  1. You are listening to a message from Southwood Presbyterian Church in Huntsville, Alabama.

  2. Our passion is to experience and express grace.

  3. Join us.

  4. Amen.

  5. I love that song.

  6. We had it sung to us in India.

  7. It's true there too.

  8. He's the God of that city and of that nation and great things because of who he is.

  9. Thank you once again for praying for us and for caring for my family while Skeets and I were in India for a couple of weeks.

  10. This particular Sunday, this particular sermon I had marked as a sermon on giving.

  11. It's the right time of year for that and seemed like an appropriate thing.

  12. And our passage is still going to address that a bit this morning.

  13. But God began writing a bit of a different sermon while I was in India.

  14. And especially while I was not sleeping on the plane on the way back.

  15. Because of all the things that my heart was full of from my time there.

  16. So I'm excited to share with you some things that God has been teaching me.

  17. Some burdens that he's given me for us.

  18. So let's pray.

  19. And in a few minutes I'll read Psalm 96 for us.

  20. Join me in prayer.

  21. Father those words are true.

  22. They're straight out of your word.

  23. There is no one like you.

  24. There is no other God besides you.

  25. Father show us what that must mean for us.

  26. Show us how that changes everything.

  27. You alone are worthy of our praise.

  28. Holy Spirit would you come and inflame our hearts this morning for you.

  29. Might we meet with God and be like all those who meet with him that don't leave unchanged.

  30. Holy Spirit speak through your word.

  31. We might know you and love you and serve you more.

  32. We ask in Jesus name.

  33. Amen.

  34. Amen.

  35. Baba Tu was one of the students in our seminary class while we were in India.

  36. He's 23 years old.

  37. He comes from a Hindu family.

  38. Five children.

  39. And just a couple of years ago he came to faith in Christ through his uncle.

  40. When he did, adding him to his uncle, that made for two Christians in the entire extended family.

  41. Dozens of family members in a very tight knit family.

  42. He became the second.

  43. And the rest of his family ran him off.

  44. They didn't want him around anymore.

  45. They sent him away out of the home.

  46. It was over a year before his parents or any of his siblings would speak with him.

  47. He can talk to them by phone now.

  48. They'll answer.

  49. But he's not welcome at home.

  50. Despite this, Baba Tu is the life of the party on the seminary campus.

  51. Everyone loves him.

  52. You'd think he'd want to stay right there where he has so much fun and everybody loves being with him.

  53. But Baba Tu can't wait to leave.

  54. He can't wait to finish his training so that he can get back home to his village.

  55. To tell people about Jesus.

  56. To evangelize his village.

  57. He wants to start a church there.

  58. Even though he knows that he may well suffer harm from his family.

  59. From others.

  60. That's his vision.

  61. That's his heart.

  62. That vision is what drives him every day.

  63. He likes cricket.

  64. He's really good at it.

  65. But if he's getting excited as you talk to him, it's probably because he's telling you the story of his conversion and coming to meet Jesus.

  66. Or he's telling you some glimpses of hope that he's had from conversations with family members or friends sharing with them about Jesus.

  67. That's what gets him excited.

  68. And I could tell you story after story, dozens of times over, of people we met in India just like that.

  69. And every time I tell him or think about him, it challenges me.

  70. It challenges me to consider what truly drives me.

  71. I mean, I'm a pastor, right?

  72. So being all about Jesus and the kingdom of God on the books, that's what I'm supposed to be about, right?

  73. By occupation, I'm all about the kingdom of God.

  74. But outside of my preaching and teaching, Babatoo has probably shared about Jesus with more people this year than I have in my 35.

  75. I'm pretty confident of that.

  76. I'm pretty passionate about a lot of things, about my reputation.

  77. Passionate about my family and going on vacation together and telling people about our times together.

  78. I can get passionate about Clemson football.

  79. But practically speaking, in my life, in my relationships, when you talk to me, when I'm excited about something,

  80. is it likely to be about the kingdom and Jesus?

  81. Is that what it's going to be?

  82. On a corporate level, Mission India, the group we were there with, has a vision.

  83. You can see it just barely on this tower right as you walk into their campus.

  84. You can't miss it.

  85. 100,000 Christ-like global leaders.

