

  245. my work,

  246. but there will come

  247. an end to them as well.

  248. And this is what

  249. I'm going to do.

  250. But he describes

  251. a people

  252. that are

  253. puffed up

  254. as verse 4

  255. describes them.

  256. and it's some things

  257. that we can learn

  258. about our own hearts.

  259. The first thing,

  260. when we look at

  261. arrogance,

  262. an arrogant person

  263. is not just someone

  264. who boasts

  265. about their accomplishments

  266. or who's

  267. openly proud

  268. and loves

  269. to bring attention

  270. so much

  271. to themselves.

  272. An arrogant person

  273. may also be

  274. a wallflower,

  275. may live in hiding

  276. because they don't want

  277. attention to themselves,

  278. they don't necessarily

  279. want to be seen,

  280. but an arrogant person

  281. is somebody

  282. whose focus,

  283. whose whole world

  284. is on them.

  285. They are the center.

  286. They are

  287. why life

  288. exists.

  289. They are a god

  290. to themselves.

  291. The arrogant man,

  292. the arrogant woman

  293. is one who is

  294. self-sufficient.

  295. They're sufficient

  296. unto themselves,

  297. they have the resources,

  298. they do the work

  299. themselves,

  300. they are necessarily

  301. their own savior,

  302. they live for themselves.

  303. And so this is

  304. the picture

  305. of arrogance here

  306. that we see

  307. in these verses.

  308. But we have

  309. three things

  310. particularly

  311. that describes

  312. the arrogant heart.

  313. The first one

  314. is greed.

  315. We see that

  316. in verse 5

  317. where he says,

  318. moreover,

  319. wine is a traitor,

  320. an arrogant man

  321. who is never at rest.

  322. His greed is wide

  323. as sheol,

  324. like death.

  325. He has never enough.

  326. He gathers for himself

  327. all nations

  328. and collects

  329. as his own

  330. all peoples.

  331. There is a hunger

  332. in them

  333. that is insatiable,

  334. that they continue

  335. to collect

  336. more and more.

  337. It says,

  338. how much is enough?

  339. Well,

  340. always a little bit more.

  341. Now,

  342. one thing I want you to,

  343. I want to point out

  344. to you just textually here

  345. where he says,

  346. wine is a traitor.

  347. Well,

  348. some other manuscripts

  349. and I think

  350. are accurate

  351. actually say,

  352. wealth is a traitor.

  353. If you look at

  354. the Dead Sea Scroll

  355. manuscripts,

  356. that's what they say.

  357. And it fits

  358. the context here

  359. much better.

  360. Wealth is a traitor.

  361. A traitor.

  362. It promises things.

  363. It promises security,

  364. goodness,

  365. and all these things,

  366. but yet it will not

  367. fulfill those promises.

  368. Wealth is a traitor.

  369. And I think this is

  370. an interesting place

  371. for, you know,

  372. God to begin with here

  373. in describing

  374. the heart of the Chaldeans.

  375. You know,

  376. when a man determines

  377. to live life

  378. on his own terms

  379. and to supply life's needs

  380. through his own means

  381. and methods,

  382. that is the arrogant man.

  383. And what we see here

  384. is just then

  385. an unending quest,

  386. an insatiable hunger

  387. to have enough.

  388. And one of the reasons

  389. they build up

  390. this wealth

  391. is to give them

  392. this sense of security

  393. because in the next verses

  394. he talks about

  395. how they want to build

  396. their nest high

  397. to where it's basically

  398. unapproachable.

  399. they used to say

  400. back in the time

  401. of Babylon

  402. that the defenses

  403. of that city

  404. were so high

  405. and so strong

  406. it was impenetrable.

  407. That there was

  408. absolutely no risk

  409. of invasion

  410. by anyone

  411. because those defenses

  412. were so good.

  413. But that's what wealth does.

  414. wealth builds

  415. security.

  416. It builds status.

  417. It builds

  418. so many things

  419. but it helps us,

  420. it gives us

  421. the illusion

  422. that we can make

  423. ourselves safe

  424. from any threat,

  425. any danger,

  426. anything out there

  427. that may cause us

  428. harm.

  429. but it's a terrible

  430. illusion

  431. because even

  432. Babylon fell

  433. and there is no

  434. safe place

  435. that's that secure.