  86. These people, they want to raise up and send out to plant churches, to run orphanages.

  87. I'll have to practice that word.

  88. To teach children, to teach youth, to evangelize in every village in India.

  89. And everything they do is driven by that commitment.

  90. To reach India and beyond for Jesus, they will say.

  91. It's really crazy.

  92. In India alone, there are twice as many unbelievers as there are people in America, Canada, and Mexico combined.

  93. You'd think that'd be a big enough vision for them, right?

  94. Maybe we can just get into all of India.

  95. And yet, what do they want to do?

  96. They want to dream about reaching every village in India and then the whole world for the kingdom of Jesus.

  97. They talk about 1.3 billion people as a missionary force that the world has never seen before.

  98. That's how they think about India.

  99. But they don't just talk.

  100. They pray.

  101. They pray about that all the time.

  102. They wake up talking about it when they're exercising at 5 in the morning.

  103. They fundraise for it.

  104. They prioritize the worship of God and the word of God.

  105. Many of the people we were with for the week of the conference were spending their only two weeks of the year that they and their families would be on vacation.

  106. The only times they'd be outside of their village the whole year.

  107. Traveling two, three days each way for many of them.

  108. And then participating in a conference about worship and preaching.

  109. And they loved it.

  110. It was the only thing they wanted to do with that time.

  111. With their families sitting for four hours at a time in a crowded room with no AC to hear God's word and to praise his name.

  112. One of the pastors we met there was so excited to send me pictures of his new church building this week.

  113. He sent me 50 pictures of this building.

  114. 50 pictures of that.

  115. How many different things can you show?

  116. 50 pictures.

  117. He's excited because the church is being built.

  118. The kingdom of God is advancing.

  119. And he wanted to share the joy of that.

  120. Now on the books, our corporate vision is exactly the same.

  121. To advance the kingdom of God.

  122. Right?

  123. But is it truly our driving passion the way I'm describing it is for them?

  124. Is everything else in our lives scheduled and shaped around the worship of God?

  125. Do we hunger for God's word?

  126. How often do we sacrifice our own comfort to see the vision of God's kingdom advancing?

  127. Is that a regular thing for us?

  128. I really wrestled with this while we were there.

  129. It was challenging for me to think about us corporately.

  130. I told Skeets we had basically two options as I saw it.

  131. Being really honest, option one is that we shut these doors and send all our money over there to them.

  132. Where they really do need the money.

  133. Where they really are committed to seeing God's kingdom advance.

  134. And where a little bit of money goes a long way.

  135. And that seems like a viable option.

  136. Option two is that we truly begin to share that tangible passion for everyone in our villages.

  137. In the village of Huntsville and beyond.

  138. To know King Jesus.

  139. To see the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

  140. And to live like that.

  141. Now please hear me.

  142. I love y'all.

  143. My preference is option number two.

  144. I've told you I want to storm the gates of hell with y'all.

  145. I want to be about God doing great things in this city and around the world.

  146. I'm just saying that there's no longer for me this option three.

  147. Where we say all of those things.

  148. But really it doesn't make a lot of difference.

  149. That doesn't seem like a viable option anymore.

  150. Where intellectually we have a lot of right answers.

  151. But really advancing the kingdom is down the list of what truly drives us and shapes our lives.

  152. It doesn't seem viable for me.

  153. Or for us.

  154. And I've thought again as I've wrestled with that.

  155. I've thought it myself.

  156. I've heard other people say it.

  157. Well they're just zealous for Jesus because they don't have anything else.

  158. Maybe you've thought that.

  159. I've got to tell you.

  160. If that's all it takes to be zealous for Jesus like that.

  161. Then take away these walls and these padded seats and the AC.

  162. And all of these wonderful things that I call blessings.

  163. But if what it takes for me to treasure Jesus the way they do is just not to have some of that.

  164. That's a great place to start.

  165. Some of you are thinking that Pastor has a bit of heartburn.

  166. Maybe he had a bit too much of the spicy curry while he was in India.

  167. And this is just something he's got to get out of his system.

  168. I did have a lot of it.

  169. I really like it.

  170. But I wouldn't preach this to you if it was just what I felt.

  171. It's all over.

  172. Every page of this book.

  173. From beginning to end.

  174. It's what it says we're to be about.

  175. Psalm 96 reminds us this morning that God's glory here and everywhere must be the driving, formative, energizing passion of our lives and our church.

  176. There are three words.

  177. I think they mean basically the same thing.

  178. What I'm trying to say is it has to be the experiential reality.

  179. Not just something we write down in a book.

  180. It must actually shape our individual lives and our corporate lives together.

  181. Let's read the first few verses.

  182. Psalm 96.

  183. Oh sing to the Lord a new song.

  184. Sing to the Lord all the earth.

  185. Sing to the Lord.

  186. Bless his name.

  187. Tell of his salvation from day to day.

  188. Declare his glory among the nations.

  189. He says, marvelous works among all peoples.

  190. For great is the Lord and greatly to be praised.

  191. He is to be feared above all gods.

  192. For all the gods of the peoples are worthless idols.

  193. But the Lord made the heavens.

  194. Splendor and majesty are before him.

  195. Strength and beauty are in his sanctuary.

  196. Yahweh alone is glorious.

  197. There is none like him.

  198. All the other so-called gods are over one nation or one arena of life.

  199. But Yahweh owns it all.

  200. That's what he's saying.

  201. Splendor.

  202. Majesty.

  203. Strength.

  204. Beauty.

  205. They all belong to him.

  206. And the purpose of our lives then is to declare this unparalleled glory everywhere.

  207. First, upward.

  208. To God himself.

  209. Worshipping the one who is greatly to be praised.

  210. It must be central to everything we do.

  211. Because, y'all know how God has made us.

  212. We're always ascribing worth to something, aren't we?

  213. That's what it means to worship.

  214. We're always seeking for strength.

  215. For beauty.

  216. For value in something.

  217. And if it's not in the one true God,

  218. our lives are out of whack.

  219. We're chasing worthless idols.

  220. The psalmist says.

  221. Then we also declare God's glory,

  222. his great worth to each other.

  223. Inward.

  224. Among the family of God.

  225. Right here.

  226. This psalm is a song for the worship of God's people, right?

  227. So day after day, what are they doing as they sing this?

  228. We remind ourselves of his salvation day after day.

  229. We tell each other about it.

  230. Of the grace we have experienced from this glorious God.

  231. And we gather to do that.

  232. But it must never stop there.

  233. We worship God, yes.

  234. We remind each other of his greatness, yes.

  235. But we must declare God's glory outward.

  236. To every nation.

  237. Verse three.

  238. We're going to see in the rest of the psalm

  239. that what we're actually doing

  240. is we're inviting them in to this worship of God

  241. and fellowship with each other,

  242. saying among the nations,

  243. Yahweh reigns.

  244. Verse 10.

  245. I love the way Charles Spurgeon says it.

  246. Each day brings us deeper experience of our saving God.

  247. Each day shows us anew how deeply men need his salvation.

  248. Boy, isn't that the truth?

  249. Don't you realize that every day?

  250. How much people need salvation?

  251. Each day reveals the power of the gospel,

  252. that that's where our hope is.

  253. Each day the Spirit strives with the sons of men.

  254. And so what?

  255. Therefore, never pausing,

  256. be it ours to tell out the glorious message of free grace.

  257. Amen.

  258. Amen.

  259. That's good stuff.

  260. We do this or we shut the doors.

  261. Right?

  262. We do this with every breath that God gives us.

  263. It's why we're here.

  264. Y'all know this is not the focus of Psalm 96 only.

  265. Remember in Ephesians,

  266. when we walked together through that book

  267. during the last senior pastor transition?

  268. We learned what Southwood needed

  269. was not a new senior pastor.

  270. What we need,

  271. what this community needs,

  272. what the next generation needs,

  273. is an exalted vision of God.

  274. A grand view of his immeasurable love for us.

  275. How wide and how long

  276. and how high and how deep.