  436. You know,

  437. the second pursuit

  438. is not just greed

  439. but it's a pursuit

  440. of glory.

  441. We don't see

  442. that term glory

  443. used as that

  444. they're pursuing glory

  445. but there's another term

  446. that's repeated

  447. and that's the word

  448. shame.

  449. That they are going

  450. to,

  451. they heap shame

  452. on other people

  453. but that they

  454. are going to

  455. experience

  456. that same shame

  457. even to a much

  458. greater degree

  459. than they brought

  460. on others.

  461. So,

  462. what is that

  463. base,

  464. what is the meaning

  465. of that word glory?

  466. glory.

  467. What glory is

  468. is substance.

  469. At the root

  470. of the word

  471. in Hebrew

  472. the word is

  473. weighty,

  474. substantive.

  475. It's something

  476. as significance,

  477. as value.

  478. It's not some

  479. trivial thing

  480. but it's

  481. weighty,

  482. important.

  483. And so there's

  484. this hunger.

  485. The Chaldeans

  486. are attempting

  487. to build

  488. this sense

  489. of being

  490. important,

  491. being

  492. substantive

  493. through conquering

  494. and through

  495. invading

  496. all of these

  497. nations.

  498. And one of the

  499. things that

  500. you'll see here

  501. as he goes

  502. through and

  503. describes

  504. their pursuit

  505. of glory

  506. is how they

  507. use other

  508. people in

  509. that way.

  510. They bring

  511. other people

  512. to shame,

  513. utter shame

  514. so that

  515. they themselves

  516. will look

  517. more important,

  518. more glorious.

  519. One of the

  520. terms there

  521. they'll use

  522. particularly in

  523. verse 15

  524. where it talks

  525. about them

  526. getting other

  527. nations drunk

  528. so then they

  529. can look on

  530. their nakedness.

  531. Basically what

  532. that is describing

  533. is getting

  534. people drunk

  535. so they can

  536. sexually have

  537. their way

  538. with them

  539. and humiliate

  540. them in the

  541. process.

  542. that's what

  543. these arrogant

  544. Chaldeans

  545. are doing.

  546. The third

  547. thing

  548. that they're

  549. doing and

  550. this is really

  551. kind of the

  552. culmination

  553. is idolatry

  554. and we see

  555. that in verse

  556. 18 and 19

  557. it's a sad

  558. picture.

  559. I mean it's

  560. kind of funny

  561. too where

  562. somebody,

  563. a man,

  564. will create

  565. this object

  566. and then

  567. declare to

  568. it,

  569. this is come

  570. alive.

  571. Or they'll

  572. take this

  573. lifeless

  574. rock

  575. and say

  576. arise

  577. and maybe

  578. even decorate

  579. it up with

  580. gold and

  581. silver and

  582. then they bow

  583. down to it

  584. as if that

  585. thing which

  586. they've made

  587. in their

  588. hands

  589. is somehow

  590. going to

  591. save them.

  592. So in

  593. that

  594. idolatry

  595. one of the

  596. things of

  597. arrogance

  598. is foolishness

  599. but it's

  600. worship.

  601. where does

  602. the arrogant

  603. go to

  604. worship?

  605. He

  606. worships

  607. his own

  608. creation,

  609. his own

  610. doing,

  611. things of

  612. his own

  613. making,

  614. things that

  615. come from

  616. himself.

  617. That's what

  618. he worships.

  619. Now,

  620. this is a

  621. picture of

  622. the Chaldean

  623. villains.

  624. the problem

  625. comes,

  626. those

  627. descriptions

  628. really apply

  629. to more

  630. people than

  631. just the

  632. Chaldeans.

  633. And I

  634. have a hard

  635. time reading

  636. those.

  637. Let's take

  638. them one at

  639. a time.

  640. Greed,

  641. do I use

  642. wealth to

  643. build walls

  644. of protection

  645. for myself?

  646. Yeah,

  647. I do.

  648. You know,

  649. it used to

  650. be,

  651. and in

  652. some ways

  653. it still

  654. is,

  655. when it

  656. came to

  657. bill-paying

  658. day,

  659. Gail would

  660. pretty much

  661. figure that

  662. I was going

  663. to be in

  664. a bad

  665. mood.