  277. And Ephesians says that's where the power comes from.

  278. That's where his power shows up

  279. when we see him as glorious as he is.

  280. God's glory everywhere,

  281. filling the nations,

  282. filling the earth,

  283. is the story of all of the Bible.

  284. Of all of history.

  285. God creates mankind in his image

  286. to reflect his glory

  287. and sends us out to fill the earth, right?

  288. Except that we don't.

  289. Not only do we fail to reflect his image,

  290. we actually decide we're not filling the earth.

  291. At the Tower of Babel,

  292. mankind decides to gather together into one place.

  293. The opposite of what God has created them

  294. and told them to do.

  295. And God is so committed

  296. that he confuses their language

  297. and it says scatters them over the whole earth

  298. because he will see it filled with his glory.

  299. And then he blesses Abraham

  300. and Abraham's descendants.

  301. Why?

  302. That they might be a blessing to the nations.

  303. The nation of Israel he establishes

  304. as a light for the nations.

  305. But because they too fail to shine his glory everywhere,

  306. he sends the Messiah,

  307. Isaiah chapter 49,

    Isaiah 49 chapter mention

  308. as a light for the nations

  309. that my salvation may reach

  310. to the end of the earth.

  311. You see what he's doing?

  312. He sends the Messiah

  313. that this vision of his glory being everywhere

  314. and every nation knowing

  315. might come to fruition.

  316. And that's what happens.

  317. He sends him and redeems us

  318. and sends us on the same mission.

  319. Why is it that we're here?

  320. What are we to be doing?

  321. 1 Peter chapter 2,

    1 Peter 2 chapter mention

  322. you're a chosen race,

  323. a royal priesthood,

  324. a holy nation,

  325. a people for God's own possession

  326. that you may proclaim

  327. the excellencies of him

  328. who called you out of darkness

  329. into his marvelous light

  330. that we might declare his glory

  331. among the nations.

  332. That's what we're here for.

  333. It's the whole story.

  334. It's what's going on cover to cover.

  335. It's why God has us here.

  336. And the best part is that

  337. we know how the story ends.

  338. It ends with what we read

  339. a couple weeks ago

  340. in Habakkuk chapter 2,

    Habakkuk 2 chapter mention

  341. that the earth will be filled

  342. with the knowledge

  343. of the glory of the Lord

  344. as the waters cover the seas.

  345. The earth full of God's glory.

  346. That's where it's going.

  347. And a multitude gathered

  348. around the throne of the Lamb

  349. that is from every tribe

  350. and tongue and people

  351. and nation,

  352. worshiping him.

  353. That's where it's going.

  354. It's headed there.

  355. God's going to do that.

  356. So if we want to be a part of that,

  357. if we want to be a part

  358. of something eternally glorious,

  359. greater than ourselves,

  360. that's what we have to be about.

  361. That's what he's doing.

  362. This is where we must focus

  363. our energies.

  364. The word of God

  365. must actually be our daily bread.

  366. Prayer must be our native language.

  367. The kingdom of God

  368. must become our primary homeland.

  369. The glory of God

  370. must be our chief delight.

  371. And that's got to change everything.

  372. We were created

  373. and we were redeemed

  374. to declare God's glory here

  375. and everywhere.

  376. Not just to make it a slogan.

  377. Not just to go to a church

  378. that says that's what we're doing.

  379. But to shape our lives

  380. around it

  381. in everything that we do.

  382. Now because this is

  383. our driving passion,

  384. of course we give to it.

  385. Here's the giving part.

  386. Look at verses 7 through 9.

  387. Ascribe to the Lord

  388. O families of the peoples.

  389. Ascribe to the Lord

  390. glory and strength.

  391. Ascribe to the Lord

  392. the glory due His name.

  393. Bring an offering

  394. and come into His courts.

  395. Worship the Lord

  396. in the splendor of holiness.

  397. Tremble before Him

  398. all the earth.

  399. God is so worthy of worship

  400. that as the peoples

  401. come to worship Him

  402. they bring offerings to Him.

  403. All sorts of offerings.

  404. The offerings in verse 8

  405. are interesting

  406. because they aren't the kinds

  407. for a specific sin

  408. or a particular celebration

  409. in the life of God's people.

  410. If you've read the Old Testament

  411. you know there are lots

  412. of offerings, right?

  413. A lot of reasons

  414. for sacrifices to be brought

  415. at particular times

  416. and to atone

  417. for particular sins.

  418. That's not what this word means.

  419. Rather these are

  420. our free will

  421. thank offerings.

  422. Offerings you bring

  423. to Yahweh

  424. merely because

  425. He's worthy

  426. and because you delight

  427. to honor Him.

  428. Offerings you bring

  429. to declare His glory

  430. and proclaim

  431. that He owns everything

  432. including you.

  433. So when we talk about giving

  434. people want to know numbers.

  435. You know,

  436. pastor is 10% enough?

  437. Is that the right thing?

  438. Gross or net?

  439. Help me know

  440. what am I supposed to do?

  441. Listen,

  442. the Old Testament

  443. talks about the 10% tithe

  444. and even these

  445. thank offerings

  446. to the glory of God

  447. in the Old Testament

  448. go well beyond that.

  449. But then the New Testament

  450. emphasis is not on numbers

  451. but it's on the God

  452. who says give it all.

  453. Leave 10% in the dust

  454. because what you're doing

  455. is you owe everything

  456. to me.

  457. I want your life

  458. given to my glory

  459. and my kingdom.

  460. It's interesting

  461. to watch people

  462. in India give.

  463. They don't have

  464. much money

  465. most of them

  466. but they have

  467. a lot of needs

  468. around

  469. and they love

  470. to give whatever

  471. they have

  472. when they see

  473. those needs.

  474. And when they run

  475. out of money

  476. they'll offer themselves

  477. to help

  478. in any way

  479. that they can.

  480. And I think

  481. they're open handed

  482. with their money

  483. and their time

  484. because they trust

  485. that God is worth it

  486. and that God

  487. will actually

  488. care for them.

  489. They have seen

  490. Him care for them

  491. when they have nothing.

  492. They're not afraid

  493. of that.

  494. This water tower

  495. right here

  496. stands in the

  497. middle of

  498. the campus

  499. there at Mission India

  500. as a testament

  501. to this.

  502. When they bought

  503. this 25 acre field

  504. way outside of town

  505. in the middle of nowhere

  506. 20 some years ago

  507. it was too far away

  508. from the city

  509. to have any water lines

  510. to it at all.

  511. So they purchased

  512. the field

  513. but really didn't know

  514. how they were going

  515. to get water

  516. on the property

  517. of their new campus.

  518. And so they prayed

  519. that God would provide

  520. in some way

  521. they didn't have

  522. in their plans

  523. and pretty soon

  524. they found a water source

  525. in the middle

  526. of the property.

  527. It became a large well

  528. that's now connected

  529. to this water tower

  530. that for 20 plus years

  531. has provided

  532. all the water

  533. for 200 plus residents

  534. on the campus

  535. for 20 years.

  536. And at times

  537. like the week

  538. we were there

  539. 2,000 people at a time

  540. and there's plenty

  541. of water left.

  542. Isn't it awesome

  543. to see God work like that?

  544. To provide like that

  545. exactly what His people need?

  546. Isn't that exciting?

  547. Isn't God someone

  548. we can trust

  549. to care for us?

  550. Yes, they know that.

  551. They've seen that.

  552. Y'all, we don't give

  553. because we have to.

  554. Because God told us

  555. there was something

  556. we had to do

  557. and meet a certain criteria.

  558. We give of our resources

  559. because we get

  560. to be a part

  561. of God's glory

  562. being declared

  563. to the nations.

  564. For many of us

  565. who've never given

  566. to the church before

  567. 10% is a good place

  568. to help guide us

  569. and figuring out

  570. how we start doing that.

  571. But think honestly

  572. if this is to be

  573. the formative

  574. energizing passion

  575. of your life

  576. the focus

  577. of what you're about

  578. then we must always

  579. be asking

  580. where can God

  581. free up

  582. more of our resources

  583. more of ourselves

  584. for His mission?