  666. Because

  667. of all

  668. the money

  669. that went

  670. out,

  671. and the

  672. little bit

  673. of money

  674. that remained,

  675. happened,

  676. and I

  677. would think

  678. through all

  679. of the

  680. contingencies,

  681. all the

  682. things that

  683. might happen,

  684. all the

  685. things that

  686. I would

  687. need,

  688. and it's

  689. like it

  690. didn't add

  691. up.

  692. And now

  693. I'm living

  694. in anxiety

  695. and fear

  696. because my

  697. fortress is

  698. not high

  699. enough.

  700. So how

  701. much would

  702. I need

  703. for it to

  704. be enough?

  705. Well,

  706. a little bit

  707. more.

  708. What

  709. about glory?

  710. Am I

  711. hungry for glory?

  712. Hungry for glory?

  713. glory?

  714. I have been

  715. so convicted

  716. by this

  717. lately.

  718. In fact,

  719. just a couple

  720. minutes ago.

  721. I am

  722. willing,

  723. in order to

  724. be seen

  725. by you

  726. as clever,

  727. smart,

  728. and funny,

  729. I am

  730. willing to

  731. throw friends

  732. under the

  733. bus.

  734. in front

  735. of all

  736. of you,

  737. I referred

  738. to Derek

  739. as strange

  740. because I

  741. knew it

  742. would get

  743. a little

  744. bit of a

  745. laugh.

  746. And it

  747. may not

  748. sound like

  749. much to

  750. you,

  751. but what

  752. I did

  753. there was

  754. I was

  755. pursuing

  756. my own

  757. glory,

  758. and his

  759. did not

  760. matter one

  761. ounce to

  762. me.

  763. just like

  764. the Chaldeans,

  765. I am

  766. willing to

  767. use other

  768. people to

  769. give me a

  770. sense of

  771. status,

  772. of weightiness,

  773. of importance

  774. and significance.

  775. I've done

  776. it time

  777. and time

  778. again.

  779. I think

  780. the theme

  781. of my life

  782. over the

  783. years has

  784. been this

  785. hunger

  786. to be

  787. significant,

  788. to be

  789. weighty,

  790. to be

  791. important.

  792. And I'll

  793. use you

  794. to that

  795. end.

  796. And that's

  797. grief.

  798. Which

  799. brings me

  800. to

  801. idolatry.

  802. You know,

  803. it's just the

  804. culmination of

  805. all these

  806. other two

  807. things.

  808. You know,

  809. I don't

  810. have little

  811. statues

  812. around my

  813. house.

  814. You can

  815. come over

  816. and look.

  817. They're not

  818. there.

  819. You may

  820. find some

  821. Marshall stuff.

  822. That's about

  823. as close as

  824. you'll get.

  825. But what is

  826. it that will

  827. truly make me

  828. happy?

  829. How do you

  830. fill out

  831. this sentence?

  832. I will be

  833. a happy

  834. person if...

  835. And far

  836. too often,

  837. it's either

  838. what I

  839. accomplish,

  840. what I

  841. acquire,

  842. what I

  843. achieve?

  844. And how

  845. foolish is

  846. that?

  847. Something that

  848. I think I

  849. create in my

  850. own efforts,

  851. in my own

  852. strength,

  853. that I bow

  854. down to it

  855. and say,

  856. give me

  857. life.

  858. That's what

  859. the arrogant

  860. person does.

  861. It

  862. worships.

  863. It

  864. worships the

  865. work of

  866. our hands.

  867. It

  868. worships

  869. created

  870. things that

  871. have no

  872. life and we

  873. have no

  874. power to

  875. give them

  876. life.

  877. I

  878. am

  879. far too

  880. much like

  881. the Chaldeans.

  882. And if

  883. God's

  884. fierce

  885. judgment

  886. was

  887. deserved

  888. by that

  889. evil

  890. people,

  891. then I

  892. cannot

  893. remove

  894. myself

  895. from

  896. deserving

  897. that

  898. judgment.

  899. So

  900. what's

  901. the answer?

  902. It's

  903. faith.

  904. faith.

  905. It is

  906. faith.

  907. Faith is

  908. not just

  909. some

  910. mental

  911. acknowledgement

  912. of certain

  913. truths or

  914. doctrines or

  915. principles.

  916. Faith is

  917. what is the

  918. opposite of

  919. faith?

  920. The opposite

  921. of faith is

  922. self-sufficiency.

  923. So faith

  924. is dependence.