  585. That's something

  586. that we then love to do.

  587. I love the way

  588. John Stott describes

  589. how Jesus functioned.

  590. He says

  591. what dominated

  592. Jesus' mind

  593. was not the living

  594. but the giving

  595. of His life.

  596. Those are the kind

  597. of conversations

  598. you have.

  599. How can we

  600. reorganize

  601. reprioritize

  602. to give our money

  603. our time

  604. our home

  605. to the kingdom?

  606. Do you talk

  607. more about

  608. the living

  609. or the giving

  610. of your life?

  611. Try it.

  612. It's actually

  613. pretty fun

  614. to sacrifice

  615. for the sake

  616. of seeing

  617. the church

  618. of Jesus Christ

  619. His kingdom

  620. advance.

  621. It's really exciting.

  622. See Jesus

  623. gave up

  624. the privileges

  625. and the riches

  626. of heaven

  627. didn't He?

  628. And He came

  629. for the nations

  630. at the cost

  631. of His own life.

  632. It cost Him

  633. everything

  634. that the nations

  635. might know

  636. the glory

  637. of God.

  638. that the salvation

  639. of God

  640. might reach

  641. to the ends

  642. of the earth.

  643. That's what

  644. He was about.

  645. See He's the hero

  646. of this story

  647. isn't He?

  648. The story

  649. of God's glory

  650. that we told

  651. really quickly

  652. through the Bible

  653. just a few minutes ago.

  654. Jesus is the hero

  655. of that story.

  656. He's the one

  657. who comes

  658. as the perfect

  659. reflection

  660. of God's image.

  661. He's the one

  662. who comes

  663. and lives

  664. perfectly

  665. obediently

  666. and He dies

  667. and rises again

  668. so the nations

  669. can know

  670. the salvation

  671. of God.

  672. He comes

  673. so that the glory

  674. of God's salvation

  675. can explode

  676. to the nations

  677. in new ways

  678. like it never

  679. has before.

  680. That's how this works.

  681. Before Jesus

  682. very few

  683. outside of

  684. the nation

  685. of Israel

  686. and Jesus comes

  687. and it's to the uttermost

  688. parts of the earth

  689. because what?

  690. He not only

  691. gives His life

  692. He not only dies

  693. for the nations

  694. but He then commissions

  695. His followers

  696. to go

  697. and make disciples

  698. of all nations.

  699. He says

  700. be my witnesses

  701. to the uttermost

  702. parts of the earth

  703. so that all of them

  704. may know

  705. who I am

  706. what I've done

  707. for them

  708. and we get to tell people

  709. about this God?

  710. Are you kidding me?

  711. We get that kind

  712. of good news?

  713. We could have been asked

  714. to say something

  715. a lot more downer.

  716. This is great stuff

  717. and we get to introduce

  718. people

  719. to this God.

  720. See this is a God

  721. worth exalting

  722. and rejoicing

  723. in

  724. and we forget

  725. that so quickly.

  726. In the Hindu faith

  727. there are

  728. many gods.

  729. We heard

  730. while we were there

  731. the story

  732. of one village

  733. in India

  734. last India story

  735. I promise

  736. where there's

  737. a God

  738. who supposedly

  739. lives up

  740. on the top

  741. of a hill

  742. that's overlooking

  743. the village

  744. and for the Hindu

  745. people living

  746. in the village

  747. it's very rare

  748. that you would

  749. speak or interact

  750. with this God

  751. at all.

  752. In fact

  753. if you really need

  754. to

  755. here's what you

  756. have to do.

  757. Spend 40 days

  758. with no food

  759. and no familial

  760. interactions

  761. 40 days

  762. then wash

  763. yourself

  764. cleanse

  765. yourself

  766. dress in

  767. all black

  768. and make

  769. your way

  770. all the way

  771. up that hill

  772. to the very top

  773. and when you get

  774. there you can

  775. talk to him

  776. and see what

  777. happens

  778. see how he

  779. responds.

  780. Listen to what

  781. the one

  782. true

  783. all glorious

  784. God who lives

  785. above the heavens

  786. exalted far higher

  787. than anything like that

  788. how does he relate

  789. to people

  790. as gloriously

  791. different

  792. listen to this

  793. say among the nations

  794. the Lord reigns

  795. yes the world

  796. is established

  797. it shall never

  798. be moved

  799. he will judge

  800. the peoples

  801. with equity

  802. let the heavens

  803. be glad

  804. and let the earth

  805. rejoice

  806. let the sea roar

  807. and all that fills

  808. it

  809. let the field

  810. exult

  811. and everything

  812. in it

  813. then shall all

  814. the trees

  815. of the forest

  816. sing for joy

  817. before the Lord

  818. why?

  819. what's everybody

  820. so excited about?

  821. why are they all

  822. before Yahweh

  823. rejoicing

  824. and exulting

  825. for he comes

  826. he comes

  827. to judge

  828. the earth

  829. he'll judge

  830. the world

  831. in righteousness

  832. and the peoples

  833. in his

  834. faithfulness

  835. he comes

  836. he comes

  837. the psalmist

  838. repeats

  839. he comes

  840. to us

  841. and this is a huge

  842. part of the glory

  843. that is to be

  844. declared

  845. it's that he

  846. pursues relationship

  847. as our father

  848. that he's full

  849. of grace

  850. that he moves

  851. toward us

  852. the good news

  853. we declare

  854. to the nations

  855. is a God

  856. you can know

  857. a God

  858. you can have

  859. relationship with

  860. a God

  861. who will

  862. in fact

  863. make everything

  864. right

  865. one day

  866. see some of you

  867. are good enough

  868. Bible students

  869. to say

  870. pastor

  871. you're not really

  872. being honest

  873. it says he comes

  874. to judge

  875. it's not nearly

  876. so exciting

  877. as you think

  878. in fact it says it

  879. three times

  880. he comes

  881. to judge

  882. look at what

  883. happens

  884. when he does

  885. what's the context

  886. of this judgment

  887. it's not the fearful

  888. judgment

  889. of God

  890. being highlighted

  891. here

  892. it's a judgment

  893. that brings

  894. rejoicing

  895. everywhere

  896. everything's

  897. rejoicing

  898. when this God

  899. shows up

  900. as the judge

  901. because he's

  902. making everything

  903. right

  904. everyone and

  905. everything in

  906. creation

  907. rejoicing

  908. he's coming

  909. to make all

  910. things new

  911. for the blessing

  912. of his creation

  913. for the good

  914. of his people

  915. for the glory

  916. of his name

  917. he comes

  918. friends

  919. we have the

  920. good news

  921. of the one

  922. true God

  923. who reigns

  924. over the nations

  925. and who comes

  926. for the nations

  927. to them

  928. and so many

  929. know nothing

  930. of a God

  931. they can have

  932. a relationship

  933. with

  934. many in India

  935. know only

  936. of a God

  937. they can try

  938. to manipulate

  939. or work

  940. to impress

  941. and maybe

  942. possibly walk

  943. their way up

  944. to receive

  945. a blessing

  946. from him

  947. and many in

  948. Huntsville

  949. know only

  950. of a God

  951. who's a fiction

  952. for weak

  953. people

  954. or a God

  955. who I have

  956. to perform

  957. for to placate

  958. and keep at a

  959. distance so he

  960. doesn't get in the

  961. way of my life

  962. no wonder

  963. they don't love

  964. that God

  965. they don't know

  966. the one

  967. that you

  968. and I

  969. know

  970. who's their

  971. father

  972. who comes

  973. to them

  974. who loves

  975. them

  976. they don't know

  977. what that would

  978. be like

  979. that's a God

  980. worthy of rejoicing

  981. of exaltation

  982. of celebration

  983. and our job

  984. is to invite

  985. everyone to that

  986. party

  987. right

  988. now you may

  989. be thinking

  990. this is that