  925. Faith is

  926. just

  927. dependence

  928. on another,

  929. humble

  930. dependence.

  931. it is a

  932. sense of

  933. helplessness

  934. and a

  935. reaching out

  936. of hands

  937. to one

  938. who can

  939. supply

  940. need.

  941. Instead of

  942. being a

  943. life that

  944. depends on

  945. me and

  946. what I

  947. do,

  948. it's

  949. trusting

  950. somebody

  951. else.

  952. It's

  953. looking

  954. outside of

  955. my life

  956. to find

  957. life.

  958. Instead

  959. of life

  960. being that

  961. which centers

  962. around me,

  963. it's centered

  964. around

  965. someone else.

  966. it's centered

  967. around a

  968. covenant

  969. God in

  970. particular.

  971. In God's

  972. revelation to

  973. Habakkuk points

  974. there's two

  975. core aspects

  976. of faith

  977. that he brings

  978. out here

  979. that actually

  980. give us,

  981. that help us

  982. learn what

  983. faith is,

  984. but gives us

  985. hope.

  986. even as we

  987. face these

  988. really tough

  989. hard

  990. circumstances.

  991. In the

  992. first one,

  993. I'm going to

  994. take them in

  995. reverse order.

  996. So I'm going

  997. to start with

  998. verse 20.

  999. And there we

  1000. see God's

  1001. sovereign rule

  1002. where he says,

  1003. but the Lord is

  1004. in his holy

  1005. temple, let all

  1006. the earth keep

  1007. silence before

  1008. him.

  1009. keep

  1010. silent.

  1011. This is in

  1012. light of

  1013. complaining.

  1014. To keep

  1015. silent is

  1016. now coming

  1017. to that

  1018. place where

  1019. it says,

  1020. I have

  1021. nothing to

  1022. say.

  1023. This is not

  1024. me.

  1025. This is all

  1026. about you.

  1027. And what

  1028. faith is here

  1029. in the

  1030. sovereign God,

  1031. it's simply

  1032. the acknowledgement

  1033. that I

  1034. am not

  1035. God.

  1036. Of course,

  1037. you knew

  1038. that.

  1039. But why is

  1040. it so hard

  1041. for me to

  1042. figure that

  1043. out?

  1044. Faith,

  1045. you know,

  1046. I cannot

  1047. build enough

  1048. security to

  1049. bring me

  1050. peace.

  1051. I cannot

  1052. provide for

  1053. myself

  1054. adequately.

  1055. I cannot

  1056. protect

  1057. myself

  1058. from evils

  1059. in this

  1060. world.

  1061. I cannot

  1062. determine what

  1063. happens

  1064. tomorrow.

  1065. I cannot

  1066. undo what

  1067. happened

  1068. yesterday.

  1069. I am

  1070. not God.

  1071. I'm not

  1072. God for me.

  1073. I'm not

  1074. God for

  1075. anybody else.

  1076. God for

  1077. us.

  1078. And that

  1079. statement

  1080. alone takes

  1081. me out of

  1082. the center

  1083. of things.

  1084. It takes

  1085. me out

  1086. because if

  1087. I'm not

  1088. God,

  1089. then the

  1090. world does

  1091. not revolve

  1092. around me

  1093. and my

  1094. needs and

  1095. my wants

  1096. and my

  1097. agenda and

  1098. my plans.

  1099. I don't

  1100. determine.

  1101. Somebody

  1102. else does.

  1103. And that

  1104. in itself

  1105. in some

  1106. ways may

  1107. be comforting.

  1108. It may

  1109. not be.

  1110. Because if

  1111. there is a

  1112. king, if

  1113. there's somebody

  1114. else making

  1115. these

  1116. determinations,

  1117. what if

  1118. he's not

  1119. good?

  1120. Well, see, we

  1121. have hope

  1122. here because

  1123. if you see

  1124. in this

  1125. verse, it's

  1126. not just

  1127. anybody who's

  1128. in his holy

  1129. temple.

  1130. It's the

  1131. Lord.

  1132. It is the

  1133. covenant

  1134. God of

  1135. Israel.

  1136. It is the

  1137. God who

  1138. brought them

  1139. out of

  1140. slavery, out

  1141. of the land

  1142. of Egypt.

  1143. It is the

  1144. God who

  1145. carried them

  1146. through the

  1147. wilderness.

  1148. It is the

  1149. God who

  1150. planted them

  1151. in Canaan.

  1152. It is the

  1153. God who

  1154. declared that

  1155. he would be

  1156. their God,

  1157. they would

  1158. be his

  1159. people, and

  1160. he would

  1161. dwell right

  1162. in their

  1163. midst.

  1164. This

  1165. God

  1166. is the

  1167. sovereign ruler

  1168. of all

  1169. things.

  1170. And so

  1171. faith

  1172. begins

  1173. with this

  1174. humble

  1175. place

  1176. that, yes,

  1177. God rules,

  1178. but the

  1179. God who

  1180. rules

  1181. is good.

  1182. he is

  1183. for me,

  1184. his rule

  1185. is for

  1186. me.

  1187. He is

  1188. the God

  1189. of the

  1190. covenant,

  1191. a covenant

  1192. that was

  1193. fulfilled

  1194. and satisfied

  1195. through the

  1196. sacrifice

  1197. of the

  1198. Lamb of

  1199. God.

  1200. God

  1201. God.

  1202. And if

  1203. he would

  1204. do that

  1205. for me,

  1206. I think

  1207. I can

  1208. trust him.

  1209. The

  1210. second

  1211. thing

  1212. here

  1213. is God's

  1214. ultimate

  1215. glory.

  1216. Look at

  1217. verse 14.

  1218. For the

  1219. earth will

  1220. be filled

  1221. with the

  1222. knowledge

  1223. of the

  1224. glory of

  1225. the Lord

  1226. as the

  1227. waters

  1228. cover the

  1229. sea.

  1230. That

  1231. statement

  1232. says so

  1233. much.

  1234. And it

  1235. indeed

  1236. is,

  1237. it is a

  1238. huge

  1239. comfort

  1240. because

  1241. I'm made

  1242. for glory.

  1243. I was

  1244. created

  1245. for it.

  1246. I was

  1247. created by

  1248. the one

  1249. who is the

  1250. king of

  1251. glory.

  1252. I was

  1253. created in

  1254. his image.

  1255. And so

  1256. I'm made

  1257. for

  1258. significance.

  1259. I carry

  1260. the image

  1261. of my

  1262. maker.

  1263. I'm not

  1264. weighty

  1265. in myself.

  1266. I will

  1267. never be

  1268. in what I

  1269. do.

  1270. I will

  1271. never create

  1272. significance or

  1273. value than

  1274. any achievement

  1275. or any

  1276. purchase or

  1277. any position

  1278. that I

  1279. would hold.

  1280. I am

  1281. valued because

  1282. I belong to

  1283. one who

  1284. is glorious.

  1285. you know,

  1286. Habakkuk,

  1287. as he

  1288. wrote this,

  1289. he had no

  1290. idea what

  1291. was coming.

  1292. Maybe just

  1293. a glimpse,

  1294. but we can

  1295. look back.

  1296. We look back

  1297. to John

    John 1:14

  1298. chapter 1

  1299. verse 14

  1300. where he

  1301. wrote,

  1302. and the

  1303. word became

  1304. flesh and

  1305. dwelt among

  1306. us.

  1307. And we

  1308. have seen

  1309. his glory,

  1310. glory as

  1311. of the only

  1312. son of

  1313. the father,

  1314. full of

  1315. grace and

  1316. truth.

  1317. What

  1318. Habakkuk

  1319. probably could

  1320. not realize

  1321. fully is

  1322. when the

  1323. glory would

  1324. fill the

  1325. earth,

  1326. the glory

  1327. would not

  1328. just be

  1329. the light

  1330. of glory,

  1331. it would

  1332. be the

  1333. glorious one

  1334. himself,

  1335. that God

  1336. would come,

  1337. not in a

  1338. cloud,

  1339. not in

  1340. fire that

  1341. the nation

  1342. of Israel

  1343. had known

  1344. in the

  1345. past,

  1346. but he

  1347. would come

  1348. in a

  1349. man,

  1350. they would

  1351. see him

  1352. face to

  1353. face,

  1354. not just

  1355. his backside

  1356. like Moses

  1357. saw in the

  1358. wilderness,

  1359. but his

  1360. face,

  1361. that the

  1362. God of

  1363. glory would

  1364. come.

  1365. And

  1366. incredibly,

  1367. the way he

  1368. came was

  1369. just the

  1370. opposite of

  1371. the way that

  1372. we seek

  1373. glory.