  991. one crazy

  992. sermon

  993. that you have

  994. to put up

  995. with when you

  996. send your

  997. pastor to

  998. India

  999. for two

  1000. weeks

  1001. I tell you

  1002. two reasons

  1003. why I

  1004. hope and

  1005. believe that's

  1006. not true

  1007. the first one

  1008. is that this

  1009. is a burden

  1010. that's not

  1011. new to us

  1012. but the burden

  1013. to live it

  1014. is one that I

  1015. pray doesn't

  1016. leave me

  1017. and you can

  1018. pray for that

  1019. too

  1020. but the second

  1021. reason is more

  1022. important than

  1023. that and way

  1024. more important

  1025. than whether or

  1026. not I'm here

  1027. or have a burden

  1028. like that

  1029. and that's that

  1030. Jesus regularly

  1031. calls us to

  1032. remember this

  1033. he regularly

  1034. wants us to

  1035. remember how

  1036. valuable the

  1037. nations are to

  1038. him

  1039. he wants us to

  1040. remember our

  1041. God's heart

  1042. for the nations

  1043. that he would

  1044. come at the

  1045. cost of his

  1046. own life

  1047. and lay it

  1048. down for them

  1049. that they might

  1050. know the glory

  1051. the salvation

  1052. the love

  1053. of our God

  1054. it's here at

  1055. this table

  1056. that we celebrate

  1057. the God who

  1058. comes to us

  1059. to heal our

  1060. hearts that were

  1061. wayward from him

  1062. that were broken

  1063. seemingly beyond

  1064. repair

  1065. and he comes

  1066. to heal

  1067. those hearts

  1068. it's here at

  1069. this table

  1070. that we celebrate

  1071. a God who

  1072. comes to us

  1073. to eradicate

  1074. the evil

  1075. and injustice

  1076. in this world

  1077. and make things

  1078. right

  1079. once

  1080. and for all

  1081. and we celebrate

  1082. that that is

  1083. the God

  1084. who eats

  1085. and drinks

  1086. with us

  1087. remember what

  1088. Paul said

  1089. about this

  1090. sacrament

  1091. he said

  1092. I received

  1093. from the Lord

  1094. what I also

  1095. delivered to you

  1096. that the Lord

  1097. Jesus on the night

  1098. he was betrayed

  1099. took bread

  1100. and when he had

  1101. given thanks

  1102. he broke it

  1103. and said

  1104. this is my body

  1105. which is for you

  1106. do this

  1107. in remembrance

  1108. of me

  1109. in the same way

  1110. also he took

  1111. the cup

  1112. after supper

  1113. saying

  1114. this cup

  1115. is the new

  1116. covenant

  1117. in my blood

  1118. do this

  1119. as often

  1120. as you drink

  1121. it

  1122. in remembrance

  1123. of me

  1124. for as often

  1125. as you eat

  1126. this bread

  1127. and drink

  1128. the cup

  1129. you proclaim

  1130. the Lord's

  1131. death

  1132. until he

  1133. comes

  1134. every time

  1135. you do

  1136. this

  1137. you declare

  1138. that God

  1139. came

  1140. for the nations

  1141. and is coming

  1142. again

  1143. to bring them

  1144. to his

  1145. throne

  1146. forever

  1147. we declare

  1148. that

  1149. and rejoice

  1150. in that

  1151. this morning

  1152. let's pray

  1153. and we'll

  1154. celebrate

  1155. together

  1156. father we

  1157. give you

  1158. thanks

  1159. and praise

  1160. for your

  1161. great

  1162. and greatly

  1163. to be

  1164. praised

  1165. and there's

  1166. none other

  1167. we chase

  1168. a lot

  1169. of lesser

  1170. things

  1171. in our

  1172. lives

  1173. but the

  1174. way you

  1175. love us

  1176. knows

  1177. no

  1178. comparison

  1179. and we

  1180. rejoice

  1181. in that

  1182. and we

  1183. ask now

  1184. that you

  1185. would set

  1186. these common

  1187. elements

  1188. aside

  1189. for a

  1190. sacred

  1191. purpose

  1192. in our

  1193. hearts

  1194. that the

  1195. death

  1196. of Jesus

  1197. for us

  1198. might

  1199. overwhelm

  1200. us

  1201. and overflow

  1202. from us

  1203. to others

  1204. we ask it

  1205. in his

  1206. name

  1207. amen