  1374. We want

  1375. to build

  1376. it up and

  1377. cling to

  1378. position.

  1379. He laid

  1380. aside his

  1381. position.

  1382. He laid

  1383. aside his

  1384. right to

  1385. be at the

  1386. right hand of

  1387. the Father,

  1388. to be in

  1389. that glorious

  1390. place, and

  1391. he took the

  1392. form of a

  1393. servant.

  1394. He came

  1395. to the

  1396. arrogance

  1397. to serve

  1398. glory.

  1399. And die

  1400. and die

  1401. so that we

  1402. could once

  1403. again know

  1404. real glory.

  1405. And that's

  1406. not all.

  1407. We look at

  1408. John 17

    John 17:22

  1409. verses 22

  1410. and 23.

  1411. The glory

  1412. that you have

  1413. given me,

  1414. this is the

  1415. prayer of Jesus

  1416. right before he

  1417. was to die.

  1418. The glory you

  1419. have given me,

  1420. I have given

  1421. to them,

  1422. that they may

  1423. be one even

  1424. as we are

  1425. one.

  1426. I in them,

  1427. you in me,

  1428. that they may

  1429. become perfectly

  1430. one.

  1431. You see that?

  1432. You know what

  1433. glory is waiting

  1434. for us?

  1435. We are now

  1436. in Christ.

  1437. We have been

  1438. given his

  1439. glory.

  1440. The Father is

  1441. in him.

  1442. He is in us.

  1443. We are in

  1444. them.

  1445. And now this

  1446. fellowship,

  1447. unlike any

  1448. we could have

  1449. ever dreamed,

  1450. that we would

  1451. be one

  1452. with God

  1453. himself.

  1454. And then one

  1455. day we would

  1456. stand before

  1457. his face

  1458. and see

  1459. his glory

  1460. and realize

  1461. we will be

  1462. just like

  1463. him.

  1464. We are

  1465. promised

  1466. real glory.

  1467. We will be

  1468. like the

  1469. sun.

  1470. For all

  1471. that we were

  1472. made to know,

  1473. living by

  1474. faith,

  1475. rest in

  1476. those promises

  1477. so that we

  1478. don't have to

  1479. create these

  1480. things by

  1481. ourselves.

  1482. But living

  1483. by faith

  1484. means we

  1485. rest in the

  1486. one who

  1487. controls all

  1488. things and

  1489. the one who

  1490. is taking

  1491. us to

  1492. glory.

  1493. We rest.

  1494. trust.

  1495. We trust.

  1496. In your

  1497. struggles,

  1498. in your

  1499. trials,

  1500. beware the

  1501. villains.

  1502. Beware your

  1503. self-sufficient

  1504. efforts to

  1505. make things

  1506. right.

  1507. Beware your

  1508. self-righteousness

  1509. that's always in

  1510. your eyes you

  1511. look better than

  1512. they do.

  1513. Remember

  1514. that we have a

  1515. God that has

  1516. come already

  1517. as a servant.

  1518. Remember

  1519. that he has

  1520. now called us

  1521. to be that

  1522. servant.

  1523. He has paid

  1524. the ultimate

  1525. price and all

  1526. to bring us

  1527. into his

  1528. glory.

  1529. Wait.

  1530. Trust him.

  1531. and you

  1532. will be

  1533. satisfied.

  1534. Let's pray

  1535. together.

  1536. Father, we

  1537. have such a

  1538. hard time

  1539. conceiving of

  1540. these things.

  1541. We have such

  1542. a fainting

  1543. vision of what

  1544. glory it really

  1545. is.

  1546. But it's

  1547. coming.

  1548. It's coming.

  1549. Father, we

  1550. resist so

  1551. much letting

  1552. you control

  1553. things because

  1554. we're not sure

  1555. you're really

  1556. good.

  1557. But you

  1558. are.

  1559. Would you

  1560. empower us by

  1561. your spirit to

  1562. walk by faith?

  1563. Would you

  1564. empower us to

  1565. rest?

  1566. Would you

  1567. empower us to

  1568. trust you?

  1569. Father, bring

  1570. us to glory.

  1571. bring us near

  1572. that we may

  1573. know you.

  1574. And we pray

  1575. in Jesus' name.

  1576. Amen.
